You glower ineffectively as Ren bustles about her job.
Which, today, is ensuring that you, specifically, do not kill any adventurers in the course of throwing yourself into a dungeon.

There's also the supposed side effect of no adventurers trying to kill you, but you barely considered that a problem anyway.
You could've just punched them. They... probably wouldn't have died. Maybe.

Anyway, what you're saying is that you won't be grateful for all this.

You take a deep breath, leaning back onto your skull as you calm yourself.
You are grateful. Distantly, in any case.
You're just more than a bit stressed and you really need to blow off some steam, preferably by smashing something that won't have adventurers wearing spider pins or people talking about queens or just anything at all, really.

A nice, quiet dungeon run.

"- Lyra. Lyra? Hello?"
You turn and find a mildly harried looking Ren next to you.
"Yes?"
"Which dungeon were you planning on visiting?"
"... I hadn't actually decided, yes."
"That would be a good to place to start, then."
"Mhm."

>What would I need to get to make a run at the river dungeon?
>The other one is a field or something, isn't it? That one.

The water dungeon would need prep work. Air is slightly less optional for most of our friends.

Yes, that's right. We beat the dungeon and get a blessing from its patron.

But it frequently floods and sections are apparently constantly submerged. We'd need to do a load of prep work for that one. Scrolls or water breathing or gillyweed or something.

Else, y'know, all our friends could die. And that would be bad. We don't want that.

More like underwater this time around. But we likely wouldn't complete it unless we practice making a diving bell first. It was said to be completed less time (if not at all) due to its gimick, so one could assume it has choice loot, but that doesn't mean the end reward would be any better than the field dungeon anyways.

I say have a good time with our friends and get practice completing our first 'natural' dungeon, and we can try the other one if we ever come back to this town. With aquatic experience, preferably.

"One is a field, yes?"
"And the other is underwater."
"I will stick to the one where everyone can breathe, I think."
"Are you certain?"

You shrug.
"Underwater might be quieter, but I am not willing to spend the time to prepare."
"Mhm. Well, give me a few hours, and then you can head to the 'Plains of Hate and Gold'."

She laughs.

"It is most certainly wheat."

You sigh, banishing thoughts of crowns and other unfortunate nonsense.
"Have you been inside? What is it like?"
Ren's hands shuffle paper, searching something out while she speaks.

"A bit on the odd side. Sky, open plains, fields, all inside something. Sections are reached through portals, most portals have a guardian. If you're planning on staying long, bring rations and the like."
"I am planning on eating monsters, yes."

I'm deeply disappointed we didn't make new weapons and armour for the dungeon to test them out in there.
But I gouess that shows why Hearth would have been a retarded choice, we never do anything forging.
>>
>>42818681
I wanted hearth for weaponizing metal, not for building. If you can manipulate metal that easily you can turn someones steel plate armor to molten slag instantly, or disarm an enemy by turning his sword into a plowshare.
>>
>>42818681
Apart from all that time we spent practicing forging at the village and with the dwarves?

>>42818712
To be fair its a good chance we could do something simular if we practice enough.
>>
>>42818712
>you can turn someones steel plate armor to molten slag instantly, or disarm an enemy by turning his sword into a plowshare
Thats a thing we could already do before easily, actually. We just never did because if we get our hand on our opponent its over anyway.

>>42818727
All three times?
>>
>>42818681
Well, we need to get materials to craft with. And we have no money to buy them.

So we do the dungeon run, get the money, acquire the materials, make the bitching weaponry to use in the next dungeon. And that's leaving aside whatever sorts of rare materials we'll acquire in the form of loot from the monsters.

Do you not know how dungeons work?
>>
>>42818681
I think we need like magic metal to make a better weapon. Maybe we can loot something good in the dungeon.
>>
>>42818681
To be fair, we do have Tyrant Chitin Armour, as well as our original armor, now.
>>
>>42818712
>If you can manipulate metal that easily you can turn someones steel plate armor to molten slag instantly, or disarm an enemy by turning his sword into a plowshare.
If we can get our hands on our opponents armour, why would we not just punch through it, which we can already do?

