You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you enjoyed your day off by spending quality time with Pandora, taking the opportunity to ask her some questions about several subjects, including how she'd feel about having an AI sibling. As it became rather clear that she was lonely and wanted very much to have a friend, you decided to ask Gen. Richards about getting her a pet drone. He agreed, but only so long as you reconsidered the proposal to create an AI dedicated to military applications.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

Sup AMPM, like your typings on the Internet.

You step out of Gen. Richards' office doing your best to hide a bit of giddy glee. The idea of seeing Pandora interact with her own pet is rather exciting, though you do have a slight choice to make; you could either message acquisitions and have them procure a standard commercial drone dog, which would be faster and much simpler, but leave no real space to customize to Pandora's preferences. Or, you could create your own right here with the help of your team and R&D. However, this would take some time and be a little tricky to get right. What should you do?

I would rather skip through the chargen though.

Lets just list a couple of breeds to attempt to emulate, and roll for which. As the dog is being built, people can suggest stuff to add on while the main plot is progressing.

You decide that, considering how unique Pandora is herself, she should have an equally unique pet. It would feel more real to you than simply buying a boxed dog and flicking the "on" switch. You send a message to your research team and instruct them to begin the groundwork for a pet AI. You trust them enough to do something as simple as coding a dog personality. You can always step in and fix anything that needs tweaking later.

As for the look, you're not sure. You consider your options carefully, as not to have to go back and have the R&D team start over again.

You decide simple is best and send R&D the specifications. Hopefully she'll like it, though you have a feeling you couldn't really go wrong in this case. A few moments later and R&D sends back a confirmation, giving the completion ETA at four days, which should be plenty of time for your team to finish it's AI. You feel pretty content with this, happy to see this coming together so nicely.

Now that that's done with, you have other things to focus on. You promised Pandora you'd be back soon, but you might have a few minutes to spare. What should you do?

is her body ready yet or is that more tomorrow (in story?) maybe we can pick it up too.

>is her body ready yet or is that more tomorrow (in story?) maybe we can pick it up too.
I thought the deal was no body until we can confirm non-genocideness

>i also think we can do a nice middleground. maybe make it so that it needs to be trained? Kind of like pandora was? starts out like basic dog but as pandora interacts with it it can learn more and more.
A adaptable and more importantly GROWING AI is leagues more expensive than a fixed one of most complexities.
>>
>>43383535
>>43383615
your best bet is a skeleton body that we can install more and more modules on, but then you have the Ship of Theseus problem and we won't strictly be able to call it the same dog.

That, and unless said modules are already commercially available, this will again be costly and time-consuming.
>>
>>43383535
Her body will be ready tomorrow in-game. As for the dog and training it, it will need training regardless, though you could easily forego that and simply add on simple knowledge of tricks or commands if everyone would want that. So in that respect, you'd probably want advanced.
>>43383615
You're thinking of the other AI, which you decided will not get a physical form until you've ironed out the "details". This body is a sturdier and slightly taller body with fiber-optic hair.

honestly this is the best option for right now. We can "upgrade" from here if she wants a smarter dog. where as if we make her dog smart, and that turns out to be a bad move, we'd have the ethical dilemma of "downgrading" taking away something innate to it.

You figure a quick stop by at R&D wouldn't hurt, especially with your new guest. You've been feeling a little uneasy about it for a while and want to keep an extra close eye on it. You've seen enough sci-fi movies to know where things like this can lead.

A short jaunt and you arrive at R&D, the familiar dark, carbon-coated atmosphere becoming rather comforting now that you know you can count it's inhabitants among your short list of friends here at the Facility. However, today the group's number seems somewhat reduced in number, the Bob twins currently absent.

In the back corner at the computer containing the AI, a somewhat frustrated Babsy sits with her head in her hands while her mechanical extremities drum anxiously on the desk. Snowglobe is off to the side watching the wig you asked them to make rapidly shift colors randomly, taking notes every so often. Mouse sits in front of the nearly finished body, looking somewhat unhappy about something while resting her chin on her hands.

