You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division of the Seireitei Court Guard, and for the first time in years you've found yourself back at the Academy.

The cavernous lecture hall is buzzing with anticipation as students mill about the aisles, as the sudden appearance of a Captain is a rare opportunity for the students. You can sense the eagerness of this batch of raw rookies to prove themselves, and possibly to get admitted into a Division early. One, a blonde boy, seems familiar to you, and is chatting quietly with a mousy-haired girl standing next to him. The two from the Rukongai you dragged into the upper class are all the way back against the wall: a tall, red-headed young man with a widow's peak and a girl who looks more and more like Kuchiki Hisana the longer you look at her.

The blondie from the Kira family raises his hand.

“So, ma'am, why are you here... I mean, if you don't mind me asking?”

You shrug dismissively, harboring no intention whatsoever of giving him a proper answer. “I'm substituting for your regular instructor, Kira. Everyone get your ass in a seat so we can get started.”

Seemingly surprised at your tone, the students do as you ordered without argument or question.

Looking them over, you can tell how green most of them are. Few of them have seated officer potential, and you know from experience that even fewer of those will ever get a chance to meet that potential. Many will die on their first few missions, or else never find the drive to grow into their own abilities. It takes a special sort of person to reach the level of a Captain or a Lieutenant... but you may as well give these lot a chance.

I feel like it would be difficult for a captain to hold back enough to provide anything that they would be able to learn from, and summoning a hollow is Aizen tier dickery, so that's out.

Ask for a volunteer
We should also flatly tell them about that survival rate, and how one of the real reasons we organize our division the way we do is to give them the support structure to survive their initial missions.
So work your assistance off in the academy kids, then come to my division, I'll work you all into the ground all over again, and then you'll be ready to be a seated officer

With one hand you effortlessly create a giant brush using kidō, like the ones typically used in Shiba-style cannon techniques. Kūkaku showed you how to do this a while back, though not for this purpose. Instead you brace it against your shoulder and scribe a circle about ten feet across onto the floor, before tossing the brush aside and looking up into the rows of seats.

“I need two volunteers to...”

Abarai immediately springs to his feet, hand waving. “Ooh, pick me ma'am! I volunteer!”

You pinch the bridge of your nose and count to ten in your mind before responding. “You have no idea what I even want you to do.”

“Nevertheless, ma'am,” Abarai continues, “I volunteer to do it.”

“Then step up to the circle,” you sigh. “Kira, why don't you join him? You're about the right size.”

Slowly, the two young men join you in front of the class. Without warning, you hand an unsheathed sword to Abarai, who stares at you in confusion, then at the sword.

“Okay then, Abarai. This is an asauchi. I want you to try your hardest to kill me with it.”

The look of confusion on his face deepens as he furrows his brow.

“... excuse me, ma'am?”

“Don't worry,” you reassure him, “I could break that silly thing with my hairpiece. Just commit to your attacks like you expect 'em to do something, okay?”

After a moment to collect himself, Abarai aims a broad stroke towards you and delivers it with a shout. Despite his best efforts Abarai's swing stops abruptly against your raised arm, and the only blood dripping to the floor is from his own palms.

“What... the hell? I know that was a good swing...”

A brief pulse of your reiatsu nearly rips the sword from his hands as you force him backwards, then deliver a halfhearted strike to his solar plexus that slams the student into the nearest wall with a resounding crash.

>Many will die on their first few missions
Honestly, this bit was why I proposed adding armor to our men's equipment a while back. Not because I thought it would be directly useful against Aizen, but because it would allow more of them to scale the learning cliff without falling off and dying.

“Hakuda,” you explain to the stunned class as Abarai wobbles to his feet, “the use of reiatsu to empower physical strikes. One of the four basic combat arts of the shinigami, and among the most difficult to master. A requirement both for the Onmitsu and for any seated officers in my own Ninth Division."

"You still good to go, Abarai?" you ask as the student dusts himself off.

"I think so, yeah," he replies, though you can tell your punch took some of the wind out of his sails. In fact that was the entire purpose: he's now been weakened enough that he and Kira should be on an even footing.

You nod approvingly. "Good. Kira, Abarai, I'd like to see the two of you spar a bit empty-handed. I'll use the opportunity to point out your mistakes so the class can learn from them."

