In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

You have sent out a Strike Cruiser to crush a minor rebellion on the world of San Larion, Kronus, one of your most trusted brothers was leading the mission...
+++
As you retreat towards the Thunderhawk, one of the parties you sent out into the city contacts you:
>Chapter Master, this is Sergeant Hasvar of the 5th Company, my men have approached one of the depots that were guarded by our brothers. Most of the place has been recently repaired and repainted, but we found a few holes in the walls that could have only been left by the bolter shells... After checking the nearby rubish pile we also found a shard of shoulderpad which clearly belonged to one of our brothers, identification at the moment is not yet possible. We also found strange traces leading towards an abandoned industrial warehouse nearby, they seem to be fresh, should we investigate?
+++

Sergeant Hasvar has 3 squads under his command and has fresh trail of the unknown hostiles. Should he pursue or wait until Quintor arrives with his command squad and veteran squad to support him? (it would take about an hour by Thunderhawk)
>>
>>42906324
Follow the tracks and scout out the terrain. But wait for Quintor and some veterans to reinforce them before they investigate inside the warehouse.

While you are ascending into the orbit your vox caster comes to life and a harsh voice of your old comrade greets you:
>This is Captain Quintor of the 5th. We have just landed at the location. Hasvar has done a good job of surrounding and scouting the area, however we have not yet entered the industrial complex itself. I have half a company with me here, including Devastator support, do I have the permission to pursue the enemy? Also, what's the situation with locals, is the governor on our side? What rules of engagement should we follow in case of an encounter?

+If you wish him to track down the enemy, roll his Intelligence, you need 2 DoS for real results as enemy had some time to get away.+
>>
>>42906461
>do I have the permission to pursue the enemy?
Affirmative Brother

>Also, what's the situation with locals, is the governor on our side?
Unknown. Suspect some kind of psychic manipulation is subverting the populace. Avoid if possible, but do not hesitate to act in self-defence.

>What rules of engagement should we follow in case of an encounter?
If it's human, surround, make contact and engage if hostile. Apprehend and question if not.
If it's not human, you know what to do.
The Emperor is with you brother.

And the roll.
>>
>>42906461
A bit of helpful criticism, this is a bit too open-ended. I can't tell what my options are here.
>what's the situation with locals, is the governor on our side
I don't fucking know.
You know what? Sure, let's track him down. I don't really see any other option.
>>
>Emperor protects. Quintor out.
Your servitor assistant hands you over a dataslate showing you operational data. You can see dozens of life-sign triangles moving towards the target location - Quintor has started his assault. As you nod in approval, Brethorius enters the room:
>Milord, I've spoken with Renard regarding his doubts about the planet and our missing brothers. I was thinking that maybe we should be more careful with the locals. I still can't get over the idea that something made Kronus and his men simply disappear... I've had an idea. Let me try to kidnap the planetary governor. If there's someone who knows something, it'll be him. What do you think?
>>
>>42906775
>They're definitely hiding something brother, but I'd prefer to do a bit more investigating whilst under the radar of the local authorities. The last thing we want is planet-wide aggravation. If nothing comes up we'll try more 'proactive' methods of getting information. Like kidnapping.
>If it comes to that though, you have a plan?
>>
>>42906775
>I've had an idea. Let me try to kidnap the planetary governor.
I have an idea, you keep that up and we'll all be excommunicatio traitoris.
No, let's do what we were doing before he had this idea.
>>
>>42906775
Can we use our Psychic powers to learn anything at the moment?
>>
>>42906825
It's a pretty shitty planet to be honest. We could probably bombard the entire place claiming its been taken over by genestealers with relatively minimal fallout.

Obviously not going to though.
>>
Brethorius smiles:
>Indeed. From when we visited his palace I noticed that Don Siempre doesn't seem to be putting much effort into securing his home. There's a mountain range nearby, some 20 miles away, we could land covertly there, run to the palace with light armour, deactivate defences with an EMP blast, then kidnap the governor and be back to the ship before sun rises. I think I could do it with a squad of good scouts and Geron.

