Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you tried to deal with the hole you ripped in reality and failed miserably!

It is currently the 19th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You meet the eyes of each one of your surviving Vatis. Forty-one of them in all. Some of them wear armor looted from the corpses of their enemies, others cheap leathers they brought from home. Some wear no armor at all, their clothing shredded and fresh scars visible where once they were wounded. Even though they might not be particularly skilled, and few of them have had any actual training, they're still Vatis. They're still your men.

You reach a decision after a moment's contemplation, reaching into your cloak and extracting the pouch of herbal poultice you bought from Ghada to help you heal a friend's scars. You always hate taking this stuff, but you'll be damned if it's not useful. Extracting a pinch of the foul-smelling and worse tasting substance you place it one your tongue, swallowing quickly. You think you might be starting to get a little used to the taste, but you're still struck by just how much it taste like dog shit smells.

You only have a minute at most before the drug begins to take effect, so you address your subordinates quickly. “We only have one chance to close this portal. If we don't succeed here, all of Pidjata is at risk. I am going to sink into a meditative trance and I expect-” You're interrupted by a frantic cry as the charging void creatures meat with your brother's spear wall. The clash is tremendous, and many are cut down in the first few moments, but ultimately the men hold.

To raise your voice above the clash you're forced to channel vys. Already the sand beneath your feet is starting to melt into a river of molten gold, your footing increasingly unsteady. “I expect all of you to meditate with me, channel as much of your vys into me as you possibly can. I will serve as a vessel to direct your power against the breach, and together we'll mend the veil between our world and theirs. Do this, and we walk away from today heroes.”

It is not a speech. Your voice lacks the zeal with which you previously delivered ad libbed lines to a crowd of unblooded peasants. You are met not with cheers, but grim determination. At least, that's what you see before faces begin to run together. Before blue becomes yellow and red becomes green. Before black appears white. You slump forward into the sands, falling face-first. The last thing you're truly aware of before fading from consciousness is someone rolling you onto your back.

Within your meditative trance the world appears thrown into immense chaos. Vys does not flow naturally as it ought to. Instead it gathers around the portal, leaving the rest of the land unnaturally drained of vys. The portal drinks it in greedily, but as a result of the confluence vys has been given physical form. Approaching the portal is to quite literally swim through vys. To breathe it in and soak oneself in the substance. It gathers in physical form, pervading the rock. That is what gives rise to the impossible formations of stone and glass which now cover the area.

The portal itself is a fascinating thing. Around the very edges you can barely see wispy strands of gold where reality's binding threads attempt to repair the breach. At every turn they're repelled, the portal growing steadily larger as time passes. It appears as an undulating black blemish upon the world, ringed around the edges by blinding white light. Curious then that each of the void creatures themselves are composed of that same blinding white light, vys, or perhaps the divine, in its purest form.

Power begins to flow steadily into you, filling you near to bursting. You're quick to harness it and turn it towards productive efforts, channeling it into Metal magic. Curious, this is the first time you've ever actually seen Metal magic channeled while meditating. It stretches from your reserves towards the distant portal, a deep purple in color. As the first tendril makes contact with one of the golden threads which ring the portal there's a flash of... something you can't quite describe. It's the most vibrant black you've ever seen, shot through with a thousand colors you don't have words for.

Then the portal starts to close, slowly but surely, as the thread creeps towards its opposite. You channel more magic, creating additional tendrils of vys to bridge the distance between you and the portal. Briefly you'll catch flashes of the battle raging on while you work. You'll spot a figure in armor made of water smashing the physical body of a void creature into a thousand glowing white pieces with a spear made from dreams, or see a beam of pure red rip through the battlefield, a hundred tiny fire spirits gathering around the light for warmth.

Several times you see a woman wearing the soul of a dead man as a mask rip the black core of a void creature from its chest cavity, the body dissolving into vys in a multitude of hues. You watch a woman wreathed in the hands of a thousand forgotten spirits cutting down swathes of alien monstrosities using a blade crafted from the divine itself. She hews through them as a scythe through wheat, destroying all in her path.

