Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You killed a lot of spiders and that took most of the thread. The dwarven tribe was brought to the precipice of extermination, but with your help there are a few dozen survivors. Along with the hope of finding more dwarves elsewhere in the world, the dwarven race is not so hopeless as they might have been without your intervention. They did end up losing their elder, and you ended up knocked unconscious by overcasting, and after a brief chat with the god of Undeath you woke up in the dwarven halls. You were given a suit of runecrafted chain mail as a reward, and hailed as a hero of dwarvenkind. And that is where the twenty seventh installment of Feral Necromancer Quest concluded.

The cast:

Vlad Tepish: You, a masterful necromancer on a quest for immortality and dominion over the mortal world. You were kicked out of your tribe for your magic and it was the best thing to ever happen to you, as you found an ancient elven ruin and unlocked the knowledge it held.

Korg: Your orcish blackguard, you've bound him to your will and used him in battle, but have not spoken to him.

Halivean: Your elven blackguard, you've not bound him and he follows you to repay you saving his people. You know little of him.

Karist: The dwarven smith that made you the suit of runecrafted armour and welcomed you back to the runeforge as a hero.

Bathory, Lathrien and Melandie: Your usual party, including your lover, your apprentice, and your berserker respectively, are unlikely to join you this installment.

Economy: You have 1kg of gold.

Your minions:2 Orcish pyromancers, 1 Orcish Blackguard, 46 zombies of orcs and elves, 20 dire wolf mounts and 5 phantasms. A good number of giant spiders.

Your Holdings: A Human Village, An Elven Temple with a tower, A well-hidden and fortified cave.

Diplomacy: Human Tribes (Neutral); Dwarves (Revered, Open Trade); Forest Elves (Allies, Open Trade), Desert Elves (Unknown), Gnolls (Allies), Golems (ACCEPTABLE), Drow (Dead)

Goals: Achieve Immortality, Provide a good life for Bathory and the child.

Immortality option currently locked in: Draconic Magic

After you received your kingly gift from the dwarves you took stock of your surroundings. It is a sorry sight. When you left the dwarves seemed to be holding off the spiders well, but you had not accounted for the venom. Dozens of injured, a massive portion of the dwarven population are laying on the stone slabs, tended to by medics that can do little more but to bring water to the wounded. You are sure that not all of them would survive.

The survivors are grimly determined, however. There is no despair in the dwarven halls, or at the least none dare show it. You do a headcount of non-injured dwarves and your accounting comes to mere fifteen, as well as five children. You know that without any influx of new population the dwarves would die out in but a few generations, but you are certain that they plan to last those at the least.

As for your goals and desires, well, you have achieved your purpose here. You could leave now, but the cavern that the spiders swarmed from is large and unexplored. Dangers might lie within, as well as rewards.

Elves and orcs both have history with dwarves. Maybe they can point us to new stock in both variety and skills.

Explore the caverns after recuperation and influx of new workers.

Ask the dwarves themselves who would be best to bring in.

I like our dwarf allies. Course I also just like dwarves....

It is a somber gathering around the central forge where all idle dwarves are gathered. You approach them, and few eyes raise up from their downed comrades. The runecrafter is among them.

'Aye. The stone will take what it will.'
'I should try to help.'
'I'd say you've done enough, but hell, if you can then please do.'

Alchemy 20! Marginal success, best kind of success! Potency 5! Master level potion.

You have learned to make Universal Antidote potion. As long as the subject is alive when you apply it, the antidote removes all poison- mundane or magical- and furthermore repairs all damage that the poison has caused.

>By the way, the way that new alchemy works is, 1d50 for random discovery- you will always discover SOMETHING but it will be fully random. DC 20 alchemy check if you guess a type of potion exactly and DC 25 if there is something that would work in the same situation, but not to your exacting specification and DC 30 for something I have not considered at all. potency is 1d5, with 1 being something that could easily be achieved with normal chemistry and 5 being potentially game-breaking with certain types of potions. The potency cannot be improved after the original roll.

