PREVIOUSLY ON MAGICAL GIRL LIBERTY: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=Magical+Girl+Liberty

“Oh, when #5 informed me you would be busy, I was quite disappointed. I was looking forward to your physical, Lady Liberty!” Doctor Kalbfleischer is quite the bundle of energy when he’s not being a crazy ex-Nazi scientist responsible for a lot of morally questionable experiments. “But I suppose certain missions must come before one’s own healthiness. The girls say hi, by the way.”

You sit in your hired tramp Zeppelin, the “Spirit of Fire”. Normally it would be carrying cargo from the Philippines to the United States and vice versa, today it would be your ship to the mysterious island which was quite the ways away from New Zealand. The view outside of your cabin was blue, very blue. It’s sky, sea, and an occasional splotch of white from a cloud. You know for sure that the Spirit of Fire isn’t particularly a big ship, but it’s not like you’re trying to rob El Dorado or anything. You’re just after an Atlas.

“Tell them I said hi too, Doctor K,” you say over the phone.

“What?” Ugh, the reception from the wireless is terrible. Then again, you’re trying to contact New York from the Pacific Ocean. No wonder Operator #5 has been trying to invest in those Flying Wings of his, they’d make crosscountry comms much more bearable.

“Tell them I said hi too!” you yell.

“Oh, you want to say hi!?”

“No, tell them I-“ You slap your forehead. You’re not going to get dragged into this Abbott and Costello sketch. “Look, Doctor, I have to go.”

“You what!?”

“Bye.” Rude as it is, you slap the phone onto the stand. He’ll understand once you explain that Operator #5’s communications infrastructure isn’t perfect just yet. Hell, those robotic parrots he built for surveillance on Skull Island are already mothballed due to certain defects in their design. One of those defects was most damningly their short battery life. Shame really, those parrots were cute, if you got past the robot thing.

You lie in your bed. The cabin at least was roomy. You made sure to shell out cash for the luxurious rooms. The Captain of the Spirit of Fire, one Alexei Ivanovich Kozminsky and thankfully not a communist, was at least nice enough to offer the option. You knew how tramp pilots in this day and age worked, most of them probably would’ve asked for your body first and the money second. It’s as if the world was entering the second Golden Age of Piracy.

Hm, fighting pirates. Now that would be fun. Something like Treasure Island! Now all you need is a one-legged pirate to betray you for a batch of gold and you’re all set! Hehehe, your mom hated that book, which only made loving it that much more fun.

Okay though, back to business.

You cross over a catwalk over the cargobed. The inside of a cargo zep is not like a luxury liner some are used to. Things are much more skeletal, like the behind-the-curtain in a theatre house. It was dark, Spartan, and metal. The few lights hung from the gasbags were at least illuminating the place properly, but only to the barest minimum. You passed by gruff and gigantic airmen, carrying their tools and work orders for the day. The thing about Zeps these days is that they were built armored and with armament, to ward off pirates.

And one of those ways was through parasite planes. This Zep was armed with two Curtiss P-40s, painted dark red with white stripes and black trim along the wings to indicate no particular allegiance except to this Zeppelin. Rana was leaning along a railing, sketching them hanging from their flying trapeze mounts where they would be dropped and then could be reclaimed via overhead arrestor hook. “Hey, Rana.” Rana looks over, smiling. She was dressed for the task this time, wearing black shorts with some heavy brown socks, a white blouse with a brown vest, and a backpack full of many things that you might need.

One of these things was a sketchbook, where she was drawing. “Hey there, Christine!” She grins, pointing her thumb to the planes. “Liking these Hawks?”

“They’re okay, I guess.” Your hands find your hips, settling down on them. “Anything about them I should know?”

“They’re modded with superchargers, to help them pursue slow pirate aircraft,” she says. “Plus, check out the guns…” She absolutely quivers at the thought of the guns. “Ten .50 caliber machine guns!” … why does a P-40 need that many machine guns? “And, mounting for air-to-air rockets!” These things are built for defense. “And hardpoints underbelly for small bombs!” You need to have a talk with Kozminsky. He could take over Ethiopa with just these two planes. “Isn’t it so cool!?”

“I guess.” You purse your lips a bit. You suppose pirates are getting a bit better armed these days. “You know, Rana, ever think of becoming an engineer? You seem to have a mind for it.”

She nods. “Oh, definitely! Like uh… Jackie Cochran, or uh…” She pauses, unable to find the words. “Not Amelia Earhart, no one deserves fame for crashing. Um.” She scratches at her cheek, thinking. “Let me think.”

“Do you want to be an engineer or not?”

“Yeah!” She nods. “But, come on. You ever hear of women engineers? Psshaw!” She scoffs at the idea. “Nobody’s ever gonna respect a girl in that field!”

“You’d be surprised.” You wag your finger at her, scolding her gently. “Don’t put yourself down just because other girls can’t do it. Sometimes it just takes one.”

“I guess.” She shrugs. “But other than an engineer. I’d really like to be one of those girls in the pin-up pictures!” She blushes deeply, giggling loudly. “Oooohaha! Just imagine me being ogled by all those men!”

