You speak softly, letting her hear the concern in your voice, not just for Akari, but for her as well. “Kasan. Kasan, listen to me.” Her wide, frightened eyes look into yours, sky blue in a face more pale than even her Ainu heritage makes it. “We need your help. Kiki-miko-chan and Yui-niji-chan can heal Akari, but they can't do it easily. To heal her they would have to hurt her terribly just to be able to start.” Kiki inches back away from you, and you let her. She's not out of grabbing range yet, but another foot and you won't be able to grab her because all that's keeping Akari-chan from fairly heavy internal bleeding is your power.

It won't kill her, but it will complicate many things.

Her eyes flick at the unconscious form of Hebiki Akari, and the conflict shows all over her face. You touch her face and she whips her head to look at you, the panic in her eyes saddening....right along with the bolt of anger directed at those whom you will make pay in blood and pain for what they've done. The Colonel was only the first. She doesn't see that, only your gentle sapphire eyes and understanding. Because you DO understand. This is a nightmare come true; she'll have to hurt someone to allow people to do medical things to them. You have to separate her fear from the reality, and it's incredibly hard when the fear is based on something else real.

I've seen you with her, how you talk, how you play. I heard you both singing and watched you dance in the kitchen while cooking.” Her eyes are starting to well up.

“But....I don't want to....I could hurt her worse, Ryu-chan! I've never used my power for anything like this except in practice!” Kiki's voice is panicky, but she isn't hiccuping or stuttering, which are good signs you think. “I mean, I know what to do in theory but....all the blood, and it will hurt her....”

Kiki looks at you uncertainly, but she's on that razor edge of decision; you don't need water eyes to tell you how delicate the situation is.

Your other hand remains around Akari's wrist, keeping control over her blood. If it were anyone else, anything other than a Stone dragonette, you wouldn't need to keep such strong concentration. Then you bow as low as you dare, half kowtowing. “Please forgive this cruel lizard for her temerity, Kiki-hime. If there were any easier way, any other less destructive way, I would chose that instead. But there is not.”

Kiki-hime's breathing quickens as she watches you apologizing, and you close your eyes, speaking softly. “We can wait for a small amount of time, if you must consider this more carefully, kasan,” you murmur. Sitting up to look at her, and coiling your tail entirely around your legs so that you don't betray any emotions with thumps, wriggles, or movements, you look into her frightened, worried blue eyes. “But do not take too long, hime, please,” you ask with gentle confidence.

It does occur to you that you could have Yuuhi-chan use Ghost Fire to open a wound in Akari's body, but you're not entirely sure how it would heal, or what it might do to the child your harbinger carries for you.

She sits silent for another moment, her hand on her belly, her thoughts closed to you. By your choice, not hers. You meant it when you said you would not force her to do this. When she speaks it is softly, and there is the waver of uncertainty, but it's inevitable, really. “You will have to show me what to do, ottosan.”

You nod slowly. “Inau-kun will help you in this, more than I will. I can't use my hands to help you, only guide you by voice, Kiki-hime.” She looks at the oozing wounds along your sapphire hand, and then the hand that gently grasps Akari's wrist. “You ~can~ do this, beloved. Akari needs you.” Your tail slides yup behind her and you write the kanji for 'Absolute Trust' on her back, which makes her smile uncertainly.

You slowly turn to face Akari, while Yui-niji-chan scoots aside relief evident in her expression. Kiku-chan doesn't move, continuing to pray. Inau quickly steps over to guide Kiki-hime to the side where Kiku sits, and Yui joins you. Yuuhi ducks her head to you, almost a bow of sorts, acknowledging a victory in a fight you didn't really want to have. Kiku-chan takes a hairpin of wood from ~Nowhere~ And Inau guides her through forming it into the proper tool for the work – a small, thin-bladed scalpel.

“Inau-kun, I want to to show Kiki-hime exactly what to do when Yui-niji-chan finishes explaining what needs to be done. Kiki-hime....if you start to feel sick, or if you need to stop, tell me right away please. We only need your help a little at the beginning, and a little at the end.” This last part prompts Yui-niji-chan to look at you in confusion. “Sutures,” you explain and her eyes brighten.

“That's incredible, aniki! She'll heal very quickly with that!” The concept probably wasn't in much use by her original family – oni don't usually bother with such things. You nod and start telling Yui and Kiku precisely what is injured, in what way, and where. “Liver, left lobe, two torn places. Pancreas, lower, center, tearing, lacerations. Most of the damage is in the pancreas, but the liver is badly bruised as well.”

