And now, for someone completely different.

Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: Vlad Tepish made friends among dwarves and got to know his blackguard a little more closely. He set out with his own undead and seven dwarves to explore the cavern whence the spiders had come from. He found kobolds, enslaved by the spider hivemind for generations and decided to free them and to learn their history. While reading their histories of an ancient stone tablet, he inadvertently awakened an ancient dragon, Necorax, overwhelming it with the help of his blackguard and the massive horde that is his army of undead. That is where the twenty seventh installment of Feral Necromancer Quest concluded, but it is not where this one shall pick up.

The Cast:

Lathrien- You are Vlad Tepish's apprentice and the first vampire. You have been cursed by the sun god Pern, yet the curse was bent to your favour by your will and that of Vlad Tepish. You are coming to terms with your newfound powers and your newfound weaknesses.

Melandie: Your lover and an elven berserker. She has been keeping her emotions in check lately, and you worry for her. She was full of life to the point of near-madness for her entire life, but a few incidents of mindless bloodrage has left her very wary of her emotions.

Bathory: Vlad Tepish's lover and the de facto leader of the temple in his absence. She is a kind woman, if her wit can be sharp at times, and your teacher cares for her deeply. You have not become close friends with her, but your get along fine.

http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfK Mechanics and Character Sheet, fully updated and now including character sheets for Melandie and Lathrien

Your Minions: 30 units worth of undead to be specified.
Your Holdings: A room near the library in Vlad Tepish's temple and a place to return to in the elven tribe, should you ever chose to do so.
Diplomacy: Wood Elves (Your Tribe), Desert Elves (Slight Positive), Dwarves (friendly), others similar to Vlad Tepish, usually slightly lower.
Goals: Learn to live with your curse. Make Melandie happy. Sate your thirst.

You are thirsty. No, that is not quite right. The artificial blood you make helps. You do not feel the thirst like you did on that long month back from the desert. You do not feel a blood-rage coming on at any moment now. You are in control and you are not starving. But the sensation of blood, true, natural blood calls for you every waking hour. Considering you do not sleep any more these days, that is a significant challenge. But you hold on.

You are making some of the artificial blood right now, in fact. You are not skilled in alchemy, but you can follow direction, and Vlad Tepish is a capable tutor. It is merely mixing the right ingredients together, and putting a little bit of magic in it, and you can do it with ease.

You feel somewhat bad about not telling Vlad Tepish the whole truth about your abilities. You have told him the truth, but, not the extent of it. You have not told him that if you stand still at night no creature living or dead can see you by anything but sheer dumb luck. You haven't told him how you seem to be able to convince humans to do whatever you want of them- not that you've abused that power. Yet.- And you have not told him just how much faster you have become. (cont.)

It is yours. Your secret. Something that nobody else knows. Perhaps you should share it. But not right now. You would not betray Vlad Tepish, but he is become a terrifying man. If you were to come to blows, your only chance would be shock and surprise.

He did warn you that your personality seemed to have changed. And to an extent he had been right. You hold the same beliefs, love and trust the same people. But there is cold confidence in your blood that was never with you when you were entirely alive.

You finish the blood and drink it down. It is nutritious. It is like eating grass and cold lard and raw barley. There is one way you are allowed to feed.

In a strange way you believe that Bathory might be the one to understand you best right now. She too has been granted an immortal body by Vlad Tepish and she too has become faster and stronger than she was in her previous life. True, she is no undead creature, but her situation is in many ways similar to yours.

You have to make a conscious effort to make your footsteps heard as you walk through the winding hallways of the ancient temple of your people. You remember your impotent rage when you first came here, how a human and a necromancer at that had claimed this sacred site of your people. You know better now. Your tribe could not be trusted with the power and knowledge here, and if Vlad Tepish has been telling you the truth, his plans will make the world better for everyone. And he gained most of his power from the knowledge sealed within these halls.

The desecration of the temple invigorates you now, and the emptiness you felt back in your mortal body is gone entirely. The twilight darkness of the halls is comforting too, now that you see in it better than any mortal creature would.

You pace swiftly to Bathory's room and knock.

'Lathrien!' Bathory says, opening the door. She seems somewhat surprised. You are not, after all in the habit of dropping in for chats with her.
'Bathory. I thought we might speak.'

