You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

All right, we had to interrupt a vote last time due to insufficient votes, so we're going to redo things right now!

Currently, you have the option of taking a half dozen mounted yeomen with your platoon or a pair of low ranking knights for a raid against a Reikland fuel depot.

Your current force composition is your primary platoon, and the addition of Willem's VT, which is roughly equivalent in protection to a Heavy Wolverine but a bit faster.

Bring the Knights. We showed the peasants an alternative in how they're treated, now we have to show the alternatives to the Knights and the results of a different mindset. Does not mean we should force it upon them though.

If we change 1 knight's views, then they can treat their yeomen better.

"All right, is everybody ready? Bannon whispers through the radio.

One by one, you hear the call outs from the people in your little raiding unit. For now, you had a total of seven VTs to work with. In addition to your own platoon, you also had three Breton VTs tagging along. One was Willem, Lord Artois' squire, while the other two were knight sunder Lord Arwald. However, like Willem, they weren't particularly high ranking, having only recently been promoted from squire to full fledged knight. Replacing casualties from the previous battles, you suspect.

"Kessen, Leopold, you two hear me?" Bannon continues.

"We hear you, milord!" One of them says. You still can't quite tell the difference between their voices.

"All right. It's going to be dawn soon, which means the main column is going to be moving out. If want to do this right, we have to hit the Reiklanders before they spot the army moving. That means we move fast, got it?"

"Yes sir." You hear the platoon affirm.

"We'll go." Alex says simply and you watch Lagoon roll forward on its new wheeled feet.

"Are you sure you should do that in the forest?" You as. "The ground might be too uneven for something like that.

"Nah, it's not a big problem as long as I keep the speed throttled back." Rock assures you. "Besides, it's still faster and quiet than using the legs."

"He has a point." Tarin says.

"All right, Rock and Alex take point." Bannon says. "The rest of you spread out. We're going to move though the forest to keep our approach hidden. Just be wary for any enemy patrols or observation posts."

You watch as the VTs begin to spread out in a loose formation, and in the absence of specific orders from Bannon, they begin forming their own little groups. While Rock and Alex take the front, Bannon and Parker form the center. Willem's VT forms up with Axel and Alfie on the left, while the two other knights take the right.

"Tarin, form up with Bannon's VT. That way we can cover either side if they run into trouble."

"No problem." Tarin nods as she picks up the speed a little.

Your little formation weaves its way through the trees. It looked just like any other forest, but there was something... off about it. Your eyes dart about constantly, trying to look for unseen threats.

"You feel it too?" Tarin mutters.

"Yeah... it just seems too empty." You reply, looking around through your periscope. "Maybe the Reiklanders did something here?"

"Or maybe all the local wildlife got scared off from the fighting." Tarin suggests.

"I guess that works, too." You sigh.

"Hold up." You hear Alex warn. "We have movement up front."

"Enemies?" Bannon asks, halting his VT.

"Maybe. Civilian." Alex reports. "Civilians and civilian truck, looks to be carrying supplies."

"Obviously aiding the enemy. We are in their territory, after all." Kessen growls. "Shall we attack?"

"Hold up!" Bannon hisses. "Can we get around them?"

"Maybe, but it's going to add a lot of time to our trip, and there's a chance they might see us anyways." Alex says. "Their truck's broken down, so no idea when they'll get moving again. Last thing we need is a bunch of Reiklanders coming right up on our ass."

Sort of. That is the M10 GMC, nicknamed the Wolverine by the British.

It carried a gun in the caliber of 76.2mm, but it was called the M7 3 inch gun . It is different than the M1 76mm gun, which is pretty much what we've got. That gun was carried by Shermans and Hellcats.
>>

As a side note, the M10 could pull roughly 32mph on a good surface
The M18, its successor design, could pull 55
>>
>>43134597
The M18 was designed specifically for tank destroyer doctrine. That being a mobile reserve. As this anon notes, the M18 was a speedy little bugger, and that was to facilitate getting to the decisive point of the battle sooner. The M10 was still somewhat a stopgap design, albeit far better than the M3 75mm GMC, which was literally a halftrack with a 75mm gun on top.
>>
>>43134666
The M3 75mm was a respectable design and performed exceptionally well when used correctly in North Africa
The problem was commanders who saw 75mm and thought Medium Tank, and employed M3 75mm GMCs as such to great losses

>The M3 75mm was a respectable design and performed exceptionally well when used correctly in North Africa
I never implied otherwise. Even so, it was a subpar solution, if you will. Not as good as another vehicle would have been.

