You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

And right now you were in a deep pile of shit.

Currently, it was just you, Tarin, Rock, and Alex and about a dozen peasant yeomen in ultralight VTs up against three of Reikland's new Panther VTs, as well as about eight Lynxes. As if to add to your issues, the yeomen had already fired off their recoilless rifles, leaving just their melee lances as their remaining viable anti-armor armament. And the cherry on top of the pile of worseness was the fact that the Reikland formation was being led by Gregor, who already had a bit of a grudge against you.

"Well shit, this isn't good." Rock observes.

Yeah, no shit.

"W-we'll defend you" One of the yeomen stammers. "It is our purpose to protect our lords!"

"No need for that." You growl, eyeing the Reikland tanks surrounding you. Retreating would do you no good, as they'd all pick you off anyways. The only way was to take the fight to them. "All units engage!"

"Whatever you sigh." Rock sighs."What's the plan?"

We came here to kill Reikzis, not brains-in-jars, and if need be we will die doing so. But, more likely, we'll just take out the heavier and more elite tanks, leaving the lighter but still dangerous brains-in-jars to plink away at our force until we get some backup.

Also...

AWWYEEEEAH, /tg/, it's SATURDAY NIGHT and Vertical Tank Quest is up! Let's grind some metal and roll some dice!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tp87Jc6k1w4
>>
All right you gits, let me tell you why going after the Panthers was the incorrect choice. Let's be realistic here, every gun the enemy has could potentially kill any of our guys. The Lynxes happen to be easier to kill, as well as being the more numerous. We end up only having to worry about 3 guns if we take out the Lynxes first, as opposed to the 8 guns if we take out the Panthers.
>>
>>42878142
Either way, we're fucked though? Wouldn't it be a good idea to just take out the more heavier tank?

"Everybody! Focus fire on the Panthers!" You yell. "If we can take them out we'll stand a better chance against those Lynxes!"

"I hope you know what you're doing." Alex murmurs.

You watch Alex and Rock's VT charge forward, its cannon belching fire.

"Tarin, full speed forward! Get in close with those Panthers!" You order.

"Roger. Full speed forward." Tarin repeats.

"Yeomen! Charge!" You bellow.

The yeomen give a small battlecry as they charge forward on their tiny little VTs, their upbringing making them incapable of disobeying an order.

You watch as the yeomen charge in on their ultralight VTs, bobbing and weaving as the Panthers instinctively turn their cannons to fire. Their first two shots miss, landing harmlessly in between the swarm of tiny attackers.

Meanwhile, you and Alex fire the cannons on your respective VTs. Your shot scores a solid hit on one of Panthers, punching a deep dent into its front plate and forcing it back. Unfortunately, Alex's shot is a bit too high, and it sails uselessly into the air.

And then the Lynxes automatically begin tracking the yeomen, their programmed though processes classifying them as the biggest current threats.

"Tarin! Position us between the Lynxes and the yeomen!" You bark.

"What?!" Tarin asks in surprise.

"Do it! Those Lynxes are going to tear them up! Our armor can handle their cannons, theirs can't!"

"Whatever you say..." Tarin frowns as she hits the forward throttle, and Clementine gallops forward before spinning to face the Lynxes.

Tarin brings Clementine to a halt right in the line of fire of the Lynxes.

"Brace for impact!" She yells.

The interior of your VT suddenly vibrates violently as 75mm shells slam into the front armor. Fortunately, Wolverines were built to be tough bastards, and the armor holds, though some of the electronics inside the hull were smoking or sparking, and there was an incredibly loud ringing in your ears.

Fortunately though, you managed to buy enough time for the yeomen to charge in. Two of them manage to hit the legs on the Panther you had stunned. Their contact lances shatter the Panther's vulnerable ankles, and the whole VT topples over.

You then see Rock and Alex's VT take a direct hit from Gregor's Panther. The shell misses the crew compartment, thankfully, but it slams into the engine block, gouging a shallow hole in the hull that begins to vomit a column of thick, ugly smoke.