While you were talking a report arrives from Quintor:
>Milord, we've secured the industrial complex. It seems that it was used either as a holding pen for some animals or it was infested by xenos of some sort, there's plenty of genetical debris here. The only thing that really worries me is that they have managed to evade us using sewer system that has a few openings in the complex. I have enough men to pursue them, but if it comes to fighting we'll no longer be able to use our numbers against them. Alternatively we can glass the entrances into the sewers and retreat, so we are awaiting your orders.
>>
>>42906939
Tell Quintor to gather the genetic samples and get them back to Klementhos for testing.
Pull up city plans and find every large entrance to those sewers and have marines watch them. Not guarding, just watching from a concealed position. Wait and see if anything appears.

To Brethrorius, tell him to assemble his team and begin training and running simulations for the mission, I want them tip-top if we go through with it.

>>42906978
>Understood. We'll be back at Aspera Dominus in two hours. However remember, that Klementhos is working at his laboratory in Tombstone, we'll not be able to run proper tests until we get back to him.

Brethorius thanks for trusting him and leaves the room. Laptus, who was standing with other officers at the side looks at you and silently approaches:
>Milord, we don't have the proof that the governor is heretic, at least not yet. What you are planning is treason. It is my duty as the Chaplain of this Chapter to warn you of this, however I trust you known what you are doing.

>I'm going to wait and see the results of the sample tests and the marines watching the sewers before going through with it Laptus. If my suspicions are correct and this world has been infested with genestealsers they must be contained by any means necessary. The High Lords, the Inquisition and the Emperor would agree. Your spying efforts take around two days in total. On the first day you land your serfs in non-suspicious locations and they go out to gather info... Soon, your vox caster starts reporting various rumours.

>It seems that Governor Don Siempre has abadoned his habit of appearing in public events. Once a "people's man", he's now distant and seldom seen in public.

>Lord Gaddrian has suffered a fatal accident on the hunt last week. Everyone suspects that it was organised by Larion Ursus, everyone knows that Lord Gaddrian was one of the political exiles and was sent here from Tachion Primaris because he attempted to seduce Larion's daughter.

>Local cult of the Eaglebearers has been gaining strength in San Larion for a few years now. Last month, just after the riots, Don Siempre assigned Salamis Metaxos, the High Priest of Eaglebearers on San Larion, as his permanent advisor.

>Local xenos, known as Tsai, have been getting more troublesome of late. Even smugglers, who are often suspected of working with them, report this...

Klementhos will get to that as soon as he's done with the DNA tests. [roll d100]
>Well, it seems we have the results, sir. I have bad news and some more bad news. First of all it seems that what we are facing here are species known as Corporaptor hominis or alternatively Corporaptor ymgarli, as they were encountered for the first time in moons of Ymgarl in Tiamet system in M35. In Low Gothic they are usually called Genestealers and they are among the nastiest xeno species out there. They usually infiltrate planets and then strike from within, however their purestrain specimen are extremely capable combatants on their own, so don't presume that they are weak because they infiltrate. Esteemed Chapter of the Blood Angels was almost wiped out in 996.M40 when they encountered them. From whole Chapter only fifty marines survived! Only fifty, I repeat! Another bad news is that the DNA sample is too old and I wasn't able to get any more precise details about it. I can't say what stage of genestealer left them or how old it is, etc. What are we going to do, milord? Can I share this information with the rest of the brothers?

>>
>>42908511
I approve anything that involves promethium, but we shall not thread lightly on these grounds. If these creatures are as widespread as we think, I fear we might have to fight on the surface too, not only in the sewers.

Multiple teams assaulting the sewers with a picket of brothers holding the entrances outside should be good, although I think we should gather more data about the sewers first. Maps, plans, anything that could help us navigate them.
>>
>>42908511
Also: they'll surely have exits/entrances to the sewers we don't know about. What would you guys suggest about this?
>>
>>42908582
Yeah good point. Data data data.
Gives time for the =][= to arrive as well.

