You decide to focus your training on defense. You learn how to mold your Impact chakra into a form that acts as a barrier, prohibiting passage through it. It's not made of material, so the duration is unfortunately short unless you keep pouring a ton of chakra into it, but it prevents most all attacks from passing though. You also learn how to cloak your body in Impact chakra, knocking back anyone that tries to hit you. This move also takes a lot of chakra and has a low duration, but it will likely improve with practice.

You also spend time with Tenten during these months. She teaches you basic sealing like she promised, and now your access to explosives is more limited by your budget than anything else.

Tenten, Ino, and Sakura have taken up basic medical ninjutsu training under Tsunade, who apparently leaves most of Itachi's treatment up to Shizune at this point.

One day, you are called into the Fifth's office along with Tenten and Shikamaru.

True. On the other hand, Konoha currently has a ludicrious amount of leverage over Yukigakure right now for a bunch of reasons, so they might as well use it for something productive.
said reasons being:
1. Their new damyo has excellent personal reasons to hate them due to their ninja recently kidnapping her and murdering her parents in a coup.
2. Their new Damyo also has excellent reasons to doubt their competence after the way their village elite got brushed aside by a group of Konoha ninja less than a year out of the academy.
3. Said Damyo also likes and trusts the Leaf Ninja, and will probably be inclined to send them missions anyway.
So basically, there in danger of going the way that Sand did pre-invasion, but probably much worse unless Konoha puts in a good word to Koyuki. Oh, and they probably need to find some new jutsu before the snow all melts. That's a thing.

...that's actually a really good idea. Especially if we're aiming to improve inter-village relations. We could switch up the teams every round, so they'd have to observe all the other teams and figure out how to use their abilities to their advantage, and balance keeping their team aware of how they can help with the fact that they'll probably have to fight in a few rounds.
In the field, you may find yourself working with people you've never met, people whose tactics and abilities will often be a complete unknown to you. This test will measure your ability to work with the unknown for mutual benefit, and the betterment of your village.

Shikamaru explains that he has the first test all set up, and mentions that you and Tenten are slotted to help proctor the other two exams.

"I'll help with the first exam, then." Temari says. "Tenten, you'll need Kankuro's help for the second. I believe there's actually already a Leaf Jonin on the way to the Sand that'll be there to help with the third."

"That means you two and I have to get going back to the Sand before the day's out if we want to make it in time." Kankuro says, pointing to you and Tenten. "So, let's relax for a few hours!"

"Well, they pretty much forced us into Jonin." Kankuro says. "Our manpower was down so much they had to give us emergency promotions to handle the workload. I have a brilliant idea, but it involves getting an even number of at least sixteen Genin.

Go down the list of names alphabetically, using a random number generator to join each person with someone else, creating two man teams for the third exam. With two caveats.

First off, the partner each person gets is NOT someone that they have registered into the exam with. Secondly, at the end of the tournament, the last pair will have to face off against eachother.

The first part is to determine the person's ability to not only cooperate with someone they've never met before, but strategize with them, learn their strengths and weaknesses, and trust them in the heat of battle. Of course, they will have a whole month to get to know their new friend. This also has the benefit of fostering relations between villages by creating more inter-village pairs than is statistically likely.

The second part is an acknowledgement of the fact that betrayal is a real thing in the ninja world, and the single hardest job that a ninja can get, the hardest thing they will ever have to do both literally and metaphorically, is fight someone that they once trusted with their life.

After waiting a bit longer, you and Anko see some figures approaching.

"There's no way." Anko says, squinting. "No one could have gotten here this fast."

The three figures approach the gate. It's a team from the Village Hidden in the Waterfall. The two guys are relatively unassuming with brown hair, but the girl in front is tanned with mint green hair and orange eyes. Her voice proves to be as loud as her appearance.

"Did we win?" she asks.

As the day drags on, eventually more teams arrive. Second to reach you is Lee's team. They apparently ran all the way here with no breaks, and they still look like they can go on. Your teammates and Shino arrive soon after, followed by several other teams you don't recognize. The last three to make it in time are Ino's team, likely courtesy of Choji. Ino is irritated, but Haku looks like he's having a good time regardless.