Issue with armor is that you often need to be strong enough to wear the armor and still move fast.

All the hollows do move fast in the series, being slow would be death.
>>
>>42996891
Thats why I was thinking of some kind of Kido infused cloth, or laminate plate type deal. Not Normal chain or scale, which i doubt would really help anyway.
Basically I dont think any normal armor would do the trick.

“This is how the Onmitsu often train,” you explain as the two students begin to exchange blows. “The point is to remain within the circle. It builds general awareness.”

Maybe you took more out of Abarai than you intended, now that you get a good look at them. Or perhaps he's just not as good at this as the noble brat... come to think of it, it's possible Kira's had some training for this sort of fight. The red-headed boy's certainly having enough trouble getting past Kira's guard that either could be the case.

“Watch your stance,” you interrupt, grabbing Abarai by the hips and correcting his posture. “And Kira, don't lean back so much. Just makes it harder to reach. And both of you, lighter on your feet! What if you wanted to mix in a kick?”

Those minor changes made, you immediately spot more problems. All the while, you see the two girls your volunteers were talking to watching intently.

“Kira, don't hang out your jabs, you're begging for a Golgi strike. Abarai, you're not focusing. You're supposed to be using your reiatsu, not just your muscles! Now you're leaning in, Kira, close with your feet! Abarai, you stepped back too far when you dodged. That's wasted energy.”

Finally, after about ten minutes or so in the circle, both trainees seem to be about out of energy.

“Alright, that's enough of that...”

“So, I assume you all at least know what kidō is?” you ask the class. If anyone doesn't, they don't speak up. It's possible some of them are also still intimidated that you blocked a sword with your bare hand... and actually hurt your attacker's hands instead of being injured yourself.

You nod. “Good. Does anyone know how to use it?”

A few hands go up, including the two girls you noticed before.

“Can anyone use a numbered hadō?”

A few hands go down.

“That isn't number one?”

All but the two girls' hands go down. Man, that's a pain.

“Well then, you two,” you sigh. “Come on down. You're Rukia, right?”

“Yes, ma'am,” the girl replies, avoiding eye contact.

You turn to the other girl. “And you are?”

“Hinamori, ma'am,” the brown-haired girl tells you quietly.

“Good, now can you two show me Byakurai?” you ask.

Hinamori looks around in a panic. “Wait... in here?”

You backpedal across the room in an instant. “Danku.”

The barrier leaps into existence, and Hinamori's eyes widen in delight.

“You can use Danku without an incantation!?” she practically squeals before managing to calm herself down. “And it's so powerful, too... there's no way I could get through that."

Both young women give the full incantation, which you hardly ever get to hear, and take aim at the barrier.

“Hadō #4: Byakurai!”

Hinamori's spell strikes the barrier, barely producing a weak popping noise. It was technically very good, but still massively underpowered. Rukia's spell simply goes off in her hands, managing to electrocute herself.

You lower the barrier. “That was pathetic,” you tell them, brushing a strand of hair out of your face. “Hinamori, you didn't put enough power into it. Apply yourself next time. Rukia, you were trying too hard and it backfired.”

“You've both got work to do,” you continue. “But at least it's a start. The rest of you have got even more catch-up to do than that.”

You decide that after that poor showing, you should try and maybe bolster their morale a bit with something they can be successful at. Maybe by teaching them a new spell that they could get their heads around.

“I'll be showing you something new,” you tell them after a moment's thought. “Bakudō #4, called Hainawa. It looks a little like this.”

You extend your fingers and a brilliant rope of energy bursts forth, grabbing Abarai around the chest.

“Renji!” Rukia shouts in alarm as you fire a similar rope at Kira, who's also far too slow to avoid being trapped.

Abarai struggles briefly against the binds. “I'm fine, Rukia... just... why me again?”

“And then,” you continue, using Hainawa to slam the two students together in midair. “You can combine the ropes to bind multiple targets in once place.”

Rukia still seems worried, but Hinamori is far too absorbed in watching the show to care.

Now... how to actually explain how it's done...

“Actually,” you admit, “I rarely have to think about these sorts of things. It's been instinctive for so long.”