The potion works like a charm. Even with your limited resources you manage to set all but two injured dwarves- dying of internal bleeding, not poison- on their way to recovery. The population of dwarves has been restored to 28+5children.

Once you have finished your alchemy and treatment of the injured it is at least three hours later and only one of the dwarves is still paying attention once you are done.

'Blood on stone, Vlad Tepish, is there anything you cannot do?' the runesmith says.
'I am hoping to never find out, Karist.'
'Fucking blood on soiled stone, it was a good day when you found us.'
'It was. I have been pleased to have you to trade with.'
'So, who are those two?'
'Ah, my guard. They are... Let's see, Korg and Halivean if I recall correctly.'
'Yes, boss.' Korg says.
'Indeed, Lord Tepish,' Halivean says, capitalizing the Lord in an almost religious reverance.

'The orc is a mighty warrior, and anyone you would choose for thy servant must be of greater stock than the rest of their misbegotten kind.' Hal says.
You remember picking an orc at random. Well, not entirely, you picked the largest one.
'See, 'es alright.' Korg says.
'Indeed. I know the basics, but how exactly has your new unlife affected you?' you say.
'Well I ain't stronger than I was before,' curious. That would mean he had already achieved the absolute peak of orcish potential in that respect, 'but I go fasta now, and I can take a hit to my face even better than before. And livin' things seem to be dead scared of me. Tho that's not that new now I think of it.'
'I am faster, stronger, and I could run for days without tiring. Your gifts know no bounds. And sometimes I feel I could raise the dead just as you do, but it would be sacrilegious, of course, forgive me for even thinking it.' Hal says
'If it advances my cause I see no reason for you to not make the attempt,' you say.
'Of course, my lord, I shall not rest until I've succeeded in the task!'

'Sorry, Karist, the conversation somewhat got away from me. We were talking about how my relationship to your tribe might have changed now.'

'Aye. I figure I can get a few good people to come with us.'
'Indeed? There is always safety in numbers, though make sure they know the risks.'
'Vlad, every single dwarf knows how dangerous the caverns beyond the breach are.'
'Ah. Of course.'

Karist walks among the dwarves, and stops to talk to a select few. Some twenty minutes later he returns with six more warriors.

'Here we are, Vlad. These are all the good fighters that were willing to come.'
'I ain't no fighter, boy.'
'Of course, five more fighters and a miner.'
'A miner?' you say.
'Aye. Though I figure that I could smash a head just as well as stone with my pick.'
'Indeed?'
'Worked well on spiders.' the dwarf says and spits on the ground. You only now notice that this one is female. It is in general hard to tell with all the hair involved and the many layers of armour all dwarves wear. She is muscular, but relatively lean for a dwarf and she carries her pick with confidence.
'Very well. This is foremost a scouting mission. We explore, we grab what we can, and if there is no danger we consider mining any valuable ores and stones we find. If there is a fight too big to handle we let Vlad's minions hold the enemy at bay as we retreat. Is this clear?' Karist says.
'Aye.' the dwarves answer as one.
'Anything to add, Vlad?'
'No, that seems to cover it fully.'

You and seven dwarves, as well as your two blackguard advance, your undead horde not far behind. You take steps past the perimeter established by the golems and you venture forth into the cavern proper. You see the remnants of the battle immediately.

Leaving it by itself was. The issue is that it is a growing weapon and it grows too fast for Melandie to build resistance against it / to grow her willpower.

What we should have done is set a limiter to it, so that it cannot grow or only grows very slowly. Make it weak enough so that Melandie can overpower it. Don’t just let it grow rampant and then throw it away.

They're getting used to it.

There is little light in the caverns as you do not dare to call forth more than an ember from your staff. The trek, after the initial excitements is silent and slow, as you must allow your phantasms to scout out ahead and return every hundred meters or so. Nonetheless, you make solid progress and soon enough the miner woman whispers:

'Stone, there are more ores here than any three other digouts we've made,'
'Let us hope you can recover it,' you say.
'Bugger that, we will take it. One way or another, we must mine here. Gold, silver, iron. Everything we need to last decades, maybe centuries.'
'Is it really that important?'
'We live by the veins of earth, Vlad Tepish. If the minerals are rich enough, it might be worth the risk. Provided we do not run into anything truly too great to battle here.'

