Sup, /tg/. Last night, a little thread popped up about an old (and recently rebooted) lego line called Bionicle. Known for its lore and dedicated fanbase, in this thread a group of us came together and discussed how to make a game happen.

Several things happened, including a google doc for idea cataloging (horribly messy right now)

Link Here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RmGLUBNkpkZf-Nl-rQRh_0kMiTuynB22ZNhbuQcV_rA/edit

There's also a skype chat, contact plexwolfe on skype (that's me) if you want to join the team!

In the mean time, we can continue in this thread, just casually chatting about ideas and concepts surrounding the universe and how they apply to tabletop.
>>
If you'd like to join the Skype chat, please send a contact request to either "plexwolfe" or "budu46". The former's location should be Arlington, United States and the latter's should be somewhere in Finland.

If you would like to contribute, most discussion of the system is occurring in the group chat with the Google Doc mostly being used to document things.

It's a pity that Rhotuka were underused as a concept thanks to their toy gimmick status. The actual mechanics for them were pretty interesting. What with how any living being could learn how to create them, and every user had their own unique power.
>>
>>43585040
Speaking of, is the whole team here?
>>
>>43585160
That plagued much of the story honestly. I still can't forgive them for getting rid of the Kaita concept just because they stopped making them as toys. Also that characters could rebuild themselves if they knew how to. So many neat ideas came from the bare fact that it was all a Lego line, but they barely made use of them.

>>

Yeah, honestly I haven't updated in ages, just too little brown/tan stuff around. The weapon is my favorite part.
>>
>>43585542
Oh yeah. Elemental powers, combined with neat mask powers and whichever tool or weapon they have, and they're really underutilized.
Think of how nice the movies would have been. Instead, we get:

MOL:
>everyone brandishes blades but there's no weapon combat because of the anti-violence policy
>lame elemental power usage for the same reason
>everyone forgot they had mask powers
LOMN:
>no elemental powers
>okay mask power usage, not for fight scenes though
>still not much in the way of weapons, at least the bad guys shoot stuff
WOS:
>very brief hand-to-hand combat, heroes actually smash stuff with their tools
>no mask powers
>instead of creative shows of elemental power, they shoot spinners
TLR:
>actual combat but it's lame as fuck, no choreography
>demonstrations of elemental power are just them blasting a jet of fire or water
>no masks yet again apart from the Mask of Life

And lets not get into how the reboot webisodes handle action.

>>
>>43585707
The movies were mainstream things aimed at kids, so they were handled in the same fucktarded way most kids movies are. The comics and books tended to be better about that stuff.

TLR is also objectively awful and needs to be set on fire.
>>
Mmmmm my childhood. I remember when the borohk -kal first appeared. Watching the animated commercials for each was fucking fantabulous.
>>
>>43585707
The lack of powers in LoMN was kind of justified in that the Toa Metru had used up almost all their elemental energy fighting the Morbuzakh and Krahka and it takes a while to recharge. For some reason this is never explained in the movie itself, but it's mentioned in the books a few times.
>>
>>43586889

I remember being confused as all hell with the Metru Nui comics. They're fighting these weird sentient vines but after they kill the not!Gravemind or whatever it's never mentioned again. Also apparently one of the Matoran betrayed them but I don't remember how.

I also remember not liking the movie that much, or any of the movies really. They all felt just so soulless; cheap mercenary endeavors just trying to cash in on the name.

A far cry from those kickass interactive games. Fucking Myst for kids, those were.

I might be a little biased, but not just for a kid's story, the lore is incredible and has one of the world is wonderfully rich.

Toa Metru arc was the best. Hordika had great villains, but edgy Vakama got on my nerves too much.
Bohrok-Kal were patrician as fuck.
Inika were breddy cool and I liked how bleak Voya Nui was, but the designs were just a little too out there for me.
Mahri were neat, and the arc was cool, but it just didn't have the same sense of wonder as a physical island.
In terms of criminally untapped fluff fodder, the Toa Hagah (and their contemporaries) & Brotherhood Wars could've been GOAT.

Yeah, the Morbuzakh was created by Makuta Teridax to make all of the Matoran paranoid and more likely to accept his increasingly authoritarian police state. Prophecy said that the Great Disks could defeat the Morbuzakh, but only one Matoran from each district knew where a Disk was. And of course Nidhiki and Krekka were trying to stop the Toa Metru along the way.