"Alex? Rock? Do you read?" You ask in a panic.

"We're immobilized, but we can still fire!" Alex coughs.

Meanwhile, the yeomen who haven't completely expended their lances yet rally for a fresh charge. A solid green light notifies you that the next shell in your cannon is loaded. You try to aim but the smoke in the air and the lingering disorientation from the shell impacts sting your eyes and blur your vision.

You swivel your turret to continue to engage the Panthers, this time focusing on Gregor's Panther. Meanwhile, you see the turret on Rock and Alex's VT slowly spin to fire again. The yeomen who still had working lances move to charge in again, while the Lynxes reload.

You then remember that now that you were interposed between the Lynxes and the yeomen, you'd likely be their next target.

Better wrap this up, then.

You fire again, this time striking Gregor's Panther dead center. Your shell actually strikes at the base of its cannon. The shell explodes, snapping the cannon off like a toothpick and sending it twirling through the air before landing several hundred meters away with a loud THUNK. Meanwhile, the yeomen charge in, scoring a few hits on Gregor's Panther but only scoring minor damage on one of his legs.

The second Panther tries to help its leader, but is stunned by a solid hit from Alex, buying you a few more seconds.

"Tch. To think I would have to retreat again." Gregor growls over the radio as he backs off. You're about to aim for a follow up shot when the Lynxes rush in, shielding him with their own hulls as they fire.

"Tarin, Evasive manuevers!" You bark.

At the last second, Tarin jerks the control stick to the side, causing Clementine to strafe sideways. Most of the Lynxes fail to make the proper targeting correction, and the majority of the shots miss. However, one manages to graze the side, striking the recoilless rifles mounted on the right side and causing them to explode.

"Well, there goes half our firepower." You wince.

"Well, at least it didn't breach the armor." Tarin shrugs.

At this point, the remaining Panther retreats, and the Lynxes begin to back off as well, no doubt prioritizing protecting their retreating commander. The yeomen begin to cheer.

"Knock it off. The battle isn't over yet." You snap. "Get your weapons reloaded and ready."

"Yes milord!" The yeomen quickly get to work.

"Rock, Alex, how's the damage? Can you get moving?" You ask, their VT still not moving.

"Not good." Rock grunts, the sound of clanking periodically interrupting his voice. "That last hit did a real number on the engine. I think I can fix it, but it might take a while."

"Roy, they're bound to send reinforcements." Tarin warns.

Well, you doubted the yeomen had any technical knowledge, and you were pretty sure with Tarin's help, Rock would get repairs done much sooner. However, that would leave Clementine immobile, essentially turning her into a fancy bunker.

"All right, Tarin, position us behind that hill, and then help out Rock and Alex to fix up their VT."

"Roger." Tarin nods. She maneuvers Clementine right behind the crest of a nearby hill, which provided both great visibility as well as a measure of cover against enemy attacks. The yeomen take up positions in a loose circle as pickets.

"Take care of her for me." Tarin says as she unbuckles her seat belt and climbs out of the hatch. You can only watch as she drops down and sprints for Rock and Alex's crippled VT.

With no immediate threats, you turn to the primary battle. The Knights Errant were still tangling with the primary Reikland force, but by this time the main Breton force had arrived as well, slamming in the Reikland line like a tidal wave. Contact lances explode and rupture Lynxes like balloons. Armored feet crush foxholes and gun positions. Cannons and guns and rockets sweep defenders from the castle walls. Up close, the Breton VTs truly were monsters.

However, the Bretons were not invincible by any means. Artillery continues to fall among the Breton lines, breaking up their cohesion and stunning VTs. Unengaged Lynxes and AT guns farther behind the front line begin systematically picking off individual knights, and you watch as one blue and red VT is breached by a heavy AT gun and explodes.

You wonder what kind of difference those Panthers could have made if they had gotten to the frontline.

"Milord! Enemies arriving!" One of the yeomen radio in. "Four steeds and numerous infantry!"

