You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Well, first things first, you had to figure out what the hell was going on. You had literally started the opening minutes of your new life blowing up ungodly giant fish things, getting flown back to base in those crazy ass UFO things, and being met by Portland, of all ships.

And she's giving you that LOOK. You know, that look when somebody doesn't expect much out of you, as if you were beneath their standards or something like that.

How do you think Hoell or Cole will react to the WHO saying that processed meats (i.e. bacon, hot dogs, etc.) cause cancer?

"What do you mean by 'trouble?'" You growl, raising one of your eyebrows.

Portland takes a deep breath and marches up to you and leans forward slightly in an attempt to be intimidating. Maybe it would've worked on a pussy little destroyer fresh from the shipyard, but sure as squat wouldn't work on you. Nevertheless, Portland leans forward as close a she can without actually physically touching you.

"Let me be frank." Portland glowers. "I've heard and read up on what you've done, and I saw what you did earlier today."

"Really? How?" Johnston asks.

"Drone footage." Portland says simply, then sees the confused looks Johnston and Heerman give. "I'll explain later."

"Hey, don't ignore me!" You scowl. "Get to the point."

"Those cowboy antics of yours are the exact sort of thing that gets ships sunk." Portland says bluntly. "Getting into close combat with Abyssals like that was a reckless and unnecessary call."

Such a shame Gearings came in rather late to the war, otherwise we'd probably be able to equip them with DASH helicopter drones with torpedoes.

"Oh." You expression immediately darkens and lean forward as well, ramming your forehead against Portland's. Since she was already so close, it didn't really cause that much damage, but to her credit she's not even phased by the impact. "Those are some brave words, coming from a ship that was never at Samar."

"But plenty of other battles." Portland retorts easily.

"Heh, fine." You grin as you concede the point. You knew of Portland's hefty battle record before Leyte Gulf. "But either way, if we wanted to play safe without any risk, we would've joined the Coast Guard."

Now THAT hits Portland in the gut, as she finally leans back without a word, still glaring daggers at you.

"Anyways, we're wasting enough time already." She harumphs, resetting her glasses. "We should go meet the Admiral. He wants to meet you three."

Hm, there's something about the way she talks about him...

You decide it was best to stay quiet and follow her for now. You were still pretty new to this whole "being alive" thing and even though you kind of vaguely remembered this base as Pearl Harbor, it looked far, FAR different from your hazy memories. Right now Portland here was your only lifeline.

However, you do file that little fact away at the back of your mind for later use.

"She seems a little.... stiff, doesn't she?" Johnston whispers in your ear.

"Stiffer than battleship grade armor plate, that's for sure." You roll her eyes. "Where does she get off being so high and mighty like that?"

"Maybe because she was at Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal, just for starters?" Heerman points out.

"Okay, okay." You sigh. "Still doesn't give her free license to be a bitch like that."

"Oh, I'm sure she'll soften up over time!" Johnston says optimistically.

"Like all trust a fucking cruiser." You grumble.

"What was that?" Heerman raises an eyebrow.

"It's nothing." You shake your head.

"Hey, quiet down back there." Portland grunts.

She leads you away from the landing pad, taking a path straight to a large structure you assumed to be the main administration building, where all the big shot officers set up shop. You'd only ever seen the place form a distance, considering back then you couldn't come ashore back in the old days. As you continue to walk, you notice a great deal of activity, which wasn't surprising. Pearl Harbor was always a busy place, especially during wartime. You could get a glimpse of the harbor inside, packed full of grey ships of all sizes and shapes. Really dinky looking ones, though, all armed with puny little cannons that didn't match any one of your 5 inchers in size.

"Geez, no wonder we came back. The Navy must have really went to hell." You mutter to nobody in particular.

Up in the air, you could see planes and other aicraft you couldn't immediately identify circling in the air, no doubt on air patrol. Along the shore, you saw weapons emplacements and fortifications hastily built along the coast looking outward, as if they were expecting an amphibious assault. That was never a good sign.

As you near the administration building, you started seeing more and more of the base staff. They were all pretty much human, but you couldn't immediately tell if there were any shipgirls among them or not. The three of you immediately drew stares and hushed whispers as you passed by. Were shipgirls like you really that out of place?

