Both Lan and Dex try to get themselves out of the hole they dug themselves into, most of the class laughs at these turn of events, while you stay there standing a bit confused at what just happened.

Mayl’s navi is next to you; she’s pink and attached to her helmet is a pair of transparent, ribbon-like antennae that curve behind her. You spot a giant net navi at the end of the row that Lan was sitting in, must be Dex’s Gutsman. There is a tall net navi with wings on his back, sitting in front of Roll, guess that’s the young girl in the classrooms net navi.

Finally a blue net navi that seems small, but gives off a vive that you’ve meet him somewhere before, steps forward.

“So that’s Lan’s net navi” you hear Vector say

“Lan and I are ready Miss. Mari” Megaman says

“Okay, beginning simulation” The navi in front of the cyber chalk board says

“Okay time to go over the basics. Viruses are a malicious or corrupted program that disrupts the operating system or cyber network of electronic devices. Since in today’s society with the ever expanding network, you are more than likely to encounter them, a NetNavi must have basic virus busting abilities to navigate safely on the net, otherwise its actions will be limited.”

“They can be deleted either by using the buster or by using chips. First we are going to fight them with the buster, please roll me two 1d20, the DC for this is 13”

Megaman’s right hand transformers, revealing his buster. He begins firing at the simulated viruses; he hits three of them, deleting them quickly before the rest scatter. Two of the Mettaur’s that remained in front of him attack, lifting their pickaxes, before striking the ground and sending shockwaves towards Megaman.

He jumps to the right, firing his buster again hitting one of Mettaur viruses, before he is struck from an attack behind, that disorients him long enough for a second and third strike to hit him from the sides.
He screams in pain, but quickly recovers in time to avoid another hit, he starts firing at the four to his right quickly deleting them, before nearly avoiding an upcoming strike to his left. It takes a while, but Megaman beats the simulated virus group, though he took a bit of beating for it.

“Alright then, Lan. Megaman’s hp was 100 before the battle correct?” Miss.Mari asks

“Yeah, it got down to 53 hp for that simulation. It’s back to 100 now though.”

“Alright then, Lan will you please tell the class the five chips you have gotten from your folder.”

“Three mini bombs, a shotgun, and a sword chip, Miss Mari.” Lan says

“Alright then this time select shotgun and the sword chip for the next simulation. The DC for this next one is 10, roll me two 1d20.

“Ready, Megaman?” Lan says

“Yeah, lets beat this with flying colors” Megaman replies back to him

Megaman’s buster gets a bit of an upgrade, looking a bit more stronger. He fires twice quickly and ends up deleting two of the Mettaur’s In the front and the two behind them. The group of eight remaining Mettaur’s scatter and try to surround Megaman, who ends up dispatching two more before dodging an upcoming attack from his left side.

“As you can see class, certain chips have different effects. For the shotgun it hits both the enemy in front and anything behind it. Certain chips like “Scatter Shot” can hit multiply enemies if it hits successfully, while chips like “Cube” can be used to block an upcoming attack. It’s good for you to experiment with various chips and find what suits your fighting style.” Miss. Mari says

“Lan can you insert the sword chip now.”

“On it Miss. Mari”

“Sword chip, slot in!”

Megaman’s left hand turns into a sword

“As you can see, a mixture of certain chips can be added to give an edge to your net navi against viruses.”

Megaman starts rushing at the remaining Mettaur’s, he slashes a few while hitting the remaining with the shotgun, in a few seconds it’s over and Megaman doesn’t have a scratch on him.

“Nice job, Megaman” Lan says

“Nice operating skills” he replies back

“Good job you two, so does anyone have any questions?”

“So is the data gone from the chip forever? Do I have to go out and get a new chip to replace the old one?” You ask

Miss. Mari shakes her head “It doesn’t mean that you have to go out and get a new one, the data is still there forever burned into the chip, all it requires is for you to go out and *recharge* the chip In a sense to get the data back.” Miss. Mari says

“And where can I recharge my chips?”

“There are many places you can recharge your chips at, such as chip shops, your home, there are designated areas within DenCity that have signs with a Chip with a percentage sign in it, even the school has one. All you have to do is select recharge or type it and your chip folder will be back to 100% usage. Though for some reason blank chips tend to restore themselves when a strong opponent is close by.”

“Hmm, what about combat with other net navis how does that work?”

At this question, Miss. Mari frowns a bit and shakes a her head “ Well I hope you are not playing to have any net-battles on school grounds, Vector.”

“Ahaha… maybe..”

She lets out a sigh “Well as for how combat works with net-battles is, compared to virus busting you can only use the chip once.”

“How come?”

“Well, since chips were basically invented to fight viruses instead of other net navi’s, governments around the world issued a law that all blank chips created and used to store data would be designed in a way that their usages would be only once if a net battle occurs.”

