It feels good to hit the road again.

You wouldn't quite make such a claim if you just came back from an exploration trip, your journeys have been safe and satisfying as of yet, but not the most comfortable. Not to mention they only became good memories after you made it back, when the nerve-wracking tension of not knowing where you were, with nobody to call for help, and no maps of the area to rely on, had faded only to leave space to the satisfaction of a job well done.

You've also had the chance to see some pretty exotic flora and even a bit of fauna, which you might also argue should include people like Leiana, Arianna and Susanna, even though you had to admit you were pretty lucky to have found tame and even friendly specimen who actually need the presence of other humans.

You wonder how different your encounter would have been if the arachne had no need for mates, it's kind of sad that there's so few left and they have to loan human(oid) males, at least for the time being, but people in need are more willing to settle for compromises. You know that feeling very well.

The party accompanying you is larger than ever: other than Tahenohan and Bryld, whom you've grown to know in the past month, you have your old friends with you, your father, whom you met completely on accident, and the surprisingly quiet lizardfolk travelling with him.

There's also the matter of that joke you made about Tahenohan being the one to tell you about your father's identity, but by now he had time to clear the misunderstanding and confusion and you're being pressured to tell the truth, the actual truth, as you expected would happen.

Your friends aren't orphans, that's a condition you alone had to deal with, and considering your demonic heritage you had come to terms with the idea you never would have met any of your real parents. You fully understand their surprise...

“I have used blood rites”, you explain, to your friends mostly, who were still not in the know about your peculiar connection to the Mother of monsters, “That's why I am one hundred percent certain he is my father, it's... Foolproof, really”.

Most people don't know how blood rites work, but they are familiar with divine powers and ministrations, and since it's your friends you are talking to you can count on their implicit trust about what you've just said. None of them look like they expected this kind of answer, and you can't really blame them, but none look shocked either.

Not Reiram, he's the living embodiment of the “good giant” trope and would smile kindly and accept your word no matter what you just said, not Zillis who has always been very pragmatic about everything, not Lucas who seems to think this is kind of cool, and not Mires who's happy enough being able to jog her heart out outside.

Maybe Meztli, the adventurer following your father, has an opinion about it but if she does she's keeping it for herself. You've talked to her so you know she actually can speak and does, indeed, have a voice, but you're prepared to not hear it very often.

“I'm happy for you”, Reiram comments, gently patting your back. You smile back at him, though this reminds you that you can't use the same trick on your mother, since she is not of mortal origin and her blood doesn't carry any information you can divine. Then again, your father's recount of her wasn't terribly kind.

“Have you ever been further North? To Maner?”, Lucas asks, “I heard it's the heart of the Reconquista everyone tried to reach before leaving town started being this dangerous”.

“I don't think it's actually this dangerous”, Zillis scoffs

Maner is further North from New Royo, it's where the Royal Army is encamped, the "town" pretty much grew around it, since it already had a long train of followers, supplies and so on.

“Never been there”, you admit. You've been pretty busy exploring the uncharted parts of the Shadow Marches rather than continuing along the well-traveled path, “But I plan to visit that town since I need to meet the marquise”.

“We're also headed that way”, your father announces, with a satisfied smile, “The Royal Army is likely in need of services and they pay better than the Royal Casino does”.

“It'd be strange if they demanded us to pay them after all, wouldn't it?”, Tahenohan grins, “Although I heard it was common practice in the Jade Meadows”.

“Where'd you hear that?”, he chuckles, shaking his head. You have no idea what they're talking about, except it's an area geographically close to Prontera, a large plain spreading irregularly to the West.

“Maybe that's where we should go, too? It sounds like it's a place ripe for opportunities and expansion unlike Reboldeux”, Zillis' words seem filled with hope as much as they were when you first departed.

“Er... I don't know”, Lucas intervenes, “It is rather far...”.

“For the love of Gaia I'm not a cripple!”, between her frown and her tone it's obvious they've been having this argument quite a few times, especially recently. Lucas did become a lot more cautious and nearly overprotective ever since he learned Zillis was pregnant, despite she's the kind of woman that would easily refuse to stop working in the fields until her baby would start to try and get out.

