it all makes sense

a new threat has appeared

"We need to catch this guy," I say, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Wha?" Theresa takes a few steps back. "We?"
"Yes 'we,'" I reiterate. "You thought I'd leave you to deal with this by yourself?"
"Well, uh..."

Theresa turns away from me so I can't see the gloomy expression on her face.

"You deal with enough as it is," Theresa mumbles, "and this one actually doesn't have anything to do with you for a change. I thought you'd want to avoid this kind of bullshit after what happened last time... I mean, I -still- get nightmares about what Charlotte did to that vampire girl."
"I feel the same way," I reply, "but I'm also not about to risk you getting hurt or worse because I was afraid to get involved."

Hello archelon.

Have a touhou.
>>
"I mean..."

My mind drifts back to when we watched that house burn down.

"...we can't let someone run around setting everything on fire," I say. "Someone could get hurt or worse, and I don't want people to start blaming YOU for what HE did if things actually end up getting that bad."
"Yeah," Theresa sighs, "It was bad enough having those two assholes from before after me, I don't need to be dealing with any more of that shit."

Stealing that Glenn guy's light pattern was probably the only good thing to come out of that catastrophe.

"But, uh..." Theresa twirls her braid around her finger, "...if you're gonna be helping then I guess we need to figure out where to start."
"Oh. Oh yeah."

Can't just go wandering around aimlessly in hopes of locating trouble, after all.

"I guess we ought to start with the fires?" I ask, unsure of what else we can really do. "Since that's the actual dangerous part here."
"Yeah, that'd make sense," Theresa nods. "Check out the places that have burned down and try to find a common link between them..." she scratches her head. "It'd take some work but I can probably manage to get the information that the cops've already pieced together if I actually tried."

So what, she'd be waltzing into a police station and going through their files? Even with her Branch, I don't exactly feel comfortable with the idea of her being that brazen...

"I dunno," I say to her, "that seems a little bit too risky. Maybe we could check out the scenes of the crimes ourselves first, and then work from there?"

Because I REALLY don't want any video footage of Theresa dressed in her kite costume waltzing into a police station and going through their stuff. I mean, that's sure to cement her as the prime suspect if someone sees that.

"Alright, I guess we could do that," Theresa begins pacing around. "And if we get lucky, that asshole might show up to admire his handiwork..." she mumbles. "And then I'll get to punch him in his stupid fucking face."

She really seems to be taking this personally.

"It'll have to wait until tomorrow, though," Theresa says to me.
"Huh?" I blink a few times. "Why, it's not like I have anything else to do-"
"You said that you just got that dress and I don't want Charlotte getting mad at me for taking you somewhere filled with ash and getting it dirty."

"...wait," I snap my fingers, "Charlotte might be able to help too!"

Theresa stares at me dumbfounded while my own eyes sparkle with- oh wait, I'm making ACTUAL sparkles.

"What I mean is," I say, smiling nervously while putting a quick end to my unintended special effects, "Charlotte's got that whole 'superhuman senses' thing going for her so she might be able to find something that we couldn't."
"She probably could, yeah," Theresa mumbles. "Would've been easier to hide if it was just you, but I can't deny that you have a point there..."

Breathing a long sigh, Theresa walks over to her bed and drops down onto it.

"So that's tomorrow's plan, huh," she says, lying flat on her back. "Me and you and Charlotte go exploring ruined houses."

"Assuming that she's up for it, anyways," I say.
"Cecile, please," Theresa scoffs. "We both know that Charlotte'll come running in a second if there's ANYTHING that looks like it could be putting you in danger."

Yeah, and that's just one of the reasons why I love her so much.

"But she's strong, at least..." Theresa sighs. "...and those birds of hers can be our lookouts in case anything suspicious is going on."
"Yup," I nod.

Theresa pushes herself back upright on her bed and stretches out her arms.

"I guess the only thing left is to decide where to look first," Theresa says. "Since unfortunately, we kind of have a lot of options to pick from."

Hopefully that number doesn't increase between now and when we go looking.

"W- what!?"

My entire body freezes, a cold chill runs through me and it seems like Theresa's room actually gets a little darker at the mention of that most dreaded routine.