Well… despite her youth. Rana does have the body for it. Let’s not encourage her though.

And as if on cue, Sumire arrives to save the day. “Hey, guys!” She drinks out of a can of beer, smiling. You quickly take the can and toss it over the railing. “… wow. Really?”

“We’re working, no drinks.”

She rolls her eyes. “Whatever. So, is there anything new we should worry about?”
>>

[3/3]

“Well, it’s not like the Magisch Korps comes out this far, right?” asks Rana.

“We have the Japs to worry about actually. They might be working with the Korps in exploring the ocean for the Atlas. At least we know where we’re going but if we lead them to the Island that’ll be lots of trouble for everybody involved.” Sumire and Rana nod, listening to you lecture.

“Oh yeah.” Sumire snaps her finger. “The big Russian guy wanted to see you.” Kozminsky? “He wanted to know what the deal was with the cat sitting on his bridge.” Oh. Kirby. Well, you didn’t tell Kozminsky about um… all of what you three and Kirby are. It didn’t come up.

“I’ll tell him the truth.” Sumire and Rana quirk their brows at such a bold statement. “It’s his ship, the Captain should know everything. And I am sure that once I explain it a concise and simple manner, he will understand.”

“Let me get it straight. You are magic girls.” The incredibly tall, large, and husky Kozminsky towers over you, Kirby, Sumire, and Rana. “You do things with magic. You fight fascists in Berlin and Japanese pizdah, da?” You nod. “And kitty cat is magic too, give you powers and assists you, da?” You nod again. “You are looking for Atlas, and if not found Nazis will find, da?” You nod again. This is becoming a bit routine.

Sumire folds her arms, grumbling. “Where are we going with this?”

Kozminsky holds up a finger. “One more. You say you work for big agency, but will not name which.” You nod at that. You’re not going to put honor above security. “I see.”

You sigh, smiling up at him. The bridge crew all look at you with varying amounts of shock, confusion, and skepticism. Kozminsky tips up his cap, rubbing at his greasy hair. “So. What do you think?” you ask.

He pulls a bottle of vodka off of his belt and peers at how much is left. “I am sure I did not drink single drop this morning.” He doesn’t believe you. Figures. “Funny story, little one!” He pats your head, grinning with those yellow teeth and letting his vodka stained breath stand your hair on end. “But you are not getting out of paying me with fairy tales.”

Kirby nods. “She is telling the truth.” The bridge crew all immediately gasp, gossiping and whispering to each other in Russian. Kozminsky looks down at him, and watches as Kirby hops up onto your shoulder, then floats up to eye level with the tall Russian. One of the bridge crew immediately faints from shock. “We are wielders of magic, and our mission is very clear. We only tell you this now because Liberty has deemed it necessary. This is your ship, and you are the Captain. You deserve to know.”

Kozminsky looks at his bottle again. “Maybe I am drunk,” he mutters.

“You’re not drunk!” shouts Sumire. “We are magic! Accept it! Move on!”

“Ah, shut up, little gavnoyed!” Kozminsky grumbles to himself in Russian. “Fine, you are magic! But this changes nothing!” He stomps his foot, causing the crew to flinch. “First off, I am to be paid extra!”

“We’re not paying you extra,” you say.

“… fine.” He shakes his head, then points his finger to you in particular. “But when we get to the island, we talk!”

“Kapitan!” The radar spotter calls out to you all. “We have spotted a large ship bearing south from the north! It has some sort of flat top! It is being escorted by a pair of escort Zeps!” Flat top? You and Captain Kozminsky quickly head down to the windows and look north.

Oh no.

> Escorted by Zeppelin gunships <

Kozminsky grumbles, rubbing his face. “This is what I get for accepting money from little girls!”

“What do you want us to do, Kapitan!?” It’s clear that this Zep isn’t equipped to handle an entire armament of planes and a pair of Zep gunships. As heavily armed as the two P-40s in the hangar are, it would take some ace pilots to guide the ship out of this one. Captain Kozminsky rubs at his beard, groaning, growling, muttering incoherently as he paces the deck.

“They’re not going to attack random Zeps are they?” asks Rana.

“It’s Imperial Japan. They’ll attack anything if they think they can get away with it,” grumbles Sumire. That much is true.

“Captain. If you’re not going to do anything, I will.” You point to one of the crewmen. “Warm up the planes.”

“Hey! This is my ship!” He points to the same very beleaguered crewman. “Warm up planes!” He nods, running out of the bridge. “You realize attacking a Japanese carrier is one thing, but it is backed up by pair of gunships too, those things are not jokes!”

“I’m aware.” You fold your arms, then look out to the Kaga. On either side of it are the gunships, half the size of the Spirit of Fire, but possessing a lot of anti-aircraft firepower alone. Getting caught in their crossfire is going to be a nightmare. But if you get close enough, you might be able to make yourself a window of safety. Getting in between the carrier and the gunships might allow you a cushion where they won’t risk friendly fire on each other.