“Well it's... Not really too far”, Bryld intervenes, mostly to placate Lucas. Smart girl, “People don't build towns too far from one another, give it time and I'm sure there'll be three more just on the way from Reboldeux to New Royo”.

You have to trust her reasoning, she did study past the mandatory school for children after all, she likely knows what she's talking about.

“We're getting ahead of ourselves”, you chuckle, you've been in that mindset already in the recent past and you found out that all it got you was half the pay you agreed on and the knowledge that the map Bryld made will be forgotten in a cupboard for probably ever, “Let's just get to New Royo first and foremost, then we'll see how to proceed”.

“That sounds reasonable, yes”, Bryld smiles, grateful for your assist. Fortunately, you're in what you would definitely consider a reasonable company, and the recent memories of how life was in Reboldeux has driven everyone's expectations low enough that just about anything even vaguely better feels like a godsend. It's sad but it also works in your collective favour.

The road has, of course, not been completed, and isn't paved all the way. You would say they made surprisingly little progress since the last time you've walked from Reboldeux to New Royo. In a way, it helps you feel like you're braving the Shadow Marches for the first time again; you do realize it's an oxymoron but having your old and new friends together gives a new and fresh meaning to this journey.

You do take more breaks than usual and try to not make it feel like you're being overly protective of Zillis in general, but now that you've had plenty of time to get a good look at her it's obvious that her pregnancy is starting to show. You wouldn't say her belly is prominent yet but it's enough to be noticeable, and you don't want to exhaust a pregnant woman.

You still didn't slow down much, although the sun is starting to settle by the time you reach the caravansary. If you redouble your pace you should still be able to reach New Royo before nightfall, you might have to use just a little bit of lantern oil, but it's nothing you can't manage.

… Or you can stop there for the night, it's not like you're in a hurry.

“We should stop at the caravansery”, you offer to your quite large adventuring party, comprised of people who aren't really all adventurers. Actually, the majority isn't. “There's still no other villages as far as I know, at least not on our way, and New Royo was built with the expectation that the road would be completed by now”.

“Not everything goes as expected”, Mires shrugs, moving inside the inn, who seems to have been worked on recently, for it appears to be a little larger and more complete than before. You were pretty sure it was missing a section of the roof, for example.

Outside there's just as many tents as there were before, but it seems like a good chunk of them are empty. You don't quite specifically peek into any of them, but some have been left wide open and there's very little inside, indicating that either the owner is very poor or he stopped living there.

Inside, the place is less crowded than you remember: back when you danced there you barely had the room to move, right now you could dance with a lot less care and not run the risk of hitting anyone, or even just injure yourself against some kind of treacherous furniture. The innkeeper is where you expected him to be, and does not seem to have a single care in the world. He is not smoking anything, however, and this makes the common room appear much clearer than before, though it still bears the lingering scent of smoked substances.

“Welcome. My, that's quite a large band of roving adventurers”, he comments, with a tip of jolly sarcasm, “And I think I remember some faces”.

“I remember yours too”, Tahenohan answers, feeling the need to state it out loud.

It almost feels odd to see this place so empty, but at the very least you won't have to worry about there not being room for all of you.

A bit. With the schedule change and everything I was afraid there'd be no people left to play with anymore, that the steam had died and there'd be no interest left. Finding myself in this situation again is kind of reassuring, in a way.

But enough with this, let me get the adventure going.

It completely slipped my mind that you're running today, next time you might want to give a few hour ahead notice.
>>
“We're in need of a room for the night”, you say first and foremost, preventing Tahenohan from entertaining him in a conversation that might get to places fast, as is usually the case, and he seems to be prone to encouraging such acts from your previous experience with him. “There's nine of us”.

“Would you rather stay inside or outside? Don't worry if you don't have tents, there's plenty that are empty. Just please leave everything like it was when you found it, I'd hate to have to hire someone to catch thieves in this day and age”, he's talking casually like he doesn't really expect you to do something that low.