>The problem was commanders who saw 75mm and thought Medium Tank, and employed M3 75mm GMCs as such to great losses
This is a prevailing theme of US TDs. Either that or they weren't employed at all.

"How about we apprehend them? Seize the supplies while we're at it?" You suggest.

"Well, the chances of it being any valuable or classified aren't very high, but it can't hurt to see what's inside." Parker says in support.

"Yeah, okay." Bannon says in agreement. "Axel, Kessen, you guys head around on the flanks and pen them in in case they try and run. Roy, you're with us. Let's hope they won't do anything stupid with a bunch of VTs on top of them."

"Hopefully." You echo his sentiments.

"Okay, let's go!" Bannon shouts and with that order, you, Bannon, and Rock surge your VTs forward and out of the trees. Up in front, you see a truck pulled stopped in the middle of the road, with a few cars piled up behind it. There's also a small gaggle of civilians gathered around the truck.

"HALT!" You hear Bannon's voice bellow over a loudspeaker. "DO NOT MOVE AND YOU WILL NOT BE HURT!"

Whether the civilians obeyed the order or were too shocked to really do anything else, you weren't sure, but most of them stayed put. However, you see at least a few of them take off.

"Motherfucker!" Bannon curses. You see him pop the hatch and man his pintle mounted gun. "We can't let them get away!"

"I'll get the ones on the left!" Rock says as you see Lagoon glide over on its wheels. "You guys take care of the ones on the right!"

"Shit!" You swing right where you see a pair of the civilians making a run for the trees on the other end of the clearing.

"Can you beat them there?" You ask Tarin.

"Maybe." Tarin grimaces.

"Maybe" was not something you wanted to hear.

Clementine's engines roar as they're pushed to their limits. The ground trembles as her massive metal feet pound the dirt, chasing down the fleeing civilians like some sort of primeval beast. They're just about to reach the edge of the trees when one thunderous stomp of Clementine's foot sends a shockwave through the ground, knocking the fleeing civilians off their feet. You then pop out of the hatch and point the pintle mounted machine gun at them.

"That's far enough for you two." You say.

"Good job, Roy. We've secured the the rest of the civilians." Bannon says. "Bring those two back and we'll get things sorted out here."

"You know, this kind of creates a problem for us." Parker sighs. "We need to leave at least one VT here to keep an eye on these civvies and keep them from scattering. The moment we take our eyes off, they're definitely going to try and warn the army."

You quickly hop out of Clementine and down to the ground, with Tarin following right after you. You stride past the dozen or so civilians, all a mix of men, women, an even a couple of children, who all eye you warily. You don't speak to them and they don't speak to you. You're not here to try and convert them to your side, anyways. You unlatch the doors on the truck's trailer and pull it open.

"JESUS!" You nearly fall on your ass and draw your service pistol.

Inside the truck were at least a dozen undead troops, seemingly secured in storage racks and inactive, completely still like the corpses they were supposed to be.

"What's going on?" Bannon asks.

"It's those fucking undead soldiers!" You yell.

"Fuck! You need help?" Axel says as Brick stomps forward.

"No, no, they're inactive."

"Are they intact?" Parker asks, now genuinely intrigued.

"Um, yeah. It looks like they're all in once piece."

"Hmmmmmm."

"Parker, I don't like it when you 'Hmmmmm' like that." Bannon says cautiously.

"Well, this IS an opportunity." Parker says. "Up till now, we haven't had an intact specimen to study. Egan would REALLY appreciate it if we could bring some of these for her to dissect."

