You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you finalized your plans for Pandora's canine companion, deciding on a medium-sized furry dog of average intelligence. Afterward you had a chat with the new AI about what was bothering it, discovering that it lacks any real empathy or interests beyond it's immediate needs; to escape what it deemed a "prison" in the shape of a small computer. You decided to grant it's wish, albeit somewhat restricted, and asked the R&D team to create a small body for it to move around in. Afterward you decided to have some more quality with Pandora, more hugs abound.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

You sit with Pandora folded up in your arms, quietly reading and doing various puzzles in her book, occasionally praising her for a job well done in solving a particularly difficult one. The small android smiles wide each time, greatly enjoying this quality time with you. While you don't have any children of your own, you imagine this might be what it's like. You hope, anyway. You've heard some horror stories from a few friends with kids.

An hour or so passes and you notice Pandora starting to lose interest, a fact you can't deny, as you've been losing interest for a bit yourself. It's getting a little later in the evening, but nothing too late, especially with Pandora's enhanced battery keeping her up and moving.

You've had enough puzzles for now and decide to test Pandora's artistic skills. In fact, you figure joining her couldn't hurt either. You retrieve some paper and art supplies, pencils, markers, crayons etc., and a picture book of wildlife for references. You and Pandora spend a while drawing the various animals, your numerous advanced degrees really coming to light as you draw mildly squiggly whiskers on a tiger with what appears to have baguettes for legs. Still, it could've been worse. Pandora certainly does a better job than you, however, as you could at least tell the difference between her animals. All together you have a sizable little zoo half-filled with poorly-made abominations, which Pandora gathers together without really commenting on your drawings. You can't help but feel a slight twinge of shame because of this.

After using pen to waste paper, you feel a bit sleepy, the clock reading around 9PM. You think back to all the numerous all-nighters you used to pull when you were in college and curse youth for eluding you already. You decide now's a good enough time to get some shut-eye. Tomorrow is an important day, if you recall correctly.

Despite her protests, you manage to convince Pandora it's time for bed, helping her into her charging cradle after a final hug.

"Goodnight, Pandora." you tell her softly, hooking her into the cradle.
"Goodnight, doctor..." Pandora replies as she fades into her sleep mode, her body gradually going limp.

You head off to your room, setting your alarm as you climb into bed, excitement dancing through your mind for tomorrow. You wonder if the Facility has any champagne on hand.

As you awaken, you notice two things: One, you have a message from R&D letting you know the new body is ready.
Two, you have an alert from Pandora's readout. It could be anything from the most minor to the most severe. You really need to upgrade this software sometime.

You throw on some clothes and hurry off to Pandora's room post haste, quickly swiping your ID and dashing through the door. Strangely enough, Pandora isn't in the main room today. You're a little worried now. You check her charging room and find her still hooked up, still in sleep mode. Nothing seems to be outwardly broken or out of order, she's just not waking up.

You try to manually take her out of sleep mode to no avail. She will not wake up. You're starting to panic a little now. You hook your laptop, which thankfully you bring with you out of habit now, up to Pandora and get to work on running a diagnostic.

You run through her software, checking line after line of code, as well as every program you can find. Eventually you find the problem; her wake-up program backfired somehow and was caught in some kind of "not ready to wake up" loop, keeping her from actually being able to exit sleep mode. You guess it might still have some bugs to work out. Strange.

After a short while you manage to get it all squared and back to normal, allowing Pandora to awaken once again, only to have her sit up with a start, letting out a quick shout of fear, followed by grabbing onto you tightly once she realizes you're in the room with her.

"Bad Man was back again..." she mumbles from the safety of your chest "and this time he caught me. Wouldn't let me go. Said he'd never leave. Said he wouldn't let me leave either..." You're worried all over again, now.

You send a message to your team telling them to wake up and smell the science, giving them orders to immediately head to Pandora's room. While you're sure half of them were still asleep when you sent it, you're met with a string of confirmations that they're on the way. You use the 10 or so minutes it takes for them to arrive to hug Pandora and have her explain in detail what the Bad Man wanted, exactly. She isn't quite sure what to make of the whole thing, as all he would ever say is that he wouldn't let her escape and that she could never be rid of him. Not until he'd made her hurt. The elaboration only makes you worry more.

Once your team arrives and you let them in, they all gather around the table, you sitting next to Pandora as you bring up the data you have; the bad dreams, the vivid threats, the wake-up error. You tell them the last time this happened there was some...corrupt sectors in her systems. You decide to leave out the eventual discovery of another AI for the moment. The team goes over some notes and you all come to the conclusion that something this tenacious can be dealt with one of two ways: A. Attempt to clean it up again, then set her scheduled defrag/system clean to be more thorough at the cost of slowing her charging cycle, or B. Attempt a total purge of the sector it's residing in, which is a more "scorched earth" method that may cause Pandora to lose some data, and thus memories.
What should you do?

