Have you ever seen a monster in a bestiary, monster manual, etc, that seemed really cool to you, but didn't really get much love? Then post it here, and tell us why you like it, and maybe even suggest variants/scenarios/lore/etc for other people's monsters

I'll start off with the Nothic, from D&D. They're apparently wizards who failed a ritual to gain arcane insight, and were transformed into near feral monsters with an instinctual hunger for secrets and information. They're kind of underwhelming, mechanically, but 5e at least gave them a neat, knowledge draining gaze attack. I personally just think they look really cool, and seem like they could have a lot of potential.

Iknow there are campaigns are crap about them, but I think aboleths don't get enough love. I guess its the fish thing and underwater sucks in any kind of game
>>
The neutronium golem or the nexus dragon get posted to hell and back, but I was always partial to the Atata, from the Epic Bestiary.

From traditional, wasn't there a ghost megalodon in a book? I might be confusing it for a spell, I know there's the ghost piranha school. Either way, water monsters are often cool but underrepresented.
>>
>>43208499
Being underwater is just hard for me to imagine.
Its weird to think of the duller sense of touch, the feeling of water move around you as a result of other things moving, the average temperature overall and 'pockets' of cool or warm water. The constant pull of the tide on you so you have to be constantly moving just slightly, or you drift away (thus messing up the idea of hiding bodies that are KO or dead, and also tracking where dead bodies came from), The shear number of odd wildlife that I have no idea how it acts. What would be the equilant of a tracking dog? A shark?
>>
I think Thoon mindflayers were pretty neat but they got slid into one of the last monster manuals of 3.5.

Also liked the constructs they brought with them.
>>
>>43205756
I recommended this ghost bard thing from the Book of Vile Darkness to a friend a while back.

>>43208706
What are you doing that you need an underwater tracking dog?
Just do underwater for like one encounter. Temperature and tracking don't matter.
>>
This guy right here.

Voors are fucking awesome. It's like a bear, raptor, squid, and satan had a four way and somehow birthed offspring.

>>43205756
I could see these being used as a looming threat where a character learns some piece of long forgotten knowledge that acts like a beacon to these guys. The character learns over time that more WILL come for him. It's only a matter of when...
>>
>>43208788
Why did I go diving underwater? Presumably to find someone or something.
Also, the enemies could be the ones doing something, evil is proactive like that and might need to utilize and underwater tracking animal. Or a mermaid colony might be use them to track us after we get done stealing their magical artifacts because kek evil campaign. What kind of creatures would they use to attack me?
>>
>>43208499
Aboleth are my fucking jam, my homebrew buffs the shut out of them. My current campaign had my players run into an Aboleth's thrall, a sorceror of significant power. Players flipped the fuck out when they realized he knew about their super secret magic macguffin.

I fucking love manticores but I can't ever seem to make them work. The just end up being generic fantasy monsters.

The best use I ever had was having a fighter and a manticore brawl it out in a coliseum, playing up the lion vs gladiator thing.
>>
Dusk Giants from Heroes of Horror. Other than a few skill grab tricks, I don't hear much about them. Basically, the gimmick behind them is that they are giants that retain their size by devouring human flesh, and if they don't eat man meat often enough, they start shrinking to human size.

That said, I'm planning on using one in my game. Going to have it set up that a remote village is being forced to provide a feast for it every week, and along with the food, it devours the one bringing the food. The heroes come to the town, and the villages beg for their help. When they go to fight it, if it has a chance to escape after it realizes it could lose, I'm going to have it run away, and vomit up what it has eaten to shrink down in size, so it's harder to find, since they'll be looking for a giant, not just an ugly man.

If it works out the way I hope, I think I might have a recurring villain here, following after the heroes, waiting for his chance to strike and gobble them up. What do you guys think?
>>
>>43209144

Its a critter from Pathfinder, can't remember which bestiary its in however. They never get enough notice.
>>
>>43209822
I think anything after like the first two monster manuals/beastiary gets mostly ignored in most systems.

I cant even tell you about the random critters outside the shadowrun core book or any non bipedal threats in the 40k rpgs after Rogue Trader.

>>43205756
It's kind of a dumb monster, but I will forever hold a special place for it in my heart: the arrow demon. I do love the idea of an infinitely teleporting master archer, and I love warrior demons.

