About four years ago, my mother's car got attacked by some kind of superpowered freak. It put my mother in a coma for a good while, and she's been hospitalized ever since.

Now you'd THINK that the cops would be interested in pursuing someone who would and CAN punch cars into oblivion, but pretty everyone I told about what happened laughed in my face.

The only person who actually DID believe me is a girl I met in the park the night after the accident... and thanks to her, now I have my own powers.

The hunt for that book that Lorelei told me about actually seems to be going somewhere, as I've managed to find the names of the two kids who attacked me and Irene the other day. After giving said names to Irene, she used her evil organization connections to get their address too!

And now it looks like we've just run into one of them.

At least I HOPE it's only one of them.

Though it's a fair ways off, I do hear the familiar heartbeat of that little punk who I beat up the other day. Fortunately, said heartbeat isn't accompanied with the sound of the ground rumbling so I don't think he's caught on to us just yet.

"How far away is he?" Irene asks, not moving her eyes from the direction that I pointed. "And which one is it? Divine Breath's got an average Synapse range but if it's the other kid we're dealing with..."
"It is," I reply.
"Great," she mutters under her breath. "That one's range is more than two kilometers..."
"Eh?"

Irene lets out a small chuckle.

"Around a mile and a half," she says.
"Oh," I nod.

That more or less matches with his distance, I guess. So assuming that we're outside his range, that means that we're JUST outside it. At least he doesn't seem to be in an area with any other people in it.

Those girls acted as they did because they're spoiled little girls and spoiled little girls tend to be absolute shits. The older jerk nobles tend to be more passive-aggressive than actively antagonistic.

Nope, neither party is particularly interested in revisiting that.

They've made an artform of it. Gang beatings on little kids followed by making them actyally eat dogshit, the horrible things that people read in their Japanese porno mangas, all that shit.
The authorities are notoriously bad at sorting things out and suicide isn't at all uncommon when it gets really bad.

I take a calming breath and start walking towards my unseen opponent.

"Wha-" Irene reaches out to me. "What are you doing!?" she whisper-shouts.
"Acting like I don't know anyone's there," I reply. "C'mon."
"........." She hits me with a concerned look, but soon hurries after me.

Block after block, we draw closer to that little dickhead kid who was so brazen as to pick a superpowered fight with a total stranger in the middle of the freaking street. And while I focus on canceling out the impact of my footsteps hitting the ground, the voice in my head listens out for his heartbeat.

he's moving

seems like he's pacing

think he's listening to music too

really bad music

Figures.

"And here we are..." I mumble to myself when my own Synapse headache kicks in. "Be careful."
"You don't have to worry about me," Irene replies, both the tone of her voice and her heartbeat reaffirming her level of confidence.

but she got knocked out before

don't let her get in over her head

Didn't he duel Karel once, or was that right before he fought Monique? Though there wasn't really much time for sparring after the duel.
Throughout the quest Reinhold was constantly looking to improve himself, and I don't think he is the sort of person who would ever settle for staying at the level he's currently at. He'd want to push himself further and further.

Closing the remaining distance, I walk alongside Irene as we go. But much to her dismay, our path leads into block populated by buildings that really should have been torn down years ago.

"Let's go in," Irene says in an octave barely above a whisper.

After I nod to her in acknowledgment, Irene takes point as we head into the dilapidated building. Though my steps continue to be muffled, every one she takes reverberates through the entire structure...

We've got an entire wall that's on the verge of crumbling along with the floor adjacent to it, and a good deal of the bricks on the outside are one strong windstorm away from just falling off... man this place is a deathtrap

I can hear that little punk laughing to himself upstairs, he probably thinks that we're scared out of our minds right now.

"Irene," I say. "How strong are you?"
"Huh?" she furrows her brow.
"I'd like a boost but if you can't then that's fine," I say. "I can figure something else out."
"Oh, that's all?" she smirks. "I can toss you around no problem."
"Great," I nod.

That kid's up there and a little ways to the left so if I hit those boards there...

"Toss me up right here so I can reach the ceiling," I say while pointing at the area I have in mind, "and then back away. We need to hurry though before he decides to move or try and kill us again."
"Umm, sure?"

>[1/?]

"Hahaha, they're scared stiff!" the little piece of garbage laughs to himself. "I bet they pissed themselves!"

