Recap of the last thread:

You were handed a military issue flamethrower.
>>
>>42962479
“And if you push that button- ah, you've already pushed it.”

The pilot light flicks on like a blue will o' wisp.

“Are you okay exterminator? Something seems to be on your mind.”

“I'm, uh, I'm fine. Just, uh, thinking.”

Maxim tilts his head, his expression inscrutable beneath the opaqued surfaces of his helmet. You hope your tingling anticipation isn't as obvious as it feels.

“If you are scared, we can practice on this floor before going up. It is still untouched here.”

>Practice with your flamethrower, exterminate this floor
>Practice with your flamethrower, burn the roots on the 3rd floor
>Practice? We're going to the fourth floor, not Carnegie Hall.
>The flame is its own guide and the only friend I need (turn flamethrower on Maxim and solo the building)

>practice time

Maxim lets you take point this time, instructing you on the proper use of the weapon as you proceed methodically through each room. The flame is cone of hot blue death, melting old steel bed frames like butter. The cats don't fair well either.

As you're clearing a room of a muta-rat nest, Maxim directs you to turn the dial up. The cone of flame thins to a tight beam.

“Now, point it at the wall and make a circle.”

You do as he says and the flame easily penetrates the wall. When you're done, Maxim gives the center of the circle a kick and it gives way, crushing a second nest on the other side.

“Impressive” you tell him.

“Yes, I am an excellent kicker. But you see how versatile the weapon is? You should try pressing the other button- No! Not now! It activates the anti-personnel setting.”

>Anti-personnel? This seems pretty anti-personnel already...
>Well, I'll keep that in mind. I think I'm ready to go somewhere else.. (3rd floor, 2nd floor, or Basement)

>anti-personnel?

“What do you mean by anti-personnel? What’s the difference from this setting?”

“Current setting is multi-purpose, for carving men and ships alike. It burns hot but only covers about 5 meters at the longest and tightest range. Anti-personnel releases old fashioned fuel that covers up to 50 meters at maximum settings. Very useful in close corridors but it does not cauterize like the normal setting, so do not use it here except as absolute last resort.”

Got it.

“I'll keep that in mind. I think I'm ready to go somewhere else..”

So cauterizing prevents the fire from spreading by burning so hot things turn to ash instantly and can't burn independently?
>>

Well I wouldn't think they'd be celebrating anyway.

"Up to 4th floor maybe?"

"Yeah, I think it's time."

Maxim again lets you take point, hefting his huge machine gun with ease. He hasn't fired it yet and you're a bit fearful of what kind of destruction it will unleash when he does.

You're surprised to find the stairwell to the 4th floor cluttered with broken furniture and other obstructions.

"Burn it away." says Maxim, as if you needed suggestion...

Once everything has burned to ash the two of you proceed together onto the fourth floor. The ground here is spongy, replaced entirely by the same knotted black material that composed the roots below. Tiny red buds protrude from it here and there but they're barely visible in the darkness of this floor...

"I thought there would be a lot of them up here" whispers Maxim.

"Me too..."

You do your best to focus and close your eyes for an instant, trying to enhance your hearing. Instead you become aware that the floor is beating and pulsating beneath your feet.

This place is unclean. But you do hear something, a small scrabbling in the open elevator shaft beside you.

You approach with caution and your headlamps on. As you stand on the precipice of the shaft, a hideous head flips down and emulates something like a scream. You reflexively annihlate it with your flames and a headless body tumbles down into the pit.

Behind you, you hear a crash and then a deafening wave of percussion as Maxim opens up.

Looking down the hallway, sprouters are bursting from the apartments, waving makeshift weapons of every sort.

You level the flamethrower at them, tweaking the settings to a nice medium.

>Hold your ground

You stay right where you are, anticipating the instant in which you will pull the trigger for maximum effect.

The sprouters screech with anticipation as well, something which you calmly note that they seem to do by pushing air out through their ribs. They must have a very strange way of breathing.

You pull the trigger and the first wave of sprouters is neatly enveloped by purifying blue flames. The little red buds on the walls and ceiling burst in the heat and leak blood sap. Something screams terribly and without end.

Maxim is holding his ground as well, though his front seems less certain than yours. The sprouters seem able to shrug off most wounds that don't strike the nervous system directly but they can't really proceed without their limbs either you suppose.

After what seems like an unending torrent of enemies, the remaining sprouters reluctantly back off, slinking into the floors shadows. Looks like you're fighting a guerilla war now..

"Let's move back into the stairwell for a minute, I want to try something."

"What?!"

You repeat yourself, louder this time. It's difficult to be heard over all the screaming. He gets the general idea and you both move out into the stairwell again.

Taking one of the taser grids out of your bag, you fire it directly into the floor. It immediately goes into convulsions, twisting and turning on itself spasmodically. The screaming intensifies to a higher pitch.