>>42818751
>And we have no money to buy them.
We got a whole bunch of loot we could easily make into money.
>>
>>42818759
>To be fair, we do have Tyrant Chitin Armour, as well as our original armor, now.
But all our friends are not even nearly as well equipped, and our spear still gets distorted anytime we use it because it can't keep up with our strength.
>>
>>42818766
Yes, but there are more enjoyable ways to make money.
>>
>>42818744
Man its more times than we've gone dungeon diving.

I might as well becry our current choice because we've done more forging than dungeoneering. Stop making a mole hill into a mountain.
>>
>>42818802
Doesn't really change the fact that we go into a dungeon with poor equipment, despite the fact that we have a forging Blessing we could use to make better equipment. If we don't use good equipment for even dungeons, then what would we ever make it for?

I found this quest awhile ago, and just recently caught up.

You're doing God's work, REQM.
>>
>>42818834
We still need to prepare and buy supplies. We have time to craft better equipement.
>>
>>42818834
We don't have the equipment yet because fuck you I want to smash things in a dungeon.
>>
>>42818821
>I might as well becry our current choice because we've done more forging than dungeoneering.
I don't remember people crying for us to pick upo a dungeoneering focused evolution.

No idea why you get so defensive about it either.
>>
>>42818821
We didn't have more dungeons to delve into, while not forging was a choice we had.
And you're not really contradicting his point of forging being useless if we don't even use it for better equipment before going into the dungeon.
>>
>>42818869
Sure enough, I feel the same way. mHence why the Forge thing was useless, the players of this quest ar eobviously not really interested in spending time with preparation, so we should have just relied on using loot from the dungeon as equipment.
>>
>>42818856
This quest actually has four spin offs of it already, although ones dead and another has a QM who might or might not be actually dead.
>>
>>42818911
Except things from the dungeon likely won't fit us. So instead, why don't we take the loot from the dungeon and melt it down and make it into things that are much better because they fit us and our friends.
>>
>>42818944
>and melt it down
So destroy the artifacts to make inferior versions because it would destroy all the enchantments?
Thats even dumber.
>>
>>42818944
Actually, dungeons (at least real dungeons) are alive and possibly sentient, so who the hell knows whether or not it'll fit us.
>>
>>42818944
Pretty sure the magical properties of magic items won't survive being melted down. That seems pretty unlikely. And clearly mom found enough weapons she can use in dungeons.
>>
>>42818999
Here's a thought.

Suppose the dungeon dispenses loot on a 'equal value compared to threat' scale. If we go into a dungeon looking for materials, as opposed to actual equipment, we might be able to get more valuable raw materials than we would find since they would be cheaper than equipment that can be used on the spot.
>>
>>42818944
>Except things from the dungeon likely won't fit us.
I wouldn't be so sure, most of use still have a human torso at least, so most of the stuff we would want to use is as likely to fit us as any random adventurer.
>>
>>42818988
Should be plenty of enchanted stuff to pilfer. Just because a dungeon has interesting metals does not mean each is enchanted, or enchanted in a way worth fretting over.

So, I may have asked this before, but I can't recall, so I'll ask it again.

Is it just me, or is our ultimate secret weapon the ability to have a team of laughing girls whenever we want on demand?

>>42819054
We literally don't know how it will react to us, it might say fuck it and do this, or it might attempt to modify its loot to our practical usages. Alternatively it might just give us spider themed regular armor or absolutely nothing of use to us. Hell, it might even fully break.

>>
>>42819092
>Alternatively it might just give us spider themed regular armor or absolutely nothing of use to us. Hell, it might even fully break.
We can exclude all three these posibilities due to mom having delved dungeons.
>>
>>42819092
Well, until now we had luck with superior magic entities like gods. Maybe dungeons too.
>>
>>42819124
Enchantment depending. This world does not seem to be short of magic users, but rare and valuable metals? Plus there is no guarantee the cash we get will cover the weight in materials of the item we cash in.
I wonder why people are worrying about money anyway, Lyra is a spiderbut, she can as good as weave money.

>>42819150
Not really? Just stating, what ever we find, pretty good chance we are going to find enough suitable for raw materials.