Yeah, screw this guy.

Carefully, Irene walks over to a safe spot on the floor and locks her fingers together.

"Ready when you are," she says.
"Got it," I reply.

Running start...

...step on her hands...

...and it takes all of my self-control not to yell out as I fins myself propelled into the air FAR faster than I was expecting. Irene definitely wasn't lying when she said she was strong.

But now's not the time to be focusing on that stuff, I have more important matters to attend to. Focusing my concentration on the vibration frequency of the ceiling above me, I jut my arm upwards and punch it right at the apex of my jump. Yeah a little tap would've worked just as well, but it's more fun this way.

As I come to a gentle landing (thanks to negating the shock), I look upwards and can't help but grin like mad. With a little help from my Branch, the shockwaves made by the impact of my fist have spread throughout the structure while also having been altered to a certain frequency...

...and then the entire section of ceiling comes crashing down. Along with the person who it was supporting.

I leap back towards Irene as gravity continues to do its part in helping along my little plan. I make it to her side just as-

RULES TIME.

There are three types of attacks:

>Strike
>Strikes are fast, precision based attacks. Any attack which seems like it may rely on overwhelming speed or pinpoint accuracy is likely a Strike. As a general rule of thumb, most mundane small arms fire is considered a Strike. Strikes defeat Crashes, but are defeated by Guards.

>Crash
>A Crash is a highly telegraphed, but extremely powerful blow. Any attack which seems to rely mostly on the brute strength or overwhelming force is likely a Crash. As a general rule of thumb, most thrown objects, like trees or boulders, are considered Crashes. Crashes defeat Guards, but are defeated by Strikes.

>Guard
>A Guard is a defensive posture or evasive stance which is used to set up a counter-blow. Any attack which appears as if it could be a feint, focuses on counterattacks, or which seems to be a stalling tactic is likely to be a Guard. Guards defeat Strikes, but are defeated by Crashes.

While Eric continues to scream profanities at the top of his lungs, I can't help but notice that the ceiling above him is starting to peel away starting with the parts around the hole that he fell through. Tearing off like paper, it floats around him kind of like what you get when you peel an apple while leaving the skin all in one piece. Except, you know, this stuff is cement and plaster and bricks instead.

"This is new..." Irene says, laughing uneasily while tugging at my sleeve for me to get some distance between us and this... whatever the hell he's doing.

don't look at me

"If you know my name then you probably already found out where I live," Eric growls while his repurposed ceiling begins to smooth out. "so if I don't kill you now and make all this disappear then you're gonna follow me home and then my stupid brother'll kick my ass..."

But the oncoming attack doesn't wait for us to finish our exchange, its two lead strands rapidly encroaching on my territory. In anticipation of their impact, I steady my feet, draw back my gloved fists and take a deep breath.

"Nnngh..." those arms slide from around me and prop a person's worth of weight from off my back. "You're not hurt, are you?"
"No," I hack out some of the dust that I'd inhaled. "Just banged up a little."
"That's good," she laughs weakly. "I thought I asked you to be careful..."

Grimacing in pain, Irene props herself back to her feet and then pulls me back up myself.

"That wasn't a web," Irene says, pointing in the direction of the no-destroyed attack, "it was like... I dunno, a continuous attack. When you destroyed the part you hit, the rest kept going along in its place."
"And since it was mixed, the resonance frequency wasn't the same to pulverize it," I mutter to myself.
"I guess," she nods.

While Irene peers ahead through the settling dust, I catch a quick glance at her back.

"Oh God!" I call out. "Irene, your-"

He seemed to have poor perception skills and a lot of confidence. Probably won’t expect and attack right now. Perhaps we might trick him into thinking we haven’t moved by manipulating some concrete at the current place?

We could also probably end this by convincing him that he is already on an international list and will be visited by a friendly assassination squad if he continues to act up. Tailored to counter him and his brother because international entities do have enough people to choose from.

Yup, since before the dawn of recorded history.

>Does that mean that famous historical figures might have been branch holders?
Also yup.

>>43517013
>Q: Were those books invented or are they a branch thing that naturally occurred at some point?
They are a manmade thing created through a very specific process that was just figured out within the past year in-game. Maybe three people know how they were made, and even fewer are actually able to create them.

