Previously on Exterminator Quest:

Today you succumbed to infidelity with a GEC executive, found out her husband was a serial killer, and rescued your sonfu (again) from a vet’s office overrun with giant overprotective Mantises. You burned down the vet’s office to dispose of the evidence and prevent the spread of Jeremy’s infection but had to subject your van to decontamination protocols afterward.

Despite GEC’s generous taxi voucher, you opted to cool down and reminisce about the recently departed Zheng at the pub near GEC HQ. You accidentally pissed off most of the patrons while experimenting with your new (illegal) smart phone but you also met a trio of brightly jacketed Brits who you decided to make a bet with.

The Wager:

You put down $4,000 that said you could beat any of these three gear heads in a race. Your terms where that you pick the place. In return you let them pick your vehicle.

The Car:

>An antique Toyota Elevon from 2020. A 17 year old car that still runs on gasoline. Unknown modifications.

The Place:

>Mount Tai Mo Shan, the second tallest peak in China.

If you win:

>You get your pick of the loser’s cars.
>>
Now there’s a sound you haven’t heard in a long time. The engine in the Toyota Elevon rumbles to life as you turn the key in the ignition and a custom display scheme lights up the dash, bathing your bare forearms in a dull red.
The boys were good to you: they let you have your drink and sober up too.

>[Nerves: 11/13]

Maybe the youth is alright, maybe they felt like they were already taking advantage of you; driving manual with a gas engine is something you haven’t done in years, let alone racing with one. But you quash your anxiety and pull out into the street behind Luca’s streamlined monstrosity. The three Brits have customized their cars past the point of you being able to easily identify the models, though you’re virtually certain that Lucas is driving some kind of exotic SAN import. Derek and Brody’s cars are low-key by comparison, though their colorful mods make that statement very relative.

The three of you drive in single file towards Mount Tai Mo Shan and others quickly emerge from the side streets to enlist in the queue behind you. The word has gone out apparently.

The caravan grows and grows until it must be at least 17 cars long. Ahead of you, Lucas pulls up alongside Brody as they approach a traffic signal. The light flashes yellow just as the two of them reach the intersection and that seems to be the starting gun. Wheels screech as they take off on an informal race towards the Tunnel.

You and Derek are pulling up to the light now; you could easily take position alongside his flattened pickup if you wanted to race…

You pull out of the column and move up beside Derek, who’s heading the group in his mate’s absence. There’s a slight whirring as his tinted window lowers and he looks over at you with smug disbelief. He nods and points at the road ahead of you, as though uncertain of your intentions.

Your only response: pushing down hard on the gas pedal to rev the engine. Derek’s truck cannot respond in the ancient tongue and he is reduced to shrugging and rolling his window back up. You continue to rev the engine, trying to generate as much torque as possible.

The light turns green and the dance begins:

The Toyota Elevon is a small car with a big engine, hurling you backwards into the seat from the very start. You shift gears like you used to back in America, climbing higher and higher. Just when it seems like you’ve hit the sweet spot for taking off in this car, you realize Derek’s truck is already far ahead of you.
For all your footwork, the antiquated heart of the Elevon simply can’t muster the same torque as a modern electric, especially one that seems to have had all the safety restrictions on rapid acceleration stripped off like the truck’s.
Still, even as Derek weaves through traffic on his way to the tunnel you remind yourself that this isn’t over yet. You pour gas into the engine like there’s no tomorrow and little flames appear in the boarder of the dash graphics. A blue light begins to blink down by the shifter and you press it without thinking.

The engine clanks frighteningly and you grit your teeth, expecting the worst. A compartment in the middle of the hood pops open and a message flashes in green across the dash.

“Superturbocharger ENGAGED”

The engine roars and suddenly you’re able to start gaining on Derek. He’s struggling with the traffic now, as it starts to pile up the closer you get to the Tunnel entrance. As he tries to navigate through an increasingly dense obstacle course, you decide to emulate a much younger and stupider Vince by swerving into oncoming traffic.
Automated vehicles swerve to avoid you, their drivers screaming and covering their eyes. You push them all to the side and throttle past your would-be rival to the entrance of the entrance to the ShaTin Tunnel.