"Practically everybody's seen that footage of you grand slamming that Abyssal destroyer." Portland grunts without turning around, as if reading your mind.

You hold back from chewing out Portland for getting her baseball terminology wrong, but it was OH SO HARD.

Finally, Portland stops you front of a very ornate wooden door. There's only a simple plaque bolted on, reading "ADMIRAL".

"All right, we're about to meet the Admiral. He's in charge of not only shipgirls, but practically every ship in the Pacific Ocean, so you WILL show him the proper respect, is that clear?" Portland hisses. "So help me god, I will break your superstructures in two if you don't!"

"Yeah, yeah, we hear ya." You roll your eyes.

"Why do I have such a bad feeling about this..." Portland groans as she regains her composure and opens the door.

Here's how it went. Halsey thought that 3rd Fleet was covering the San Bernadino Strait. They weren't. Then, he locates a major Japanese carrier group, consisting of most of Japan's remaining carriers. You know, carriers, the most powerful weapon on the seas. That right there was the last real carrier group they had. Taking it out of the war was seen as a crucial act, as it would ensure our fleets would be pretty much unconstested in the air other than by land based aviation. Thus, since Halsey believed his flanks were secured and there was such a valuable target in front of him, he moved in for the kill.

It was the correct decision to make based on the information he had available. Unfortunately, he did not know that Ozawa's fleet was a decoy, nor did he know that they were effectively out of action due to a lack of carrier pilots. Even more unfortunately, he did not know that the San Bernadino Strait was unguarded.

So, in short, Halsey is not the man to blame for the San Bernadino Strait being unguarded, and he made the right decision based on the information available.

Halsey WAS IN COMMAND of 3rd Fleet. He only went north because he thought Kurita had turned around after the airstrikes that sank the Musashi.

He was pretty wrong.

This one? Mech Engineer Quest, in which we designed a god-tier light mech that incorporated technological innovation (like half-size ammo hoppers) and creature comforts (like hot showers and a kitchenette) on a shoestring budget. The jumpjets screamed loud enough to burst eardrums, we had the maximum-possible movement profile (ie sanic), with more dakka than comparably-fast mechs.

Prepare your Center Torso (Rear)
>>
>>43383049
Zuikaku was. The last of the Pearl carriers. You know, the ones Halsey swore vengeance against when Enterprise sailed in on December 8th.
>>
>>43383136
To be fair, Kurita thought real hard about turning around. Really the only reason he didn't was that he couldn't come back empty-handed.
>>
>>43383142
What was its movement profile anyways? 7/11?
>with more dakka than comparably-fast mechs.
It was like an SRM-6 and some medium lasers and machine guns. Good, but by no means incredible.
>>

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I wonder how facing a team of those in the mechwarrior coliseum would be like.
>>
>>43383136
I flipped around the fleets, whoops.

And they did turn around. Then they turned back.
>>
>>43383201
7/11, yeah. I believe we went with two Medium Lasers and two SRM-4s, which is comparable to a Jenner's 7/11, 4x MdLas and 1x SRM-4. The big thing was that we did it on a shoestring budget with whatever parts we could get our hands on,
>>
>>43383232
Yeah, it's nice but...
To me, the quest wasn't about the design. It was more about the near-autistic participation of everyone involved.
Those ms paint diagrams were a thing of beauty.

You decide that considering this guy was an Admiral, you should at least show him the proper amount of respect as a ship under his command. Honestly, he couldn't be any worse than Halsey, right? You take a deep breath and walk calmly in. You honestly didn't know what to expect, but you were still somewhat surprised to see a rather older man sitting behind the desk, with a thick, white beard and hair almost blending in with his white uniform. He seems to be busy with some kind of paperwork, and doesn't even seem to realize you've come in.

"Sir." Portland coughs loudly to get his attention. "The new arrivals are here, as requested."

"Ah yes, yes! Of course!" The Admiral's head snaps up faster than a sailor hearing the words 'shore leave'. "Hoel, Johnston, Heerman, it's wonderful to see you join the fold!"

