“And in a stunning display and grit and determination, Kat and Alvin have won the match!”

You walk off with Devon. Once you’re clear from the crowd’s view you head directly to the Pokemon center. The league has many, spaced all over the place and with very alert and ready staff. They take your Pokemon and quote only a few minutes. The nurse, seeing your face and apparently not the match, assures you your Pokemon will be fine.

“That was an interesting match.” You turn to see Robin’s mom. She’s wearing a wide brimmed hat and large sunglasses.

“Violet,” you cooly greet her.

“How’s Devon?”

You think back to the tiny scratch on his leg. There will be small scar. But you know you risked much worse.

“He’s fine.”

She laughs. “You pushed him pretty hard. Big risk. Tell me, would Devon as the same of you? Would he ask you to risk your well-being for his ego?”

She smiles condescendingly. “That’s awfully convenient. I wonder if you’d believe that had things gone wrong?”

You wave her off. “Are you going to lecture me? If so, go away. In fact, just go away.”

“Oh, I won’t be around long. Indulge me.”

You roll your eyes. “So I guess you just steamrolled your first battle at the league, right? Sure is easy to judge when you’re not pressed.”

“Oh, I almost lost of my first match, actually. See, I had arranged with my partner for me to cover him as he used Swords Dance and Agility. But he panicked. He jumped into the fray and threw the whole plan off. I kept trying to convince him to go with the plan, and he kept insisting otherwise.”

“But you won in the end.”

She smiles. “I did. I miss being challenged like that. Kat, I know you think ill of me, but you must understand I’m not a monster. Well, no more than any other person. I’m just trying to be the most human I can be.” She runs a finger along your hip. “Do you really think Robin would be here without the right motivation? And her father? Would you be working so hard? After all, you began your journey just looking to get away, didn’t you?”

I mean, it's not like Kat wouldn't be trying for the league without Robinmom around. Robin, maybe she would have other goals and interests...but those would probably be better ones than this one to be honest. Well, maybe she still would want to challenge the league, but she sure seems unhealthily focused on beating her mom. Kinda unfortunate we're enabling it, but there's not much we can do with her mom constantly showing up and Kat herself heading to the league. I guess we could have abandoned all of this and headed off somewhere completely different.

You hesitate, just for a half-second. You see your friends coming over.

Her face turns bright and she winks. “Don’t become weak! We’ll talk later!”

She was just messing with you, right? She’s such a sociopath.

Your friends all gather around and congratulate you as the nurse gives you your Pokemon back.

Jeanine points to the screen above. “Hey! They’re posting your next match!”

You see your face and a trainer card show the Pokemon you’ve used, Devon and Fel. Your opponent is a girl you don’t recognize. She just has a Sigilyph on hers.

“I think I’m going to take it easy until Robin’s match.”

Everything thinks that’s a good idea and you all retire back to the hotel. Robin asks if you’re okay. You give her a kiss and tell her you’ll be fine. You mention her mom came by. She gives an understanding squeeze of your hand and tells you to let her know if you need anything, then she puts herself to work studying. Her smaller Pokemon spread around the room and relax or play with small toys.

You take out Devon. “Hey, how are you doing?”

He leaps up and licks your face. He’s very excited. He loved his match.

“You’re not feeling hurt or abused or anything, are you?” You blurt it out. He nudges under your hand and into your face, trying to get you to cheer up. He whines just a little.

“Okay, okay. Just... if I go too far, let me know, alright? Don’t do anything you don’t want to.”

He pauses. Devon has never been your smartest Pokemon, but you see something happening behind his eyes. A sort of wise understanding. He jumps up on you and licks your face again before you can say anything else.

You cuddle with the big oaf for awhile, then get some material together to study your opponent. Her name is Selina. She won her last match with Sigilyph. One thing you notice is that she became very aggressive when she saw a Pokemon use an unexpected Grass type move, which leads you to believe she has one or more Pokemon with a strong weakness to Grass moves. Her tactics center around stalling and outlasting her opponents instead of direct damage. Looks like her partner was going to use Rain Dance but she stopped them, too.

