It's early morning in Pearl.

All the structural repairs on the Manse's structure are pretty much complete. Out of your window, you can see the work crews taking their sweet time to report for what little work is left. Carefree, without much sense of urgency.

Golden Reach is more or less in the same condition now as it was before the battle. It's still a rushed job of a fortress with basically no comforts or amenities, but the sheer structure, the walls and ceilings and stairs and windows and such, is all there.

Of course, the original plan was to make it shiny, comfortable, luxurious and impressive, the way a Solar manse is supposed to be, but for that you'll need Valeriana's blueprints and directions, and even then it'll probably be a matter of months or years of work.

But that's right, there's no rush right now. You have breakfast with your servants and then arrange for the scheduled training of the Steelshard mercenaries. Deal with small matters of administration and governance that require your attention (solving minor disputes, organizing work and guard details, and such).

What else?

...You really do feel lonely. Did this whole "bet" you had with Tia get blown a bit too much out of proportions? If so, is it her fault, or yours? Or are you just being weak right now?

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a vast amount of allies and friends, and defeated every threat to Tianna up to now.
You recently discovered that Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress. Your forces have crushed the Bodhisattva Anointed by Dark Water, a Deathlord who tried to usurp its power for himself.
Now you have built a solid power base, and worked hard to draw the attention and earn the trust of the Unconquered Sun. What will your next step be?

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

After a brief and early lunch, you organize your thoughts and decide to go and see the Black Fangs, camped right outside town. The tribe that, after the destruction of the Wyldland of the Black March, pledged their alliance to Tia and asked her to become their chieftaness.

As far as you can tell, even though Tia has been often busy with other things, she's always taken that role very seriously. Sure, she might be a bit lacking in what you'd call... conventional leadership qualities, but heck, barbarians are quite a bit different from settled folk.

You've spent some time with them and other nomad tribes, but you must admit you still don't really understand them. But then again, you've lived in cities and with city-dwellers all of your life, so that's probably understandable.

You go and fetch your Swift Rider, the technomagical device you recovered from the Titan and Irene fixed up. It's amazingly fast and when not in use folds up to the size of a small briefcase or backpack, but without a hearthstone it's really inconvenient to use for long trips, as it seriously eats through your Essence supply.

But for short distances, it's good enough.

You unfurl the machine and hop aboard, and just a few minutes later dismount, having arrived at your destination.

With the destruction of the western wyldland and the foundation of Pearl, a few barbarian groups from the northern forests have moved to these new fertile plains and settled them. They don't really farm the land, but hunt and gather what they find. In your mind that sounds really inefficient - especially on an island with limited space - but it's their way of life, after all.

In fact, you're quite surprised by the size of the camp. You don't remember the Black Fangs ever being so numerous. A wooden palisade surrounds a field of colorful leather tents, far more than you saw the last time you paid a visit to them. Strips of meat, animal skins and grains and vegetables are laid out to dry under the sun as the people of the tribe, clad in simple clothes, going by each on their own errands in a relaxed manner.

As the men and women of the tribe spot you arriving, they bow to you, each as deep as they wish to but none any less than respectfully, but keep minding their own business.

That's because they probably spotted your arrival from a long way, because your welcoming committee is already ready.

"Maka." Iscariah greets you with a nod, approaching you. The sight of her wearing the Ashigaru Armor you gifted her, decorated and embellished with talismans, furs and tribal paints, is subtly amusing. "Why the visit? Are there any problems?"

>>
>>43085302
Ours are from a First Age ruin, so they are presumably First Age themselves and don't need upkeep. If we were to make mopre of them, the new ones would have to be made using Second Age technology and would require upkeep.

"No, no problems at all. I was just passing by." You glance around at the busy village. "...How are things going after leaving the forest and moving to the western plains near Pearl? You seem to be handling things pretty well."

"We split up the island." She nods. "The Black Fangs take the plains, and the White Skulls take the forest."

"White Skulls... that's Talon's tribe, right? Weren't there other tribes?" You remember.

"Yes, back when the Lunars didn't take direct leadership." She explains. "Now that they do, well, bit by bit, all the tribes of the Three Rivers are condensing into two main groups. Us and them."

