The Salvaged Sherman fires a beam of heat. Even if it wasn’t aimed right at you, you could feel the extreme heat right on your skin. The snow beneath it melts into water quickly. And the target, one of the Tiger tanks, immediately disintegrates into a pile of ash underneath the intense fire. “Oh shit, oh shit! Back up, back up!” The remaining Tiger tanks reverse out of their fall back positions, continuing to retreat beyond the crest of the hill and out of sight.

“Where are you going, cowards!?” yells Greta. The Sherman turns its turret down on Greta, and immediately the barrel begins glowing. It’s about to fire again.

“Greta!” you yell. “Forward!”

She blinks, then immediately turns around and projects several thick layers of shields in front of her. The beam finds its mark. But all it does is shove Greta right into the ground. It stops firing, then its legs shove right into the ground. Out of the ball that is the body of the Salvaged Sherman, more turrets of older model Shermans pop out. They fire off red pulses of fire, shooting everywhere and pinning all of you into your holes.

“We can’t take on something like this!” yells Aurelia. “We need to run!”

“No!” you scream. “We lose this hill, they go right on by and the army’s entire flank caves in! We need to hold them here no matter what happens!”

“I’m with the Kid!” Thorn pops out of her hole and throws a grenade at the Sherman. It bounces off the turret and explodes harmlessly. But it succeeds in gaining the great big Sherman’s attention. The turrets all turn to her, then immediately pelt her position with her fire. “We have to find a weakness or pin it down!”

“What about the air support?” Rascal asks quietly. “Where are they?”

“They’ll signal off with green flares, we just need to hold until they arrive!” you say. You poke out of your trench then quickly assess the situation.

You have an Improved Salvaged Sherman to fight. It’s got three turrets, all of which are currently suppressing Thorn on the left flank. Behind Thorn in another trench is Rascal, who is trying to plink away at the Sherman’s armor to no avail. Aurelia as well tries firing shots but can’t find any chinks in the armor. Greta has been stunned but is okay, and she currently possesses the ONLY weapon here that has a chance of breaking open that Sherman. As for the Tigers, they have wisely retreated behind the hill.

Alright. Like one of your war film reels back home. What should you do?

> Rally the Tiger tanks, you need as much firepower as you can bring in
> Get Greta into a good position to crack the armor
> Find the biggest gun in the back you can and try to suppress the Sherman, at least pin it so it won’t go any further

> Get Greta into a good position to crack the armor

You fire up the engines in your Striker Unit. You’re going to have to be fast. You’re going to need speed! You roll out of your trench at a blazing twenty miles an hour! Okay, you’re not going fast but you’re going faster than usual. Greta is busy trying to gather herself from that stunning blow from the Sherman, and once you’re up to her you pick her up and stand her up. “Get up! We gotta go!” You grab her wrist and start dragging her up the hill.

“Kid, look out!” yells Rascal. You look back to see the Sherman focusing its attention on you. Oh no.

The attention is suddenly diverted by a shell exploding off of its hull. Rascal slams the bottom end of a mortar shell onto a metal plate and throws it. It explodes harmlessly, but certainly shakes the Sherman out of focusing on you. “This had better work,” mutters Rascal.

“Ha, nice one, Rascal!” shouts Greta. “Give it all she has!”

“Come on! Enough shouting!” You pull her up behind a wall of sandbags on the crest of the hill. “Here, start firing!” She nods, reloading her tank cannon and aiming. “Put a hole in those legs first, we got to immobilize it!”

“Got it!” A shot pierces right through the left legs, buckling them. The Sherman is sent falling down on its side, crushing one of the turrets. It’ll regenerate those blown legs soon but not the Sherman turret. Anything that’s not original Neuroi will not regenerate. You have to keep blasting off the Sherman pieces to even have a fighting chance. It starts trying to crawl to the side, trying to right itself as the legs start to regenerate.