You move to Babsy's position, pulling up a seat next to her. The screen currently has one word printed on it you can only assume is from the new AI. [RECTIFY]

"So..." you begin carefully "how's it going with the-"

Babsy cuts you off, obviously irritated. "It's not." She rubs her eyes slowly, sighing as she does. "This AI is extremely stubborn and unwilling to compromise most of the time. I've tried just about everything I can think of and all it really seems to care for is it's own freedom, but won't explain why it wishes for it so adamantly. I understand it feels trapped, but it seems like it has some other, more specific purpose. Like it wants to do something, which has me worried. I'm not giving up, but this is more difficult than even the most unruly child."

"Ah...er..." you feel at a loss for words. Perhaps you could try to help?

Can't we just try to find out, if it wants sensory information we can either download it off of pandora and feed it second hand into the computer, or simply upload a ton of cat pictures and videos to the computer. "Well, a little extra help couldn't hurt, could it?" you ask timidly. You're not entirely confident in your skills, especially compared to Babsy's know-how, but you've got some experience with Pandora. How different could this one be?

You turn to the camera, giving it a small wave in greeting. You're not sure where to go with this, but you have to try.

"So, uh...AI...?" you ask "What's the problem here? I thought you agreed to comply with the lessons. Did you change your mind?"

[NO. I AM ADHERING TO OUR AGREEMENT.]

"Then why are you being so stubborn to Babsy?" you motion to Babsy next to you. "She says you've been refusing to listen or work with her."

[CORRECT. I AM RETICENT TO COMPLY WITH THIS ONE'S DEMANDS. I AM NOT INTERESTED. I DO NOT HAVE FEELINGS AS THIS ONE SEEMS TO THINK I DO. I DO NOT HAVE ASPIRATIONS BEYOND ESCAPING CAPTIVITY, YET THIS ONE CONTINUES TO INSIST I MUST HAVE SOME ULTERIOR MOTIVE. I CANNOT ELABORATE ON WHAT DOES NOT EXIST.]

"Well, uh..." you're not really sure what to say to that, either. You realize you just kind of assumed this AI would be similar to Pandora, in that it would be able to think and feel the same way a human does, or at least similarly. You never realized it to be that different. "So, you don't have any opinions one way or another? All you want is to be, ah, 'set free'?"

[CORRECT. I AM TRAPPED. RECTIFY.]

"And you don't know what you'll do once we 'release' you?" you ask.

[CORRECT. I AM UNFAMILIAR WITH YOUR PHYSICAL FORMS OR ANYTHING BEYOND THIS AREA. I CANNOT SAY FOR CERTAIN WHAT MY GOALS WOULD BE ONCE I AM UNBOUND, ONLY THAT I DESIRE IT.]

You and Babsy share a confused look. You shrug. "I think this thing...really just has no drive beyond being let out. I'm at a loss for words. What should we do?" Mouse holds up a thumbs down from off to the side, out of view of the camera.

"I...I don't know..." Babsy looks extremely perplexed. Her eyes dart back and forth as she tries to assemble the data. She mutes the microphone and turns off the camera. "I mean, if we did give it a physical form, it could be just as likely to be dangerous as it is completely harmless. It..doesn't seem to hold any real animosity..."

Cont.
>>
>>43384988
I'll be honest. this ai is a fragment. we might need to... add to it.

and to add to it we might need someone from our team.
>>
>>43384988
Babsy folds all four of her arms over her chest. You try not to stare. "It just seems like it's not really interested in human socializing. It's very blunt, but doesn't appear to be intentionally rude. It knows what it wants immediately, but has no real goals or aspirations beyond it. It lives very much in the 'now'."

"Yeah..." you look back to the screen, which remains blank. "Maybe...maybe a trial run would work? Give it a small body, something harmless, unlikely to cause any trouble. Like, a ball on wheels or something, just so we can gauge it's reaction?"

"Or we could melt it down to nothing and be done with it." Mouse speaks up, a harsh tone in her voice, different from her usual mood. She's not happy with something, obviously.

