Stage 102: A little history, a lot of pain, and a voice from afar.

You open your eyes before Yui-chan is halfway across the temple floor, more because you don't want her thinking you're asleep than any other reason. It's been a little less than half of an hour, and she's carrying two bowls, one with a spoon sticking out of it, the other filled with rice and topped with what are most likely pickled radishes and cabbage leaf. She settles on the other side of Akari, speaking softly.

“The others are still eating, but will be here soon, aniki. The people here are pretty nice. There's a couple of oni-children and a single dragon-woman, but everyone else is human. The dragon woman is Wood too, like the princess.” You nod solemnly, as she prepares the food for Akari, stirring the soup and partly separating the rice. “The oni-children are Water and Stone, but there's only three. They're mostly groundskeepers.”

It's unlikely they'd be anything other than average spirit-children, just making livings and avoiding trouble. They they were anything else you probably would have heard about them at some point or another. “Thank you Yui-niji-chan. That's helpful. Are the beaches off limits?”

She shakes her head. “No, but there's no pearl diving allowed except by the Ama, and that's within special times and in certain places. They don't want anyone hurting their pearl-beds I guess.” she sounds dubious, but then she's not used to the oceans. For that mater, not many dragonettes are – you're an outlier. Smiling you run your hand through her hair, and she relaxes visibly.

“Akari will be fine. I made very sure of that.” You did it by asking Kiki-hime to perform surgery, in addition to Kiku-chan and Yui-niji-chan performing their own peculiar healing skills to help Akari recover from a painful and very unpleasant beating by the stone dragonne who taught you and she hand-to-hand combat. It has literally made her the single best hand-to-hand combatant in all of Clan Ryo.

It's an impressive coup, and will make everyone think twice about assaulting your family when it's discovered he's dead.

With a sigh you stand up, undressing silently as Yui checks Akari's bandages and stitches.

[X] Miko-Style Dress Up, gotta look the part.
[X] Casual and Baggy Basics, don't stand out stylishly.

You pull a few pieces of odd clothing from ~Nowhere~, flexing your left hand as you do so. It's completely healed externally, though you can see some flaws and shifted places on the inside of your claws, like break-lines where the colors no longer flow directly but are off by minute amounts. Pulling on a pair of soft white cotton pants, tied at the waist with a thick braided cotton rope with red tassels, and gathered at the ankles, you then slip on some simple zori. Akari glances at you, approvingly, as you pull a a simple sleeveless tank top over your head, following it with white cotton jacket you cut the sleeves off of and fasten with hastily added red-and-gold Chinese knot work fasteners. Adding a carved scallop-shell comb to keep your hair back as you knot it carefully and thickly, to make it look a whole lot shorter than it actually is, she smiles brightly.

You return her grin with one of your own, the tomboyish look foiled by your curves, but still looking nice and casual while hinting at the religious nature of your companions. It's simple, suits you, and is about the last thing anyone would look for you to wear. Akari opens her eyes and you incline your head, startling Yui into nearly spilling soup all over your injured friend. You walk over and kneel next to Akari once more as she looks up at you blearily, her eyes unfocused.
>>
>>43371639
“Hey, niji-chan. You feel all right? I think Inau-kun gave Kiku-chan some aconite to use on you.” Yui nods sagely, looking resolute and strong, though her heart beats faster, seeing how her lover is not feeling well.

“I'm all right aniki. You go and do what you need to.” She takes several slow, deep breaths, and you wait, expecting her to finish what she was saying, and you're not disappointed. “Yui-chan will take care of me.” Yui's glowing eyes shimmer with unshed tears but she's smiling.

[X] If it's Akari-chan it can't be helped....
[X] Rely on Yui to make sure she really is okay.
[XX] Kiss her on the forehead, and leave quietly.

Running your tail along Yui's back, to reassure her, you lean over and kiss Akari on the forehead. “If it's Akari-niji-chan, then it can't be helped....but we'll try anyways.” Akari's eyes close as you kiss her, opening to gaze up at you, barely focused. “My Yui-niji-chan will make sure of it.”

Yui takes a large porcelain headrest shaped like a grey tabby cat with a red bow-collar out of ~Nowhere~ and lifts Akari's head so she can eat more easily. “You have to eat, Akari,” Yui says firmly, as she gathers some rice and a pickle in the chopsticks. Akari obediently opens her mouth and takes the mouthful, chewing slowly and carefully as she lets her eyes slip mostly closed.