Your phone dings as you skip the tolls, forgetting that you’re not in your Van. A feminine voice reassures you however:

“Toll neutralized.”

You’ve got no idea what that means but you’re pretty sure your new phone is turning out to be a great investment. You quickly catch sight of Lucas and Brody. Brody slows down and pulls up beside you.

“What’d you do with Derek?”

You do your best to make yourself heard in the echoing din of the tunnel.

“He got a little snarled up in traffic, that’s all. He’ll tell you all about it when he finally catches up.”

“He got snarled? Then how did you get here so fucking fast, you bloody colonial?”

You give him a knowing smile.

Derek himself catches up about 30 seconds later and Brody gives him a little impromptu interview too. You can’t hear any of it but Derek is gesticulating one-handedly out the window in a way that suggests he’s none too pleased.

He doesn’t seem to win the argument. The truck slows and pulls in behind you. The stragglers all catch up gradually as you near the bottom of Mount Tai Mo Shan. The surroundings once again become more rustic, although this time everything is cloaked under the cover of night.

You stay close to the rear of Brody’s car and Derek does the same to you. You wind your way up the mountain until Lucas finally pulls ahead and then over to the side, kicking up a cloud of dirt. Brody too, creates a little space between the two of you to prevent too much debris from being hurled at your ride.

You pull ahead before you pull in. The dirt rumbles beneath your tires and you follow Lucas and Brody along a short but well-used trail that connects to a cliffside rest-area at a higher elevation. They park at the far side, ass in and lights foward, dimmed. You do the same, pushing the Elevon to the edge of the guardrail. In your rearview mirror, you can see the yellow lights of Hong Kong.

Brody and Lucas get out of their cars and watch as the rest of the group pulls in. Brody stands apart from his car and lights a cigarette while Lucas keeps one foot inside, resting the arm of his colorful jacket across the door of his import.

Derek backs in beside you and gets out shaking his head in disbelief.

“I can’t believe you did that, I simply cannot.”

“Believe it, limey.”

“Limey?”

He seems confused. It is kind of an antiquated term you suppose.

The rest of the racers are parked in short order and a chubby asian pops out to consult with the British trio. It’s a short chat to be sure, and he’s off in no time to give the news to the rest of the group. 6 cars pull away and down the mountain.

Brody, his cigarette still alight, approaches you.

“We’ll race last, you and I. There’ll be 5 races ahead of us and the losers have to be new spotters. So by the time they’re done, the route will stretch all the way down the mountain. In the meantime, cool your heels.”

>What? Let’s race right now.
>I’d rather race Lucas
>Fine, is it alright if I take a look at your ride?

“That’s fine with me. I’d like to get a better look at this new ride you’ve burdened me with anyway.”

Brody smiles.

“Prepare however you like, old man. It won’t do you any good against a Fujin-900 though.”

He pats the long, streamlined hood of his coupe. You’ve never seen the model before but the driver’s seat is pushed back far behind the engine, suggesting an intimidating level of power.

“The very last out of Japan.”

“Yeah, yeah. But how can you tell if it’s switched on or not?”

“No need to be a wise-ass, mate. A bad attitude will serve you poorly in defeat.”

With that, he strides off towards the other racers to officiate. Lucas stays put, staring at the road.

You turn your attention to your own car. Obviously, there’s more to this thing than meets the eye. Popping the hood, you get a good look at how the superturbocharger is crammed in there and it’s not pretty. It basically has to assemble itself each time you activate it and with that many moving parts, you wonder why the original owner didn’t just mount it on top of the hood. Style maybe?
The upside is, all that careful work still left enough room for them to cram 8 cylinders into this diminutive fastback. You might not have much power off the line relative to those new fangled electrics but you might be able to beat them in the long stretch with the turbo.
You enjoyed the custom manual transmission on the way here and you’re going to need it if you want to have any hope of keeping your 4k. The on-board computer was obviously upgraded too; you wonder if it has any assistive effects on your driving.
There are other goodies too; very little is stock in this car, despite it’s humble external appearance. You can only guess that it was a racer in the mid-twenties and put into a preservative retirement when electric cars achieved complete domination. You wonder why someone would willingly choose to race such a relic against a generally superior electric like Lucas’.

