Morning broke after the bombardment. The Neuroi had skirmished against your defenses every now and again, probing for weaknesses, trying to see if there was a way to flank around the side of the hills. But you haven’t allowed it. With Greta as the lynchpin of defense, and Rascal and Thorn serving as your more flexible elements, the hill has not fallen to the Neuroi. Sure, you might give ground occasionally, but you’ll be back to take it.

And so far, nothing. You peer through binoculars across at the Hive, now holding position. Apparently it has been stopped up by your stalwart defense. Like the Liberions of the Revolutionary War! You’ll make a Bunker Hill of this!

… you better not tell the others about how Bunker Hill ended.

“They seem to be holding position for now.” The tank commander poking out of his cupola scanned the horizon with you. You were sitting on top of his tank, for the better vantage point. “I don’t know why they are not attacking. This would be a golden opportunity if I were them.”

“1st Joint Tank Squadron is buying us some time,” you say. “Got over the radio with them just a little while ago. They’ve been poking and harassing the Hive’s outer elements since last night to keep the Hive from blowing it’s whole force on us. It has to decide which is more important, and I think…” You scratch your chin, tactically. “I think the Hive is being indecisive.”

“Interesting.” He nods to you, resting his binoculars on the turret top. “Well, looks like they bought us a lot of time. Are they going to come help us then?”

“Well, no.” You shrug. “The point is to stretch the Hive’s forces thin. Besides, they’re miles away, they’d have to fight through miles of Neuroi to get here. What we’re really waiting on is air support and Colonel Hessler’s reinforcement.” He nods at that, taking the cupola hatch, and then shutting it as he retreats into the tank. You hop off the tank and march through the snow. The Neuroi a few years back used to conform to a specific schedule of attack. They scrapped it in favor of surprise maneuvers but it seems like they have been falling back on that old model since the first Hive was destroyed way back when. Just another sign that this war was basically won.

You sigh happily, hugging yourself. “At least I got to be part of it!” you sing to yourself.

“Who are you talking to?” You stop in your tracks, and find Aurelia and poking her head out of a foxhole.

“Er… you.” Yeah! That’s it! You point to her. “At least I got to be part of it, Aurelia!”

She squints. “Um.” She looks around, trying to figure out what she said to make you say that. If you make a mistake, keep making the mistake until other people start thinking they’re wrong. That’s how logistics is done. “Alright.” She slowly retreats further into the foxhole. Some snow and dirt gets thrown up as she digs it in further for her Striker Unit.

Phew. That was close. People might start thinking you’re crazy. Everyone obviously takes pleasure from combat and the possibility of getting hurt, right? Right?

… right?

You drop down into the hole with Aurelia, pulling an entrenching tool from your backpack. “Need help?” She smiles, nodding as she returns to digging the hole. “I must say Aurelia, you and me haven’t really connected that much. How about you tell me about yourself?”

Aurelia looks at you weirdly, then shrugs. “Okay, well I work the 40M Nimrod SPAA. Erm…” She scratches her chin, then snaps her finger, grinning. “I like to hunt!”

“Oh. Do you? What kind of stuff do you hunt?”

“Well, back before the war, I used to go hunting with my father and his friends. We hunted things like ducks, deer, moose, badgers, rabbits, horses, pigs, foxes, wolves, birds, hawks, falcons, pumas, fish, er…” She struggles to name off something that she hasn’t hunted. Truth be told, that is quite the repertoire. You’re kind of scared now. “Oh, I hunted snakes too!”

Your tail rattles a little, nervously. “Really.”

She smiles, nodding happily. “Yep! Perhaps when we get leave, I can take you on a hunting trip, Sergeant! Of course, perhaps not in my home country since the Neuroi came but I hear the animals in the Liberion countryside are just beautiful!” She goes back to digging now, happily.

Snakes huh? You quickly pat your tail back, letting it disappear. You’ve got to control yourself when it comes to snakes. “So um. I guess you really like hunting then!”

“Oh yes.” She pauses a bit, tapping her chin with the bottom of her shovel. “… that and dancing. No girl who lives knows not how to dance, Sergeant.” What? “I mean, really, with my kind of stature? Of course I must learn the ways of the ballroom and how to move lightly on my feet. Otherwise I will fall!” She grins, happily, looking to you. “You know, Sergeant, I feel absolutely better now that I get to talk to you!”

Snakes… You nod gently, smiling as continue to shove your entrenching tool ineffectually at a buried stone. “Yeah, yeah.”

