You are Commander Sonali Vasusena, N7, Spectre and Poker Master. It’s been an eventful day, what with you being appointed Spectre and setting up your command. Now that you’re actually aboard your ship, you’re taking the time to get to know some of your crew over a game of Skyllian Five. The poor fools…
_
“Let’s get better acquainted with each other,” You say as you look over your hand. Four, Seven, Nine, Jack and Ace. “Where’d everyone serve? I was with the 103rd Marine Division before I was invited to the N-Program. After that, I served in one of the Special Forces Teams before I was given my own command.”

“Well,” Jaro says from behind her cards, “I was with a Mercenary outfit called Manticore a couple of years ago. Fought a lot in the Terminus. Done a lot of planetary assaults and some colony defending. Cath was there with me.”

Cath nods as she hands Ai an entirely new hand, “Yeah, I was in Manticore too and I’ve been pretty much everywhere Jaro’s been. Did a bunch of odd jobs before that and was with the 9th Frontier when I first enlisted. Just one tour though, then I left.”

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42982490

You drop the four and seven, taking the two cards that Cath hands you. Five and Nine. Well, you’re pretty sure that you’ve got this one, so you up your bet to 30, drawing glances from everyone else playing. Of course, you had a read on them the moment you looked at the game. Jaro is good at hiding her mood but the twitch of a tendon in her neck reveals her as annoyed and worried. Ai hides her reactions well, but she’s a tiny bit apprehensive. Johann might as well be an open book: he’s worried, but confident in his hand.

Meanwhile, Artesia begins talking, pride suffusing her voice, “The Alliance paid my University and Medical School fees so I enlisted as an Officer. I did rather well in the Academy so they assigned me to study under the Cairo’s staff before transferring me here. I have not actually seen any combat; the Cairo patrolled safer Council Space.”

Ai inspects her hand as she speaks, “I did stints on the Amsterdam and Munich for a few years while studying for Officer’s Certification. Got it last month and then they transferred me to this beauty.” She smiles. “Really looking forward to seeing what she can do.”

Welcome back Valor. Excited for today's game!

“I was stationed in the Hawking’s Trident Squadrons,” Johann says as he drops two of his cards and takes two more from Cath. “They saw I was that good right out of the Academy so they put me in a premier posting. Flown against pirates and mercs mostly but my squadron did a practice sortie against one of the Turian squadrons a few months ago.” He grins. “Absolutely thrashed them. Must have really impressed someone because they assigned me here.”

Leo speaks up from your right as he inspects the deck, “I served with the 7th Frontier for a few years before I was invited to the N-Program. Did well for myself there, made it to N7 status and then it’s all Classified stuff. I CAN say that I did a bunch of missions all on my lonesome before I was assigned to the Commander’s team.”

Perhaps ask about preferred operational limits. Kind of like what situations they would be very uncomfortable in, to the extent that it would effect their combat effectiveness...
Could also ask about what abilities they excel in and what they do best. Don't want to use a shock trooper to hack a door while the infiltrator fends off a heavy assault...

Basically just stuff to make sure that we can use our team at optimum efficiency.
Not expecting Loyalty mission quests to drop just yet though...

“So, what’s everyone good at?” You ask, shuffling your hand to bring your Nines next to your Ace. “And what’s everyone bad at? I’m a Combat and Tech Specialist first and foremost, but I can pull off a few Biotic tricks. And, supposedly, I’m a good Leader.”

“Fold,” Jaro says as she puts her hand down. “That’s a loaded question. Well, like I said before, I’m good in a straight up fight, and great for heavy combat. I’m okay with anything to do with Tech but don’t ask me hack.”

Cath chuckles, a femininely amused sound, “That’s an understatement. I can handle most advanced Tech jobs in the field and I’m great with Biotic support. Really, I’m decent in pretty much any position except command.”

“As Helmsman, I’m supposed to stay with the ship,” Johann answers as he meets your bet. “If I’m actually fighting, something has gone horribly wrong. But, if I have to, I am a good shot with a pistol and have some skill with Tech modules. Otherwise, my piloting is superb.”

Artesia answers next, her French accent slightly more pronounced, “I am trained with Field Medicine and have basic small arms training but my skills are best put to use in the Medical Bay. I am not averse to entering combat, but it would not be a wise decision.”

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42983601

“Kinda in the same boat as the Doc,” Ai answers as she meets the wager as well. “I’m a great Engineer, and I can manage the Core and engines in my sleep. But if I’m not, then we’re probably in deep shit. I’m honestly a terrible shot, but I usually use a shotgun or some Tech mods, so it shouldn’t be a big deal.”

