You are John Bayliff, a Dishwasher at Mackleroy’s, a Brewpub in the Midwest.

((Gains since last quest: Firearms and combat engineering as level 2 skills, and Summon Jenna.)

Your date with Jenna yesterday ended on a very good note and you feel like you could take on the world... If you could have slept in. It’s 7:30 Sunday morning, your only morning shift, you hop off of the bus and head for the back door. You’re not used to being up this early but were able to get an energy drink before the ride, you take a sip of it as you enter the building, the back of the house is extremely clean, pretty much immaculate, you pass your station and only a few dishes are piled up, whoever took over last night did a good job.

“Moooorning John” a masculine gritty voice is heard out of your vision, you turn to see Nick looking in an absolutely miserable state.

“Oh, hi, good morning, you don't look too good, are you alright?” you ask, a little frightened at Nick’s disheveled appearance.

“Oh right... No need to worry John, I was just up all night playing video games” he takes a sip of his coffee, perking up a little bit. “Whew that’s the stuff, if you want coffee feel free to pour a cup or 12”

‘Jesus does this guy have an addiction or something!?’ you think to yourself “I’ll probably grab a cup in a bit” you hold up your can of ‘BOOST’. “I just started drinking this but I can put it away.” you say, Nick gives a thumbs up and a nod, returning to setting up the kitchen pans and ingredients. You Pour a cup and head into the break room, there’s no one in sight, you take this as an opportunity to listen to some music.

You put your earbuds in, listen to some tunes, and close your eyes, occasionally taking sips of BOOST... You open your eyes to see a couple of people in the breakroom chatting, after further inspection you realize it’s Amy and a guy you haven’t seen before, looks pretty young, senior in high school tops. you pull your earbuds out.

“Good morning John” says Amy with a smile on her face, she doesn’t look tired at all, you start to feel a bit jealous when the boy starts to speak up.

“G-good morning!” he stutters out, must be his first day... or he’s just a really nervous.

“Good morning... I’m John” you extend a hand, the young boy reaches out and shakes it, his handshake is very limp.

“I’m Taylor...” He looks down at the ground. “It’s nice to meet you.” The kid is kinda cute, like a puppy. You turn to Amy.

“I take it he’s training with you?” you ask. Amy gives a nod.

“Yep! He’ll need to work on his confidence a bit but I think he’s got what it takes.” Amy replies, a blush appears on Taylor’s face. “Well, I gotta grab some stuff from my truck, so I’ll be back in a bit, you two get to know each other, kay?”

“Sure” you reply, Taylors remains silent, the blush on his face growing heavier. Amy exits the room, leaving you two to an awkward silence looms between the two of you.

“Nervous?” You flatly ask the kid, gets a bit flustered “Don’t be, your first couple days might be rough, but you’ll get the hang of it.” You smile at him, this seems to ease the mood a little bit.

“Th-thank you...” Taylor mumbles.

“No worries man, I’m sorta new too, i know how it goes.” You say with a chuckle. Taylor grows a smile. “So, what do you do for fun?”

“Well... I like video games.” Says Taylor.

“Oh?” you inquire. “I what kind? I play some every now and then.”

“I like shooter games like ‘Iron Cross’ and ‘Call to Arms” Taylor says getting a bit more relaxed.

“Iron Cross is a pretty good game, not the biggest fan of Call to Arms but that’s just me.” you both smile, Amy is back from her truck with a server apron and an invoice book.

“Alright I’m back, hopefully you two got along?” She says interrogatively.

“Yeah” you say, “just took some common ground is all, right?” you look to Taylor.

“R-Right!” Taylor responds.

‘Still a little nervous but I’m sure he’ll get used to things’ you think to yourself. ‘oh wait’ you turn to Amy. “Am i working solo or with someone?” You ask, hearing Sunday mornings are bad.

“Funny you should ask, Jenna was supposed to help you but she’s running late, something about fixing a tire?”
Amy says.

“Yeah hehe, she was driving me home last night when her tire popped, no biggy, I can handle a bit of it on my own.”

“You sure? Taylor and I can help you until Jenna get’s here.” Amy says with a smile.

“I got this on my own, you can focus on properly training the kid, how long will it be til Jenna’s here?” you ask with a smile, Amy returns in kind

“She said something like an hour, is that alright?” Amy asks.

“Not like I got a say in the matter.” you chuckle as you take off your jacket. “looks like it’s time to clock in, good luck to you guys.”

“You as well.” The pair say in unison. you walk over to the POS and clock yourself in and step into the pit, you take this opportunity to put in your earbud and take a deep breath...

You take your nozzle and something about it seems stronger than usual, wait it isn't the hose that's stronger... It's you! a grin grows across your face as you begin to decimate the dishes each plate growing weaker than the last, gravy and queso have nothing on you.

On the other side of your machine, you start an organized pile of dishes to make it easier to expedite later, The cook's window is filling up with tickets, you didn' realize but Nick appears to be the only one on the line at the moment.

You slow down a little bit to carfully remove so ground in soil on the dishes. "Ey Nick, You doing alright?" Nick looks somewhat flustered.

"I'll be fine, Kim and Wally share a ride and their car broke down... They called me 5 minutes ago and will be here in about 20 minutes, so I can hold up til then-!" a ticket rings up, the scratching noise almost like nails on a chalkboard resonoates in the back of the house "If these sluts would stop ordering damn food!" the servers looks a little miffed but move on with their day. Amy doesn't really react at all and Taylor nearly ducks for cover.

'There we go, that's the Nick I know'. you think to yourself. 'Sundays don't seem so bad.'