Well, it's less of that and more about a wall of steel with explosive tips impacting a line of VTs designed for medium-range skirmishes. The Bretons are using near-suicidal tactics backed by crazy logistics and a ton of expendable infantry in light power armor. The Reikzis' hardware can't stand up to that in close quarters. Their best option will be artillery moonscaping, which it seems they're already doing. Two different styles of warfare slamming into each other, while we play mountain-man sharpshooter on the sidelines.

Gotta say, Merc, this is good stuff! Keep it up!

Yalp. The Bretons are all about glorious charges and relying on their massive peasant class to make the nobles' luxurious lifestyles possible. This is how they fight their wars too. On the other hand, their wide variety of powerful weapons and the fact that all their pilots are armored inside their VTs means that these guys hit like a ten-ton hammer on initial charges. Good punch, low endurance, probably not much in the way of reserves.

You first shot nails the lead Lynx, punching straight through the front and back. The stricken VT doesn't even explode, but grinds to a halt, smoke leaking from both the entry and exit wounds. The remaining three Lynxes immediately spin around, facing your direction. Little bastards found you really damn fast, and the start firing wildly in your direction. Thankfully, their short barrel 75s couldn't match the range of your long 76.

However, that infantry might be a problem as you could see easily a platoon of infantry spreading out as they advance on your positions.

You swear you see your life flash before your eyes when the shell strikes Clementine, but fortunately, her armor manages to deflect the shell, merely rocking the entire vehicle.

Meanwhile, the yeomen do their best against the infantry, raking them with machine gun fire and recoilless rifle fire. They inflict serious casualties, but you see a few yeomen fall as well, either getting hit by a lucky bullet or exploding from a well aimed rocket. You realize that not all of the infantry are those undead monsters. There are a few live ones mixed in apparently reserved as special weapon teams.

"Tarin, I really, REALLY hope you're done." You mutter as shells from the remaining Lynxes slam into the hillside in front of you.

"On my way."

You look to see Tarin sprinting across the field towards you, as Rock and Alex's VT, now operational again, stumbles forward, firing its cannon and snapping the leg of one of the Lynxes in two, sending it falling.

"Looks like you took a hit." Tarin notes as she drops down from the hatch.

"Ah, nothing I couldn't handle." You say with feigned confidence.

"I'm sure." Tarin says simply as she revs up the engine. "Orders?"

You nail the final Lynx, blowing the entire top half of the machine off. Meanwhile, Rock, Alex, and the Yeomen charge forward and mop up the rest of the infantry. The undead troopers are easy targets, and the living among them even easier when they try and flee, leaving them at the mercy of Alex's cannon.

With a lull in the fighting, you take a quick roll call. Obviously, you and Tarin were still fine. Alex and Rock were still active as well, though their VT was badly banged up. The yeomen took a battering, though, with five killed and the rest suffering various types of damage. There were also low on ammo at this point, as well.

And in the distance, you could see exhaust plumes coming from behind the trees. Another force was coming, but you had no way of know what or how large at this point.

That's a bit farther in the future.

Speaking of which, you know the US Army's biggest mistake? Their artillery simply sucks. They don't have good SPGs, and they've been getting rid of FASCAM and DPICM because the polticians don't like the potential for unexploded ordnance. Let me tell you, in a case where you'd need either of those, UXO is the LAST thing you'll be worried about.

"Yeoman, follow us." You order as you turn Clementine around. "Tarin, full speed back to our lines."

"Roger." Tarin nods.

The journey back to your lines is much shorter than before, mostly because now the Bretons had managed to advance them forward. Up ahead, you could now see Breton's flag, or more specifically, the King's flag flying proudly over Round Top. The position had been taken.

"Looks like they did it." You must.

"Yeah, but at a cost." Tarin notes.

You pop open your hatch to get a better view, and sure enough, you see it. Dozens of Breton VTs lay, knocked over or burnt out across the battlefield among hundreds of Lynxes. The bodies of men at arms and other peasant foot troops lay scattered all over the field, mixed in with Reikland infantry, both previously living and undead.

"Jeez, so that's what a Breton battle looks like, then." You grimace.