Silently you get to your feet and slip outside, letting Yui take care of your best friend and her wife-to-be. You really should take a day and just make wedding plans all day long. Not just theirs, but yours, and maybe one for Kiku and Er Yin. Or maybe an official collaring ceremony, they have those for S&M couples, don't they? You think so, you'll have to research it. It would be totally cute to see Kiku-chan on a leash....right before she turned it to molten slag.

As you arrange Matagama-no-Shitoki about your neck, adding to the foreign priestess appearance, you not that there are only a few people are in the vicinity of the temple. They only spare you a couple of curious glances, hurrying to their own workplaces and duties undoubtedly. You glance around, studying the building and the architecture, as well as memorizing the layout and points of interest. A nearby 'You Are Here' map helps as well, and that completes your mental picture of the Island of Pearls. A beach is of course ideal. And you need to relax still yourself.

These are not going to be sandy, soft beaches, but more pebbled beaches, artificially restored after the storms that can often leave them barren down to bedrock. Still, there might be some exceptions.

[] Locate somewhere private to escape to a beach quickly..
[] Find your own way on foot, annoying as it might be.

The brief study is enough to gain your bearings, but to be perfectly honest there's not enough information to help you locate a beach nearby. The place looks, and probably is walled in; storms could easily turn the place into a death trap for the unwary and a tsunami would wreck the place terribly without the walls to protect it.

Sometimes, however, authority can be useful, and if there's one thing Japan has, it's more than its share of gate guards. You can't go anywhere without seeing private security. And the best way to work around and break policies is to know what they are to begin with. O the way, you meet a couple of middle aged women who have deep tans and the roughened skin of professional pearl divers.

They nod their hellos, but you pause and bow over both your hands, pressing them together, which brings both of them up short. “Please excuse my ignorance. Could you perhaps tell me where there is a small beach to rest upon and give offerings to Owatatsumi and Repun Kamuy?” You stand up and smile uncertainly, careful only to lower your hands when they meet your eyes.

The two women look surprised, but one smiles. “Well, there are no true beaches here, but there is a small beach along the south corner, near the western wall. Are you one of the priestesses that have come?”

[+] It is my duty and privilege to help them; it would not be inaccurate to call me assistant, though I merely do what I can to help.

The question isn't surprising to you, of course. Naturally they would ask it of you, especially with how you are dressed. But the answer that comes to mind isn't the sort of answer you would give as a Clan Ryo member hiding her identity. Certainly, it is the first thing that comes to mind, but at the same time it just doesn't seem proper to do so.

“I would say that I am merely here to assist them; it is my duty and privilege to do so. I help as I may, and they are gracious in allowing me to do so.” You bow over your folded hands again, and you're really quite sincere about the things you are saying.

Both of the woman smile brightly, and nod to you, bowing in the simply and friendly manner of strangers to a young person. “That is wonderful, to have you here then. We have not had many miko or priestesses here in a long time!” the older of the two explains warmly.

You smile and boy again, feeling rather at ease with these women. “Your kindness is most appreciated, obaa-sama.” She actually blushes a little, and you bow again. Her companion, the one who told you were the beach was, smiles and bows several times to you, the short, simple bows again.
>>
>>43373318
“Please don't mention it, it is our pleasure. We look forward to the ceremony tonight!” You smile back and bow one last time.

“Please, may you find what you seek in abundance and with ease. Your kindness is too much for this simple person.” They both bow and turn, discussing the polite young woman you appear to be (and for a few moments, entirely were). Turning, you make your way towards the causeway, where there should be a security guard posting, at the very least.

Luckily you don't have to walk that far – there is a security kiosk along the walkways to the east, where a small cafe and souvenir shop is. It is occupied by one middle aged guard, who is setting things up and making a pot of tea on a burner in the small kiosk. Forcing yourself to approach slowly, you wait until he notices you before moving close.

He looks at you and seems a touch concerned. “Eh, who might you be, young miss?” Not startled or distressed, or even worried, just a little confused.

[XXX] I am assistant to the miko and her priestess, sir....
[XX] Ah, sorry for disturbing you, I need a guidebook, please....
[+] Thank you for the warm welcome the island has granted.