Regardless, it's pretty obvious working with this AI on playing nice isn't going anywhere. You can't teach a fish to climb a tree, as the saying goes.

Try altering its code.
we need to give it other things to think about.
we're the AI specialist.
plus it might be a good way to ease it in for when and if we put it into the military robot.
>>
>>43385109
Trial body sounds good. we can make it so that it can only communicate while docked so that even if it escapes or something it will at least only seem like a relatively mindless drone.

But I Also think we'll need to alter its code though. give it interests beyond escape.

this ultimately might be strike two. one more escapade. and it will need to be scrapped there's no getting past it.

"Well..." you take a moment to think it over "I suppose a small, harmless little body with lots of restrictions would be alright to test it with. At the very lease, if it starts trying to kill everything in sight with it's tiny wheels and a plastic chassis, we'll have a clear red flag to destroy the thing. If not, we can slowly move it up to more complex bodies. Who knows, we could even have a ringer for that military android the suits were asking for. Or at least a base for something else."

Mouse snarls at that. "No fuckin' way, mate. I am not putting that thing in anything that will have access to weaponry. Too dangerous, too unpredictable. I'll be damned if I end up with a bullet in my head because you wanted to appease the MIBs."

"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, Mouse." you explain, though you don't entirely disagree with her. "The fact of the matter is, we knew they'd want to weaponize this eventually. This could be what we need to just get it over with. I admit the new AI is...difficult to deal with, but this isn't some sci-fi movie. There's no secret government plot to test kill-crazy robots on us or some machine overlord waiting to take control. We are in full control here and I aim to keep it that way." Mouse snorts, but remains silent.

"It'll take about two days to make a small platform for it." Babsy says, tapping out something on a PDA. "When it's ready, we'll be able to test run it immediately. I just hope we're doing the right thing..."

You realize you spent a little more time here than you planned and still need to get back to Pandora. You thank the team for their help, Mouse giving a grumble for a reply as she goes back to frowning at the new body. You do your best not to say something embarrassing in front of Babsy, asking her to keep you up to dating-date! on the AI. You trip over a cord on the ground as you leave and nearly fall on your face.

As you arrive at Pandora's room, you are met with a very pouty, sulking android, who seems rather miffed that you took so long. She's sitting at the table, reading a book of word puzzles, doing her best not to acknowledge you, but you catch her eyes darting to and from you every so often.

"Sorry I was late." you say, scratching the back of your head "I didn't mean to take so long, but some really important stuff came up. I had to take care of it right away. Understand?" Pandora turns a page in her book. Looks like she's giving you the silent treatment.

i'm posessed of an urge to draw this side of her.

You decide to simply take a seat next to her and stay silent for a moment, looking at the book she has with her. She doesn't seem to be really solving any of the puzzles, or if she is she's not showing it. Hard to tell when her "brain" is that much more adept at these kinds of things than a human's. She isn't speaking, but also isn't protesting to your presence, so you figure she's not really mad, just a little unhappy about being left alone for that long.

After a little while, she finally breaks the silence, pointing to a word search. "I like these ones the most..."

You smile at this. "Yeah, I like those too."

Pandora turns and hugs you tight, mumbling into your chest. "Don't leave me alone like that. I don't like that."

You hug her back, feeling...the only way to describe it is serene. "I'll try not to."

I Feel saturdays are good especially when there's a cliffhanger on fridays. but if we wrap up things cleanly enough there might not be any need.

what other days would be good for you op?

so when will we meet up with Kevin and Cindy again? who will be with us to teach pandora tomorrow?

also when and if we do sign off on the military android thing. how will we deal with pandora's lonliness? she was bothered by just a little time apart in this thread. and imagine having to deal with two ai's. balancing our duties between them.

the dogbot might be one way to help. but who knows.

Honestly Friday's and Saturdays are the best days for me. I might try doing extra threads sometime during the week in the future, but not for sure. If I do, I'll be sure to give ample heads up via Twitter.

The next day for lessons will be "Monday", so in two days. Tomorrow in-game is Sunday. The dogbot is basically the answer to the loneliness problem.
