"Alright, we're ready to-"
You notice Yuuki slowly walk back out into the courtyard, Kayda in tow. She seems to have a frozen and shocked expression on her face.

"Ye okay, Lass?"
She takes a second to respond, seemingly lost in her thoughts.

"I'm fine."
Har, good to know everything is under control.
You are Jack Albator, handsome adventurer, daring explorer, and formerly appointed leader. You really are moving up in life if the last few weeks have been any indication. Of course, with more power has come more problems.
One of those problems, something that you've noticed a lot recently, is the lack of coordination with your crack team of heroes. All of you are just used to doing your own thing, and it's worked well so far. But if you're going to act like a crew, you need to be able to work as a team. So far teamwork exercise has been spotty, with only half of the crew showing up. No problem! A few growing pains are expected as your ragtag group becomes a professional fighting force.

You look at the list of exercises and try to weigh which one your team needs to focus on the most. Kayda was excellent with rifles, but you haven't seen her use much of anything else. Yuuki is great with anything in close-quarters, but you haven't seen her ever try to use a gun. You could spend the day trying exercises in the field, or you could just spend the day sparring in the practice field.

Fritelli has pretty much given you the first pick of the day. She thinks it would be great if you were to take charge and form a plan for your unit.

>Let's spend today focusing on ranged, it's really only a couple people who are good at that
>Let's go out and try focusing on magic instead.
>No! We need practical experience! Off to the woods to fight wildlife!
>'Ey, Yuuki, you sure you okay?

You first start out the training regiment with a little bit of ranged practice. You have ranged weapons, right? That means that your team should be skilled with them. It's helpful to always have a backup weapon.

Yuuki seemed to adapt to the concept of ranged weaponry the worst.
She first starts out holding a bow incorrectly, and then transitions to almost shooting her foot with a rifle.

"Yuuki! Pay attention!" Fritelli scolds her.

Cody is, of course, a natural with both guns and rifles alike. What you didn't know is that he is also king of improvised weapons, as well! Throwing knives are like a second nature to him, he's remarkably good with a spear, and he demonstrated being able to strike two targets at once with a bola.
Dorje didn't seem to understand the concept of a ranged weapon, but he does pretty well with some training.
Then, it was Kayda's turn. She gave the same half-hearted performance, but was shockingly more accurate this time. Clearly, she has the makings of someone who could grow up to be as skilled as Cody.

Then, you tried an experiment. Swap weapons, try some sparring again.
Oh, this was a hilarious disaster.

Cody, of course, almost fell over several times trying to wield Yuuki's spear. He had more luck trying to throw it than he did trying to hold it with two hands. Yuuki, again, seems out-of-it and barely manages to use the weapons given to her at all. Kayda and Dorje almost refused participation.

So, learning from that, you moved on to your final test: Magic.
Cody is lacking on his wind magic, only able to throw a few gusts here and there. Which is in stark contrast to Dorje and Kayda, who both wield their elements with an almost masterful touch.

Yuuki- Okay, you've had enough.

"Ey!" You look toward her, "What's the deal, eh?"
"N-nothing, I'm fine."

>Yeah right!
>Okay, ten minute break, let's have a chat.
>Yuuki, go sit out for a while, take a rest.

"Okay." You wave your hand at Cody and Dorje, who are trying to compare their magic. "Ten minute break guys, after that let Fritelli tell ye what to do."

They shrug and start talking amongst each other wildly. Each one wanting ot know something about the other and their technique. Even Kayda seems to slowly move out of her shell to ask Cody about his skills with thrown weapons.
The exception is usually the most cooperative of the bunch. Yuuki seems to slowly step away from the few heroes and sit on the benches at the edge of the training yard.

She looks toward her feet, eyes lost in thought.
It's a little discerning to see her this way, you go and sit right next to her.

"'Ey."
She hesitates for a moment, and then snaps up to look at you.
"Oh, hey Jack."

"Is something wrong, Yuuki? Ye been out of yer mind all day."
"No, no, I'm fine. "

"Aye don't believe you. Ye were acting normally earlier when ye went to find Kayda. What happened?"

"Nothing, I don't want to talk about it."

Yeah, you know better than to let it go with just that.

"'Ey Lass. Is it somethin' about training? Is this about that crush thing again-"
"NO!" She seems oddly defensive over that. "It's nothing to do with that."

"Then what?"
"I just." She stops, "I thought someone was something that they weren't."
"Ye didn't have a fight with yer summoner again did ye?"

"No no no, it's. Um."

She seems to think intensely about something. She turns her head toward youas if she just had an idea.
"Let's go take a bath! Just you and me!"
"..What?"

Her face turns red.
"Wait! No! I didn't mean it that way! I mean-"

She hesitates.
"Never mind."

"Just spit it out Lass, what'd ye want? A date?"

"Jack!" She grabs my hand, "You are a man, right?! Nothing else!?"

>"Is that a yes?"
>"..What?"
>"Have ye been drinkin' without me?"

Your eyes remain locked for what feels like an eternity. It feels as if you have the answer right on the tip of your tongue. It's but a fleeting question that poses more problems than solutions.

