Quest Start

“I-uh-I mean,” the girl with the messy black hair beside you stammers as she looks frantically back and forth at the two girls sitting across from you, “I didn’t see anything,”

Across from you, your friends Midori Mori and Keiko Sugimoto slide away from each other in shock at the suspicion of just what the other girl might have seen.

On your other side, a red haired young woman shakes her head with a sigh. Her name is Kairi Osaka, your best friend and your primary confidant amid everything that’s gone on lately. She adjusts the collar of her borrowed athletic sweat suit, her own clothes having been ruined in an abnormal bullying episode earlier in the day.

The other girl, who managed to be the cause of this sudden confusion, is your classmate Saori Umeki. Unlike the other girls here, she has no idea about the secrets that in part rule your life and are of present importance that you talk about with the others.

You sit between the two of them, your long pink hair done up in a tight and short braid you could probably knock someone unconscious with.

Your are Mikage Chiba, second year Highschool Student fifteen years old. Formerly you were the third woman to carry the mantle of the champion of love and justice known as Sailor Moon. It was your mother and older sister that came before you, your little sister carries on since you abandoned that title. Now you have taken to supporting your sister in secret under a number of guises.

Earlier, you bid farewell to your elder sister as she left for parts otherwise unreachable. Both she and your mother might as well be millions of miles away. During the goodbye festivities, you enjoyed the spirits carried by one of her friends. Perhaps to excess.

Coffee and time have helped sober you.

“G-good,” Keiko smiles worriedly, “because there was nothing to see,”

“Ah, anyway,” Umeki-san wilts under you friends scrutiny, “Mori-san, I didn’t get the chance to say so earlier, but-”

She pauses and stammers and focuses upon something as you slowly sip at your most recent coffee and sugary whip topped beverage and scrutinize the exchange.

Her hands tighten on the table and she bolts up and away in some kind of embarrassment.

As you watch the space where Saori Umeki sat be overtaken by the trail of wiping black hair in her wake, time slows. You know the uncertain frenetic need and confusion on her face, of someone who doesn’t know what to do or how to be around people. The overwhelming worry that defies reason and will. Panic.

Setting your coffee down hard and fast, perhaps chipping the cup in the process and spilling a touch of it, you rise up to chase after her. She had the advantage of being on the edge of the booth and has a lead on you by the time you rocket out after her to the surprise of your other three friends.

Shooting them a vague psionic message not to worry, you barrel after Umeki-san. Your feet are still slightly unsteady, though you are quite sober your balance isn’t quite perfect, not that it matters because even with this slight impediment you are far above the abilities of most others.

Her matchstick frame cuts through the crowd of the cafe area and floor of the arcade with certain ease, no penalty to her movements through the mass of afterschool humanity.

There is a certain instinct in you to quell her panic, not let her face those feelings alone. Today you would count this melancholic and socially withdrawn girl among your friends; and you are tired of her running away from the things that overwhelm her. Which is in no way a projection of your feelings as far as your own flight from things.

Probably, you think as she reaches the door.

You manage to get through the crowd as she presses against the door and begins to force the portal open. All the lights and sounds beeping and flashing behind you as you crouch and push off in a dive.

Soaring through the air, the door ahead is full and open, pushed aside by nervous hands as your target pitches forward through the portal.

Here is where you overtake her.

Your arms snap out wide and and lock around the girl, to her surprise, as you tuck and swing your legs through the wide door. Given what happened a few days ago you don’t want to be the cause of yet another pile of broken glass across the arcade floor. Spinning her in your grasp and tightening your grip, your feet plant firmly just outside the Crowne Arcade as she is again facing the way she had just run.

“W-what?” she frantically looks around only the catch the swishing edge of your pink hair and then stutters quietly and trembling in some fear, “C-Chiba-san? I won’t tell anyone about Midori and Keiko. Honest, not like anyone would believe me if I told,”

Her demure state in your suddenly compromising position, as you notice just where your arms cross and hands grasp along her undefined frame, seems to be the result of attention brought on by your sudden impressive acrobatics and body leverage. At least it’s shocked her out of pure panic and replaced it with pure embarrassment.

~I didn’t stop you because I’m trying to protect them,~ you explain, ~You said you wanted to be friends, right?~

“Y-yeah,” she struggles against you weakly and her normally sickly pale skin continues to deepen in scarlet hue.

People are watching you, your booth especially risen and turned to the spectacle at the mouth of the arcade venue. Staff and attendees alike are drawn from their games, work, and snacks to the hullabaloo so created and over in an instant.