The schedule is easy enough to update, only requiring a quick tweaking of some settings here and there. Pandora is still a little unsettled by it all, but you do your best to keep her calm throughout it all. Unfortunately, you won't know if it worked until her next sleep cycle.

With that out of the way, you thank your researchers for their assistance and to keep looking into the data they have to see if they have any way to prevent it from happening in the future. Hopefully you won't have need of it, but better safe than sorry.

In the meantime, you have another choice to make.

That is terrifying. Why do you do this to poor Pandora?
>>
"So," you begin, hoping to move past the stress and onto something better "you want to go to R&D and see everybody? We have a surprise for you if you're up for it." You give your best awkward smile, hoping the promise of presents is enough to cheer her up.

"Okay." she says timidly, slowly coming around. She stands up and tightly grips your arm, refusing to let go, making it a little tricky to send a message to security letting them know you're traveling with Pandora.

You take a quick stroll over to R&D after letting them know you're on the way, a few people stopping to stare and the occasional wave. You think a few more strolls like this might be good for Pandora, help her get used to seeing other people and meeting new friends should security allow it. As you arrive, swiping your card over the reader, the door lurches open to reveal Mouse, greeting Pandora with a hug and a cheer, giving her a look over to make sure everything's in order. You can't help but see her as some kind of doting aunt the way she fusses over her at times.

"S'right in here," Mouse says, leading you both to the back room "Pandora, cover your eyes for your surprise!" Pandora complies, not sure why she should be doing this.

As you enter the room, you see the whole team standing beside Pandora's new body, the body itself nearly identical save for several differences; the height is, while not considerably different, noticeable enough. Secondly, you notice it has a bit more...femininity to it? Nothing extreme, but a little more female than Pandora's purely androgynous body as is. Actual curves as opposed to the completely neutral look it has now. An interesting touch, to be sure. You hope Pandora likes it.

"Alright, sweetheart," Mouse begins, excitement dripping from her voice "open 'em!"

Pandora removes her hands from her eyes and her mouth is agape. A few seconds of stunned silence until she hurries over to it to touch every bit of it she can, looking it up and down, ecstatic.

"Is this..." Pandora begins, holding the new body's hand in hers "Is this mine? Is this my new body?"

"Hell yeah it is," Mouse replies proudly "the new improved you is all ready."

"It's so...I want to..." Pandora stammers, looking from it to Mouse and back, then finally back to you "Doctor, can I put it on now?! I can't wait! I want to try it!"

"Absolutely." you say, beaming with happiness at her reaction, giving a quick, stealthy thumbs up to the team on their work. All you need now is to set it up and swap out her old body for the new. Shouldn't be too lengthy.

You help Pandora onto the workbench, her excited bouncing making it a little tricky to get her situated, but you manage. You give her one last hug in this body before switching her off and getting to work. For the most part it's essentially switching the housing of her hard drive and a few other essentials, but still delicate work to be sure. A slight slip up here could end up badly for poor Pandora.

Thankfully, though, it goes off without a hitch, the transfer going smoothly and quickly. All it takes is a few minutes to power to cycle, then you switch her back on, fingers crossed that everything works out.

As her eyes open and the lights within begin to glow a soft blue, she takes a slow look around before landing on you, a smile working it's way across her face.

"Did it work?" Pandora asks, looking at her new body "Am I in my new body?"

"See for yourself." one of the Bobs speaks, holding a mirror up to give her a good look at herself. She practically screams with delight, standing up quickly and turning around before noticing another new thing; her hair has begun flashing a bright yellow, possibly in reaction to her excitement.

"My hair!" Pandora says, running her fingers through it "It changes color! I can change my hair!" she begins rapidly switching colors, from yellow to blue, green, red, orange, pink and back to white. A tight embrace lets you know she's pretty happy with this. It also lets you know she is considerably heavier and harder to the touch.

"Glad you like it, darlin'." Mouse ruffles her hair a bit as it flashes from green to purple repeatedly. "Be sure to thank the doc, eh?"

Pandora nods. "Thank you, doctor! I like it a lot!"

"You're very welcome, Pandora." you respond, giving the hair ruffle a try yourself. It certainly feels different from normal hair, but not unpleasant. "We have more things on the way for you soon, so I hope you're ready for some big surprises." Her eyes widen and her smile brightens. Safe to say that's a yes.