After that exchange you move along. You start noticing more and more spiderwebs, tough enough to hold a grown man and still somewhat sticky. You grow your light a little to make certain you can avoid them.

Still, even through the territory of the spider hivemind your progress is steady and your scouts do not report anything until you are more than a mile in.

When they return the next time, you hear a whisper, a sound on the wind that feels like it might have come from your mind.

'Living ahead.'

'Halt,' you say in a calm voice.

You close your eyes and leave your body behind. The astral space is a strange environment. Nothing is quite real, yet everything is recognizable. You know what the strange shapes mean, but the darkness is gone and the dwarves are tiny beacons of silvery light. Your minions are the only bastions of darkness that remain, and looking upon them from the astral realm leaves you with a sickly feeling in your... well, in your essence, for that is all you are.

You proceed onwards. You move at the literal speed of thought and it takes you less than a second to find the life your phantasms warned you about. They are fragile, small things. So much so that you thought there were only a dozen of them, when in truth there are over a hundred. And when you look closer, you realize that the lives are not weak, only tightly focused on something. Survival perhaps.

As you get close enough to touch, you discern the physical form of the creatures. They are... somewhat humanoid. Small and hunched and no species you have ever seen. Their facial features are lizard-like, but also remind you somehow of dogs. They skitter about, confused, as if some major change had occurred in their lives recently.

You see strands of darkness holding each of them to the ground and linking them back to a source of some sort behind you.

And you realize that the strands of darkness are diminishing. The creatures are gaining freedom they haven't had in a long time.

A litttle, and almost. That's not really the same. They are grumpy and greedy, and know while we have been very helpful, we ain't no prophesized saviors.
>>
'I know some shapeshifting and I've tried to turn into a dragon, but it never quite works.'
'Oh. Well, maybe if you try hard enough you can become a dragon and then it will be true in retrospect.'
'Perhaps. I did kill the spider queen. You should be free now, if it was indeed the spiders that kept you enslaved.'
'Yes, thought so. So, where are you? Are you a ghost? How can a ghost kill spiders?'
'I am not a ghost. Would you like to meet me in person?'
'Could be good. We can talk about things. Like dragons. Oh! Or the sun.'

You retreat back into your body.

'Very well. That cave over there is inhabited by small, lizardly creatures. I couldn't figure out what they are, but they seem harmless enough.'
'Lizardly? I ain't seen none like that.'
'I know. Perhaps they were a race though irrelevant by the man that kept my temple before. In either case they were enslaved by the spiders and I would see that they do not die in their newfound freedom.'
'Seems fair. Should we come with.'
'Perhaps one of you. If you are to co-habit then you might have to talk. If they attack, my magic should be more than enough to face them.'
'Sounds good, I'll go then.'

You approach the cave, and see it fully covered in spiderwebs. The webs here are dried and do not stick enough to hobble you, but they do slow you down.

You finally find the slave quarters and the conditions of the creatures are shocking. You smell creature refuse before you see them, and when you see the creatures they look deathly pale- you have a strong suspicion they were not meant to live in subterranean darkness.

'Oh! Necromancer man, right? And a friend? Welcome to the kobold lair!'

'No, but thank you for the offer.'

You pass through low caverns, all but needing to crawl through some of the spaces. You reach the room with the stones and a kobold, ancient looking and frail, is looking over them, clearly trying to figure something out.

You approach him.

'Greetings, archivist. May I have a look at the tablets?'
'Hmmmm? Yes, certainly. If you can read any more than I can, it is good.'

You see the stones. The writing is faint and faded, and while you know the language, the words are of older speech than yours and the style seems lyrical and abstract. You shall do your best to read them.

Natural 1! Critical Failure! On the upside, Research progress to 2 [1/2]. On the other:

You mouth the words as you read the faded words. It is difficult to read, and you can certainly understand how the kobolds, with no natural sources of light and few chances to train skilled scribes would have had grave trouble reading the words.

