You are Commander Sonali Vasusena, N7 and Humanity’s Newest Spectre. It’s February 4th, 2184 and after being appointed Spectre, holding a press conference, hiring some mercs, selecting a ship, and checking in at the Spectre Offices, you met Garrus Vakarian and decided to prove that, Yes, you can handle an M-98 Widow just fine.
_

>From the End of Last Thread:

“Oh, I’ll be fine,” you say with a grin as you bring the gun to your shoulder and look down the sights.

It occurs to you then, that even though you’re inhumanly tough, that it might be a good idea to have some kind of failsafe, on the off chance that the gun really is capable of breaking your arm. Armor would normally serve in that role, but you’re only wearing your N7 jacket for protection. You contemplate getting some armor, but that would be cowardly, and you’re not about to show any signs of weakness after your display of confidence earlier.
>>
>>42747447

That’s when you remember, you’re a Biotic. You could reinforce your body with a hard Barrier and use that to mitigate most of the force. But that would require a higher Energy output than you are capable of. You’re well aware that you’re not a very strong Biotic, but your control is rather good. You recall a reading that the Eezo nodes in your body are linked primarily to your somatic nerves, which is why movement was often needed for Biotics to use their abilities. However, it’s possible that you could stimulate the nodes and have them reinforce those self same muscles. It wouldn’t really require much focus to keep up, similar to your Barrier system.

Taking a deep breath, you activate your Biotics. But instead of directing them outward, you focus inward, forcing the energy into your muscles. It’s simple, and easy really, far more so than tossing compressed bundles of Dark Matter around. Taking another breath, you pull the trigger.

The gunshot is massive, indicative of the power behind the weapon that caused it. But the rifle in your arms barely moves, held securely in place by your Biotically reinforced augmented musculature. Downrange, the head of the dummy explodes as the massive round passes through it. Calmly you eject the smoking heatsink, noting that your hands are moving much faster than before, before smoothly rising to your feet to face the stunned Turian, a massive smile on your face.

“Told you.”

At that, Garrus starts laughing, the startlingly human action made alien by his dual-toned voice. “Yeah, I guess you did. To be honest though, I wasn’t too concerned about you handling the gun.”

He gestures to your body, or, rather, to the slight cobalt shimmer that surrounds your body, “THAT, on the other, is really impressive. I’ve only ever seen Cabals pull Focus off. How’d you do that?”

You shrug, “Instead of forcing the energy outwards, I dumped it into my muscles. It’s an interesting feeling.” Raising your hand, you wave it back and forth in front of your face, noting the speed with which it moves as well as the Blue field it leaves in its wake. “Tingles.”

Garrus’s mandibles twitch, “Where’d you learn to do that?”

“Nowhere,” you answer as you fold the Widow back up. “First time I tried that.”

“I’ve seen skilled Biotics pulverize their limbs when they screw that Technique up.” His disbelief is palpable. “You’re telling me that you pulled it off without any training it in before hand?”

You shrug again, “It was easier than pushing the energy out.”

The Turian shakes his head, “You’re something else, you know that?”

“I’m guessing it’s one of the reasons why they made me a Spectre,” you say confidently.

He gives the Turian approximation of a grin, “In my experience, the only requirement is you get the job done.”

That brings up an interesting consideration, “You were with the first human Spectre, right?” You ask. “Any tips or suggestions for the second?"

He laughs an echoing laugh, “Never force your squad into a tiny elevator with a Krogan.”

You chuckle along with him for a moment, “Seriously, though, any actual advice?”

“Well,” he says as he scratches his mandibles. “Two things about Shepard stuck with me.”

Garrus holds up one finger, “The first was her leadership. She was smart and inspiring, both on the battlefield and off. We’d have all followed her into Hell if she asked us.”

He pauses for a moment in thought, “Actually, we kinda did. Ha.”
“Second,” he holds up two fingers, “was her eye for talent. She picked some of the most skilled and dedicated personnel in the entire damn Galaxy. So, make sure you have some good help along the way.”

He crosses his arms, “I guess a third thing would be to make sure you know your crew on a personal level. It’ll help ease out any issues before they arise in the field. Spirits know that we learned that the hard way.”

