Last Time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You were playing as Lathrien, your apprentice. Though not much action occurred in the previous installment you made a few important decisions and advancements. You had Lathrien and Melandie practice mental discipline to better control their newfound powers and to repair and improve their own relationship. You decided that they shall move out of your Keep and move into a house of their own making, so that they could be comfortable together away from the corrupted land that your stronghold lies upon. Lathrien caught some spies in your lands and followed them back to the elven encampment. There you found that their new leader was not highly regarded and further that he was against you and your control of what used to be a ruin of their people. Lathrien managed to convince them to hold another election and departed to avoid influencing their internal decisions. After that he returned to his usual duties until the return of Vlad Tepish and that is where the twenty eighth installment of Feral Necromancer Quest concluded

The Cast

Vlad Tepish: You, a necromancer and shaman of great skill on a quest for immortality. Your constant and insistent attempts at diplomacy with the neighboring tribes has made you a well-respected force in the area.

Bathory: Your lover and companion, brought back to life into an alchemical body. She is pregnant with your child. A skilled diplomat in her own right she brings stability and counsel to your company.

Lathrien: Your apprentice and the first vampire, he is getting better at controlling his new powers, which are substantial. The first to gain immortality among your party, he is stronger, faster and more charming than ever before.

Melandie: A huntress, a berserker, an elf. She is quick to anger and her rage is terrible, but she has learned to control her emotions better recently. The runeblade she wields still impacts her emotions, but it is unlikely to break her mind or kill her any longer.
(cont)
>>
Korg: Your orcish blackguard, he is bound to your will. He wields a great hammer and cares for few things more than to use it in battle. A creature of simple pleasures and sins he is a destructive force on the battlefield and a cunning creature in planning.

Halivean: Known to you as Hal, he is your desert elf blackguard. Fanatically loyal to you and with some basic skill in necromancy and tactics he is a vital lieutenant to your forces. His agility is exceptional and his skill with a blade and bow is significant, but where he shines is leading undead into battle.

All but a few stragglers among the kobolds followed your lead. There were some that thought your killing of the great dragon Necorax was a heinous crime, but most of them seem to have decided that by besting the beast in combat you have proved yourself to be 'more dragon' than Necorax herself. As you left the mountain the shock among the kobolds warmed your heart.

'Look! The Sun! It's Real!' they shouted, pointing at the moon. (cont)
>>
The morning found most of the kobolds in tears, if not from any great emotion then simply from the sheer amount of light their darkness-adjusted eyes beheld for the first time in their lives. You feared that they might fail to get used to it, but by noon they seemed to have adjusted.

The trek back to your hold was largely uneventful, aside from a few shocks of joyous naivete from the kobolds.

One other thing has been bothering you. Your new helm, to which you have bound the spirit of Necorax. It has been whispering to you. You know it is bound to your will and that it cannot hurt you, but the strength of the spirit of the ancient wyrm is reaching out to you, telling you something just beyond the edge of comprehension.

You arrive on a sunny day of spring. Your hold is at peace.

First things first, you've brought over a hundred creatures back from your last expedition and they all need someplace to sleep, something to eat and, perhaps, something to do. You quickly realize that there is not much you know about Kobolds, or for tending to their needs. You find the kobold that you first spoke to- you have started to become able to tell them apart by now, though only just- and ask him about it.

'Someplace to sleep, some rats would be most nice. Maybe a hole in the dirt for the sleeping?' says Vlad the kobold.
'So... Vlad. I want you to understand that you are no longer slaves. You may have a few comforts if you want them,' you say.
'Comforts? Can we eat it?'
'No, no, I mean, perhaps you would like separate rooms, or bedding, or something like that,'
'Uh, I don't know, man-Vlad,' Vlad the kobold says and falls silent for a moment, 'Oh! Maybe softer ground to sleep on?'
'Very well. And can you gather your own food?'
'Mmmmm. Rats outside very strange. Some fly away. Others much bigger than kobolds. Might be hard.'
'We can provide you with some meat until you get settled in,'
'Okay! So, where's the kobold-hole?'

>Have them set up near the human village. You want them to learn to co-habit as soon as possible, and perhaps the kobolds shall earn some self-respect living among free men and women.

'But man-Vlad. We already serve you. Of course that one.'
'Very well, follow me then and I shall show you where you shall be dwelling from now on.'

You lead them towards your hold, and as you pass the perimeter of the desecration you hear a yelp you hoped you wouldn't. The kobolds had lived in fairly dark surroundings- both in a literal and figurative sense- and you'd hoped they would be immune to the desecration.