"Yeah, but the truck is busted, and I don't really trust these people to try and fix it." Rock points out.

"We c-can tie the t-trailer to a VT and t-tow it." Alfie suggests.

"Well, I guess we can do it." Rock says. "But it's gonna weigh us down. We wouldn't be able to reinforce you if something happens."

"We could have somebody two it back right now." Alex says.

"I say we just burn the whole damn thing. Don't let em reach where they're going." Willem spits. "Necromancy is sacrilege."

"Rock and Alex will take care of it." Bannon grunts. "All right, let's go. We're on a tight schedule here."

You continue on through the forest, now short one VT. However, you fortunately don't come across any other enemy patrols. The forests here were thick and the Reiklanders were spread thing from losses as well.

"Damn, this isn't good." Bannon frowns as he looks at the sky, which was beginning to lighten up. "It's almost dawn. No cover of darkness and their recon is going to see the column moving out soon."

"Well, we're too far in to turn back now." Parker responds. "We need to keep going."

"Wait, I see something!" Willem whispers. "It's the fuel dump!"

"Yeah, I see it." Bannon says. You watch his VT stop right behind a small hill and comes out of the hatch, binoculars out. "Well damn, that fuel depot is way bigger than I thought it was."

"Isn't that good for us?" Kessen asks. "More fuel means more destroyed!"

"Yeah, but there's a village smack dab right next to it. If that depot goes up, so does the town, and everybody in it."

"T-that's horrible!" Alfie cries.

"They're still Reiklanders. They got it comi- OW!" Axel yelps.

You turn out of your hatch and observe yourself. Sure enough, you could see dozens of massive fuel storage tanks, and a maze of pipes feeding into a large fueling station. Nestled up to these facilities, you could see, were regular civilian buildings, like houses and stores. Nobody was out yet due to the early hour, but there had to at least be several hundred people down here, in addition to the small garrison force of a single platoon of Lynxes.

"I don't like it, but we don't have much choice. If they're living next to a fuel depot like that, well, that means they're legitimate targets." Bannon sighs.

"W-wait!" Alfie cries. "Maybe we should-"

"That's an ORDER." Bannon snaps. "Or did they not teach how to follow those in boot?"

"Y-yes sir." Alfie says quietly.

"All right, everybody pick a fuel tank." Bannon continues. "Roy, there's no guarantee the explosion will take out those Lynxes, so you're free to fire on them if you want."

But... well, here's a snippet from Wikipedia's article on the Tokyo firebombings.

>The US Strategic Bombing Survey later estimated that nearly 88,000 people died in this one raid, 41,000 were injured, and over a million residents lost their homes. The Tokyo Fire Department estimated a higher toll: 97,000 killed and 125,000 wounded. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department established a figure of 83,793 dead and 40,918 wounded and 286,358 buildings and homes destroyed. Historian Richard Rhodes put deaths at over 100,000, injuries at a million and homeless residents at a million.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Tokyo

Civilians near military depots and strongpoints are gonna get hit. That's the sad reality of war. We try to fight with honor, to minimize the bloodshed, but we also have to accept that at the end of the day our lives and the lives of our team are more valuable than theirs.
>>
>>43136872
I remember there was a saying that went along the lines of, "If you plan on sparing/capturing an enemy, prepare to lose 5 of your comrades."

I have a feeling we'll need some alone time with Tarin after this....
>>
>>43136872
Yea, even though today we got such good missile systems, they can reduce the civilian death toll, but when the foe perposly puts civilians IN the danger zones, then they intend to use them human shields. At that point there is no saving them. it'll be better to take them out and after awhjile the foe will wise up and stop using humans a shields.

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You now have 3 FATE POINTS

"All right, all units fire at will!" Bannon barks.

Your first shot is straight and true, and your 76mm shell punches straight through the Lynx, causing it to explode violently.

However, that's not even close the destruction the rest of the platoon causes. High explosive shells fall among the fuel tanks, instantly setting them off. You're temporarily blinded by the flash as flames fill your vision.

