Quest Start

Other students pass you as you lean against the wall in the hallway. While your eyes are downcast, they don’t sport a dour look. LIkely most of them aren’t paying attention to your expression.

After your telepathic exchange, you linger on the thought of that smile. While it is a familiar smile, even through the pleasant filter of nostalgia, and safe you know there is something new and different behind it. However, that will be for later.

There is a long and dangerous day ahead.

You are Mikage Chiba, second year highschool student age 15, and you are formerly the third woman to be the Champion of Love and Justice known as Sailor Moon after your mother and older sister. Now that title belongs to your younger sister, and you’ve taken steps to support her in secret, to help keep her from having to face the same trauma you endured when you decided to stop being a magical girl and withdraw from everyone you cared about.

You’re better now; fractured but healing as you take on these challenges and acquire allies.

Tokyo is being targeted by enemies with ties to an ancient Earth civilization with ties to your family history. Using emotional weapons fueled by the remnants of cosmic darkness, they have been creating monsters out of the the negative emotions of innocent people to yet unknown ends. To this point you believe one of their ancillary goals has been vengeance, having targeted the otherwise innocent reincarnation of the woman who was possessed in the distant past and brought about an end to their civilization and that which sat above them on the moon and across the then populated worlds of the solar system.

That young woman has become one of your friends, and through the circumstances of her rescue become empowered toward her own mission to balance the karmic weight she perceives on her soul for two past life times.

Still, your enemy targets her. Aside from a few other encounters you have been unable to delve too deeply into their ultimate purpose, and now they have infiltrated your school.

Someone at the school who is obsessed with your friend, Keiko Sugimoto, has become a monster capable of creating spiders that enter people's mouths and control them as part of a collective hive mind. Keiko is a girl popular enough to have a fanclub, being the darling of the drama club among other extracurriculars and social cliques at the school. Until recently you hadn’t really been friends, and due to your withdraw from others and generally traumatized behavior you have long been a social pariah.

This obsessed hive mind does not take kindly to Keiko associating with you and your also pariah friend Kairi Osaka. Today you have started a plan to smoke them out, and have just warned an old friend of yours who knows one of your multitude of secrets to steer clear of you today because things may well become strange today.

Presently you stand in the hallway outside of your classroom, maybe fifteen minutes until the homeroom bell.

Well, you might as well use this time to get some work done. Glancing up and down the busy hallway, you catch sight of your friends Keiko and Midori. They are lingering in the hall among their usual clique of hangers on, though you can tell that Midori is a bit guarded today.

Still, you approach the group. Midori goes momentarily wide eyed as she sees you and then gives a firm and short nod. She nudges Keiko as you close in and she smiles.

“Chiba-san,” Keiko says as her arms spread gregariously and she gives you a broad hug.

She makes pleasant small talk with you and you with her, you ham up your still withdrawn routine and use the pretext about wanting to ask about class notes. Some of the other girls she hangs out with seem agitated by your presence, Midori gets an idea and shoots you a clandestine apologetic look as she pulls them back a bit to the side. When you begin to hear the distant murmurs of ‘who does she think she is?’ and other conjectures and echoed sentiments you hear Midori among them.

You know what she’s doing, distancing herself from you and Keiko to maintain the element of surprise and secrecy when the moment finally comes. Her comments and statements are more subtly probing to the other girls. And you notice the general mood of the hallway beyond this gathering and your open conversation with Keiko growing with certain tension.

With some time yet left over before class starts, you bid a short goodbye to Keiko and begin walking the halls of the floor in general. You think you can cleanly make decent travel of the floor before the bell.

After rounding the first corridor you pass the other classrooms...but where do you wander?

You walk across the elevated bridge at the far end of the hall to the auditorium. Just yesterday you were here pilfering athletic warm up sweats for Kairi after her uniform was ruined. If that’s how far these spiders were willing to go yesterday, you can only imagine how things will escalate after this morning.

The corridor thins out as it gets closer to the bell, and you find yourself looking over the empty theater and seats. Much to your surprise in the dying minutes before the bell you are completely alone, though a hall monitor gives you a stern warning to get to class.

Somehow you’ve managed no direct attacks on yourself to this point.

As you watch the empty stage, a sound behind you catches your attention. Someone is struggling with the auditorium door from the corridor you’d just left empty! No one else should really have any business in the auditorium until at least third period.

