Such is life. When it is a single bullet away from being forfeit, you yearn for any kind of boredom. When that is forced upon you, you yearn again for the thrill of the battlefield, for the skies, for the feeling of mana at the end of your rifle, for the mad laugh that comes with killing. The room is bare, the walls sickly, and you don’t dare approach the squat toilet in the corner until absolutely necessary. One bed, one chair. As it stands, the height of luxury.

You don’t want to think about the jailing conditions of your subordinates, if indeed they were still alive. Idle hands bring idle thoughts. Braiding your hair at least offered you solace ever since you were brought out of the military infirmary into your jail.

Of course, Lt. Ayuz’s lone knock and entrance came at the exact time when your hair was at its most disheveled. Despite this, and the creases in your shirt and trousers, you immediately stand at attention. You can’t let something like two (or was it three?) months of incarceration soften you up that much.

“Ha, Knight-Lieutenant di Heldeqi zu Bluwmik, yes. Hello, hello. Stand easy, easy, I’m no senior of yours. Hm... Have you been well...?” he trails away, and only draws his eyes away from his writing pad to look into yours for that single moment.

>>

Slow justice system, especially in times of war, and doubly so for the rights of a captured enemy.

Altough this might be good news. if they make an effort to get us justice, then they might be losing the war, and they are trying to hide behind good faith.
>>
>>43275019
>she's an enemy combatant, so who cares?
if she was a random grunt, nobody. but she's a dragon-rider, and I'd guess Knight-Lieutenant means she's at least technically a member of nobility. It's actually surprising that she's in a cell, instead of in a nice house with someone of similar rank. It probably means the wars almost over and they're losing, if there are no noble households to watch her
>>
>>43275152
You are making a lot of assumptions, and guesses, we barely know anything about the setting it general.
>>
“No, Lieutenant, thank you for the information, Lieutenant.”

The words come out harsh to your ears, but only because you had a noble’s upbringing. You’re sure he hasn’t heard the catch in your breath or the tightening of your jaw.

“Did anybody tell you how peculiar your eyes look, Knight-Lieutenant? Is that why you were raining death upon us, riding that dragon, instead of clutching your hands to your breast, safe in your father’s home?”

Damn him. Damn them all. He waits for any further reaction, but for now, you manage to hold it together.

“Well, I shall take my leave in any case. Have a good day, Knight-Lieutenant.”

“Thank you, Lieutenant.”

Lt. Ayuz lets himself out, and as soon as the door closes behind him, you have to make for the chair. There is a dull pain in your arm and your leg (the ones -they- broke) and you can’t even make a fist with your hands. Two fingers in each dead, still warm but useless. Are they even going to pay? Are they?

You do not cry, but you shake and heave from the raw hatred roaring in your ears. Those were the thoughts you didn’t want to have, and as soon as you’re done stinking up the room some more with the meager content of your stomach, you go back to braiding your hair. Doing, undoing, redoing, undoing, doing again, until there is nothing but calm.

And a hint of something else. A prickling behind your eyes you haven’t felt for two months.

[Cont.]
>>
>>43275300
i am, but knights are lower nobility in pretty much every culture where there's an equivalent. and in every culture that had nobility, you see the same kind of trends for keeping noble prisoners.
>>
>>43275317
The bond with your dragon, so fleeting, but then larger, bigger, enough for mana to flow from him to you. You grin, you can’t help it. The fools, the ignorants, they didn’t kill Srahen, and instead moved him closer to you! They don’t know the first thing about the Knights! This is good, this is information you can bring back, once you go home.

The thought hits you. You retrieve the key to the home of your line between your breast and look at it. You could escape. With but a single key and the power of your dragon’s mana.

>For Dragon Knights, magic is sympathetic. Your dragon is your source of power, which you then pour into an object. A coat will be warmer, a piece of armor, sturdier, a rifle, powerful enough to blow a squadron to bits, and a key...