“Aurelia, Thorn, keep firing!” They give a thumbs up, and then start pelting the downed Neuroi with accurate suppressive fire. Their shots ping and deflect off the hull, but it’s better than nothing. “Rascal!” You point down the hill, noting the advancing Neuroi horde. “Buy us some time!” She nods, speeding off to the back to find something to block the horde from coming to the rescue. “Greta!”

She responds by blasting a hole right through the hull. The hole regenerates as fast as you can blink. “I got it!” she says.

Your handie-talkie crackles to life. “Hello? Hello? Is anybody there? This is the 509th JFW, we are twenty minutes out from your location, is anybody receiving?” Oh thank God, air support! You quickly rip the handie-talkie off of your belt.

“Thank God you’re coming, we’re being overrun! You need to speed up because we’ve got a really big Neuroi closing in on us!”

“Alright, alright, stay calm!” the radio operator yells. An air witch. Of course. Probably not very educated on what exactly you’re facing here. “We’ll be deploying green flares ahead of our advance to signal our arrival! Ground units are about an hour behind us! You have to hold out for just a little-“ The radio starts crackling. No, static! Ugh, the Neuroi are jamming your communications!

“Sergeant!” Aurelia yells at you, pointing northbound to a flying swarm of Butcherbirds. “The Neuroi are bringing in air cover!” That air cover is nothing compared to a competent group of Air Witches but they’re going to be slowed down. And if you don’t keep the Sherman down, it’ll get right back up!

“We’ll take the Sherman! You change up position and get those fighters!”

Aurelia salutes, then leaps out of her foxhole and speeds up the hill. You switch positions with her, ending up in her foxhole now with her on top of the hill with Greta. Once she’s all set and prepared, she begins making accurate and deadly shots against the fighters, shooting them down one by one. Not quick, but certainly thinning their numbers out. The more she shoots down, the more time she buys for the Air Witches to come and save you.

You shudder a bit. Air Witches saving you. Nobody’s going to let you live that down.

“Kid, watch out!” Without Aurelia’s heavy firepower though, the legs of the Sherman starts regenerating faster. You try to pelt it with .45 ACP from your Tommy Gun. But it all succeeds in doing is making little ineffectual fires on the hull and metal. Damn it! At least the turret on your side of the Neuroi is dead otherwise you’d be dead meat. Thorn yells at you to get down.

And after a dive down to the floor, your ass suddenly feels the heat of a thousand suns. Ice, snow, and water flies all over you. That could have been a lot worse. Once you feel the heat dissipate, you stand back up and fire out another burst. Thankfully this time it was looking away for just a second. Perfect time for that burst to hit it right in the central turret. It immediately turns back to you, and lifts up one of its newly regenerated legs. Uh oh. You jump out of the foxhole, just in time to beat the stomping foot. It lifts another leg, trying to crush you again, only for its leg to be blown off.

“Ha!” Rascal yells, holding an M18 Recoilless Rifle over her shoulder. “Get going, Kid!” You quickly stumble back onto your feet and speed away to more cover. The Sherman stumbles, now down to three good legs as it tries to target Rascal. But Rascal is a lot more smarter than that. She speeds off, faster than anybody else here. You don’t even see where she went. This Sherman is trying to do a lot of things at once is completely failing to do so. So it actually starts backing away.

“Goddamn it!” yells Thorn. “He’s getting away!”

“Get up, get up!” You hop out of your trench, briefly taking a bit to rub your burnt butt. “We gotta go after him!” You start pelting him with your Tommy Gun, making no good contact on his hull. But it’s enough to send him walking back faster and faster. Big mistake because the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Another recoilless rifle shot shatters another leg, sending it sprawling into the snow. It starts rolling over, folding up into its ball form. “Hit while it’s down!”

Greta fires another shot, sending a shot smashing right through the hull. This time, it blows open another hole, blowing out of the turrets. It opens up again, flaring out into a death blossom. It produces one last Sherman turret, the turret from a 105 model, and fires one last shot. All it does is knock up snow and dust against all of you. “We got him!” yells Thorn.

