Stage 97: The Center is not the Heart, the Heart is not the Center.

Defeating the Stone dragonne Sakomu-sensei was possibly one of the scarier things you've done in your life, and you have done a lot of scary things. Tricking him into defending himself against a blow that probably would not have killed him when he has flying headfirst towards an impact which did kill him wouldn't have been possibly without Akari-niji-chan's assistance and skills. The distraction of having his balls smashed into his pelvis probably helped a lot.

There were costs. Akari is utterly spent, her Shen nearly exhausted after two Barrier Combat's in a day. Even after you granted her a title and shared your strength with her, she's somewhat delirious. Your left hand is badly injured, which is saying something considering it is supposedly indestructible. Even with the immortality granted by the flesh of a mermaid, it is healing very, very slowly. You're not going to be using that hand for anything, anytime soon.

More problematic was the damage done to Yama-no-Musume-no-Okurimono. While she undoubtedly saved your life, the steel casing surrounding her core was broken in one place. And while the piece-meal design of katanas isn't unusual or unknown to you, this doesn't seem to be a case of simple damage to one part of the blade. The 'core' of Okurimono-sama is some kind of brownish metal, and it has it's own incredibly sharp edge. Further, either Okurimono-sama is dead and this new kami that inhabits the core of the blade is something else, or Okurimono-sama changed with the revelation of the strange metal inside.

The biggest problem is what to do about Sakomu-sensei's death. He's not merely some member of Clan Ryo, but an elite of Clan Ryo. Specifically, he was Oba-san's shinobi. Killing him will leave a void in her power-base momentarily, but you think he was on his own this time, and chose to attack you without orders. It won't take long for anyone with half a brain to figure out what happened, especially with access to Clan Ryo resources; he was accompanying Kanako-san, the Water dragonette who decided fighting you is not worth her life; but he was doing so surreptitiously, and that means you might have some time before anyone realizes he's missing.

The kami inside Yama-no-Musume-no-Okurimono is awake and aware; your not quite sure what it may do. You're also not sure how it will react to you doing something other than dealing with it, but you're literally covered in gore. Some smashing headfirst into a tree at eighty miles an hour with next to you will do that.

[] Clean up first.
[] Make sure Akari is going to be all right after burning through most of her Shen.
[] Politely and respectfully address the kami in the sword, see I fit is still Okurimono-sama.
[] Peel the rest of the steel away from the inner blade.
[] Drop the Barrier and contact Yui-niji-chan, and get her on her way, if she isn't already.

[XXX] Politely and respectfully address the kami in the sword, see I fit is still Okurimono-sama.
[XX] Make sure Akari is going to be all right after burning through most of her Shen.
[X] Clean up first – er, third.

Getting a handle on things is going to take a little time, but a Barrier gives you plenty. On the other hand, Akari, despite the first aid, isn't looking to well. Still, an unpredictable – and potentially dangerous – kami is something you definitely don't want to upset without undue cause. Like, say, making sure your best friend remains breathing.

“Please excuse my rudeness; I was unaware that you were a part of this blade.” You're not exactly how to deal with a kami in this situation. This is normally Kiku-chan's job, not yours. Still, it can't hurt to be polite and deferential to any kami. “How should I address you, great spirit?”

The spirit appears before you; her face is like that of Okurimono-sama, but there all resemblance ends. She is dressed in a Chinese cheongsam, with the ideogram for 'damage' embroidered upon it. Her hair is pale, and her skin is somewhat dusky. Almost like a Ganguro girl, really; her shoes are stylish, rather than simple geta or sandals, while she is slender and delicate seeming. But the look in her eyes is calculating and very cold; appraising and judgmental.

“You can call me Buki-chan,” she declares with a smirk. Your lack of reaction to calling herself 'Weapon-chan' seems to amuse her even more. “Fine fine – I'm the invincible weapon of the present age. Or I will be, when you get rid of that shit all over me.”
>>
>>42850430
You're pretty certain that most kami don't normally speak like that. Or dress stylishly rather than formally.