'And lo the dragon-... dragon- something shall slay the spider queen. And lo shall he free thine progeny. He shall read these words Klaatu Barada Nikto Awaken Necorax Awaken and...'

Shit. You feel magical energy forcibly drawn from you. You know you have cast a spell you did not intend. A moment passes. A terrible roar shakes the caverns.

'Kobolds! Listen! You need not follow a dragon! You need not follow anybody! You can all make your own decisions!'
'Is he... Is he talking shit about a dragon?'
'He is he is!'
'No, he's right! He was good to us, dragons do nothing!'
'What? You talking shit about dragons?'
'No no, little one is right! Dragons don't do nothing for us!'

The first punch lands and three kobolds jump into a melee scramble, biting and clawing each other. Hearing the commotion others find the scuffle and soon join in. Upon hearing that some of them are talking shit about dragons, the others start attacking. Having heard your voice, other kobolds attack those kobolds and soon enough it is a free-for-all brawl, with few even understanding what they are fighting for except for their lives.

The passages are entirely blocked by scuffling kobolds as you hear the first scream of a dwarf. It is one of terror, and you hope not of pain.

Feral Necromancer Quest, Where Skills Don't Matter and all the Rolls are Crits!

Double Nat 20! Huh, so apparently you already had unarmed 1. Well, now you have unarmed 2.

You snarl with fury in your badger form and it feels so very right. You bellow a challenge, but the kobolds are too involved in their own battle to notice. You make sure they fucking notice when you charge in there and toss them about, all about the cave in your furious badgery rage.

The thick scales underneath the fur of the beast block all of the measly attempts of the kobolds to strike or bite you and you cleave a wide path between the creatures without actually hurting any of them. Wide enough, in fact, that Karist can easily keep up with you.

You navigate the caves quickly and when you exit there is a gargantuan skeletal dragon between you, your minions and the dwarves. You now realize truly that the dragon you bound is not merely young. It is a child. The bones of the wyrm could be confused for tree trunks. The skull alone is nearly the size of the first dragon you fought. Even were it to stop motionless and not attack you, it would still be a serious problem to move over, through or around it to reach the dwarves. As it is, it senses your presence immediately, turns its head towards you and roars, the noise fully magical, as it has no larynx nor lungs.

Necromancy 32! Success! Unarmed 18! Failure!

You order your minions to swarm the creature. By sheer mass there is not so much difference between all of your minions together and the dragon on its own. The spiders prove invaluable in the confrontation, as not only can they carry their riders literally on top of the creature, but also they can still produce some web, enough to hamper the creatures movements somewhat.

You think you see an opening. You shapeshift into your most powerful battle form- a dire bear- and you charge for it, simply trying to dismantle the dragon bone by bone. It is only your thick, draconic hide that saves you from injury. The dragon raises one of its claws and swipes at you off-handedly, throwing you a dozen feet in the air and into a wall.

>You have taken one wound, soaked by dragonskin. Dragonskin charges [1/2]

>>
You swiftly drop out of bear form before you hit the ground, making sure to contain the dragonskin on you. You needn't have bothered as the dwarven runemail protects you from the impact of any jagged rocks you might have hit.

You focus your will on the dragon and utter one word. 'Fall.' And it does. The joints lose their magical might, and the whole creature stumbles and falls. Then, you hear a shout from above.

'Waaaaaauuuugh!' Korg had skittered all the way up to the ceiling of the cavern atop his mount, and then dropped off it, his massive warhammer in hand. He drops and smashes at the beasts back, striking its left wing at the joint.

And the wing, the size of any roof in your human village, snaps off. Korg goes to work, smashing and bashing the downed dragon.

The dragon might be down and not have enough strength to pull itself up physically, but you feel a shimmer of necromantic magic. It takes direct control of its limbs and bones and twirls around towards you.

It doesn't need to breathe in, as it has no lungs, but it breathes out black fire, straight at you.

Holy shit, you passed.