Finally you see a creature glowing white with the same vys as these foreign monstrosities. She impales them by the dozens upon spikes, lifting them into the air where they're trapped struggling uselessly against the spike run through them. She crushes still more of them within stone cages. She works alongside a creature of immense proportions, its soul a ball of churning fire comparable to the sun. He crushes, rips apart, and incinerates an untold number of invaders in the name of a man he barely knows.

Yet for all the effort, all the success, the battle still goes poorly. For every creature they kill two more appear, and with every passing moment the number of soldiers left to man the spearwall shrinks. You watch as the woman wreathed in water collapses in immense pain, her attackers pouncing upon her incapacitated form. You watch the woman wreathed in the same white as your foreign invaders take a blow from the hulking limb of a devourer, her chest shattering like a glorified eggshell. You witness the man with a spirit latched to his arm stabbed in the ribs by the grasping fingers of a matron and collapse into a pool of his own blood. They yet draw breath. With but the effort you could heal their wounds and ease their pain, but you must throw yourself fully into the completion of your task. Otherwise their efforts are all for naught.

With one final push you manage to reconnect the strings at the center of the portal, splitting it in half. Weakened you find repairing the rest of the damage is a much easier task, and when at last reality reasserts itself where once there had been only the ordered chaos of the void you're left only mildly drained.

You feel yourself sinking slowly into the warm embrace of unconsciousness, and for a moment you consider whether or not you ought to simply let yourself succumb. Your body is scorched, rendered a canvas of cooked flesh and swirling wounds by the efforts expended to close the portal. Have you not earned a nap?

No, you've much left to accomplish and to sleep here would mean to welcome death. It is through the expenditure of vys that you reach out to one of the men connecting their reserves of power to your own, informing them that the task is complete.

You find yourself shaken forcefully awake in short order. The screams of the dead and dying are the first indication that the battle yet rages, and you sit up as best you can despite a pounding headache and the stiffness in your joints. The man who woke you seems cautiously optimistic, waiting for some clue as to the results of your meditation. The others are slowly waking as well, all eyes turning towards you. In the distance you see the field of twisted land created by your sword, the vys still occluding any glimpse of the portal itself.

>Fuck these guys, your friends are in danger! Rush to find Profectus, his wounds seemed the most serious.
>Rushing blindly into battle will only get you killed. Rally your men and launch a counter offensive now that the momentum is yours.
>Extract bloody vengeance upon these alien invaders from atop Zahak's back.

I resolve after this, that we adopt an extermination policy towards the samrajya. Whatever the fuck they're called. They detonated a void bomb on us. That's as close as going nuclear in this setting gets. Those camelfuckers wanna play hardball? We need to just walk up into their capital, tear a huge chunk of string out of the fabric of reality there, drop the delerium filters, and book it.

You quickly heal several of the lesser injured water Vatis' and instruct them to stabilize your party starting with Profectus first. Mentally linking with Zahak you call for him and mount up. Enhancing your voice with vys to a booming thunder you proclaim "The void rift is sealed! Destroy the invader scum trapped in our world!!" You urge Zahak into the air and engage the enemy with your adopted son sending out a firestorm spearhead giving the ground troops an opening into the center of the enemy forces. You channel vys and create a rain of ice spears to further the opening.

The army roars and charges into the main body of the remaining void creatures. Sensing their only escape has been cut off, their leader dead, the minimal cohesion they had melts away into nothingness. They splinter and separate into retreat and most are just attempting to get away.

Focusing your attacks on the few groups of them still cohesive, you quickly eliminate the bulk of the opposition. Stragglers are picked off as they attempt to run. The day is won, for now.

Prof and the spirit in his arm+the rune.(we really should ask the cat about that)

>>
>>42990015
This little miniature Pa'vala will probably never fully heal. At the same time, it lacks a lot of the features that make the Pa'vala dangerous. Like giant sandworms and a tendency to spread unceasingly.

It is however a hotbed of unnatural magical phenomena. A great place to meditate, a very dangerous place to cast any sort of spell.

>>
>>42989954
The area isn't that big, and it won't spread itself like the Pa'vala. Bad, but it could be a lot worse.