Quickly stepping over to the door you listen beyond it. Frequent grunts and exertions from a single individual reach your ear, with a frustrated tone in desperation and agitation. Through the portal you are able to make out a quickly rambled prayer, barely a murmur.

“Come on, stupid door,” whines an exceedingly familiar voice, “I gotta find her and I can’t be late,”

Koyomi-chan? And from the clatter of the door she is pulling when the double doors to the auditorium swing in.

Why is your baby sister at your school? That is highly irregular, especially this close to the bell. There is no conceivable way that she’ll make it back across to the Junior High in time for the bell. Well, maybe if she cuts across the shared athletic field she can sneak in…

With a sigh, you prime your ability to vanish from sight and wait for the right lull in the clattering of the doors and pull inward. Your younger sister stumbles in the hall and falls with a shocked cry on her backside. Quickly getting up, she pokes her head into the auditorium.

“Nee-san?” she queries and looks left and right as you quietly stand beside her and continually refresh your power of invisibility.

She puffs her cheeks in frustration, she doesn’t have her school bag with her but she is carrying a small paper bag.

“They said she came this way,” she muses to herself and sighs as she finds nothing, “Maybe I can leave it with one of her classmates,”

With a dejected sigh she turns from the auditorium and begins walking back toward the academic hallway. As she leaves, a group of four students pass her and enter the auditorium with a long and thin roll of canvas and a few bags of streamers and decorations. She excuses herself to their silent passing and offers an apologetic bow, nervous because she isn’t a student in this school.

Your sister was looking for you to give you something, what?

It's too close to homeroom for anyone to be bringing something into the auditorium for setup, unless they have some kind of special permission.

As Koyomi disappears down the hallway, you think you should probably try to catch up with her. She’s in your school to make a drop off of some kind for you, something you either forgot at home or dad wanted to send after you.

It was probably your lunch. Lunch in a nondescript brown paper bag instead of your bento. Your thoroughly destroyed and mangled bento box. You are about to give chase and let your ability to become invisible expire when a stray thought strikes you as the four students walk down the seating aisles toward the stage below. Wordlessly.

Midori warned you that they didn’t communicate with words if they seemingly didn’t have to. What students going about a chore like this are dead silent in the morning.

You quietly utter a prayer of forgiveness for leaving her high and dry, but you know she’ll happen upon Kairi, Keiko, Midori, and Gai in your classroom. No one should really harass her, most people probably won’t give her a second thought here.

You’ll stay and observe these decorators, you can eat the tardy on your record no problem today.

Maintaining your power, you watch as they silently begin placing streamers along the edge of the stage, hanging off of it. Three girls and one boy work in concert toward decorating the edges and the from of the auditorium stage. Not long after, one of the girls heads beyond the backstage curtain with one of the bags and before long, you see streamers dropping from the catwalk up above.
>>
>>43155692
The remaining three unroll their canvas, revealing a lovely rendering expressing the quite bold sentiment that ‘Keiko Sugimoto is Love, Keiko Sugimoto is Life’. Rolled out flat across the stage, one of the girls and the lone boy pick up the canvas banner by the edges and approach the back of the stage.

Coming to a stop against the wall, the two pull the canvas taut and then casually lay hand on the wall and just as easily-

They are sticking to the walls.

They are sticking to the walls and climbing at a casual pace to an unspecified height. Rather than hooking the ringed edges of the banner onto anything, they instead both spew a mass of what you can only assume to be webbing. Satisfied with the security of their work, the two leap down to the stage as though it was the easiest thing to have done.

The bell rings, and you are late for class. Your newest leads don’t even react to the electronic tone.

You came looking for a den of spiders this morning, looks like you’ve happened up one.

Eclipsed Moon Quest Episode 107
Resume

You came looking for a den of spiders this morning, looks like you’ve happened upon one.

Two of the three students you can see are still affixing smaller decorations, the other seems to be acting as some kind of overseer or observer. They don’t actively talk to one another, merely sharing the occasional look between themselves and acting in concert. The third student on the auditorium catwalk continues to hang bright and colorful streamers.

After a few moments it appears the three on the ground and the one above have run out of conventional decorations. It is here when you notice a gentle snowfall of white threads begins to take from above.