'Man-Vlad? We don't like this air-magic,' says Vlad the kobold.

They are very much on the border of monstrous/non-monstrous peoples. And furthermore, their representatives were not at your party. I've started planning the rules updates for Vol. 2 and the diplomacy and perk system are a focus for it, so hold out a few more weeks for a more organized system of perks and alliances.

You feel certain at this point that the kobolds will not be the last to look for shelter in your lands and as more of them arrive it would become more and more foolish to have them all set up just outside the radius of the desecration. Furthermore, if the people under your rule cannot enjoy the protection of your protective enchantments, then really, what is the point of them- you are, after all, more than powerful enough to deal with any personal attack. You bring down the desecration.

'Better?'
'Yes, lord man-Vlad, it is good!'
'Follow along then,'

You bring them inside of your hold and they immediately feel more comfortable within the stone walls that remind them so much of the home they fled.

When you lead them down in the tunnels they become even more confident in their movement than you are. They navigate the darkness well and they are used to the cramped quarters. You make a sweep to make certain that no more of the horrific alchemical experiments of the previous owner of this place are here, and when you are confident that the kobolds shall be safe here, you

'Your first task is to clean this place up. Throw everything you are not going to use out, scrub the floors and look for any cracks and weaknesses in the walls. I will be sending what you need down here with my minions,'
'Yes, lord man-Vlad. Uh, aren't we your minions?'
'Not as such, no. You are free to leave whenever you want. You are free to ignore my commands if you want, though that might make me like you less. You are not my slaves, you simply work for me,'
'Uh, okay, lord man-Vlad.' Vlad the kobold says, unconvinced.

You have your minions carry down cleaning and constructions supplies, as well as everything the kobolds will need for survival and an hour later it is as if they weren't there. They are quiet and cautious and do not disturb you, unless you call for them first.

You open your mind to Necorax, and, shit that's loud.

The first thing you hear is not even a word, or at least you fail to perceive it as such with a fully opened mind. You focus and filter out the useful communication with the wyrm.

'Finally, mortal, we can speak,'
'It is strange how few spirits are enraged by my binding of them anymore.'
'It was always a possibility. Better this than empty night.'
'What do you mean?'
'Oblivion. I've seen it. Very much overrated.'
'So, what is it that you wanted to tell me?'
'Nothing much. I have been trying to break the binding and possess your body. Really good work, I have to admit.'

'Why were you bound to the kobold's stone tablet?'
'A safety feature of desperate mind. I feared I might not survive, so I left the spell for my resurrection with my priests, at the same time making sure it could not be read until I could come out fighting.'
'Couldn't you have cast the spell yourself? Or choose a more convenient way to immortality?'
'I was immortal already. For lichdom to work I would have to die first, and I knew not the magic needed to kill me. My enemies did. Ironic, really, in a way.'
'What do you mean, you had your immortality already?'
'I am a dragon,'
'I've killed a dragon before.'
'Wyrmlings. Drakes. Simple creatures of flesh and bone. Little more than beasts. We all start that way. Then we grow.'
'You... grow into immortality?'
'Is that so strange? Do humans not learn to walk? To talk? To do magic? All those things come naturally to us, so why not immortality?'
'I suppose. What are dragons? You are not beasts, for I cannot change into your shape.'
'Ah. A shaman too. That would explain the strength of your binding, I suppose. Simply put, you cannot become a dragon for the same reason as you cannot become another man, except more so.'
'That is entirely useless. I command you to speak more clearly.'
'Very well. It is about the essence inherent to the form. You feel a bestial presence when you shift, do you not? And if you shift into an animal it is easy enough to override it with your human force of will. If you shifted into another person, it would be a much harder task to override the will that the world knows must be that of the shape you take. And the will of a dragon is greater than that of any man.'
'Are you telling me that the world does not 'want' me to turn into a dragon?'
'No, I am telling you that your instincts refuse to let you destroy yourself by turning into one.'
'It is the same thing.'
'Perhaps.'
'Is there any way around it?'
(cont.)
>>
>>43127499
'Well, if your will was so much greater than the will of a dragon that they would be as beasts compared to you it would be simple. That is, of course, impossible. If your mind became enough like a dragon's it could survive the transition, though you would be changed forever, and I do not know how, for I do not know anyone who has succeeded at such high magic. Then of course, you have an additional option as a necromancer.'
'What is it?'
'Lichdom. You already know the procedure, I think. If you bound your soul to the body of a dragon you could gain much of its power. It would be an undeath of a sort, but immortality also.'
'I will consider this.'
'See that you do. Is there anything else?'