“I think we'll stay inside”, you've had enough of sleeping outside, even if it was just once, and you don't want to subject your friend to another night out in the cold. Even if it's not really out in the cold, with the tents and everything, but still, they deserve a bed. “So... Is it a slow day? I remember this place being much more crowded”.

“It was, just how any place is overbooked and oversold when too many rumors fly around and too many people buy them”, he is as relaxed and collected as ever, even while Mires loiters about aimlessly, opening cuboards and checking under tables in her usual habit of being incapable of staying still for a while, and Tahenohan leans over the counter to peek at what's beneath it. “It was too fast yesterday, it's slow now, it'll be normal tomorrow”.

“What do you mean?”, you ask.

“The Reconquista is a very good thing, and the Shadow Marches are well-known for being very fertile, very rich lands”, he explains, “But too many merchants thought they would find a land ripe for exploitation, forgetting there's no civilization, little to no workers, and unknown opposition. Too much competition for too small a prize”.

>”Where did the merchants go?”.
>”Was it the pirates or the undead?”.

“So what scared everyone off? Was it the pirates or the undead?”.

“I think the former mostly. A merchant who's afraid for his personal safety might just get an escort or send an envoy, but pirates are lost profit, lost merchandise and lost ships. Ships are very expensive and very valuable, some would rather have their contractors be ripped apart by the undead than have pirates steal their ships”, he gives a simple shrug despite the topic, “The undead got the workers and most settlers scared, which makes development go even slower, and without infrastructures there can be no commerce, not of the entity we were prepared for, at least”.

“You don't seem to be very concerned”, you note, “Were you prepared for this?”.

“There will always be the need for a caravansary in a place such as this one, even if it's going to take a while before Reboldeux recovers from its problems and the new marquise does something. Most people forget that the logistics problem hit our Royal Army the hardest and is slowing the Reconquista, and those who don't are on their way back to Izulde, afraid the bubble will burst”.

“What bubble?”.

“It's a colloquial term for when you inflate a market more than it can handle until it inevitably pops and the riches turn into thin air”, he even does the motion of a bubble popping in the air with his hands, “Let's just say that someone had excessive expectations from this Reconquista. Excessive and way too immediate”.

Tahenohan pulls back down from the counter, smiling at the innkeeper, “But they will come with time, will they not?”.

He gives a shrug, “New Royo's going to have a temple soon, and with that the blessings will come, and the land will be even more fertile. It's only a matter of time before villages start filling the landscape”.

“What can you tell me about the pirates?”.

“Not much. They're pirates, and nobody knows when they hid there. Word goes that they travelled across the Crystal Sea to escape from the kingdom's navy and hid there, making everyone else think they were lost at sea or sunk against the jagged coast but I don't buy it. Not that it's important, I've been told from very reliable sources that they've been dealt with”.

“Dealt with?”, that's surprising news, Bryld, who decided to stick with you, makes the befuddlement very visible on her expression, “You mean they're not a threat any more? So why are the merchants still leaving?”.

“When you're burned once, you end up being reluctant doing the same thing twice. Like when you cut yourself doing something you're unfamiliar with: you'll think twice before trying again. Besides, I tried telling people about this, but they seemed to think I had... Ulterior motives”.

“And do you?”, Tahenohan asks, squinting her otherwise quite wide eyes.

He shrugs, with the hint of a smile on his lips, “My motives in getting people to stay here are obvious enough, don't you think? Still, I was honest. The pirate threat is no more”.

“What about the undead?”, you wonder.

“Can't really help you there. You'd have to ask someone in the Royal Army”.

“Speaking of which, are there any news from Maner?”.

He stares at you straight in the eye, the hint of a smile showing again on his face, “You're quite a curious one, you know? When you deal with a merchant, information has a price”.

“I thought we were just gossiping”, you smile amiable, and he chuckles.

“Fine, fine. The Reconquista is on hiatus because their supplies were harried by the pirates, I don't know whether on purpose or by accident, and they're currently trying to fortify their position. They need a base to launch further attacks”.

“Do you know the marquise?”, you ask.