Two cars rip out of the rest area and onto the road before you can finish exploring that line of thought. Brody stands by the exit and directs them into their starting positions, one ahead of the other. When they’re set, he gives the head car a hand signal and it rockets off. With one eye on his watch, he gives the go ahead to the second car as well and it takes off in hot pursuit. He mouths something into the watch as they leave, presumably a heads-up for the spotters. The group of parked racers and spectators cheer as they leave and gather round an old vending machine to listen for the spotters announcements.

>take a look at brody’s car

Brody’s Fujin is a stunner. The swept-back body makes a point of showing off it’s power and Brody has accentuated this with a striking two-tone black and silver paint job. A cecal on the roof displays a terrifying god clutching a... is that a scarf?

Pfft, gay.

The tires are obviously custom, having been widened to provide more grip; it seems likely that he’s going to want to take the turns tight and on the inside.

You’re hesistant to pop the trunk but Lucas spots you from inside his own car and gives you the go-ahead nod. Inside you find a massive battery cell, which proudly displays its capacity in millions of amperes. Below it you spot two motors with elaborate cooling systems that feed into heat exhaust vents on the flanks of the car. There’s also two cords leading from the power cell to the rear of the car, suggesting that each wheel actually has its own synchronized motor. If they’re as large as the ones in the front, Brody can put a lot of power on the road, fast.

Behind you, another pair of racers spray dirt as they pull into the starting position. The spectators are shouting about something by the vending machine.

You rub the top of your head, running your fingers through continually thinning hair. This thing is basically a super car and you're skeptical that you'll be able to beat it, even in the work of retro-art that is the Elevon.

You shut the hood anyway, figuring you're too stupid to make heads or tails of how to sabotage a motor like that. Besides, your earlier victory over Derek has gotten your blood pumping for a good challenge.

Brody waves on a third pair of racers and they depart into the darkness one after another, custom neon-decals spewing rainbows into the night.

You give an informal salute to Lucas and go check out what the spectators are on about. You cut a strange profile in your GEC uniform and many of the young’uns throw silent shade at you and your middle-aged gut. You ignore it and make a point of muscling through the ones who won’t move aside for you.

In the center of the group is a skinny kid with a pierced nose and green eyebrows. He’s listening to a watch like the one Brody had; must be some ironic thing, you think. Smart watches went out of fashion years ago.

He gives short announcements to the group that you can’t really understand but find exciting nonetheless.

<Wao Ling just passed the third checkpoint and Fai Teh is right behind her! The spotter says the difference is only two-tenths of a second!>

<Down below, Li Cham and Chen Tsai are neck and neck going towards the last hairpin! The spotter says he’s watching and… Li Cham has hit the rail! She couldn’t handle the slope!>

<That last turn is the worst> comments one of the spectators.

<I heard they already had to clear a wreck from there today. Someone hit the trees!>

That sounds exactly like the turn you “lost” your tail on earlier today. Seems like you’ll be taking a similar route down the mountain again this time, which should allow you a small advantage.

Another pair of cars leave behind you. Gnats orbit over the isolated vending machine and a lone, grotesque needle fly curls its long tapering abdomen in a restful pose atop it.

Using your superior western height, you peer over the crowd and spot two racers that haven’t joined the group. A young girl is moving quickly beneath a heavily modified sedan while a goateed man stands over her, urging her to work faster in chinese. You wince when he gives her legs a swift kick.

You duck back down and pretend that you didn’t see anything, though the sight of abuse rankles you more than you might let on. Continuing to listen, you’re able to piece together more and more of the route and realize that, though it’s similar to the path you took before, it’s not identical. The race starts with a long downward incline that transitions into a long left turn ad the road wraps around the peak. From there it’s a series of three quick switchbacks, short straightaways punctuated by hairpin turns.

After all that, at around the half-way point, the road starts developing s-bends. You’re really going to struggle to keep up with Brody’s grip and power around that point. If you can somehow pull ahead, there’s a big turn at the end that you might be able to capitalize on.
From there you’ll be in the final stretch, which is a series of high-g turns culminating in what you can only assume is the one your tail crashed on.

Derek pulls his truck out of its spot and makes his way towards the starting positions, which are developing a coat of burnt rubber. The girl scrambles out from under the car behind you and her tormentor flops into the driver’s seat. Neither of them look very happy as they pull out to race Derek.

