You feel your breath catch in your lungs as you awaken.

It takes a moment for you to comprehend the softness that surrounds you fully. You’re in the bedroom to Moon Knight’s safehouse, under a warm blanket, a pillow beneath your head. Laura breathes in and out beside you, her head nestled against your shoulder.

God. What a dream.

You remember that afternoon. You were twelve, you think. And it was you reading. Or your mother, reading to both of you? You guess you brain couldn’t handle the fugue of time, and inserted a narrator where you couldn’t. Weird as hell, but at least you dreamt of something other than the Scar for once.

Yawning, you glance down at your wrist.

Careful not to awaken Laura, you inch your way out of bed, rummaging through the clothes strewn about the floor for your phone. You can’t help but be a bit disorientated by the lack of solidity in your surroundings – compared to the station, this place is warm, soft, gentle. It feels almost alien.

Finding your phone, you call the Phantom. She picks up quickly – too quickly, actually. You were hoping for a few more seconds of ringtone so you could compose yourself.

“Jonathan? I trust last night went well.”

“Yeah.” You answer, nodding to yourself. “It went pretty peachy. You wanted me to call you about something?”

“That’s right.” You here her get up, make her way across the room she’s in. You can almost – almost tell where she is. Carpeted floor, high ceiling, low echoes. “I rather interesting job has come up. One you might be interested in.”

A job? You wonder how much time you have for heavy lifting. There’s the station to sort out, and this stuff with the Triads, and –

She hangs up, and you almost let yourself collapse back on the bed, a long sigh emptying your lungs.

Ancient Egyptian tablets, huh? You guess they’re in vogue nowadays. Either that, or it’s the same piece of rock, and it’s been stolen away again. You hope not – that would increase the likelihood that Creeper is involved with the client. Though, that said, some small part of you does get a kick out of the idea of Creeper unknowingly financing you through the Agency.

You put it out of your mind and head into the living room, where Moon Knight’s bag full of goodies lies abandoned on the carpet.

On closer inspection, you find that most of the tools are standardized. There are these stark white fighting sticks that go with each outfit – two to each. You notice a tiny switch on the side of one, and push it down, finding yourself distinctly unsurprised when an arc of electricity flares up along the weapon’s tip. One set has no built-in taser, but you’re willing to bet that it’s conductive. Yours, probably. There are a collection of similar, slightly thicker items – a little experimentation with them reveals them to be grappling hooks (and costs Moon Knight’s fakey apartment a lamp).

It’s cool stuff.

It doesn’t take much to rouse Laura from slumber. While you need to be dragged kicking and screaming into the waking world, she seems almost grateful to be awake and alert. The morning would be grey if it weren’t red. It must’ve rained for a while at night, because you can taste the leftovers of it in the air. Puddles linger in a few of the cracked pavestones that dot the streets.

Being without a shirt, you have to stay out of sight. It’s not exactly hard for you, but it does mean that you can’t really buy anything. Laura picks up a hot drink and some falafels at a nearby stand while you pilfer a few copies of today’s papers. You’d leave a few dollars, but honestly, you’re not sure you can afford to.

The headlines don’t surprise you.

“MUTANT SQUATTERS INFEST OUR CITY.” “MUTANTS AMONG US.” “MUTIES IN THE RUINS.”

That last one is particularly galling. Not unexpected, though – you wouldn’t expect much else from Murdoch and his minions. You wouldn’t say you’re seeing full-blown panic yet, but most papers are focusing on the apparent failure of authorities to register you and your friends. It’s nice to see a few articles questioning how things have been allowed to come to this, but they’re few and far between. The real focus seems to be on criticizing everyone – from Mutant Control to the NYPD – for not responding quickly enough to the situation.