>>43275327
Well they either don't know the "first thing about the Knights" or they are eager to know it, and this is a test to see we actually get enough power to try and flee if he move the dragon closer.

We could either try now, and succseed or fail depending what their disposition is, or wait more and see if they move the dragon closer
i think we should wait and see.

So we can't pump mana into our legs to make ourself faster, our fists so we hit harder, that kind of thing? Good to know.
>>
>>43275413
if you didn't want a trained killer in your home, don't take them alive. There are rules for noble captives, and it is proper to follow them unless a 'mishap' occurs.
>>
>>43275449
Anon, slow down.
Rifles have been explicitly mentioned a couple times now.
We could be as far along in development as an early 20th century equivalent, in which case our status as nobility means all of dick.
>>

just in case it happens to them. most of the stupid rules and regulations that nobles came up with was to cover their own asses if they got in trouble
>>
>>43275531
Makes sense, but apparently that's not the case here. If this situation is really a mishap, then they probably don't have Dragon Knights on their own.
Meaning that even if the rules exist, they don't give a jack about them.
>>
>>43275531
Also so they can show off how above commoners they are. They treat each other honorably, even when they're bitter enemies, because that's just how fucking NOBLE they are. Peasants wouldn't understand.

In this case, either these rules don't exist or the conflict is just TOO bitter to care.
>>
>>43275511
Anon, we're a "Dragon Knight".
"Knight-Lieutenant" could be merely indicative of our status as such. Could be the equivalent to "Flight Lieutenant" in the RAF.

You take a moment to fill up the brass key with the trickle of mana you receive. Sweat beads on your brow, hope and dread mixing in a nasty feeling. When it’s warm enough to notice, you slot the key in the hole of the strong wooden door. Before clicking it open, you verify you can’t ear anybody in the corridor, but it is thick, and a stationary guard probably wouldn’t make much noise. You sigh, take a breath, turn the key and open the door wide.

There is a guard. But you have the element of surprise. A young blonde, barely older than you, but without the years of training and none of your experience, that much is clear from the panic filling his eyes.

You crush your fist in his throat after ducking his clumsy attempt to grab you. Perfect positioning after evasion, you would make your masters proud. He flails to the ground, hiccuping and tearing up. You quickly check your surroundings, nobody in sight. But the flow of mana is drying up, you’ll have to move fast.

You grab the guard by the shoulders and drag him in the room that is your jail no more. After bashing his head in the floor until you can see the white of his eyes, you lift his knife, his sidearm (a single-shot caplock) and his rifle from him. You also take his pouch of gunpowder and the handful of bullets you found while patting his breast pocket.

The key is only the key to your home now, but you close the door on him nonetheless.

Srahen is alive. Partner, savior, friend, brother, all of that and much more. No way you can leave him behind. You move along the corridor, arranging your hair so it doesn’t impede you, and securing the rifle across your chest. You have the faintest feeling your dragon came from somewhere South and went North. Just something in the texture of the flow of mana. Just as you hit the first flight of stairs, you feel the prickle again. I’m coming Srahen, I’m coming!

The first guard is easy. Just a pebble shot out to grab his attention, then a jump on his back and a knife in his throat. Easy but messy. The warmth of his blood on your shirt cooling makes you shiver.

The second and third, guarding the side-entrance of the building, will be less so. The mana is still not enough to quench your thirst, but you can probably charge up the caplock. The rifle will only have to stay a simple rifle.

>All stealth, don’t make your escape known.

You’re shaking. You’ve tried to keep in shape these months, but your leg throbs, and your dead fingers don’t hold the knife nearly as well as they should. You send a prayer to the God-King for the safety of your bloodline, and hope he won’t hold against you the hope that some of that safety spatters your path.

The first guard dies, but his death jerk makes you lose the knife. The second one is on you before you can retrieve it. Your knee meets his manhood but that doesn’t kill him, it makes him howl. You embrace his head with your freed arms and the disgust you feel is only assuaged by the knowledge he soon will be dead. A twist and his neck breaks, dissolving his cry in a gargle. Your knee hurts, and you kick him again there. That’ll teach him. Wearing a cup, tch.