You can see from his uniform that he's definitely private security, and while he has a radio, he has nothing more dangerous on him than pepper spray. He doesn't even have handcuffs, but really that's not surprising. On the other hand, you're certain there is much more....~prepared~ security in the museums and display areas.

Bowing over your hands, you drop your eyes again, and he straightens quite a bit. “I am assistant to the miko and their priestess, oji-sama.” As you stand up he looks more than mollified, and seems quite attentive rather than suspicious. “I am sorry for disturbing you at this hour, but I need a guide-book, if you have one you may spare, or can direct me to where I may find one.” Bowing again, you apologize formally once more.

“Well, young miss, I have one here you may use. Ah, you're part of the traveling group of miko, giving offerings! I understand now.” He smiles, relaxing and turning to dig through a pile of books and pamphlets. It takes him a moment, during which you bow to several passers by, including a curious but respectful Water oni who is dressed like an office-lady, rather than a diver as you half-expected.
>>
>>43374121
He comes up with a green covered pamphlet that proclaims 'Mikimoto Pearl Island Guide Book' but it doesn't seem to be the standard tourist guide book. “You might find this much more helpful; it's the one we give to the Ama divers when the new ones arrive to stay a while. It has all the staff regulations in it as well, and should help you a lot, young miss.”

He's right, it will do just that. You bow deeply. “Thank you kindly, oji-sama, and thank you all for the warm welcome you have given my priestess and her miko. I cannot say how grateful I am.” you bow again and he shakes his hands at you, embarrassed as all heaven.

“Oh, no, please don't thank me, it is really nothing!” You thank him again anyways, and he blushes even more, to the amusement of several of the workers passing by. You bow once more and quickly make your way along the walkways.

It doesn't take you long to read through the guide book; it's pretty basic stuff, rules, regulations, seasonal requirements, listings of which oyster and mussel beds are where, depths and tidal information for the next few months, as well as instructions on seeding and proper care and control of the shellfish. It does state that the beaches are all right for short rests or to escape any dangerous fish – specifically nurse and goblin sharks, as well as lion's mane jellyfish – but not for much else.

On the other hand, they're entirely isolated from the island by the walls, and would be perfect for some private time.

[] Go ahead and use the beach.
[] A rooftop will suffice.
[] Catch up to the oni-child, see of she can give you a suggestion.
[] Find one of the divers, perhaps they might have an idea.
[] The forest has plenty of quiet places that might be effective.

Should we use Water Eyes? Additional infos might be very good, especially since we're dealing with our divine powers
>>
>>43374672
Water Eyes doesn't have much use unless there's actually information for us to use.
>>

Or maybe Void Eyes, since we're dealing with the island's Feng Shui

They let us percieve the events and the surroundings more precisely. I'm not exactly sure what we're searching right now, though.

[X] Go ahead and use the beach.

Considering the place is a location where there are lots of fairly expensive and valuable objects, and despite your ability to cancel out cameras and surveillance devices, you're pretty sure that both the forest and the rooftops are out. Letting other people know where you are – or rather letting them know you're looking for an isolated place – just doesn't appeal to you. As friendly as you have been, and it is real friendliness as they've been nothing less than gracious to your family, they're still strangers, and you're remarkable enough even when you're being relatively normal.

Making your way over to the gardens and walkways in the southwestern corner of the island is easy enough, and though you catch curious glances, no one seems particularly alarmed or too curious to be troublesome. You do bow politely to those who do notice you, over folded hands and while walking, excusing yourself to them. It doesn't take long at all to reach the area you're looking for.

The walkways and gardens are beautiful and well maintained, even in the sea breezes; it takes a great deal of work to protect some of the plants from the deleterious effects of salt water. It's actually kind of nice, and though your concern for your loved ones is always at the back of your mind, for once you don't feel too concerned about leaving them to their own devices. Yes, Akari-niji-chan is hurt, but you've gotten the best healing possible for her, and you know for a fact that you have excellent warriors protecting Kiki-hime as well as Akari.
>>

So you feel no worries as you casually leap over the wall and land lightly on the smooth graveled beach on the other side of it – after carefully making sure no one is going to see you.