“Thank you, Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki; I will take care of it as quickly as I can. Please allow me to take care of my friend.” You bow deeply over the sword you are still holding, and she nods appreciatively.

“Sure, she's a nice girl. She was worried when I was broken.” Akari's sorrow at the damage Okurimono....Buki-chan took was genuine. Though you do note she does refer to the blade as herself before she changed. So it IS Okurimono-sama, but transformed. You had an inkling that such things happened, but this is a little bit beyond your knowledge.

You gently set the blade to the side and move closer to Akari. “I'm all right aniki....just....really really tired.” You smile at her and use your clean hand to touch her forehead. Her pulse is steady, and you're keeping her from any internal bleeding issues (there are a couple, one of which is pretty significant), but she's still exhausted. She isn't utterly exhausted though – she should be unconscious now, but apparently being your personal servant comes with an advantage or two. You suspected as much with Yui, but now you have proof.

“You're not all right, but you'll be okay. When I drop the barrier we'll get your oni here right away and she can take care of you again.” Akari smiles wanly and forces herself to remain upright so that her ribs don't cause her more pain. “I'll wash everything down, but I think you'll need to stay there. Let's not jostle your ribs any more than necessary.” Your own have already healed, and you're pretty much completely well now....except for your left hand, which is still oozing dark blue ichor from the shattered knuckles and lengths of your fingers.
>>
>>42850430
Buki a great ass.
>>
>>42850456
Taking up the weapon, you call down a strong, cold rain, washing the blood and gore from your faces and bodies, as well as washing away the worst of the much from the tree and from near you and Akari. The kami ignores the rain, and kneels next to the half-pulverized body, looking at it curiously. You can see she's resisting the urge to play with it, which you're kind of thankful for. Akari tilts her head up and catches a mouthful of rain to rinse her mouth, and she spits it to the side, much to Buki-chan's amusement.

“Salt water. I'm too close to the ocean for anything else,” you explain and she shrugs, standing up and looking down at you. Studying the damaged portion of the blade, you can see the steel is more brittle than it should be. It's a wonder Wakaba didn't shatter it, but then again, she was a good swordswoman. “So this is just a shell....” Akari watches you with sleepy curiosity, while Buki-chan nods.

so am I, but this last day has probably been the hardest thing Akari's ever done, and its showing, just because they've made us proud so far doesn't mean we should get stupidly reckless and let them suffer as a result of getting cocky
>>
>>42850855
True, the attractiveness of our enemies is beyond our control though.
>>
>>42850855

True, but we really do our best to keep them safe. We're not really being reckless.

On the other hand, I can't help but wonder what would have happened if we had hit our opponent with our last move instead of dodging. I think we would have been injured a lot more, but Hakari would be better.

In any case, Akari and our weapon deserve something to commemorate this victory.
>>
[XXX] Ask Buki-chan what she was made for.
[XX] Politely explain you will consult your priestess for the proper rites rather than guessing.
[X] See if you can dismantle the weapon and free the inner blade that way.
[+] Check if she'd be willing to wait or not.

“Who made you like this. I mean....” You frown, trying to phrase the question as politely as possible. “Why were you designed in this manner?” It's a roundabout way of asking what she was made for, because the answer to the usual question of 'what were you made for' is obvious – to kill people with. But there's more to it than that for mortals, even immortal ones.

“My previous mistress had me crafted as a weapon that could be used to fight against those armed with oni-steel or named weapons without being a named weapon myself. She never had the opportunity to use me in that manner, and she didn't want others to know about the way I was made. It wasn't very traditional at all.” She seems very proud of that fact. “It's only because you got lost that I managed to wake up at all, otherwise I'd still be asleep for almost a hundred years.