That mini-arc was actually one of the reasons I like 2004 the best, since the Metru Nui Matoran came off pretty much as normal people suddenly thrust into positions of danger and importance. Most of them were scared, many were unhelpful, and some were only in it for the glory. Even Ahkmou, the Po-Matoran who was actually working for Nidhiki, wasn't really "evil" - what would you do if a giant mutant assassin suddenly showed up in front of you, promising great rewards in return for an artifact of power and making unsettling implications about what would happen if you refused?

The prototype to the Morbuzakh, named Karzahni in honor of the devil-figure of Matoran legend, also showed up a couple times later on. When the Toa Metru were traveling back to Metru Nui to rescue all the Matoran they originally left behind, Karzahni helped cure Nokama of a poisoned wound in exchange for some energized protodermis (which nearly killed him). Later on Vakama runs into him again, Karzahni tells him about the Order of Mata Nui and their extensive ruse to get Vakama & co. chosen as Toa, and promptly got killed by Teridax.

>>43587799
The large difference in power between ability scores is intentional. A single Toa should be able to take on a horde of Matoran, for example.
The system is also primarily designed for Matoran campaigns, where you would be rolling 2d6+(modifier*2) in most situations.

Noob Vakama was great. Dude forged the Vahi and solo'd Makuta (mostly). Pohatu exists too. "muh kick" and "muh rocks" were stupid and his whole character existed to make Onua look cool.
>>
>>43592130

>implying Bronua needed anyone to make him look cool.

Vakama was mostly just whiny. I honestly wasn't a big fan of the characterization of the Toa Metru. Nuju was just Diet Coke K-dog, and Nokama existed solely to pat Vakama on the back when things got hard. The rest were basically devoid of personality.

Unlike the original team, who were all very distinct in how they acted.
>>
>>43592203
>devoid in personality

I enjoyed how Onewa could be a massive jackass though.
>>
>>43592462

Yeah but that was a role I felt was much better filled by Tahu in the previous gen.
>>
>>43592203
>Unlike the original team, who were all very distinct in how they acted.

The Mata's personalities were practically defined by their elements, the Metru's were more rooted in their occupation. I liked that instead of being total rehashes, they had traits that differentiated them from the Mata, even if they shared some traits. They just weren't as memorable (whiny Vakama aside) or "classic".

The Inika/Mahri had it worse, since by that time they were really running out of interesting personalities, but at least they didn't have to go through the same "learn to work together" phase as the rest since most of them already considered each other bros.
>>
>>43586944
>They all felt just so soulless; cheap mercenary endeavors just trying to cash in on the name.
After seeing The Legend Reborn and the later Hero Factory show, I personally have developed a newfound appreciation for the original trilogy. Incredibly flawed movies, yet I really enjoy their production values, the art design, music, sound effects and shit. That's where all the effort went.

I can rewatch them almost endlessly, whereas I can never get through TLR in one go. It doesn't even have as many amusing CGI fuckups as the other three, which are fun to pick out.
>>
>>43593249

>The Mata's personalities were practically defined by their elements

Perhaps, but I still felt like they played off each other much better. Each Toa had his or her own special relationship and perspective with the others. Tahu was constantly at odds with Kopaka, but the two had a high level of professional respect for each other. Onua got along with everyone but was particularly close with Pohatu and Lewa. Pohatu was the only one able to form what felt like a genuine friendship with Kopaka. Gali had her back and forths with Tahu. Kopaka liked Gali well enough but preferred to avoid her because she was the only one (except maybe Onua) who saw past his icy attitude and knew his sincere compassion and altruism.

I never got that with the Metru (or any other team, really). Vakama and Nokama were fairly close, but beyond that they all treated each other the same.
>>
>>43593917
Yeah, relationships were really lacking in the later years, instead we got heroes spouting lame one-liners.

The Mahri saga did have a hint of it, with Jaller not knowing what to make of Matoro practically taking over as a leader figure, but they got over it in like a paragraph. Gotta move the plot, have more action and devote every second line of dialogue to nihilistic sarcasm!
>>
>>43594072

Wasn't there also supposed to be some kind of implied romantic tension between Jaller and Hahli?
>>
>>43594109
Yes but nothing ever came out of it. It was around that time that they phased out romance from the story.
>>
>>43585542

Someone should scan a bunch of the parts and turn them into 3d models. Imagine 3d printing just a bunch of pieces/whole bionicles for dirt cheap. You could either spend a bit more to get the full color-range, or glorious solid black/gold/white versions of people.

Except for the dark age of 2007-2010. All those broken joints...

Remember when they gave used actual fists instead of the usual socket piece?
I think I have a grand total of one fist still in one piece.
>>
>>43621302
I think all of mine are still intact, because I never dared to take them apart (which is I presume not something Lego ever intended its customers to be scared of doing). But I do have numerous other rectangular sockets that broke, as well as the infamous lime ones.