Yui-niji-chan takes up the thread. “What that means is that we need a cut here, and here, almost opposite each other. It has to be through the skin, but you can go between her muscles here and here.” Kiki-hime looks pale, but nods, her teeth tightly clenched. “You have to cut deep enough to bypass the muscle, and then you have to open a very thin interstitial membrane.” Kiku-chan indicates the places to cut by tracing them with the paper-wrapped and bejeweled tamagushi stick she hplds in one hand; the two places glow faintly, each four inches across.

You idly wonder if it might be worthwhile to make Yui-chan take medical classes; she certainly seems to know enough to ace them. A licensed doctor might prevent a lit of issues later.

Kiki-hime looks at Yui with concern. “Do I have to....t-to t-t-ouch her...?”

Inau-kun shakes her head. “No, Kiki-hime. You won't have to do anything but guide the knife. Your husband and I will take care of it all.”

You smile reassuringly, and lower your head, praying to the Sun and the Earth that everything will go well for your wife, your best friend, and your healers. Then you also address one prayer specifically to Akari-niji-chan's guardian devil, Nikne Kamuy. Because of him, your best friend survived a fight that could have ended with you both dead in a forest. Then you focus all your power in keeping your best friend's blood for going anywhere but her soft tissues.

Inau-kun pulls several pieces of colorful paper out and layers them one atop the other. Two are thick construction paper, and four are delicate foil-backed origami. “Without feeling the paper itself, I want you to draw the scalpel along each piece of paper, in a simple, straight line. Just press hard enough to feel the paper part through the scalpel. You will feel what I mean when you try it.” You bite your tongue; she needs this practice, and Inau-kun does know what she is doing. Huntress, but also mid-wife. The similarity between dressing a deer and performing a cesarean section is closer than most people think.

Obediently, Kiki-hime performs the task, and Inau-kun corrects her twice, once on the angle of the knife, and once on the smoothness of the cut. Here Kiki-hime's attentiveness to instruction and need to perform well work for you, rather than against you, and in five more tries she can cut through one piece of paper, or three, as she needs to. “Kiki-hime was on the School President's listing every year,” you mention to Inau-kun, which draws a look of surprise from Kiki-hime. Kiku-chan smiles faintly in pride even as she blesses Akari's silent, still form with the tamagushi.

As much as you'd love to use Water eyes, Akari's body resists your power too much; you need every bit of concentration to prevent her bleeding when Kiki-hime uses her vulnerable element to begin the surgery.

She won't feel it, and you won't hurt her.” Kiki nods, her face a mask of concentration and strength, though you can see in her eyes the fear, hidden away for the moment. “The way inau-kun layered the paper, is exactly how Akari-chan's skin is layered, even to the thicknesses. It will feel only slightly different, more like cutting tofu than paper, but it is otherwise exactly the same.”

“Yes, Yui-niji-chan?”

“You can feel the insides of our bodies? Like how it's shaped and everything?” Her voice is a little weird and you glance at her. She almost looks ill.

“....yes? Blood is everywhere in the body, Yui-niji-chan, except the brain and the solid bone, and I can feel all of it. It's almost like salt water, so I'm even more capable of it than my sister dragonettes.” You smile at her consternation.

“Well, if it's aniki, it can't be helped, but that's still stupid weird,” she mutters under her breath. You start to say something but Kiku-chan lightly touches Yui with her tamagushi and you concentrate on your own job. Inau-kun lightly positions Kiki-hime's hands and the scalpel at the correct angles and poses, while Yui frames the first glowing line on your harbinger's belly with both of her hands, isolating that spot for your wife to focus on, which you silently commend her for.

Kiki-hime focuses all her attention on that spot, the meditation techniques Er Yin-sensei has been teaching her apparently helping keep panic and fear at bay. Inau-kun calmly whispers to her, easing her fears further, helping her concentrate. “Kiki-hime....remember that you earned those listings yourself, with your skill and concentration. This is just the same. It is a test, and nothing more,. You aced them all. I remember all of the scores. I remember everything.”

At first you fear you said the wrong thing, as she tenses....but then she seems to relax, her heart beating a little slower. “I did. I can do this too. It's just one more exam.” You nod solemnly, and she makes the first incision, her hands steady, precise. As you promised, there is no blood, no reaction other than soft, slow breathing from the patient.