“Oh, you know what though!” She gasps, her smile growing wider. “Sergeant! I should show you the family castle back home. It has been in my family for generations. At least until the Neuroi came but perhaps we will liberate it one day! The old stone and timber are just…” She narrows her eyes, her smile fading a bit. “Your cheeks have gone white a little, are you okay?”

Your tail rattles again, out of fear. Goddang it familiar, quiet.

“Oh, it’s just the tail, you know how things are!” You turn around, and show off your rattlesnake tail shaking and rattling loudly like a maraca. “Er, could you take a look at it, see if it’s okay?” She nods, leaning over and taking a closer look. It starts shaking louder and louder as Aurelia gets closer.

“Hm.” Aurelia is quite curious as to why it shakes very loudly in her presence. “It doesn’t seem to like me.” She carefully pinches the rattle.

“Agh!” You feel a shock of pleasure run up your body, and you quickly flinch away from her. “Okay, okay! You don’t need to touch it! I gotta- I gotta go! Do something… something tactical!” You quickly leap for the foxhole wall and start climbing out. “Nice talking to you, Aurelia! Hehehe! Ahaha!” You quickly steal away, leaving a very confused Aurelia in the dust.

You grab your tail and pull it square to your face. “Stop rattling!” you scream. It immediately stops rattling, then slouches over, limp. “Good, that’s better.” You let go, and it immediately whips around and slaps you on the butt as it retracts. “Agh! You little!” Goddang familiars. “Agh!” You tug on your hair, blushing deeply. How did you embarrass yourself so quickly!?

You’re never going to live this down! You start marching away towards the center of the camp. Why does your tail have to be so loud and so opinionated!? Ugh! Nothing could make this worse! Maybe you’ll get lucky and the Neuroi will attack.

You slam right into Greta’s body armor, knocking flat on your back. “Huh!? Whosat?!” Greta wakes from her watch, looking around as she pops out of her armor like a turtle. “I’ll kill whoever woke me!” She looks down at you, then immediately takes that back. “Oh. Child! There you are! Ehehe… I wasn’t sleeping.”

As you stand up and dust yourself off, you get to thinking. Maybe being Sergeant isn’t all its cracked up to be. Well, might as well make the most of it. “Greta, how’s the watch?”

She salutes. “It goes good! Nothing to report!” She smiles happily, her head slowly leaning forward, then quickly standing erect. She’s dozing off. “And might I say, child, you are looking very lovely today!”

“You were sleeping weren’t you.”

“… nooooo.” She looks away. “I’m not asleep now, that counts, right?”

“If you want to go to sleep, Greta, at least tell someone to relieve you.” You sigh, placing your hands on your hips. “Do you want to go to sleep?” She nods sadly, a bit disappointed with herself. You’re not disappointed in her, she tried her best after all. So you might as well let her off easy this once. “Go get some sleep. I’ll take over this post for a bit.”

“Okay!” She stands up, hefting her cannon over her shoulder. “Thanks, child!” She pats your shoulder as she walks past. “I’ll make it short and be back in a bit.” You nod as you sit down on her crate. You don’t have as commanding a view as she did thanks to some height related issues. If you were in your Striker, things would be a bit easier. Oh well, might as well make yourself useful.

You pick up her binoculars and take a scan of the horizon. Just a few drones zooming from cover to cover here and there. Occasionally you may spot one of the bigger bastards poking its head above a divot in the wasteland. Perhaps the Neuroi are massing for another big attack tonight. This time perhaps bigger. You scratch at your chin a bit. Colonel Hessler is supposed to arrive by tonight, but you fear if the Neuroi attack before then you may not hold.

And that’s even before the air support comes.

You sigh. Why did such a simple assignment get conflated into something so important? You’d rather be knocking heads right now and upping your killcount. Heck, right now you’d love to just smash some Neuroi together and make stew out of their parts. You flush a little, thinking of it. The rush, the fighting, the thrill of combat was just enough to excite you between the thighs. You shudder, biting your lip. Yes…

“Oh, well, I sent Greta to bed, she was getting sleepy.” You purse your lips a little, thinking. “Um. Yeah. That’s basically it.”

“No, no. Take a break, by all means.” Rascal stretched her arms up, yawning as she returned to her trench for a nap. But that left Thorn, who stood over you as you sat on your crate. “Got something to say?”

Thorn shrugged. “Not really. Just wanted to see how you were doing. Last night was a bit crazy but I think you handled it pretty well.”

