>This Quest takes place in the world of Yu Yu Hakusho, where you play as a young man who will become Koenma's new Spirit Detective

>Decisions will be made by vote; at the end of each update I give, options will be provided. Typically, you should only vote on one, but in some circumstances multiple options will be taken in a vote.

>There will be ten minutes to vote after each update; whichever option has the most votes will win

>Writeins will typically be allowed, though only when they are given as options at the end of a post

>This is not DBZ, so death will almost certainly be permanent

>This is not Game of Thrones, so main characters will probably not be dying left and right. So, be careful with your choices, but also relax and have fun

The rest of gym class goes off without any further incident. You hang out with Randy, talking about all kinds of simple things until it comes time for the next class. You depart from the gym and walk to your history class, where you see Erin among the assembled students.

A brown-haired woman with a ponytail sits behind a desk, watching the students as they come and greeting them politely.

You say a friendly hello as you look for a seat. There is one beside Erin, one beside a red-haired boy in glasses, and one in the back next to some blonde girl on her cell phone.

Since Erin's the only person you recognize, you take a seat beside her. The two of you exchange quick hellos before the class begins.

"Good morning, students," your teacher greets. "I am Ms. Claire, and welcome to your United States History course."

She turns on her smart board and pulls up a PowerPoint presentation titled "The Causes of the American Revolution"

"Now, can anybody tell me some of the factors that caused the colonies to rebel against England?" Ms. Claire asks.

>>
>>42958778
You raise your hand, and when called upon, mention the stamp act and a series of other perceived injustices, resentment towards Europe in general, a desire for representation in Parliament which England refused to give, and catalyzing events such as the Boston Massacre.

"Very good," Ms. Claire says with a smile. "You're absolutely correct. After the conflict that became known in North America as the French and Indian War..."

Your teacher goes on to explain how, beginning with the French and Indian War, Britain began to get more directly involved in the colonies it had largely left to their own devices in the past. This interference, combined with increased taxes despite a lack of representation, caused tensions to run high.

You pay attention and take notes, and by the time class is over, you feel satisfied that you understand the material.

Class is dismissed, and you head to lunch, finding the cafeteria already crowded. You buy some lunch which, to your surprise, actually appears edible, then look around for a place to sit.

You spot the strange darkhaired boy from yesterday sitting by himself, Robert sitting with a bunch of other large looking students, Randy sitting with a group of students consisting of two other guys and a pair of girls, and the blonde girl from your history class sitting with a group of other girls, acting very obnoxious.

You walk over to the table, where the strange boy seems to be staring into a hand mirror.

He quickly shuts it, shifting nervously as you take a seat. He doesn't appear to have any lunch, and looks extremely uncomfortable. He doesn't look directly at you, simply staring out of the corner of his eyes as sweat seems to appear on his face.

"Oh, uh....hello Siegfried...." he greets in a shaky voice before suddenly tensing up, as if he said something he shouldn't.

You consider asking how he knows your name, but he probably just heard the teacher in homeroom say it. Still, this boy is just strange, and you feel yourself growing a bit uncomfortable as you sit across from him. You wonder if he's like this with everyone, or if it's just something about you that makes him nervous.

"So, what was up with that bug thing yesterday?" you ask. "You seemed really worried about it."

Jim's face pales noticeably, and he nearly chokes on his hotdog. He shifts around uncomfortably as he tries to develop an answer. You're pretty sure that he's about to give you a lie as an explanation, but you decide to hear him out anyway.

"Well...you see...I thought I saw a tick flying around in the pet store," he explains, stuttering a bit. "I thought it would bite someone, or the dogs, so I came in to warn everyone."

He gives another weak smile. "But, you killed it."

"Well, why did you sound so surprised I saw it?" you ask him.

You see that Jim is sweating. "I didn't think anybody would see it, I just thought it would bite someone without anyone knowing it was there."

"How did you-" Jim starts before catching himself. He gives a nervous little laugh. "There's no such things as ghosts, so don't worry about that."

He looks you in the eyes, for once saying something you actually believe. "Look, it's for your own good that I'm not telling you. I didn't expect anyone to see what you saw, but I can't have you getting involved with this. Now please, don't ask me any more questions."

"The professionals?" you ask. "Please don't tell me that's just you."

"No, it's not just me," he tells you nervously. "Now please, stop worrying about it."

He looks down at the watch on his wrist, glancing nervously over his shoulder. You follow his gaze, and see Rob starring at you hatefully.

You half expect him to get up and try fighting you in the middle of the cafeteria, but you also see that he's being watched by several faculty members. Despite the fact that Rob really can't do anything right now without getting into serious trouble, Jim doesn't seem relaxed in the slightest.

"You don't sound all that certain that things will be okay, man," you tell him.

He looks back at you, forcing another smile. "I promise, things are fine."

The bell rings, and Jim quickly gets up, rushing to his next class. You get up and head to your next class; English.

You duck under his strike, and throw a punch of your own, hitting him right between the legs. Rob lets out a pathetic little squeak before falling to his knees in front of you as you rise back up.