"Really does sound like a woman!" Maxim shouts. You nod your agreement.

Looking up the stairs towards the fifth floor, you see that it is almost entirely overgrown with the black growth.

You fire a second taser grid into the ground.

>Taser grids remaining: 17

It seems to cause the screamer even more pain but it doesn't stop the noise. This doesn't seem to be having the effect you want... but maybe that's because the taser grids are designed as non-lethal weapons.

>toss gas grenade

Fuck it, you think. Time to move.

You pull the pin on one of your tranquilizer grenades and hurl it down the hallway. There's no visible gas that emits from the grenade but you hear it hissing angrily as it disappears into the darkness.

The screaming lowers by several decible levels and you signal to Maxim that it's time to move. You're ambushed at the end of the hallway again by sprouters, who seem as nimble as ever. But, as one charges out ahead of the rest, they do seem less coordinated.

You now stand at an intersection.

The screaming begins again, though you find yourself uncertain that it had ever really stopped.

Pounding footsteps announce another wave of Sprouters and Maxim answers them with Baba Yaga, though he cannot protect both of his flanks. You need to reach his side but are mired in the sap...

The screaming died down again at some point during that last fight but your ears are still ringing. You'd rub your temples to try and release some of the pain bouncing around in your skull right now but there's nothing you can really do through the hazmat suit...

You carefully segregate your feelings and your senses, trying to find where the Sprouter's might have fled to. You hear them breathing wetly in a room further down the hallway and advance.

Your hunch proves correct but you're surprised when one of the sprouters makes the first move, leaping from the relative safety of the room to try and confront you on all fours. It's a piece of cake to down it with the taser grid but you wonder why it charged at you so readily when it could have stayed hidden...

You pull the pin on your second tranquilizer grenade and toss it neatly into the room. Something tosses it back.

In response, you drop your flamethrower to your side, letting it hang from its shoulder strap, and ready your taser grid. Whatever is in there, you're taking it alive.

You enter into the room and find yourself immediately confronted with an abnormally large specimen of sprouter, similar to the others in every aspect except its towering size.

It swings a long piece of steel rebar at you and you're forced to hit the deck. Maxim unleashes Baba Yaga over your prone form and demolishes the Sprouter's blackened skull before helping you to your feet.

"Idiot! I was going to take that one alive!"

"You already have one. Besides, look."

He points past the now collapsed corpse of the giant Sprouter at a sprawling junction of the fungal roots between the floor and the ceiling. There, inextricably bound into the fleshy mass, is a woman. Her face is wet with tears and her arms and legs have been consumed by the growth entirely it seems...

"No-!"

The fire washes over her face, burning it off instantly. Then the skull blackens and turns to ash. It's quick at least.

Maxim curses under his breath in Russian as you go about severing the rest of the fungal structure she was connected to.

"I thought you said you wanted her alive, exterminator."

"I did but not like that."

That seems to be all either of you is willing to say about the issue and the awkward silence is soon terminated by the slinking arrival of more of the Sprouters.

They seem disjointed now, and arrive one by one. Easy pickings for you and Maxim as you clear out the rest of this floor.

Feeling confident that this floor has been cleared, you explain to Maxim your intention to see what was at the bottom of the stairs on the ground floor. He's once again perplexed as to why you wouldn't want to continue on up but complies none the less.

At the bottom of the stairs you are confronted by a steel security door. It's locked but you circumvent the problem entirely by simply burning through the lock and hinges.

A gentle push sends the door clattering down some metal stairs and splashing into what looks like knee deep water.

"Flooding. You should really call your landlord, Maxim."

You wait patiently before stepping onto the metal staircase and sweeping the basement with your lamp. Maxim stays behind without comment and refuses to follow when you ask. Claims it would be better for one of you to stay and make sure nothing attacks from above.

It doesn't take long to find your kill; a massive sewer lizard, not unlike the one you saw in the "toy factory" lays still in the middle of the water.

"Good find."

"It is. Maybe you would have found something too if you had come down there with me. Afraid of a little water?"

"Ehh, I prefer vodka."

"Come on, really? You really couldn't come down with me? What bothers you so much about it?"

He doesn't answer, he just stares at you from behind his helmet. Apparently he doesn't want to talk about it.

The two of you make your way back to the mass obstructing the fifth floor and burn through it, releasing another torrent of sap that momentarily bogs both of you down.

Moving past it, you find yourself once again on a spongy mat of fungal growth though it seems a little less bouncy now. Almost like it's stiffening...

Rolling for flammenwerfer or trank gun
>>
>>42966680

You once again grip both handles of your true love.

This floor is suspiciously quiet but you are not ambushed as you investigate from room to room. Instead you find sacs of blood sap, much like the ones you saw below except for the fact that these contain the suspended forms of what appear to be half-developed sprouters.