The big reason I love them so much is that I had a party in a 3.5 game once that was so heavily optimized for melee that they were able to just blow away stuff far stronger than them, and they had gotten very confident in their ability to do so despite only avoiding character deaths against these enemies by luck.
So I had them shipwreck on an island and had about two dozen of these fuckers with max HD, custom-made bows, hand-picked feats, and arrows of every special material needed to overcome the various damage reductions of the party members. The arrow demons had been hired by some very powerful rakshasas that the players were trying to stop, so they knew the party's way of fighting and just stayed clear of them, trying to lure them in the open and sending lesser summoned demons to harass the party. The best part was that the players split the party before knowing these things were on the island, so we got to have three separate moments of the party being ambushed by this unknown, invisible assailants. There were no ranged combatants in the party able to stand up to these monstrosities, as they operated in teams of 8 and had tons of health due to how advancing monsters worked in 3.5, so they ended up spending the session hiding in this maze of tunnels under the island. I had the arrow demons show up a few more times when the party was in open areas, and the players learned to hate them.

I felt a bit bad about it, but I figured 10+ million year old demons would know how to minmax.

The optimization arms race kind of got out of hand later, but that's another story.

Manticores are pretty cool.

For me, Linnorms. Stereotypical slay the dragon quest. Until you actually slay it. Is there a basis for their curse?

Also, Wyverns are cool. I've thought it'd be a neat story to have a wyvern that sort of hangs around with a dragon lair since he ended up there as a hatchling. He isn't too bright, but he means well, and the dragons like him well enough.
Then they get slain.
And he hunts down the adventurers

The Ker from second ed D&D always interested me. They were a kind of ghost but twisted into a monstrous form. Basically each time they attacked you they put a curse on you and they got three attacks per round.

So if you actually had to fight one you would most likely come out of the encounter absolutely drenched in curses.

I never ended up using one in a game beacuse it seemed a bit brutal but if I ever do a chronicle in Ravenloft then I might have one make an appearance.
>>
>>43211466
I wanted to make mine like a forgotten deity in a small tropical island, his lair/dungeon would be filled with loyal demi-human monster werebeasts and other stuffs and the adventures would end up figuring out he was attacking because the humans forgot a deal they made with him. But you know humans they forget those little things like gods!! You know with so many wars and other stuffs killling then.
>>
I'm not even joking when I say skeletons. No, shut up, put down your pitchforks and your memes for a second. This thread deserves better than skeleton posting and yelling about skeleton posting.

I only ever see skeletons used as fodder for low level adventurers. One of my favorite things about Oblivion was that there were higher and higher tiers of skeletons, and that the strength of a skeleton was based on the original person's martial prowess in life.

I love mohrgs in D&D for being skeleton+ and I think they are criminally underused, but in general I just love skeletons that are more than simply brainless fodder.

I love the idea of the old Ray Harryhausen skeletons that could fight against skilled swordsmen and use complex weaponry like bows. I like the handful of skeletons in Skyrim that can cast spells.

The most underused thing of all about skeletons however is that they aren't actually limited by tendons and ligaments anymore. They can do absolutely impossible contortions, and you have the option of modularity with your skeletons, i.e. replacing their feet with more hands, giving them extra limbs, and having them fight in a way so unorthodox that no humanoid with an anatomy similar to ours could replicate it. Pretty much this https://youtu.be/X5t8A0NUCrI?t=199
>>
>>43212339
But skeletons are cool why would i pitchfork about this?

Last session there was a monster we fault that was a flaming skull.

I then read about Flame skulls. Flame skulls are cool.

And yes OP, Nothics are dead cool too.

Isn't there a cleaner version of an Otyugh?

I have a dire intolerance for dirty things in fantasy, I have no idea why. IRL I have an iron stomach for gore, muck and mess (used to clean butchers bins and shit when I was younger and grew up in the country).

I fucking detest unclean things in muh ttrpg though.

That picture makes them cooler.

PCs walk into a room.

One wall has loads of corpses and armor and weapons embedded in a semi-translucent substance.
they poke it with a 10 foot pole, and the pole gentle eases into it and can be easily removed without problems.

Then a PC go to grab a cool looking peice of armor or weaponry.

The wall is warm.

A creature the length of the wall of the chamber they're in bullrushes the party, slamming them against the opposite wall and engulfing them. The wizard needs to make a STR check to make hand gestures to cast a spell, trying to speak forces him to make a con check or get poisoned.
Everyone else making grapple and STR checks to fight their way out of the wall, emerging on the other side, seeing that all the armor and weapons and skeletons that were formerly in the wall remained. One of the party takes a swing at the flesh wall.

the wall bullrushes the free members of the party and slams them into the other wall, freeing the wizard...