'Of course, Lathrien, what is it?'
'Not an issue so much, it is merely that I feel we should know each other better,'
'Indeed? Well, I see no reason against it. Will you have a drink with me? Wait, can you?'
'Some water would be lovely.'

As it seem to be the only drink in her quarters you both take a cup of water and sit at her stone table. Her room is quite simple, but for the animal furs on just about every open surface. They leave the room warm and soft and really quite comfortable.

Bathory herself is quite visibly pregnant by now. She is not yet due for a few more months, but none could mistake the appearance. She is wearing a long silken gown.

'So, a pretty big change for you, as I understand,' Bathory says.
'Indeed. I had assumed that I am alone in this, but I had not considered your experiences.'
'It was quite the journey that led me to this body, yes.'
'Would you mind talking about it?'
'Well, it is quite the sad tale. A beautiful young maiden, plucked by death from the peak of her life. A desperate young man binds her soul and steals her away from afterlife. She hates him, they reconcile and she is given a body that does not age. A tale as old as time,'
'That is... a blunt way to put it.'
'Is it? It is the truth, and I am happy with where the road led me. Are you?'
'For the most part. I am better, in every logical way, but, well, there is the thirst. There is what sunlight does to me. My mind tells me that it is worth it, but my heart wants to watch a sunrise one last time.'
'Well, people in hell want cool water, as Vlad would say,'
'What?'
'I am sorry, I did not mean to be so harsh. People want things they cannot have. That is what wanting is. Nobody wishes for things they have already, or perhaps only the truly happy do, if there are any such people.'
'I see your point. What do you want, if you do not mind me asking?'
'It is a polite question, yet it is both private and obvious if you think about it.'

'I apologize. It is merely that my mind has been on serious matters lately. I do not wish to drag you into any bad thoughts,'

'I worry for her. She has not been the same, since she lost control and her leg.'
'I think she is fine. Though you know her better of course. Vlad has spoken to her and does not worry overmuch. Would you like for me to speak to her?'

>'Please do.'

Oh, right, I never specified. This is what is happening in Vlad's lands while he is fighting spiders in dorflands.

'I am unsure. I shall talk to her myself, and then I shall see. You are good with words.'
'It seems that so are you, all of a sudden.'
'Lady Bathory, I apologize truly if I am wrong, but have you anything against me?'
'Not at all. I have nothing but respect for a man who chose the immortality that my man, Vlad Tepish, if I have to remind you, saw as both too dangerous and possibly too evil. One he feared would piss off a god he did not want to tangle with. And I certainly have nothing against the fact that your entire personality changed over-night. What I do find somewhat rude is that you nearly killed Melandie for her blood before you told anyone how close you were to the edge.'

15! Not good enough.

'I admit, it is something I'm concerned about, but I have made my choices now, I will...'
'You will what, Lathrien? Yes, you cannot take them back and yes, life goes on. That does not make what you have done any more right.'
'But Lady Bathory, can you not see that...'
'Lathrien, I think you better leave now. You will not change my mind with words. If you are sorry for what you have done, show it with your actions.'

You leave. There is nothing else you can do.

And you think. Certainly, it could be a ploy of some sort. Bathory might be setting up precedent to demonstrate enmity to Vlad Tepish in the case she wants to move against you.

But nonetheless, some of what she said resonates. Your choices of the last month have been... dubious. It is worth the time to take for some introspection.

You think back on your thoughts. And you are surprised at what you find. Suspicion above all. You have kept more secrets in the last month than you have in a lifetime. You fear schemes from those you would have trusted with your life before. From those that you have, in fact, trusted with your life before. You need to keep a close eye on your mind, and make sure you do not change in ways that you cannot come back from.

Now that you think about it, you are not the sole person in the temple that could use some training in mental discipline. Melandie's sorrow has come from her failure to control her own emotions and so you should talk to her before you decide on anything further.

She has once more taken to camping outside the perimeter of the desecrated forest, and you could hardly blame her. Without any training in necromancy, prolonged exposure to the energies would be downright torturous. Besides, you would have additional privacy in the forest.

And besides, the night has fallen and you visit her around this time whenever you can. The forest is dark, enchanted, and quite probably haunted and you feel more at home in it than any other place on this world.