“Kapitan! The planes are ready for use!” yells one of the crewmen. “Shall I call up the pilots?”

“No. I will handle myself.” He tugs on his jacket, growling. You follow him out, along with the others. “You are pilot?”

“Not really.” You shrug. “I can fly, landing is another thing.”

“Good, you will not need that as parasite pilot,” he says. He quickly pulls on a pair of goggles and a pilot’s helmet. “Jap planes very maneuverable, but no speed so dive and attack then run away. Simple tactics, done it many times.”

“You seem to know what you’re doing,” you say.

He shrugs. “I have experience.” He hurls himself into the cockpit of one of the P-40s. You look over at your own, hm…

Kirby floats up next to you. “I am available for one enchantment on your plane, provided you want it.”

“Shields, gimme.”

Kirby nods, flying right into the plane, and them smashing right into the hull. His form completely over takes it for a moment, then the plane’s old red paintjob is replaced by a glowing blue hexagonal coat. The glow slowly fades, but never loses its luster completely as the plane is now given much more sturdiness and defense against the Japanese armament. Perfect for Zep rushing. You climb inside. “Wait!” Rana leans over the railing. “I thought you couldn’t fly!”

“At this point, I don’t know if I can fly either!” you say. “But I like to think I’ve got enough experience!” Rana and Sumire glance at each other, then back at you. “Stay on the Zep! If something happens, complete the mission!” Sumire gives you a thumbs up, winking. “Kirby, can you hear me?” You tap on one of the dials.

His eyes appear on one of the spare dials. “I am here when you need me.” You pull on a headset then tap on the boom mic. “Are you ready?”

“Ready. Captain?”

“All set!” yells Kozminsky. “We work together on this! Our aim is not to sink that carrier, it should be to disable so we can escape!” Good plan. You signal for the mount operator to let go. You watch as the hangar doors open beneath you, letting the sight of the deep blue ocean motivate you to do your best to not crash. Oh, if your mom could see you now. Well, your mom technically knows you do this stuff already, but if she knew, well.

Kozminsky’s plane is first. He drops down, taking into an aileron spin briefly, then leveling out towards the carrier. Your plane shakes and rumbles as it is let free from the mount. Start engine, then glide into level flight. Easy! You should be a parasite pilot! Your plane starts speeding up, and the shielding flashes briefly over your cockpit.

“The Japs are deploying fighters now!” he yells. You watch as the naval carrier planes start launching from the Kaga. At least a dozen of them. You gingerly grip the stick and feel for the controls. Those are the guns, those are the flaps, those are the rockets. Okay, you think you have a feel for the controls now. “We split off, our armor should shrug off their rounds for a little bit but we need cover each other!” Fair enough, fair enough. “You have ten fifties, six flak rockets, and a trout!” Ten machine guns, six rockets, and a mini-torpedo. Alright. But which targets though?

“I’m hitting the carrier, cover me, Kozminsky.”

“Da!” His plane charges right through the advancing wall of Jap planes. They immediately break off and start pursuit. That gives you a hole to exploit. You dive low and build up some speed.

“What is your plan?” asks Kirby.

“Tear up the flight deck, disable the Kaga, stuff like that. A mini torp isn’t going to do a whole lot, but it might buy us some time,” you say. You hit the release switch. You hear a loud metallic snap then a splooshing noise as your torp raises race ahead of you. It blows a hole right through the front of the Kaga, not big enough to cause serious damage, but enough to stop it from moving. Suddenly, black smoke starts exploding around you. Your shield flickers as shrapnel impacts the plane.

Here we go. You rise up and level yourself down towards the flight deck. Just in time to see another plane try to launch. Not today, buddy. You deploy a pair of flak rockets, smashing the fighter to pieces. Another pair is fired off, exploding deep chunks into the carrier flight deck. Yes! That’ll stop some reinforcements!

“Look out!” yells Kozminsky. What? You look up to see one of the Jap planes diving on you. Its guns fire, plinking and splattering off the shield. It immediately flies right into the flight deck behind you. Well, that solved itself. “Nice work! But there are still planes in the air! And you got two of them on you!”

Oh great. You look back to see a pair of fighters on your back. The P-40 wasn’t that maneuverable from the start, and with all of these mods and at this altitude well…

“Alright. This is gonna be a bit of a risk! Hold off your group for a little longer, I’m going to take these two for a ride!” You swoop left, circling back towards the gunships. Around each gunship are strafing wires. Simply put, they were like big nets designs to catch fighters who try to strafe the Zep at too close an angle. The wires themselves are spaced very closely, but you think you might have a chance yourself. “Kirby, can we fit between those wires?”

“Yes. But I do not recommend it.” You’ll take that as a yes. You push on the throttle. The engine belches fires and flames as you speed towards the gunship on constant bearing. The two planes behind you try to speed up as well, hoping to catch you as they plink ineffectually at your shields from a distance. Good, good, you speed right between a pair of wires. One of the planes immediately shreds off its wing trying to catch you and spins into the sea. The other breaks off, pursuing from the outside.

