You prod the corpse with your foot, nudging the robes further open. Where you had expected to find a wizard was instead a tall and slender creature fashioned from white wood. And not bolted or hinged together either, grown together as if it had seamlessly emerged from the earth this way. It is humanoid in basic shape though one of its arms ends not in a hand but a staff-like growth. It is faceless and once you pull the robes all the way off, sexless as well. A mockery of the human figure but without any of the details.
Needless to say, this is probably not Old Bart. According to Eugene, it’s probably the work of a spirit of some kind but you don’t know how good of an explanation that is, considering that he arrived at it by process of elimination.

Behind you, Hiss seems to be trying to boss Eugene into spontaneously developing more knowledge on the matter. You can understand her frustration, having been denied a soul that had already escaped her once.

"Hey Eugene," you call out, rescuing him from being harangued further. "We need to set this on fire."

He stares at you blankly.
"Yes and?"

"What? We should, we've already made the mistake of leaving wizardly business like this untouched twice before, not going to do it again."
Not that that's likely to strike a chord with him, he wasn't present for either of those times.

"No, I understand. But what do you want me to do about it?"

"Uh...set it aflame? Wizard up a fire, you seem like the best man for the job. If you don't mind, that is."

"I'm not a fire wizard! Do you think I can just wave my staff and summon flame?"

"You can't? You can't do that?"
He shakes his head so you reach into your bag and toss your flint and tinder to him.
"Well, there you go."

You step down, the ruined mansion still covered in shrinking puddles of half-melted ice. This place is an absolute wreck, it's amazing that the outer walls are even still standing! People will probably be coming to investigate very soon and you're not sure if you want to be around for that.
But before you can worry about any of that, you need to see to the others. You know that Aash was carrying them to safety but your Soulsight didn't see what condition they were in.
You go out what's left of the backdoor to find Liss lying in the backyard, Aina crouched down beside her. Several yards from them is Aashenpreet herself and for a moment you almost don't recognize her, scuffed and bruised as she is. She's kneeling, her hands held out in prayer.

Bunyip is just standing around and sniffing trees, tongue lolling out of his mouth. He seems blithely unconcerned about the entire situation and was probably entirely unhelpful to Aashenpreet and the twins. His head perks up when he sees you and he wanders over for a head-scratch.
Aside from him, nobody seems to have noticed you yet.

Sorry about the delay on this one, had a phone call.

You decide to waste no time in announcing yourself as you step through the door.
"Everyone alright?"

Aashenpreet looks up, breaking off her prayer in an instant and bounding over to you with deceptive speed. She sweeps you up in a bear hug that threatens to squeeze the air from your lungs. You splutter a little but decide to just grin and bear it.

"Cennen! Thank Aashimid you're safe! I wasn't sure and-"

Her grip loosens enough to let you slide out, holding your hands up in a noncommittal gesture.
"It's fine, everything's fine. Thanks for taking these two to safety."

"Oh, that? It's nothing to thank me for, it was the right thing to do."
You decide not to mention that just doing the 'right' thing was something you were becoming increasingly appreciative of. Would Hiss or Oster have done the same? Would you?
"There's really no need to thank me," Aashenpreet continues. "I didn't help fight them off, I just took the others and ran."

"Honestly, that's the best thing you could have done."
You picture her under the same attack Hiss had endured just before but without protection, her skin bubbling and splitting open as it boiled from the inside. You try not to picture that again.

You look past her to the twins. Liss is still lying on the grass and while it looks like Aina almost got to her feet as she saw you, she remains by her side.

"I might have hurt that one a little," Aashenpreet mutters. "I didn't have the time to be gentle."

"Nothing some heal-all won't fix," you say as you walk past her.

Aina finally gets to her feet as you approach with a bottle in your hand. Liss looks to be out of it, not entirely unconscious but woozy at best.
Aina, on the other hand, looks very awake and not a little pissed off.
"What was that? What happened?"

"I'll explain it later, I promise."

"You always say that. And it's always too late."

"You've seen what we do. Sometimes we come across dangerous people, and more often than not, they end up somewhat mad at us. This was one of them"

> Tell her what happened.

You decide against just pushing her out of the way. Something's clearly weighing on her mind and shoving her about isn't going to make her feel better.
"It's really a long story but basically Hiss and I killed a wizard. Or at least, we tried to. It was ages ago before we even met you. Only it turns out that he's not all that dead and he's mad."

Aina's face doesn't change, as if you'd only confirmed something she'd suspected already.
"So the only reason we all got attacked, that the Lady's house is ruined...is because of you?"

Oh, now you see what's been eating at her. You're really not sure how to answer this one.
"Yes? But it's not-"

Aina pushes you back ineffectually, her face screwed up.
"Give me the potions, I'll take care of her. And then I don't want any of you visiting my sister again."

"Ain-"

"Get out," she sobs. "All you do is make everything worse."

You can't stop yourself from grimacing, now is not the time for this. Did she not see what you just went through? Are you supposed to apologize for defending yourself? Whether she's right or not, her head clearly isn't in the right spot right now. You're not sure if yours is either. Getting into an argument would probably solve nothing.