With some help from Tenkotsuki, you manage to come up with an explanation for how kidō works. It's a clear mental image of what you want to achieve combined with proper control of your reiatsu and absolute concentration. The words of the incantation simply help a shinigami to focus, like a mantra repeated during prayer focuses the mind into a proper contemplative state, drawing on appropriate imagery to make the caster's vision a reality. With sufficient focus, control, and experience those words become unnecessary.

The students listen to your explanation, but very few seem to get it. The only people to make progress on Hainawa are Rukia, Hinamori, and the Kira boy, while most of the others are still struggling to manage the #1 spells.

Much to your surprise, Renji actually manages to use Sai and Shō within a half hour. Something about your explanation may well have clicked with him.

“Now then,” you interrupt as one of the noble-born students nearly blows his face off trying to do a Byakurai from his seat. “That covers two of the four arts.”

“This is my zanpakuto,” you announce, drawing Tenkotsuki from her sheath. “Each shinigami carries one such blade, or in extremely rare cases two. Each is a reflection of its wielder's soul, unique in its potential and abilities. It can take years to awaken one's zanpakuto, and years more to master its use.”

You then manifest Tenkotsuki herself at your side, to the astonishment of the class. Her many-layered kimono looks no less marvelous than usual.

“Each sword has two stages of release: shikai, and bankai,” you explain. “The first requires the wielder to be called into their own mind to speak with the sword, and to learn its name. The latter requires the wielder to manifest their sword into the world, and to subsequently defeat them.”

“This is Tenkotsuki, and she and I have been partners for around two centuries.”

You turn, and bow respectfully towards your sword. Tenkotsuki matches the depth of your bow.

“How would you like to proceed, Lady Riku?” she asks.

After a moment or two you make a decision. “Let's stick to the basics for now. They wouldn't be able to appreciate our best.”

Tenkotsuki bows again. “Do you have a specific style in mind? Perhaps the Jigen-ryu?”

“That'd be best,” you reply. “That's probably what they'll be taught from here.”

With nothing left to be said, you draw swords.

While keeping your attacks and defenses basic, your movements and Tenkotsuki's are smooth and graceful even by your own standards. You have to keep the speed down so that your students can actually see you moving: otherwise that'd defeat the purpose.

Steel clashes and sparks with each evenly-matched exchange, two partners completely in sync with each other in a deadly dance that lasts nearly ten full minutes: an eternity in combat, though it passes almost without your notice.

Eventually you and Tenkotsuki lower your blades, having run through every paired exercise in the Jigen-ryu school between individual bouts, thus covering all of the basics in one lesson.

“That's kenjutsu,” you explain. “The most basic aspect of zanjutsu, which you'll have to learn to execute your duties as shinigami. Jigen-ryu is very popular for its emphasis on power, which is great when dealing with enemies like hollows which should be felled in a single strike... ideally from behind.”

“Thank you, Tenkotsuki,” you bow to your partner as you sheath your blades.

She bows in return. “Of course, Lady Riku.”

After Tenkotsuki disappears, you turn to the class. “And for our final lesson, we'll mix things up a bit. First one to lay so much as a finger on me wins a free lunch on me at a fancy restaurant.”

“Begin!”

Several of the students in the first row charge you at once, and to their eyes you must simply blink out of existence for a moment as you use hirenkyaku.

“Oh, and you're going to have to use shunpo to do it,” you add, almost as an afterthought. “This is how I taught my kids... they're both geniuses, but I expect at least one of you will manage it too.”

The next few you don't even really have to use a rapid movement technique to dodge, as they're not even close to being fast enough to catch you just at your normal speed. In fact most of them couldn't catch you like this even with shunpo.

Renji makes a valiant effort, so you allow him to think he's won for a moment as you use Utsusemi to escape.

“Gotcha!” he shouts, only to hear the tinkling of your silver hairpiece behind him.

You knock him flat with a flick of your finger. “Not quite, kiddo. Maybe next time!”

As you continue to evade each of the students' attempts to tag you, you begin to explain to them your past with the Onmisukidō. How Yoruichi, the “Goddess of Flash” herself recruited you to be her subordinate, how you quickly became her Lieutenant after mostly skipping over the Academy, how you learned shikai and Bankai in record time. Throughout it all you drop hints about how to perform shunpo, but none of the students seem to be able to manage it properly.