“Very good. There's the next layer.” You smile as Inau takes your cue and refers to the body of your best friend clinically, ignoring the actuality in favor of an illusion. Kiku-chan marks the place to cut with her tamagushi, but doesn't touch the tip of the rod to the open flesh, wary of contamination. To her stick, not to Akari. Another slow, precise cut, and the muscle parts to reveal the soft pink and grey flesh inside your lover. A final, more careful cut and the thin membrane covering that parts easily.

Inau murmurs softly, “Very good. Now here....” The process is repeated, Yui framing the glowing line on Akari's belly, and four strokes of the knife to reveal violet-red flesh and pinko-grey tubing. It's all you can do to keep the wounds from oozing blood, even with your power as strong as it is. The cuts being made by an element Akari is weak to, combined with her resistance to your power, makes things difficult.

Kiku cauterizes the wounds in the pancreas with precise, careful puffs of breath and will, while Yui uses, of all things, super-glue to put the torn organs back together. You only have to redirect their attentions once or twice, your awareness of exactly where the torn blood vessels are invaluable to them. It is Yui who uses silver needles and electricity to seal the liver injuries, and once more super-glue to hold the organs together.

“Because it's non-elemental in nature, her body will accept it and not reject it. If anything, a Stone dragonette would treat it like a Stone oni's body, like minerals that it can absorb.” you immediately add that to your list of shopping items.

Once more, Yui frames the open wounds, while Kiki-hime makes careful stitches with cotton thread and a supremely sharp wooden needle as Inau directs her. On the outside of the body, exposed to air the super-glue would flake away and the more flexible skin would work against it. But the vegetable based thread and wooden needle sides through Akari's skin easily, and while the pinholes left will ache fiercely, the wounds themselves, being sealed, will heal much faster than left alone.

You slowly release your power, and feel the blood oozing slowly into the gaps of the cuts, but in a natural and normal manner. More importantly, none of the deep injuries bleed at all, and you can feel the scarring will be minimal.

You gesture to Yui and Kiku to remain where they are, and then stand up, moving to where Inau-kun is speaking softly with Kiki-hime, reassuring her she not only did an excellent job, but she's helped Akari immensely. Kiki-hime's facade of control has broken, though, and you can see that Inau-kun's kind words aren't really reaching deeply enough to matter. You nod to her, and Inau-kun walks over to Yuuhi-chan, who smiles up at her and starts talking softly but animatedly.

You settle down next to Kiki-hime, and wrap your tail about her back, and trace the kanji for 'love' along her back. “Are you all right, kasan?” you ask softly, knowing that she isn't at all. But she's a woman, and so are you, so there isn't the insult or loss of face to worry about. Even as an aristocrat, she is not above the connection that Japanese women are allowed that men cannot allow.

She starts to nod, but her eyes well up, and tears start to fall. Before she can start to sob or cry in earnest, you are there, taking her into your arms, holding her close. You don't say anything, only hold her as she struggles between horror and terror. You stroke her hair, her horns, singing softly to her, a lullaby your sister taught you.

To your surprise you are not left alone; Yui-niji-chan shows up first, going to her knees behind Kiki-hime, and wrapping her arms around the young woman's waist (VERY gently). “Thank you for helping my girlfriend, princess,” she whispers, her voice thick with emotion. You feel Kiki-hime stiffen in surprise, not so much at the hug as the words spoken as they are meant.

She abruptly stops as Kiku-chan looks down at her from behind Yui, with Yui now kneeling seiza and looking up at Kiki-hime as you hold her in your lap. “You continually surprise me with your strength and talent, Kiki,” she says, dropping all formal address in favor of the traditional and more intimate first name use for a younger sibling. Your own eyes widen as she bows deeply to Kiki-hime. “Please accept my heartfelt thanks for assisting my fellow warrior in her time of need.”

Kiki-hime isn't the only one too stunned to say anything; you're a little shocked as well.

Inau-kun smiles and walks over, sitting next to Kiki-hime. “I did not say anything to any of them, a you asked. They all feel this way on their own. You did not cause Akari-sama any harm or pain at all....and everyone knows it.” You restrain your temper, which is as usual directed at the monsters who wounded your wife's heart and mind so badly that even the kindest of acts has become nothing less than torture in eyes.