Releasing the taller girl, you plant your hands on your hips and stare her down a moment before she actually turns to face you and your face softens a bit.

She’s a wreck of worry, so you’ll sooth that and address what you think is at the root of things. Midori, and her history with her, seems to be Umeki-san’s cause for near panic.

~You shouldn’t run away from whatever it is you wanted to tell Midori,~ you explain as a matter of certainty.

You ran from too many people to let someone else make that mistake when you can intervene. And intervene you have. Umeki-san nods and sheepishly heads back into the Crowne, before pausing on the precipice of the cafe area.

“T-t-to be clear, Chiba-san,” she stutters through her opening statement into her feigned haughty and superior tone, “I’m only doing this because I think you’ll tackle me again, I’m not bowing down to you in the hierarchy of the friendship dynamic,”

~Sure,~ you smirk at her and offer a placating gesture.

She makes her way back over to the booth, the three still there watching the two of you make your return. Because you won’t let her up and run again, you quietly offer her to get into the booth first allowing you to take the outer edge and leave her between you and Kairi in the center.

There will be no running away.

Sliding your coffee from in front of Umeki-san, you savor the whipped topping that has wilted into little more than a layer of creamy foam on top of your beverage as the shy girl steels herself.

“Mori-san,” her hands grip the edge of the table and her thumbs twitch reflexively.

“Yes, Umeki-san,” Midori seems a bit worried and apprehensive.

“About earlier,” she screws her eyes closed and slouches forward, “I forgive you for back then. I get it,”

A moment of quiet passes through the table.

“I got that from the hug,” Midori says uneasily as Keiko shoots her a curious and worried look.

“No,” the uncertain girl speaks quietly, “I mean I get it, I know,”

Midori picks up on something that escapes your attention, and nods quietly to the girl. An awkward moment passes between the lot of you, broken by Kairi interceding. Shortly some light conversation picks up between the five of you.

It occurs to you that though the girl doesn’t clearly remember her time as a monster, there might be something important she forgot to mention that could be of use. Having outed her former monster status to you earlier, you suggest she get in contact with Kairi’s mother if she thinks she recalls anything important.

After she leaves, you are left with your allies for matters of more importance. Also you were able to worm a verbal sampling of Umeki-san’s reading habits out of her, but you’ll think on that later.

>Talk about approaching PIT about possessing spiders at the school. Any specifics?
>Talk about your current spread of likely Knight Candidates. Your opinions?
>Talk about your planned undercover operation. Will you need a tail and backup?

You wrack your brain on where to take things next now that you’re more firmly in your right mind, and are met with only sparse and half ideas. Given what you’ve seen so far you might not have enough to go to PIT with to garner their support in dealing with your school’s spider infestation. The matter of your remaining Knights is nuanced and muddied by what you’ve encountered and done so far on that field.

And you absolutely don’t feel like concocting a plan for them to follow to stop you should you succumb to the darkness you have found irresistibly tasty.

A stray through catches you though.

~Hey, Keiko, didn’t you say you had a surprise for the group?~ you query at the memory that had slipped your mind until now.

She smiles and waves a passing server over so the lot of you can take are of your bills.

“Oh, It's an awesome surprise. Kairi, Midori-chan these are for the two of you,” she produces cards similar to the one she gave you to the two girls, except both sides are gold instead of gold and white.

After the matter of your bill is settled, she leads all of you back to the Karaoke Lounges again. Certain the way is clear, she excitedly tells you to swipe the reverse side of the card.

>>42881556

To Kari and Midori’s wonder, another portal appears. The four of you enter, revealing a white and gold room of similar layout to your little sister’s secret senshi base. There is a command computer with Karaoke equipment and some couches. The center of the room is padded floor, and there are racks on either wall with training weapons and gear. In fact you think there is some fold out equipment for exercise and training all over the room. More than that, instead of vanities, there are more utilitarian lockers. They are certainly stocked and can be used as vanities when opened, but you like the more action oriented feel of the room.

“We have a secret base!” Keiko cheers excitedly.

“Whoah,” Kairi observes in awe.

Midori stays silent, something else on her mind for certain, but she remains amazed by this place all the same.

Standing at the foot of the short steps into what is essentially your Secret Base and Karaoke Lounge, you can’t help but feel impressed. Of course since all the adults probably knew about what you were doing, they would arrange this for you if they had made similar arrangements for your little sister and her court of Sailor Guardians.

The gold and white color palette sets the room apart from your little sister’s mostly white room.

Kairi has excitedly gone down to the rack of training weapons alone one of the walls and pulls a fairly long black hard plastic sword and a short sword as well.