'I am rather fascinated by your kind. What did you do before your slumber? What is your relation with the kobolds? What magic do you know?'
'So many questions. We dragons are usually fairly simple in motivation. I gathered wealth, I terrified the lower races. I fought and killed their 'heroes'. We are solitary creatures and we do not interact with others, except to mate and do battle.'
'Truly? That seems like a bad way to consolidate power,'
'And to form societies is a great way to lose it all. The kobolds were my servants and my worshipers. I do not know much about them, I simply told them what needed to be done and they did it. My magic was same as yours. Necromancy. Of course I also had the same magic as all dragons do, but I finished learning that a long time before I died.'
'I've learned some of it.'
'Indeed? That makes your chances of turning into one of our kind much better. We are our magic, in some ways.'
'How would that even work?'
'Keep learning it. If your skill and will is strong enough it shall become obvious before too long.'
'I would like to speak with you often. Keep awake in there.'

make a dragon body for him, but make it the size of a dog or cat. That way he can enjoy flying and maybe getting a breath weapon if he is nice enough, but not threatening enough to actually cause problems. You get ready to proceed with the alchemy, but you are interrupted by a familiar, if long-unheard voice. You hear the panting first, then,

'Boss! Big Vlad boss dog man! The humans are coming! The humans are coming!' says Spot the gnoll.
'Explain.'
'Some humans, say they friends of yours came to us at night. Said 'run, run, friends of Vlad Tepish', we laughed at them and chased them off.'
'And?'
'Yes! And then, then there were much many many humans. With shiny weapons. And one shiny man too! And they attacked us and we run to your den.'
'You are saying that humans are attacking my friends?'
'Maybe! They tried following us, but we're fast, much much faster.'
'That is insane, we have a solid diplomatic relationship going.'
'What's all those words mean? I understand not many of them.'
'Forget it. How many? How far away.'
'More than seven. Much much more. And, I don't know. Maybe a day?'

You either find trouble.

Or it finds you.
>>
Easy. You leave your body behind where it stands and you fly out of your lands in less than a second. The better you know the terrain the faster you can move in it and within a few moments you are within sight of the human force.

And

This is not right. To your knowledge there are not enough men in the world to make an army such as this one. A full thousand warriors march towards your lands- and that is not counting smaller delegations moving in the direction of the elves and dwarves.

At the van of the advancing army you see something else that is strange. This one soul shines with a bright white light. Where the souls of other men are candle-light and the souls of beasts are wisps of smoke, the spirit of this man in charge of the army burns like a bonfire in the night. You feel it is somewhat familiar, and quickly realize that this fire reminds you vaguely, yet with certainty, of the spirit of the god called Pern.

Now that you've realized this, the whole force has a slight tint of the blessing of the great spirit. Each one of their souls burn with a passion of the sun. You get in closer. You hear their talks as whispered prayers.

'The dawn comes for mankind and its light shall banish darkness.' Those words, and many variations thereof come from several people, priests you realize, leading the men.

There is a commotion in the ranks. They are eventually brought to order, but you have sown some seeds of fear among their ranks. Good. That is what this exercise was about.

You return to your body. This entire exercise took you no longer than ten minutes total.

'Lathrien! Lathrien! Get over here and bring Melandie right the fuck now!'

You meet up.

'There is a great force advancing on our position. Furthermore, they will assault all our allies for no more reason that they are our friends. Go, warn the dwarves and your tribe.'
'Shit, Vlad, what?'
'Do it!'

The elves rush away. It is now time to see to your defences.

Go all out. Also use illusionary army when we fight to decrease their morale and trick them into seperating
>>
You have at least twelve hours. Storm of Elements is shorter range, but the weather rituals absolutely would work.

You begin by evacuating the village. It is none too large, and so it takes but minutes to get everybody inside.

You spend a long time carving totems. You have been doing it off-handedly whenever you had some spare time, of course, but at the same time you need a LOT. Fear, paralysis, plague, hell any spell you know you put inside a totem and leave out somewhere on the way of the advancing force. It is unlikely to kill more than a few, but their morale should be destroyed by the time they get here.

You sit and start the miserable weather. Every step the army of Pern takes in your direction shall be a torment to them. Every man that makes it here shall be a wreck with barely the strength to hold his sword. You will not be beaten by mortal men.