You see the flames of Melandie's campfire as soon as you leave the temple and you reach it in ten minutes at a leisurely run. You sneak up to her and hug her from behind.

She jumps away and punches you in the face.

'Shit! Lathrien! Fuck!' She says and hugs you. 'What the hell are you thinking sneaking up on me like this?'
Your entire face feels numb.
'Ow. I just wanted to see if I could sneak up on you.'
'Well, congratulations,' she says. She pouts, but she kisses you where her punch landed.
'How have you been?'
'Bored. I mean, I miss having you around in the day, but I can't make myself go into the temple unless I have to. I would hunt, but I've got more meat than I can eat and more skins than I know what to do with.'
'I cannot believe you do nothing,'
'Sometimes I watch the humans. It is funny how long I can go before they notice me.'

>'That sounds fun. We could do that now.'
>'I didn't know you were that bored. Maybe we should both move somewhere covered but out of the desecration area'

As I said I didn't think it was wise, but there is nothing we can do now.
Well we might try to find "cure" for the vampirism once we are immortal , but not before.
>>
>>43002951
I kind of assumed you did, pretty sure I worded it as 'take the spell down for the duration of the feast' or something

'That does sound dreadfully dull.'
'Oh, I do not know. They fight for the strangest reasons and are really terrible at it. Sometimes it's fun. Sometimes they talk about the weather the whole day.'
'O, my love, what have I done to you that you would find the pitiful humans fascinating.'
'Shut up.'
'Nay, I must speak my sorrow at how lowly I have treated you,'
Melandie laughs.
'On a more serious note, I've noticed some changes in the way I think,' you say and Melandie immediately looks serious, 'I do not believe it is anything major, but I think it might be a good idea for me to read up on mental discipline.'
'Right. I'd been planning to do that myself. Except, you know. Spooky magic circle. And I cannot really read that well.'
'Right, I almost forgot, your control issues,'
'Oh shut up, you didn't forget it and you don't need to be nice about it,'
'All right, I see now that I cannot deceive one as wise and fair as you, O Melandie,'
'Shut up before I punch you for real this time.'
'Very well, shall we go then?'
'Er, would you mind getting the books and bringing them here?'
'Oh. Right. Of course.'

You might have thought of that before, but you should have. Nonetheless, it is a quick trip to the library and back and you are back at the campsite with half a dozen likely tomes within half an hour. You sit with Melandie and read aloud the instructions from the books that you have found.

It can be removed more permanently if you wish, when Vlad is back.

Nat 20! Lathrien has learned Discipline 1, Unnatural 20! Success. Melandie has learned Discipline 0 and will increase it further on her own.

The wording is abstract and complex, but for some reason it quickly makes sense to you. What you had thought of as mental discipline is much more about discerning and managing your emotions, than it is about forcibly changing your thoughts.

'Well, no shit, that's what I've been saying. It's not like I make a well reasoned decision to go fucking mental and murder a fucking tribe.'
'Yes, but, Melandie, I think I am starting to understand. It is kind of like magic, except without the magic.'
'I didn't hear the part where it said we should wave our hands around and make silly noises.'
'No, I mean about the focus and control. I guess I have kind of been doing this already, but it was always to draw magical energy, not to look at my thoughts. I'll keep reading and try it out.'

You sit there and read and eventually Melandie seems to be starting to understand it. You sit down comfortably, much like you would for a Shamanistic ritual and you focus your mind. You reach for your magic almost instinctively, but you dismiss it this time. And you see yourself, as if for the first time. You know what lies within your heart from a detached and sensible position, and you know exactly what you should worry about, what darkness hides inside your soul now and what light destroys it. You open your eyes and there are tears streaming down your face.

'Melandie, sit opposite me. Hold my hands,' She smiles and does as you say.

You return to the meditative state and this time you feel Melandie's presence with you. It is not like you can read her mind, or to see her from the same place of detachment that you can yourself, but her presence is almost overwhelming in the trance. You sit there for at least an hour before you feel like awakening.

You dress yourself and sit up. You cannot fall asleep and even if you could you could not risk waking up in the morning.