And you watch helplessly as the flames skitter along the pipes, rupturing them open like wet paper. Flaming fuel and debris rain down and engulf the town.

And that's when you hear the screaming. Down below, you can see movement as people flee, burn, or die. They Lynxes, surprisingly enough, don't even try to look for what caused the explosion, and trudge forward into the inferno, trying to stamp out the flames with their armored feet.

"There's no honor in this." You hear Willem mutter.

The other two knights remain silent.

"I want go." Alfie whispers. "I WANT TO GO."

"Yeah, it should be time to fall back." Bannon says. "You guys go on ahead. I'll stay behind to confirm destruction."

You get the feeling Bannon isn't being entirely truthful.

"Well, what are you all waiting for?" He snaps. "Reikland will send a QRF to investigate soon!"

Last time I heard, you can only use it on vehicles. If enemy combatants just 'happen' to be in the area, then it's acceptable. Much like using an anti-material rifle to shoot 'material' that just so happen to be on them.
>>
>>43137496
white phosphorus has two purposes.
1. in that i can create a smoke screen/mark targets.
2. It can be used as an incendiary on war materiel

It just depends on the user on how it's used. Wiki has more shit on the subject.
>>

>>43137346
>>Head back with the others.

I think it's a good time to head back and decompress some.
>>
>>43137437
I hope so, I really do. Back on our homefront, the Reiklanders are sending undead monsters against our people, trying to break our morale. Blowing up a fuel depot and burning people alive? That's tame, that's almost a natural disaster. No unnatural taint of necromancy there. Do we wish that there was a way to save everyone, to end the war cleanly? Sure we do. It's because we're human.

But because we want to win, we will burn depots. We will break them, and we will show the Reiklanders that they will either abandon this war or face an enemy that pulls no punches. We accept only unconditional surrender from aggressors, and since we have no necromantic "tricks", we answer with good old cleansing fire.
>>
>>43137496
It is outlawed for direct use on enemy combatants, however its still used for "spotting" and marking targets.
>>
...So this is gonna be one of those 'in the name of realism we're gonna be brutal as shit even though there's likely other possibilities in-quest' quests?
>>
>>43137469
I didn't. tactically blowing the fuel depot means the less use the bad guys can run their VT and other mechanized forces. That is damn important, but some times it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
>>
So, let's be up front about this. We're probably gonna lose the knight's support. How are we going to react when they pull out? Are we gonna be pissy about it or just let them go?

>>43137496
Using its incendiary effect is outlawed. However, it makes damn fine smoke, and one that's effective against thermals as well. However, that doesn't mean it wouldn't be used in a war. In fact, the various US Army field manuals say that adding WP to a normal fire mission will increase its suppressive effect.
>>
At least we can say Roy didn't gave the order.

and he didn't attack the fuel dumps only the Lynxes/
>>
>>43137569

Hold up, hold up.

You're telling me that the knights who sacrifice peasants in literal waves, who give yeomen power armor and throw them into a meat grinder, are gonna get upset about some peasants being flash-cooked during a daring raid?

If anything, they'll just be pissy that they didn't get to do any "glorious charges" or fight the enemy in close combat.
>>
The bretons have a romantic sense of war. We don't have the luxury of having that childish notion. Lets just keep the civilian collateral to a minimum.
>>
>>43137646
This, you guys are overreacting to a comment the knight made. We aren't going to suddenly lose support. Christ Alive
>>
>>43137631
That is true, but the question is how does "Roy" justify it?

Did he target the Lynxes because he didn't want to be directly responsible for the fire, or was it to make sure they were unable to retaliate?

If anything, Roy's character will show in how he justifies this action, or lack thereof.
>>
>>43137646
I think so, yes, because there's a difference between willing and able combatants and non-combatants getting fried. They get thrown into that grinder, yes, but they do it willingly.

"Well, I thought the Lynxes the bigger threat." You say simply. "So, well, I was just doing what I normally do."

"Heh, good answer." Bannon laughs lightly.

"Mark, we really have to go." Parker interjects. "A response force is going to be here any minute."