You watch this, invisibly, as the three that had remained on the stage begin enhancing their colorful decoration with strands of webbing pulled and woven between their fingers from their mouths. As you pay attention, you can’t see any sign of the spiders within jutting their spinnerette tipped thoraxes toward the front of their open mouths.

A part of you hoped that during such an exercise, the creatures would vulnerably reveal themselves. Apparently no such luck. Not that you even expected them to be able to spit webbing or walk up walls.

You are Mikage Chiba, and you are increasingly late for homeroom.

However a sizable portion of the student body is currently possessed by shadowy puppeteer spiders controlled by at least one student who has been transformed into some kind of monster against their will and heightening their negative or unhealthy emotions to an imposing degree.

You decide to continue observing them in silence as the webbing continues to fall from above.

The one who had been playing at being overseer begins walking around the first and second floor of the auditorium, occasionally looking up to the catwalk, and catching and securing the slow floating lines of webbing to rather specific anchor points and weaving her own around it and from line to line to slowly create some form of viable perimeter web.

The two on stage are crafting something more more intricate, it seems they are hanging a nest beneath and in front of the already hung banner. Slowly creating anchor points around a central bundle and building a funnel into a suspended tunnel and shelter. As they create this work, you are given some inkling to the tensile strength of their webs, as they climb and stand upon taught strands that are barely visible save for the reflective sliver of light they catch on occasion.

A shiver catches the back of your mind as you imagine enough of these minions overpowering you and cocooning you for their grim obsession. Thier faces, in your mind, slowly replaced by something far more arachid.

Still, you watch, and make use of your passive observational abilities to gauge them as enemies. You chauk what little you learn of the spiders themselves to how they remain concealed within their hosts.

They, as individuals, pose a negligible threat to you. They are resistant to poisons and toxins in their present state, and are able to move freely when they would otherwise be adhered, entangled, or grappled. Somehow they still register to you as human, but are generally enhanced and capable of climbing walls, extruding and weaving webbing, communicate empathically or with low level telepathy, and enhancing their perception while in contact with a properly anchored web or nest-
>>
>>43162762

Loose loops and strands have fallen everywhere in the room, a few at your feet and even to you. As they four of them continue to spin and weave the once velvet red auditorium into a gray white unrecognizable space, the strands around and attached to you are slowly tightening and straightening.

You are by no means entangled, but you doubt your presence will go unnoticed much longer.

I think my thought that we might make it another day without this coming to a head will be incorrect.

That is a lot of setup. How often is the auditorium used?
..crap. Anyone that comes in that isn't one will quickly be converted and this is where Keiko's drama club meets, so I'm guessing they are building up for a grand surprise for her at club time.
>>
There's no need to panic, we can be much more terrifying when we're hungry than any spider.
>>
Considering the webs, you won’t have much time before your breathing gets noticed along the vibrations of the webbing. While you may have a few strands caught on you now, pulling free shouldn’t be unexpected to them, after all they are in the middle f tightening the weave.

Quietly you step toward the door, slowly pulling it open and slipping out into the corridor. The last of the strands caught on you as the door closes behind and pulled free. They seem momentarily confused as they slip from your sight, but quickly go about their business as the door closes.

That was too close for your comfort, more than that you are thoroughly disgusted and agitated having been covered in loose and webby strands. Pulling one loose from your pink hair, you drop it and shiver.

Still so much to be done.

So, they’ll use the auditorium for something later. The question is what?

A bell chimes, homeroom has ended and first period is about to begin. Teachers will be in the halls soon, which is lucky for you as they won’t notice you just yet as you are in a building crossing corridor.

Having stopped refreshing your ability to become invisible, you consider your next move.

Wracking your memory to when Keiko has Drama Club after school this week, you come up blank. With this on your mind you make your way toward the classroom.

The macabre state of the auditorium probably means they have something planned for today, however there is nothing going on in there officially during the academic hours of the school so you can let it sit for now. Whatever they’re planning probably involves giving Keiko accolades, or they plan on doing something to you and or Kairi-chan.

Stepping through the halls you pass a few teachers, one of them comes to a stop in front of you.

“Chiba-san,” he says sternly.

He stands a head taller than you, short black hair and a trimmed moustache. Your homeroom teacher, and he has a mildly disappointed but otherwise understanding look in his eyes.