I mean if net navi’s were able to use chips an unlimited amount of times against others, then there would be bigger destruction and damage to net society caused from such fights compared to the damage groups of viruses are capable of doing.”

“Alright, but say a navi is the one causing the problem. Would it still apply to them or would they be considered a virus and allow me to use the chips as many times I want against them.”

“Still no, Vector since navi’s and viruses give off different signals on the net. The chips were basically designed that way to react to those signals, so there are no loopholes. Even if a navi was created out of viruses, if it gives off a signal similar to net navi’s then the rule applies to them to.” She replies back

“So, what about a virus that gives off a net navi signal’s, would the rule apply to them to?”

At that question she gives you a quizzically look “I guess it would apply to them as well, never heard about a virus that gave off a navi signal. But if they existed it would be harder to delete it since they would fall under the same rules if it was a net battle.”

“Last question; are there bonuses that chips add in combat?”

“Yes, in net battles certain chips add bonuses to the dice rolls, an example would be the mini bomb chip that Lan had selected. If it were a net battle instead of a virus simulation, Lan would have received a +3 bonus to his hit roll. The sword chip he used would have added a bonus as well, a +1 to his hit roll. There are other various chips that can add bonuses to your combat rolls during a net battle, at the same time there are certain chips that can help avoid an entire hit from an enemy navi, such as the “Steal” chip can be used to escape a hit or to teleport in front of an ally to protect them from a hit. An X-panel chip would add a +1 to your dodge roll for the next chip that was about to be used, while avoiding an upcoming hit.” She says

“The best information I can give you is experiment and collect various chips, find something that suits your fighting style.” She says while flexing her arms

“Oh and there are rumors that placing certain chips in a certain order that can unlock an even more powerful attack, I think it was called Program Advances.” Miss. Mari adds

“Any more questions, no?” She scans the room “Well then…” she locks eyes with you “ Vector, pop quiz!”

At the beginning of the quest viruses will be easy to beat with just one hit from your buster, but as it progresses you will encounter even stronger viruses and with stronger viruses comes higher DC rolls. So my best advice to you is use chips when need be.”

“So, now that’s out of the way first period is over, enjoy your homeroom time. I’ll be back when second period starts." Miss. Mari says as she exits the room

You walk towards Mary who’s still giving you a bit of a glare. “I’m sorry that I bumped into you this morning ”she seems to ease a bit “And for having my breakfast land on top of your head.” and it seems her defenses are bit back up, before she finally lets out a sigh.

“It’s fine...just don’t let it happen again” she says

Well that’s one problem solv…. You feel a finger on the top of your nose “Literally, don’t let it happen again, otherwise I won’t forgive you so easily next time.” Mary says giving you an intense glare for a second.

Or maybe problem half solved, you think to yourself.

The little blonde girl that’s next to Mary, chuckles a bit before introducing herself “Well I’m glad that matter between the two of you is settled. My name’s Yai Ayanokoji, but you can call me Yai if you want.”

“Mayl Sakurai, but just Mayl will be fine”

“Mary Towa, I’m fine with Mary”

Things might not go according to canon since the social links will play a part. An example being befriending Mr. Match, before the the events of MM3, he might not join Wily and actually give you a heads up that the WWW is back.

you realize that diverging from canon IS the central point of controversy in fanfic quests, yes?

I'm not saying you should or shouldn't follow canon, I'm saying that working so closely to canon is what makes things so dicey.

You get people who care more about making sure what's happening fits what they understand of canon than about what actually happens in the quest, yes. This is in particular a problem when a QM has to spend more time writing than making sure he gets every single detail right.

But you also have other types.

People metagaming for no IC reason at all, not even trying to hide that they want to directly exercise control over a story instead of through a character. This is in part due to "I win" mentalities.

Writing oneself into a corner is also an everpresent specter for a QM. Initially, they most certainly want to write characters that they know, and that's no problem at all. But at some point, there will come a time that the new plot lines enter the story that the QM doesn't actually want to write. They become increasingly restricted by events or hidden details that have not yet been revealed but everyone realizes out of story. If everyone realizes this and either enjoys such development or knows when to agree as one to diverge fully as canon, sure. But there are cases where:
>not everyone wanted to or realized that things weren't canon anymore
where it feels wrong to them for characters to act differently or events to transpire in completely new ways.

and the QM just keeps writing stuff he doesn't want to write until he gets sick of it and burns out.

This is an important danger to watch for considering that BN is such a long runner.


but there IS plenty of potential for things to go well. Just, for the love of god, Wily, and Light, don't do crossovers, ESPECIALLY to other quests. That's a whole new can of worms that I cannot in good faith support.

What's important is that they all come out the woodwork the moment you get within arm's reach of canon and canon characters, whatever you do to them.