"Sir!" You and your sisters snap straight and salute, no doubt much to Portland's surprise. "Taffy Three reporting for duty!"

"At ease." The Admiral smiles. "Sweet Pea, that's all for now. You're dismissed."

"Yes sir!" Portland snaps a salute and then quickly reverses out of the room.

Huh, she didn't even protest the Admiral calling her by that nickname like before. Interesting...

"Now, I'm sure you three have all sorts of questions." The Admiral smiles warmly. "While we wait for your orientation crew to arrive, you can ask me anything."

Halsey COMMANDED the 3rd Fleet, and his dismissal of Kurita in favor of Ozawa was a classic air admiral's bias that an aircraft carrier always posed a greater threat than a battleship.

Halsey sailed north knowing that Kinkaid possessed more than a carrier task group worth of airpower (18 CVEs roughly equal about 6 fleet carriers) and a force of heavy ships as well.

Unfortunately Halsey's decision to take ALL his ships north (as opposed to leaving TF34 guarding the straight) never made it through to either Kinkaid or Nimitz, so Kinkaid sent all his heavy ships south to rape Nishimura and never thought to screen his north. And because MacArthur paranoid of the Navy plotting behind his back forbid Kinkaid and Halsey from messaging each other directly, Kinkaid only recieved the message that ALL of Halsey's ships had left early morning on the 25th...just as frantic messages started flooding in from Taffy 3.

Excuse me, I mixed my fleets around. For some reason I thought the Seventh Fleet was North Pacific.

Seeing as the enemy had seemingly been turned back in the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, of course he dismissed Kurita. Kurita HAD turned back. He just doubled back yet again once night fell.

With one arm of the pincer movement crushed, and Oldendorf's BBs more than capable of crushing the Southern Force, of course he went after Ozawa. Let's face it, if Ozawa's force DID have its planes, it was by far the more dangerous foe, even if Kurita's force was still quite obviously still sailing for the San Bernadino Strait.

And yes, Halsey figured that the San Bernadino Strait was being covered by the Seventh fleet. Because of this communications failure, it wasn't.

"Oh, okay." You nod. "I guess that makes sense."

"Mhm." The Admiral nods. You notice a bit of a smile under his beard. "You don't seem to be too shaken up."

"Yeah, well, I'm standing here in a human body, so that's one of the least strange things I've heard all day." You shrug, until a cold hand grips your heart. "What about our crews? Did they...?"

The Admiral takes a deep breath.

"I'm sorry to say, but given the amount of time that has passed, very few, if any, of your original crew are still alive. The ones that survived, anyways."

"H-how bad was it?" Johnston stammers.

"Heerman, I believe you would know the answer." The Admiral says grimly.

Both you and Johnston whip your heads around at your sister ship, who fidgets nervously.

"What's he talking about, Heer?" You ask curiously. "You got sunk along with us, right?"

"Shit, girl, I'm glad you made it out!" You say as you bear hug Heerman. "Means our sacrifices weren't in vain!"

"I know, it's so great to see our Heerman serving until the '80s!" Johnston squeals as she picks the both of you up in her own bear hug.

"Well... the latter half of my service life wasn't anything to boast about." Heerman wheezes. "And can you please let me breathe?!"

Both you and Johnston let go, and Heerman takes a deep breathe in.

"So how bad was it?" You ask Heerman.

"Not that bad, consider what we were up against." Heerman sighs. "Include the two of you, Sammy, Gambier Bay, and St. Lo went down."

"...that's it?" You blink.

"Yeah. Shortly after that the Japs retreated." Heerman explains.

"Damn! I would've wanted to see that!" Johnston whines.

"I KNOW!" You stamp your foot in frustration. "Did we really scare 'em off that bad?"

"You did, in fact." The Admiral says with a warm smile. "The Japanese weren't expecting such a vicious fight from a few destroyers, and were convinced American reinforcements were nearby."

"Bad. Ass." You can't hide the stupid grin on your face.

"Yo, Admiral! I got those budgets you were asking about done and- HOLY SHIT!"