“Ha!” you yell. “We got one!” You hear a very worrying metallic snap. “… what was that?”

“That was our tailfin being sheared in half,” says Kirby. What!? You lean up in your seat and lo and behold the tailfin is indeed in half, with the top flapping uselessly in the wind.

“I thought you said we could fit!” you yell.

“I also said I did not recommend it.”

“You!” You knock your head against the dashboard. Damn it. He’s got a point. You try the controls. Yaw control is shaky but you can make it work. You look back to see the last pursuer. “Alright, we’re going for another pass.” You roll left and wheel right through the wires again. This time, your pursuer tries to chase, only to knock himself right into the Zep gunship and explode. The fires spread across the gasbags quickly, sending the entire gunship erupting in flames. The strafing wires suddenly rise as the Zep dives. Your wing cuts right through a wire, and you exhale in relief.

“Haha!” Kozminsky flies past you, now free of any pursuers, he must have shot them all down. “Nice work, girl! Let us get back to the ship and…” He pauses. “Wait. Hold on, I see something out in the distance.” You peer through the cockpit glass, and see something fading into appearance. A pair of new Zeps. They are miles away, but they apparently have noticed what is going on.

With Swastikas on their sides. Magish Korps. “Who are they!?” yells Kozminsky.

Your radio suddenly screeches. Someone’s calling. “Hellooooooooooo!” It’s Knives. “Well, well, Captain Kozminsky! We finally found the most notorious smuggler in the Pacific Ocean!”

“… you’re a smuggler!?” you yell.

“… no?” Captain Kozminsky is totally a smuggler. Great. No wonder he has these planes.

“Who is that!? Her voice sounds familiar!” Great! She doesn’t recognize you.

> Run away!

NUTS TO THIS. “Captain, turn around, we gotta get out of here!”

“No need to tell me twice!” he yells. Your planes immediately pull an Immelmann turn, speeding back to your Zeppelin. But not before Knives realizes exactly who you are.

“Lady Liberty! Ha! I knew it! Deploy the fighters!” You look back to see more advanced planes dropping out of the two Zeppelins. The pusher prop interceptors, the Henschel Falcons. Ah great. Those things can definitely outrun you. But at least you got some distance and time on them. You might be able to make the rush into the Zeppelin.

“Captain, is your Zep armed?” you ask.

“No, cannons weigh too much. We have emergency boosters instead!” he yells. Emergency boosters? You watch as the engines unfold, revealing packs of rockets mounted onto them. Oh. Emergency boosters. Okay. “But we must mount the hooks before they deploy or the vibrations will shake us free!”

“Okay, okay! You first!” You’ve managed to approach the Spirit of Fire in due time, but with the Interceptors closing on you, there’s little time to waste. Kozminsky’s plane levels out underneath the Spirit of Fire as the flying trapeze mount drops out of the hangar. His arrestor hook flips up and soon, he’s caught. He’s quickly pulled up. This is one of those things that make people wary of airborne aircraft carriers. Once they’re deployed, they take forever to undeploy.

“Alright, you next!” yells Kozminsky.

“Kapitan! The intercepters have closed in!” One of the engines in a shower of flames as the interceptors zoom past, then start making a wide turn. One good thing about the Falcons, they can’t turn on a dime thankfully. “We just lost engine one! Engine power to 80% efficiency! If we keep losing nacelles, we won’t be able to escape!”

> Turn around and distract the interceptors.

> Hook on and hope the Zeppelin can make its escape before the interceptors can line up for another pass.

“Fire up the boosters, I’m coming in!”

Kozminsky is quick to yell, “Da! Yevginy! Fire them now!”

“But she’s not aboard!”

“Do it!”

The engines flash red, then fire off their rockets as the Zeppelin starts powering forward towards your destination. Oh, this is going to be close. You dive down and level off beneath the Zeppelin as it’s gaining speed. “We are gaining too much speed, Kapitan! She will never be able to hook up!”

“She will!” Kozminsky at least has faith. The trapeze mount is lowered. You switch up the arrestor hook, which flips up, but very worryingly shakes and sways in the breeze. “Careful, I will guide you win!” You slowly raise the nose up. “Steady! Steady! Up!” The arrestor meets the same level as the mount. “Okay! Throttle up carefully!”

“We are reaching 200 miles an hour!” The hook slowly slips into the mount. Your plane rocks and shakes as its raised up into the hangar. “The hook can’t take it sir!” You watch as a few bolts snap and fly right into the canopy. Okay, that’s not good, that’s not good.

“Get out, get out!” yells Kozminsky. You bust the canopy open and steady yourself. Kirby flies right out of the engine block, then leaps across the gap into Rana’s arms. Sumire holds out her hands.

“Jump!” You get a good grip, then leap forth. The plane snaps right off the mount and flies right out of the hangar. Sumire takes your hand and saves you a fall into the ocean. Ugh, she is never going to let you forget this. She grins as she pulls you up onto the railing. The Zeppelin rocks as it continues accelerating to unheard of speeds for an airship. “Ha! Saved your life!”