Brody lets them go first and then sends Derek after them. Then he lights another cig and walks a little in your direction.

“C’mon yank, it’s go time! I’m already thinking about how I’m going to spend your four grand!”

The green-eyebrows kid runs forward to take Brody’s place as officiator and you jog back to the Elevon. The keys are still turned in the ignition and you pull forward. The green kid beckons you onward first and you settle into the position, watching your mirror as Brody pulls up behind you.

Sweat starts beading on your forehead as you wait for the signal.

>You might not have much power off the line relative to those new fangled electrics but you might be able to beat them in the long stretch with the turbo.

>The tires are obviously custom, having been widened to provide more grip; it seems likely that he’s going to want to take the turns tight and on the inside.

You do your best to put on speed as quickly as possible, taking advantage of the downhill.

Brody plays it cautious, watching your reactions as he pulls up behind you with ease. He might still be wary of you after seeing Derek lose to you.

It doesn't deter her from pulling ahead of you in time for the turn though. You shift and drift through the long left at top speed but you barely manage to keep pace with Brody. He starts pulling away as soon as you reach the short straighaway that leads into the first switchback.

If you play your cards right here, you might be able to gain a small advantage going into the s-bends.

You pull in behind Brody as the turn approaches, taking advantage of his slipstream. He puts on more speed but you anticipate it, pushing your speedometer towards the triple digits. The dash lights up with theatrical flames and the blue indicator for the superturbocharger begins to blink.

As he moves to the right, you make your move, shifting up and to the left. Bracing your entire body, you oversteer the car into a hairpin drift that brings you neck and neck with Brody's supercar in the middle of the turn. The g-forces are crushing but you slam the button for the turbo and the doors on the roof fly open.

Pure mountain air is sucked in and compressed inside the charger, breathing incredible power into the engine as you emerge from the turn in front of Brody.

That’s enough to piss him off and he starts trying to maneuver around you on this brief straightaway. You watch the rear view mirror even as you break the triple digit barrier and continue to gain in speed, splitting your focus between block Brody’s recovery and executing a rapidly approaching turn.

Your right is a blur of sheer mountain and your left is a long drop into the trees. The road dips downward dangerously as the turn grows closer and you move towards the inside left, hoping to execute another perfect drift and land in the right lane to take the perfect positioning for the second turn. Behind you Brody shifts to the right. It looks like he wants to overpower you from the outside, which may be a real possibility in a car of that caliber. But you’ve kept him successfully behind you and thus prevented him from building on his speed advantage. It also means…

The flames on the dash go from red to blue as you accelerate over 125 MPH coming in to the sloped turn. You once again force the car into an intense drift that presses your stomach up into your chest and drops you into the right lane, cutting viciously close to the front of Brody’s car. He panics and smashes the brakes. The sound of his tires scarring the pavement grows distant almost instantly.

You take the last turn on the inside and then you’re onto the s-bends, with Brody now playing a game of catch-up.

How do you want to handle the bends?

You focus on taking the most efficient route down the serpentine road. Your headlights sweep across terraced fields, driving out flocks of creatures whose wings iridesce in the darkness. The spotters are shouting into their wrists as you cut past them in the night.

You cross lanes and anticipate where you can, though with this many curves and with this much light it's a difficult task. Slightly rattled from your earlier maneuvers, you shake it off and push yourself to try and maintain the momentum.

It works but it's not good enough to keep Brody from re-emerging as a glare in your rearview.

The finale is coming.

Brody creeps up behind you like a phantom, his car whisper quiet even at over 130 mph. It’s an amazing recovery and your palms grow sweaty as he closes the distance effortlessly, putting you back on the defensive going into a huge turn. Is it even possible to win against something so superior?

Your grip tightens and your forearms flex. Your teeth clench and your body strains. There is no tomorrow for losers.

You enter the turn with a blank mind, handing everything over to your instincts. You watch with perfect detachment as Brody pulls past you in the middle of the turn. Your reaction is that of the bug who sees the boot descending and knows he must flee.
You pull out the turn and push the gas pedal into the floor. Blue flames blossom into white as you push past 150 mph even as the road grows ever trickier to navigate. As the observable world melts into a windswept smudge, there is a dull awareness that you should be afraid tickling in the back of your brain. You strangle it.