You and your sisters turn to see a short, blonde girl, wearing a hooded jacket and holding a stack of papers in her arms. You've never actually seen this girl before in your life, but somewhere deep in side you recognize her clear as day.

This was more true in the 197X to 199X period, but because of how the US and Philipines had a political relationship, the easiest way into the US was via military service, and as we had a massive base in the Philipines (Subic Bay, its re-opening), we had a lot of philipino members who managed to join the Navy and gain rank and become the higher enlisted, leading to the 'philipino consparicy'.

"SAMMY YOU SON OF A BITCH!" You yell happily as you tackle hug the cheeky little destroyer escort, sending papers flying in all directions like confetti.

"Took you losers long enough!" Sammy laughs. "Seriously, what the hell took you so long?!"

"Awww, so she really did miss us!" Johnston giggles as she gives Sam a vicious noogie.

"Better quit it or I'll beat your shittily armored sterns down!" Sam laughs as she tries to wriggle out of your grip.

"Girls, behave." The Admiral coughs, and something about his voice causes you all to instantly stand back at attention, with Sam quickly straightening out her jacket and bending down to gather up the papers.

"That will be quite all right, Sam." The Admiral smiles. "I can handle it. You need to show these three girls around the base. Get them familiarized with things."

"Aye aye, sir!" Sam salutes and grins stupidly at you. "C'mon, then! There's so much you girls gotta see!"

"Hold up." You narrow you eyes after you exit the Admiral's office and are well out of earshot. "You're one of the roughest, toughest little ships I know! Why the hell are you a pencil pusher?!"

"Ah, well, one thing led to another, and I ended up filling the role of the Admiral's secretary." Sam shrugs and points to her legs. "Besides, fun as it is, these damn little screws of mine can't quite keep up with the rest of the girls."

"Sounds rough." Heerman frowns.

"Aw no, being the the secretary gets you all kinds of perks!" Sam smiles maliciously. "I am practically the Admiral's mouthpiece, so I essentially have free reign over this entire fucking base, as long as I get the signatures just right..."

"You FORGE orders?" You gasp, slightly impressed.

"Ah, nothing important like that!" Sam shakes her head. "I'm kinda like the base's fixer, ya know? You need something, I can pull the strings to get it for ya! Big macs, bootleg Chinese DVDs, porn, the works! For a price, of course."

"How about a night of passionate love?" Johnston asks playfully.

"Depends which way your flag blows." Sam chuckles darkly.

"O-oh." Johnston's face reddens, not expecting an actual answer.

"I think a history lesson is in order." You say. "Where's the best place we can learn that shit?"

"Ah, well, there's plenty of study aids and this cool as shit thing called the internet to help you out with that." Sam says happily. "But for current events, well, I know just the guy to talk to!"

With that, Sam trots happily down the hall at a rather brisk pace. Along the way, you note how most of the base staff seem to part way in front of her in respect. For a few others, she reaches into her seemingly endless pockets and tosses a few unmarked packages to other staff as she passes by.

"There's a bunch of things that are hard to come by these days. Not easy to ship things by sea with Abyssals about." Sam explains. "Anyways, here we are!"

Sam then leads you into a dimly lit room that sort of resembled a classroom or briefing room, with rows of desks lined up. At the head of the room, you see a man in a Captain's uniform.

"Yo, Cap!" Sam salutes casually. "Got the new arrivals in!"

"I see." The dark haired Captain turns to you and nods respectfully. "Captain Takeuchi. I serve as a liaison between shipgirls and conventional naval forces. Please take a seat."

The four of you take a seat up at the front, and once you do, The Captain picks up a remote and clicks it, starting a video on the projection screen in front of you.

"Now, I'm sure you all have a lot of questions." He says. "So we'll start off slow..."

That marine had better not be fucking bored. There was an assassination attempt on a rear admiral on his watch, on his base, when his very clear orders (which he used to justify getting out of doing anything else around the base) were for force protection, the defense of DoD personnel and assets.

You think the CNO will care that he didn't have the full platoon he requested, when he was off in his personal workshop working on misappropriated AR lowers while the base is crawling with contractors of questionable background?

"Waitaminute." You narrow your eyes. "Isn't Takeuchi a Jap name?"