“Good, that saves me having to pay your bonus,” you say. Sumire’s grin drops immediately. The Zeppelin shakes hard, and you hear grinding metal and what sound like sparking flames. “What was that!?”

“We lost another engine!” yells Kozminsky. “Those interceptors are still pursuing!” The Zeppelin shakes again, and immediately Sumire falls right into your arms. She grins smugly, looking at you, and you quickly push her off. All of you head into the bridge. “Helmsman!”

The helmsman looks back from the wheel. “The interceptors are losing speed! But we’ve lost three of our nacelles, we’re operating at 50% efficiency!” Another shake.

“Make that 40%!” yells a crewman. “They’re picking our engines apart!”

“How fast are we going?” asks Rana.

“Well, if we had all of our engines…” Kozminsky groans as he steps forward to the window and looks at the mirrors. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear after all, and those interceptors are not giving up. “We could go up to 300 miles an hour. Not enough to outrun the interceptors but enough to outrun their motherships. And I do believe we have outran the motherships. It’s only-”

The ship rocks back and forth, and again Sumire immediately falls into your arms. She looks up at you. “Oh, pardon me.” You drop her, letting her fall to the floor. “Ow!” You look into the mirror with Kozminsky. The interceptors are barely dots in the distance, but they continue to pepper the engines with tracer fire.

… until they finally break off and away. Kozminsky roars with delight. “Uraa!” The crew cheers with him, clapping their hands and congratulating themselves on evading pursuit. “Haha!” Rana hugs Sumire tightly, grinning in appreciation. Sumire simply accepts it, grumbling. “We made it! How are the engines!?”

The silence is not good.

“We’ve lost half of our engines sir, and two of our remaining four are damaged. We’re barely drifting,” says one of the crewmen.

“We can coast the rest of the way to the island then,” says Kozminsky. He walks over to you, grinning. “Good work, girl. Never seen piloting like that before. Who taught you?”

[2/3]

[3/3]

You shrug, thinking of Jock. “Friend of mine.” Good old pilot that he is. “Good work, Captain.”

“Ah, thanks! But you owe me that plane. However, help yourself to what we have in storage, mostly booze for now.” He points to Rana. “You, you know how to work Zep engines?” She nods eagerly, grinning. “Good, come with me. We have to begin repairs” Rana squeals in delight as she carries Kirby with her to begin repairs.

That just left you and Sumire. “Nice flying out there, Cochran.” She punches your arm. “For once, you didn’t me!”

“I just couldn’t stand the thought of having to leave the mission to you, Sumire.” You place your hands on your hips, smirking as you stand outside of the bridge now. “Really, when I was out there, I was fully prepared to rush the Zeps, take down their engines, and let myself be sacrificed to Knives’ sinful and lustful hands. But then I realized, ‘wait, that means Sumire’s going to be in charge’. So I came back.”

She rolls her eyes, and then pinches your cheeks playfully. “Ah stop it you! You know you love me!”

You slap her hand away. “I would say I love you if it didn’t mean I’d be lynched at home when people found out,” you say. You and her giggle a little at that thought. “Come on, let’s get a meal in us. Hopefully we reach the island soon.” She smiles, following you to your quarters. A quick meal and a little relaxation time and you’re all set.

It is already the dark of night by the time you arrive at your destination. Most of the fires have been put out, and the fixable engines are currently still undergoing very hasty repairs. There’s only so much you can do with what you have aboard the ship. The Zeppelin is docked on a beach, and lowered down to allow a lift to send you onto the sands of the mysterious island. You, Sumire, Rana, and Kirby along with Captain Kozminsky and a small party of crewmen walk onto its sands. “Right, we will set up camp here,” says Captain Kozminsky. “I do not think we have long before the Nazis figure out which direction we go though.”

“We’ll have to make good use of the time we have then,” you say. “Do we have a map? Anything to explore the island with?”

“We still have our one P-40,” says Kozminsky. “But since we are already so low, and there are no runways, it may not be practical.”

[1/2]
>>

[2/2]

“Yeah. We’ll have to hoof it.” Thinking on it, maybe bringing an autogyro or something to recon the area would’ve been a good idea. Oh well, hindsight is a bastard.

“So what do we do then?” asks Sumire. “Exploring at night is… kind of tricky you know.”

Cool. I wish Zeps had survived Hindenburg, they were awesome.
So I'm guessing that the procedure is match speed and heading, wait for mount, grab with hook, kill engines and get pulled inside? Because that's way more forgiving than a ground or sea-carrier landing. Even accounting for turbulence.

> “For once, you’re right. We’ll set up camp and then go in the morning.”

“You’re right for once, Sumire.” You sigh. As much as you hate to admit it, but Sumire does have a point. Exploring at night is probably really dangerous, especially in terrain that isn’t familiar to you. You’re going to have to err on the side of caution. “We’ll settle down in camp for now, Captain. If you don’t mind?”

“Not at all. We’ll get the tents up. Yevginy! Boris! Quickly!” He waves his crewmen down the ropes, bringing in the camping supplies.