"Fine."
You pass her the Heal-all.
"I assume you know how to use these by now."

You stomp off, your sense of victory somewhat spoiled. Aashenpreet picks up on this and intercepts you before you walk back inside.

You sigh and stop walking, making sure you're out of Aina's earshot first. Bunyip cozens up to you for further ear-scratches.
"Do you ever wonder how you know if you're doing the right thing or not?"

"Is this about the the twins?"

"You knew?"

She shrugs.
"Aina seemed a little distraught."

"I just can't believe all these awful things happened to them just because I saved them from their crazy village. And you know what? They were going to die there. That place was a shithole."
She laughs, a soft quiet sound that sounds almost ashamed. You glare at her.
"What?"

"It's nothing, I just think I remember us having this same conversation back when we first met. Only, I think it was the other way round. What happened to building things faster than you knocked them down?"

"In hindsight," you grumble, "it seems a little naive. But it's still true."

"But you don't feel that way."

"Uh?"
You blink. Since when was Aash so confident?
"I guess not."

"There's nothing wrong with you, Cennen. You're just reaching the limits of spiritual well-being that your ramshackle system of moral beliefs can give you."

"I'm not sure where your going with this and also, ramshackle?" My-"

Aashenpreet actually interrupts you deliberately, another oddity.
"What I'm saying is that your beliefs have no center, it's only natural that they can crumble when they must be tested. R-remember when you told me that you didn't need Aashimid or his lessons? Maybe you do now."

“All I’m saying,” Aashenpreet continues. “Is that in the end, morality and righteousness cannot stand without faith. They lack foundation.”

“Alright. Lay it on me.”

She splutters, stumbling over her next few words. She clearly hadn’t thought you would actually acquiesce.
“Excellent! But uh, where to begin?”

“Isn’t this taught to you?”

“Technically, yes. But part of being on a pilgrimage shrine is that nobody visits you unless they’re already devout. I’ve never had to instruct one of the faithless before. Maybe I should begin with a simple lesson like…”
She claps her hands.
“Of course. Livatam is a good introduction. You see, a long time ago there lived a raja in what would become Pataliputna. This was before man and snake were one as they should be and as such, he was a flawed ruler. He was a virtuous man but he was human and thus his city was imperfect and seeded with ruin and vice. He had a son, the only one his wives had ever borne him, named Livatam. He loved his son and sought to protect him from the evils of the world, not knowing that the evils without can only be warded by accepting truth within. Livatam grew to be a young man in his guarded pleasure palace, unknowing and ignorant of the world around him. But as he grew tired of his boundaries, he began to test them and sought to go out into his father’s city. And the raj relented for a total of three times three visits, all supervised and cleansed. Wherever he would go, men would run before him so as to not burden the prince with the evils of the world. But Livatam was no fool and are you listening??”

Her voice rises as your eyes drift away, snapping you back to attention.
“Sorry.”

“In time, Livatam escaped from his palace in disguise and saw the world for what it was for the very first time. He saw the evil and weakness inherent in humanity and fled the city entirely."
1/?
>>
>>43614979
And then in the wilderness, lost and alone, he sought an answer from Aashimid. Aashimid was known to those Qesh back then even if they did not understand His true intentions. He meditated underneath a tree for three days and three nights, knowing no food or sleep or nothing else of the evil world.”

“But by the end of that, he figured something out?”

‘Don’t interrupt! And no, of course he didn’t. He was a human. But he found somebody else instead. On the fourth dawn, a serpent made itself known to him among the tree branches. He told the serpent of his woes and of his uncertainties with the world and the snake repaid him with revelation. The world was evil but only because humans made it that way. Not through any intention but simply through being weak and their governance reflecting that. Human life is suffering and when they die, they are just reborn again upon the wheel. The only way to escape that would be to seek servitude beneath purer beings, the only creature that was both mortal and of the spirit realm. And even beyond that, the only true escape from the wheel of reincarnation and suffering was to devote yourself to the serpent’s principles, to find joy in their purpose. So that one day they may devour you and take your soul forever within themselves, freeing you from the wheel. Only in snake-stomach oblivion is there any peace, any lack of suffering. And so the prince, having attained more wisdom than any mortal human before him, offered himself to the snake to be devoured and that was so.”
Aashenpreet stops, clearly expecting you to be more impressed than you are. She suddenly looks rather embarrassed.
“Did I tell that right? That’s a very short version, I think I must have messed it up.”

Serpents are no more infallible than humans, because if you were you'd not have fallen in the first place. EVERYONE screws up, me, you Hiss, Tanni, The Serpent King, EVERYONE. Implying race or an accident of birth makes someone inherently better is at it's core faulty. Some people may like me be born with more potential, but that's just it, potential. It does not mean you're perfect or that you'll even exceed someone else. Oster is STILL far better at swordplay and stealth than I am, for example. Hiss by virtue of being a serpent and royalty ought to be able to do nothing wrong. Do you REALLY believe that?