"What?"
"You heard me! You are a guy, right?!"

You continue staring at her, trying to process what this means or what she is trying to say to you. It's an almost frustrating silence, it's a passing feeling of uncertainty that you're unable to voice in any constructive manner.

"Is that a yes?"
"A 'yes'?" She asks right back.

Her face reddens some more as her fists ball up.
"No! I'm not trying to be cute right now! I am serious! You are a boy, right?"

"'Ey, boy is what ye call a guy who kisses and tells. I'm a man, okay?"

"Well that-" She grumbles, and then sighs.

"Yer not feelin' 'frustrated', are you? Have ye been drinkin' without me?"
"No, but I wish I had been."

That's really something coming from someone who couldn't stand the taste of alcohol even a few months ago. You've really been teaching her well.

"It's complicated, okay?" She crosses her arms. "And I don't really want to just tell the world, because it seems too important for me to meddle with."
"Yuuki, how about this." You lean back. "Ye and I, after this. We go to the bar, get a few drinks, talk about what happened."

She scoffs, "Are you asking me on a date now?"
"Only if ye want it to be."

"Fine." She huffs, "After training. It won't make me feel better right now, though."

>See ye after training, go get some rest.
>Back to work, then.
>Wait, maybe I should ask Tuile if this is okay.

"Aye, then it's settled." You tap her shoulder, "Just the two of us, after trainin'."

"For drinks, right?"
"Yar, for drinks."

You stand up and stretch out your arms, it's hard to imagine that your limbs would feel so tired after such little activity.
"So, ye goin' back to trainin?"
"I suppose so. I've already missed enough."

She stands up and bows, making her way toward the training ground.
"After training?"
"After training."

She has a sort of spring in her step as she walks. You're not sure what you think you've just implied to her, but you're just in it for the drinking.
Whatever, it's fine. You're not one to think much further past the booze, anyway.

--

You and Yuuki manage to use the afternoon rabble to sneak out past the guards, the other heroes, and anyone else who might be nosy about what the two of you are doing.

You miss the days when going to get a drink was just seen as something you did. Everything doesn't have a deeper meaning, you just want to have a drink with a friend.

That said, Yuuki has been talking for about three minutes and you haven't listened to a thing she's said. It's something about women talking that just makes you tune out.
"Aye, can ye repeat almost everythin' ye just said?"

"It's fine. I'm just venting."

"Any of it have to do with what ye got so hung up about earlier?"

You both make your way inside of the pub and find one of the vacant tables. The waitress comes by and immediately gives you the usual while Yuuki just lays her head down on the table.
"'Ey, don't fall asleep on me. Ye came here to tell me somethin', right?"

"Jack." She says, head still on the table. "What should I do if I know something is happening that is morally wrong?"
"Aye think I'm the wrong person to ask."

"I mean, like. What if it was something not even you could defend, like.. child abuse?"

>Shrug.
>Then tell the knights, they'll handle it.
>Aye'd kick someone's ass and feel good about myself.

"Aye'd kick someone's ass and feel good about myself."
You can drink to that. Yuuki just groans.

"What if this was someone too important to maim? I've considered it too, but I'm worried about the implications."

You think about her statement for a second and down another gulp from the liquor.
"This is an oddly specific question, Yuuki."

"It is!" Her head perks up, "It's a very specific question! And I don't know what to do about it!"

This raises more questions than answers, as well as suppositions about your crew member. Typically, if someone came to the capt'n with a question like that, his first response would be to leave port. Unfortunately, you can't quite do that here, despite the fact that you've considered it many times in the past.

"Yuuki." You gulp once more from the glass, just for good measure. "Did I miss somethin'?"

"What?" Her face turns to confusion.

"Wait, wait. Aye'm not saying that right."
"I don't get it. I'm asking if there's something I should do?"
"Besides leave town?" you say, taking another swig of alcohol.

"What are you saying? No, that wouldn't solve the problem at all!"

"Yuuki, did ye do somethin' when ye and Kayda walked off behind the castl-"
Your question is cut off by Yuuki leaning over the table and grabbing you by the collar.

"WHAT?!" She asks, almost in shock.
"Ye asked the question after all! It's not a matter if aye'll forgive ye, Yuuki!"

"No! It wasn't to Kayda! Geez!" She sits back down, crossing her arms.
"..Who was it to, then?"
"NO ONE! I'm not involved, Jack! I think-" She snaps back, face reddening now.

Her features soften as she continues, "-I think it's that maid from Konditorei. But I'm not sure, I'm not sure how to explain it."
"Try alcohol." You scoot your glass over toward her. "It does most of my explainin'."

"It's a little strong but-" She picks up the glass.
"Ah, just try it."

She takes a bitter swig, before setting it back down.
"When do I stop?"
"When ye can't see my face."

She's having a bit of a crisis about that after last thread.

Anyway, thanks for everyone who participated today. I wanted to get further, but that's just how life deals it.

I'm hoping to have a second thread this week, maybe. Maybe I can try having one tomorrow! Check back on my twitter and I'll see if I have the time for it.

Until next time, thank you.