Rana smiles. “I love camping!” She claps her hands together. “And the stars are so beautiful tonight!” You look up. Yeah. Honestly, you don’t get to see the stars like this in the cities. The starlight out in wild untamed nature is just gorgeous. Like a brilliant mosaic of light.

“Boring!” Of course Sumire has to ruin it. “Dibs on te big tent!”

“You and me are bunking in the small tent, Sumire.” She turns to you, incredulous. “Captain gets the big tent.”

“B-… but.” She blinks, pouting a bit. “Big tent.”

The crewmen quickly pitch a small tent, barely big enough for the two of you. “Hey,” you say. “That’s ours.” They nod, moving on to pitch the other tents. Sumire glares at you as if you just stepped on her sandcastle and kicked sand in her face. “Come on, it’s not going to kill you.”

She scoffs. “I don’t get paid enough to sleep in tents like that.”

You roll your eyes, dropping your backpack next to it. “You don’t get paid to complain. Now come help me start a fire.” She points her Soul Ring to a pile of logs next to the tent, and zaps out a bolt of lightning. A log is immediately ignited into flames. “Thanks.”

The four of you, yourself, Kirby, Sumire, and Rana sit around the campfire while the rest of the crew sit off by themselves. Fair enough, you had a hard day today anyway. Last you need are some desperate sailors trying to make it with little girls half their age. Rana smiles as she sways side to side, holding Kirby in her lap, who repeats her swaying motion. “So, how about we sing a song?”

“Like what?” asks Sumire.

“I dunno! Um…” She whistles out a tune. You think In the Mood by Glenn Miller. “No, that doesn’t have lyrics. Um. Do you know any campfire songs, Christine?”

You shrug. “Nah. I’ve mostly forgotten my time in the Girl Scouts.”

“aw.” Rana frowns a bit. She looks down at Kirby. “What about you?” Kirby shakes his head. “Darn.”

“We’re not very fun, are we?” asks Sumire.

“We can be fun, we just have different ways of being fun,” you state. “Like uh… Rana has her cars. Sumire, you’ve got money. And I’ve got baseball and fighting.”

Sumire grumbles. “I still don’t understand how that sport is popular.”

“You may never, which kills me inside.” Sumire rolls her eyes, leaning back on her rucksack and staring up into space. “Seriously, it’s really hard to figure out gift ideas for you, Sumire. Especially since you’ve bribed me with so many gifts lately like that Satchel Paige baseball and that swimsuit.”

She looks over, surprised. “You kept the swimsuit?”

“… no.” You shake your head. Sumire’s smug grin returns. Ugh. Rookie mistake. “… yes.”

She giggles a little. “Did you hear that, Rana?” Rana giggles with Sumire, clutching Kirby and nearly choking him as the two quietly gossip with each other. You feel the heat rush to your cheeks. Damn it, one slip of the tongue.

“I only kept it because you gave it to me,” you say. “Besides it could be a suitable distraction perhaps!” You smile wryly, trying to make them see your point of view. Though, if anything, if you try to fight Knives with nothing but that stringy thing on, you might actually induce a reaction of shock from her.

The reaction you get from Sumire and Rana though is not the one you want. “Haha!” Sumire slaps her knee, kicking her feet as she laughs outrageously. Rana continues giggling quietly, trying to stop herself but failing miserably. “Ha! You’re hilarious!” yells Sumire. “Agh, you’re killing me here, Libby! Please stop!”

“Guys, come on,” you say.

Sumire holds her hand over her mouth, choking a little. “Seriously, seriously. That’s just like you! Why do you think I bought it!?”

You huff. “Because I thought you cared. Clearly you don’t.”

“Hey, you can get all kinds of attention from boys, and maybe some girls with that thing on!” Sumire grins, winking at you. “Certainly got mine.”

“I don’t want your attention! You know I hate going to the beach!” You slap your hand into the sand. “I hate sitting on this beach right now even! It sucks!”

“Awww, let oneesama fix that for you with a big old hug!” Nope, not this time. You cross your arms, looking away. “Come on, don’t leave me hanging like this!” She holds out her arms, pouting at you.

Captain Kozminsky walks up to you. “Having fun are we?” The three of you quickly quieten down. “Hunter, can I talk to you quickly?” You nod, standing up. Anything to get away from this disloyal bunch. You walk with Kozminsky down the beach. “A couple of my men have come back from scouting the skies. They spotted some recon planes around the area.”

“Oh?” You tilt your head. “How far?”

“Twenty miles,” he says. “The Zeps are not far behind. They will definitely be here by morning.”

You cross your arms. “Let me guess, sabotage?”

“Well… we have a boat that can you take you that way. Your only problem is actually getting up into the Zeppelin.”

“We have ways.” You groan. You were hoping for a good night’s sleep honestly in a small tent with Sumire. But you suppose it can wait. “Though, I can only do it with one partner.”