>The elves have learned Meditation. At any time when they have at least half an hour of free time they may meditate, calming and focusing their mind and dulling the more dangerous part of their natures. Furthermore, Lathrien has increased the number of undead he can control while in a trance from Max+ 1/2 to double the maximum.

'You're serious, aren't you?'
'I mean, sure. There's a steady supply of stone already, and I'm sure after whatever Vlad does in the dwarven lands there will be even more of it and cheaper, and I've got my own workforce. We could build closer to our old tribe, so maybe we could visit from time to time.'
'The old man was the only one worth visiting. Who are we going to go see? Arofel? The new elder, whatever the fuck his face is?'
'We could help them. We could change the tribe completely. We have so much time, and we should do what we can for our people.'
'We should do what we can for our people,' Melandie repeated in a squeaky voice.
'Look, that does not matter. We could have a place. Just for the two of us. The forest will always be just outdoors if you want it, and the temple will not be far away either.'
'Hmm. It does sound nice. And I think I would not mind spending more time with you. Of course, I might change my mind after I actually try it. You can be so infuriating.'
'Love, do not get this wrong, but grey stone can be infuriating to you.'
'Well it shouldn't fucking be where I'm putting my feet in the middle of the night,' Melandie said, but she smiled afterwards.
'Should I see about the construction then?'
'Mmmhm. Yes, do it for me.'
'Good, I will.'

You talk about nothing much important for several hours after that.

Damn. Good ol' elven awareness.

You are in quiet chatter when Melandie indicates with her head towards your left. You keep talking and follow her direction and see a few elves skulking in the darkness. They appear to be trying to get closer to the temple. As they reach the zone of desecration one of them nearly faints.

'Amateurs' mouths Melandie.
'Recognize them?' you say under your breath.
'Think it's our tribe.'
'What I thought.'

Melandie, what are you doing?
Melandie pls.

You disappear into the shadows. The other elves seem to you loud and clumsy by comparison. You get near to them, close enough to smell their blood.

'I will go no closer, this place is cursed.' you hear a 'hushed' voice.
'Of course it's cursed, you know who lives here.'
'So why the hell are we even trying to spy on Vlad Tepish?'
'Shhh. Do not say that out loud. Anything could be listening.'
'All I'm saying is, he seems to be a pretty decent man.'
'Look, I don't mind him. But I don't want to argue with the elder, so here I am.'

They are all wielding simple short bows. The arrows are bone-headed and there is not much stopping power in the bows. There is only three of them and they have no back-up weapons.

A dozen paces to your left you hear a squeal of a rabbit or a rat and then 'Shit!' from Melandie. The elves turn and one of them screams seeing your face not six feet away from him for the first time.

The other two jump and try to turn and draw their bows at the same time. They are only partially successful, but clumsy enough to give you time to speak.

>This is not the time to risk diplomacy. Use magical hypnotism instead

You do not lose your mind. You see that it was a flesh wound and that Melandie will be fine. You disappear into darkness once more.

You simply look at the other two. They flee.

Grab the last guy by the collar and make it very, very clear that we do not approve of this kind of bullshit. Then let him run back to his elder and explain that this whole thing was a bad idea.
>>
'Mel, are you alright?'
'I am fine, and nobody calls me Mel, not even you.'
'Let me have a look.'
'I'm fine!'

You look at the elf writhing on the ground, holding on to his crotch. You look into his eyes and focus just a little bit of your power.

'You want to stay here, do you not? It hurts, and you are safe for now. Just stay here,' you say and your words take on a strange, honeyed and entirely inhuman tone.

You rush over to Melandie and the smell of blood hits you like... Well, Melandie has caused feelings in you quite like this one, but certainly not by bleeding. Your mind is focused and your worry for her well-being far outweighs your bloodlust.

She does seem to be actually fine. If the wound is cleaned out well there should be no problem with the healing. It might leave the scar on her right biceps, but it should not impede her in any serious way.

'You should clean it out,'
'Oh, really, because I was planning to roll around in bear shit.'
'Melandie?'
'S- Sorry, Lathrien. Pain still does... weird things to me.'
'I understand. What should we do with that guy?'
'I doubt he knows anything. You know how new leaders are, all about proving their cock's the biggest or whatever. Probably just sending them out to have something to do.'
'Still though. Do you think we should just let him go?'
'Maybe we do an then you follow him back, see what is going on?' she says, in human tongue.