"Any rivalries?" You wonder.

She shrugs. "Some cattle-stealing, some kill-stealing in hunts, some roughhousing, a couple of minor feuds. So... no. Pretty normal." She smiles. "Don't take this as flattery, but I much prefer things when the Exalted are in charge. Leaders should be competent, and the Exalted are simply more competent than mortals. As long as it doesn't become tyranny."

You're not too sure if that remark is meant to be a warning or just simple conversation.

"So, you trade with the people in Tianna from here?"

"Farms take a lot of time and work before the first harvest." She grins, beaming with pride. "But when you hunt, you gather and you always keep your cattle close, you never have to worry about harvests that much. We provide food to your city-people, they get us some useful tools in exchange." She points to a tribesman chopping wood not far from you. The axe head is polished steel, quite different from the copper-like alloy you've seen the Black Fangs use for metal in the past, which used to be, you remember, the full extent of their metalsmithing technology that their semi-nomadic lifestyle would allow.

"You still smelt Admiral's Gold?" You remember its name.

>Now that they do, well, bit by bit, all the tribes of the Three Rivers are condensing into two main groups. Us and them.
Wait, the whole point of putting Tia in charge of the Barbarians was that when when Married her and Amata the island would be united under the three of us. This was not the fucking plan Talon.

I know it's not malicious, but we had a plan to unite the island under a central government, and this is messing with it. I just want to know where this came from.
>>
A First Age alloy which makes up most of the Titan's outer hull, now broken up by rusting and sheer age. Here and there throughout Tianna, it surfaces in deposits of sand-like ore, which the Black Fangs have learned to smelt and use as tool metal and jewelry.

"Yeah. The city-people seem to like it for jewelry. We're no longer using it for metal and tools, so we trade it for iron and steel. What little they feel like trading anyway, their prices are high."

"Well, apart for your Admiral's Gold, Tianna is fairly poor in other metals." You think about it. "But not long from now some people will come from off-island to check if these new lands that we have taken from the Wyld are rich in iron and other metals, so that might change in the future."

"With all the crazy buildings you're doing over there, we're all going to need that." She slaps you playfully. "Don't drive the price of iron too damn high until then."

"I'll try my best." You reply.

You just finished saying that when a nearby tree screams and explode.

A huge, heavy-set, muscular bear of a warrior flies straight through it, on a low, straight trajectory, and impacts against the palisade surrounding the village.

The tribesmen react a bit startled by the sudden noise, but then keep going like nothing happened, even as other warriors begin to fly and rain around on various trajectories, all black and blue and bleeding, none however dead or seriously injured (even though some refuse to get back up.

"...I found her, didn't I?" You ask Iscariah.

"Oh?" She seems confused as to what you might be talking about for a moment, but then she realizes. "Yeah, Tia's in that spot of woods there training some of our warriors, near that huge oak-." She points, but then lowers the arm. "-oh, nevermind, she uprooted it and she's using it as a bat."

The fact that there's two tribes doesn't mean Tia can't be the ultimate leader of both tribes while being directly in charge of only one as its chieftan. It works like a tribal federation.

Something like a hunter-gatherer semi-nomadic barbarian tribe can't get too large without splitting in smaller groups. They need a lot of space to hunt and gather, and once the space they occupy is large enough they effectively lose unity.

"...Is she mad or something?" You ask Iscariah.

She shrugs. "It's how she trains us. It works. I've seen people being put through her training course become amazing in days."

"What about you?" You suggest.

She grins. "I was the first, of course."

The two of you duck as a heavy-set woman dual-wielding axes flies over your heads screaming and flailing about.

"Oh, well." You change clothes. "Time to go and meet her."

You get a reaction out of Iscariah. "...What's with the clothes change. Actually, no, wait, I just want to know another thing instead. How does that bit stay there?"

You give her a light shrug and walk up to Tia, while the rest of the barbarian warriors scatter and dive for cover.