Following up on my initial plan, Rana should also aim for the engines on the Zeps, Libby and Sumire should start wrecking the hangars, and then wreak havoc from there
>>
> Take Sumire

“I’ll take along the group, but Sumire will be my main girl on it.” Kozminsky nods. “We’ll infiltrate, destroy as much as we can on both the Zeps, then come back. We find the Atlas, make sure we can get home. Those Zeps are the only thing keeping us from a clean escape.”

“Very well,” says Kozminsky. “I’ll have a boat prepared. You move tonight.” You nod. Fair enough. You quickly take a jog back to the campfire to see Rana and Sumire discussing the finer points of you wearing a swimsuit.

“I just don’t understand how Libby can get so embarrassed at the beach,” says Sumire. “I mean, what’s up with that?”

“I think it’s because she tans easily,” says Rana.

“Yeah, but there’s nothing wrong with being tanned, I mean, Okinawa’s famous for it,” says Sumire.

“Guys. Enough chit chat. We got a mission.” They groan in despair. “Don’t give me that. You pull up your backpack and start unpacking a little something you hid away in case of emergencies. “Our job right now for tonight is to cripple the two Zeps that are coming after us, they’re closing on the island, we have to make sure they won’t be able to pursue us once we make off with the Atlas. That means disabling their engines. Rana, you’ll take the one, snipe their engines from afar. Me and Sumire will take the other one, we’ll disable the engines from the inside. We’ll do this simultaneously to achieve maximum effect. Got it?”

[1/2]

Sumire sighs. “I guess. What are you pulling out?”

“Oh… something from Anneliese.”

“She gave you a gift?” Sumire actually looks a little jealous for a minute. “What is it?”

“It’s not a gift. It’s a practical tool that I need in order to… fit in.” You head into the tent and quickly strip down. You hate it, you hate it, you hate it. But sometimes you have to put on the enemy’s colors to make him think you are his own. That’s why Anneliese gave you her old Nazi uniform, wasn’t like she would be wearing it anymore. Still a bit tight around the chest but you can work past that. You quickly pull out a pair of contacts as well, turning your normally pretty blue eyes into plain unassuming brown ones. Then you quickly blast a dash of magic on your hair, turning it from brown to blonde. You step out of the tent and then pull on the cap. “… what do you think?”

Rana and Sumire stare at you.

Sumire coughs, blushing a little. “Wow, Libby. You make a sexy Nazi.”

“Do not ever say that again.”

So how many old pulp stories do you have lying around? I've counted at least three references and that's the well known ones.
Also, would you be willing to do a post on just the world and the general system that you use? Because I want to see this world so bad - I need something hopeful and cheerful and wiling to say "Reality? Go fuck yourself." (I'm tired of my roommate demanding that I aid him in obsessive analysis of VtM Cam/Sab warfare models based on at minimum 150 years of historical economics and politics)
>>
>>42860107
1. I take a lot of inspiration from many sources, most of which I don't personally own but are very well read-upon. They include but are not limited to:

- Indiana Jones
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- Doc Savage
- King Kong
- Jules Verne and his Les Voyages Extraordinaires
- Crimson Skies
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
- Castle Wolfenstein
- Operator #5

And much much more.

2. I actually don't have too many notes on how the world works outside of these adventures on the basis that I can easily modify and add things I want into them without fear of making anything too inconsistent. Though I've been trying to make things a bit more consistent with how magic works and who the characters are.

As for the dice roll system, I use currently a 4d10 system where the goal is to match as numbers together as possible. For example if you roll two 1s, that would be a success. But no matches means failure. It's still a WIP though and I might scrap it in favor of just going full narrative.

Also if you're the same anon who complained about their friend not liking Knives, I'm so sorry but Knives is one of the most fun characters to write. She's so cray cray.
>>
>>42860223
I am that anon. And I agree with both you and her: Knives is creepy and disturbing. She's also an interesting character that introduces a sense of personal horror to Liberty's situations. What motivates her beyond "lol I'm Frau Major Crazy Bitch und VE ARE NAZIS!" is actually being shown, as well as everybody just raising eyebrows at her. Well, sorta shown.
I ought to see if anybody has been scanning the old pulps, see what I can grab - or just throw random world and plot ideas at you, apparently I'm good at according to my roommates.
With a matching roll system, I suggest lower dice - it's much easier with d6 or d8 than d10. d10 is gritty, in that there are plenty of setbacks and it takes lots of luck and plenty of tries to get past things overall. d6 is pretty heroic, some chance of failure, but you have less tradeoffs in your successes. d8 should be a fairly nice middle ground - higher degrees of success, more chances at them, but still enough failures and tradeoffs to make it a pulpy adventure.
Oh, have you been taking notes on what the characters are competent and incompetent at? Beyond just what impacts the plot, but also going into little details. I can see Sumire being partially illiterate, Rana not knowing most rules of etiquette, Chris getting impatient with slower thinking people, stuff like that.

I mostly store what characters are like in my head. Sumire for example is pretty stingy with money, Rana's a bit of a dork, and Christine is obviously a bit of a hardass but overall there's some more depth to them somewhere trying to get out.