As she explains herself, you study the weapon, seeing how the hilt is attached and checking the design. It's actually a fairly traditional looking design, except the ray-skin is artificial, the cord wrapping of the hilt is clearly rayon or some other nonstandard cord, and the tsuba is definitely mold-cast, rather than sand-cast and sanded down. You'd bet the pins are machined and fitted, not hammered. The tang does extend through the entire hilt, though, and it's very obvious the steel is held in place by machined fitting, not pins or welds.
>>
>>42851313
“To be perfectly honest, Buki-chan,” you say calmly as you politely ignore Akari's slightly delirious giggle (though you do glance at her to make sure she's all right), “I'm not entirely comfortable doing this on my own.” She frowns, but she's still listening. “My priestess is the one who usually deals with such matters, and I'd really like to consult her on the proper methods of doing this. That is, if you don't mind waiting, that's what I'd like to do.”

It looks like a fairly standard design, if totally modern. You have the tools to take apart most of the blade, which should, theoretically, allow you to remove the steel covering. Ironically, the man who taught you the proper care and feeding of swords is lying dead nearby.

“If you don't do it now, you're not going to be able to use me to fight with,” she points out, reminding you that she's a rather bloodthirsty weapon. Another hearkening back to Okurimono-sama.

“Right now I'm not in any `condition~ to fight. My niji-chan and I-” you ignore the dubious look she gives you and Akari, respectively. “-have really had our fill for today. If we get into another fight, we're going to have to run, or at worst, do something drastic ”

She runs a hand though her long hair. “Well, fine then, if that's what you have to do. But I'm really tired of playing second fiddle to that butterknife of yours!” She points at Omukade-sama, sheathed at your side.
>>
>>42851332
You can almost hear the sniff of disdain from the more traditional kami. Reminding her she used to be a youkai would be bad form , so you don't. This time. “Thank you for your understanding, Buki-sama,” you say, and bow over your folded hands while sitting. You would ignore the way it takes your broken and bruised ribs hurt, but they're all healed, so your instinctive wince never comes. She fades away and you breathe a sigh of relief.

Akari smiles wanly and you crawl over and hug her, drawing water out of her clothing, her hair, and the ground she's kneeling on. You are particularly careful of her ribs. “Sorry, niji-chan, I really didn't want to deal with all that, but it was kind of inevitable.” She shakes her head and embraces you gingerly. You give her a kiss, slow and warm upon the lips,, before helping her up carefully, using only your right arm. Akari doesn't ~say~ anything, but her eyes dart to your left hand just once. “Thank you Akari-niji-chan. I don't think I could have managed him without you. Really, I don't.”

“You would have found a way, aniki. The world can be as much of a weapon to you as anything else,” she murmurs, leaning heavily into your right side as you walk her away from the gore-soaked tree.

You can't really disagree with that. Actually, yes, you can.

[XXX] It was mutual effort and you know it, niji-chan.
[X] I'm not the one who kicked him into a tree, Akari!
[+] If I'd been alone, it would have gone much worse....

“Don't be ridiculous, niji-chan. It was working together that kept him from killing either of us, and trying to convince me otherwise is a waste of time. Besides, you're the one who actually kicked him into the tree. I probably would have broken my foot trying that.” You walk her down the hill, pushing the water out of the earth and off the grass in front of you; the last thing you'd need is her slipping, Stone dragonette or not. “If it had been anyone but you, it probably would have been pretty bad anyways.”

She doesn't say anything, but you can tell she's dubious.

“If I'd been by myself, I could have won, but only be doing something spectacularly stupid or by making sure I got him by letting him get me. I'm a lot better at the psychological warfare stuff, but you said it wouldn't be very effective against. What few tricks I learned in Hell weren't enough to pull me through. You, you pulled me through.” You kiss her and she smiles, blushing a little finally.

She glances back. “What about the body?”

“We're leaving it. Let them make of it what they will. I don't need him littering my Barriers, I have enough weird people hanging out in them.” Which reminds you, you have a Kaga sorceress you need to let go at some point. “There's no way to explain what happened without it coming back on us, so let them guess. There's plenty of stuff happening in the areas nearby that there will be doubt.”