~Oh, good morning Toriko-sensei,~ you greet him with a short bow.

“Is everything okay?” he asks, “You missed homeroom,”

~Sorry sensei,~ you apologize, hoping to squeeze a little sympathy out of him.

He seemed happy with your outburst not too far back, when you pulled yourself out of one of your panic attacks without your pills. Maybe you can ride that to getting out of this little spot of trouble.

“It’s alright, just get to your class before first period starts. I need to pick up a workbook from the office, you don’t have to stand in the hall, but I’m still marking you as late,” he sighs and moves to continue about his own business, “Oh, your sister interrupted homeroom looking for you. She brought you lunch. Left it with Osaka-san,”

~Thank you for letting me know, Sensei,~ you bow again as he passes and make your way to your classroom quickly.
>>
>>43165835

Arriving you catch Kairi, Midori, and Keiko up on what you witnessed in the auditorium. Both Keiko and Midori suspect their usual group of friends and hangers on have already been compromised. Kairi confirms that she has your lunch, and informs you that another attempt to bully her and get her alone was made. To your surprise, Gai intervened on her behalf and helped extract her from the situation without raising any hackles with his more subtle supernatural powers.

Apparently the alien boy noticed something was off in the school and wants to help, some of his friends had been acting strange and he couldn’t quite get to the bottom of it.

While you don’t know the extent of the young alien’s abilities, more allies are good and you do know that he is at least capable.

Your telepathic conference finishes before the bell, and before Toriko-sensei returns to class. Keiko is rather unnerved by the tabeau you painted of the auditorium and Midori actually cracks a joke over the telepathic connection that she thinks the enemy’s banner has a cute slogan. Kairi asks them not to flirt where she can feel the emotional ebb and flow, but you’re amused by it all the same. There won’t be much you can do until lunch period.

>Ask Gai to help and fill him in on relevant details
>Warn Gai to keep an eye out but keep his distance, you don’t want him infected
>Ask Kairi to specify what happened to her
>Focus on class for now, act normal and not at all suspicious
>Put forward a jittery front, make it seem like you’re having a bad day as far as panic goes

>>Ask Gai to help and fill him in on relevant details

Also provide Kairi emotional support.
My initial instinct would be to warn Gai away entirely, but arming him with knowledge and asking him not to take any risks should better protect him.

An excuse for Kairi to spend time around him.

Writing, probably last update. Feeling not so good.

Normally I'd object, but since we are supposed to be playing this low-key, I suppose there is less chance of tipping him off.

And yeah, more time with Kairi and more screen time for him in general. Haven't seen that boy in ages.

>>43166654
Eep. Not so good is not so good. Tell the feeling to feel better, and if that doesn't work, get proper rest & food.

You take a few moments to continue chatting specifically to Kairi, trying to bolster her mood against whatever depression the current mission is exasperating within her. She appreciates it, both your concern and your effort, and is happy that the extended matter of bullying spider possession might get solved sooner rather than later.

A stray thought strikes you before you direct your communique toward Gai Ginja. Maybe to help Kairi-chan feel even better. As you arrange for missions during lunch and free period you might suggest she and Gai partner together, that would certainly help her mood and put you at ease as far as Kairi’s continued safety.

Something unsettles you about the auditorium. Something particularly upsetting that you can’t entirely place.

-So, I think an explanation is in order,- you reach out with your mind to Gai Ginja, or as he is truly named, Estra.

-Ah, Chiba-san. I didn’t know you were telepathic,- you feel the great and welling impression of his emotions over the mental connection.

When you could smell negative emotions, he was a vast feast of empty calories. Now that you can connect to him directly with your mind, you are privy to the swirling and inhuman heights of his experience and mental state. All in all it’s a bit dizzying.

-It’s something I’ve picked up,- you explain, -So, you’ve noticed something wrong?-

He goes into a brief explanation of the things he’s noticed. Changes in behavior and a general change in the emotional tenor of the campus. Normally he subsists off of ambient love, but there has been a sickening taste tainting his usual means of sustenance.

At your explanation in response, he goes silent and solemn. He responds in affirmation when you ask if he’d be willing to help with things.

You agree to talk further on the matter during lunch break.