Mate we're talking about processed items vs raw material, even if we don't sell at MRSP we should still turn up a profit and that's not counting possible enchantments and magical stones

>>
>>42819272
>Mate we're talking about processed items vs raw material
Doesn't mean the raw material is actually easily available, which can easily mean its more expensive. And it will even more likely be more expensive than the amount of raw material that went into making the object.
>>
>>42819315
>Doesn't mean the raw material is actually easily available, which can easily mean its more expensive. And it will even more likely be more expensive than the amount of raw material that went into making the object.
If the material is that rare the object will be worth more. You have to consider the risk factor in obtaining such object and the fact that people will want it if only to show off.

"What if I put them out-"
"They are made of elemental fire. Don't put them in your mouth."
"Okay."
The secretary heaves a sigh, eyeing you suspiciously.

"In any case-"
"Well, do you have any requests?"
"Pardon?"
"Requests? Quests. Things you could potentially need from the dungeon, that I could retrieve, yes."

"Monster cores, mostly. It's not so much a request as it is a standing bounty. And gods know how much treasure is down there. People will buy it."
"Spears, maybe? Spider sized?"
"The running theory is that the stuff you find in a dungeon is divinely constructed as it's found. No way of knowing but going."
You nod.

"Then, I only have two more questions, yes."
"I doubt that, but go ahead."
"Is there anything else in particular I should prepare? Supply-wise?"
"And the second?"
"I don't know where the dungeon is, yes."

Ren grins, shaking her head.

"You don't need torches or rope- I'd advise you just to bring some food anyway, in case they can't be eaten. If they turn back to magic or something. We don't actually know what happens to the bodies in the dungeon."
"People don't retrieve monster pieces?"
"Why would people want bits of dead things?"
"To make stuff out of?"
"Like what? A decorative blood coated arm?"
"Like weapons and armour, yes."

She shakes her head.
"People challenging the dungeon are usually the sort who've got gear better than that. I suppose there could've been some, but... I haven't heard of it, to be honest."
"I thought it would be common, yes."
"It probably is. I know, at least, that people make armour from scales and the like all the time."
"Alright. And the location?"

"A field of wheat at the edge of the city. The gate is right in the middle."
"How has anyone ever been confused about the name of the dungeon?"
"Greed does all sorts of things to people."

That's assuming the object is in demand. Even a well made sword won't sell if no one needs it. Maybe its just the control piece the dungeon uses for its generated monsters.

Of note: If the dungeon does gen as it goes according to the person entering, would it generate "Hero" Monsters for us to fight? Like a party of elves etc. Going to be interesting.

Don't be the first to eat the wierd magical artifacts. Instead go find a researcher your not particularly fond of, and ask them what would happen, and dump off a bunch. "Any last minute advice for a new dungeon-eer?"
"Don't get killed. Or eaten. Same thing, usually."
"Thank you."

You kind of want to be sarcastic, but you're busy now. Busy busy busy. There's a dungeon to deal with, but first-

"-And one of every meat."
"What does that mean?"
"Every kind of meat you have, I want one of."
"One serving? One dish?"
"One entire creature, yes."
"Uh. Right."

It is an excellent sort of meal, if a little expensive.

You pack up a small mountain of preserved meats, and a weird sort of bag that supposedly will keep plants fresh for Nin. Which is a good thing, because you aren't sure that dried plants are edible. Or contain any nutrients.

"How does it work, though?"
"Pretty sure it's just an ice stone in a bag?"
"That seems a bit simple, yes."
"Simple works."

_________________________________________________________

The gate is just how it was described, which is easy because it is a gate in a field of wheat. There is also a gate before the field of wheat, but that is the fence sort of gate, rather than the 'giant stone portal to an ominous dimension ruled over by some sort of god' gate.

The wheat reaches right to the steps- a circular platform that descends, row by row, to the dirt. Flickering runes line the stone arch that makes up the entrance to the dungeon, gleaming with the colour of a setting sun. They flare wildly as you approach, friends in tow, blazing to life as a shimmering void opens in the air, and you step through, into the unknown-

Well, vaguely unknown. You know what is inside in a general sense, but-
No, no, this is pointless. You are inside now, so you can just look. There.

