You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Your eyes snap open to find the inside of your tank burning. Flames lick out from under and all around you, blinding you with smoke and light. Not to mention the heat searing your clothes and flesh.

"Tarin? TARIN!" You cry, looking at the driver's station, which was already consumed with flame. Whether she was in there or not, you couldn't tell with your tear stained eyes.

Nonononono, this can't be happening...

Instinctively and without thinking, your hands scramble for...

True, but if i recall the Sherman tank had emergency hatches. So contrary to popular belief the Sherman tank is relatively safe for leaving.

>>43264763
There's already all sorts of oxygen in this tank. Believe me, if tthere's a fire, you bail the fuck out ASAP. Otherwise you're dead. That was one of the major problems of the T-34, poor hatch positioning. As a result, when it was hit it tended to kill most of its crew. The Sherman, on the other hand, was the opposite. Excellent hatch placement meant that most of its crew survived a hit.

Your first instinct is to reach for the hatch. However, as you try to push it open, it won't budge. Your mind races. Was something bracing it closed? Did the temperature of the fire melt it shut? Anything was possible, but there was no damn way you were letting that stop you!

Bracing against your slowly melting commander's seat, you ram against the hatch with your shoulder, which finally gives away, the built in springs popping it open like they were designed to. You quickly clamber out of your burning VT, desperate to escape the flames.

Only to find the entire world around you on fire as well. Ash and smoke block the sky as an ocean of flame consumes the ground below. Even worse, you see THINGS moving in the fires. Black, charred skeletons, either aimlessly wandering through the flames, or desperately scrabbling at Clementine's legs in a futile effort to escape this Hell. Suddenly, you feel a searing heat on your leg as one skeleton clambers over the edge and grabs you by the ankle, its jaw open in a silent scream-

---

"Roy!"

Your eyes snap open for the second time, this time from your bed. You wake up in a cold sweat, your hand still clutching Tarin's in an iron, deathlike grip.

"Are you okay?" Tarin asks in concern. "It... it didn't look like you were sleeping well."

"I'm just glad you're here, Tarin. Really." You mumble.

"I know." Tarin returns the hug and pats you on the head. "I know it's not my place to ask, but what was the nightmare about, anyways?"

"Why do you want to know?" You ask.

"Let's go find Alfie." You say. "Willem's a squire so he can learn to cope. Alfie though... I'm pretty sure she didn't ask for this."

"Understood." Tarin gets up and tosses your jacket to you. "We should be going, then."

First, you and Tarin head to the dining hall to grab something to eat. Naturally, being official nobility, you had unrestricted access to all of the good stuff. Bacon, eggs, ham, sausage, muffins, and more. You and Tarin each grab a full plate and head out. You knew that Alfie never ate in public if she could avoid it. Instead, you head for the motor where your VTs were being serviced in preparation for the journey later today. You make a beeline straight for Brick and don't see Axel anywhere. However, you decide to continue on and climb to the top, knocking on the hatch.

"G-go away!" You hear Alfie's muffled voice from within.

"Alfie, it's me." You say. "Mind letting me in?"

"Go a-away!" Alfie replies, though a bit more uncertain this time.

Anon, are you from /fit/? Are you terrified of being mobbed by girls who lust for your sculpted body? It's okay, elegan/t g/entlemen do not have to have neckbeards in order to enjoy role playing games.

But seriously, a girl hugging you or tugging your arm by surprise isn't something to freak out over. Especially since we KNOW that one of those times was part of an act to slip Roy a secret message. She also seems quite capable of rational thought, given that she wanted to meet us in private to discuss the future between our two nations.

Hess is a gemstone. Properly cut, she can serve as an example to her people of why Tileans and Reiklanders should be allies, not enemies. Think of the long term here.

"Yeah, I understand. It's not what I signed up for, either." You admit. "I kinda joined up the same reason as you. I wanted to protect Tilea from outside threats. Did I ever tell you why exactly me and Tarin joined?"

"W-well, you said you two joined up because the pay was good." Alfie says as she chews on a sausage.

"Well, that's half right." You nod. "The other half was that we were tired of the Drachma raids over the border, and well, we wanted to learn how to fight back. But, now that I see what war's really like, I realize it now. Sometimes the only way to protect yourself is to completely and utterly destroy your opponent."

"S-so he won't b-be a threat again?" Alfie blinks.

"That's right. Fight to win all future conflicts." You confirm. "Well, that's what I figure, at least. You might come to a different conclusion."

"I... I suppose." Alfie frowns, still uncertain. "It's just... Axel just gets so into the fighting... I'm afraid he's addicted to it."