But he was head, and there are now footsteps and shouts coming from the path leading North. You’re only a scant meters away from the outpost’s wall, and there is nobody in the watchtower. You could disappear. But your dragon has stopped moving.

If you die, you die, if you get captured again, whatever will happen will happen. But you are a Dragon Knight. If any of that comes to be, it will be by Srahen’s side. You get up, run, and start charging as much mana as you can inside the rifle, slotting a bullet in without even the need for thought. It gets warmer and warmer until you’re so cl—

They clipped his wings.

They took the most magnificent of beasts, the one true friend who would never even dream of betraying you, and they condemned him to the life of the worm, always his muffle in the dust.

Srahen looks back at you, head down, his eyes so alike yours full of an emotion you don’t understand, then he is hidden away by the blast of an explosion, making what is left of the patrol fly in the air. You blink, surprised. Oh, you did that. Another blast. And another again. So much for stealth now.

You wrap your arms against your dragon’s neck, and talk to him in the usual babble, stroking the rough scaly skin all the while. He nudges you, and exhales a breath powerful enough to make your braids fly from their hold. You laugh and cry at the same time, and set to untying him from the sled.

Is it still a dragon without it's wings?
>>
As soon as you’re done freeing him from his bounds, Srahen shakes himself and roars to the sky, stretching the stumps of his wings. That vision tightens your heart and blackens your vision with rage for a second, but your dragon senses it and whines at you, nuzzling your whole body with his head.

“I know, I know, I’m sorry,” you say to him. Those natural philosophers thinking dragons can’t possibly understand their masters. You’ll show them right once you go home. That’s right, you have to go home.

“Can you run, big boy?”

He only snorts scornfully in response. You can’t help but titter tiredly at this, while you saddle up just in front of the ruins that are the only things left from his majestic wings. At the gates, blasted open with a single shot, you look back, shoot a last round, killing the squad lining you up.

“You will all pay,” you whisper.

And then you’re gone, and you don’t worry about anybody catching you, for no beast is faster than a dragon, whether it is on the ground, or in the skies.

But a bullet can.

It catches you in the shoulder, the same limb that -they- broke, and can feel it burying in the bone. Your yelp of pain and surprise almost makes Srahen stop, but you spur him forward, even if each of his leaps make you grit your teeth. Around you, spring is everywhere, new life blossoming, while yours slowly leaves you, your blood mixing with that of the soldier who bled on you.

>Take it slowly, but never stop moving. With some luck the bleeding will stop.

“Srahen, the woods!”

He follows your finger, and part the bushes before slithering deeper. Quickly enough, everything becomes darker, and more eerie. Only the sturdy existence beneath your legs seems real, for every tree seems to whisper and part its branches to move you along inside the forest. The sweat at your brow is cold, and shivers shake you more and more as the hours pass, despite making your clothes warmer thanks to Srahen.

No, it can’t be hours. You wouldn’t be conscious, at the rate you’re losing blood.

“You seem very hurt, Young Mother.”

You can’t see the source of the voice. So you don’t listen. Just a trick of your brain.

You ignore it. What you can’t see doesn’t exist. Probably.

“Oh, is that all?”

Leaves cascade in front of you. Always in front of you, despite Srahen dogged advance through the roots, trunks and shrubs. They form something. Ugly, and wrong, and you shiver again, more violently, the pain in your shoulder extending down and across your chest. Your breath is ragged, and you don’t know if it’s because of the reaction to the hallucination, or your wound, or both.

“Do you believe me better now?”

Never, never. You have to go back home. That’s all. Just back home.

“Oh, but you will. If you hear me out. Only if you hear me out. I’d hate to see somebody so bright and beautiful wasted on the likes of the High Queen. We have to make you much tastier before!”

It giggles, and the sound of it makes you grit your teeth.

“Follow my advice, and you shall meet a haven in which you will be able to sleep, and heal, and go home.