With that, class continues as normal. Your secret allies nodding as you meet each of their eyes. Everything goes well until third period, when you have a health class module being taught by the school nurse.

The classroom door slides open in the middle of the lesson, a student sent to retrieve the nurse stands there out of breath. A number of students have apparently collapsed during the third period music class.

Why the music class, I wonder.
Backtracking, while it seems we guessed good on where to investigate, I can't help but wonder what might have been going on everywhere else on campus.
>>
>>43172426
Does seem that the hivemind is working on big things.

My optimistic hope for the music room incident is that the spiders have a sound weakness. Beyond that, I have no idea what might be going on there.

That would be useful.

Interlude: Oncoming

The roof of the Junior High School is quiet, it has a different air compared to your own place of enrollment. There the world is old brickwork and imported architecture, it somehow feels older than it is, and old spirits haunt it and are drawn to it as a place of faith. Here, here is honestly a little bland, efficiency over character. Public works of the 70s and 80s in this country often were built with little fanfare and for the sake of simplicity.

You’ve been standing there for a while, at least since you helped your friend off of her accidental skateboard ride. Speaking of whom, you catch sight of her racing across the athletic field at full tilt as electronic bells echoed in unison from the Junior High and the High School.

“I’m LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!” she cries out in desperation below you, twin blonde tails flailing in her wake.

You aren’t the only one observing her.

Even through the reflective surface of the windows of Juuban Central High School, you know eyes watch Koyomi Chiba stumble and fall as she crosses the running track. You don’t know what they are, but there are a lot of them. They don’t know who Koyomi or any of you really are, but your vision warned you that they would hate your friend for some association or another.

In your vision, the High School was a fortress of silk. Even though it doesn’t look it now, it feels imposing.

“Its started then?” a quiet voice asks from beside you, a short young girl with long blonde hair hidden beneath a puffed hat.

Flipping your long black hair, you nod solemnly to the girl. Her name is Venus Aino and like you she is a Sailor Guardian.

“Well, it’s lucky that I don’t have anything today,” she tuts and crosses her arms, “Yesterday was fun, but I guess today we’re back to work,”
>>
>>43186222

“We’ll have to be careful, we don’t know what’s over there or what’s going on,” a voice steps up behind you with a tinge of annoyance beneath an auburn ponytail, Kanari Kino, she shields her eyes and looks to the dark clouds on the urban horizon, “And to make matters worse it looks like there’s a storm coming,”

“Isn’t a storm to your benefit, Kanari?” the girl with short blueberry colored hair asks and then chides, “If I were you I’d be more worried about being late to class,”

Her name is Aiha Mizuno. Her hand casually seeks out your own as she stands on your other side, offering a silent reassurance. She felt how troubled this vision left you, being a talented empath among many other burgeoning psychic abilities.

“Says the girl who’s playing hookey,” Kanari snorts with a smile.

Down below, the four of your watch Koyomi pick herself off the ground and turn to stare at the High School. She seems hesitant about something.

“She feels something too, doesn’t she,” Venus wonders, “It’s a worry, like when you stare at a dark corner of the room and know something is there even if it’s empty. I hope PB-Chan and Sunny-chan notice it too,”

“If they haven’t” you say quietly, “They will soon,”

You are Rin Kumada. You and the other three young women on the rooftop, the raising winds licking at the edge of your clothes, are Sailor Guardians.

Down below, you watch Koyomi take a few steps back toward the other school building. Arm starting to rise from her side to extend forward. She pauses, uncertain, before turning and hurrying back for her original destination beneath your feet.

Something is happening today, you just don’t know what.

Nice seeing the team at the ready.

Also, I think once the Scouts hit the scene we should have Midori disguise herself as Keiko so the enemy can see Sailor Sol and Keiko at the same time, albeit through distributed eyes.
Also a disguise less prone to embarrassing situations that might happen with pretending to be anyone else in our group.
If she can do that and manage an illusion of Mikage and Kairi at some point, that should go a long way toward dissuading anyone from connecting our group to any magical type persons running around.

Also, random thought not connected to anything else: What does Neo-Queen Serenity use as a power source while her daughter is back in time with the Silver Crystal?

I think it would ultimately depend on the circumstances of who he meets first and what happens in each meeting. Though I would be willing to assume he'd know within 20 seconds of observing the second one he meets or 10 seconds of interaction.