It is a few hours into the ritual that you feel a tap on your shoulder. You jump, and turn to see Lathrien. You look behind him and see Melandie is there as well. As are the entire tribes of dwarves and elves.

'We could not think of any other way to protect them.' Say Melandie and Lathrien at the same time. Amythrien, the craftsman, seems to have become the new elder of the elves.

And it is both of their entire tribes. Those too young to wield weapons and those too old. Craftsmen and gatherers. Apprentices with magic enough only to prestidigitate.

There should still be time to talk. You should have slowed the enemies down.

>Alright, we are all here. Let us go inside and plan our defence.
>Sigh. Get inside with your squishy mortal parts and let me deal with this shit.
>If we are taking a stand, let us all take a stand. Send for the kobolds and the gnolls to join the talks.

>yfw when there is no good art for tribal-level fantasy battle planning among elves, dwarves, gnolls, kobolds, humans and a necromancer, then go through your folder hoping to find a replacement for ten minutes and fail.

You bring the leaders of each group in the hall that used to be the temple proper. When you ask kobolds for their leader, they all stare at you blankly until you point at Vlad the kobold and motion him to follow.

'Thank you, Karist, and of course, there is work enough for all of you. First of all and most importantly I am going to need to see everyone capable enough at magic to use it in battle. Send them in here after the talk is finished. Magic will be of paramount importance in our position.'
'We have a dozen or so mages that could cast under pressure,' says Amythrien. That is... a lot more than you expected.
'Oh! Oh! Vlad Tepish! Vlad Tepish! One bitch of pack learned to burn things like old big-boss dog. I'll send her in later.' Spot says.
'Good. Furthermore, Lathrien and Melandie shall both be leading skirmishing forces. They shall leave before their force at full arrives. I shall need volunteers to go with them. They must be your best scouts, or else they shall be but a burden,' you say
'You mean what, lord man-Vlad?' Vlad the Kobold says
'I need people that can move quietly.' you say.
'Oh, right! Well, there are six tens of kobolds that could sneak up on rats in the tunnels.' Vlad the Kobold says.
'Truly? It is a good number, send them with Melandie and have them obey her like you would me.'
'That all sounds fine, but we are still badly outnumbered. Have you no other allies to call on?'

>'It is not about having allies. You are here because you were in danger and I do not leave my friends to die. By extension, I shall not be calling on more of my friends to risk death.'

'That is good to hear. And I am certain the bears will be willing to help, if the proposal is worded correctly.'
'Sorry, and I am not truly a warlord, and so I do not know. What are our chances of success.'

Shit, you do not have time for this, and you do not have to worry about any spies in your ranks or anything of that nature. You call everyone of any relevance inside.

Lathrien, Melandie, a dozen more elves, a gnoll and a few humans are in the room with you.

You start with the mages.

'Which one of you has direct, destructive magical spells?' you say. One elf, the human shaman you saved so long ago and, of course, the gnoll pyromancer raise their hands.

'Demonstrations, please.'
'Howhard?' the gnoll barks.
'Full power, at that wall over there.'

The three cast. The shaman does a rather simple bolt of lightning. You've heard it's a simple spell, but you were never one to finesse the tiny specific spirits you know lightning storms are made out of. The elf doesn't cast anything visible, but a section of the wall starts rapidly disintegrating. Finally, the gnoll throws a pretty basic, if impressive fire-ball.

'Very well. If there is anyone here skilled enough in illusion to aid the guerilla forces with their spells, follow Melandie. Everyone else, support these three in whatever way you can. You, gnoll, take this staff. It should help you focus your power. Listen to what the spirit inside it tells you.'
'Grr.'
'Was that a yes grr or a no grr?'
'Grryes.'
'Good. Now, Lathrien, you will be going out on your own. Kill someone, raise them, disappear. Rinse and repead.'
'Yes, Vlad Tepish,'
'Melandie, similar story, except for the going alone and the bringing them back from dead parts. You will have any number of expert kobold sneaks with you. As many as you think is feasible while still staying hidden.'
'Yes, Vlad Tepish.'
'And keep in control.'
'I will, Vlad Tepish.'
'Good.'
'Vlad Tepish?'
'Yes, Lathrien?'
'I could bring them back as vampires. It'd take a little longer to raise them and I could make fewer, but they'd be stronger than my basic minions. And a whole lot quieter.'

>Sure thing, Lath. (cont)

27! Advanced success!

They shall not rest easy this night. More importantly, you have slowed them down enough that they have to break for camp this night. You've bought time for your allies to arrive and time for your hit-and-runners to do damage.