"I'm assure you, I'm just as American as you." Takeuchi sighs, apparently used this question. "I'm ethnically Japanese, but I was born and raised in the United States. In fact, my grandfather fought in the 442nd."

"He's legit, trust me." Sam vouches.

"Fine fine." You grumble, not wanting to waste any more time. "Then just give us the lowdown on the Abyssals."

"All right." The Captain hits the remote, showing an image of one of those giant black fish things you fought earlier. "This is an Abyssal in its base form. In all honestly, we don't really what they are or where they came from. What we do know is that they are hostile to human life."

"You must have some ideas at least." Heerman says.

"Honestly, there are many." The Captain sighs. "Some say they're supernatural beings, the ghosts of long sunk ships seeking revenge. Others say they're an extraterrestrial race that landed here at some point. And there are a few who say that they're an ancient species that had lain dormant under the ocean for who knows how long. What is not debatable is that they are a hostile force seeking the destruction of the human race."

The Captain hits another button, showing a different image. This time showing lots of grey ships similar to the ones you've seen in the bay outside.

"This is the first recorded surface action against the Abyssal threat. You see, two years ago, in 2018, there were reports filtering in all over the world about monster attacks, and civilian shipping going missing. Once it was determined that the Abyssals were behind it, well, the Chinese navy assembled in the South China Sea towards a large concentration of them, intending to force a major battle."

"Let me guess, it didn't go well." You predict.

"Wait, the Chinese have a navy now?" Johnston blinks.

"Well, HAD a navy." The Captain shakes his head, confirming your fears and he plays the video. "This was taken by a Global Hawk we had observing the battle."

You watch the video as the Chinese ships close with what looks to be a large oil spill, until you realize that the black mass was actually hundreds, maybe even thousands of those Abyssal fish things. Then you see flashes of light as rockets stream out of the ships, flying to the mass and dropping down, ripping through them with explosions and fire. However, it seemed to be as effective as throwing a rock in a pond as the mass kept getting closer. Suddenly, larger rockets fall directly from the sky, landing into the swarm, again tearing into it. However, it's not enough, and the Abyssals keep coming.

"Now, what you're seeing here is the Chinese attemping to use antiship missiles against the Abyssal destroyers." The Captain explains. "However, these missiles were designed to hit ships of equivalent or larger size, not roughly human sized targets, and even assuming perfect accuracy, they didn't have nearly enough to destroy all of the Abyssals."

"But the planes and guns seem to be doing a good job against them." Heerman points out.

"They do, but the Chinese made a critical mistake." The Captain continues. "See how you can see so many ships in on the screen? That packed too tightly together, so they can't maneuver and they're blocking each others' line of sight, preventing maximum coverage for their guns."

"Why would they do that?" You frown.

"Well, at the time, China's navy was relatively new, and they were eager to flex their muscle. They were going out expecting an easy victory, and wanted everybody to see. They let their pride take priority over proper tactics, and well..."

At this point, you see the swarm reach the first of the Chinese ships, a few frigates and small boats. They're either torn apart by mass cannon fire, or sink as the Abyssal destroyers leap onto the deck, flopping around and attacking the crew or literally tearing chunks out of the hull as if it was paper.

"And you can imagine what happened next." The Captain says as he turns off the video and checks his watch. "I'm sorry, we're running low on time, so I can give one more lecture before we have to end things for today."

"Can you tell us more about shipgirls, then?" You ask. "What exactly ARE we?"

"That... I can't really give you a definitive answer, either." The Captain shakes his head. "Like the Abyssals, your origins are a complete mystery to us. Physically, you're human in every way, yet for some reason you have the ability to summon and use Rigs. You also appear to have an instinctive urge to battle Abyssals, which suggests that you're natural enemies."

"So, did we appear at the same time as the Abyssals, then?" You ask.

"No, not right away." The Captain shakes his head. "After the Chinese Navy's defeat, nations around the world recalled their navies to protect their own shores. The US Navy made the call to abandon its remote island bases and withdrew either back to major bases in Japan and the United States. The Abyssal threat grew and as they attacked shores and islands all over the world, they massed to attack Pearl Harbor."