“Again, I’m an N7,” Leo says from your right. “I’m best out in the field. Great with a rifle and Tech, but staying on the ship would be a waste.”

“Everyone done with their hand?” Cath asks and receives an affirmative from everyone still in. “Lay ‘em out.”

You play your hand, revealing the two nines next to the Ace, “Three of a kind.”

Both Ai and Johann sigh and play their hands as well. Two pair for Johann and Three fours for Ai. Your win.

You smile as you rake the chits to your pot, “So, where’s everyone from?”

Jaro waves her hand, “Come on, that’s a boring question. Howabout, where are you from and why are you here?”

“Demeter,” Johann answers as he returns his hand to Cath. “Grew up there. The whole planet is a giant farm and it’s boring as hell. I enlisted to get away from all that and I’m here to fly ships.”

Leo chuckles as Johann finishes, “Yeah, the farming life is pretty boring. I grew up on Earth, Kansas to be specific. ENlisted for pretty much the same reasons, but I’m here to kick some ass.”

“Earth for me too,” Cath says, shuffling the deck as she speaks. “Texas specifically. I enlisted . And I’m here because the Commander is paying me and the job actually looks pretty decent.”

“I’m with her,” Jaro adds in. “But I was born on Shanxi. Left cause I didn’t want to die in the shithole I grew up in.”

“Shanxi for me as well,” You say as you take your hand from Cath. “And I left for most of the same reasons. And obviously, I’m here because I’m a Spectre.” That draws a few smiles.

“I was born on the way to Benning,” Ai announces, looking over her cards and smiling. “According to my mother, I just couldn’t wait. I enlisted to get into space and I’m here to fix stuff and work with some of the most advanced tech in the Galaxy.”

“Earth.” Artesia responds before adding, “I was brought up in the Rhinelands. You’ve heard why I enlisted and I suppose I’m here because I want to help heal people. And because I was assigned to this ship.”

“Fairly multicultural crew we’ve got here,” Leo drawls. “Hope it’ll be nice working with you all.”

“Speaking of work, anyone have any ideas on how to make some good money while we’re out here?” You ask, looking over your hand. Two sixes, an eight, a ten and jack. “Turns out Spectres don’t get paid.”

“Wait, really?” Jaro exclaims, disbelief etched across her face. “You’re shitting me. What, is this some kind of community service?”

“That does sound pretty stupid,” Ai adds. “And a little illegal.”

“Apparently, the Council expects Spectres to be self-sufficient,” You say with a shrug. “But considering the fact that some Spectres end up pretty rich, it’s not TOO surprising. That’s why I wanted to ask if anyone knows how to make money quickly.”

“Salvage and Looting can be pretty lucrative,” Johann says, looking over his cards again. “Not to mention tagging asteroids and planets for minerals and such. I’ve looked over the ship’s scanner array and it’s sophisticated enough to do that.”

“Perhaps you should ask your colleagues,” Artesia suggests. “Most Spectres must be at least moderately successful at acquiring funds to stay active, yes?”

“You could also take some independent jobs,” Cath adds. “With a ship like this, you could take some advanced jobs and earn the big bucks.”

All are good points, but you’ll have to do some investigating if you want to figure out how make some real money.

You play for a little longer, chatting amiably with your crew. In the end, you end up 85 Credits richer and the others resolve to quit before they lose everything and resolve to get better acquainted with their stations. Johann and Jaro head up to the bridge while Cath and Ai head to the elevator and Artesia enters the Med-Bay. Picking up your earnings, you activate your Omni-tool which downloads the credits and breaks the chits down into gel to be absorbed First things first, you decide, you need funds.

Quickly, you send a message via the Spectre network to Garrus, asking him what the best ways to collect funds are, and how Shepard earned her money. Almost as an afterthought, you ask about the Reapers and what Shepard was talking about near the end there. Sending that message off, decide to log into the Ship’s Network. Immediately, several notifications pop up, informing you that the Ship’s roster has been filled and that your Navigator and Marine CO will be arriving tomorrow along with the rest of your crew. Another notice tells you that supplies have been loaded into the cargo bay and that several deliveries arrived and were placed in the cargo bay. In addition, several rifles in the Armory are slated to be shipped out. A moment later, another notice informs you that the rifles have been shipped out. Huh, Cath works fast.

Is Sirta a for-profit corp or is it a genuine foundation? I wonder how Council species fixed themselves up before medigel.

Also I wonder if Synthetic insights are actually involved in true AI research.

Or we could go the surveyor route. I imagine Council would prefer if we stayed on their side of Attican Traverse though. Mass relay network is relatively sparse so I imagine there's a lot of worlds worth exploring available.
>>
>>42996117
It's a corp that does some charity stuff.