Hell, you might even have time to get some sleep before this is over. You do not let up as the darkness falls over the camps of the god of sun. In the end, you sleep for little more than an hour, battering the enemy forces with the elements for most of the night.

You need time to rest now, lest you risk overcasting during battle. Your new fancy rune-crafted armor extends your magical stamina, but there are limits to even that power.

Wait, did the bump limit on teeg got increased while I wasn't looking?

You were harsh with your allies last night. Worried that they might not fully understand the dangers you would be facing this day you might have insinuated that they were all going to die. You go to find them, and find them you do in what used to be a garden. Your desecration spell has left most of the plants dead, but the stonework is still beautiful and the view of the tree-line is clear here.

'Vlad Tepish, any news?'
'Well, I did manage to slow them down enough that they had to camp. They did not sleep easy last night.'
'Good. Shit, all this waiting around is making me real fucking antsy.'

You keep up a casual chat for several minutes. Then you hear, just barely the rush of nearly thirty pairs of feet, running as close to absolute silence as such a group might. They are bloodied, but there is too much blood on them to be entirely theirs. It is Melandie and the kobolds. She turns, lets loose a final arrow and runs towards you.

'You're gonna have some company real fucking soon, Vlad.'

And so it is. Less than five minutes after she says so, you see shadows among the trees. One by one, men, armoured in simple leathers, but wielding metal weapons one and all start slowly advancing towards your position.

In the very van of them, there is one man in blazing steel full plate. He wields a sword, as long as he is himself. He has a stern look on his face- convinced of his own right and the falsity of your cause.

They stand there, ready to charge. Your allies retreat inside. You gather your undead towards you.

And then it begins.

And here concludes the twenty ninth installment of Feral Necromancer Quest. You gain 3 exp for a total of 7, Lathrien and Melandie get 2 exp each for a total of 4 each.

Shamanistic Magic 9

Once we get this out of the way, can we try and increase our draconic magic.
We've a dragon that has mastered the magic. Than we can literally have on our head, we can get help and learn what comes next and what to focus on. He should be able to give us pointers, up until at least a certain point.
>>
>>43131909
That's the plan, the more levels in dragon we get the stronger everything else gets. It augments all our other magic
>>
You have gained Shamanism 9! You have maxed out shamanism and Draconic Magic shall advance as your primary school from now on!

You have learned Dominate Land ritual: With this relatively brief ritual you take control of all of the spirits within a mile radius. Not a drop of rain falls without your permission, not a leaf shakes in the wind without your say. You control all of the spirits in the area for as long as you can keep your focus. This includes weather, animals, bodies of water, plants and other elemental spirits that might be in the area.

Shamanism/Necromancy combo! Raise Treant!

New Minion type: Treant Cost: 10 units. By channeling vast amounts of necromatic energy and shaping the spirit and form of a great tree with shamanism you can create an undead treant from a large enough tree. A massive, brutish creature, a treant is near-impossible to bring down without specialized weaponry or a massive numbers advantage. Even then the creature is going to take many enemy combatants with it.

Bonus: You can expend 5 further units of control to make the treant your blackguard. Unlike conventional blackguard, as this is a creature wrought entirely by your magic it cannot be unbound for a reduction of the cost, but it retains all other benefits of the casting.

Immortality Option Unlcoked: Reincarnation. Incompatible with currently locked in immortality option.

You have 1 spare point of experience

>Dominate Land ritual
Holy shit. Would this work on Pern? Regardless we could use it to have all the spirits attack him

>Raise Treant
And now we've got a solution to that massive army.

Fucking hell those two might actually save us.
>>
>>43132044
Then we should throw all our mooks at the army and use the time to raise treants

Actually, unless you really want any specific stat/skill increase I will be planning out Melandie's berserker advancement between sessions too, so leave me to it for now.

Go for it. Thanks for running

sounds good.

Guys how about Enchantment 2?
Since we have the point for it? Should help when dealing with spirits trying to fuck with our mind. And combat against it.

Mages are OP as fuck in this setting.

I love Vlad.

I really fucking do.

He's so fucking bullshit powerful it's insane, even more insane when you take into account that it hasn't even been half a decade, but he's so fucking nice and earnest to strangers and people that don't naturally trigger his paranoia, and he's the first motherfucker to stand up to protect those he considers his friends and allies.

All of this while primarily being a necromancer and everyone automatically thinking that's a bad thing.

He's pretty great, one of the true /tg/ characters.