I send a few tracking pulses through the air and floor to check where everything is. And sure enough, Eric is still standing in the same place that he fell... though I do notice that there's something floating around him.

Figure out the resonance of whatever that is, okay?

aye aye

"C'mon," I say to Irene while pointing down the hallway. Let's rush him before he can do that again.

Putting my Branch to work doubletime, I negate the impact of both mine and Irene's footsteps as we race towards the other side of the room. She's already hurt as it is, I'm not about to let her fall through the floor or anything stupid like that.

The dust cloud thins as we approach, bringing both our quarry and his... floating rocks into view. He's got a bunch of pieces around the size and length of my arm floating around him in some kind of defensive stance...

"Whoa!" I blurt out, narrowly avoiding a sudden projectile that would have went right through my chest. "Watch out, Irene!"
"Oka-"

I hear a loud slapping sound and then muffled cries.

As she desperately struggles to tear it free of her face, I notice that it's covering both her nostrils and her mouth... he's trying to suffocate her!

"I'll be right th-"

My approach is blocked off by five of Eric's floating rocks that shoot out in my path. Every time I try to get close to her to break off those stupid rocks, they fire out like bullets and it's all I can do to avoid them.

I flinch as I see Irene's jaw slip free of the bottom of her makeshift muzzle, revealing a row of teeth that may as well be knives. Stretching out further than should be possible for a human's jaw to go, it reaches over the stone and snaps shut. I don't know what the hell her teeth are made of, but they crunch through the cement with ease, freeing her from the danger of suffocation.

"You gonna give up now?" I ask. "I've already kicked your ass once and you should be able to tell by now that the same thing's about to happen again."

Aw shit.

Those words - "not even a weed", weed, vine, etc.
They refer to how thoroughly the altpersonality has taken over the body. Overgrowth being when the altpersonality just brute forces its way in.

Yeah, you're right.

Pushing my impact-canceling skills to their absolute limit, I dart along the sections of the floor that haven't already crumbled and close the distance between myself and Eric. Leaping as far as I can with each step seems to be the key to not outrunning the collapse, and I soon find myself within arm's reach of my enemy...

"Guh-"

Eric snaps out of his tantrum just long enough to notice my fist zooming right into his face. With a satisfying crunching sensation, my punch slams through the hard cartilage of his nose and into his skull proper, filling his head with a cacophony of soundwaves.

infinite vertigo

They wreak havoc with the fluid in Eric's middle ear, completely ruining his balance and sending him doubling over into the fetal position... but just like his balance is destroyed, so continues the floor. And the ceiling. And everything.

"........."

Her heartbeat's steady.

I hate prioritizing the life of someone who JUST got done trying to kill me over someone who's saved my ass once today and has been nothing but nice to be despite her questionable affiliation... but it wouldn't be right to just leave this little turd to die in the building collapse that he caused. And so, I give Irene one last nod of understand before slinging Eric over my shoulder and leaping out the nearest window. The impact boost from my leap gives me enough distance to clear the building entirely, and the impact cancel on my landing works just as smoothly.

Once I'm pretty sure I'm out of risk of anything falling on me, I dump Eric into the ground (with a most satisfying thud) and turn to face the place that I just escaped... seconds before the entire thing comes crumbling to the ground.

Watching this makes me feel kind of queasy.

"Irene!" I call out, amplifying my voice several times over. "Irene, are you okay!?"

No answer.

A nauseous feeling wells up in my stomach as I race over to the rubble before the dust's even finished clearing in hopes of confirming that she's alright.

really weak

"Shit!"

I race over to where the voice in my head specified only to find more wreckage. But the heartbeat's coming from right here so she must be underneath... dammit, I can't even remember the last time I felt this horrible.

faint heartbeat

"Shit!" I exclaim when I notice some kind of resistance while trying to pull IRene free of the wreckage. It sounds like some kind of rebar...

oh god it's piercing through her leg

Much to my regret, the voice in my head is proven right when I clear free the debris around her legs and find that her thigh's been run clean through.

"Shit..." I grimace as I look at the full extent of the damage. There's blood like EVERYWHERE and I don't even...
"Agh-" her entire body convulses at once and even more blood gushes from her mouth like a fountain.
"C'mon, hang in there!" I call out. "Irene!"