We were going to lose a ton of people no matter what we did here. Whether we did the sword or not, these spirits were always going to cut down the peasants like a scythe through wheat.

By taking the sword route we bought ourselves enough time to regroup our army and form a plan of action. Pretty far from idle, but all in all this hasn't turned out catastrophically bad (so far).

With that and an entire rank up in Metal, I suppose this isn't a total wash, assuming none of our companions die. Kinda miffed about the sword since that was our big "fuck you" button vs shit that would normally completely outclass us. Though I think Hayes mentioned that aren't super rare, comparatively speaking, so there is that.

>>
You try to stand, but your balance falters. Fortunately the Vatis who woke you, a young man with a fresh scar carving across his right eye wearing the robes of a monk, catches you by the arm before you fall. You smile weakly, the effort sending pain shooting through the back of your skull, and pat him gratefully on the shoulder. Channeling vys you dull the pain and right yourself, the armor sending a flood of vitality through your limbs as vys begins to slowly seep out into the surroundings from where it was previously so tightly packed around the portal.

You turn to face the Vatis, bowing as low as you're able. “The portal is sealed, but my friends need me. I put you under the command of the Varistha-” You gesture to the man, currently occupied slapping himself to wake up. You get the sense that they really through all that they had into this, you're proud of them. A shame many of them will probably die to crush the last of the void incursion. “-and ask that you join the battle. Heal as many as you can and focus on supporting the spearmen.”

You leave them too it, setting off towards where you last recall seeing Profectus in a pool of his own blood. The area behind the spearwall is kept clear as a path for messengers, so you make rapid progress towards the vanguard at the very thick of the fighting. There the men are few and each one exhausted, but still they hold out desperately against what surely seems a never ending tide of enemies. You're shocked that they've managed to hold out for so long. You would've expected their morale to falter and their line to collapse long ago.

He had no obligation to include your long, drawn out plan that you "discussed" in the in the thread on Monday. If you wanted it, you should have written it in. Stop being a saltbitch and move on. This is frankly embarrassing.
>>
You channel vys as you approach the wall of exhausted men and tireless monsters. Wounds mend, exhaustion abates, and those thought dead rejoin the fight. The spearwall, held by no more than a single man in some places, finds itself replenished. With the stress somewhat lessened you push through, into the ranks of the enemy. Immediately the thick limb of a devourer swings towards you. Rather than try to dodge, you summon a pillar of stone from the ground to throw the creature off balance.

It falls quite spectacularly, shaking the earth very slightly as a result of its incredible bulk. Reaching into your cloak you withdraw your Hiacian Sabre and swing the blade down onto the creature's head. A pulse of vys ripping the creature very nearly in half. Rather dishearteningly its flesh simply begins knitting back together, but soon the spearmen swarm the creature and under the weight of their blows it begins to slowly disolve.

You draw out your shield, ducking beneath one blow and getting smashed across the back of the head by the next. Getting thrown forward actually ends up saving your life, because only moments later a wave of heat washes over you and the world is cast in dancing shades of red. Rolling onto your back you find that where once an eight foot tall monstrosity composed of exposed muscle tissue and bone stood, there's now a charred pair of legs rapidly being reduced to nothing at all.

You find Profectus huddled up underneath his shield, his sword held limply at his side. He's lost a lot of blood, leaving him even paler than usual, but he seems to have stymied the bleeding by cauterizing the hole in his side and packing it with mud. Not what you'd call sanitary, but it seems to have worked well enough.

He tries to smile, but ends up simply wincing. “I guess you managed to close the rift, then?” His voice is little more than a wheeze at this point. You wonder if one of his lungs was damaged?

Aww yeah. Time to build a victory shrine. We should cut off our arms and meditate to talk to an Emissary to see if we can get paid for this. We can totes reattach our arms after.
>>
You simply nod, rising to your feet. You check your surroundings carefully for any sign of those feminine creatures but you don't see them anywhere. They seem particularly dangerous, more so than most void dwellers. Healing Profectus is as simple as ripping the plug out of his side and channeling vys, but now you're faced with a choice. Darzi should be right around here somewhere, but you also have to worry about Fulvia.