Thorn thinks you handled it well? You can feel yourself swelling with pride right about now. She thinks you handled your first day as a Sergeant pretty well! Ha! You smile brightly. “Oh, thanks, Thorn. That’s surprising, coming for you.”

“I’m not one to mince words.” She squats down next to you, looking you in the eye. “Now, I admit, I was a bit pissed you of all people got to be the squad leader instead of me. Considering I’m the most experienced out of everyone here. But I suppose maybe you might’ve been the right choice.” You happily grin. “But. That doesn’t mean I’m fully convinced.” Oh.

“So.” Your grin drops. “How do I convince you?”

“Well…” She rubs her chin, ponderous. “Tell you what. We’ll see what happens when the Neuroi attack again. Alright?” With a nod, she’s convinced. “Alright.” She stands up and then pats you on the head. “See ya around, Kid. Don’t work too hard.” And with that, she turns around and walks to her trench.

Not convinced huh? Hmph. You cross your arms. Well, to be frank, if you were her, you wouldn’t convince yourself either. You’re just here to fight after all. Getting to be Sergeant is just a bonus! Still, the idea that she isn’t fully confident in you. That is chilling in of itself. Does she really think of you as an idiot that just wandered in and usurped her rightful role? You hope not, you’ll crush her if she thinks that. You take up the binoculars and peer through them again.

Ooohh. Neuroi gathering up to the northwest. Looks like a huge gathering of drones, probably at least a hundred along with some salvaged tanks. They are gearing for an attack.

Ugh. But you just sent nearly everyone to sleep.

You continue to keep an eye on that grouping. If you were an Air Witch right now, you’d be blasting them all to bits. But you aren’t. And that fact eats at you like a bad itch. A really bad itch! Right now though, it seems like they aren’t attempting a formation or anything serious at the moment. Perhaps they’re just gathering. Good in the sense that the attack won’t be immediate. But bad in that the attack is probably waiting for concentration of mass, lots of Neuroi at one time.

And between the ten of you, five witches and five Tiger tanks, you’re really going to rack up your killcount right now.

You’ll give the girls at least an hour or two’s rest and then you’ll wake them up. You’ve got to keep alert otherwise the Neuroi will sneak up behind you and-

You slap your side, flinching. Damn itch.

Wait. You pull up your jacket and shirt to find a tiny Neuroi drone biting at your skin. That wasn’t bitterness eating away at your inner pride! That was literally a scout drone biting at your skin! “Aaahhh!” You scream, ripping it off and throwing it to the ground. It scurries across the ground. “You little bastard!” Your fangs and your tail pop out as the magic explodes out from you. “I’ll kill you!” The drone quickly buzzes through the snow, trying to escape. “Don’t run, you’ll only die tired!” You grab a plank off of the ground and pursue, screaming.

[1/2]

As you rush past one of the tanks, their crew pop out of their hatch. “What’s going on!?” yells the commander.

“Spy!” you yell. The little spy floats past their faces, and they immediately draw their MP40s and pistols to help you pursue it. To hell if you wake the girls! You’ve got to destroy this thing! It flies into a wall of tank crewmen, who immediately try to crush it or stomp on it with their feet. “Shoot it! Shoot it!” One very overeager crewman blasts at the snow around the bug with his MP40, sending everyone to the dirt for cover.

Wait! You got a bead on it! You sprint for it, rushing at it as it heads down a trench. Ha! You are already dead! You jump down and raise your plank.

Only to find it nestling on the pretty white trousers of Greta’s butt. She grumbles, slowly awakening. “Ugh… what is going on?”

You drop the plank. “Don’t move, Greta.” She grunts in confusion, squinting tiredly, still lying down and groaning in exhaustion. You drop down next to her then rub your hands together. The little drone thinks you won’t risk injuring your own teammate but well, guess what. You are at risk, little drone.

It skitters around on Greta’s buttcheek, staring up at you with those deep red eyes, as if daring you to crush him. You wouldn’t crush him and hurt your friend would you?

“Aaahhh!” You scream as you bring your open palm down and slam it against Greta’s butt. She screams as she jumps up in surprise.

“Ah! What!? What did I do!?” she shrieks. You push her down onto your lapand find the drone crushed but still functional. “Wait! Wait! What did I do!?” You slap it again, crushing it further, splitting it in half. Damn it! Still alive! You continue slapping and slapping, spanking Greta but crushing the little spy drone into oblivion. Sorry, Greta. But this is for the good of the free world!