You get up from off of Devin and take him for a quick walk before Robin’s match.

A camera crew and host are interviewing trainers. The host waves you over.

You debate with yourself for a second, then head over. What the hell, why not?

The mic almost fly’s at your mouth. “This is Channel 5’s Janet Wellstrom with an exclusive interview with Kat, the famous Pokemon trainer, and rumoured soon-to-be viscountess.”

You try not to be too self-conscious. “Hi.”

“Kat, congratulations on your first victory! We just interviewed Alvin, and the credit the whole thing to you. How do you feel?”
“Umm, great. Great. It’s all because of Devon here. He’s always trying his best. I guess that makes me want to try my best too.”

He barks to support your claim. His enthusiasm is infectious.

“That mega-evolution was quite the show. D you have any other Poke-surprises for our audience?”

You take out Aria. She twirls before noticing the camera. She becomes ecstatic and begins showing off immediately. She does her usual singing and dancing and just generally acting like it’s an honor to admire her presence, but you also notice she’s doing a little arm flexing too. She’s proud to have gotten stronger, and eager to prove she’s not just a dainty flower.

The second camera goes back to you while the other watches her performance. “So, Kat, do you have anything you’d like to tell our viewers at home?”

“Thanks. I owe it to Vernon. He taught me and my Pokemon a lot.”

The interviewer’s eyes go wide. “Vernon, the ex-champ?”

You nod. “That’s the one. He’s a great guy.”

Her smile turns fake. Like she doesn’t believe you. He must have a reputation with the press. “Really? Well. What else can you tell us?”

You pet Devon. “Hard work and a true bond with your pokemon will get you through anything. And umm, that you need to make sure to understand your Pokemon and not push them harder than they can go. A lot of people overdo it, you know? Pokemon are loyal, and brave,” you scratch Devon harder, “and it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters. That’s your Pokemon’s health and happiness. A trainer shouldn’t forget that.” You hold your slightly shaky voice together somehow. “I...anyway, just, any young trainers out there, remember that, okay?”

You fill the rest of the interview with some generic talk about teamwork and hard work and believing in yourself and your team and everything else. The interview ends after you spend a considerable amount of time trying to get Aria to stop showing off. You end up having to rush to catch up with your friends.

Robin is nearly hyperventilating. “What. What if. If I. Panic. And. Can’t. Battle.” She holds her small chest. “Big. Crowd.”

You hold your forehead against hers. She’s warm. Don’t worry about winning or losing or anything like that. Just try your best.” You kiss her. Not too lewdly or forcefully. Just enough to get her attention. “Don’t even think about the match,| you whisper, “just think about all the things we’ll do to Clair tonight.”

Clair perks up. “Wait, what? I heard my name.”

Robin tries to slow her breathing. At least now she doesn’t look like she’s going to pass out. A staff member waves her on. It’s time. You quickly try to think of something else to loosen her up.

“Robin! What did one Geodude say to the other?”

She’s caught off guard. “Uh-uh, what?”

“Let’s rock!”

She pauses, then laughs. It’s a bit of a desperate laugh, not unlike her mom’s, but with a friendly tone to it instead of that peircing hostile one. Vance has a good laugh too.

“You’re a bad influence,” Jeanine tells Vance. He’s always the one making terrible jokes.

Even Clair has to roll her eyes.

You, Vance, Jeanine and Clair grab some seats. Vance has some popcorn that he shares with everyone. The announcers introduce all the trainers and they go through the typical pre-amble about the rules for the match. Before it starts, Vance fidgets and leans over to you.

“Look, I’m going to ask you something, and I don’t want you to feel pressured at all. I promised I’d ask, since I owe him.”

“Owe who?”

“Sneasel. He really saved my bacon back when we were caught by Team Imperium. I know this is a big imposition, and I wouldn’t normally ask, and again, you don’t have to-”

“Well...”

