You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you met with Pandora at R&D after a lengthy emergency repair session. She forgave Grace for the accident that temporarily blinded her, then expressed a desire to be taller when her new chassis was brought up. Afterward, you decided to take her on a tour of the Facility, eventually ending up in Medical where after a rather awkward question, you had to explain where human babies come from. Now she wants to know if you're going to make one with Babsy.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

"Mouse said you've been making 'eyes' at Babsy and that that means you like her." Pandora explains. "And if people that like eachother like that make babies, does that mean you'll be making one with her?" You make mental note to send yet another angry message to Mouse, as well as resolve to make sure she's never around the minuscule cyborg unsupervised again.

You feel a little more confident in telling Pandora this, as well as not wanting to deal in absolutes with Mouse (and possibly the rest of the R&D team) no doubt watching your every move.
"Well, see, people need to be a little closer than that to make a baby. They, ah, usually have to be together for a very long time to do it. It's not something you just do with someone because you feel like it, you know? Having a baby is a big commitment!" She nods at this, you assume she at least understands the basic idea of it. "When you do have a baby with Babsy, can I meet it?" She says, her eyes full of hope and wonder. Hell. "I..." You begin, but are mercifully saved by a ping from your PDA. The message is from Gen. Richards. Spoke too soon.

Gen. Richards: Just got a message from the CIA. They have an agent visiting tomorrow to go over protocol and make sure everything's in order. Report to my office, alone, 0800 tomorrow.

That's just peachy. You get to explain to the CIA why a top secret government project worth billions is watching dog videos on Youtube and dancing around the room in a dress.

With the tension sufficiently broken and the topic changed, you decide to take Pandora to the barracks to see what human living conditions are like here. She might even get to converse with some people without security getting in the way.

A quick jaunt and you realize you weren't even half right. There are possibly even more security guards here than anywhere else. You assume it's because here they can sneak off to their rooms to steal quick naps or just generally slack off. You've heard stories of how lazy and unmotivated most of the guards are, though you've never really had any kind of conversation with them at length.

You take Pandora to your quarters and show her what everything is for, though you don't exactly have much beyond a bed, some dressers and a few minor comforts. She's rather amused by how bouncy your "charging cradle" is.
Maybe you should try to get her to socialize a little? It'd be tricky to sneak her past the security guards, but not impossible.

With little much to see here, you figure now would be be as good a time as ever to end it, especially with the CIA inspection tomorrow, you'd rather not break any more rules. Though you notice Pandora a little unhappy about leaving all the people behind without getting to say hello, you resign yourself to better safe than sorry for now.

Still, today was an eventful day for her; with repairs, a new chassis on the way and her getting a taste of outside her room, you have a feeling she won't walk away from this without learning a thing or two. Maybe it'll make for some interesting dreams tonight, at least.
Oh! You realize you didn't check her dream journal from last night. As you hug her good night and hook her up to the cradle, you think that maybe you should take a peek? Or you could wait until she's filled it up a little more. You are getting a little sleepy.

Well like I said, R&D (where you essentially started this thread) is basically engineering, so it would've been a moot point to go back. I'd rather not just choose one of the options, either. I feel like that would be railroading, and I don't want to take away your choices in anything. You figure it couldn't hurt to check now, though you don't expect much. A quick flip of the notebook and what you see is rather...unsettling, to say the least. Inside is a poorly-written account of another nightmare, wherein Pandora is once again beset upon by the "Bad Man", but this one seems almost a continuation of the previous nightmare.

In it she describes being cornered by the Bad Man, who continually insults her and berates her, chasing her about her small dream world. She writes about wanting to drive away in a car, but not being able to find one that works. Everything she finds is broken or burning. She runs from him for the remainder of her dream before her systems are fully charged and she forces herself awake. She was relieved at escaping, but at the bottom of the page she wrote one final phrase. "He is mean! I am not a pet!"
You can only give a worried look and hope it doesn't happen again. You'll have to speak to her about this once you have some free time...

You head to bed, sending off a quick message to your team to let them know tomorrow's lesson assistance with Pandora is cancelled due to an important meeting, then set your alarm and flop into bed. You really wish tomorrow wasn't going to happen, but you've readied yourself for the eventual and occasional dog-and-pony-show hoops you'll have to jump through for various government suits throughout your time here. Sleep doesn't come easy, but mercifully fast.