You think Fulvia is probably somewhere near the forest of writhing void creatures impaled on metal spikes but that's just in front of the right flank, across a field full of enemy combatants out for your blood.

>Search for Darzi, she was in the midst of being mauled by those ghostly creatures which cause pain with a touch.
>Fulvia seemed like she was in greater danger. The blow from that devourer caved in the torso of her metal chassis. She could be getting smashed to pieces.
>Retreat behind the lines before you get swarmed, you're lucky most of them seem to be ignoring you in favor of the spearwall at the moment.

Reaching out through the brooches you touch upon the thoughts of each of your companions in turn. While it's comforting to know that they are all indeed still alive, Darzi seems to be unconscious. You can't get a good read on her. Fulvia on the other hand seems as clearheaded as always. {How is everyone doing? I've closed the portal with the help of the Vatis. If we can just mop up the last of these creatures the battle is won.}

Fulvia's response is quick and to the point. {I have sustained non-critical damage to my chassis. I am cut off from the bulk of the army with Zahak and will endeavor to rejoin them upon finishing repairs.}

Zahak butts in, his thoughts much more prominent in your mind than those of your other companions. {I got hit really hard in my wing but I'm okay. I'm keeping Fulvia safe! She has a bunch of weird hair hanging out of her stomach, she called them wires, but they just look like hair. Also she's made of metal! It's really strange. Also these entities taste really bad. Really, really bad.}

You sort of expected your son to be a little more freaked out by facing down a horde of twisted monsters distantly related to the gods themselves. You suppose dragons have a natural sort of tolerance for this sort of madness. Either that, or your son has no frame of reference for how strange this is. He is, after all, only a few months old. He might think this is normal.

Chryssa's voice is quick to cut in. {There's five of those giants with horns approaching her and Zahak's position. I'll provide support while they attempt to flee.}

You don't hear from Mortia, but you can tell that she's fine. Her thoughts practically radiate a sense of power and excitement. You'd even go as far as saying she's enjoying herself. {Mortia, how are things on your end?}

(!/2)
>>
Her thoughts interrupted, the emotions pouring off her seem to abate. {Huh? Oh! Uhh...} She trails off, but quickly resumes what she was saying. {Things seem okay on the left flank. We're holding firm. I think most of the spirits have been killed off but there are still a few pockets of resistance. I'm helping mop up.}

Profectus simply shrugs in your direction, and you return the gesture. Instead of wasting any more time you cast about with Nature sight, promptly picking up a gathering of vys which seems suspiciously similar to the heavy armor Darzi is wearing. The confluence of vys is off to the east, further away from the front lines than you were expecting, but you honestly can't imagine what else it would be.

Setting off at a brisk jog towards the signature with Profectus covering your back, you make good time. Profectus' blade seems surprisingly useful for lopping off these creature's gangly limbs and damaging cores, while your own saber proves less effective. You end up switching to the Trident instead, since at least it actually rotted away whatever material these creatures are made of.

As you approach the area where you sensed Darzi's armor you see her, being savagely beaten by one of those horned giants as well as four of those strange ghostly soldiers. Her armor is holding up well, but you imagine even Elaudian steel will crack eventually under the truly earth-shaking blows of the giant. For now you have the element of surprise.

Ice spears, though a magical attack, are delivered via physical means. It's only thing like trying to erode them, or rot them, or paralyze them, et cetera that don't really work. Fire magic also doesn't usually work on them.

Gee, alright, sorry.
But also you do realizes the best course of action would've been entering meditation again while supported by 21 vatis, healing our troops en masse and raining ice spear hell down on the void creatures, right? Hell, I'm convinced we could have found every single one of their cores with the 80+ bonus to Nature magic from the meditation, especially if we wore the crown.

Why would you think they still had vys left? Are you an idiot? Soma flat out said in the post that they were sending you all their vys, and that that's what you used to close the portal... they could all barely stand when you finished

Why would I think they still had vys? Well, maybe because we sent them off while telling them to go heal soldiers? They can't heal people without vys, while we can use vys much more efficiantly when it comes to healing, being a Water GM and all.