You keep your foot anchored to the gas regardless of the obstacles in your path, using your other to operate the brake and the Elevon flies forward. The black and silver Fujin grows closer and closer until you are winding through the ultimate stages of the course directly behind it.

The Elevon does a good job of hanging tight despite its technological inferiority and you sense that the moment is coming to attempt the final pass. Brody is struggling to continue at the speeds you’re pushing him to, as fear and self-preservation begin to override his adrenaline rush. A cut on the next turn should break his spirit.

You glide into the inside lane but Brody blocks you. The road dips and rises slightly and you feel the Elevon catch a few seconds of real air time before returning roughly to earth and plunging into a steep incline. The dash says your speed is now 182, which seems incredible.

Brody’s rear quivers as he adjusts ahead of the turn and you feel it in the turbulence of the slipstream. And then it is upon you.

The struggle not to spin out is intense beyond belief, but you eventually regain control. Relief fills you and then joy as you realize you’ve pulled ahead of Brody just as the finish line is in sight. But there’s trouble in your lane; the racer with the young mechanic from earlier is just ahead and he’s smoking heavily as he limps toward the finish. You pull into Brody’s lane and the unexpected move causes him to lose control and ricochet off the guard rails. Debris hurtles past you even as you cross the finish line and begin to slow down.

The winners are gathered a little further down, parked at another rest stop. Derek and Lucas are certainly there; you didn’t see them as spotters.

For your own part, you are exhausted but the thrill of victory will sustain you temporarily. Even if things do seem to be spinning a little...

The flames on the dash quickly recede as you slow back to the speed of a mere human. The turbo vanishes discretely beneath the hood and the engine’s roar recedes to a sweet purr. You have little time to appreciate the finer things however and quickly turn around, motoring back to Brody’s crash site.

The racer in the smoking car has parked himself not far from the site as well, his hands linked behind his head and a look of horror on his face. He seems to be immobilized by shock, as Brody is screaming and cursing for him to come and help. You push past to see exactly what the problem is.

Brody’s Fujin is totaled, having bounced off the rails on both sides a half a dozen times. In the final collision, it seems to have lodged itself rear-first in a rail overlooking a steep and probably not survivable fall into a field below. As it is, the mangled wheels managed to shove themselves under the badly warped rail and the front of the car has angled upwards. There is still a very real possibility that the car could fall backwards but the way Brody is screaming suggests he has bigger concerns.

Without thinking, you clmor onto the car and reach the driver’s seat. The windows are already broken and you’re able to force the door itself open even as the car teeters slightly from the action.

[1/2]
>>
>>43438902
[2/2]

“Bloody yank… you can have the car.”

He seems pretty out of it and you understand why when you get a good look at his left leg. The shin bone has punched up and through the knee, exposing a bloody mess of torn tendons and ligaments. You blanch involuntarily.

>Nerves 2/13

You suddenly feel very detached from the whole situation, like you’re reading about your actions in a book and have no real control of this or anything.

“C’mon man! Get me out of here!”

Brody’s voice spurs you back into action. You get him free as carefully as you can but he still howls when you try to move him. You try again and he screams louder. By the third time you’ve stopped caring. You yank him out and get the two of you out of there. The car shifts abruptly without Brody’s weight and then, with a terrible groan, slides out from under the rail and slams into the field.

The other racer has already stripped off his jacket and blocked off the road with his car, which looks like it might burst into flame at any second. The two of you work together to lay Brody down, though he seems to have lost consciousness from the pain.

You tell the other racer to get help as you start bandaging Brody’s numerous lacerations. All told, this isn’t too bad… aside from the whole busted knee thing, you’ve done worse than this.

Those thoughts and the sound of an arriving ambulance are your last memories of the evening.

>END THREAD

And that's a wrap. Gonna archive and stick around for the next 30-40 or so.

>>43438551
I think your scale and my scale were proportioned differently. he had about a 25 chance of only minor lacerations, next 25 was brutal but not life threatening, 50-80 different degrees of internal damage or mutilation, 80 or higher...