For a time.”

>>
It talks but it’s fine. You can’t hear it anymore. In fact, you can’t see much anymore. But you can feel Srahen moving, and howling, even though you can’t hear him. His scales are smooth against your cheek. You wish you could move your arms around his neck, just to feel the life of him, but it’s odd, you can’t really move.

Ha.

Damn.

You wake up shaking and delirious, and naked, and it horrifies you, but you have to empty your already empty stomach. The only thing coming out is water stinking of bile and it hurts, but it makes you feel better, if weaker. The door creaks, so close you could almost reach for it, and there’s a sigh of surprise coming from the figure cut against the stars.

Good Queen DM, do you have a twitter or a method to alert us when you are running? I will be following this with interest.
>>
You cry out for your dragon and yell at him to attack, and soon enough his silouhette blocks out the stars, plunging the cabine in almost complete darkness. But to your surprise he doesn’t plunge his teeth in whoever—or whatever—the figure is. He stops and only snarls mightily in the night’s quiet. There’s a cry and a babble of words you don’t understand and something leathery touches you, and you bristle and cover yourself with the first thing you can reach. Then you kick and punch with the only arm available, making contact even if your feeble strength probably doesn’t do much. But you’re not thinking straight, you just have to struggle enough so it doesn’t touch you, doesn’t—

“Halt! Me—ow!—friend! Pardon! Halt!” says an old woman voice.

Your panic subsides and your trained instincts come back. Soon enough, you’re on her back, her arms bent in the most debilitating position you can put her with only one arm.

“Pardon!” she repeats, hiccuping from the pain.

You press her against the ground to make her shut up. She squeaks under you. “Where are we?”

“Pardon?” she says, her voice uneven. You let up the pressure on her back, ready to slam her if she moves ever-so-slightly.

“Place. Where?”

“Home?”

You let out an infuriate sigh, which props her to speak again.

“Road, hm, of Leaves? Zayungo? Hurt! Pardon, please!”

So, you’re still in those barbarous lands. The crone cries out again, and you make a tremendous effort to steady your temper.

“Who are you?”

“Me friend!”

“Name,” you say, unshakeable.

“Lin! Lin Zayun!”

You look up, directly into the single eye of Srahen visible in the frame of the door. He seems ... dissatisfied with you. Maybe even angry.

You lift yourself from the woman, almost falling back on her in a bout of vertigo, and only about manage to make for what passes for a bed. It stinks of sweat, and old dead things, but you’re glad for it.

“I let you go,” you say slowly, “but I will kill you if you try anything against me or my dragon. Understand?”

“Yes, pardon,” she replies, rubbing her wrists. She grins an almost toothless smile when she hears your stomach growl. “No worry, have food, just clean puke first.”

You groan and start searching for a rag, but she pushes you back so softly you don’t even have the urge to defend. “Me clean, me do food, you stay in bed. No worry.”

*

For three days, the old crone bustles about trying to heal and nourish you, even if her meals are so eye-wateringly disgusting you puke almost all of them. Still, she makes cooing noises, and keeps making more food, and washes your neck and your pits during your fever, brings more fresh water every morning, and hides Srahen whenever it seems company is approaching.

At the height of your fever, a soldier approaches, and your whole body tenses, but the old woman deals with him swiftly, and he’s gone with only a cursory glance at the stinking, bone-thin figure sweating inside the cabin. You guess you don’t look like the proud Dragon Knight they held anymore.

“What were you telling him about that made him laugh? Were you mocking me?”

She makes a dismissive gesture. “Men. No understand woman problems. So laugh.”

“What?”

“Just told him truth. Sick girl with child. Forest air good, and witch know things ab—”

“What the thousand hells do you mean, ‘with child’?” you say a tone too high. You shake her wrist about, your grip squeezing her arm and pulling her this way and that. “What it is you’re trying to say?!”

“You not know?” she answers, already her other hand covering her face from fear of your anger. “The puke? You bleed last moon?”

There is nothing you can say.