You pause and sit her down at the edge of your Barrier, then dissolve it. The night-sounds return in full force, along with another voice. This one happens to be in your head.

(Aniki? Are you all right?) There isn't the sheer panic that would accompany Kiki's or Yuuhi's voices; Yui's a lot more calm than they are.

(We're alive, but both exhausted and injured. We'll wait for you here.) You have a very clear picture of where 'here' is after Akari's leaps, and Yui understands it perfectly when you 'show' it to her. (I hope you can carry us both, because at this point, neither one of us is in condition to do much more than sit.)

(I can, aniki. I'll be there in minutes. I told the others you're okay.) you get the impression she did not mention how messed up you are. 'Cause you're both kinda messed up. (Kiku-chan says we can't give you any more energy right now.)

(That's all right. You all did beautifully.) The sense of pride is strong, and well earned, in your opinion. She closes off the contact with a rush of love and contentment. You settle down next to Akari, and help her lay down in the grass.

“It was actually not all that bad a night, aniki,” she murmurs.

Needs more "it can't be helped"

I just realized Akari pancaked a Stone dragone.

In a Barrier.

Man, she's in for some muscle worship, next time we lewd

The important part is she pancaked him against a living tree. If he'd hit anything else it wouldn't have hurt him nearly that bad.

So trees are in for some, uh, foliage worship?

[XX] M'kay, crazy person.
[XX] I really need to discuss the meanings of words with you and Yui-chan, Akari.
[X] I would have preferred a little more boredom.
[+] Ah, you're being silly, there are better things, you know? Also trees got hurt.

“....I didn't think you had a concussion, but I'm not so certain now,” you reply matter-of-factly, which produces a slightly strained giggle from your best friend. “You and Yui-niji-chan really have to start reading dictionaries, or something, because I'm pretty sure the words you are using don't mean what you were saying.” She giggles again, a little breathlessly, and you turn over on your side, looking at her as you rest your head on your hand and place the other on her chest. Her breathing eases almost immediately as you further reduce the strain of her injuries in her body.

“I mean that we did a lot of good things for our family, and we have less to worry about than we did before. That's what we were trying to accomplish aniki, and we did very well.” You look at her seriously and nod slowly. “And I enjoyed our time together, tonight. It was wonderful.”

You can't help but smile at that. “Well, if it's Akari-niji-chan, it can't be helped, I suppose. But I prefer the lovemaking and the cuddling to the whole squishing people against trees, but that's just me.” She smiles, and starts to giggle but you slide your hand up to her chest, tracing a heart over her own heart, which calms her down. “A little more boredom next time, if you please. The excitement might have been a bit much tonight.”

“Hai aniki. I'll make sure our next assassinations go very quietly.”

“Well, that is rather the point behind an assassination, niji-chan. That whole meaning of words thing, you know?” She smiles up at you and you lean down, your hand over her heart, and kiss her slowly and deeply. The jade-horned dragonette sighs, and you feel her slip into sleep a moment later, too relaxed to stay awake any longer.

You look down at her soft, placid face, feeling the broken ribs and the damage to her kidney and her pancreas. Tearing mostly, but the pancreas would be bleeding heavily if you allowed it. As it is, she's going to be making red rain for a while at least. It's a sobering thought that she has broken ribs; they're like steel bars, and you would know because you've broken your hand on them when you were younger.

Keeping a strong hold of your power, you say some prayers to the forest you are in, apologizing for the damage you have caused, and pray that the seeds you've exposed to Amaterasu-Omikami grow strong and tall. Once that is done, you consider what kind of gift you'll get her for her new title. You meant to ask her, but you didn't really expect her to sleep.

It isn't long at all, though it feels like forever to you, that Yui's cloud settles to the ground and she hops off, kneeling next to Akari. “She's got broken ribs, and her kidney has been injured, but her pancreas is badly injured. Maybe torn. I'm keeping all her blood where it's supposed to be, but it's a lot harder with her than anyone else – I can't relax or she'll slip out of my power.” A kinder, more loving greeting would have been better, but honestly you need Yui's talent as a healer now.

