(Anyone up for a quest?)
-----

You are a weird lizard thing.

Scratch that, you are an awesome weird lizard thing. You’re not that big, but you have really sharp, retractable claws, and your colour-changing scales make regular lizards jealous.

You also have a really fearsome roar. You wouldn’t be an awesome weird lizard thing without one.

You’re hungry right now though, which is why you’re currently lurking at the outskirts of a human settlement. These guys picked a lot of the fruits in the surrounding forest area, so you’re looking to steal some because fruits are fuckin’ great.

>Reveal world domination plans
>>
Wooden walls stretch out to your right. Watching from atop a small boulder, to your left you spy a group of (you count) eight human children outside the town walls, throwing around a ball of maybe-leather and playing around on the green summer grass.

You probably don’t want to deal with so many at once.

Watching the group of children are a pair of adults, sitting on a large smoothed out tree trunk with a large woven basket on the ground next to it, close to one of the village’s gates.

Further away from the town walls, but not too far from the main group, you spot a lone child sitting down cross-legged, seemingly prodding at something with a short stick.

Now, who do you want to terrorise today.

Not too sure how you feel about picking on kids, but even young humans are three times taller than your charming lizardy frame, which sounds like a decent excuse to you.

A lazy start to the day then, you decide while approaching the lone child. You notice as you get close that it’s using that stick to trace a circle of runes in the dirt.

Whatever. They aren’t inscribed, your mark isn’t even adolescent, and it’s far enough from the main group that you’re not likely to make a scene - with that in mind, you show yourself and deliver your intimidating roar.

(cont.)
>>
>>43694593

Nailed it. The kid’s literally stunned with fear, so you make your way towards the small bag placed next to her (it’s female, right? How do you even tell with human children?) and-

The child doubles over and a light, energetic sound breaks out.

Okay that feels nice you can get used to this.

You give yourself about half an eternity before you remember your purpose, reluctantly breaking away to stick your head into the cloth bag next to the child.

It laughs that melodic laugh again. “Hilrsirr’ta rui? Idair uceirr, irrui’os dhed’ir sel heya.”

Yeah you don’t speak human, sorry kid. You pay it no heed, withdrawing from the bag with your prize (hell yeah a fuckin’ orange). You take a moment to settle yourself on the ground, and begin devouring your loot with gusto.

You’d call this a successful morning.

Eh, it’s fine. You were interested in what goes on inside the settlement anyway. Your experience with human, minus an exception, is all watching from afar, so this is pretty new. Onwards, my noble steed!

You do change your scales to match the grey cloth you’re held against, though (which causes your steed to start and examine you for a while). Inconspicuity is in your blood, and you’re damn good at it.

Continuing on and humming, your new servant carries you past the walls, and you crane your neck upward and side to side to look at some of the wooden houses. Their size strikes you as strange - you know that kobolds, for instance, make huts that are pretty much only big enough to sleep in, and you’re pretty sure these houses aren’t just really big sleeping rooms. Wonder what they do in these things?

You’re taken past a- you think it’s called a marketplace? No, no, too small, but it kinda matches the description, being all open and having humans yelling at each other and pointing at delicious food and shiny things- and stops in front of a house made mostly of grey stone bricks. Guess whoever lives here has status of sorts.

Your subject hits the door a few times (what) and an old male’s voice responds. After a while, the door opens to reveal a tall, grey-haired human.

> [X] [Roar]

This one has a fancier house! And is adult! Well, maybe “past its prime” is more accurate, but you’re pretty sure this situation calls for maximum intimidation, so you crank up the fearsome to 11, build up a growl, and let it crescendo into your best roar.

The man’s eyebrow rises up further, but otherwise doesn’t react. Your servant, however, makes that light sound again.

“Aid'ir enusefra air! Ai'os aid'ir uidraina llailn'ta!”

... Your roar isn’t quite having the effect you’re expecting today. And doesn’t ‘enusefra’ translate to ‘adorable’?

Nah, you’re probably mistaken.
>>
>>43696708

The man nods, and the two of them start to talk. Considering that you can only understand a few words, you tune out of their conversation, and let your thoughts wander.

You haven’t bothered to approach human settlements before, so the whim that brought you here lead to a rather new experience. You’ve met and lived with a human in the past, leaving memories that you’d rather not think about, but you can’t say things have been bad so far.

Which is when your day takes on a rather unwanted change.
>>
>>43696756

A long, low, rumbling sound echoes through the midsummer sky.

You’ve heard something similar before - it sounds very, very much like a goblin’s hunting horn. Except, even accounting for unreliable memory, you’re pretty sure a hunting horn isn’t quite as loud and deep, and isn’t normally answered by two more.

You look around, noticing signs of confusion among the humans walking around the village, and your servant’s conversation starts to take a frantic tone. You notice someone in some kind of simple metal armor running towards your group, shouting all the way.

The human guard (or whoever else wears armor in these places) reaches your group and makes a very frantic exchange with the older, grey-haired man, too quickly for you to catch anything with your limited understanding of their language.

You could probably leap to a rooftop and look around for yourself, but you’re in a human settlement, and you’re fairly certain they have things in place to deal with unexpected events. Plus, you feel strangely safe here.

Safe?

You shake the memories away, and take a look around. You watch as confusion and unease among the humans quickly turns into panic, and it doesn’t take you long to see why.

Along a dirt road in line with the west gate, you see a goblin - a short, scrawny humanoid with mottled dark green skin, wielding a rusty looking blade in one hand and yelling things too obscene to be repeated. Normally not the most threatening of Wild, someone had the great idea of sticking it on top of a vicious-looking wolf and calling it cavalry.

A raid? Who the hell conducts a raid in the middle of the day?