She has a few javelins, throwing axes, arrows sticking out of her. Not nearly running her through or biting deep, but just lightly sticking out of her skin. As she moves, a few of them fall off. She's covered in blood, hard to tell how much hers or other people's. As soon as she spots you, she straightens out, losing her hunched-forward, beastly posture, complete with bloodshot eyes and bared fangs, You feel her tense up.

I'm still against it.
>>
>>43086135
You are blowing this way out of proportion, if anything not doing anything in this bet is belittling Tia and thinking too little of her.

There might be a line to cross, but we haven't gone anywhere near it and we have no plans to in the future, we'll tease and prod, but we won't like hold her down and rape her or throw our full set of social charms at her.

It would be insulting if it was because Maka thought Tia couldn't take it.

I'm sure Tia would succeed, if we let the bet go. That's not the point.

The point is, the bet is obviously making life harder for both Tia and Maka, and I'd rather not have that kind of mood for Maka's, Tia's and Amata's wedding
>>
>>43086259
>et's not cal the bet stupid after putting her through all this.
What have we put her through? We haven't done anything to her since making the bet, we've been busy with other stuff.

"I want to do some... wrestling training with you, actually." You suggest, wiggling your eyebrows.

She wiggles back. "...SEXY wrestling?" She asks, inching closer.

"It might be." You reply.

Your last word has barely left your mouth, that she has flash-stepped right in front of you and grabbed your right wrist with both hands.

[p+d= 2 5 6 10 1 5 4 1 = 2 successes]

"Wai-"

Before you can react, she lifts you up and slams you in an overhead judo throw so hard you end up embedded in the ground, face-up, in a Maka-shaped crater, all the air knocked out of your lungs in a single blow, ears whistling and head spinning.

"No, thanks." She pats her hands to wipe the dust off them, looking rather satisfied. "Anything else?"

It takes you a while before you regain the ability to respond.

We were never lovey-dovey with Tia. Bonding with our fists seems more like something we would do. Right now we have 4 physical and 4 dawn so it should be fun to fight for Tia.
>>
>>43086395

She doesn't, obviously

>>43086374

Using charms with other Exalted is not knife fighting or cheating, it's a completely natural expression of an Exalted's power. Exalts use charms, even passively. I don't mind not using charms as a handicap, but this mentality that we should gimp ourselves for other peoples benefit needs to stop

Sparring with someone you have a chance of beating is fun, sparring with someone stronger and more skilled than you who isn't your teacher and just wants you to go away is painful.
>>
>>43086514
I'm fine with either using SHS or not, like if Tia activates her charms I'm fine with doing the same, but otherwise I voted against it not to gimp ourselves, but because I don't think we really need to at the moment.
>>
>>43086550
And what makes you think we'll even notice if she uses any non-obvious charms?
Maybe she already did use charms?
>>
>>43086514

it's not gimping ourselves, it's just a question of how serious we want this fight to be.

Using limb-breaking techniques is aslo a natural expression of a martial artist's power, but most people would agree you don't do it in a spar
>>
>>43086545

She just need some stress release in some form. Besides do you really think we should just leave here?

"...oh, it's ON now." You growl, springing out of the ground and locking hands and butting heads with the Lunar.

"Bring it." She replies, eagerly, hissing in your face with delight. Her hands squeeze around yours painfully, and she tries to twist your arms back down and break your grasp.

She's terrifyingly strong, even stronger than you remember from the last time you wrestled, but she's not pulling any shapeshifting trick on you now: just pure brute strength.

[p+d= 8 6 2 1 2 8 10 7 = 5 successes]

Then, she strikes. With a quick low kick she knocks you out of balance, shifts her grasps as you fumble for a second, crushes you in a bear hug that would've shattered a marble pillar, and then...

...and then, Tia takes to the air in a tall leap and breaks into a spinning piledriver.

You react fast, twisting and slipping out of her clinch by kneeing her in the sternum first, and in the throat immediately afterwards. She wasn't expecting that.

A split-second before your simultaneous impact against the ground, you almost manage to break free and kick her away, but she bats the blow aside at the last minute, holds your ankle and... well, and runs out of time: before she can try to put you in another clinch, hold or throw, you both slam heavily on the dusty soil. You land on your other leg, but badly enough to be painful, and collapse to the ground, while Tia just impacts headfirst.

