Your team forms up beside you. Kichiro on your left, and Ai on your right. The Sand Genin come through the brush into the open clearing, and they don't look all too pleased with you. The puppet housing the girl looks the most ominous of all, and you're completely unsure of what sort of hidden weapons it could posses. Not to mention you've never heard of someone internally operating a puppet, either.

The largest of the group, standing just as tall as the puppet itself, is on the left. He's wearing a brown flak jacket with a pale yellow shirt underneath, as well as brown shorts and sandals. The second thing you notice about him, after his size, is that his skin appears to be rough and hard in certain areas. The tops of his forearms, his shins, his knuckles, and his forehead.

The rightmost member of the group seems to be a thin, somewhat effeminate male with medium length black hair tied in a bun. He's wearing a red jacket over a navy blue flak jacket, and brown pants and black boots. His headband is tied to his arm, and he appears to have various other bands wrapped around his legs and arms as well.

Ai is to your right. Kichiro to your left. What do you do?

Your squad looks at each other for a moment, the tension in the air keeping you suspended. You look back at your foes, who don't seem to be quite as nervous. In fact, from what you can tell, they appear totally confident. The puppet raises it's arm and points at Ai. "She scratched Sapien. I want to be the one to fight her."

The effeminate looking male steps forward. "Of course, Kagami. I suppose I'll take the larger one on the left. He looks slow."

Then the boy with rough skin starts to walk towards you. The skinny one speaks again. "Masutaro, they scratched your armor too, didn't they?"

The big one speaks. "That sort of thing doesn't really matter to me, Yasu. I just want their scroll so we can proceed to the finals."

Yasu shrugs. "If you say so. I hadn't pegged you to be the type to tolerate an insult like a kunai trap, though. I mean, what are these guys thinking?"

Kagami, inside of her puppet, Sapien, start to stride towards Ai. You look at your team, and Ai grumbles a suggestion.

"We should engage them on our terms. Pick an opponent that they wouldn't have picked themselves."

Yasu grins from across the clearing. "As if I'll let that strategy work! How can you expect to outmaneuver us when you don't even know our abilities? Why don't you try planning for THIS!"

The boy vanishes, kicking up leaves as he moves from your sight. You can hardly see a blur move directly across your vision, heading for Kichiro. The sound of wind rushes from your right, and there's a clash of metal.

You look over to see Ai and Yasu, kunai locked. They're standing in the center of the clearing, and the little girl looks up at the Sand Genin with a blank face. Yasu chuckles. "Tch, what's with that face? So calm. Fast enough to keep up with me like this, too.."

They disengage, and thundering footsteps draw your attention. Masutaro is heading straight for you, and you get the impression just one of his punches would be an experience that you could do without. Kichiro sprints in his way, and locks hands with the bigger boy, testing each other's strength.

At first, Kichiro's heels are pressed into the dirt, and his arms are visibly trembling. You wonder how strong Masutaro must be if he's capable of that. Nearby, Kagami laughs. "Don't you know better? Obviously Masutaro here would be stronger than you. Just look at him!"

Kichiro grits his teeth. "Quiet, bitch!"

Kagami gasps, her voice coming through with an electronic filter. The large puppet crosses it's arms in a girlish fashion, which looks odd. "You can crush him now, Masutaro."

Even though Kichiro is slowly being pushed to his knees, he laughs. "As if!"

You can see him grit his teeth, and start to groan fiercely. At first it simply looks as though he's struggling against the weight, but slowly, his skin starts to turn red. Sweat pours down his body, as he comes closer and closer to a crimson shade. He starts to stand up straight as his arms stop shaking, and the sweat on his body evaporates into steam. His muscles bulge and the veins on his head throb, and he slowly growls.

With a roar, Kichiro throws his arms up and launches the much larger boy into the air, shattering several branches. Kichiro's skin immediately turns to a pale white, and he drops to a knee, trying to catch a breath.

Kagami looks shocked. "What the hell was that!?"

Your friend grins, standing up with a slight wobble. "It's a Jutsu I created. I use my fire nature chakra to increase my strength, but it rapidly causes my body temperature to raise. Makes me pretty thirsty too, as much as I sweat, heh."

Masutaro crashes back into the earth, stunned. He slowly stands, and you notice that the rock armor on his body appears thicker. He's starting to look a little like an armadillo, in fact.

Kagami turns to you, and points a finger. You notice that she doesn't say anything, and you get the sensation that she's completely hostile. She raises her arm and points, and the tip of one of the puppet's fingers opens up. A single senbon connected to a wire fires at your head, and you deftly move to the left slightly to dodge it. Behind you it thuds against a tree, and a motor begins to whir on the puppet's shoulder. Something's going to happen. What do you do?