“Hey, aniki, you can't go breaking my girlfriend like that, you know....” You can't help but smile at her soft spoken rebuke. “Man, I've never seen her bruised like this....” Yui undoes the torn leather vest and makes a soft whimper when she sees the extent of the bruises on her chest.

[] Hey, hey, focus niji-chan.
[] She'll survive, I promise, she's been through worse.
[] You should see what she did to the other guy.
[] Oh believe me, we both got it bad; he got it worse.
[] Next time I'll make sure we get backup.

Nevertheless, shoving this guy so hard he couldn't avoid being scrunched is a feat that deserves aknowledgement. Sexy acknowledgement.

Guys, remember about Ryukusa and promises

>I'm sorry for putting the two of you through this.

>Your girlfriend was amazing, Yui-niji-san.
>>
>>42853536

I forgot to add

>[] You should see what she did to the other guy.

>>42853536
If she DOESN'T survive, I don't think being stuck with a broken promise will really matter that much to me in comparison.

The consequences of breaking that promise would be insignificant to the fact that she'd be dead anyways.
>>

I was just saying that promising her this show how we have no doubt about it.

On the other hand, it's pretty horrible that she was hurt worse before.

[XX] You should see what she did to the other guy.
[XX] She'll survive, I promise, she's been through worse.
[X] Hey, hey, focus niji-chan.

“If you think this is bad, you're better off not seeing what she did to the person who hurt her, Yui-niji-chan. She won this one for us all.” Yui beams at you, taking heart in that Akari is not the one with the most injuries in this instance. “Mostly, she's just exhausted. She burned up almost all of her Shen tonight, and we've been nothing but moving and fighting almost all night.

You wait patiently for Yui to finish her examination, but she shakes her head. “I can't do anything here. We need to get home, or somewhere with a bed, aniki.” It isn't really a surprise, but you were hoping. “But I can help with this.” You don't bother hiding the relief you feel and Yui looks up at you, gratified by your worry for her lover and companion.

“She's been through worse, so I know she'll survive. The less she suffers, the better I feel though.” You carefully gather her into your arms and she blearily opens her eyes to look at you. “Go back to sleep. Yui-niji-chan and I will take care of you.” She wraps her arms limply around your shoulders and laces her fingers together before she slips into unconsciousness again.

“Is it normal to be that tired after Barrier Combat, aniki?” Yui's worry most likely stems from the fact she's never been past the third Tier herself. And of course the injuries. “I mean , I was tired....aniki!” She grabs your left wrist and you wince, but you maintain your hold on Akari.

“Never mind about that, Yui-niji-chan. Take us to our family. We can worry about it then. Keep your mind on your duty.”

“But-”

“Focus, Yui.”

“....haaaaaiiiiii!”

She summons a cloud and you step onto it carefully; it's bigger than the last one, which was artificially made larger through her power of the Void and a dose of potent alcohol. You smile, knowing Yui-chan will be especially pleased with her lover's promotion, and you concentrate on keeping you best friend safe and well, while Yui takes you to your family.

Thank you for reading and playing, and your patience with me. We continue next Wednesday, 9:00 am PST.

The smoke is gone, the effects linger a little while. I nearly pulled an Akari and passed out myself (low oxygen levels will do that.)

But the smoke is gone, and the air is cooling, so I should be back to normal in short order.

Question answered: Ryukusa is certain Akari will pull through; the injuries are problematic, but only life threatening if left untreated. Ryukusa has enough power to keep her safe for most of a day, though she has to concentrate.

I wonder if Japan itself has/is a kami, and goes from time to time "this shit's wack, yo". Because seriously, shit's wack, yo.
>>
>>42854585

Japan has an infinity of kami
>>
>>42854627
I think he meant if there's a kami representing the country itself.
>>
>>42854732

Yes, and it's all of them.

Of course, there is a kami for each island, but for the country itself is all of the kami that compose it.