“Midori, this one’s about your speed, right?” your red haired knight and friend giddily tosses the black training weapon to the other girl.

It pulls the blonde knight from her distraction as she snatch’s the weapon out of the air and offers a roll of her eyes.

Kairi remains in the dark athletic clothes pilfered for her after possessed bullies cut her skirt and tore her school blouse, she falls into a fighting stance. Admittedly it appears more modern or military than something for proper sword fighting.

“Yeah, but I’m hardly dressed for this like you are right now,” Midori motions to her own current state of dress and intact school uniform.

Your red haired friend is engulfed in red light before she appears dressed in the red and shiny as Nephrite Knight.

“You can change just as quickly,” she smirks.

A sound of annoyed disgust parses through Midori’s lips as she strides forward and flourishes the short fake blade as she is engulfed in a discordant light, emerging in the trimmed black of Jadeite Knight to meet her fellow compatriot on the training mat in the center of the room.

“Five spaces for personal belongings,” Keiko explains, “I assume you will be selecting other knights to finish the set,”

Nodding at Keiko’s explanation, you move across the room and past the clashing knights before coming to a stop before the expansive and simple looking control console.

There are a few keyboards and touchpads on the console, the screen ahead lights up as you approach. Its simple and white and slowly fades into an overhead map of the city. Adjusting a trackball you pull back to a wider view.

Across the city are marks, citing the battles fought so far against this enemy and the location of magician’s lair where the corrupted clone was discovered.

~So, how’s managing all this information?~ you wonder aloud as you scroll through the catalog of battle data that is pulled up from each attack with the enemy shadows.

“Venus-chan’s cat,” Keiko says simply while striding up beside you, “He actually owns the Crowne, apparently,”

~Artemis owns the Crowne Arcade?~ you question curiously, ~Is that why Yeon wasn’t surprised by the portal?~

“More of less,” she responds, “So, what do you think?”

Kairi and Midori continue their fight behind you, stepping up in intensity.

~I think this will be a really useful resource,~ you say and narrow your eyes at the screen.

Well, you close the map on the display because there are important things to talk about with your team.

~However, Keiko, there are other resources that need to be gone over,~ you turn from the screen and regard the sight of Jadeite Knight and Nephrite Knight with blades locked and let your voice interrupt their fray, ~Knights, we need to discuss who will join your ranks,~

This draws their confrontation to a draw, as their uniforms fade when they turn to face you. Still holding their swords they regard you coolly.

“So, who our the potential recruits again?” Midori asks with sudden interest.

~Koito Kinno, Sasha, Saori Umeki, and Yoshi Sakurada,~ you explain as a series of chimes sound behind you on the console.

--Collecting Data-- a computerized voice calls from the speakers as the names you’ve listed appear on screen.

Turning away from that, you regard your team carefully.

“Right, you’d mentioned Umeki-san was a potential,” Midori grouses.

“I get along with her, do we know her affinity?” Kairi wonders while leaning on her sword before finishing her musings about your listed choices with a smirk, “I mean, she can be irritating and weird...though I’m more curious that Sakurada-san made the list,”

-If you could provide us with a relay to that, we can answer the first question,- Kunzite echoes in your mind.

~Ah, excellent,~

“What’s excellent,” Keiko asks.

-I’ll let them explain,- you telepathically connect to all three of them and allow the two remaining Shintennou to speak.

-While you were indisposed, we did take the initiative to check those who were nearby for their affinity,- Zoisite chides you as a glimpse of your inebriated antics play across your vision, -And both Koito Kino and Umeki Saori are compatible with me,-

-And the young Sasha has a compatibility with myself,- Kunzite says simply, -We’ve not had a chance to observe the Sakurada boy for his affinity yet,-

“I don’t know. Umeki-san not might take all of this,” Midori waves around to the room in general, “well. And she’s a bit of weird,”

“I think I could work well with her, she had a romanticized,” Kairi notes and then shudders, “notion thanks to heroic stories and might get enthusiastic to the magical life,”

“I’d call her out on being weak,” Midori sighs, “but she stood up to me today over some old stuff and...I can admit she has fire. She isn’t a fighter, not by far, but she has fire,”

She looks down and swallows her shame on something and speaks again.

“And she can take a hit,” she curses herself in a lull of depression.

~What she may know about the enemy from her time as a monster might be useful,~ you explain, ~And there is the chance that her exposure to the shadow taint might leave certain magical potential open within her,~

“Like what happened with you and the fangs?” Kairi asks, “Or Keiko waking up with magic powers?”