“Even with me holding back as much as I am,” you explain, “for one of you to actually tag me would be an amazing feat. So don't be disappointed if you can't do it. Just try and learn from how I move, that's the point of the exercise.”

You can feel it coming well before it arrives: one of the students manages to use a shunpo behind you, though it's painfully telegraphed and unrefined. You didn't even have to see it with your eyes. It's easy to simply duck under the outstretched arm, rotate in place, and grab your attacker by her wrist.

It's Rukia, and with one finger on the hand whose wrist you've grabbed, she manages to tap you lightly on your own wrist.

Huh.

“That...” you frown at Rukia, whose grin evaporates as she apparently starts to wonder if she's done something wrong. “That actually wasn't half bad. You earned your lunch.”

You dismiss the class, many of whom simply slump over in their seats from exhaustion, and turn to Rukia.

“It was sloppy, but you got me fair and square,” you tell her. “So I'm taking you to a properly classy restaurant.”

“I... okay,” she replies somewhat sheepishly. Either it's because you're a Captain or a noble, but she seems like she's a little uncomfortable with the concept.

“Thank you, ma'am.”

“You think you can manage a few more shunpo?” you ask her.

She nods. “I think so, Lady Shiba.”

To her credit, she manages a few more shunpo before she seems to tucker out. Thankfully that gets you pretty close to one of the nicer restaurants you know. It's frequented by Academy staff who are looking for a nice place to take a date or a guest.

“This place seems really expensive,” Rukia observes nervously.

You shrug. “Given how much I normally spend on food it's nothing. Don't worry about it, it's my treat.”

You lead Rukia into the restaurant, a high-class Catalan place, and order a large set meal for each of you. Though Rukia balks at the cost, she makes no effort to stop you.

“This is really good,” she admits once the food arrives. “Thank you, Captain Shiba. But I can't help but wonder why you've been so kind towards me and Renji.”

You shake your head. “I'm adopted,” you explain. “My name is Kusajishi Riku... like the district. Both my kids were from the Rukongai too.”

“I see,” she replies quietly. “It must be nice to be accepted into nobility like that.”

“It has its perks,” you admit. “But it doesn't change who I am.”

“Renji and I are from Inuzuri,” Rukia eventually admits. “We're the last two of our family alive.”

“I was fortunate,” you reply.

“So what do I call you, ma'am?” Rukia asks.

You shrug. “Lady Riku or Captain would be fine.”

A few moments later, your senses alert you to someone coming... someone powerful, whose reiatsu seems familiar.

“What is Byakuya doing here...”

Not really knowing what to say about the situation, you simply wait for Byakuya to come into the restaurant and sit down. When he looks over to your table he sees Rukia, and his response is to simply pause and stare. You frown and stare back. Rukia looks at you in confusion, then notices the Lieutenant staring at her.

“Lady Riku,” she asks quietly. “Why is that shinigami staring at me?”

You look Byakuya right in the eyes. He looks back at you, a probing sort of look.

“So, Byakuya,” you ask, “how are you doing?”

Byakuya quickly recovers. “Well, Lady Riku. Thank you for asking.”

“You getting ready to take your Captain's exam?” you ask, trying to tease out how he feels about Rukia's presence through his answers.

“I am,” he responds stiffly.

“I'm sure you'll do fine,” you nod.

“So who is this you're eating with?”

You wave casually at Rukia, who bows respectfully. “This is Rukia. She's a first-year at the Academy. I'm rewarding her for using shunpo this morning.”

“A new student?” Bakuya asks, evidently in honest surprise. “Impressive. Her name was Rukia, you said?”

“That's right,” you reply. “Rukia, from Inuzuki. And I know what you're thinking... it was my first reaction too.”

Byakuya rises to his feet, turns around, and walks right back out the door without explaining himself... though you know what's on his mind. The man looked like he'd seen a ghost, and to your mind that all but confirms it. The girl sitting across from you is almost certainly the lost younger sister of Byakuya's late wife, Hisana. You don't know what their circumstances might be, but you know that it must have unnerved him.

You can't say for sure what he's going to do now.

“That was strange, Lady Riku,” Rukia mutters. “What was that about? You said something about your first reaction?”