>tfw no movie about Mata

Always felt weird that the first Bonkle movie was about the story's third year, then two and three were a prequel and a shoehorned-in interquel respectively, and neither focused on the Toa team that most people would be familiar with. Technically the first didn't either.
>>
>>43624035
There was supposed to be one, but it failed at some point of the production, just like a lot of other early bionicle media did. There were stuff like a Toa Mata video game in the works, and even a TV series.
>>
>>43624157
Yeah, heard about some of those. Though it sucks that we never got one, maybe it's for the better, since they were still testing waters at the time and Lego themselves didn't quite know what Bionicle should be like.

I know there were fans who wanted to do a 2001 adaptation but they never succeeded due to various reasons.

Really don't like these revisualizations. They just don't look right with flesh.

And 2010-2015. The switch to Chinese plastics made Lego bricks feel and act cheap.

>>43624157
I've got an early Bionicle game for GBA but I can't recall the title. It was brutally difficult as a child, haven't tried it in years though

Holy shit, Mata Nui was confirmed for giant robot in 2001?!
>>
>>43627943
Much earlier. The giant robot was the base concept they built the rest of the story around.

The whole idea for that was from Christian Faber.
He had some sort of severe illness, and based Bionicle off the train of thought that there were little warrior guys in his meds who would fight off his disease. Which incidentally is why the canisters are pill-shaped.

The best part about all this is that in retrospect, having Bionicle stand for "Biological Chronicle" was a dead giveaway.

Yep.

(That little 99 under Faber's signature? The yearly timestamp. That pic is from 1999.)

I never knew it stood for Biological Chronicle. Still pretty crazy that Mata Nui is a giant robot who became a planet just so that he could get healed of his sickness, more or less.

I wish there was more of a mix of biomechanical and natural universes. I love natural stuff, but mixing it with biomechanical stuff sounds interesting

That was one of the things I couldn't get enough of. Making robotic/cyborg characters have to get along in a purely natural world is criminally underutilized.
>>
>>43629564
Do you have any more cool art like that? I love what it's describing.
>>
>>43630498
Kinda? There's some pretty weird concept art of Bonkle out there, but it's a pretty mixed bag. Especially since that one is from 1999, which is before anyone knew what they were doing.
I'll just dump some more.

Here's some art that connects the Matoran to the Bohrok--another idea that was around from the start.

Christian Faber has been sharing lots of early concept artwork and general promotional images over at his blog Faber Files. Sadly not everything -- he said some time ago that he's found an old stack of really early concept material, but he stopped uploading it because he's busy with other work.

It would be really nice if we not only got all this neat concept art stuff, but also high res versions of all promo artwork that came out during the line's run. There's still some pics we only have low quality versions of, and there's no way of knowing what we might have missed out on -- for example a bunch of never before seen, good quality 2002 Toa Nuva CG renders only surfaced last year or so when someone shared the contents of two Bionicle style guide CDs.

Biomedia Project actually has quite a bit of of this kind of thing. Like, it's an almost 2 GB folder full of concept art, CG renders, etc.

I don't think gold was actually overused. It showed up in like 1-2 sets per year on average, and usually only in relatively "special" ones (Takanuva, Lhikan, etc.). Silver, on the other hand, was in practically every set from '03 through '08.

Bump and a query?

What is the best issue of the comic run and why is it Divided We Fall?

Anyone know if there's an archive I can get at to read them?
My issues are all at home in my longboxes.

Rule of thumb, if there's Bionicle stuff you wanna look up, be it videos, online games or comics, check the BioMedia Project.

Although I don't know whether they have all the comics, like those that were exclusively made for the graphic novels.

You're right, I was probably thinking of 2006 with regards to the gold, which was a year when it became a secondary color for more sets than usual. It wasn't as overused normally.

One thing the reboot excels at is making such nice looking art pieces like the "Month of..." pictures. They're an interesting break from the CGI renders we've been used to and they add some desperately needed imagery to the new world they're trying to build up. It's just too bad they're only put out on Facebook instead of having a bigger presence in media, and they only show the Toa chilling around. Which it not bad in and of itself, but some story-relevant pieces done in the same style would be great.

They could really use some closer views of the characters, like the sketches and concept art they do of the toy prototypes. I almost wonder whether it it would have been better if, instead of making those animations, they had used the format of the Mata Nui Saga, and told the story through gorgeous static artwork. Although we may not be getting a Netflix show without the animations testing the waters.