Thorn, Rascal, and Aurelia run over. “What’s going on?” yells Thorn. She finds you smacking Greta’s butt furiously. “… oh.”

Finally, the drone is nothing but pieces, which collapse into the trench floor. Greta pants, squeaking as she goes limp on your lap. There is a very positive bruise beneath the white trousers she wears. “Th… wha…” She lowers her head down. “Waaaa…”

“Sorry, Greta. A drone landed on your butt, I had to destroy it,” you say.

“Huh?” She looks over at you. “Oh. Okay.”

“Are you alright?”

“Yeah,” she mutters. She goes limp again, her face completely red. “My butt kind of hurts but I am okay.”

“… you don’t seem alright.”

She sighs. “I am fine.”

> Center, defending Greta from flanking attacks.

You hop into a foxhole next to Greta and rack the bolt back for your Thompson. “Greta, northwest, lot of targets! Fire at will!” She nods, sliding a gunshield up and steadying her cannon on top of it. She begins taking sniping shots against the advancing Neuroi. One shot would penetrate, then it would blast into the ground and explode killing more. You hear the whistling shriek of Neuroi flyers, Butcherbirds. They smash the hill with suppressive laser fire, shaking the hill with explosions. “Aurelia!”

“Got it!” She spreads her legs and steadies herself as she begins taking accurate shots at the overhanging Neuroi flyers. One shot here, one shot there. You look over to see Rascal and Thorn shooting and shooting smaller spider drones trying to crawl into their trench. They’re having good success. Tiger tanks, they’re providing more supporting fire against the advancing horde.

However, there was a problem, and it was that you’re outnumbered. Sure, lots of people like to boast that numbers don’t win a battle, but in reality they totally do. Otherwise they wouldn’t even bother bringing so many in the first place.

You blink, quickly shooting up a flyer coming in from a strafing run on you. Your shots give it a lot of new breathing holes as it crashes and explodes into white mist. Another tries, and it meets the same fate from your same gun. You’d make a decent AA gunner! That’s already two kills! And already you’ve lost count of how many Neuroi you’ve killed!

That is slightly embarrassing, but still fun!

“Sergeant!” One of the tank commanders hail you over the radio. “We’ve got more Neuroi coming in from the southwest!” You turn your binocular around to see that indeed another large horde is moving up from that direction. Bigger spider tanks, salvaged equipment too. “We’re not going to hold here!”

“Retreat to fallback positions! We’ll hold here until you escape!”

“Copy!” The first Tiger starts rolling backwards, keeping its frontal armor faced towards the enemy as is standard. The next Tiger follows as well, firing its cannon at the enemy. Your job now is to cover their retreat. Oh, you should’ve packed some smoke grenades. Wait, you did pack smoke grenades but you left them behind because they were weighing you down! Damn it! Alright, alright.

“Look out!” you yell. Greta ducks down as another flyer tries for a strafing run. Too late for you, you duck down too. And it buzzes right overhead, shaking the snow beneath your feet. “Aurelia!”

“I’m working on it!” she yells. She pops out another flyer in the sky.

“We’re moving!” The third Tiger speeds away in full reverse further up the hill. The fourth Tiger as well follows suit. At this rate you’ll have all the Tigers up top the hill. Alone.

“Aurelia! Get up the hill now, defend those tanks with your life!” Aurelia pops out of her foxhole then speeds on up the hill with the Tiger tanks. She’s got enough initiative hopefully to make her own cover hopefully. Now all you need to do is hold out for the last Tiger tank. Rascal and Thorn continue their suppressive fire, pinning down most of the advance units. That left you and Greta to pick off stragglers and wannabe heroes

Finally the last Tiger reverses back towards fall back positions. “Alright!” you yell. “We’re going to fall back methodically! First Rascal, then Thorn, you two will cover me and Greta!”

The ground suddenly shakes as a gigantic ball of Neuroi metal rolls up the hill. It tears through the lines, knocking over or crushing any unfortunate drones in the way then stops right at the first trench. That is new. Very new. The ball hisses as it starts unfolding to reveal ten spider like leg that spike right into the ground and lift it up. The top screws open, then splits in half and folds over the top of the legs, revealing the turret of an M4A3E8 Sherman tank. The rest of the ball flares apart, revealing more and more portions of the original tank beneath, almost like a hanging flower.

“Oh my God!” yells Thorn. “What the hell is that!?”

“It’s a Sherman! God in Heaven, it’s a Sherman!” yells one of the Tiger tank commanders.