You backflip back on your feet as soon as you have traction, while Tia rolls to keep some distance and slowly stands back up, clutching her head.

"Where did you learn that?" She mumbles.

"Made it up on the spot." You grin.

Tribespeople from the Black Fangs begin to gather around you (although at a fair distance) to see the fight. Quite a few of them cheer and encourage.

"I'm not going to lose to you." She says, with a strange fire in her eyes. Does she mean this impromptu bout of wrestling, or... something else?

>>
>>43086965
>And Talon as well, he's another heavy hitter.
I don't know why people keep thinking this.

Talon is a Changing Moon - a social Lunar. Combat is at best a secondary focus, in a manner much the same as Maka. Social>Physical>Other Shit.

Just because he's tall and buff doesn't mean he's great at combat, the same way Tia being short and cute doesn't mean she's a social exalt.
>>
>>43086989
I mean he's not at Tia or Karas, but neither is Maka and she holds up well in a fight.

In the Titan we saw him fighting Moray and a group of Vodak troopers swinging around a Warstrider sword
>>
>>43086989
Talon is probably the Maka of Lunars, yeah he's Social Primary, but Physical secondary is a good bet considering we saw him tear into a group of power armored troopers with a big ass Warstrider daiklave right after he was fighting a Dawn caste.

"That's what I love about you." You reply, doing three quick short leaps backwards, which catch her by surprise. She raises her guard by instinct, but way too early, giving you time to read her stance and pose.

Then, you kick against the ground and launch yourself in the air, straight at your Lunar mate.

[p+d= 10 9 7 8 4 3 10 9 = 8 successes]

You twist in midair, flip around legs-first, and slam straight into her, locking your thighs around her head and squeezing until you feel the seams in her skull pop one after another.

She struggles for a second, trying to stay standing and peel you off her, but to no avail: you spin your body, twist your hips, and send her flying.

You backflip and execute a perfect landing on your feet after launching her. She lands a full fifteen seconds later, headfirst, about thirty meters away from you, with two dull thuds from her forehead and then the rest of her body meeting the ground.

In those fifteen seconds, the entire village is watching in utter silence.

You calmly step up to Tia, who isn't standing back up. She's healing, and conscious, but staying down, maybe too shocked or stunned to struggle back to her feet.

You slam a foot in her chest, pinning her to the ground, and lean closer. The audience gasps.

She looks up to you and grins, resigned.

You pick her up in your arms, instead of whatever she was expecting you to do, and help her stand back up.

She looks at you, surprised.

"...Pretty good, huh?" You wink.

The noise that comes out of her mouth is not quite words, and you can only describe it to yourself as [the noise a teenage girl's heart makes when exploding].

It takes he a few more seconds to regain her composure.

"You're amazing." She whispers.

"I know."

You smile your winningest smile yet, and hold her in your arms.

You really missed this feeling.

"...I'm sorry." She says all of sudden, sounding oddly amused.

"...About what?" You wonder.

Tia DOES look sorry. Like she's about to do something she doesn't WANT to, but MUST do. She takes a deep breath. "I can't let you win."

Before you can ask her what she means, she's already sucker-punched you in the stomach, grabbed your head, and headbutted it so hard you're still seeing stars ten seconds later, as you try to stand back up again.

"I can't lose a fight against you in front of my entire tribe." She replies in a whisper. "It's not how it works."

In her own way, she's trying to be a good leader, you guess. You shake the dizzy stars from your head.

The crowd, which seemed to have lost interest when the mood shifted from fighting to romance, is back into it, screaming for blood.

If we fight again with charms, the people from the tribe will get the message that Tia can't defeat us normally and needs to rely on charms. It might not be the right message to give them.

How about we have another round, we... not quite "let her win" but we don't get up when she knocks us down... and then we have a third round with full use of charms and supernatural powers, as glowy and showy as possible, just to please the crowd?

"...Alright." You grit your teeth, straighten you pose, and raise your guard, fists clenched.