You notice the human guard heft a spear. You hear shouting both human and Wild as the goblin hurtles down towards your position. You see thirst and battlelust, shared between rider and wolf in bloodshot eyes.

And then there’s a violet-orange flash, and the rider is engulfed in a bolt of flame.
>>
>>43697883

“Eweirr, sera! Aerd sil, nedsules'ir naad!”

The old man shouts to your servant, a book open in one hand, wisps of mana rising up as his inscribed circle dissipates with his spell. His other hand is held outwards, practically sizzling with the arcane power that consumed the wolfrider.

Of course, goblins never attack alone.

Your servant visibly panics and you look up to see almost a dozen riders charging down the road. The human guards, mostly wielding spear, sword, and mechanical bow, do everything they can to stop the onslaught, but they are very clearly losing.

“Sera! Eweirr!”

Your servant runs.

The sounds of battle, a cacophony of screams, bestial shouts, and metal clanks and clangs reverberates in your skull. The sounds are mostly coming from the north and west, not immediately upon you but far too close for comfort.

Your servant sprints east along the dirt path, still carrying you in her arms. You do what you can to focus with your bouncing field of view, noticing the crowds of people thinning as they rush into their houses and slam their doors closed. Normally, you’d be on board with staying low until danger passes, but somehow you don’t think the guards of this place will be very successful driving back this way-larger-than-average raid.

Where is your servant’s house, anyway?

The two of you reach the east gate in minutes, the girl panting harshly. You hear a horse whinny and a wagon to your right takes off along a south-eastern road. To the north-east, you spot a group of children and a handful of adults heading into the forest, a good two hundred meters or so from your position.

“Nedsul merila!”

You call that shouting? Louder, or they’ll never hear you!

You wriggle yourself out of the girl’s arms, prompting a short gasp of surprise. Running forward and looking back to ascertain that your servant is following, you start making your way towards where the humans entered the forest, shouts and clangs of combat growing fainter as the two of you move across the field.

The forest quickly grows dense, and you hop up into the trees to look for the group, constantly glancing back to check on your servant. It doesn’t take very long, because they’re not alone.

You hear screams first. Darting between branches towards the noise, you swiftly spot at least a dozen children behind an older woman, faces streaked with tears and in various expressions of confusion, shock, and fear. Ahead of them are the pair of guards you saw, both wielding a short sword and small wooden shield, locked in combat with a goblin wolf-rider. Further back, you see another two of the short green monsters drawing arrows across wooden bows.

Holy shit, they’re here too?

You hesitate.

You woke up this morning and came here to look for fruit. You didn’t sign up for a mid-day raid, or life-or-death combat, or any damn excitement at all. You got what you came for a while ago, and yet you’re still here, facing all sorts of crap you don’t want to deal with. There are a whole lot of reasons for why you should leave, but you give the other train of thought a chance.

You think about why you should throw yourself into this, and surprisingly quickly you come up with your new servant, standing frozen behind and below you in fear.

"Safety."
Responsibility.

An awesome lizard thing wouldn’t turn away here.

You run towards the fight, hopping from branch to branch, instinctively camouflaging your scales with the dull brown of tree bark. You needn’t have bothered, as neither goblin nor human had any reason tear themselves from their respective adversaries to look up into the thick forest canopy.

You see one of the guards take an arrow to the thigh, but your doubt is gone. You move yourself close to the fight quickly, position above the wolfrider, unsheathe your claws, and jump.
>>
>>43699966

Gravity takes over and you plummet like a (small, lizard-shaped) fist from the heavens right onto the neck of the massive grey canine, slicing right through flesh, piercing its throat, and it howls, the sound warped by blood and wound.

You pull back your right claw, completely tuned out to the shouts of the men and the confusion of the goblin seated right behind you and plunge it back into the flesh and blood-soaked fur in front of your eyes, willing the thing to just die, die!

You don’t get your third strike before you’re flung off, vision wheeling as you slam into the ground. You pick yourself up, and the first thing that enters your blurred vision is an arrowhead a few meters away, pointed right in your direction.
>>
“Fraera- fraera wusc!”

A frantic, high pitched voice sounds out behind you as a torrent of water blasts across the battlefield, slamming into the bow(goblin)man. As if on queue, a guardsman rushes forward into the remaining goblin, slamming it into a tree and perforating it with his shortsword enough to kill it twice over.

... You won, you think.
And after a moment listening to the cries and shouting around you, your servant enters your vision with worry stricken across her face, and you realise you’re tired as hell.

More bestial definitely fits better. I just found the mental image funny.

just make the story inline with what you feel capable of drawing. Not too many characters, etc.

If you don't want to continue, then perhaps you could just write an epilogue that shows us the fates of the characters.
If you were to continue, then you could pick it up from where it left off.

And you shouldn't worry about the art too much. It doesn't matter how rudimentary the art is as long as the writing is good.

Basically this. Just do what you're comfortable with. But whatever you decide to do, just know that this iteration was a success.

Awesome lizard adventures.
And what >>43700959 says, just prep character portraits and some situations that you are 100% sure will come up.

This is pretty solid, just more of this, and a twitter I guess. Has this been archived yet?

Right then, I'll give it a shot and just see where it goes.

I'll try to continue this on probably Monday, which will be Sunday night for most of you, I believe. It'll be announced on twitter (@boxofmithril) when I start or if anything changes.

I'll try archiving this thread, and hope nothing blows up.

Thanks for participating!

Makes sense. The scenes I prepared were mostly the ones early choices would lead to, and a few endings. Some unused ones include the [All in] ending ([From above] being much more popular was completely unexpected!), and a scene for the other set of companions if you didn't get this kid.

I think part of me thought to draw from scratch for updates, but that's way too optimistic.

Anybody archived this?