You in a moment of pity and distraction you spray yourself in the face with a ladle, the bourbon sauce sticks to your face leaving you uncomfortable but nothing you can handle. "Just keep fighting and you'll get through this." As soon as you finish your thought Margo comes to the back and makes an announcement.

"Hey guys... there's a bus that just pulled into the lot, there's a lot of 'em." You turn to Nick who you see looking up at the clock, a look of soullessness eminates from him.

"That's fine Margo... The other two should be here soon enough..." Nick continues to pound out tickets at a decent pace though a melancholy oozes from the kitchen.

You shuffle past Nick who is doing fairly well for someone going alone on a busy shift. You organize the plates and lifts them to their respectful spots, you head back to see the pile of dishes growing some more, The door to the back opens up and three sillouettes are seen, when brought into the light, they appear to be Wally, Kim, and Jenna.

"Talk about timing." you say out loud somewhat exasperated. The three waste no time clocking in.

"Eh Nick sorry about that, i'll buy you a couple drinks after work sound good?" Wally says, almost like this has happened before, Nicks aura had grown more bright so to speak.

"Yeah that sounds great actually, glad you two could make it." Kim is quiet and moves to her usual spot and begins busting out omelettes. Jenna walks to you.

You slide the dishes into the machine and leave the rest to Jenna, You pour out the silverware and spray it off, the red light on Eva goes black, you lift up the doors and slide the silverware into the machine and pull the doors down.

"So how much the tire cost you?" you ask filling the void of conversation, rinsing away at dishes.

"About $140, had to get two tires replaced so it'd be properly aligned..." she says a bit frustrated "Again, sorry I'm late".

"No worries, I'm just glad you're here." you smile at her forgetting to say that before you two got to work. "You had enough to replace it?" you ask.

"Yeah I made good tips this week so I'm doing alright, thanks for asking though." she gives you a soft smile that you'd expect from Amy. it throws you off a bit. more dishes are coming back but it appears the breakfast rush is over.

"Does serving make that much money?" you ask, having never worked a tipped job before.

"It can be, but it depends on a lot of things, like Some customers will tip generously, but others will give a penny on a $50 bill" Jenna mutters, probably speaking from experience.

"y'owch that's gotta suck, But I take it most people tip alright?"

"Yeah, I usually get 18% of a bill usually, which is pretty good."

"I see..." You pound away at some dishes, the pile is quickly dying off. "Does it beat hourly wage?"

"Well, it does if there's a lot of people to serve, then yes but if it's dead then, I'd say no, we do at least make minimum wage if our tips don't make the cut though."

"Oh? Jenna tilts her head. "Why not?"

"Well, I treat people who treat me right, but if someone treats me bad I'm not the best of putting that to the side." You say, kind of sad to admit a flaw. "So I'd probably be nice to some people but ruse people would probably get really bad service." you say.

"Ah, yeah, that's fair you do need to have a fairly even head to do this job, and it's not for everyone." Jenna says reassuringly. The dish tower was brought down like a casino in Vegas, very precise and beautifully eliminated, you pat yourself on the back when suddenly, Claire tosses 1 last plate into the tub, splashing you a bit. you can hear a small chuckle from Jenna

You point a finger over at Claire and speak to Jenna. "Case in point" you spray off the last dish and put the full rack in the machine. It's over. For today at least. Jenna stands next to you, like she's about to say something.

"Today was a good shift." She says, you almost thought it was something more profound but to be fair it was a good shift, barely any setbacks.

"Yeah, thanks for the hand, good to see you can keep up with me." you wink at her, holding out a fist. She pounds it.

"Please, of course I can keep up with you, you're like a turtle."

"Me? A turtle? Please!" This back and forth goes for a bit but is interrupted by Wally

"You two seem to be getting along, I take it hanging out yesterday wouldn't have anything to do with that?" Wally seemed friendly but it seemed like he was always acting sneaky.

"I-" before you can speak Jenna says a few words.

"Oh yeah, I totally beat him racing, but it was a lot of fun, I'm looking forward to next time!" Jenna says, looking at you.

"Yeah, maybe I'll beat her the next try." you say.

"Well, I'm just glad everyone's getting along." Wally says innocently, the other two cooks arrive from behind him.

"Alright John, it's on the decline so you should be good to go." Nick says.

"Sounds good, who's the manager at the moment?" you ask

"You have a good on John" Says Nick, the other two nod in unison.

"You too, good working with you guys." you clock out and head into the breakroom, it was a nice couple hours. Jenna enters the room.

"So... I'm not very good at this." Jenna says quietly.

"What?" You ask almost feeling like bad news is coming,

A long pause is held over the room a bit, Jenna seems to be getting more nervous. you give a smile, "Sure, that sounds nice actually..." You squint at her a little. "How do you feel about guns?" She looks a bit surprised.

"Well, I haven't really fired one but they look interesting." Jenna admits.

"Well, I got some handguns and some ammo, how about we do a little target shooting?" You inquire, hoping she'd say yes.

"That sounds like fun, let's do it." Jenna replies gleefully.

"Awesome well, we got a couple more shifts 'til the weekend but I'm looking forward to it" you stand up and grab your hoodie. "Text me later, kay?"

"Yeah will do." Jenna replies beaming. You walk out the room and give Jenna a wave, you wave off the cook staff and exit the back of the building, you have the rest of the day to yourself, time to relax.

((And that's all for tonight, thank you all for participating, The writing this chapter was shorter than usual due to external stressors but I'm getting back into the groove of things, have a good night everyone.))

Admittedly new job kicked my ass on Fridaycos' I was the only Dishwasher on that closing shift, was feeling really depressed about losing my previous job too so writing was put on the backburner. but things are coming back into swing so I'm feeling better for writing. Equipment is not what I'm used to but I'l get the hang of it, Thank you for asking.