"And obviously it didn't work." You note.

"Obviously." The Captain confirms. "Just as the Abyssal fleet began its attack, several shipgirls appeared out of nowhere and helped turned the tide."

You then see a video of a quartet of battleships from a sky eye view. They were too small to make out exactly who they were, but there definitely much older pattern BBs. You watch as they literally wade through the Abyssal tide, guns blazing and slaughtering everything that crossed their paths. The regular ships didn't seem to be firing, either because they didn't want to risk hitting their saviors or were simply in awe.

"Since then, more shipgirls had been appearing all over the world." The Captain notes. "All types of ships and nationalities. The only consistent factor among all of them are that they were ships that were active during World War II. Don't even ask me why, because we don't know, either."

"...Huh." You frown.

"Anyways, I deeply apologize, but there are other matters I need to take care of." The Captain nods his head politely to you. "I will make sure the proper research materials will be distributed to you."

With that, Captain Takeuchi shuffles out of the room, leaving you with just your sisters and Sam again.

"So I assume you got some sort of lab or place you do all your sciency shit, then." You say so Sam. "Can we take a look?"

"Of course!" Sam nods. "You'll probably be dropping by there eventually anyways. The Doctor just LOVES getting her specimens, you know!"

"Specimens?" Johnston blinks curiously.

"You know, dead Abyssals." Sam explains. "She likes it if you bring 'em back for her to study. The more intact the better. Has this weird creepy obsession with it, actually."

"Really now." You frown.

Sam then leads you to a very nondescript looking building. It was squat and grey with zero windows and surrounded by many, MANY guards. Sam leads the way in, her mere presence being more than enough security clearance to get you through multiple security checkpoints and gates.

"And here is where the magic happens!" Sam motions around. "This is special, since regular folk ain't allowed in here. Shipgirl privilege!"

You look around and see that everything is a sterile white. Men and women in labcoats and reflective goggles shuffle about, doing whatever it is they do. However, the biggest draw is the dozens and dozens of tanks of dead Abyssals, floating in some kind preservative. However, before you get the chance to examine them closer, you hear a disapproving voice speak up.

"Samuel! What have I told you about bringing visitors in here without notifying me?" A woman scientist chides.

"Come on, don't call me thaaaaaat." Sam whines.

"I will if you will not follow proper lab procedures!" The scientist tuts and turns to you. "My apologies. Dr. Vahlen, chief scientist for the Abyssal Research Facility. I hope you are suitably impressed with our facilities?"

>>
>>43386288
I forgot she was a fucking hun
>>
>>43386311
Kinda, sorta, it's complicated, but short answer: Yes.

Long answer, Vahlen's dad took her genetic material, made 6 braindead clones of her, tested a bunch of genemods, one 'woke up', and Cole was 'born'.
>>
>>43386311
Technically, Cole's a modified clone of Vahlen. So will people be mentioning on how similar Hoel looks to her?

So i take she also appear on VT quest, seeing how people calls her 'Krauts"? I don;t recall anyone call her 'krauts' on CIMQ.

"It's pretty creepy." You say, eyeing all of the storage tanks warily. "Feels like I'm being watched all the time."

"Don't be silly, it's just all of the surveillance cameras we installed." Vahlen says with a smile.

"So, erm, what exactly do you do here?" You ask.

"Ah, well," Vahlen's expression lights up. You kinda get the impression she likes to exposit her findings to others. "we here study the various strains of Abyssals to find weaknesses as well as gauge their capabilities. We've found so many amazing things about these creatures! Do you know that they have a specialized digestive system that breaks down whatever they eat into an easy to transport, resource rich paste? And that they can convert almost any known material into this paste? The presumably use this paste to reproduce or manufacture new Abyssals. They can even recycle their own corpses! Rather ingenious creatures!"

You could almost swear Vahlen's eyes were sparkling at the marvel of nature or engineering or whatever the fuck Abyssals happened to be.

"Anyways, you must leave immediately." Vahlen tuts. "The most recent patrol just brought in a new train of Abyssal we much dissect right away! Now shoo!"