And, as a Spectre, we're allowed to go pretty much anywhere.
>>
>>42996117
That map isn't valid.

It implies that the races live in the places between the mass relays, when in reality they're too far apart for anyone to actually travel from one relay to another. I mean, it implies that the geth have an incredibly huge amount of space- when in truth, they only have the teensy tiny areas around three relays.
>>
>>42996735
Yeah, it's a fan map that only shows clusters you can visit over the course of three games, and known connections between them. If your point was however that "geth space" or "citadel space" or whatever looks like it encompasses a monolith block of space that's controlled by the relevant faction then it's as misleading as anything that's shown in the actual games.

Obviously the actual controlled worlds for every faction are just a few colonies scattered along mass relay network, the way reapers/leviathans intended them to. Vast majority of actual star systems further away from activated relays remain unexplored.
>>
>>42996347

It's the open "road" for us, yes.
>>
>>42996735
It does depict 'claimed space,' though, despite being misleading as far as "where we actually have a firm hold."
>>
>>42996735
>>42997568

Well, this is the map from ME3's Multiplayer.

Note how much Territory the Alliance has Claimed.
>>
>>42997746
That's probably because humanity was opening relays with abandon until they encountered the council and cooled off a bit due to everyone else freaking out at potential dangers.
>>
>>42997783
This reminds me of a certain fanfic where the 'humanity' in Mass Effect was different.

Anyone know of other fanfics like that? Specifically ones about first contact?
>>
>>42997746
Indeed. The Systems Alliance has half again as many relays in half as much space as the Citadel races, even leaving out the (officially) unaffiliated colonies in the Traverse.
>>
>>42997816
>This reminds me of a certain fanfic where the 'humanity' in Mass Effect was different.
Where they didn't open the Relay and went something along creating their own dyson sphere? When a Turian patrol jump in they get hacked with "Welcome to earth mate, now fuck off we're full"?
Transcendent Humanity.
>>
>>42997816
>>42998050

There's a lot of those. I think one of the interesting ones was called Renegade Reimaginings where humanity had First Contact with the Batarians much earlier and ended up getting screwed over big time.
>>
>>42998192

Yeah, that one's good.

>Gentlemen, I have returned.
_

You decide that it’s about time to inspect your ship. Leo falls into step behind you as you make your way to the Commanding Officer’s cabin/office. Well, you were, up until you saw something particularly interesting. There are three doors at the back of the Common’s area, leading into the space that would normally be occupied by the crew’s sleeper pods on a Normandy-Class ship. The center one opens as you approach, revealing a small cabin and several bunks and desks. Looking into the other two rooms reveals similar layouts, albeit in different arrangements. You’re impressed, this is actually significantly more efficient than the original design and a better use of the space.

Upon exiting the crew cabins you make your way over to the your own quarters. Inside, you find a comfortable bed and a desk with an integrated computer console. The entire room is pretty much a carbon copy of the CO’s cabin on the Trenton, down to the bluish-white lighting and the brushed steel walls. A quick peek under the desk shows that, no, there is not a patch of the wall that has been worn smooth by constant rubbing. If there was, you’d be vaguely disturbed.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42999893

Leaving your quarters, you spy Leo messing about in the small galley situated in the corner of the Mess. He appears to be inspecting the food dispenser and looking at something in his hand. As you approach, he looks up and wordlessly passes you what he’s holding, a sticky note.

It reads, “To the new CO, we replaced the Standard Synthesizer with one that we designed ourselves. It can create and dispense a much wider selection of foods using Food Pattern Files but we weren’t able to load any custom plans before the ship was sent out. You’ll have to acquire any Files for meals you want yourself but it’s still a cut above what you would get normally. Regards, the Julius Research Team.”

Huh, that’s awfully thoughtful of them. Leo doesn’t look particularly enthused though.

“It’s not going to synthesize normal food until we find some files for it. That means nutrient paste and ration bars.”

You can deal with ration bars, but nutrient paste is absolutely disgusting. Getting a selection of food files is probably a good idea if you don’t want to crew to mutiny.

Leo opens up his Omni-tool and begins browsing the web, “I’ll find some files we can use before we end up leaving port. You go do CO stuff.” And he waves you off.

Leaving him to his search, you check out the Medical Bay. Pretty much identical to the one on the Trenton, except for the Doctor in charge. Artesia is a far cry from Doctor Singh. For one, she’s much prettier, in that aristocratic European way. The young woman looks up from her console as you enter the bay, still clad in the full Medic BDU.