~Yeah,~ you explain tersely, ~Actually thanks to Hotaru-sensei we know what the enemy is using to make monsters,~

“Is it based on my father’s work?” Kairi asks in a sullen tone as Midori lays a hand on her shoulder in support.

~In part,~ you quiet, ~but, It’s the other part that’s causing those kind of strangeness. Though speaking of strangeness there is the matter of Yo- Sakurada-san,~

“You have history with Sakurada-san, right?” Keiko asks, teasingly, “That’s strange enough,”

~No, he was a power,~ you sigh.

“What kind of power does he have?” Kairi asks in curiosity.

~He can calm rampant negative emotions,~ you explain, ~I saw him use it,~

“He is a bit uptight,” Kairi notes, “I don’t know how he’d settle into the group, and we don’t know his affinity,”

“If there is romantic tension that won’t be a problem in this group,” Keiko muses, “I mean things are fine with me and Midori-chan,”

~Funny,~ you pout.

“He has a chip on his shoulder,” Kairi wonders, “And I honestly think after the whole ghost thing, he might want some distance,”

“How did that go, anyway?” Midori asks.

~It was his sister,~ you sigh, ~He met his sister, it was a bit weird,~

“So is the ghost thing resolved or exorcised or-” Midori asks with a trilling of fear in the back of her voice.

~No,~ you shrug as Midori shrinks back at just the idea of talking about ghosts, ~At least I don’t think so, she was still talking with Sasha last I saw,~

“Is he staying in Japan?” Keiko wonders as her eyes drift to the screen, when you turn you see that the four names you listed are now pictured across the wide aspect screen.

~For the year at least, he’s participating in an international tournament in a few weeks,~ you recite from memory, ~He enrolled for the term at Infinity Academy, that would benefit him as far as comings and goings are concerned. As for Koito,~

“He’ll be dedicated by the opportunity to help protect your sister,” Kairi muses, “And he’ll probably differ to both of us for most decisions, he still worships you as his hero,”

“Nothing for nothing, but even if he’s getting involved with Sailor Moon he still carries a torch for you, Kairi,” Midori muses and walks forward to the screen, “He’s young, he’ll be eager to prove his worth and that will be good and bad,”

~There is the family legacy to consider,~ you muse, ~His sister is Sailor Jupiter after their mother. He already knows about this world and about me,~

“We can’t trust he’d keep secret what he’s doing and who you are from Koyomi,” Kairi points out with a sigh, “And even if he does can you imagine how that would hurt your sister’s feelings?”

~I can,~ you grumble, ~Not like they won’t be hurt when it comes out that I’m doing this behind her back,~

“So, four candidates,” Keiko muses, “Two for Zoisite, one for Kunzite, and one unknown,”

She paces away from the screen and into the center of the room.

“Mikage Chiba,” she turns back to you poignantly, “You gave Midori a choice, I imagine you did the same to Kairi...who will you ask to do this? Who do you trust?”

~I want to find out who Sakurada-san has an affinity for, and against this enemy his ability to quiet harsh emotions may yet be useful,~ you sigh, ~And I owe him and Umeki-san some explanation about things. It doesn’t have to be the whole truth of things, but enough to make them think they aren’t crazy,~

“Well, we could see how Umeki-san and Sakurada-san handle themselves when the shit hits the fan with the spiders,” Midori muses.

“Whenever that happens, expect a quick PIT response,” Kairi explains, “Given local history of Senshi activity between the middle school and high school, and the attack on Keiko, they still have general surveillance keeping tabs on the school,”

“So, Princess,” Keiko wonders, “What do you want to do,”

We know he has the will.

There will be trouble, but that will happen whenever all this comes out anyway.

With the way this is going, we're probably going to give out Zoisite during the spider monster attack.
>>
You feel that both of them seem like strong candidates at this point, you hem and haw on it a moment until you realize that you can’t settle on it. At least, not yet.

~I’m not sure yet, let’s give it more time,~ you explain simply and sigh, ~Zoisite, please forgive me for being unable to make my decision yet,~

-Nothing to be forgiven, this is an important choice after all,- the phantom responds in your mind with an unseen smirk.

“So, guess you need to see who Sakurada has an affinity for next,” Midori muses, “Either he splits the choice on Zoisite further or it winds up being between him and Sasha for Kunzite,”

Kairi hides her mouth behind her hand to stifle a chuckle. Midori catches onto it and laughs a touch more openly. Keiko beams at you with a far too wide and amused grin.

“Who will it be, I wonder,” she snickers through the smile, “Sasha or Sakurada?”