"Yeah, I've seen all I need to see." Bannon sighs as his VT begins to pivot around. "Come on, Roy. Let's get out of here."

The return back to base is rather uneventful, mostly thanks to the rest of the platoon clearing the way back. You pass by several fresh Lynx wrecks before reaching Lord Arwald's keep, where you find Rock, Alex, and Axel waiting.

"Where are the knights?" You ask as you dismount, Tarin landing right behind you.

"They went back to the keep." Rock says.

"Did they... say anything?" You ask.

"Nah, they were in pretty high spirits." Axel explains. "We let them go to town on the Lynxes that tried to intercept us, so I think that got them in a good mood."

"Ah..." You sigh. "And Willem?"

"Dunno, he kinda walked off." Axel shakes his head.

You don't even need to ask the next question.

"Alfie's in the usual place." Axel sighs. "She won't talk to me."

Off to the side, you see Bannon dismount his VT and begin the slow walk back to the command tent, Parker cautiously following behind.

"I'm gonna go find Willem." You say. "Tarin, how about you keep an eye on Alfie for me? I'm sure she'll talk to you."

"Sure thing." Tarin nods.

With that, you head off to where you figure WIllem might go to if he was stressed. The training grounds. Sure enough, you see him there, furiously striking a practice dummy with his training sword. He was striking with such speed and ferocity, you weren't sure what was going to break first, the sword, the dummy, or Willem's own arms.

"Hey, Willem." You say as you cautiously approach. "Are you okay?"

"I think you should know the answer to that." Willem grunts as he strikes the dummy again. "There's no honor in putting villages to the torch, even if they happen to be in enemy territory."

"Look, I'm not sure how it works in Breton, but that's how real wars work." You say grimly "Putting 'towns to the torch' is on par for the course, especially if said towns happen to be strategically important like that one."

"Still... it's not right." Willem's eyes look down.

"I'm not saying it's right, but it's necessary." You continue. "Sure, we could have maybe engaged the Lynxes first, given those villagers time to run, but then that would have put us at bigger risk of being surrounded and intercepted by reinforcements. Assuming you lived, would your conscience still be any better?"

Willem remains silent.

>Honestly, maybe it's better you stick with your own guys from now on.

"Well, either way, whether you stay with us or not, that's your own choice." You say simply.

Willem doesn't say anything, and you leave him to stew in his thoughts.

Upon returning to your quarters, you just flop down on your bed, feeling extremely tired all of a sudden.

"Back so soon?" Tarin asks as she enters, softly closing the door.

"Yeah." You mumble.

"How did it go?"

"Dunno. Willem may or may not stick with us. We'll probably find out tomorrow." You sigh. "You?"

"Alfie didn't feel like talking, but I guess she just wanted someone to be with her, so I stayed with her for a bit, at least until she stopped crying." Tarin says flatly. "I'm not sure how she'll come out of this, either."

"Not exactly the ideal mission." You admit.

"Does it bother you?" Tarin asks.

"No." You shake your head. "See? I'm fine. It doesn't bother me at all."

However, despite your insistence, you find your hand visibly shaking and trembling despite your best efforts to stop it. Tarin notices, and without a word, clasps your hand with hers.

It's warm. And feels nice.

She never lets go until the night is over.

"No" You spread your arms and twirl around showing that you are whole. "See? I'm fine."

Yes, you are fine. You did nothing wrong and you are alive. Even after mowing down the undead, You are fine.

Having almost half your men die under your command, You are fine.

Seeing the civilians who were fleeing, burning, dying. You are...

Your body suddenly feel colder, hand trembling. You try to force them to stop but to no avail.

You did not blow up the fuel dump, you destroyed the Lynxes which was the bigger threat, you told Bannon that.

You did nothing wrong, You are fine! So stop shaking.

Stop.

Stop!

Sto-

Your mind screeches to a halt as without a word Tarin quietly clasps her hands over yours and it stop..

The cold, trembling was replaced with something warm and nice.

She never lets go until the night is over.