The next day you wake to the harsh buzzing of your alarm, swatting it half-heartedly, you manage to barely drag yourself to your feet. The time is currently 0730 and you quickly get showered, shaved and ready. You have a little bit of time before the scheduled meeting. Should you do something before, or head there a little early to show the General your can-do attitude.

You decide to make a quick stop at the mess hall for some food and notice it's somewhat bare. Uncommon for this time of day, it's usually full of sleepy, grumpy staff doing their morning grind, but for some reason most people are absent. You figure there might've been some early morning event you weren't privy to or just weren't invited to. Whatever, more for you. You grab your food and breakfast and scarf it down, the quiet in the hall a little eerie and unnerving.

After you finish your meal you head to the General's office, still noting an absence of staff on the way, save for a few security guards and the occasional grounds keeper. Weird. You consider asking one what the deal is, but don't really have the time to chat. It'll have to wait.

You arrive and knock, the door whooshing open before your knuckles make contact with the door a third time. As you step inside, you notice you're not the only one called in; the heads for each section are there as well, Mouse giving you a chin-jutting nod before turning back to the General and an Asian man in a black suit and tie looking rather unfriendly.
With you are Mouse, Security Chief Palmer, a stout, hairy man with a chip on his shoulder, and Medical Chief Dr. Taggart, a plain-looking woman with fading red hair and thick glasses.

"Glad you could make it, doctor." General Richards says, a sour note in his voice. You notice the time is 0801 and inwardly harbor a secret wish to roll your eyes. The Agent standing next to him extends his hand for a rather firm handshake and nod. "Doctor." He says curtly. "I'm Agent Arikawa. I trust you were informed of the nature of my arrival. We're conducting inspections of the whole Facility, top to bottom, and were hoping you could walk us through some of the intricacies of the TBX-042 project. How is the AI coming along so far?"

>Cover up a few of the less desirable bits

What does TBX-043 stand for?
What happened to TBX-001 - TBX-041?
>>
>>43010581
Well, what are they looking for? If it's growth, we have that in spades.

We can note that while no damage or wear has been detected in the AI itself, it is as of yet incapable of practical function when there is loss of important hardware functions(arms, eyes, etc.)

On the other hand, TBX-042 is quickly grasping human concepts, more like a child than a robot, but even faster. Understanding contextual queues and implied emotions beyond what is strictly vocalized are skills easily within sight.
>>
....speaking of which, we should put that on the lesson plan much later: how to not panic when parts of you are broke and prep yourself for repair. Then how to maintain full function of everything else despite the loss of something.
>>
>>43010628
Well 001-041 were unsuccessful attempts, as things go. Prototypes and all that. Pandora is the first fully-functional and working AI. As for what TBX stands for, that's my little secret.

You figure lying to the CIA isn't exactly in your best interests, so you give him all the technical specs as well as explain her progress in learning. Her interest in art, organic live, dance and a genuine want for interaction. You also add that, while this last part is both fascinating and encouraged, she occasionally doesn't understand certain repercussions that can arise from her actions.
She is, however, an incredibly fast learner and has grasped concepts that would normally take a child weeks, if not months to understand in days. This shows a definite usefulness for future projects involving the AI as far as usage and utility. AIs can be trained in certain tasks in a fraction of the time it would take to train a human to do the same.

However, alterations would need to be made to the freedom of an AI's will if they wish to make them easier to manage as far as servants or possibly soldiers go, especially in the instance of damage to their systems or hardware where TBX-042 has shown a poor ability to cope with duress. But surrogates for families or individuals that require companionship would be perfect for them.

Everything you just spat out leaves a bit of a bad taste in your mouth, like you're being forced to treat Pandora as an object rather than a thinking, feeling being with emotions and interests no different than a human's. Still, it seems to please Arikawa and Richards, who both nod as the Agent takes notes. "Thank you very much for that assessment, doctor." He says, a well-practiced smile spreading artificially across his face. "We will be conducting a tour of the Facility, but we understand you have a lesson plan to stick to. However, I look forward to observing the AI in action later on. You are free to go."
You feel like you could've just sent in a memo about all that and he just wanted to watch you squirm. You bullshit a smile back, nod and leave.

That's that for tonight, gents, but I hope you enjoyed it! As always, thanks so much for coming!