You briefly consider letting Byakuya simply deal with it how he likes... but at the same time, this concerns Rukia as well. And given Byakuya's position as the head of his house, you're not entirely sure how he's going to handle the situation. When you also consider the fact that he's still probably mourning Hisama's death, the situation becomes even more unpredictable.

This isn't like you. Your first instinct isn't to lie to someone who deserves to know the truth.

“Well,” you begin. “That was Kuchiki Byakuya, head of the Kuchiki clan. He was married to a young woman, Hisana, who passed away a few years ago.”

“And what does that have to do with me, Captain?” Rukia presses. “Please tell me.”

“Hisana... she was from the Rukongai,” you explain. “She also happened to have a sister who she lost before meeting Byakuya. Her sister's name was Rukia.”

“You look a lot like her.”

It takes a moment for Rukia to process the information. “So he thinks I'm... what? His sister in law?”

“I think so,” you tell her. “But you shouldn't say anything about it. I don't know what Byakuya's going to do from here, especially considering his position as the head of a noble clan. Aside from marrying Lady Hisana, he's always been a bit of a stickler for rules.”

“I see...”

“I'm really not sure what to tell you,” you admit, scratching lightly at your head. “Byakuya means well, but he can be a bit of a pain in the ass sometimes. I guess you just have to take things as they come, and do what you think is best.”

It isn't long before she has to make that choice. Byakuya makes Captain easily only a few weeks after meeting Rukia, and it's only a few months after that when Rukia is offered adoption into the Kuchiki clan: an offer she readily accepts. More astonishingly, she's offered an immediate posting in 13th Division under Ukitake and Kaien.

“It's like I said,” Rangiku sighs. “That Byakuya just wants her out of the way. I bet you he hasn't even explained why the poor girl's getting adopted in the first place.”

True enough. Taking Rukia out of the academy early would guarantee her a low seat, and Ukitake would probably keep her out of trouble. Short of promoting her into Sixth and watching her obsessively, it's the tightest leash Byakuya can keep her on.

“That moron,” you sigh. “Rangiku, kindly go sic Yoruichi on his dumb ass, tell her exactly the circumstances.”

Rangiku flips you a mocking salute. “Yes, ma'am!”

“What a pain in the ass,” you grumble.

Not long after Rangiku disappears, a messenger from the First Division appears in your office.

“More bad news, I take it?”

The man stares at you in confusion. “Not exactly, Lady Shiba.”

“Then spill it,” you state flatly. “I could use some good news.”

“You've been requested as a proctor for the Captain's Examinations for Lieutenant Ichimaru, ma'am. The examinations will take place tomorrow at the Sōkyoku hill.”

Well, ain't that interesting...

"Indeed," Tenkotsuki muses in the back of your mind. "Your boy has grown quickly, to be a Captain at his age."

“I'll be there,” you reply firmly.

Sure enough you're present at the Sōkyoku hill bright and early alongside the Head Captain and Kenpachi, of all people.

“Why do I have to be here?” Kenpachi grumbles. “It's too damn early for something this dull.”

“It is precisely that attitude I am trying to eliminate,” Yamamoto growls in response. “You should be more mindful of your formal duties, lest you be compared to your predecessor.”

“We wouldn't want that,” you yawn. “Man's idea of 'justice' apparently didn't include duty.”

Kenpachi shrugs and pops his neck. “I'd just hate bein' compared to a weakling like that. Guess I hafta put up with this... what a drag...”

Finally, Gin puts in an appearance. Late, as usual, which is a fact that doesn't escape the Head Captain.

“Sorry,” Gin bows repeatedly. “I got pulled off into one of Captain Aizen's pep-talks. I know the man means well and all, but there's only so many anecdotes that can apply to a situation... and he insists on not missing any.”

“Very well,” Yamamoto growls. “We will begin the examinations forthwith. Show us what counts for genius these days.”

“Why don't you start simple,” you begin. “Show us your shikai.”

Dutifully Gin obeys, drawing his sword as he takes several paces away from you and positioning it carefully.

“Impale them, Shinsō!” he declares, and the tip of Shinsō's blade comes rocketing forward towards your face. You easily dodge by tilting your head to one side, the sword sailing past your left ear into the distance.

“You've still got your legendary speed, Lady Shiba,” Gin smiles. “I thought people were supposed to grow slower as they aged?”