Devote forces to scout out every single entrance to the sewers. Maybe revenants can steal plans for the sewers from city hall if we can't access it freely.

>>42908604
Drop a macrocannon shell on an uninhabited area nearby then record the resulting seismic shockwaves.
Should give a good map of the tunnel system.
>>
>>42908626
Also, this is pretty obvious but I'm saying it for the sake of thoroughness: after any on-ground mission, no one comes back in without going through quarantine and a dna test first.

I like the macrocannon idea but obviously we should keep it last in our to-do list, it'd give our plans away in a second.
>>
>>42908701

>Sir, it seems we are approaching a trap. Enemies were foolish enough to try to hide themselves by using earth and leaves as camouflage, however our termal sensors have detected them anyway. It seems that the location from where the beacon is coming is a small church on top of a hill, we read 6 subjects there, from what we can analyse from here, their life signatures seem to be very closely matching those of missing Space Marines. However around the church and further down the hill there are something close to 3000 hostiles hiding in the bushes. I've called off original plan to drop assault marines before consulting with you. If we have any free birds I suggest we send in 2 for air coverage and ground support and another to tail the enemies as they break upon the walls of our astartes

How many do you number?
>Thousands, many thousands of the Lower Ones, a few hundreds of Higher Ones and only a handful of the Elevated Ones... No!!! Not the neuroglove!!!
Where is the Patriarch?
>We have never seen the Old Father, but he is hidden somewhere safe in the city... Ciudad del Oro, that's where he's located, we pray to him for Good Feeling, we often do...
Where are your strongholds and where are your secret pathways?
>We use sewers to move as streets are not yet ready for us to use, not yet, too early, but soon all will hail the Old Father!!! We have also been at the Great Temple... It's underneath the hydroelectric dam outside the city... Many thousands of the Lower Ones dwell and reproduce there, but there are other hideouts, other temples as well... No!!! Leave my teeth alone!!!

Oh good, not too many purestrains yet.

I suppose we should purge the great temple first? But I'm wary of tipping off the patriarch that we're onto him before the Inquisitor gets here.

Best case would be to establish positions that are relatively defended able and that we can use to keep surveillance as well as to try to keep eyes on the most important members of the planet that command highly valuable and strategic sectors

Question; We, the Chapter Master, commander of over 700 geneforged, power armoured killingmachines, are actually micromanaging an operation done by one of our most experienced marines?
Really? What's the point of second in commands, and officers anyways?
>>
>>42911861
And
>Why attack now? Why start a civilian uprising instead of slowly usurping the entire population?
>>
>>42911986
700 really isn't that many people involved in a planetary operation. Well it is by Astartes standards, but the mission is of extremely high importance. The Marines who have disappeared cannot be easily replaced.
>>
>>42911986
We do have 2 other operations going on without our direct involvement at the moment.

We've nothing else to do and it's good to farm some xp for the chapter master. We did initially leave it in charge of an officer but then he went missing and when we tried to find him we found the world infested with genestealers.

We can leave if we had to though, if there's something more important to do.
>>
>>42912131
Yes I remember we sent the last of our Deathwishers. Man I didn't think we'd send them into their wish. It was supposed to be a simple riot.

By the way, there were a politicalngroup that tried to gain power before the seales came. Should we secure them now, and make sure that the colony stays in good hands once purged? They could be useful in the long run.

