Another tear jerker moment was the sacrifice of Brother Meros in the novel Fear to Tread.

Where said line astartes sacrifices himself to save his primarch from becoming the Red Angel. A being of pure hatred and rage that would consume Sanguinius and turn him over to chaos.

And to top it off he tears out his own gene seed so he could continue to fight on in his legions name.

Yeah Rafen is one of his gene-descendants, has to go into some kind of meditative coma to heal himself, ends up joining his ancestor in a dream world and talking for a bit while fighting spectral enemies.

A coda afterwards shows Meros waking up in his own time and remembering some of the dream, implying that it wasn't just a memory in the geneseed but some kind of connection that transcended time, warrior to warrior.

Sadly it was only a short story. I'd really love to see some kind of 'out of time' story explored in full novel form.

Each section has a follower of a different Chaos god explain why they follow Chaos and why they do what they do. The final section is an Imperial priest who refutes all their arguments and points out how hollow their faith is. I like what it's trying to do, but it's obvious that it's being written by someone who knows about 40k and people's theories of the Lion more than from the perspective of someone in 30k.

Everyone gets annoyed when prophecies are too vague, but this one is too focused.

And also, this guy. If there's one thing, out of all the things, that Dan Abnett is good at doing, it's making you feel sad for a character. Sometimes, he'll even do a good enough job to make you love them.

The government fights a battle that destroys the planet against these robots and tears apart the library to stop them using it, only to be destroyed in the process. The library is leveled, cast into flames, every book burned and every computer virus-laden.
Then comes a man who worked there. He talks to the few surviving library workers, assembles their information, and starts rebuilding a city around the library and expanding it as the librarians find little scraps of paper and fragmented bits of files that stuck together just right read something. They rebuild a library from scrap on the ashes of the old. It isn't a shadow on the glory of the old, but it is all they have.
Then the city turns on itself, kills its master, and the librarians turn to rage. Half of them kill the other half and destroy the remnants of the library because where they're going they won't need science. Everything burns, and the city is left to a scattered few survivors, walls open to the world, with the hungry predators circling.
The Adeptus Mechanicus is the sole surviving librarian, desperately scrabbling through the ashes of paper and splinters of hard drives for anything to help him and the city he needs to survive just a second longer.

Avitus' was the most emotional and overall the best, I'll agree, but I'd argue Thaddeus was a close second. Part of it was personal, how much I loved him as a character, but also it exemplified that someone can fall to Chaos not just through corruption, self-hatred and doubt, or even desire for power for just reasons, but because of naivety. Thaddeus was a fool blinded and twisted by lies, always eager to help and save no matter what it took.

If all of your guys remained pure, they didn't go traitor and the Techmarine would become the boss. This was to encourage replaying the game and trying out different loadouts and seeing the different roads of the story according to the player's decisions.

In Retribution, they made campaigns for all the factions instead of just Space Marines. From this point on, they decided to not tie in with previous games according to the player's saved campaign files and went back to their own firm canon where Avitus was the traitor. They treated their campaign as sequel to Chaos Rising as if Avitus had been the traitor, thus they didn't need to explain why Martellus the Techmarine was back - He'd never been traitor according to the officially declared storyline.

I disagree - Tarkus is a great character, and his fall was good, but it also felt unrealistic. He was corrupted, but he didn't change, and he only fell because he was trying too hard to be good. It's honestly hard to tell that he's actually corrupted until the very last moment when he's screaming that his weapon has abandoned him. I feel he's the one that's most obviously not supposed to have fallen, the absolute best of them.

Thaddeus was a whiny bastard, but that's part of what made his fall better. He went through roughly the same sort of corruption as Tarkus - he believed that the power of something else was necessary for his goals, and his goals were to save his friends and help his chapter survive and thrive. It feels believable that his own naivety and self-importance would draw him into the trap of Chaos, especially compared to Tarkus and his accursed bolter, and it's far more obvious that he's been corrupted when he goes back on things he's said and goes from whispering to screaming. The poor guy had the horrible fate of being useless compared to the other characters in the game too.

Nope nope nope. Fire Hawks gor fucked over in the Badab War and a subsequent warp storm. They were the Legion of the Damned before but now GW can't choose between a bunch of slowly dying marines or the Imperial equivalent of daemons protecting humanity.

To me they're a bunch of both. Based on the fire hawks but then with "daemonic" powers and based in the warp.

From my OW campaign, where we're playing a Death Korps regiment. This was after losing a good portion of our regiment in a final battle to take an Imperial world back from Orks, when speaking to one of the few civilians that actually wasn't terrified of us.

As far as I know, the Flame Falcons were killed off by the Inquisition, with one still serving as a Blackshield in a Deathwatch short story.

Not really as heartwaming/heartwrenching as the other examples in this thread. But I liked this one a lot since it actually shows the Tau's ideals in practice rather than just stating how they are the nicest guys in 40k.

I was raised Lutheran, but ended up going atheist and didn't go to church for several years. The time that I went to a Christmas service with my family felt terrifying - everyone singing a hymn together with a bunch of flickering candles felt a lot creepier, especially since I felt I didn't belong. And then at the Easter sevice with my grandmother's church, they went to the back, lit a fire while chanting in latin, scattered water around everywhere...