> "It was a fine enough telling, it's just the message I disagree with."
The Creator decided humans should do their own thing, so he took the spirits back to the Dreaming. Dragons resisted, enslaved humans and became snakes as punishment. This means the creator thought humans should govern themselves right? Your story sounds like propaganda to justify human subjugation, which is the opposite of what the creator wanted
>>
> "It was a fine enough telling, it's just the message I disagree with."

You honestly don't doubt that Aashenpreet told it wrong, she doesn't really have the presence to be an incredible storyteller and it did sound rushed. But you have an inkling that it could have been told to you in the best way possible and you still wouldn't like it.
"It was a fine enough telling, Aash. It's just the message I disagree with."

She frowns.
"Maybe that was the wrong lesson to lead with. The point is that human life is suffering a-"

"Is that different from snake life, though? I didn't want to bring this up but you haven't really had the happiest time of it."

"That's different," she huffs. "It is an elevated form."

"Do you really think you and all your kind are just better than humans?"

"Yes," she says without hesitation.

"Even Hiss?"

"Even Hiss."

"So you like her more than you like me."

"Oh come on, you know that's not true. I like you a lot more than her, I hate her. But..."
She looks uneasy.
"She's still better than you. No, that's the wrong word. Higher? I'm not sure if your language has the exact translation."
She groans again.
"That was the wrong thing to tell you, wasn't it? You're not ready. But you have to recognize it deep down. You devote yourself to her, you serve her. I know you say it's a partnership but you are a human serving a snake and you love it. It makes you feel better than anything else, doesn't it? Better than what your life was before you met her. It does, doesn't it?"

You don't answer her.

If that were the case, I'd have not tried to stop her ascension, if that were the case i'd have let her eat you and Rock, and kill most everyone here. I love her, but I don't worship her. Worship implies I am blind to her thousand fold faults. Trust me I'm more aware of them than most. If your "higher" form was correct Rock would stay happy in the dreaming, not be here with us. Not envy us for what we are. If your higher forms were correct, Dragons would not have been cast down, for there were Higher than humans, and must have known best for them. Your entire caste system is based on your elders perverting your religion, to fit their own ends Aash. They crave dominion and wish to sew docility, so they spin such tales to make it seem like the creator has no greater purpose than for us to serve, but if that were the case, the dragons your forebears would still be commanding Humanity. Have you seen a dragon, other than that one time I wore one's form? If the higher forms was correct, Spirits would rule over us all, and they do not.

Aashenpreet hisses, her teeth replaced by a row of jagged saw-teeth, a long forked tongue flickering between them. When she speaks, it is with forced restraint.
"I will not hold your words against you. I know you mean well-"

"I doubt you know anything about what I mean. And for what it's worth, Hiss can't eat my soul anyway. It's all fucked up. But maybe not as fucked up as you."

You just shake your head and stand up to leave. You don't know what to do with this. Maybe you should have just pretended to like her messed-up story. But it's best to leave her be for now.

"Cennen," she says as you walk away. She sounds wretched.
"I don't hate humans. Or any of you. I really like you and Oster a lot. I have more human friends here than I do snake ones. So I don't know why you have to take this so personally."

You let her be.

Rather than going back inside the ruined mansion you walk around, taking the old garden way between the fence and the wall. Bunyip follows you for a bit but when it becomes apparent that you're not in a patting mood, he whines and wanders off to sit down somewhere.

As you come around the front yard, you hear the gate opening and you freeze. Shit. Have the city guards come? You really don't want to get involved with them.
You try to peek out stealthily but the person coming through is much better at this than you. They see you immediately and they don't take the sudden surprise well, swinging a sword right at you!

Roll 1d100 to dodge.

Yeah it should probably be best of five at most.

You stumble out of the way of the sword well enough but only accidentally, your feet slipping on the wet grass beneath you. You fall on your butt hard enough to make you wince, shortly before wedging your left arm in the fence.
It hurts but not as much as the idea that this is how you're going to fucking die, on your arse with an arm stuck in a fence while an intruder disembowels you.

Oster, naturally, laughs his goddamn head off when he sees you. He sheathes his sword, trying and failing to control himself.
"Is this a bad time?"

"Fuck off, you were the one who swung at me."
You don't try to defend what you look like right now. You know it's impossible. You focus on pulling your arm free instead.

-Cennen, are you alive?-
Rock is sitting on Oster's shoulder. What are they doing together? And now that you're actually getting a good luck, you can't help but notice that Oster himself looks worse for wear. Not injured but scuffed, tired.

"I'm fine Rock. What happened to you?"

-We found the wizard.-

"Tree-wizard," Oster adds. "Something weird. But we killed it all the same."

Wait. There's more than one of them?

Sorry guys, I feel very under the weather all of a sudden so I'm going to archive now and leave it at that. Ick, I can't explain it. Lately I've just been feeling so sluggish and shitty.
I'll do 64.5 a bit later, check the twitter for when. It should cover what's left of Taldenral for now.