“Oh?” You raise an eyebrow. “That sounds like an interesting story.”

“In hindsight, somewhat amusing,” Garrus chuckles as he leans against the workbench, arms still crossed. “But at the time it was anything but. You know how humans ovulate?”

You blink, “Um, yes? I AM a woman.”

The Turian waves his hand dismissively, “I know the Alliance stops that with that gene tailoring package you all get when you enlist.” That is true, you haven’t had a period in about a decade. “The thing is, Quarians also go through that whole process and we had Tali on board.”

“Ah,” you wince. You can see how that would be an issue.

Garrus nods at your expression, “Yeah, carrying an exhausted and cramping Quarian through a firefight was... not fun. Managed to get her back to the ship without any injuries but Shepard made sure to stay informed of everyone’s condition after that.”

You snort, “Well, that was pleasant.”

Garrus shrugs, “Hey, you asked.”

“True,” you admit. “Anyways, what exactly are you doing here? Last I heard, you were training to be a Spectre. Not one yet.”

Garrus heaves a sigh, “Well, technically, I already passed the Hierarchy’s qualifiers and I'm next in line to join. It’s just damned politics right now.”

You raise an eyebrow, “Politics?”

“When someone says ‘Turian Spectre’ who do you think of?”

“Oh, that makes sense.”

Garrus grunts, “Yeah, Saren keeps screwing things up even after he’s dead. So, I’m in political limbo. Although Councilor Sparatus managed to swing getting me access to the Spectre Offices. Unfortunately, I have to keep my head down and not shake the boat.”

“That sounds really boring,” You say.

“You have NO idea.”

The conversation dies right there, so you bid Garrus goodbye and head off to take care of other business.

After dropping the Widow back in the Armory, you decide to take care of more pressing issues. Namely, supplies for your ship. Opening your Omni-tool, you read over the missive from Udina on what’s available for your ship. As before the Alliance takes care of most of your necessities, which includes ship munitions, and provides arms and armor for any Marines stationed on your ship. Anything else, such as higher class weaponry, modifications or additional equipment for your ship is entirely up to you. The Ambassador mentions looking at local stores for anything that could be useful.

As you’re reading through this, another message arrives, this one from Alliance Requisitions. It’s the skeleton crew listing for the SSV Nakshatra along with its current equipment.

Sending off messages to your squadmates, you ask if they have any preferences for supplies or equipment for the ship along with the current equipment loadout. You also ask if they know anyone retailers who can provide extra goods.

Jaro messages back that she likes Inferno Grenades and that Cath knows how to fabricate ammo for Heavy Weapons. Cath elaborates on Jaro’s point a moment later, saying that Aldrin Labs’s 140 line of fabricators is insufficient for the task and she’d need Kassa Fab’s Omni-Forge to make explosives. A quick check online tells you that an Omni-Forge goes upwards of 200K, well outside your price range.

Leo chimes in, mentioning that a Volus Merchant named Expat has an in with Elkoss Combine and might be able to swing you some exclusive merchandise if you mention Leo. Jaro then adds a Salarian named Morlan to that list, saying that he has a way of getting unusual gear. Apparently, he was trying to off load a bunch of Geth Weapons the last time she was there.

Cath then mentions that she could jailbreak the fabricator so it could accept blueprints from third party sources but that doing so would be illegal and void the warranty. The second isn’t too much of a concern for her, since she could probably fix the fabber if it really breaks down.

Jaro then asks if she and Cath can bring their gear to the ship.

You give the two mercs the go ahead to bring their gear to the Nakshatra and let the ship’s security know they’re authorized. You also tell Cath that you’ll have to hold off on buying an Omni-Forge for now and to not jailbreak the fabricator yet. Leo mentions that he’s on his way to you and that one of his other contacts messaged him back in the affirmative but they’re not on the Citadel at the moment. Cath immediately mentions that she and Jaro know of third Candidate, but that they’re currently “on vacation” and unreachable. You thank them, and then sit down to start research with the Spectre Net.