If it gets to the point where he starts disobeying orders, putting himself and Alfie in danger for the sole reason of 'getting another kill', THEN it's a problem.

We haven't seen that yet, and it's not worth getting Alfie even more worked up than she is already.

Also I just realized that Alfie's a reference to Reaper from Pararescue Witches.

If you're wondering about the decor of the room in my pic, it's because it was taken in the USS Hornet's (CV-12) mess hall, re-purposed as the convention's panel room. Tangentially, I'm really hoping that the Hornet shows up in Pacific Strike. Hometown pride goes a good ways, it seems.

"I already talked to him yesterday. I'm not sure if he's all there, yet, but I'm pretty sure he'd listen to you." You wink.

"Um... okay?" Alfie says, completely missing the implication.

"Anyways, keep the plate. I can always get more." You pat Alfie on the head. "Say hi to Axel for me, will you?"

"Y-yeah. No problem!" Alfie nods. "Thank you!"

"Well, that's one problem solved." Tarin says simply when you drop back down the ground.

"Yeah, well, I get the feeling it's only a band-aid." You sigh.

"Regardless, it did help her mood." Tarin points out.

"Yeah, you're right."

"Let's check up on Bannon and Parker first." You say. "Maybe something new has come up."

"Sure thing." Tarin nods.

The two of you head over the temporary command center where Bannon and Parker had set themselves up. With the bulk of the Breton army gone, it seemed much emptier and lonely than ever. It was basically only Bannon and Parker in there, examining the map.

"Roy, Tarin, it's good to see you're up and about." Bannon says without even lifting his head up. "What do you need?"

"We were just checking to see if there were any new developments." You say.

"Well, nothing we didn't expect." Parker says. "Reik movements have ground to a halt without fuel. Lord Artois is making headway towards Tilean lines, and he should be there in a few days. Maybe even today if we're lucky."

"The thing is our timing." Bannon sighs. "We can just go at regular pace. Keep ourselves rested and in good condition when we arrive, or we can go full sprint and try and link up with them as soon as possible."

"Personally, I figure we can afford to take it slow. The Reiklanders can't advance anyways, right?" You suggest.

"You do have a point there." Bannon nods in agreement. "All right, we'll take it slow, then. Parker, any word from the Colonel?"

"Just that we're expected to link up with them." Parker says. "No special orders."

"All right, let's get things going, then." Bannon says. "Let's move out!"

You all head out to get your VTs prepped. Fortunately, the squires had done a good job getting your VTs tuned up and cleaned. You also note Willem's VT is present, though that's not saying much, since he has to go the same way you do in order to link back up with Lord Artois. However, you don't have time to talk to him as everybody gets packed.

"Wait! Wait!"

You turn to see another squire dashing up, and he slides to a halt, bowing to you briefly.

"What is it?" You ask.

"Well, there's a humble request we ask of you." The squire pants. "Some of the lords left various... items behind in the march. We were arranging a second caravan to have their things brought up to them, but that would take another few days and we figured, since you were heading to that area anyways, that you would be willing to carry them? It's just a few cargo crates, and we can easily lash them to the sides of your steeds!"

"I don't know. That's going to be a lot of extra weight." Tarin frowns.

"It'll definitely improve the knights' morale, though." You point out.

"Maybe." Tarin shrugs.

Finally caught up on VTQ after reading through VMQ 1&2. Great stuff Merc, even when the threads sometimes turned into a waifu-flinging shit show.

Have you ever considered doing an XCOM Enemy Unknown quest? I feel it would fit your type of quest writing. Random selection of squadies so you can insert fan favorites from previous quests and other games/anime, a research tree that players can invest in outside of combat; Macro element of trying to get money for research, small squad based combat where you control up to six people on a mission, a quirky researcher who you can turn into whoever you want. Trying to lead a group of people through war. There's even an ace combat element when you send out interceptors to shoot down ufos. And there's some quest appropriate art out there already.

If there's anyone who could do an xcom quest, it'd be you. I really hope you take it into consideration.

I meant to wait until the end of the thread, but I can't stay up any longer. Sorry for interrupting the quest.

"Hey, it's not like this is a combat mission, right?" You point out.

"He does make a good point." Parker nods.

"Fine." Bannon sighs. "Let's just get this over with."

And like that, your little convoy gets moving, slowly trudging down the road.

"So how long is this going to take?" You ask Tarin as Clementine casually strolls down the road.

"Well," Tarin takes out a map to inspect it. "If everything went according to plan, the Bretons should only be less than a day's drive away. Though, this is assuming they haven't hit delays, or decided to push forward early."

"Wonderful." You sigh.

"Hey, I'm starting to get some odd signals over the radio." Parker announces. "I'm trying to clean it up, but I can swear it's some kind of SOS call."