“Ah, Commander, can I help you with anything?”

I thought it was 50000 units, not tons.

Also, what's up with that uniform? It's absurdly tight.
>>

some people are obsessed with bellybuttons, man. Or just don't understand clothes, somehow.
>>
“Not particularly,” you answer as you look at the blonde Doctor. “Just having a look around. But while I’m here I might as well ask what the Med-Bay’s status is.”

“Well,” she says as she pulls up some files on her console. “It would appear we’re fully stocked on standard Medi-Gel, Pseudo-Morphine, Regen-X and most other necessary medications, as expected. The current surgery suite is… adequate, I suppose.”

You raise an eyebrow, “Adequate?”

Artesia frowns, and swivels her chair to gesture to the machinery set up over the beds. “We have the standard suite that Aldrin Labs provides and it will handle our medical needs just fine. However, I trained on Sirta’s Asclepius System and that one has a much more sophisticated VI and many additional features that I would find enormously useful when conducting surgery. Of course, I’m very experienced with the current suite and there should be no issues there. Besides, the Asclepius is prohibitively expensive and it would be silly to assume that the Alliance would provide one.”

>[CONT.]
>>
>>43001163

You nod in understanding, “I’ll keep it in mind.”

The young Frenchwoman blinks before frantically waving her hands and shaking her head, “Oh no, Commander, please don’t. The Asclepius can go upward of a million credits. It’s not something we can acquire easily.”

“Well,” You shrug, “You never know what might happen while we’re on the job. Is there anything else you might need?”

“Oh, yes,” She says as she pulls up what appears to be medical charts. “Could you explain why your Medical File is classified?”

Probably because of all this modding I've gone through. Or maybe they tightened access to my files because of my new job as a spectre, in case someone wanted to use them against me?

How illegal are gene mods in citadel space anyway?
>>
>>43001329
Medical needs access to most of that data to provide medical treatment and diagnosis. I'm honestly surprised she's still locked out.

That’s strange, normally your Doctors have access to those files, even though they’re classified. Although, now that you’re a Spectre, your files might be under higher security. It shouldn’t be a difficult fix. But first...

“That’s classified.” You say with a straight face.

Immediately, Artesia’s eyes narrow into a glare and she takes a breath, likely to berate you with. At that moment, you grin cheekily and instead she lets the breath out in a huff but continues to glare at you.

“Seriously though, I’m full of Biotech Augmentations. Let me see if I can get you access.”

The pouting Medic rolls her chair away from the console and you approach it. Yes, it looks like a higher classification but your authorization clears that up in short order.

“Here you go,” You say, stepping back. “If you’ve got proper scanning equipment it might be easier to show you than tell.”

Artesia shakes her head, “That’s fine, I’m perfectly capable of reading the file.”

“Suit yourself, was that everything?”

>[CONT.]
>>
>>43002730
“Oh, actually, could you have the two mercenaries you hired come by for a physical? I don’t have files on them and if I’m going to be treating them in the future it’s best to establish a model of normality.” She pulls up another file and you can see Leo’s picture on it. “In addition, Lieutenant Delamere is due for a physical.”

“I’ll have them drop by,” You answer. “That it?”

“I believe so.”

“Alright then,” And then a thought strikes you. “Before I go, can I ask why you’re wearing your armor?”

Artesia blinks, looking puzzled, before straightening in realization, “Oh! This.” Then she looks vaguely embarrassed. “I was actually issued a new set for this posting and I’m attempting to get used to it.”

“Ah, make sense,” You agree. “New armor always take a little while to get used to. Anyways, nice chatting with you Doctor.”

“Good-bye Commander.”

You exit the Med-Bay.

>>
>>43003330
That seems needlessly complicated

>>43003242
A slight Irish accent can be pretty sexy if done right.
>>
Leo is still fiddling with the Food Dispenser, so you inform him on your way to the elevators that the Doctor needs to see him for a checkup. He sighs and reluctantly abandons his quest. Hopefully he’ll have made some progress before you leave port.

The elevator ride to the Cargo Bay is rather fast, you note. Another improvement over the original Normandy class. Stepping out, you see a Mako parked on the far side of the bay surrounded by crates and the Armory, with its lockers and workbenches, is still on the left side of the room. Cath appears to be inspecting the various crates and marking their contents down on her Omni-Tool. She looks up as you approach her and appears vaguely bemused when you tell her to get a physical with the Doctor but heads off to do so anyways. You take a look around the bay and the Armory, noting that all your gear has been properly stored and nothing was damaged.