There’s an awkward silence.

“It’s okay. I get it. It’s asking too much. I’ll let him down gently.”

“I can’t make any promises, so don’t get too excited, but I’ll definitely consider it. Let me train with him a bit first. If it works out I may use him in a future match.”

He perks up. “Really? That’s great!”

“But only if the training works out and he’s a good match.”

“That’s more than fair. I’ll let him know after Robin’s match.”

Robin’s teammate has a Dugtrio. You see her direct them on what to do. They face off against a Pidgeot and a Carnivine. Robin herself is using Ninetails.

The Dugtrio vanishes into the ground and her Ninetails is left defending, At Vernon’s, she was training it with a focus on defensive. It’s still a difficult task to take both Pokemon at once. What’s the Dugtrio doing? It just pops up once in a while for a quick breath of air, only to vanish into the ground again.

After a long time, all three visible Pokemon seem worn down. Ninetails is doing the worst, though.

Suddenly Dugtrio springs up, hitting Carnivine ineffectively. Robin swaps Ninetails for Joltik. It scrambles below ground as the other two Pokemon pick on Dugtrio.

Carnivine is struck by Thunder and brought down despite it being not very effective, thanks to it's earlier damage. Dugtrio ignores Pidgeot’s attack and just sets up Stealth Rock instead. Pidgeot’s trainer swaps it out in a panic because of Robin’s easy and safe use of Thunder.

She’s facing Golem and Medicham now. Dugtrio is barely hanging on, and Joltik is fresh, crawling under the arena in Dugtrio's tunnels and safely using Thunder without a worry.

“Hey, let me get in on that,” you pat the betters on the shoulder. “My money says the Robin doesn’t lose any Pokemon.”

They take the bet.

Stealth Rock pelts the newly arriving Pokemon.

You watch closely. You can’t really see her face clearly from here, but on the giant screen, you notice that she’s counting to herself. You see her mouth “now!”

Just as Golem uses Earthquake, Joltik fires up out of one of the holes Dugtrio used for air. It’s using Magnet Rise.

Dugtrio is taken out of the fight and Medicham is hit as well. Dugtrio’s trainer replaces it with a Squirtle. Joltik faces off against Medicham. Joltik’s small size and it’s popping in and out of the holes makes it hard for Medicham to land solid hits. It jumps back and uses Mind Reader. Robin uses Protect to stop it’s next move, wasting it’s time. While that’s going on Squirtle is wearing down Golem.

Eventually, Golem is taken down by Squirtle thanks to the the type advantage. Joltik and Squirtle are then able to gang up on Medicham. After he’s taken out, the trainer declines to send Pidgeot against the Stealth Rock, since it’s not strong enough to take that. Even if it could, it wouldn’t stand a chance against both Pokemon.

The match is called for Robin’s side.

You lean down to the guy you placed the bet with. He looks at you quizzically. “What?”

“Robin won. She didn’t lose any Pokemon. Pay up.”

He shrugs. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Vance smiles and cracks his knuckles. “Don’t exaggerate. It’s only been a few months. Although I guess since teeth never grow back, it’ll eventually be a year.”

The welcher backs away. “Hey now. You can’t threaten me. You’re in the tournament!”

“Threatening? Nobody here is threatening.”

“We’re just reminiscing. We can’t help it if you’re listening in on our conversation. Just like we can’t help it if you were to clumsily fall down a flight of punches.

“Okay, okay, here. Just take it,” he hands you the money. “Just...let’s not do anything hasty.”

He quickly makes himself scarce. Vance stretches and leans back. “You know, I used to hate that everyone sees me as a big dumb thug, but sometimes I guess it works out.”

You all run down to congratulate Robin. She’s in a great mood after her win and just getting her Pokemon back from the nurse. She mentions that her mom visited her after the win, but she didn’t let it get to her.

You have a short period of time today, and you’ll have a few hours in the morning tomorrow before your next match.