The central Sherman turret pops up, and fires a big burst of hot fire right at Greta. “Whoa!” She’s blasted right off the hill. She screams as she goes flying back.

“Greta!” you scream. No!

“I’m okay-“ Her communication is cut off by her meeting the ground. You can hear spitting and sputtering. “I’m okay! I’m okay!”

“Everyone focus on that hole!” All of your gun fire and AT rifle shots fly right into the hole. Its regeneration power cannot match your firepower now. Wherever that Neuroi core is, it’s bound to be somewhere that you can hit. But over the stricken body of the big Neuroi unit comes more and more drones, Largos and even bigger tank Neuroi drones. They’ve caught up!

Suddenly green flares fly right through the sky. The horde is blasted to pieces by a wave of cluster bombs, shattering them all into millions of pieces. The Sherman tries to fight it off, trying to limp back. You look up to see the Air Witches, blasting the ground units with amazing firepower. One of the slower ones fires a bazooka shot right into the hole you made, blasting it apart from the inside and destroying it for good. Something compels you to shout, throwing up your gun and your helmet into the air. The Neuroi are being driven back! Thorn throws up her arms in celebration, Aurelia coming over to hug her from behind. Rascal bounces up and down for joy.

You did it! You held the hill! You watch as the Air Witches blast apart the Neuroi formations, sending them fleeing back to the Hive. The Hive is also now falling back, slowly but surely. You’ve won!

-

“Maxine Bucholz.” The Air Witches dismounted from their Strikers as the new ground reinforcements rolled in. The lot of you stood by the road as reinforcements came to occupy the scorched and desolate hill you fought so hard to keep. The big Karlslander witch smiles as she shakes your hand. “Not bad for a tanker.”

Greta folds her arms, looking upon Bucholz skeptically. “Excuse me? We didn’t arrive late to the fight like you always seem to do.”

“Scheduling issues,” says the Flight Sergeant, wearing a walkie-talkie on her back. She brushes her curly hair back a bit and smiles at all of you. “But we are now available for the push into Orussia! I do believe that we will be able to throw out the Neuroi singlehanded!”

Thorn squints at her. “You what? Swear, I will show you a mean spanking!” Thorn slaps your back, surprising you. “Courtesy of our new Sergeant!”

“Yeah!” Aurelia pumps her fist. “If you’re just here to show off, we’ll happily do the real work for you!” Bucholz rolls her eyes as the Flight Sergeant looks upon all of you condescendingly.
>>

[3/3]

“Ohoho, cute, all of you,” she says.

Bucholz looks over at her Squadron, who all appear ready to have a fight in the name of the unit’s pride. “Well, I must go debrief with Colonel Hessler. The rest of you take a break. We will need to establish forward air superiority within the area by tonight.” And with that, Bucholz leaves. The rest of the witches murmur and gossip as they go elsewhere to take a break. Your own tank witches as well stare back at them, skeptical, even hateful, but alas they leave you too.

That just left you and the Flight Sergeant. She quirks her brow with the same haughtiness that you’d expect from any other Gallian. “So, Sergeant already? You’re barely bigger than I am!” She pats your head, grinning. “If you want, I could teach you a thing or two about leadership!”

“Yeah, thanks, but no thanks,” you say. You slap her hand away. “Besides, I’m a big girl now. I’m not a kid like you are.”

“Please!” She rolls her eyes with a disgusted expression. “I have been fighting for longer than you and I am still treated like a rookie.”

“Maybe it’s because you act like it,” you mutter.

She wags your finger at you, glaring at you. “Ooh! You!”

“Did your mother never spank you as a child? I’d be happy to do it for her.” Obviously this young little Rookie needs a lesson in manners. And you’d be more than happy to lay an imprint of your hand on her buttcheek if it teaches her that.