"Alex, Rock, mind tagging along?" You ask.

"Sure thing, kid!" Rock says happily as Lagoon rolls out of the line. "Let's go!"

Being a bit faster, Lagoon takes the lead as she rolls off the road in the direction Parker indicates the signal is coming from.

"So, any idea what it could be?" You ask Rock.

"Dunno. Maybe someone got a flat. Or it could be a trap like Bannon says. Only way to find out is to see for ourselves." Rock says casually.

"Usually people won't broadcast an SOS as an ambush. It draws too much attention." Alex points out.

"Well, anything is possible." Rock responds.

Your two VTs trudge forward through the forest and hills, before Lagoon screeches to a halt.

"What is it?" You ask.

"Trouble." Rock grunts. "Just not for us. Take a look."

You turn out of your hatch. Through the tree canopies, you can just barely see another Reikland village. A walled one. However, it seemed to be besieged by a ring of armed men and older pattern VTs.

"Are those Bretons?" You wonder.

"Can't be." Alex says. "No recognizable heraldry."

"Best guess, either these guys are bandits or deserters. Looks like they're trying to siege that town." Rock observes.

"So, what do we do?" Tarin asks.

"What can we do? It's not our land, and not our fight." Alex points out.

"That's cold, Alex." Rock whistles. "Real cold."

"It's the truth."

As long as we're sure this isn't a rebel group trying a daring raid on a secret Reikland spell circle/evil science facility, put a few high-power rounds in the back of their VTs. They'll cook up good and scatter.

Minimal fuss, and we can also crush these bandits before they become a threat to our forces. Key selling point in our report to Command there. Bandits are like wild dogs, they'll turn on you if you don't put 'em down.

We've got no idea who those villagers are, or the VT's.
For all we know, the VT's could belong to a resistance group that's fed up with the Reikland government.

"We should help." You say.

"Helping enemy civilians?" Alex asks.

"Well, it's not like we have to ride down like the cavalry." You respond. "Just drop a few shells among the bandits. That should get them running."

"And if they don't?"

"It's not like they're packing anything that can threaten us." You say.

"All right." Rock says. "Then you can take the honor of the first shot, then."

"Sure thing." You nod as you settle your gunsights over one of the scavenged VTs.

Both you and Alex fire your cannons. Your shots both land dangerously close to the bandit VTs, showering them with dirt and debris. You then follow up with your coaxial machinegun, showering the bandit VT with tracers and bullets. Alex does the same.

Almost immediately, the cohesion of the bandits breaks apart. They clearly weren't expecting any serious resistance, and they scatter, making a dash back for the trees while your and Alex keep dropping shells right behind them to "encourage" their retreat.

"Well, we did our part." Rock says. "I reckon we bought them a day or two."

"Only?" You ask.

"Well, yeah." Rock says simply. "I mean, if the bandits gathered those numbers to attack that village, it means there's something there worth enough that would warrant them trying again."

>Oh, I see. Hope they use that time well.

"Well, let's go see what they're guarding then." You say.

"Yeah, sure thing." Rock agrees. "Let's go."

"Tarin, forward." You say. "Slowly."

"Aye." Tarin nods as Clementine lurches forward and out of the trees. It was probably a rude surprise for the Reiklanders, to see their previous attackers driven away to see a completely new one. Again, the villagers flee, while the few armed ones point them ineffectually at you.

"Ha, as if they think that's going to stop us." Rock chuckles.

"No, but that might!" Alex yelps. "Three o' clock!"

You turn your head to see a single Panther standing atop a hill, the rising sun shining behind it as if it were a hero having arrive in the nick of time.

"I'm disappointed, Roy." Hess says mournfully over the radio. "I would have thought you would be above simple raiding!"

Aw crap.

Probably FT-17s.

They made so goddamn many of them, it'd be unsurprising to see them go missing from surplus depots.

>>
>>43271433
It's be easy to convince her if we'd actually killed one of the VTs. Physical proof.
>>
>>43271551
Better question, Does she want to fight?

From our interaction with her, she seems like the type that wants to fight in glorious battle!

She might believe Roy, if he explains but considering 'fate' has brought them together again, she'll want to settle this again.

>>43271548
Apparently their St.Charmond models then, which wouldn't they be easy to catch?
>>
>>43271600
I'm saying St. Chamonds would be unlikely compared to FT-17s.
>>
>>43271627
perhaps but their still slow VTs, we can probably catch up to them, to prove our innocence.
>>
>Tell Hess we scared away bandit and were going to warn the village
>Hess counters with the burning of the fuel depot/town.

We are in for a hard time, should have shot at that VT.