"It's brutal, that's for sure." Tarin nods.

Up ahead, you see a pair of VTs approaching. It was the rest of your platoon, much to your relief. Their VTs looked intact, though they had obviously picked up some new battle damage.

"Roy! Tarin!" Alfie says happily. "You're all right!"

"Hope you killed a bunch of those Riek bastards!" Axel whoops.

"Good, you're all still alive." Bannon grunts. "Looks like you two have been through the ringer."

"Yeah, it's been a rough day." You understate. "So is the battle over?"

"More or less." Bannon replies.

"Lord Artois clearing out the last pockets of resistance in the castle, and he's planning to move his headquarters there." Parker continues. "We were just heading out set up a roadblock in case the Reiklanders try to counterattack. You want to help us out or are you going to head back to resupply?"

Ahahahahahahahaha.

Just off the top of my head, Pilckem Ridge alone had a 70% casualty rate in 1917, and I can pull up dozens of similarly horrific battles pretty easily.

*You* are full of shit.

Sure, but knowing and seeing the actual thing will be pretty bad.

For someone commanding troops for the first time, it might be traumatizing . I would think.

>>42883101
Like I said, in very strange circumstances. I could cherrypick incidents in Romania where there were 100% casualty rates. For the most part, casualties were nowhere near those levels.

It's not really "strange circumstances" if there are dozens and dozens of engagements throughout the war, often on a huge scale, where such casualties occur.

First marne had a quarter-million casualties each side, a 35% casualty rate for the Germans.

Italian casualties at Caporetto actually exceeded their starting number of troops deployed at the start of the battle.

Monastir was about 40%, roughly, for the Allies.

Romani, 67% losses for the Ottomans, 90% if you count prisoners.

Lake Naroch, 30-50% for both sides.

Verdun, 30-40%, both sides.

It's not "strange circumstances" if every other major bloody battle of the war has frankly appalling casualty statistics.
>>
>>42883198
lets see Rock's VT got fucked up, we also got some damage our self's, and just about every one is low on ammo.

ohh and we need sleep
>>
>>42883198
Adding queerness to Roy would make him bisexual, not gay.
>>
>>42883241
And you know what all these battles have in common? They last weeks, months, or even years. This is a single bloody engagement, and frankly, it's intellectual dishonesty to believe otherwise. And as I've said, you only see those sorts of figures in very strange circumstances. That's why I said incidents, because generally they would be folded into a larger battle later on. For example, let's take your Verdun. The initial stages had like a 3% casualty rate. And that was over a bloody week.
>>
>>42883316
So does that mean, Roy did very poorly as a commander when it comes to the lives of his men?
>>
>>42883316
Romani was *Two Days*.

Megiddo, which had similar loss rates, was six.

Naroch, 12.

The only dishonesty here is your refusal to admit that you're blatantly wrong.
>>
>>42883338
Not really. In platoon level engagements, this sort of thing happens. My beef is someone saying it applied across the entire battlefield.
>>
>>42883356
And to that end, I will respond
>Ottomans
>>
>>42883390

"No thanks, we're heading for the rear." You sigh. "We've been through some serious shit."

"Yeah, it sure looks like it." Bannon nods. "Go get some rest. You earned it, kid."

"Yeah..." You sigh.

"Your battered convoy heads to a forward supply area, hastily set up to transport supplies closer to the new front line. There, a makeshift motor pool is set up, and the squires running it immediately take your VTs in for repair and rearmament.

"Hey, I'm sorry some of your comrades didn't make it." You say apologetically. to the yeomen.

"It's out duty to die for our lord." The lead yeoman says with a bit of resignation. "But what you did today... no knight would have ever stepped between us and the enemy, and for that, we are grateful."

With that the yeomen trot off on their ultralights, no doubt to link up with their original unit.

"Don't sweat about it, kid." Rock pats you on the shoulder as he lights a cigarette. "Casualties are inevitable in war. You did pretty good for your first command."

"Is that the truth, or are you just trying to make me feel better?" You ask.

