You are Brother Antarius, sternguard veteran of the Lamenters space marine chapter. Due to your chapter's involvement in the Badab War, your chapter was sentenced to a hundred years of penitent crusade. Having barely survived the crusade, your chapter's fleet gathered to return to the Imperium and rebuild. Unfortunately, your ship suffered a major malfunction during the warp jump and was seperated from the fleet, landing centuries into the future. Only you and eight other marines survived, and there has been no sign of the rest of your chapter's fleet. With the fleet missing, it is now up to you and your surviving brothers to rebuild the chapter until the fleet can be located.

Your chapter was contacted by the planetary governor and told of an unknown space hulk that has entered the system, close to your homeworld of Heilos Prime. Though dangerous, you agreed to assist him in searching the space hulk on the stipulation that you would have to retreat if you encountered large enemy resistance. Unfortunately, upon entering the space hulk you were attacked by slaaneshi cultists, and your exit was cut off by a rogue Thunderhawk. You managed to survive the thunderhawk's assault by closing the hangar bay doors, but the terminal controlling them shorted out upon closing, leaving you with no way to open them again. Now trapped withing the space hulk, you have no choice but to prepare for the next incoming assault

“INTRUDERS! REND THEIR FLESH AND LET THEM SING IN AGONY!”

The next wave of heretics comes crashing upon you without mercy. This time, the flash of lasgun fire is joined with the loud boom of bolter fire. It seems the lasgun-toting heretics are only meant to be a buffer between you and the real threats, a smaller horde of more heavily mutated heretics carrying bolters and boltpistols. In the back, however, lies an even greater threat.

Five chaos space marines, equipped with armor painted the same mix of purple and silver as the thunderhawk outside. It appears their armor was originally silver, before being haphazardly painted over with purple. One is carrying a heavy bolter, three are equipped with standard boltguns. The last one is very heavily mutated, with a third arm protruding from the left side of his lower abdomen and a second pair of eyes placed on his forehead, glowing a dark purple. In his left and right hand he has two power swords, and in his third hand he holds a boltpistol. All five of the marines stand behind the heretics, content to let the heretics serve as a wall between them and you, save for the mutated one who is slowly making his way forward, firing his boltpistol as he goes.

You quickly assess the situation. Though most of the heretics are only equipped with lasguns, you are still greatly outnumbered. The enemy is coming from the door on the left side of the hangar, while nothing seems to be coming from the door on the right side. You could make a tactical retreat to the right and try to seal the door behind you, but doing so would separate you from the shuttles. Your only other option would be to hunker down and fight off your assailants as best you can, an equally risky decision which would likely result in heavy casualties.

>Tactical retreat, seal the door behind you.
>>
>>42746181
You're outnumbered in enemy territory and there's no way of knowing if this is even the final wave coming your way. Your best option right now is to make a tactical retreat.

"Everyone, fall back!" You command, providing covering fire while the others begin to retreat. The serfs and guardsmen are the first to move while you and your brothers cover their retreat. Bolts and lasfire whiz past you as you finally break from cover and make your way to the door, followed by the rest of your brothers. With everyone inside, the door is slammed shut.

"This won't hold them for long. We need to seal the door." Magron states.

With silent acknowledgement, Akriel levels his Combiflamer and unleashes a torrent of flaming promethium on the door's edges, fusing the door shut. The heretics begin pounding on the door, but to no avail. Damaged as this ship may be, it's thick door will not yield so easily, much less after being fused shut. Eventually, the sound of banging and rambling threats disappears, and the humans in your group breath a sigh of relief.

"Well, we're safe for now." Private Callen says. "But what do we do now? Our only way out is sealed, and the shuttles had the only vox terminals strong enough to contact the governor."

"We were not to be gone too long, the governor will guess that something has gone wrong after an hour or so of radio silence." Akriel states.

"Yes, but we have no way of telling him our location now." Magron points out.

"Magron has a point. Without a vox, we can't relay our location for extraction." You agree.

"Then what is our course of action?" Elyas asks.
>>
>>42747532
You take a moment to think. You are safe for now, but lingering would be unwise, as the heretics will find a way around the sealed door eventually. In addition, you have no vox to contact the governor, and thus no way of receiving extraction. There may be a vox terminal somewhere on the hulk, but you'll have to find it.

The room you are currently in is a long corridor, with multiple doors on each side leading down. It looks like this was the barracks for serfs responsible for hangar duty. You may find some basic supplies here if you take the time to search. There is a large door at the end of the hallway, leading further into the space hulk. It appears to be the only way in or out now that you've sealed the hangar door behind you.

This ship was an astartes ship, so it should have a familiar layout. You could look for the communications room and see if they have a working vox terminal. There's no way of knowing how heavily guarded that room will be though, or even if their terminals are functional. Alternatively, you may be able to search the lower levels for the escape pod bay. Assuming they have any functional pods left, you may be able to evacuate at least part of your team off the space hulk.

You don't really have any explosives on you besides grenades. You have grenades, flame-based weapons, two meltaguns, and the guardsmen are equipped with lasguns, but no meltabombs or anything like that.
>>
>>42747812
Do we have tripwire, or can it be scavenged?

We can at least seal a few more doors to create killzones. Or just seal everything when it becomes a waiting game.
>>
>>42747584
"Search the area, see if there's anything useful to be found. Be quick, we can't stay too long before the heretics get around the door and corner us."

By your command, everyone splits up and begins searching the serf barracks, looking for anything of use.