+Bombardment+
Your Thunderhawks engage unsuspecting enemies like furious fists of the Emperor himself. Heavy Bolter turrets chatter stopping only to reload every minute, while Hellfire missile and other munitions colour the night sky with beautiful shades of red and orange. Thousands of enemies who were hiding in the bushes are caught unaware, they now scream and flail, like burning shadows in the dark...
Hostiles: 3000 [roll for you kills, pick one weapon per player]
Hellfire missiles: 3d10 x60 kills
Heavy Bolter turrets: 10xd100 x1 kills
Incendiary munitions: 10xd10 x20

+Extraction+
Vanguard and assault marines, led by the brave sergeant Ation descend onto the roof of the church and then proceed downstairs, where they find 6 of their brothers. All of them seem to be healthy, only slightly bruised or lightly wounded, but all of them are unconscious or in deep sleep, which is a rare thing for space marine... Ation realises that they are a bait and orders defensive formation around your brothers. They will be taken to the ship and hopefully saved

Ation's action were exactly what genestealers were expecting. From corners of the church dozens of them swarmed towards the marines as secret entrances into the sewers were opened. Suddenly stairs that marines used to descend collapsed, half of them still being down in the church.
>No grave shall take us!
Bolters mowed down wave after wave of surging enemy mutants, horrible hybrids, stuck somewhere between men and beasts
in their twisted evolutionary chain. It was going well. Then the first Purestrain appeared. Citadius didn't even get a chance to react as his innards were scattered across the wall. Ation charged the Purestrain in anger and after a fierce exchange of blows cut him in half. Then the second Purestrain yanked Ation's right arm out if it's socket, while puncturing his torso in at least two places. Fidius, Plaxor and Kadran fell where they stood, firing at the enemy to the last round and then engaging in close quarters combat. Hybrids brought them down under the weight of their dead bodies and third Purestrain gracefully finished them off one by one. Sulemion killed it, but was decapitated while he was preparing his plasmagun for another shot. Asteriad, his brother, real brother, who was with him since childhood and throughout his training, also fell a minute later after killed another Purestrain. Brother Davos took up Ation's sword and led a breakout charge, trying to make his way through to the door of the church, where outside he and his comrades would be defended by the Thunderhawks. Miraculously, he survived the charge, but brothers died left and right. Kaprod, Latimius, Havenor, Pulgar, all good men, died to make the way for the others. Brother Apothecary Siderius even managed to drag out mauled Sergeant Ation on his shoulders for, but the last Purestrain managed to drag him back into the ruins just moment before Davos called in an airstrike on the church itself, burying both his dead brothers and genestealers...

It's a good thing that your Thunderhawks have used up most of their ammunition on the enemy...

There are 20 marines left on the ground. We will assume that killing one marine will take 10 times the punishment which killing a hybrid would take.

Please make a roll for a single Hellfire missile (d100, hits on 40 or less), kills 6 marines

Roll d100 for the Heavy Bolter, every 10 points kill a marine

Roll d100 for Thunderhawk cannon (60% to hit, kills 2 marines, +1 kill for every DoS)

After a single strafing run the brothers onboard Thunderhawk will destroy the internal door and overpower the pilot. Roll d100 for that
1 - 60 Pilot survives, Thunderhawk lands safely
61 - 80 Pilot is dead, Thunderhawk lands safely
81 - 90 Pilot survives, Thunderhawk crashes
91- 100 Pilot is dead, Thunderhawk crashes

After the pilot goes mad you suddenly feel a strong psychic discharge somewhere nearby in the woods... Could it be? You've felt such despair before, despair of a psyker who realises that his powers cannot help him anymore, psyker who is consumed by his own gift.
>What is it, milord?
Brethorius asks.
>It seems we have one less problem to take care off, brother. Their Magus is dead. Just in case, I'll direct another Thunderhawk run on the location where I last felt him. The plans didn't go the way he wanted, so he tried to fix them... and overdid himself. Now we just need to slay the Patriarch.

Thunderhawk cannon kills 4 marines, while Hellfire missile misses and Bolters kill another 5 brothers... A dark day for the Chapter.

2. Kastatius
3. Cirilius
4. Zoavor
5. Wilkeron
6. Hatemis
7. Kantabrian

However there is a silver lining to everything. The Magus of the Cult is dead and his best troops are slaughtered. You know the location of their Great Temple and you saved 6 of your brothers. Also, your troops gain proficiency for fighting a new enemy - Tyranids!

Let us end session here for the day.