“Ha!” She turns around, shaking her hips a little. With that a butt that pure and untouched as the day she was born, obviously she must have been spoiled. “Well, I must go and assist the Commander with her debriefing! Keep up the good work, tanker!” She turns her nose up, acting like she owns the place. You correct that with a swift smack to the buttcheek. She yelps, holding her buttcheek which now has a red mark of your hand on it. “How dare you!?”

You hold up your hands, looking around. “I’m sorry. Did I do that?”

“You-!” She huffs, storming away. “You’re on notice for that!” she yells as she walks away.

“Typical Air Witches.” Thorn chews on what appears to be some form of beef jerky. It certainly seems more like rubber than beef though, stretching and contorting but never breaking underneath the strain of her teeth. “We do all the hard work, then they swoop in, get all the credit and the medals. Did you know they credited that Sherman kill to the little Orussian girl they got with them?” All of you are sitting around a mess hall table, recently set up as the outpost now becomes a Forward Operating Base in the face of the Neuroi attack. The frontline is now shifting in your favor.

“Oh come on!” Rascal pouts heavily. “Stealing kills is my thing!” She rips and tears at a pair of trousers that she stole from one of the air witches. A black side-tie little piece. “Who do they think they are!?”

“Calm down, calm down.” Greta munches down hard on her face, spewing food as she speaks. “You all are getting worked up over nothing! They are witches like us. We should respect their ability!”

“Weren’t you the one who started it?” asks Aurelia. Greta coughs, silenced by her own hypocrisy.

“Well.” Greta motions to you, sipping on your chocolate milk. “The Kid seems to think we should put it past us. Right?”

“Agreed,” you say. “As haughty as the Air Witches are, we have a job to do and I-.”

Aurelia squints at you. “Where did you get that chocolate milk?”

“That’s not important,” you say. “What’s important is that-“

“Can I have some chocolate milk?” asks Greta. “It’s been forever since I’ve had some.”

“No. Look-“

Rascal raises her hand. “I can steal you some chocolate milk.” Greta grins, happily hugging Rascal like a teddy bear.

“Where did you even get that chocolate milk?” asks Thorn.

“I’m trying to speak, dang it!” You slam your glass of chocolate milk on the table, silencing them. “Look! It doesn’t matter how I got my chocolate milk or how Rascal got hers.” Rascal had suddenly found a glass of chocolate milk for herself and Greta. “What matters is that we are going to work together with the Air Witches. And we are going to win this war. And we are going to all go home, have ourselves a nice life, boom, done! None of this rivalry stuff, we are in this together!”

“I hope you’re right,” says Thorn. “The Neuroi have been getting real squirrelly lately.”

“It’s the dying throes of a once great superpower.” Greta folds her arms, scoffing at the thought of the Neuroi forcing their selves back into the war. “The Kid is right, we will work with them. It’s not like they’ve done anything except steal the credit yet.”

“Hmph.” Thorn grimaces at the thought of it. “Well, whatever happens, happens I suppose.”

“Where did you get the milk?” asks Aurelia. You sigh, rolling your eyes.

“Logistics,” you say. “I can get anything.”

Aurelia grins, her eyes suddenly filling with stars of hope. “Can you get me a gown?”

“No.” Her grin immediately drops, and the stars shatter like glass. “Sorry.” You lean on the table. The adrenaline of combat has already left you now. It’s nothing but an afterglow of the thought of fighting. The battlefield is like your amusement park at this point. You really wish you could go back. But right now is rest. And it doesn’t look like the Neuroi will make another play for the hill.

“So. Our first time in combat!” Greta slams her fist on the table, grinning madly. “How do you think we did?” Oh? “Followed your oders, fought the Neuroi to a standstill for a day! That is not something you can claim to every day!”

“We’ll have to see what the superiors think of us.” You look up. Ugh, that means you have to write the after action report. And then you have to confirm today’s killcounts, and then… ugh. Busy work. “But we did okay for what it’s worth. You all did your parts, you followed my orders. And as far as we know, we kicked Roy in the teeth and sent him home to mom.”