It's like a thousand pound weight is lifted from my soul when I see her eyes open up.

The sharp pain of a Synapse is what finally ends my wailing. With caution slowly taking the place of sadness in my mind, I rise back to my feet and listen out for what's coming.

Police sirens in the distance, they probably won't reach this place for another ten minutes. Pedestrians, they'll take even longer. Some birds overhead, and another car... it's closer than the cops are and a heartbeat that I recognize is inside.

Lloyd. I'm not looking forward to telling him what happened at all, but I owe Irene at least that much. That and making sure that the piece of shit that did that to her is properly taken care of. Or disposed of, I don't know how their organization handles situations like this.

The car increases speed as it gets closer, reaching us about a minute after the Synapse alerted me to its presence. Lloyd leaps out once it comes to a stop, racing towards the rubble where Irene's corpse and myself are.

"THAT," I point to the still-unconscious Eric, "collapsed this building with Irene still inside."

"If you'd have just killed him then I would've been able to pass it off as an 'accident' or somesuch," Lloyd grumbles. "and it's not like I can do it myself, I don't carry a weapon and my Branch is strictly for payback..."

he's right

"!!!!!"

An impossibly strong gust of wind comes at the same time that both of us get a Synapse.

Hey it's Windy weedman.

Let's fuck him up
>>

uh oh

"I don't carry a weapon" he says in a field of debris…

And windy guy is at it again.

The gale is so strong that it's all that either of us can do just to remain standing as it continues to blow into us... and when it finally subsides, the elder Buccelli brother is standing by Eric's unconscious frame.

"Well damn," Marshall says with an annoyed groan. "I told him not to pick any more fights and then he goes and blows a building up..."
"Freeze right where you are!" Lloyd screams while pointing at him. "Step away from that boy!"
"Sorry, but I'm not the kind of person who'd let his little brother continue to nap in the middle of the sidewalk."

he doesn't care

"Sorry for any trouble that my brother's caused though," Marshall says, picking the little boy up like a sack of potatoes. "I'll be sure to let him have it later."
"That boy KILLED my partner!" Lloyd screams. "That goes FAR beyond a simple childhood indiscretion!"
"Wow, really?" he grimaces. "Sorry to hear that, man. But these things happen, you know?"

…So killing people is something normal for him? What sort of life do they live?

Actually, let’s just forcefully recruit them or kill them.

"'These things happen!?'"

Lloyd reaches into the rubble and picks up a baseball bat-sized piece of rebar.

"Listen here you little shit," he snarls, "drop the kid and stand down or I'llWHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

I stand there stunned as a small tornado forms underneath his feet and launches him into the air.

"I'm gonna leave now, -classmate-," Marshall says to me with a wide grin. "You can try and chase after me if you want, but then your friend'll likely end up going splat."

With a casual wave goodbye, he floats into the air and begins to fly off.

Lloyd shares pain right?

He'll turn Marshall into a pancake.

Tough decision… How high up is Lloyd?

If he lands on his neck he's probably dead.
Also they have the element brothers' address.

Lloyd shares the pain, but there's not much to share if he's dead.
>>
>writing
>>
>>43518617
He doesn’t share pain, he transfers injuries. As long as he survives for a few seconds he’s alright.

He’ll probably survive a 4m drop (probably even trained stuff like that because of his branch), but that get’s harder with increased height.

So… how high up was that guy? I didn’t vote because you didn’t answer.

About 4-5 stories.

I hate this captcha so fucking much
>>
Seeing Joshua and Divine Breath dude use their elements makes me feel bad for CC. They seem way more versatile.
>>
As much as I hate the idea of letting a murderer get away, I hate the idea of letting someone else die for nothing even more. So while the shithead brothers fly away, I find myself trying desperately to position myself underneath Lloyd's body as he falls...

Back... further back... watch out for the curb...

WHUMP

While I did take care of the impact, it's still kind of a lot to try and support fully grown man in my arms for more than a few seconds at a time. As such, his return to the ground is far from graceful.

"Shit..." I peer off into the distance yet find that they're out of sight already. "
"Of all the fucking luck," Lloyd growls as he gets back on his feet. "At least they didn't end up killing me too so I thank you for that."
"I didn't want two deaths on my conscience," I reply while glancing in the general direction of Irene's corpse.
"Yeah well I still owe you one," he sighs.