You use your chakra to quickly dash to the right about ten meters, and then leap into cover behind a cluster of trees. You crawl up it silently using your chakra to stay attached, and hide in the shadows of the trees above. Looking down you can see that the wire is covered in electricity, and Kagami is slowly reeling it back. She stops once it's close to her, and keeps it drawn.

The electric motor is whirring loudly. You were fast enough to escape for the moment. You're not sure how long you have until she spots you, so you'll have to act quickly. What's your plan?

Then Shunshin up before the smoke clears, move forwards above her position with another Shunshin, then do a third one downwards right onto her Kunai first with a tag at the ready. Even if she dodges the Kunai, we can hopefully slap the tag on her and retreat before she counters.

You take the small opportunity you have, and you formulate a plan of action. You form a handsign to create a single clone, a miniscule chakra cost considering your control. You send it down through the trees and dashing at Kagami, all the while preforming the seal again. The second clone leaps from your position.

Kagami flicks her wrist forward, and the electrified wire cuts through your illusionary clone. She turns upwards once she spots your clone, and pierces it with the needle. It thuds against the tree you're in, and you release the weapons you've gathered. First you toss a shuriken, and it curves through the air towards it's target. If it wasn't for your training in weapons, and your frequent use of weapons, you might not have made this shot. Your shuriken cuts into the motor, and it dies with a whimper, throwing up sparks. Your second attack, a kunai with an explosive tag, soars through the air to it's target and strikes the puppet's shoulder.

The tag fizzles, and explodes. The puppet is blasted back a dozen meters or more, and you can see broken wood fly off in different directions. You see the puppet stand, and the leftmost midsection and shoulder of the puppet is gone. You can see Kagami's torso and arm, as well as a streak of blood. You've successfully damaged her and disabled her weapon!

Suddenly, she drops control of her puppet's arms, and they hang loose to the side. You see her left arm raise up and begin to move rapidly, although you can't see the hands. You assume that she's forming seals.

Suddenly the chest of the puppet opens up completely, and she's inhaling deeply. She drops her handseals, her cheeks puffed out. She picks up the puppet's arms with strings and holds them out, and from the wrists, streams of fire burst forth. She exhales. "Great Breakthrough!"

In a rush, you draw three senbon and dip them in and out of the vial of poison. You focus the chakra in your feet and burst towards the flames, passing just over them in an arc in an effort to reach Kagami. The heat underneath of you singes your clothes and melts the soles of your shoes, but suddenly the blaze is gone in a flash. Below is a charred landscape.

You wouldn't have survived that. You think back to the desperation you felt during the fight against the Jashin Cultist leader. If you hesitate, if you don't take every opportunity that luck and planning gives you, then you or your friends will get hurt.

You stare down at the puppet. It's completely open. You throw your weapons with precision at her stomach, and it seems to be a clear shot.

She raises her puppet's arm at the last moment, deflecting two of them. A single poisoned senbon slips in, and she yanks it out, gasping. It was just below her wound from the explosion. She growls, the electronic voice of the puppet sounding somewhat distorted from damage. "Arrgh! I can't believe this! Yasu, Masutaro we need to get serious already!! These kids are more than we expected!"

Suddenly, a shadow emerges from the trees behind her. Kagami just hardly manages to catch it from the back of her eye, and she boosts into the air with chakra powered jets from her puppet. She begins to soar away. "There's too many! We need to regroup!"

He tilts it upwards and chugs the entire contents, and his skin returns to a normal color, just before burping. Apparently that jutsu he uses really does dehydrate him.

Shikadai chuckles. "You guys look like you've been put through the ringer already."

Shikadai turns his head, and looks out at the forest grimly. "That's just it. This is a contest to see who can last the longest. The first teams to become weakened will be the first ones to be targeted. Then once they're thinned out, there'll be more room in the forest to operate with."

Inojin nods. "That's right. Staying on the defensive seems to be the proper move for now. Conserve our energy.

Kichiro chuckles, and rubs the back of his head. "I guess I haven't been doing that too well. I got wounded, and Takeshi had to heal me. Not to mention tussling with that big guy took a lot of strength. I guess I'll have to relax a little bit."

I just wasted a lot of energy, I get the feeling he could have worn me down with his defenses. How did your fight go, Ai?"

She looks down to the charred forest floor. "He was fast. Just as fast as me, but even then..I get the feeling he wasn't barring his teeth the whole fight. We only engaged in taijutsu, I didn't have time to use any of my techniques. I believe he's not a foe to be underestimated."

Chocho crosses her arms. "A tough sounding team. What do you make of it, Shikadai?"

The Genin rubs his neck and sighs. "It sounds like a real pain. I'd have to say this is the most dangerous situation I've ever been in, in my life."