Looking into munitions reveals that the Armory does have a crate of Combat Omni-Gel for fabbing Grenades in the field, available for 500 credits, which is rather cheap all things considered. You don't use grenades yourself, but you know that this is probably what Jaro was requesting.

A quick search of Expat reveals a small file on the Volus. Apparently, he’s the nephew of one of Elkoss Combine’s Board Members with contacts throughout the company, which allows him access to exclusive merchandise. Morlan on the other hand is very Grey Market, Contacts on both sides of the Law. Largely left alone because he’s willing to give discounts to Spectres and gets some really interesting items every once in awhile. Some of those Geth weapons ended up in the Spectre Armory.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42754088

On a whim, you look up the Omni-Forge and find that C-Sec impounded a broken one a few months ago. Maybe you could get your hands on it and see if Cath can fix it up.

Speaking of Cath, you decide to run a search on one Catherine Valdez, just to see what it pulls up. The file the system puts together is actually somewhat substantial. You quickly skim over it, and absorb any important details.

Catherine Valdez, born June 18th, 2552 in Houston, Texas on Earth. Mother was Exposed to Element Zero after an industrial accident, developed Biotic Abilities instead of cancer. Ended up in the Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training program. Next few years are mostly blank, but the file does note that BAaT was shut down after Kaidan Alenko killed one of the Instructors and the inhumane training the children were subjected to was brought to light. It also notes that Cath was fitted with an L2 Implant and that her Thalamus may have suffered some damage, resulting in her odd sleeping habits.

>[CONT.]
>>
File: Jaro.jpg (289 KB, 799x764)
289 KB
289 KB JPG
>>42754097

After BAaT, Cath enlisted in the Marines but was discharged at the end of her First tour as a Section 8, being judged Mentally Unfit for military service. Supposedly, she had a breakdown of some sort. After that, she appears several times throughout known space, is multiple professions and is shown to have attained a large number of certifications in various fields. She was indeed a teacher at the Ascension Program, where she helped design several of the lessons and exercises. At that point she was offered a position in Manticore, and served in the company until it was absorbed by the Blue Suns. In recent years, she’s worked independent missions with one Jaroslava Vlcek and a Rayna Ziamna, Both Ex-Manticore Mercs and does some freelance computer work.

You’re vaguely impressed, even if some of the earlier items are a bit concerning. Especially that Section 8 Discharge, thinking back to Inari. You may need to ask her about some of that.

Searching for Jaroslava brings you a much shorter file than Cath’s. Born December 8th, 2054 in New Camden, on Shanxi. Nothing interesting in her childhood, although it says she joined Manticore when she was about 16 and immediately put through training. The file also mentions that, from analysis of bloodwork done a few years ago, she was given a knock-off version of the Army’s Gene Tailoring Package at this time.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42754108

You grimace slightly, knowing what effects that can have. The Alliance only administers their Gene Package if the soldier in question is over 18, and prefers to wait until they’ve turned 21. This is largely to make sure that puberty has run most of its course, and that the subject won’t have anymore growth spurts. Turns out that Jaro had a growth spurt not long after she was given the Gene Pack. That was when she shot up to her current height of 6’6” and put on a massive amount of muscle. After that, she trained as a Shock Trooper and participated in quite a few conflicts in the Terminus, up until Manticore was bought out. Since then, she’s worked with Cath and Rayna Ziamna on several missions and spends her time between them working menial labor or bouncing for some clubs on the Citadel.

You guess that this Rayna is the third person that Jaro and Cath were recommending, so you decide to give her a lookup as well. The file that’s brought up is substantial, but in length, rather than content. Rayna Ziamna, born on the Colony of Cyone in 2060 and grew up in the Legendary Colony’s surprisingly militaristic culture. Enlisted in the Asari Military at the age of 20 and was assigned to a Commando Unit as a Frontline Biotic.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42754124

Served for several decades until she was injured badly during one disastrous mission and left for dead by her squad. Survived, left the Military as soon as she was recovered, spending the several decades as a tourist, wandering throughout the Galaxy. Eventually, she enlisted in Manticore, and served until the company was disbanded. Spends much of her time wandering the stars but comes back to help her friends when they ask and she’s available. Currently on Terra Nova but has booked passage to Omega by way of Ilium.