>'Sounds good to me. Except that I cannot be sure he'll make it there before morning. Could you do it?'
>'Sounds good to me, except that I cannot be sure he'll make it there before morning. Let's hold him for now and let him go sunset tomorrow, I can follow him then.'

Pretty slow going tonight, though I'm having quite a lot of fun. Might do a cut in 2-3 updates and resume in the morning if the thread is still up.

'Not tonight. There is not enough night left and I do not want to be outside when the morning comes.'
'Can we keep him for a full day?'
'Yeah, I think I can quite easily convince him it was his idea.'
'Fucking magic.'
'I would never!'
'Whatever. Okay, so, what's the plan for now?'
'It would be ideal if Vlad showed up. If he doesn't I follow him tomorrow at sunset when I let him go.'
'Sure. Shouldn't you be getting back to the temple pretty soon anyways?'
'I guess it is getting towards the morning.'

You convince the elf to wait the next day out. You do return with some alchemical solutions made to better clean out wounds. Melandie berates you for risking your skin for something like that, but she takes the medicine. You read and meditate for the duration of the day and you set out with the scout back to your old tribe.

You are getting close when you notice the added look-outs. The security is certainly much higher than it was back when you were still living here. Hell, you remember bitching about lax security back then. It will make the trip a little bit more dangerous. You could be spotted if you got unlucky, the elves do have exceptional eyesight, even in the dark.'

25! Easy.

It is all too easy. They are good, of course, you knew that all along. You are, however, superb. You follow, all but invisible, and you are annoyed by how slow the elf is even as you do. He reaches the clearing and is greeted by some very concerned elves. Most of them are, however, more angry at him than anything.

'Report!'
'Yes, elder. Euhm, we were ambushed. Like, this Lathrien fellow just came out of nowhere and hit us.'
'Did he attack you unprovoked?'
The elf pauses for a second.
'Y-yes. We were there, just minding our own business, when he came out of darkness and hit us.'
'So I see. Of course, it is their land they can defend it. But it is clear that open aggression is the form of defence they prefer. Now now, they are still our friends. But we should be prepared for their treachery.'

You notice that the elder is not getting any applause.

You walk towards the center of the tribe, where the two are talking and you pass by your former friends and allies without them even noticing you exist. Only when you break the circle around the light do the other elves notice you properly.

'Spy, coward and a liar it would seem.'
'W-what?'
'You lie, you are a fiend and you are unworthy to call yourself my kin,' you've been talking under your breath so far. The man is pale with fear and you speak up, 'Tribesmen. This man was spying on my teacher. And so he is a spy. He ran away from the fight as soon as he could, and so he is a coward. He loosed an arrow at Melandie, the very same, and so you know he is a fool.'

'I- we had a vote, just like we always do.'
'Who even are you, I barely know you and I was apprentice to your predecessor,'
'I am Amyr and that I am the elder is all you need to know,'
'Is it though?' a much older elf says, the one you pointed out as Milathril.
'The rite of voting is sacred, Milathril. I won it and so I lead.'
'I do not see how,' another one of your candidates says. Alofel.

Crusing this ass with our vampiric powers wouldn't really make us popular.

At the moment I am a little torn between Milathril, and ourselves.
How did we wound up with Vlad again? Are we still technically part of the tribe? Were we ever meant to return? Does our vote count?
Can we call a revote on account of us not being able to vote back then?

Good question. This guy certainly is not treating you as a part of the tribe. The previous elder would certainly have welcomed you back.

'If you do not mind me interfering, might I ask how the vote was conducted?'
'Yea, tell him, Amyr,'
'It was conducted as is proper, there were stones for each candidate and most ended up being mine,'
'Tell him when this happened,'
'I do not see how it is relevant,'
'You do not see how the fact that half of our tribe was not present, visiting an ally and a friend is relevant?'
'You will not talk to me like this.'
'Ah, that explains it. You stole the seat while those who had come to Vlad's feast had not returned yet. How did you even know him dead?'
'Do you have to ask, boy, after what brought you here,'
'Ah. Of course. Spies.'
'Some. And there is rumor he has been practicing divination.'
'A foolish rumor about a dead school of magic!'
'Much that has been dead for millenia is raising from the grave these days.'
'Your leadership is collapsing, surely you see it Amyr. We should have a re-vote.'
'No. There has been no such breach of protocol in a thousand years.'
'You do know that SOME of us were around to see it last time. Things got bloody before they got back to normal.'
'Indeed. I would not like to repeat the experience, but if I must I shall,'
The elves are all awake now, and neighbour is looking at neighbour with ill intent in their eyes. There could be bloodshed here, and not just of the elf who challenged you and Vlad Tepish.