“I'm not that old yet, boy,” you grumble as Gin's sword retracts again. You're plenty familiar with this attack, and Gin knows it. He's probably very much conscious of the image he's projecting for the Head Captain as well... it's part of his plan, whatever that may be, to look like a smiling psychopath.

What is he thinking?

“My sword Shinsō,” Gin explains, “can extend to the length of a hundred swords, and does so rather quickly. I added distance to allow Lady Shiba to dodge more easily... guess I overdid it.”

“Or your heart just wasn't in it,” Kenpachi sighs.

“How scary!” Gin exclaims softly, scratching his head in mock innocence.

“And now a Bankai would be appropriate, right Head Captain?”

Yamamoto nods sternly. “Quite true, Captain. I assume this time it will not be aimed at your face?”

“Of course, of course!” Gin insists. “I was planning on aiming it at Captain Zaraki's face this time.”

Kenpachi raises an eyebrow. “Leave me the hell out of it, I haven't even had my mornin' pot of coffee yet.”

“Gee, you're no fun,” Gin grins. “So, I've already told you how long my zanpakuto extends in shikai, correct? How long do you reckon it extends in Bankai?”

You shrug. Your fellow Captains remain silent.

“It's thirteen kilometers,” Gin informs you, his grin growing even wider.

“Bankai: Kamishini no Yari.”

For a moment you see Gin's eyes open, the piercing blue visible for one rare moment as he slices a distant tower... you think that was part of Aizen's Division headquarters. A bell tower, from the sound of it.

“Huh,” Kenpachi shrugs. “Was that all?”

No... Kenpachi's wrong. Dead wrong.

Gin's sword doesn't just blow its Bankai on one extension. Judging by the feeling of his reiatsu he's still in Bankai. And the way his sword retracted again almost instantly... in close range, one little mistake could mean instant death against this technique.

It suits him perfectly.

“You saw it too?” Rosa asks. “Your boy... he has quite the nasty ability.”

“I doubt we have even seen its full capability,” Tenkotsuki muses in agreement. “A Bankai such as that... we cannot assume that we fully understand it after seeing it just once.”

As your son's eyes meet yours, you can feel a grin spreading across your own lips.

“What a lovely ability,” you compliment him. “Truly worthy of the name Bankai...”

You decide not to test any of your current theories about Gin's Bankai, much to Tenkotsuki and Rosa's frustration. Instead you press him on his current kidō abilities.

As it happens he learned Danku at some point, and is working on using it without an incantation, and knows hadō up into the mid eighties. That's easily at the level a Captain should be at, and everyone present aside from Kenpachi knows it.

“I see that Lieutenant Ichimaru is perfectly suited to take command of Third Division,” the Head Captain concludes. “All in favor?”

Kenpachi shrugs. “I wish his sword was more interestin', but I guess I'm not one who should complain. I'll support him.”

I think having our sword destroyed by that piss ant hollow that one time kinda made anons more cautious. I know it made me actually think about pick the answer I think would be best instead of which one I think would be the most fun.
>>
>>43003713

“He'll make a fine Captain,” you reply, before casting a glance at your son. “Don't make a liar out of me, boy.”

“I'm gonna go back ta bed,” Kenpachi moans before disappearing.

The old man yawns... shocking, he has the same weaknesses as normal people!?

“I slept rather poorly myself, so for once I concur with Kenpachi. I suppose a General must know his limitations... accursed old age.”

“You don't go anywhere,” you growl as Gin tries to leave.

“I guess you did get the message after all,” he smiles. “Shall we find someplace more secluded?”

You nod. “That would be good.”

As you head down towards the hidden training facility under the execution grounds, you're met by Yoruichi.

“Congratulations, Captain,” she grins.

“Thanks,” you and your son reply simultaneously.

You smack Gin lightly over the back of the head as Yoruichi laughs wildly. “So, what's the word on Rukia?”

“Well, that's the thing,” Yoruichi's grin widens. “I convinced Byakuya to let her finish her instruction, but there was a condition.”

“Which was...”

“That you had to take her instead of Ukitake.”

… great. That's exactly what you need, to have to babysit Byakuya's adopted little sister for the next hundred years or so.

“Why me?” you sigh.