~Can we just drop it,~ you grumble.

“Or, you know, it could still be Kairi,” Midori wonders aloud and glances back across the mat to the red head girl as she rolls her eyes but can’t do much to hide her own blush.

You pinch the bridge of your nose and sigh.

“What, don’t tell me I can’t egg you two on,” the blonde girl laughs, “Or are you so sure you’re into the exotic and the alien?”

“Midori, you can tease them later,” Keiko scolds, “We still have important things to talk about,”

“Hey, don’t tease me later,” Kairi blurts out and then reaches verbally after a few false starts, “I could just as easily tease the two of you about being so lovey duby that you got caught!”

Both girls blush under that reminder, Midori shakes herself out of it and resumes the matter at hand. Ever the pragmatic one.

“Alright alright, so,” she huffs, “What are we going to do about the spiders?”

“We could tip PIT off directly somehow,” Kairi muses, “Eclipse and the Knights are known elements. A tip from them would have merit,”

“It could put half the town in a quarantine,” Keiko sighs, “And drag this out. I still think I could figure out who's at the core of all this by talking to some friends in the fan club,”

“We could just carry on as normal,” Midori thinks to herself, “Actively bait them by having the two of you being publicly friendly with Keiko, see who gets the most upset or who they send after you,”

>I like Kairi’s plan, this might help draw out enemies inside of PIT
>Let’s see what Keiko can find out tomorrow from her fan club
>They’ll be gunning for us anyway, let’s do Midori’s plan and piss them off
>Any ideas of your own?

Baiting them could be good, but we gotta play it low-key with our strengths. It can't be a coincidence that the enemy picked someone obsessed with Keiko, not when they know who she is.
We need to find out who is behind it without tipping our hand..

[X]They'll be gunning for us anyway, let's do Midribs plan and piss them off.

this but maybe inform Naru about suspicions of a new monster focusing on Keiko.
>>
>>42897043
This could be a good time to suggest the Umeki dream dive, or are we just gonna go off on our own and consult Helios on that?
>>
>>42897267
Yeah, if we're doing the bait thing, having folk on standby could be good.
Though we should mention those security concerns as well, maybe discuss with Naru a way to have a response team on standby without tipping anyone off.

Writing, after I make sense of what I just watched.

I've just seen some shit, shit that doesn't make sense.

Okay, Writing for real now.

Thinking on it a moment, you come to a decision between the suggested counsel of your two Knights and the Sorcerous Sailor Guardian.

~They’ll be gunning for us anyway,~ you nod firmly and dread what it will mean, but you’ll tough it out, ~Let’s do Midori’s plan and piss them off. We’ll have to be careful not to tip our hand, and endure some abuse before they get overt...but I think baiting them into action is the way to go,~

“Alright,” Kairi nods firmly, “If it’s for the sake of the plan than I’ll take whatever those spiders can dish out,”

“I’m more than happy to regard the two of you as friends in public,” Keiko smiles warmly, “If it serves an important purpose than that’s a bonus,”

“Hmph,” Midori nods, “And while the three of you bait everyone else, I’ll hang back with my eyes open,”

~Then it’s a plan,~ you smile, ~From the walk to school to the start of homeroom. We’ll trap these spiders with their own web and force their hand. They’re ruled by negative emotions, so they won’t be able to resist their jealousy,~

“Still, we should probably clue the Sailor Senshi in once we know the target,” Keiko muses.

“Yeah, or have them come in if things take a turn for the worse,” Midori thinks to herself, “They may just drop the covert and operate overtly,”

~We’ll clue PIT in to keep their eyes open,~ you explain, ~They work with the Senshi now, so they might bring them in if things get obvious,~

“Alright,” Kairi nods and throws her hand forward.

“Tomorrow is psychological warfare,” Midori snickers and throws her hand on top of Kairi’s.

“And into their lair we’ll shine a brilliant light,” Keiko’s rests above even that.

The three turn their attention to you.

~And we’ll route their infestation,~ you slam your hand into the fray.

Together, with this plan, nothing will stop you.

The belated interlude will be coming later this afternoon. Got an appointment to keep this morn followed by some aggressive cleaning and inventory of to be packed belongings.

So. On a scale of aracnophobia to earth vs the spider, where is this arc going?
>>
>>42899532
I know that feeling well.

>>42904372
Clearly it will end with Eclipse fighting a building size spider after putting the rose lance through one of its legs and saying…

Does anyone have a good Tuxedoism for this situation? I’m drawing a blank.

It's gotta have something to do with jealousy, admiration, and bullying.