“Whatcha doin’?” Leo’s voice asks from behind you.

You look up at your second in command, who is leaning down over your shoulder to look at the screen, one hand on the back of your chair and the other holding a cup of coffee, before answering, “Research.”

“Hmm,” He hmms as he reads the page. “This the one Jaro and Cath were vouching for? Asari Commando with a Biotic focus. Seems pretty solid I’d say. Thinking about recruiting her?”

You shrug, “Don’t know yet.”

“Fair enough,” He takes a from his cup. “What’re you going to do next?”

“Well,” you begin as you spin your chair around forcing Leo to stand up straight, “First, I’m going to buy a crate of grenades. Then, we’re going to see C-Sec about an impounded Omni-Forge.”

Leo’s eyebrows shoot up, “They have one?”

“A broken one but yes, they have one,” You say while putting a request for the Grenades into the system. “I wanted to see if Cath could fix it up. After that, I wanted to go see Expat.”

Your Omni-tool beeps and indicates that 500 credits have been deducted from your account and that the purchase is being sent to your ship. That was fast.

“Resourceful,” Leo comments. “Oh, before we go, I got a message from one of the other guys I worked with. The only name I’ve known him by is Arkonus, which translates to “Blackwater” in Latane.”

“Latane?”

“Old Turian language,” Leo explains, “Anyways, he says that he’s willing to work with us, but he’s not available at the moment. Out on assignment, I think.”

You spin back around and enter the name Arkonus into the system. A few moments later a moderate file is collated and presented. No birth date listed, but first showed up about 26 or so years ago. Lots of mercenary activity, lots of claimed bounties. Very morally flexible, seeing as he’s worked for slavers and pirates just as often as he’s worked for any form of authority. It’s noted that he uses an older variant of the Armiger Legion’s Armor and Turian Milspec Weapons.

>>42754805

You look up at Leo, “This the guy?”

“Apparently,” Leo answers. “Knew he was a merc, didn’t know much else though. He’s reliable and damn good in a firefight, if that’s any consideration.”

“We’ll see,” You say in response. “Let’s go take care of business first.”

“Right behind you,” Leo says.

C-Sec HQ isn’t very far away, just a short elevator ride really. Entering the building, you ask the officer at the front desk to direct you to Evidence. At evidence, you’re immediately allowed access when you flash your Spectre Status at them. You’re brought to the locker where the Omni-Forge is stored.

It’s pretty big, a steel grey box half your height and about as wide as a car. The top has a large hatch that can’t close all the way due to the damage on the left side, judging from the crumpled and scorched metal.

Inquiring with the officer on duty informs you that the Omni-Forge was damaged when C-Sec raided a crime boss’s headquarters a few months ago. Apparently, the Forge was being used as a weapons fabrication platform. Normally, it would have been sold at the impound auction last week, but the damage was supposedly extensive enough that no one wanted to buy it. You thank the Asari and decide to take a few scans to assess the damage.

Neither you or Leo can make heads or tails of the results you get so, you send the scans to Cath asking if the Forge can be repaired. She responds a few minutes later in the positive, stating that the casing needs to be welded shut and a large number of the electronics in question to be replaced along with a new Eezo core. Once that was done, it’d probably be serviceable again.

“We’ll take it,” you tell the Officer, arranging for the Forge to be transferred to the Nakshatra.

With that handled, you and Leo take a cab to Lower Zakera Ward to pay a visit to Expat’s stall.

Zakera is pretty crowded, people from every race and walk of life making their way through the most diverse Ward of the Citadel. Of course, most of them give you a decent berth upon recognizing you, a good number of them taking pictures as you pass by.

“So, this must be how a celebrity feels,” Leo snarks at you. “I’m feeling more famous just being near you.”

You don’t give him a response, simply resolving to punch him later when you’re in private. It wouldn’t help your reputation if people thought you were abusing your subordinates. Although the temptation does rise when Leo starts posing for some of them. Grabbing his arm and dragging him along you finally come to the side street where Expat’s small store is located. It’s not much more than a room in a larger prefab, but it’s largely empty, save for the displays of various goods, and a holoscreen running a commercial on the wall and it doesn’t look like anyone is following you in from the street.