“No, but I heard something. I'll give it out for free since you're so nice to bring me many customers, but I'll still expect that you put a good word in for me”, you're not sure whether he's joking or not, “I have heard that it's a woman, that she has claims to these lands as a member of the previous ruling family, a heir of sorts, and that she's not very well-liked in Prontera because of this”.

“Why?”.

“Because it appears that for some reason nobody remembered about her existence, and plenty of nobles were already courting for favours to be nominated as the new marquis of the Shadow Marches. They didn't like such last-minute intrusion and many cried foul play, but despite that it appears that her claim is legitimate, and the king had, or so I was told, no choice but to allow her to step in”.

You study his expression for a minute. You don't know much about politics, but this kind of scheming sounds like it came from a novel of some sorts; not that you don't believe this can be true, but the situation is kind of strange, and you feel like something is missing. Unfortunately, he's quite good at handling information and his face gives nothing away.

“Do you remember her name?”.

“I remember the first name being Elgarla, but I can't remember her family name. Placentia, of course, like the previous ruling family, but there's a second last name in the middle which I cannot recall. I do apologize”.

He seems to be honest about not remembering that part. Still, “Elgarla Placentia” should be good enough for you.

Meanwhile, everyone seems to have taken the chance to sit around one of the low tables and on top of soft, comfortable cushions. Other than Bryld and Tahenohan, who are at your side.

Since Tahenohan and Bryld are right next to you, you turn around to hear their opinions first. “So, how are the two of you doing?”.

“He doesn't have those spirits he gave us last time any more”, Tahenohan immediately complaints.

“I'm okay”, Bryld smiles as she joins in, “I'm just a little tired”. She pauses, “... And really disappointed about my map”.

“I'm sorry”, you comfort her.

“I mean what was that?”, she frowns, looking as angry as you can imagine her being, which is barely ticked off for most people's standards. She's about as pissed as she was at you and Tahenohan when you ate that magic mushroom that made you higher than you were prepared to deal with. “I went out in the wilderness, I faced skeleton warriors, I risked my life to give you a map and you do what? Give us five coins and lock the map somewhere you'll forget about it? MY map?”.

“I agree it was something-”.

“That was my first time!”, she nearly shouts, and her ears immediately flop as she realizes she almost did so, but then they perk up again as she continues, staring at you with bewilderness still in her eyes as she vents off, “It was the first time I drew a map that I didn't copy from somewhere else! It was my very first original work! I gave it all I had! I almost didn't want to give it because I was afraid it wouldn't meet the duke's standards!”.

“Yes, I-”.

“I swear if the marquise dares lock my next map away it will be the Bloody Meadows again!”, and then she crosses her arms and pouts, trying to calm herself down, to little avail. Everyone heard about the Bloody Meadows rebellion, and the following sack of Prontera near the end of the Midgaard Empire's days. She really is pissed, like that literal horde of lagomorphs a few centuries ago.

“Oh, I'm sure she won't do that”, you glance at Tahenohan to have her help out, Bryld is usually tremendously tame and shy almost to the point of being a pushover, which means you don't really know how to handle her right now. You do understand her qualm, however, “I mean try to look at the positive part: you got experience, so when you will show her your second work it will be better than the first. Besides, it's their own loss if they can't understand what a great job you did, and how precious it is”.

“Yeah”, Tahenohan agrees, “And without a map they won't be able to know the land so we can hide our armies until we're ready to strike and paint the throne room burgundy with the corrupts' blood!”.

“Oh they would SO deserve that!”, Bryld agrees, and you're quite sure she's just playing along. You hope.

“Let's try to look at this in a positive light”, you regain control of the conversation, “It's been an experience and we intend to repeat it. Plus, the chances that the marquise will be more generous are higher, if what we've heard about the Reconquista are true”.

Tahenohan nods wisely, “Assuming she's not a monstrous doppleganger that ate the legitimate heir and wore its skin to crawl in a position of power”, she then adds, ruining everything.

“What about you?”, you ask her, “How are you doing?”.

“I wish I could find more skeletons and that I could bring them with me. They could help with all sorts of stuff! Tilling the fields, chopping the wood...”. You stop her as she begins to count on her fingers, mostly because it sounded like the sort of count that would extend to the finger of her feet and then who knows where else.