It's not a large beach by any means, maybe two hundred feet across and fifty feet out, but it sits on the artificial shelf that just out almost along the entire length of this side of the island. There are a few other places that are against the wall that you could go to, but this is isolated enough and far enough away from anything that you can even get some distance from the wall. It's also large enough that you don't have to worry about anything surprising you from the ocean, including any early divers, though the guide book says they're not scheduled to go out until later this morning.

You wander for a bit, taking your zori off and walking the smooth, soft pebble-sand mixture with bare feet; you take your comb out as well, and use it to lock your bangs out of the way while letting the rest of your hair float in the ocean breeze. The salt in the air never bothers you; it's a moment's thought to wash it away in any case, but you don't mind it either. Amaterasu-Omikami is just starting to peek over the horizon, lightning up the mainlands tallest buildings and trees.

[X] Just sit for a while and be.
[XX] Contact Er Yin first.
[+] Pray

For a moment you're torn, but you decide to take care of first things first. You have prayers that you've promised to a number of people and places, and these won't take up a lot of time.

You fold your legs and set your zori down, leaving your hair free and taking slow, deep breaths of the fresh sea-laden air. It only takes a moment to center yourself, and then you clap your hands twice, calling the attention of those whom you are praying to onto yourself. You deliver your prayers: Amaterasu-Omikami first and most warmly, Izanami, Emi, Rie, Hinata-hakase's temple (but not her, you have no need of her attention!), the spirits of those you've slain with a few notable exceptions, and those who have died for your causes whether intentional or incidental. You clap twice when you are finished, and feel much better after having done so.

You feel Akari, sleeping deeply in the temple on the island, and Yuuhi drifting off again, but no one else in your family asleep. That makes things easier as you reach for Er Yin through the Void.

For a brief second you feel someone else in the Void, reaching back, but the sense fades almost as quickly as it appeared, the space of a heartbeat, the barest beginnings of a breath. You pause and wait, but nothing more happens. Then you speak to Er Yin-sensei. (Sensei, I hope you are rested and well....)

Her response is immediate and gratifying. (Other than the interruption that was needed to assist you, Ryukusa-sama, I have been resting well and feeling better. I have made the talisman you have given me into a focus so that we may speak this way even through wards, though Barriers will block it unless we are both within them.) That is exceedingly reassuring, and explains why this is working – undoubtedly someone used a phone to cal them rather than relying on the Void the other night.

(I have many questions and only a short time to ask them, Er Yin-sensei, but they are critical questions.) You feel her assent, but you take some time to reassure her. (Your precious gem is safe and well, and I have been taking very good care of her. I understand her much better than I did, and have learned some things about you I think, in doing so.) She seems amused by that, but doesn't interrupt. (I have dealt with the foreigners who were after Kiki-hime, and have ensured that only the most powerful of the Clan Ryo elites will come after us – and I'm sure they too will think twice.)

Her satisfaction in your deeds is exactly that of (If it is Ryuu Ryukusa, it is to be expected) and it warms you deep inside, her trust and confidence that you will do everything you can to protect your family deep and abiding.

But now the important things....

*demon-child

I wonder what happened to her. Hope they didn't horribly punish her for her failure.

Just to be clear: the "Nekomata" option is to ask what the heck is going on with Rei and Melinda, rigth? The word "against" confuses me
>>
We really have to address the question of what she wants healed. It would be so much better to be face-to-face for it, though

This part, I remembered. "Strength against an abomination" just made me wonder if Rei was fighting another of those unnatural beings.

Damn. Now I wonder if Er Yin would have insight on what we're about to do with the blessing and the mermaids.

you consider your options carefully, and get stuck on which to concern yourself with at one point; yo'll come back to it later. Perhaps something she says will make one ot the other more relevant or important to understand.

(Er Yin-sensei, I need to know about the Mill Pond Demon....specifically. What we are going to ask him about your healing, and how best to do so without offending him. I have some knowledge that will help, but I need to be sure....not just about him, but about what you want.) You sense her assent, and some curiosity; she hasn't guessed that you might have more than one kind of healing in mind if you can manage it. (I also need to not about the Eight Immortals From Hell, the demons from China. I need a lot more, because I'm pretty sure our period of grace is running out.)

(Very well, Ryukusa-sama, I will do my best to teach you everything I can as quickly as you need me to....)