Vahlen shoos all of you away as you see a black, bloody mass being carted in on a large gurney. You can almost swear you see human limbs and maybe even a face before the security door slams shut.

Yeah... you're not sure if you want to hang around the lab too often.

Your next stop is the Armory, which actually isn't too far from the labs. As opposed to the pristine, impossibly clean laboratories, the workshops in the Armory were dark, dirty, noisy, and constantly in motion. On the main floor, you could see dozens of Rigs suspended from the ceiling on chains as a combination of human and faerie workers set about disassembling or reassembling them for maintenance and repairs. It was... quite an odd sight. You pass by a sign saying "MIND THE FAERIES", and hear a angry little squeaking sound when you realize you nearly stepped on one of the little buggers.

"Oh, sorry little guy." You apologize.

The mechanic fairy just huffs and shuffles off, off to do whatever she had set out to do.

"Ah, it's not often we get visitors." You hear an old and warm voice greet you, and you turn to see a rather older man with glasses, clearly of Asian descent.

"Dr. Shen, Chief Rig Engineer at your service." The head mechanic introduces himself. "As you can see, it's my duty to make sure that your Rigs are kept properly maintained and repaired when they receive damage."

"With some help!" Johnston giggles as a little knot of faeries carrying a box of rivets shuffles past.

"Honestly, I wouldn't even trust these things near a microwave, much less this complicated machinery." Shen sighs. "But I must concede that these little things know how the Rigs far better than any human engineer, me included."

"Aw, how can you hate these little guys?" Johnston cooes.

"They may be efficient, but they're very fickle creatures." Shen shakes his head. "Ah yes, and Hoel, was it?"

"That's right." You nod.

"Would you mind if I take a look at your bat?" He asks. "Not to mention, to summon your Rig so we can store it here for maintenance."

"Sure." You nod as your Rig pops into existence. Almost immediately, faeries swarm around you as they decouple the mechanical armor and hook it up to a crane for transport. You pull out your bat from the Rig. "Why do you need it?"

"I am just a little curious." Shen smiles as he gently takes the bat. "You see, this bat looks, and feels like it is made of wood. Yet, when you hit that Abyssal with it, the bat didn't seem to be damaged at all. A regular wooden bat would have splintered into pieces with an impact like that. This seems to support my theory that shipgirls can 'fortify' items from the Rig, to be far more durable and physical possible."

"So what are you going to do with it?" You raise an eyebrow suspiciously.

"I would ask that you let me borrow for study." Dr. Shen requests. "It may help better our understanding of material sciences and how to further improve our Rigs."

"Sure, go ahead." You nod. "But I expect to get dibs on anything you find."

"Deal." Dr. Shen nods. "I will try to keep it as intact as possible."

"You better." You warn.

"Well, that's pretty much it for today." Sam smiles. "So, how about we grab something to eat?"

"Sure, where do we go?" You ask, you stomach growling.

"Heh, we got our own little restaurant on base run by shipgirls for shipgirls!" Sam grins widely. "And thanks to yours truly, it's always stocked with the best shit!"

"Sounds like a plan." You nod. "Johnston? Heer? Any complaints.

"I'm really hungry, too!" Johnston says in agreement.

"No harm in it." Heerman shrugs.

The four of you head to a small, homely little building, with a simple, crudely painted sign, but it's too dim now to really make out what it says. Sam eagerly leads you inside, and you immediately get this cozy feeling. It's no diner or anything. It feels very folksy, like a country cottage or something like that.

"Aw damn, it looks like she's out." Sam groans. "Looks like we're gonna have to wait for her to come back and... aw nuts."

"What's wrong?" You ask.

"The resident party pooper is here." Sam sighs and points to the bar, where you see an older, dark haired cruiser slumped over, the stench of alcohol wafting over to your nose, even from this distance.

"Fuck you too, Shammy." San Francisco slurs as she downs another shot of whiskey.

>And that's it for tonight! Unfortunately, a combination of tests and Blizzcon next week means I may not be able to run Kancolle and Vertical Tanks as normal, through I'll try to run a makeup thread for Kancolle on Sunday night if that happens!
>However, Vertical tanks is still happening this Saturday, so don't miss it!