The first hint that you're not doing so well at hiding that is the look of alarm that crosses Kiku-chan's face – real alarm, not some controlled facade to hide her alarm.

Yuuhi didn't entirely surprise you coming up behind you, no, but her effective and somewhat brusque method of getting you out of there did kind of surprise you. Not that she was actually that brusque – she was being very careful not to put you in any kind of strangle-hold or choke-clutch. Not that such things work very well on you in the first place since you have a few ways of avoiding the injuries and difficulties such things cause.

Nevertheless you let her take your hand and help you to your feet, but you don't let her lead you out into the lawn. “I'm fine now, Yuuhi-chan.”

She lets go of your right hand and turns to face you. “No, you aren't, Master.” You blink in surprise. “You're in terrible pain, and very angry, and you've caused your wife pain in the effort to save your servant. You are trying to control too much, after terrible fights with monsters and people you once liked and killing your teacher.” You are never underestimating Yuuhi's understanding of situations again. She seemed to have plucked that last piece of information out of thin air.

“You need to release your pain and anger somehow.” Yuuhi-chan gestures with her nodachi and a barrier goes up, covering the entire courtyard – which is interesting because you weren't even aware someone could create an off-centered Barrier in the first place – you and she are still on the steps of the courtyard, no-where near the center.

You block the end of her sheathed nodachi easily as she sweeps it down towards your head; you take a step back and block the sweeping upward gut shot of the handle just as easily as Yuuhi whirls the sheathed weapon like a staff rather than a sword. Her leg sweep is easily dodged – but to your surprise she delivers a powerful blow to your solar plexus with the handle of her sheathed weapon, knocking you back a yard or so in the air, though you naturally land on your feet. You catch your breath almost instantly; that's one weakness you shored up very carefully as a child. She's much faster than you anticipated....freakishly so.

You stand up and look at Yuuhi-chan....to your shock resize she's not in a Japanese stance for any sort of weapon technique at all – she's in a Shaolin stance, one palm held out to you and the makeshift bo-staff behind her back at an angle matching her long stance. “You have forgotten humility, Master, and you have not considered the consequences of ignoring your pain and anger for so long. If you must release your anger, let it be with someone who understands what it means and how it feels!”

[X] Well, when she's right, she's right; you'd rather burn off steam a fun way....but fighting is fun too!

You would have thought that killing the enemy would have helped you burn off some of this anger, this outrage and pain for your loved ones, but you really hadn't considered one important fact. When you are on a mission, there isn't anything personal about it at all, and that means you don't have any feelings one way or another for the enemy. Mostly, they're just an obstacle to be removed, and nothing more, or less. So any therapeutic aspect to it is lost in the simplicity of dealing with logistics and effective use of your skills.

She's right; you've been dealing with this anger for a long time, and not really very well.

You give her the traditional Chinese salute. “Yuuhi-chan, please forgive this stupid lizard for her errors....I would rather deal with my anger in a way more pleasant....”

You concentrate, concentrate hard, and imagine your natural, normal body. To your surprise, Matagama-no-Shitoki reacts to your wish and assists you, helping you suppress the transformation into Horobi's true form. It huts a little, but the kami of your amulet locks you in your natural form. You sweep your hair back and take up a Dragon Stance, clawed hands shaped like claws and presented to your enemy, half defense, half threat. And rather than concentrate on the weaknesses of her stance, use Water Eyes, or let your mind settle into any number of semi-meditative combat states, you let your anger boil over: your eyes erupt with shimmering blue light, and your heart pounds hard in your chest. Fury, righteous fury radiates from you as light from the sun, though not entirely that literally.

From what she's seen so far, it mostly depends on if Kiki actually expresses an interest or not. Ryukusa has noticed that Akari knows, and is mostly amused by it, as well as finding it endearing.

Ryukusa had to deal with Kodachi, who played a fundamental role in her childhood, then the warriors of Clan Ryo, with whom she grew, then the Colonel and his forces, whose stupidity and malevolence shaped Kiki's life and influenced Ryukusa's teenage years. After this, there is the fight with our teacher -who meet every promising fighter before their powers awaken (which happened just before the start of the quest, for us).

It's also interesting to see there is an excalation of how the conflict resolved. Stop the desire to fight and start to heal the relationship --->Accept to not fight and might have a bit less ressentment---> one-sided destruction despite the offer of mercy wasn't taken ---->nearly even combat with attempt to not fight shot down.