As soon as you’re done with that, you head off to Engineering. The Tantalus Core hums low and you can feel the energy it gives off quite acutely. The rest of engineering, the parts with the computers and such looks pretty much the same as the one on the Trenton. Ai waves from her console as you enter, and you approach her.

“Hey Commander, what brings you down here?” She asks. Chipper seems to be her default mood.

"Just checking everything out, how's she running?" You ask.

“Like a dream,” Ai proclaims proudly. “On the way here the core and engines were running at peak efficiency. The core generates more than enough power to run everything, and we didn’t even need to dump our emissions on the way here. We still did, of course, but we could have gone for a few more trips without having to if we wanted.”

You smile, pleased that your ship performs so well, “Excellent. Have you heard about the Omni-Forge we brought on board?”

Ai’s widen considerably, “Really? We have one?”

“Well, a broken one,” you admit. “But Cath tells me that she can fix it up with the proper materials.”

“Hell, I’ll help her!” the Engineer shouts. “Working with one of those babies would be awesome!”

“I’ll let her know,” You say with a smile.

“I appreciate that. Was that everything?”

"Pretty much.” You reply. “Although, do you need anything? Equipment, tools, stuff like that? Can't promise to get it soon, but I'll try to get it sometime."

Ai shakes her head. “Nah, I’m pretty well stocked on everything I need. Just waiting for the rest of the Engies to show up so I can show them the ropes.”

“Alright then,” You say. “Oh, one last thing, you may see me floating in here from time to time, so don't freak out.”

Her brow furrows in confusion, “Floating?”

“I’m a Biotic and I meditate near the core sometimes,” You explain. “Reaction between the core’s field and the eezo in my body allows me to float on my own.”

“Ahhh, I gotcha,” Ai says with understanding. “Yeah, makes sense to me. I won’t bug you then.”

“Thank You.”

“Well, I’ll see you around Commander,” the young Asian woman turns back to her console.

“See you around,” You say as you leave.
_

You quickly grab a ration bar from the galley on your way to the bridge and chow down, noting Leo’s absence and assuming he’s still with the Doctor. Ascending the stairs to the CIC, you hear the sounds of conversation and laughter. At the front of the ship, Johann reclines in his pilot’s chair, laughing uproariously while Jaro leans forward on the edge of the gunner’s chair behind him, a wide grin plastered across her face. Approaching them, you note the familiarity of the consoles that line the walkway and take some comfort in that.

“... and that’s why we stopped recruiting Vorcha,” Jaro seems to conclude her story.

Johann gasps his response out after catching his breath, “I can see why! I didn’t actually think they were that dumb.”

Jaro crosses her arms as she leans back, “Still vicious in a fight though. Blood Pack uses them for disposable shock troopers.”

“Emphasis on the disposable, huh?” The pilot chuckles.

“Yep,” the Mercenary agrees.

It’s at that moment the two of them notice you approaching the bridge, and turn their chairs to greet you.

“Commander.” “Ma’am.”

“Just getting the run of the ship, making sure the crew is settling in nicely,” You answer as you take a seat in the other chair. “How do things look from your end?”

Jaro gestures to the weapon controls, “Well, I’ve got a basic handle of the main cannon and the missile pods. That cannon was a bit tricky, triple cycling shot isn’t something I’m used to but I think I can deal with it. Those missile pods are simple shit though.”

“Excellent,” You say before turning to look at Johann expectantly.

He gives you a rundown of his experience so far. “The Nakshatra” you note that he doesn’t stumble over the name “handled beautifully on the way here. Almost as good as some of the Tridents I’ve flown. It’s thanks that engine design they swapped in, it’s a cut above anything else the Alliance has. The controls are straightforward and simple too. I really cannot complain.”

“That’s great to hear,” You say with a smile. “Oh, I also need to inform you Jaro, that the Doc-” You’re cut off by a piercing wail emitted from your Omni-Tool.

All three of you stare at the offending device for a moment before you open it up. The emblem of the Spectre Office appears briefly before being replaced by a video feed of a familiar Asari: Tela Vasir. The feed is initially shaky, but it stabilizes after a moment, showing the other Spectre crouched with her back pressed up against a durasteel wall and a shotgun cradled in her arms. There’s a scratch on her forehead that oozes purplish blood across her face, and she’s breathing heavily.

Then, she begins to speak, urgency causing her voice to rise, “This is Spectre Tela Vasir, to any and all C-Sec and Spectre forces in the immediate area. I am under attack by unknown enemy forces inside the 133 Block of Zakera Ward and requesting urgent assistance” there’s a sound of gunfire and a muted explosion in the distance “I’m not sure how much longer I can hold out, please, Hurry.” The feed cuts out.