"Strange." you remark, more to yourself than Maxim. This isn't in line with anything you knew previously about sprouters.

"You never know what to expect from these freaks" says Maxim.

Yep, mother fungus. A hive.

So they didn't actually capture homeless people or corrupt them.

That's why those things just attacked instead of trying to infect.

You search through the disorganized jumble of pods and notice that they're connected to the ceiling as well. Could there really be another layer of this?

Maxim tests to see if any of the cocooned sprouters are alive but cutting one of them open. Red sap gushes out and the sprouter hits the ground face first. You're going to treat that as a no. Still...

*plop plop plop*

You follow the noise and find the tiniest of these sprouters you've seen so far weakly crawling on all fours. It's only the size of a child and goes down after two quick shots from your tranquilizer gun.

>4 darts remain, and you reload

Hopefully it'll survive long enough to make it back to GEC... or to Zheng.

You drag the juvie spec to the stairwell and leave it there. This floor seems to be abandoned otherwise so you figure that's safe enough...

The seventh floor is covered with a lumpy white layer of fungus, covered in small hairs. Gaping holes in the ceiling let the last of the day's light shine through...

Unexpectedly, Maxim opens fire behind you, downing a rather spindly looking sprouter. Seems there are still a few inhabitants up here...

>definite pass

You cover the floor rapidly and manage to trank one more loose sprouter, which Maxim helps you bring down to your van along with the diminutive on the sixth floor. This is quite the haul you're bringing in here...

On the way down you find that your cages have filled up with the locusts on the third floor, although many more remain loose throughout. You load them into the van as well.

You're just thinking about going back in with your sprayer to take out the rest when two VTOLs pass overhead and land on the roof.

...Maybe it's best to leave now, you think.

Maxim has seen the VTOLs too and is talking rapidly to himself in Russian. You soon realize he probably has a comm in the helmet and is speaking to Ilya, who quickly arrives outside the building in her own set of armor and with a small sack of personal belongings.

Then Maxim asks if they can come with you.

>Sure, they obviously have to get out of here. (squeeze them into your van)
>No, it's too dangerous. They have to find their own way.
>>
>>42967455
VTOL?

Russianbros pretty cool. Also, we get sweet Russian knowledge and equipment assuming they stay

Drop them off somewhere and go to HQ. Ask them to unload their weapons though.

Vertical take off and landing aircraft. sometimes called VTOLs for people who are chronically non-specific about what kind of aircraft they're talking about.

Stay where?

In the apartment?

Odds are they just want a getaway vehicle to somewhere, not entrusting themselves to a GEC employee's home.
>>
Guess using the second taser grid and making the [screaming intensifies] wasn't a good idea if it made the neighbors call the Scyths.

Yup, that and the sustained gunfire gave you away to somebody.
>>
Now we just have to signal Zheng and unload a few.

We did grab the sprouter that was taser'd in the fourth floor, right.
>>
>>42967601
The sprouter is humanoid right? Then we should bring it to GEC to get them off our asses.
>>
>>42967630
There's more than ONE.
>>
>>42967592
can we ask for more mone for specs based on the info that they are worth potentially hundreds of thousands? that was said a couple threads ago correct?
>>
>>42967601

You grabbed all of your specs successfully, anon.

>>42967664

Insurance value is different from actual value and would be much higher to represent costs sunken into maintaining and capturing the specimen in the first place. You could get more money for certain specimens but not hundreds of thousands.

>>42967592

You cram them into your van alongside your numerous captured specimens. Ilya doesn't look too happy to be crammed in alongside the sprouters, the bugs, and the woman who smells like cat poop but she doesn't have much choice.

You pull out in manual and ask the two of them where they want to go.

They give you an address but they sound uneasy. You doubt Ilya was able to take everything they owned in that little sack...

No matter what you decide, you should offload them before you head back to GEC.

Have you.

Have you met Devlinson.

Devlinson mentioned the specimens were insured for quite a lot of money, which is why he was happy when they were stolen (he got a chunk of the payout for himself).

>take them where you were told to, try and get a little info

You drive to the address they gave you, which turns out to be a Russian restaurant on the other side of town.

You ask Maxim for some way to get back and touch and he gives you nothing more than an e-mail address on a shred of paper.

"We will be moving around a great deal. I try and check the inbox once a month from a public location."

And like that, they're gone.

>End thread

Well, we got through the apartment building in one piece. I'd love to keep going but I really can't.

I'm going to take one last vote here that will determine how the next thread starts.

So four sprouters in all. First the tranked tar man from last thread on the third floor.

You got them all, like I said, and you can divy them up between how many you want to drop with GEC and how many with Zheng.

So much shorter than usual.

Incidentally, retconning this thread so I remember to have Vince give the flamethrower back.