"Dude, you punch like a bitch," you comment. "Are we done? Or do I need to move on to teaching you about humility next?"

Rob's buddies look at him in surprise, before one comes rushing at you. He kicks, aiming between your legs, but you shift, resulting in a kick to the shin rather than a kick to the nuts.

Still, the kick hurts, and the punch that follows doesn't help things very much.

You throw a punch at the kid, catching him in the face and knocking him right off his feet. The poor guy goes sprawling on the sidewalk, and you're pretty sure he hit his head.

You look over at Rob, who's back on his feet. He's pretty much shaking with anger at this point, and yells loudly as he rushes towards you.

He doesn't try to punch, kick, headbutt, or even tackle you. Instead, he reaches out and tries to wrap his hands around your throat. Instinctively, you seize his wrists, and try pushing his arms away, only for him to throw his head forward and slam it into yours.

You take a step back, grabbing your head and watching as Rob does not do the same. Instead he rushes forward, throwing a punch that seems to have a little more juice behind it than the last few did.

In fact, it actually hurt.

Rob's remaining friend goes to the one you just beat down, checking to see if he's okay. Rob throws another punch at you, and you duck, stepping back and deciding what to do here.

"He's okay, right?" you ask, pointing to the other kid on the ground.

"Of course he is!" the guy tells you. "Now get out of here!"

"Tell Robby if he wants to fight some more, he can find me after school tomorrow," you tell the kid. "Peace out."

You leave the guy to take care of his friends, then make your way towards the tree. You see Jim peak from behind it, swearing under his breath and taking off when he sees you coming.

You decide to pursue Jim, and let your parents pick up Madelyn.

You rush after your classmate, tearing down the block as he sprints away from you, moving with surprising speed, but not nearly fast enough to outrun you.

"Jim! You can run away now, but we got to the same school, you dingus!" you call as you gain ground on the other student.

He stops in his tracks, sighing and turning towards you. He pulls out the hand mirror from earlier, opens it, looks into it for a moment, then closes it.

"Hey, Siegfried," he says, smiling weakly and trying to keep his voice even. "How are you doing?"

"I wouldn't have chased you if you hadn't run," you tell him. "Why did you run, anyway?"

"Well, uh...I saw you beat up those kids, and thought you were coming to beat me up too," Jim answers. Because of the fear in his voice, you honestly can't tell if he's being honest or not.

"Well, sorry to chase after you like that," you say. "I'd just like to ask you not to tell on me. It's a little hard to justify self-defense when you win in a three on one fight."

Jim gives a nervous chuckle. "Right. No problem, man, I won't tell on you."

"So, what are you doing out here?" you ask.

"Oh, just...walking home from school," he tells you.

"And why did you look in that mirror before I caught up with you?" you ask.

"Oh...uh..just a habit of mine," Jim tells you.

You know. Totally forgot we had a phone.

After we ask for the mirror, pop it out and take a selfie with Jim and get his number.

That way she he does relent, we have each other's number.

And the fact we got a phone totally tells him we did not in fact need the mirror.

You pull out your cell phone. "Speaking of which, I should call them and let them know I'll be home a little late."

Your mother frowns. "Well, you don't look hurt very badly, so I'm guessing you won. I just hope you did it outside of school, and that you taught the other guy not to pick a fight with you again."

You get into the car, and your dad starts driving in the direction of the elementary school.

"Sort of," you answer. "I think he has a few screws loose."

"Why's that?" your dad asks.

You tell your parents about the strange encounters you had with Jim, from the pet store, to lunch, to just now.

"I think he's hiding things," you tell them. "And he seems to have an obsession with this small mirror he carries with him."

Your parents look at one another, and you can see your mom's jaw clench.

"I'm sure you're just imagining things," your dad tells you.

"Plenty of people have strange habits," your mom agrees. "Bruce, do you remember where I put-"

"It's in your drawer," your dad tells her. "Are you sure you want to-"

"Yes, I want to find out what's going on," your mom tells him.

You aren't sure what they're talking about, and you sense that you wont get much information if you try to ask them now.

Your dad nods. "Alright then, go ahead and call when we get home."

He looks at you in the rearview mirror and gives a smile. "Hopefully Madelyn's day hasn't been as strange."

>To be continued

That's it for tonight guys, I'd love to keep going, but I have someplace to be. Next update should be tomorrow or Saturday.

I'll probably do a Q& A session later tonight, so go to ask.fm/qmdralo if you have any questions.

Follow me @qmdralo to see when I update

I'll stay around here to discuss the quest for about half an hour

How long do you think we can stay ignorant of spooky things?
>>
>>42963745
You aren't ignorant of them. You saw ghosts in your old home, and Jim was quite surprised that you saw the bug yesterday. The question is more of how long Jim can keep things secret from you.
>>
>>42963579
I haven't read or watched yu yu , do we have to almost die to be able to be a detective? or since we have Bruce and best girl as our parents we were born with it?

Some people are born with Spiritual Awareness, some become aware of their spirit energy through death or near-death experiences. In your case, you were born with it.