...It's a field. It is definitely a field.
>>
>>42820680
How hot are they compared to ghost peppers?
>>
>>42820728

You look around, but there's nothing like walls. Or a horizon, for that matter. An endless, swaying field- and another gate on a hilltop in the distance.
You can't actually see anything, can you. The monsters are going to attack from beneath the wheat. Isn't this cheating?

You nod to yourself.
"Okay, yes? Strategy meeting."
"What? Who are you talking to?"
"Myself."
Nin tilts her head.

You ignore her.
"Jin, can you circle once towards the gate? and then come back and tell us what you've seen."
"I can do that!"
She throws herself onto your arm, and then into the air, whipping through the air against the gentle breeze.

Now that you think about it, there is a breeze. Which is good and bad- It means that the wheat itself isn't some sort of monster and moving under its own power, but you can't rely on it to tell you when things are approaching.

You win some, you lose some.

"Then, while we wait for Jin, we should discuss what we think would be a good way to go about this."
"Kill things that get in our way?"
"Don't step in traps."
"Thank you, Sheszka and Nin. Your contributions have been noted. Ezzy, wake up."

"Sssssna-wha?"
"We are in a dungeon, yes."
"Why?"
"Because there are very few places in a city where I can fight and kill and eat things? And I am doubting that I will find bears even here."
"That was a dumb answer."
"Please provide me with a use for yourself or default to 'poisonous screaming whip'."

She yawns, mouth stretching wide.
"I'll go, go. I'll find stuff."
"Not a warm spot to sleep, yes."
"There aren't any warmer spotsss. Tried."

You let her down to the ground, calling out as she vanishes into the fields.
"I'll make tremors, yes? So you can find us again."
"Kaaay."
Speaking of tremors-

You can't feel any spirits. And no spirits means no radar.
You tap the ground a few times with your leg- It's definitely dirt and stone and all that, but it feels... cut off. Like there isn't magma, or a world moving beneath. Like you're somewhere else.
You don't like it.

You start forward, slowly at first, wading through the shining sea of wheat.
One foot drums a signal to Ezzy- and every other creature in the brush, but you'll kill those. You aren't worried.

You're still tempted to set everything on fire- But you can't help but feel that it's the wrong move. Ren was talking about all sorts pf fire creatures, but do people encounter those before or after they torch the plains?

Beside, you remind yourself.
This isn't some sort of natural formation. This was made, created. It's intentional. Someone, something, wanted this to look the way it does.
Wouldn't it be normal for them to get mad if you ruined everything by setting it aflame?

You wonder if that's where the 'hate' comes from.

Stalks of wheat brush off your carapace as you glide through the field, moving steadily. A dot in the sky rapidly takes the shape of a harpy, probably approaching the sound barrier, wide wings spreading already to slow herself as she swoops in.
Her landing is perfect, a matter of long practice.

"What did you see?"
"Lots of plants. Some moving wrong. More closer to the gate."
"Anything big?"
"Behind the gate."

Is everything hiding under cover of future bread?
Wait, do people come in just to harvest the wheat? That would make a lot of sense. Between that and the river, it would be easy to support the city...
They must, you're sure of it. One piece of a mystery that you weren't investigating and aren't particularly interested in, secured.

Wait.

What?

You lift a leg, looking down.
Something small appears to be trying to bite you, and it isn't even Esmerelda.

There is a weasel on your leg, gnawing at the chitin.
>>
>>42822819

You blink a few times to clear the disbelief, then slam it into the ground until it stops.

A few seconds later, Ezzy is squirming back up your leg, climbing your clothes to reach a proper height.
"Thisss entire field isss full of tiny biting thingsss that chassse Lamia."
Oh. Weasels.
That would be a problem for her, wouldn't it.

"Are you okay, yes? Not hurt?"
"I am better at biting. I couldn't see anything, though."
"And nothing other than weasels?"
"Is that what they are called?"
"Yes."

You look out into the field. You can't even imagine how many weasels it would take to make a meal. This won't do at all.
You'll have to go down.

The traditional rule of thumb was that poison had to be ingested, and anything injected into something was a venom.