'Surely, if you are confident in your position there is no harm in another vote of confirmation,' you say.
'But, but the tradition...'
'The tradition is that the whole tribe decides, not a pack of your cronies,'
'You- you are not even a part of the tribe anymore,'
'Says who exactly,'
'Say I!'
'Ah. One foolish decision after another it seems. Indeed there needs to be a vote of confidence.'
'But- I won.'
'Victory is the easy part, believe you me. I have taken part of it often in my recent company.'
'No, no, no, no, no! Before you came here no one was against me, you must be using magic on them!'
'Oh don't embarrass yourself.'
'No! I- You cannot- I will not have it, there will be no vote!'

Both Lathrien and Vlad Tepish get through to the elves... eventually.

22. Easy.

'But he can. Or, I suppose he cannot for you kicked him to the curb, but I can.' says Milathril.
'Yeap. And I reckon Lathrien should get the vote too, seeing as we are voting to decide the competence of this elder we have now.' Says Amythrien
'I will third that motion.'
'Fourth.'
'Fifth.'
'Pretty sure there ain't no reason to go beyond seconding,'
'F- well fine. We will have the vote the first thing in the morning,'

>'Fine. Have the vote. If Amyr is still elder by tomorrow night I will be coming back.'
>'No, we will have it now and I will take part in it.'

I like how Lath was shadowrunning almost as hard as /tg/ earlier in this thread.

Stop saying Shadowrunning man, we are necromancers.

'Very well. So long as the vote is carried out I shall not bother you any more. I would like to be part of the tribe if someone sane wins this time around.'
'You're leaving? B-but you're the one who started this mess.'
'Bitch, if you do not let them hold a fair and honest vote I'll be the one who finishes it.'

You leave before Amyr can think of a comeback. It is too near dawn for you to rush back to the temple, but there are plenty of small caves, burrows of animals and even hollow trees you could stay the night. You choose an abandoned bear den and spend the day in it.

As night falls you leave, and then you return to the temple. Vlad Tepish is not returned yet.

I don't know what else to do with Lathrien. I've been planning him and Melandie to take over their tribe, and we have one more race that's willing to cooperate towards prosperity, i think vampirism blew that to smithereens.

What happened to the skull of that person from the underwater race?

Having averted a possibly serious diplomatic incident between Vlad Tepish and your old tribe you relax some. You read and you practice, and you slowly become more and more powerful.

You read up on construction also, and have your minions start working on the site for your new home. Sometimes you just about feel you can see through their eyes as you direct them from the darkness inside the temple.

It is not much longer until Vlad Tepish returns, and a hundred strange new creatures follow him. You are not surprised, and assume that Vlad saved them from some terrible fate and that they are now forever grateful to the man.

You have done all you can on your own. You are no leader, but you are lucky to have a man as great as Vlad Tepish to follow. You greet him, update him on the situation here and life goes on, even after death.

And that is where the Twenty Eight installment of Feral Necromancer Quest concludes.

It is a bit short, but the story's over. Vlad Tepish has acquired 3 exp off-screen for a total of 4. Both you and Melandie have gained 2 exp each. Spend it as you will.

Was given a homunculus body and is now travelling back and forth between the Mer city and the tribes on the surface. She has visited your human village before, but Vlad was never around to meet her.

We going on to the next arc or just the end of the thread?

Save the exp, we need two more for Shamanism.

Bank exp for Vlad by the way.

Did you improve Lath's diplomacy with that nat 1?

If we put totems around our turf, could we give them exeptions about who they shouldn't zap?
or could we activate and diactivate them at will?

Would curse totems decrease stats only as long as people are in it's vicinty?
Same with disease totems?

I'd like to be rid of that desecration. I'm already worried what influences the necromantic energies have on Vlad's unborn.