The crowd murmurs with excitement. Even Tia seems pleased.

She dashes at you, breaking all of sudden in a dead run that would be a great moment for her to howl some kind of war cry or something, but, instead, she stays completely silent.

It's subtle things like these that sometimes catch people off-guard. You'd expect someone charging at you to also be screaming or making some sort of noise.

[p+d=2 6 8 5 7 9 6 9 = 4 successes]

You wait for her, and brace when she just shoulder-checks into you.

In a fight between mortals, that would have been a predictable and dangerous move. But Tia's sheer strength and speed are such that, if you hadn't had the time to brace down, she'd have just plowed straight through you, probably sending you spinning across the sky.

Instead, your two feet, firmly planted in the ground, dig two shallow trenches as she slams you back almost five meters, losing momentum with every step until you're at a standstill.

The grin on her face goes ear to ear.

You grab each other's hands again, putting arm strength against arm strength.

And, since you know you can't compete with her in that, the very first thing you do is actually let her push you back and sommersault backwards, landing a nice rising kick on her chin.

She stays up.

"...You HAVE gotten a lot better." She massages her jaw.

"You thought it was just a fluke?" You reply.

"Or instinct." She shrugs. "It's hard to force yourself to dodge those thighs."

>Alright, she called it. You'll have to use that move again. You need practice on it anyway. (p+d)

You spin in mid-air and-

And feint your precious thigh clinch, only shifting your weight around at the last possible moment and instead impacting on Tia's neck with your extended arm.

(p+d= 5 8 8 1 7 1 2 9 = 4 successes)

It feels like trying to clothesline a cliff. You slam into her as hard as possible, and your arm sends a pang of pain to your brain in response. Tia recoils and is staggered, but doesn't falter, and you lose control for the last couple meters of airborne time and make a messy and inelegant landing behind her.

She doesn't waste time: while you're regaining balance, she just rockets at you with an axe kick, coming down to, apparently, cut you in half.

Rather than try to block it or finding a way to counter it, however, it's just simpler for you to drop down entirely, roll away, and let her blow crack the ground where you were standing up to a moment before.

Yo're about to roll back up and say something brilliant to keep up the banter, but Tia just doesn't stop, keeping all of her momentum: she turns her failed kick into a springboard, leaping up in the air only to then drop straight at you in a downwards flying kick.

>You could take it- it would be painful, but it would look Tia look really good in front of her people. (s+d)

As Tia descends on you, you cross your arms and raise your guard...

[INSPIRED PERFORMANCE STYLE]

(s+d = 9 6 5 2 1 4 6 6 10 10 3 2 = 5 successes)

Her kick slams against your arms, and you feel like both should break right then and there. Her sheer momentum knocks your guard aside and drills into your chest, knocking you into the ground, and all the air out of you.

You black out for a moment, When you come back to, it's because you feel Tia pulling you out of the hole in the ground you are, as the crowd cheers furiously.

Gallantly, she lifts you up in her arms, and the cheers get louder, accompanied by a few wolf whistles.

"Thanks for the rematch." She smiles. "We'll call it even."

And then she kisses you.

The kiss you gave her was a brief, light thing. This one she's giving you is a full-blown affair. It drags on for more than a full minute and has nearly as much energy into it than all of the fight up to now. This, predictably, makes the crowd only go wilder and wilder.

Once she's satisfied- no, satisfied is ENTIRELY the wrong word. Anyway, once she's done, she leans closer and spends a few seconds just calmly looking into your eyes.

She's fighting it. Her instincts and impulses are clearly screaming. She wants to slam you to the ground and ravish you, here and now, in front of everyone. She needs it so much.

But, she's restraining herself wonderfully. She leans back, smiles graciously, and sets you down.

"...You're really determined about this." You have to admit.

"I am."

"You're not quite doing this just for winning the bet, right? It's not just because I promised you a week of anything you'd want from me." You ask.

"Not just that." She thinks about it for a second. "Also that. But not just that."

You narrowly dodge out of her chokehold and roll away "Just be honest with your feelings and admit you lost!"

And she CHASES AFTER YOU.