“Ah!” Expat perks up from his position behind the counter. “Welcome Leonard! *gasp* It’s good to see you”

“Hey Expat,” Leo greets the diminutive alien with an easy smile. “How’s it going? I’d like to introduce my Commanding Officer.”

You smile and step forward, “I’m Commander Vasusena, pleased to meet you Expat.”

“Oh, the pleasure *gasp* is all mine Commander,” Expat says in a warm tone. “I’m honored to have *gasp* a Spectre in my store. How can I help you today?”

I find it more likely that Volus means merchant in Volus

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expatriate

(on that note, I wonder how TIM who ran two mass effect quests before is doing. I really enjoyed those)
>>
>>42755446
I meant Elkoss combine. But you're right, it wouldn't be necessary. I'll go back to sucking cocks.

Let's just see his exclusive merchandise.
>>
>>42755254
We should ask about investment opportunities with the Elkoss Corperation. It wouldn't hurt to start a portfolio of investments to fund our crew and ship.
>>
>>42755539
True, unlike STG Spectres are expected to buy their own weapons.
>>
>>42755539
thats a good idea, though I'm not sure what our personal finances are like and if we have enough to do that
>>
>>42755553
We've only got our savings and what the alliance gave us for becoming a Spectre. The council doesn't pay Spectres, and I doubt our Alliance Military pay check is going to keep us a float. The council expects Spectres to find their own funding and manage their own finances. Plus if we invest heavily in weapons, armor, ship, amd tech industries we coild get access to rare or unique gear and upgrades for ourselves, the crew, and our ship.
>>
>>42755596
I know all that, I'm just wondering if we've got the savings to actually invest to the point where we get a meaningful return to help keep us and our operations afloat.
>>
Guys, look at the Character Sheet. We've got quite a bit of money at the moment.
>>
>>42755627
thats not really a lot, thats like half a years pay with hazard rates and combat bonuses
>>
>>42755645
Yes, but it's in a lump sum. Would you like half a year of your own current pay (with hazard rates and combat bonuses) as a bonus to kickstart your new job? And a company car? And you get to hand pick the people working under you?
>>
>>42747447
You do know that not all spectres are commanders right?
>>
>>42755645

We were just promoted to Commander remember? That's like a years pay for a LTCMDR which decent amount of money.

>>42755663

A company car capable of flight, FTL travel, and wiping large population centers off the map.
>>
>>42755680
You have read the quest right?
>>
>>42755663
Right so we should invest a portion of it. We'll still need a nest egg for emergencies, and we can earn more credits by taking on jobs. (as long as the jobs aren't too shadey.) We should reinvest a portion of the money we'll make back into the companies we'll have invested in, but for now this is a start.
>>
>>42755697
But what about social security and 401k?
>>
>>42755735
We're not old enough to retire, so let's not worry about that. Plus if we invest wisely we'll be able to retire off and live off of that. Well we'd have to amke sure the reapers don't wipe out all life to truely be able to worry about it, but our character is still skeptical about that.
>>
"Leo here said you can get me supplies and some other quality wares,” You say. “What services or goods can you offer?"

“Hmm, I might have something *gasp* of use for a Spectre,” the volus brings up his Omni-tool and the counter activates an integrated holographic display. “I can stock you up on a variety of munitions *gasp* and weapons, some enough for your entire crew.” Several weapon models are displayed, in bulk. “I also have *gasp* several weapon modifications but they are singular purchase only.”

“I can also, for a small fee, *gasp* use my contacts to provide a few services if you happen upon them,” Expat adds, bringing up a substantial list of names and their locations. “I can probably arrange for certain *gasp* discounts or other services to be made available.” You can see several that you don’t have.

You agree to invest 25K in Expat’s portfolio, and ask if he’s willing to trade some Mattocks for some of the Avengers you have on hand. He agrees almost immediately, offering a 1 for 1 trade. Turns out the the Mattock wasn’t very popular with his customers. You receive 10 Mattocks and Authorize 10 Avengers to be moved to Expat’s warehouse. The investment is also transferred safely.