"Well..." Rock pauses and then smiles. "A little of both. See ya in the morning, kid."

As Rock saunters off, Tarin approaches, wiping some sweat off her forehead.

"I think he's got the right idea." Tarin says flatly. "Let's get some rest. We're going to need it."

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure we do." You look up at the now seized castle atop the hill, and it strikes you. From this point forward, you will be fighting on Reikland soil. Their own turf.

You wonder what horrors await ahead.

Final numbers haven't been counted yet, but the losses are pretty serious on both sides.

Then again, when both sides have expendable bullet sponges (zombies vs peasants), casualty rates tend to be a bit skewed.

I'm sorry, but the Ottomans were rather incompetent. Historically, in other wars, they took similar casualty rates. Hell, there's an incident in the Korean War where the now Turks just simply lost an entire battalion in a single day. And not in the same way that happened to so many American units, but good defensive positions, well tied in with the units on their flank. And they. Just. Disappeared.

>>42883425
Depends on the conflict. Generally, not high at all. A handful of casualties over the entire platoon. But in heavy engagements, like this one, they can be rather high. Even still, averages bring it down low.
>>
>>42883422
Nice thread Merc.
>>
>>42883474
The fact that they were incompetent does not obviate the fact that those casualty rates *actually happened*, which by there mere existence falsifies your prior assertions.

You aren't getting out of it that easily.
>>
>>42883509
They exist, but the incompetence of the one side is enough to qualify for "strange circumstances". In engagements between foes of technological and qualitative equivalence, they didn't really happen, outside of strange circumstances.

Now the two major Communist Offensives of the Korean War definitely could count, but I would label those as strange circumstances as well.
>>
>>42883459
So with the Yeoman returning will our reputation grow?

or will we get replacements?
>>
>>42883546
To add on to that, let me say this. In cases of a full on rout, casualties will always be massive. Said routs tend to happen with less trained troops.
>>
>>42883546
By that utterly fallacious logic you could justify *anything* as strange circumstances. Handwave away any point opposing your own.

*Now* who's begin intellectually dishonest, I wonder.
>>
>>42883443
3 Panther destroyed

3 Panthers Damaged

7 Lynxes destroyed

1 AT Battery

1 Platoon of Infantry

Vs

5 Yeoman Death.

Overall we did a lot more damanged to them then they did us.
>>
>>42883581
Fallacious logic? Show me a case where these casualty rates ensue from a single engagement between equivalent forces that didn't end in a rout, with no strange circumstances surrounding it, and I will cede the point. That is what we're dealing with here.

The two initial communist invasions, those being the initial attack by the North Koreans and then the Chinese entry to the war, caused full on routs. In the 1st case, the American troops that were there were undertrained, underequipped, unwilling to leave the roads, and caught completely off guard. And were routing. But even so, this one wasn't that bad. Casualty rates weren't all that high. Certainly not in the 40% area.

The Chinese were a different case. They caught the Americans with their pants down, out of position, and when they tried to run they often did it THROUGH Chinese troops that had infiltrated behind them. It was a full on rout, often being ambushed along the way. In the individual engagements, the Chinese picked apart forces that couldn't mutually support each other due to poor leading and unpreparedness. For that, blame MacArthur.

And no, Islandwana does not count. That is certainly a strange circumstance. Effectively a rout with nowhere to go. Nor is it between technological equals, but in that case it didn't particularly matter, did it?
>>
>>42883422
See ya next time, Merc
>>
>>42883701
There you go again, distorting the argument to sit your own preconceptions.

"Hurr durr it doesn't count if it was a rout!"
"Hurr durr i'll concede if you fulfill conditions that have nothing to do with the original argument!"

You sound like like a school child who screams "Nuh-uh!" whenever he's told he's wrong. You've got your head so far up your arse you're no longer even worth arguing with.
>>
>>42883699
That's quite impressive. And also considering the fact that the enemy commander was present, that was amazing. Although we did roll crits and used two rerolls.
>>
Thanks for running, Merc! This one was a lot of fun, and you kept the action moving. See you next week!