“How about we take a walk out together? To calm our nerves”, you offer to your two friends, gently pushing their backs to lead them outside. The air, now that night is falling, is getting a tad little fresher, making walking much more pleasant than it has been in the day, even if all of you have your legs still sore from the travel. Well, all except for Tahenohan you bet.

A faint breeze blows through the air, making the heat more bearable and the idea of a small promenade more appealing. You all move slowly, as both you and Bryld would rather not try and keep the same pace you've been keeping on the move and are actually trying to relax instead. You also notice that most of the tents that aren't closed seem to be empty, and you're not sure about the others: you can't tell if someone's inside or not.

“I'm sure someone, some day, will find your first work, and think “Wow, we had something like this?” and then promptly forget about it in a better-looking cupboard”, Tahenohan tells Bryld in what you presume is an attempt to comfort her, gently stroking her hair from head to back, “But it's okay, hardly anyone is properly recognized at their very first work”.

“If you say so...”, Bryld sighs, but she sounds a lot calmer, if anything.

“Hey, back when I could barely put bones together, the first skeleton I animated crumbled into a messy heap and turned into dust after I tried to make it dance”, she explains with a manic smile, “And then I kept on dancing because I was still so happy I couldn't stop”.

“You sure have an enviably good outlook on life”, Bryld smiles.

You move closer to Bryld and wrap your hand around her hip; she's a bit shorter than you but not by that much, the height difference is certainly nowhere close to that between you and Tahenohan, and the perky ears help compensate. “Don't worry, Bryld. I've been around and did all kinds of work and my life is starting to pick up just now”, you give her a kind and sincere smile, “Don't give up just now”.

“Yeah”, Tahenohan grabs her hand and softly squeezes it, or massages her palm, it's hard to tell. Still, it gives you the chance to stroke her hair yourself. It's thick and straight, could be softer if you had a chance to bathe or shower, but you can't really complain. You're not in a much better situation yourself.

“I know, I just... I had such high expectations”, Bryld sighs. You move your hands higher up as she talks until you start stroking the base of her furry rabbit ears, “It's like I wasted a whole month of work. Very dangerous work. Had I that much time to prepare a map I could have made it in colour, with the right altitudes and maybe some artwork too. Like a frame”.

“Can you do that?”, you ask, wondering just how artistic she is.

“Well... No. Not those fancy frames you see on some maps, no”, she chuckles, “I can't do that. It would be a simple frame, but still, better than nothing”.

“I see”, you note, “Don't worry, I'm sure the marquise will be more appreciative of your skills”.

Bryld looks up at you, smiles, and then says “Thank you”, before hugging you and Tahenohan both. You hear the half-elf giggle somewhere in the midst, just like you feel both their bodies pressed against yours, which immediately reminds you that Bryld's breast feels much larger than it looks, but gets buried in yours less than Tahenohan's face, who's at the right height for that to happen.

She also quietly pats your soft behind, close to the very sensitive base of your tail. It's almost like she's trying to tell you something.

And this is it for Episode 43!

Thank you for participating, really. It seems like I can still run at this time of the day. How did you find it? Is it too early? I hope it's not too early because it's pretty much the only time frame I have available to run now.

How cuddly.

Thanks for running!

Do ho ho~

Thanks for running. The main issue I had with the time was that I forgot that your "afternoon" was my "morning".

Thanks for the thread. It was a bit early for me, but not too bad. I can participate but might miss some updates kinda thing.

I'm sorry about those that can't make it. Unfortunately I have to choose between running at this time and not running at all.

On the bright side I can stay on the thread for a little longer rather than diving for the bed immediately.

That's cool. It's morning for me (EST), but thankfully I don't have classes most days.
>>
>>43035828
That's always nice of course.

About how long a trek will it be to Maner?
>>
>>43035828
I will try to find a way to adapt to your new schedule. I'm more worried about what days you will be running from now, right now. Is it only on mondays?

I've been kinda worried about something. Lately, I've been finding your posts to be smaller than they used to be. how are you feeling, MP?