You nod in agreement.

You're a nice guy and all, but you're also tricky. Maybe this whole super average Genin thing has been a facade all along, and you're actually a mastermind who's been holding a sleeve full of aces this whole time. Or maybe you're just lucky. Either way, I think me and my squad will manage. I think yours will too. If we ended up in a situation where it was advantageous for you to take me out, well, I'm not so sure I'd feel safe with my back turned."

Shikadai grins. "Of course, you should feel the same way about us, too, at this moment."

His whole team laughs. Inojin interrupts. "We should really get going. Truthfully, we've got no problem helping out fellow Leaf shinobi. If either of us are ever in trouble, I'm sure we'll do the right thing."

You all agree, and say your goodbyes. It's not just you and your team, in the battle scarred area.

It's the afternoon. The sun will be setting in a few hours. Where do you want to go?

It's only after a few steps that you have to stop suddenly to avoid a slim dart passing in front of your face. It thuds into a nearby tree, and you look off to the woods from the source of the attack. It's dead silent all around, barring the gentle swaying of the trees.

The crunch of a twig behind you alerts you to your enemy's presence. He dashes at you with high speed. He's fast enough that you can still see him, but you know that he'd easily be able to outmanuever you in a race. You decide that the best option is to attempt to lead him into some of your traps, and slow him down as much as you can. If you can get him open, you might even have a hostage for yourself, since that seems to be what they're planning for you.

You take off with a dash into the woods, leaping over a group of tripwires. Your enemy gives chase, various thrown weapons flying overhead. You notice that it seems to primarily be darts of some sort, with the odd shuriken mixed in.

Hearing the wires snap, you look back. He seems to be wielding a blowgun in order to fire the darts with, but he uses it as a baton to bat away various weapons. He also draws the same tactical knife as before to deflect another trap.

It seems that he's fairly skilled with his weapons. What do you do?

You stomp on your heel and turn, glancing at your opponent. You throw several more shuriken to distract him, and while he's dodging to the left, you draw out your vial of poison. Tossing it to the other hand smoothly, you draw three senbon to coat. Your opponent draws his blowgun, and fires a series of darts at you. You have to roll and not spill your poison, holding the needles in your teeth. You use chakra to keep your grip as you preform cartwheel after cartwheel, juggling the vial until you land on your feet, and dip the weapons in. You turn and flick through several handseals, casting the False Place Jutsu. You preform an illusion to make it seem as if you've thrown your senbon already. You activate it, and he does in fact dive to the left.

You throw your weapons, and they soar to their target. They clink off of the metal of his tactical knife, as he somehow manages to block all three from a prone position. What sort of reflexes does this guy have?

Your enemy lays prone for a moment, watching you and tapping his ear with a finger. The microphone. "O, I need some info. The handseals this kid just used. Dog, Horse, Tiger. What's that combination generally used for? I didn't see an immediate effect."

He stands up slowly. "Right. Genjutsu. Thanks, O. No wonder I didn't hear the needles hit the foliage. They were illusions. At least, the first ones were. Not bad, kid."

So assuming we survive this arc, what do you guys want to work on for training?

You turn tail once more and sprint, making your way through the parts of the forest that you have rigged. You're running out of distance, however. If you go much further then you'll have passed all of your traps for the perimeter of the north gate. You leap over a branch and look back to see how your pursuer is doing.

He's wielding his tactical knife and slicing through branches that are in his way with clean strokes. He's moving faster than you are, but he's being forced to constantly duck and weave through flying weapons. You decide to throw down a smoke bomb while he's temporarily occupied in your traps, to obscure his vision.

You quickly pull out senbon with bells attached, to force him to pay attention to them. Maybe if he only reacts to the bells he'll be too busy without sight to dodge the traps.

The smoke billows high into the air and covers him, and you unleash your weapons.

Now you wait for the smoke to clear.

Okay, strategy talk. So, any ideas on how should we deal with Grass Snake here? He hasn't taken a hit yet because of his speed and reflexes. We don't know any of his moves yet, but we know he's skilled with weapons--not a surprise. His CODEC gives him and his team a major advantage--his team knows what we're capable of, but not our friends. Finally, he's gone and triggered all of our traps, so even if we take him out, we've still got two teammates to worry about. And since they were near the entrance, they're probably fresh.

He doesn't know about our false-sound jutsu. We can use that as our trump card. Either we do it quick and dirty, making a loud sound and then attacking while he's stunned by it, or we take it slow give him the "I need scissors! 61!" treatment--which I'm disappointed I didn't think of sooner. Ooh, that could work. Wait for his friends to show up, then tell him using false sound that they're fakes.