Also Knives as a character is both fun and easy to write because anything she does can be done justifiably in character. She was actually originally written, along with her other three compatriots, as being much more reliant on the others in terms of personality. They'd all finish each other sentences, they'd do insane quadruplet things with each other, etc. I'm not entirely sure how Knives got to be where she is actually.

But as for the main trio, I do know what they are and are not good at. For example:

Christine
- Good at athletics, baseball, basketball, track, soccer, other stuff.
- Horrible at her academic ventures, as much as she hates to admit it. It's not that's she dumb, she just can't balance her life as a Magical Girl and a student properly.

Rana
- A total dork.
- But also very knowledgable about the technology of the day and very kind and nice to others.
- Still a dork

Sumire
- Loves money.
- I can actually see Sumire being somewhat illiterate, but she'd definitely never let the others know about it.
- Is very untrustworthy except in cases where money is involved.

Stuff like that.
>>
>>42860654
I understand characters going off in unexpected directions. I never expected two of mine to basically be drift compatible with no Jaeger (in any form) involved. But that happened and apparently it's genetic. And their dad is a bard in charge of a group of mad scientists. Nobody expected that one to happen.

If you want, I can also explain other stuff that I see in the main three (and Knives...)
Knives: Obviously a sadomasochist, probably sociopathic (yes, there is a technical and behavioural difference between psycho- and socio-pathic, and it's environmental). What really suggests a tragic backstory to me is the fact that she stated that Liberty punching her in the face means love. Just think about that - her idea of love involves physical violence. It's a very aggressive love - she must be doing things to show love. It's a violent love - blood, bruises, and broken bones are tokens of love. It's a lustful love - it's about the actions done to the body, not the person. A parent probably beat the other one severely (I would actually say the mother - a violent father tends to raise a passive daughter, not an active one).
How many people want her to inflict violence on them? None. So she's always, always being rejected. Her lust for Liberty is because she capture's Liberty, Liberty escapes, and then they beat eachother until Liberty comes out on top. So to Knives, these battles are sex. And Liberty is her dom after the switch fights. She's just angry that there is no gloating afterwards...

Ok, it's mostly Knives.
Chris: Raised by two smart people, she would get frustrated by people who just aren't as smart.
Rana: Not even middle class. Her social skills are lacking, except in cases where she's begging for something - homelessness does teach you tricks in regards to that.
Sumire: A ronin's honor. She knows that a ronin can be betrayed at any time - words are cheap to a lesser person in Imperial Japan. But money? Money is worth something to those people. [1/2]
>>
[2/2]>>42861184
Sumire: She doesn't give her word (as she would be expected to hold to it even if the other wouldn't) until the money is handed over. And even then, it's implicit that she can go elsewhere if the money indicates a higher degree of trust and/or need. So SSO basically needs to elevate her to Samurai status to really gain her loyalty.
>>
>>42861417
You're pretty much on point with what I had in mind for the characters. I never really gave thought to Knives' backstory actually, I don't even have a proper name for her beyond Knives or Major.
>>
>>42861472
Gerlinde Messerschmidt, Messerschmidt being derived from Messerschmied, or Cutler - Knife Maker. A family of knife makers. "I'm a knife, these blades made by my parents are mine." So she gets called Knives. But is it Messem (Knives), Dolch (Dagger), Kruez (Cross, also used to refer to daggers), or Schneide (Cutting edge)?
>>
>>42861685
I like the idea of Knives not having a name but you've given me a few ideas on the offchance I do need to name her so I thank you.
>>

No problem. I love random name generators, but when I saw Messerschmidt I thought it was perfect for her.
Although I was referring specifically to her nickname in German with the last bits. It's odd to have even the Colonel call her "Knives" in english, unless she was translating a German nickname into english.
>>
But I love Gerlinde as a name for her - literally means "soft spear".

I consider the name of Knives to be something of a nom de guerre. Everyone knows her by that name because, well, she kills people with Knives. And not like with just the same knife over and over again, she uses a wide variety of them. From bowie knives, to stilettos, to push daggers, and even using ballistic knives in place of silenced weaponry on stealth missions.

Knives is soft in some select areas. The tits for one thing.

I can see her revealing her name to Liberty as a sign of affection. While making Liberty grope those soft spears.
Also Knives doing scarification to give herself tattoos.

>Knives is soft in some select areas.
This requires further investigation. Hands-on and thorough.

Gotta go do some grocery shopping. I'll contact you somehow later on if you want to continue the discussion.

Knives actually heals wounds incredibly quickly. She's tried to draw a picture of Liberty on her arm, only for it to heal over with nary a scar. It would explain how someone so aggressively vicious could survive fighting Liberty for so long.

I'm always on that tumblr if you need me. I'll be headed to sleep soon. Otherwise, I'm on #ques/tg/enerals or in #QMC in the IRC.

Liberty's already had experience with it between arcs.

OH GODS I MUST KNOW

Well it wasn't exactly a very enjoyable Christmas Eve for Liberty so that's one thing.