As the cops finally arrive, Lloyd has me hide out in his car. Apparently his organization's got some ties to the police so he's able to explain off this situation without giving me away... not that I really care about much of anything right now. My hands are covered in blood and I can't get the image of Irene's face as she lay there dying or her slowing heartbeat out of my head and it feels like I'm about to go insane from the weight of it all.
>>
>>43518769
Cc is just as versatile, she lacks 2 things, stamina and imagination.
>>
At long last, this thread comes to an end with trauma and depression. This was a long one and there were some lulls around the middle but I thank everyone who participated and hope you liked it.

The Cecile will return on Sunday night, assuming that I can work up the drive to write y then.

and now questions
>>
>>43518789
That and a lot of practice. Joshua's been doing this for four years, CC a couple months.
>>
>>43518812
CC's parents, hypothetically what their branches would be?
>>
>>43518822
Wind guy has the same inexperience, but he has stamina and is obviously fairly bright, despite being a dick. Earth guy too.

>The second was the fault of Irene’s self-destruction tendencies. Girl has issues.
Irene doesn't have self-destructive tendencies. She has self-sacrificing tendencies that are perfectly natural when you've got god knows how many bodies and can grow new ones practically at will.

Her only mistake is not telling her partners, since they're inevitably going to find out in a horribly traumatic way.

Shyamalan 3rd act twist: they were branch users ALL ALONG.
>>

>They seem way more versatile.
It’s ok. CC can do some pretty neat stuff herself. As the other one mentioned she mostly lacks stamina to truly get gud.

>>43518784
Now is the time to think about the mysterious “I’m going to be alright” or what she said. (Why isn’t she just calling one of our phones btw? Waiting to be sure that the fight is over?)

>>43518812
Too bad anons were stupid for that first fight vote. I still don’t get how that happened, I don’t remember ever seeing a more obvious crush in your quests.

Questions:
>Why was Lloyd so far away?
>What sort of fucked up life did Concreto and Windbag have to turn into such sort-sighted murderific assholes?
>What should I feed my two turtles today? (Thinking about dry reptile-food and water, but that’s just boring)
>>
>>43518833
Naw, it would be self-sacrifice if she was accomplishing something by doing it. She seems to be pretty much into maximum suffering even if there are better options instead.
>>
>>43518812
If Joshua got with Irene and Cecile was not on Irene's route, will Joshua be introduced as Irene's boyfriend when he joins main quest?
>>
>>43517961
>Q. Turtle, if Irene gets one of her teeth knocked out in a fight and the tooth lands in soil, can it grow a new Irene?
As long as said tooth wasn't cracked, yes.

>>The second was the fault of Irene’s self-destruction tendencies. Girl has issues.
>Irene doesn't have self-destructive tendencies. She has self-sacrificing tendencies that are perfectly natural when you've got god knows how many bodies and can grow new ones practically at will.
She wouldn't be half as casual about dying horribly if she didn't thoroughly hate herself as much as she does.

>Her only mistake is not telling her partners, since they're inevitably going to find out in a horribly traumatic way.
This is entirely true though.

>>43518823

'Tis a mystery.

>>Why was Lloyd so far away?

>>What sort of fucked up life did Concreto and Windbag have to turn into such sort-sighted murderific assholes?
Marshall's an edgelord who's spent most of his idle thoughts on what he'd do upon obtaining Real Ultimate Power. His brother's just a little shit who likes hurting things and is decidedly less creative with his power usage.

>>What should I feed my two turtles today? (Thinking about dry reptile-food and water, but that’s just boring)
A strawberry?

>>43518894
>If Joshua got with Irene and Cecile was not on Irene's route, will Joshua be introduced as Irene's boyfriend when he joins main quest?
That was the idea, yeah.
assuming that Irene was around at said point of the story, of course

And now I finally go to sleep. Thanks for playing!

Exchanging the car that they'd rented for one that wasn't broken down.

Does Joshua hooking up with Lorelei mean she's going to show up in the main quest too at some point? I can't even imagine how much having her around would mess things up.

As in a single one? Do you want them to starve!? Sorry, currently no strawberries in the house.