“Here, here!” Greta clinks her glass of milk against yours, and everyone else applauds you. You can’t help but blush at everyone’s pride in you. It’s swelling up! You hope you don’t get a big head from this.

“Right, right, right, but here’s one thing though.” Thorn points to you, quirking her brow. “I think you have to consider what we did today, Kid. We held off an entire Neuroi army, and defeated an elite drone, all by our lonesome. That’s worthy of a medal!”

You scoff. “Come on! They don’t give us medals for everything, Thorn!”

-

-

“In light of the defense of the hill and in defeat of a numerically superior Neuroi foe including one drone which had been already confirmed to have killed twenty tanks and absorbed their shells into its body, we award you, Sergeant, with the Liberion Distinguished Service Cross.” The medal is pinned to your chest by Colonel Hessler. Your squad stands behind you in her new office, at attention, but trying to hold back knowing grins and laughter.

Yeah, real funny.

“I must say,” says Colonel Hessler. She smiles down on you, proudly. “You have performed admirably, beyond my expectations, Sergeant.” You nod, smiling up at her. “But know this. Your standards have been raised now. I expect more from you. Your squad can leave, we need to talk in private.” You nod, dismissing the squad. They all leave, mouthing congratulations to you as you sit down in Hessler’s chair across from her makeshift desk. The tent you’re in is a private one for Hessler and Hessler alone. And you perhaps. “So, how do you feel?”

[2/2]

“Good!” you say. “Just… good! It was a real thrill to finally be able to prove my worth as a Sergeant, Colonel. I’m glad you had faith in me.”

She nods, pulling her typewriter over and beginning a new after action report. “Though the kill of the Elite Sherman was credited to Vera Bjelik of the 509th JFW, the fact that you wounded it beyond all points of regeneration is no small feat.” She continues nodding a bit, leaning back in her seat. “Truly, Sergeant, I am proud of you.”

“Thank you.” You happily smile, bouncing in your seat a bit.

“But onto business.” She stops typing, looking you straight in the eye. “You’ll rest in the camp for a couple of days, and then you will join a smaller assault force coming in through this flank. We have understood that this side of Orussia is apparently vulnerable and we will need something to keep it secure. You will be part of that.” You nod, okay. Orders are orders. Remember everything. “Your air cover will be the 509th JFW, they will assist you. But overall command will be mine. That’s all for now, I will have more for you in the coming days.”

“Okay,” you say.

“One thing though.” She leans in, squinting. “The Flight Sergeant complained that you spanked her just an hour ago.” Oh. “And after witnessing you spank Private Abascal a day or two back, I wanted to ask you. Is this a regular thing with you?”

“I understand that it’s weird at best and depraved at worst,” she says. Ouch. “But, if it helps you discipline your troops, then perhaps I will allow it. Try to keep your hands however on your troops and not on people outside of your direct command.”

“Alright.” You nod. Okay, keep the hands on your own troops butts. Fair enough, fair enough. “Was there anything else, Colonel?”

“Not right now,” she says. “See me later tonight though, we’ll discuss the after action report.” You stand up, saluting. “Dismissed.”

Once you exit the tent, you sigh in relief. “Glad that’s over.”

“Hey!” You blink, then look over at two fellow Liberions coming over to you. Air Witches from the 509th. “You’re that Kid that spanked our Rookie right?” … ah jeez. She holds out her hand, smiling. “Rach. This here’s Daisy.” They smile at you, rather evilly. “You’ve got some stones, kid, I like that.”

“Oh, thanks.” You notice their silver bars on their collars. Lieutenants. Ah jeez. “Um. Well, I should be going now…”

“Hold on!” Daisy wraps her arm around your shoulders, leading you on. “We’d like to enlist you for a very quick operation. A stealth operation.” Stealth operation? “Into the Rookie’s quarters…” Um. “She’s been getting a little rowdy so we’d like for you to lay her down over your knee and give her a bit of the old one two, yeah?”

“Um.” You blink, looking at Rach. “Uhh…?