It sears and for a moment you think you are done for. But you recognize the flame. It is not true fire, but necromantic energy turned searing by thought.

And what thought makes it can unmake. You pit your own necromancy against that of the dragon. And Necorax is found wanting. The darkfire flows over you as so much a cool breeze in the spring.

>You are covered entirely by the flame and cannot be seen by the dragon. Strike at its jaw with sword and staff.

14! Failure!

You charge out of the darkness and strike at the dragon.

And nothing happens. Your sword, mighty as it is fails to even seriously nick the dragon. It opens its jaw and takes you in its mouth.

You are grabbed by the dragon. If not for your armour and your curse its teeth would have crushed you already, but even with magical strength alone it raises you up in the air, ready to drop you, or crush you into another wall.

32 and 25! Success and success!

'Lord Tepish has shown me the way! To glory! To victory!' Hal says. As he charges blindly with his short spear and shield. And the dead follow him, in the same apparent zealous frenzy. Hal himself manages to pin the other wing to the ground with his spear, and the other undead swarm over the gargantuan wyrm, chipping away at its bones, scale and ancient leather.

The beast stumbles and throws you, but as you fly you drag its magical ability out with you with Vampiric touch.

>Roll 1d100 for duration of Int 7.

And as its both physical and magical strength has been completely negated your minions swarm it. You do land on your face, and your armour offers you little protection.

Less protection.

Maybe a crowned helm, but not a crown.

But crowns are meant for kings, and Vlad is no king, nor do I believe he thinks he is one.
>>
You work quickly, creating a crown of dragon teeth and bone. You bind the fleeting spirit to the item and it is charged with magic of great power. For once, the item feels truly full of energy, as if you could fit no more within it.

>I really don't want to commit to a specific enchantment after nearly six hours of posting, as I don't really have a cool enough idea. I will think of something by the next game.

And here concludes the twenty-seventh installment of Feral Necromancer Quest. You have gained 3exp for a total of 6.

I am almost entirely certain that we are on Shamanism 7 right now, as you never got the big flashy shamanism 8 spell and picked dragon 4 instead. If I'm wrong, give me a thread number and I'll double check.

If you meant shamanism 8 right now, carry on.
>>
>>42914407
You are correct, let's max it then we can focus on dragon
>>
>>42914278
shaman 8 please.
also doesn't this mean we can raise even more spiders since this being at 8 lowers the cost more?
does it get lower at 9?
>>
>>42914407
Thought we had 8 allready. Raising it to 8 it is.
>>
Okay then.

You have learned Shamanism 8!

First off, the cost of animal minions is reduced to 1/8th of its base, meaning that all cost of your animal minions is further halved. Your giant spider minions now only cost 50 units and your dire wolf mounts now only cost 10, meaning that you've freed up 60 units of undead.

Secondly, you have learned
Storm of the Elements: This is an evocation. In a dozen seconds you focus your mind and unleash and enrage all of the elemental spirits in the vicinity, creating a storm of massive force and impact. Even in the most temperate climates ice, water, wind and earth will tear at your enemies, and the stranger the location, the greater the effect.

Necromancy bonus: you add life-draining necromantic energy to the storm

Draconic magic bonus: [locked]

Magic doesn't exactly give you many scalpels in this setting. Thus the apocalypse.
>>
>>42914571
could we control it to not hurt friendlies or would that need a roll?
>>
>>42914592
it would probably have something to do with masking their spirits and turtling up while death and destruction happens around us.
>>
>>42914567
I'd think vol 1 should be over by then, and I am doing a massive mechanics overhaul, largely intended to deal with stat bloat when that happens. But I might just introduce something like feats for high skills/schools of magic by then too.

>>42914592
All evocations require rolls, and as always it would depend on the situation. You can determine the diameter pretty exactly, but if everyone's in melee you'd be hella hard pressed to actually avoid hurting allies
>>
Also, sorry, can't really stick around for much longer, getting late here and I'm no longer a student that can stay up till 6. I am hoping to run the Lathrien PoV game Wednesday night, but no promises.
