Dust motes whirl around the three of them before slowly settling back down, shafts of sunlight half-illuminating the stand-off in front of you.

The dark goddess wasn't even trying to hide herself. Sure, Arfoire is a seemingly-perfect copy of Estelle at the moment, but the REAL Estelle has a head full of spiky golden hair right now. Instead, Arfoire has the biggest shit-eating grin going on right now, and-

Estelle rings you up on Therapist. Seems like your telepathic powers, limited as they are, act as a two-way street as long as you've close enough to someone you've allied with before. (Take Blanc and get out of the dungeon), the former-brunette-current-blonde transmits, not taking her eyes off Arfoire. (We'll hold her off.)

You grit your teeth. (Can't. We're going /in/, we've got to get that medicine for Mojang. Just come with us and-)

(And then Arfoire will pull her usual underhanded tricks, snatch Blanc right out from under our noses, and teleport away- or /Ein/ will. Look, we don’t have time to argue!) Estelle’s voice rings through your mind, commanding and forceful, a callback to her days as one of Lowee’s great heroes. Even as Estelle (and one that's been roughed-over by your summoned cat-sponge abominations), she manages to cut a snootily royal figure, looking down her nose at her opponents. "The Dragon Warrior and the Warrior of Light, together again. And you've even learned a few new tricks!"

For a moment, you can't help but stare at the unfolding skirmish. You and Mojang, you've fought alongside each other long enough that you've got some synergy going on. Hell, you've seen plenty of adventurers paired up as well-oiled fightin' teams, covering each other's weaknesses and capitalizing on their respective strengths.

But you've never, never seen the sort of teamwork that Estelle and Ein have got going between them.

One moment, Estelle runs down the goddess with the implacability of an avalanche, overpowering her with sword and board, while Ein fills the air with gunfire, empty shells falling from her twisted blade. The next moment, they're switching it up, and Ein becomes a blur of motion and steel, darting in and out and attacking Arfoire from every angle possible, while Estelle hangs back, ripping open the heavens and immolating her doppelganger with a well-timed thunderbolt (shattering whatever windows are left here). Whenever the dark goddess- parrying and dodging like mad- looks like she's about to counterattack, the twin Warriors pull out their blades and slam into her in unison before starting it all over again.

Even your cat-sponges hang back, forming a loose, wary circle around the dueling trio. There's no way they can even THINK to intervene without getting immediately mulched, fried, or both at once.

A stray thought courses across your awestruck mind. Is- is this what that Lily Rank shit is all about?

You shake off your distraction, backpedaling until you're level with Shovel Knight and then dragging her and the Lowee goddess further into the dungeon. C'mon, we've all got some meds to scrounge up, you growl, draping one of Blanc's arms across your shoulder.

Shovel Knight follows suit with Blanc's other arm, although you can just about sense her worried frown as you start walking. "Are we not leaving them to their fate?"

You snort with an insouciance you don't feel. Nah, they'll... they'll be fine. Fought that goddess once before, didn't they? Besides, you'll all go help 'em out once you finish grabbing the meds. Piece of cake.

"What she said," Blanc murmurs, her voice raspy. Even transformed into the HDD form best known for its blistering berserker rage, the battered goddess can't even work up an annoyed frown. Hell, she sounds just like she does when she's NOT transformed: deadpan and reserved. "Heal me up. I'll tear off Arfoire's leg and beat her half to death with it."

"Why only half to death? Er... Lady Blanc," Shovel Knight adds cautiously.

"'Cause I wanna tear off her other leg and finish the job."

... huh. Can't argue with that logic.

A few minutes later, you make it to the last room of the dungeon. For once, nothing horrible blindsided you on the way there- no horrible revelations, no familiar faces out to punch you so hard that your fortress crumbles to its end, and no hideous plot twists that make you paranoid as all hell. Just a dungeon boss waiting for you at the end, pulled out from the nightmares of whoever crosses the dungeon threshold.

It's a few white boxes of some sorta futuristic make, with red crosses emblazoned on its front lid.

More to the point, there... there aren't any goddamn treasure cubes. If there ARE, you don't really have time to look.

You curse under your breath, but bundle up the health packs and make your way back toward Estelle and Ein's battle- you can hear the fighting from all the way in /here/. They'd better be okay. For that matter, Exey and Mojang and Vert and whoever else is still back there waiting for you had better be okay, too.

... come to think of it, you can't help but think that you've completely forgotten about someone. Didn't Ein have an ally or some shit like that?

It goes without saying that you are Prepared To Die(tm), but you weren't QUITE prepared to have a slab of metal shoved through your organs in the most excruciatingly painful way possible. You didn't even have time to scream- you COULDN'T scream as Estelle skewered you, looking like she almost enjoyed it.

Through the haze of blinding agony, you're actually more miffed that you didn't get a chance to fight a goddess and an 8-bit veteran on par with Ein. Well, dying horribly comes with the territory, especially after losing the Dark Wood Grain Ring to a thief.

At least when you lose humanity, Gamindustri's laws of cuteness means your outer appearance never changes, even as you lose your mind. Too bad you can never tell how close you are to hollowing all the way down. For all you know, you could completely snap the next time you die.

Not that anyone would be able to tell the difference.

When you wake up with a splitting ache in your chest (ha ha ha), you realize that you have a dull ache everywhere else. It's when your head jars against a rock, forcing your eyes open and showing you the sky, that you realize that you're being dragged by one leg.

You're not sure what to make of your captor, though- as far as you can tell, she's some frazzled-looking girl wearing tattered clothes that you can't quite make out. Her gait is messed up something fierce, limping like she's already halfway undead herself.

You woozily clamber back onto your feet, and continue catching broken fragments of a brokenly fragmented mind.

The adventurer- originated from Leanbox, if you had to guess, they get all the crazies- clears her throat and pins you with an authoritative stare. "Ma'am, I'm afraid you'll have to come with us. You're under arrest for breaking the law."

You try to give her a wry grin, but you can't muster up anything more than a weary grimace. "What law have I broken?"

And just like that, your one coherent conversation crumbles.

"The... the law of..." Your captor frowns, her face twitching slightly, and the muttering starts up again. "What're you doing, just hose her- break her down for spare parts- she's seen too much she KNOWS too much- shut her up like you did that dumb purple-haired goddess bitch- silence her- you have your orders- okay okay OKAY-"

Huh. Someone who talks to herself incessantly, argues with herself, acts like a sort of jack of all trades... you've heard of an outlaw like that before. You tense up, ready to (ugh) roll away from whatever attack this psychopath's building up the nerve for.

It's a banana peel, hurled with enough force to break you like a twig. You throw yourself out of the way, wincing as the tree behind you shatters into a storm of splinters.

"What's red and white and running all over?" gibbers Thirteen, long since driven to violent lawless madness by a Space Station's worth of personalities vying for control inside her ravaged brain. "Anyone who doesn't bow down to Arfoire! HONK!"

As has been said many times before: there's no real point in asking what X game is like because there's already too many characters in the quest and Blorp can't add more.

You can joke and suggest and talk about it, but there is no "canon" for these characters that Blorp is in charge of.