"Morning jog," Theresa says. "Remember, 'cuz you wanted to get in shape? 'Cuz you're jealous of all this?" she says, lifting her shirt just enough for me to get an eyeful of her toned abdomen.

"Life is suffering..." I mumble.
"Yes, it is," Theresa replies, "but would you mind not eating all the light in my room just because you're scared of a little pain?" she asks. "The lighting in here's bad enough as it is, and I don't have night vision like you do."

Crap, it's almost pitch-black in here.

"Sorry," I mumble as I let go of all the light that I'd been... blocking out? I'm not exactly sure what I was doing there and it's not like I was gathering it up either.

But whatever, the room's as bright now as it's ever been so she can't complain anymore.

"Thank you," Theresa says to me. "so you'll be up at seven like usual?" she asks.
"......" I glare at her. "It's bad enough as it is that I'm going to be killing my self tomorrow without you adding to it."

Cecile likes sleeping in, dammit.

"Fine, lazyass," she rolls her eyes at me. "I'll see you at NINE then. That's as late as I'm going."

"Wouldn't surprise me if you try to convince her to come jogging with us, too," I say as my grin of triumph grows wider and wider.

"Suuuuure it isn't. Just like there's no way you two went by one of those sporting goods places to get some jogging gear for her."

While I'm soaking in all of the delicious embarrassment, I suddenly find heavy pillow launched directly into my face. Though it's too soft to actually hurt, it does end up pushing the lenses of my glasses into my eyes, which is never a pleasant experience.

Also the impact kind of knocks me on my butt. Theresa throws HARD.

"I'm not sorry, you know," I say, sitting on the floor while wiping off my glasses. "Because we both know I'm right."
"Nnnnno you weren't!" Theresa stammers, frantically trying to cover her blushing face with one hand while also attempting to stem her hyperventilating.

Of course, neither of those seems to be working all that well.

"Irene doesn't go jogging 'cuz her tits're too bi-"

And then she realizes what she was just about to say, she starts blushing even HARDER.

"Mind repeating that?" I ask. "I didn't quite catch that."

Her only response is to chuck another pillow at me which knocks me flat on my back. While I admit that I kind of deserved that one, I'm still not sorry.

"For real though," I say, remaining on my back as I remove the pillow from my face, "how are things with you two going?"
"Like I'm about to give you more ammo to use to mess with me," Theresa mumbles.
"I've had enough fun for one day," i reply. "But I -am- the one who set you two up so I'd like to know if my efforts were wasted or not."

Huh, I didn't notice that she had a ceiling fan before.

"You're gonna get another pillow to the face if you're lying," Theresa grumbles. "Consider yourself warned."
"Yes Ma'am," I reply. "I understand the risks."

I hear the springs of Theresa's bed creak as she shifts on it... and then I hear a muffled squeak.

"What's wrong?" I ask.
"Cecile?" Theresa calls out in a wavering voice.
"What?"
"You might want to, uh..." her pitch grows with her unease, "...you're showing."

It's like all the embarrassment that I'd been heaping onto Theresa has been shot back at me at once, and I cover my shame as quickly as possible.

"...that was your fault," I mumble, brushing off my dress as I return to my feet.
"You're the one who started it," Theresa replies.
"Whatever, let's just drop it," I mumble.

At least I didn't have anything super embarrassing on today.

"And now that that's over," I sigh, "back to my question. You and Irene."
"Ugh, FINE," Theresa groans. "So freakin' nosy..."

This is something else that I'm not going to apologize for.

"Irene's pretty great," Theresa mumbles as the apple color begins to return to her cheeks. "She's pretty and even nicer than my Mom somehow and she keeps trying to buy me shit when we go places."

All I can do is look down at the clothing that was so lovingly crafted by my own girlfriend.

"I know what you're gonna say," Theresa groans, "but I don't feel comfortable gettin' pampered like that."
"What," I shrug, "it's nice. And if she wants to pamper you then I say let her."

Whoa.

Would it be reasonable to ask Charlotte’s dad and the Irene if they know light-users whose powers CC could copy? That strategy seems to work well for the C.

Theresa is much more athletic than Cecile.
How many Irenes can she handle at once.

No the question should be: How many Irenes could all the other cast-members handle? I’m sure Charlotte could outlast a few, especially if she had a steady supply of catnip.