The barracks are, for lack of a better term, disgusting. Not just because of their dilapidated state, but because of the heretical markings scrawled across the walls. Blasphemies against the Emperor, prayers to the Ruinous Powers, and incoherent threats against the Imperium are scrawled on the grimy metallic walls. Some of the men avert their eyes, others mutter silent prayers to the Emperor. All of them, however, do as you command and search the room for equipment.

"My lord, you may want to see this." One of the serfs calls out to you. You follow him, wondering what caught his attention. When you discover what he found, your grip on your Combiflamer tightens.

The room is lit by a dull purple glow, emanating from some small trinket lying on what appears to be a makeshift shrine. More heretical writings can be found on the walls here, but the most prominent is written above the shrine, in big purple letters.

'DEATH TO THE ULTRAMARINES, LONG LIVE THE SILVER HAWKS!'

The Silver Hawks. You have never heard of such a chapter, but given the haphazard painting on the thunderhawk and chaos marines you encountered, you assume that is what the previous owners of this ship were called. This hulk must be their base, which means you are sure to find more chaos marines onboard.

The icon on the shrine continues to glow. You notice that the longer you remain in this room, the more you find your eyes drawn to the icon. Moreover, you notice that some of the guardsmen who have been here a while are beginning to stare at the icon blankly.

The moment the icon shatter, there is a brilliant flash of purple. The humans shield their eyes from the flash, but beyond that it seems nothing happened. At least, nothing happens immediately. You're just about to leave the room when the guardsmen in the room begin to retch.

"Oh by the Emperor, what is that- BLARGH!" He shouts, doubling over and puking onto the floor.

"What's wrong?" You ask. A moment later, however, you get your answer as some unholy stench invades your helmet's filters, causing even your stomach to churn. You hear the sound of retching coming from further down the corridor as well, it seems the smell is spreading quickly.

"That smell!" One of the guardsmen declares. "By the Emperor, it's like rotten Skrag soaked in- URP!"

The guardsman hurls once more. Destroying the totem must have released this foul odor somehow.

"That smell." Astramael says, approaching your room. "What happened?"

"There was a heretical icon in here. The smell was released right after I destroyed it." You answer slowly, trying your best not to vomit yourself.

Something must click in Astramael's head, as he nods and points towards the door. "Everyone, outside immediately. Before the stench becomes suffocating." He says firmly.

The guardsmen are happy to oblige, almost pushing each other out of the way to escape the smell. Your brothers follow immediately after, and as soon as everyone is out Astramael closes the door.

"Brother, I advise caution in the future when destroying peculiar artifacts." Astramael says. "Destroying that icon caused a psychic phenomena. We are fortunate that it only caused a minor disturbance."

"Minor?" Private Callen says, still gagging. "You call that unholy stench minor?"

"Yes private, that was minor. The stench was not immediately lethal, so all things considered it could have been much worse."
>>
>>42749526
"...Not -immediately- lethal?"

"Why do you think I was so quick to have everyone vacate the room? In any case, if anyone managed to find supplies, now is a good time to bring them forward."

At Astramael's command, everyone begins bringing forward their findings. Most of them are fairly minor, a few lasgun magazines, some frag grenades, a couple rations. One guardsman does find a box of Krak grenades, however, and your brothers end up splitting them between each other and a few guardsmen.

>3 Krak Grenades (anti-armor grenades) added to inventory.

It's not much, but it's something. On the bright side, Astramael informs you that the scent from the icon should be lethal by the time the heretics from the hangar find their way here.

"Now then, our best chance now is to look for this ship's communications room. With luck, we'll be able to get in contact with the governor from there."

"If their terminals are functional, there should be guards posted there." Akriel comments.

"Indeed. Everyone, stay close and be ready to fight. If anyone sees movement, call it out."

--------
The trip up to the ship's communications room is, surprisingly, uneventful. No heretics, no traitor marines, it's almost too quiet as you make your way to the ship's communications room. Of course, the silence ends once you reach your destination.

Two traitor marines, one armed with a power sword and boltpistol, the other is carrying a combibolter. You can't tell from out here, but there may be more inside. How many, you're not sure.

Currently, you are leaning across the corner several meters away from the traitor marines' posts. They have not seen you yet, giving you the element of surprise.

"Two traitor marines guarding the door." You signal back to the others. "Serfs, use your flamer to create a distraction and draw them out. Once they are close, our melee specialists will engage the one wielding a power sword. Go!"

On your go, the serfs equipped with flamers rush out past the corner, spraying fire around as they go. The guards notice them immediately and bring their weapons to bear.

"THE INTRUDERS ARE HERE!" One of them shouts, rushing forward with his power sword while the one with the combibolter fires at the serfs. Thankfully, the serfs are able to reach cover before the barrage of bolter fire can hit them, and the melee guard chases after them, bringing him close to your hiding spot.

"Now!"

Quickly, Elyas charges forward with his own power sword. The melee guard is caught off guard, but unfortunately the other reacts quickly. Before Elyas can reach his target, the other guard fires his combibolter, wounding Elyas. He still stands, but the attack provides the melee guard with enough time to collect himself and strike back, swinging his power sword at the wounded assault marine. Elyas parries, but he will not last long against the combined assault of the traitor marines.

Meanwhile, the sound of shouting can be heard from inside the communications room. It seems more are coming.

"Serfs, create a distraction!" You shout out. Callen hears your order, and instucts the other serfs to create a screen of fire, blocking the combibolter marine's vision. The guard continues to fire through the screen, but thankfully the screen prevents him from hitting anything accurately.

"Elyas, back away!"

Elyas does as you say, kicking his opponent away and moving out of your way, allowing you and the others to open fire on the melee guard. Bolts and burning promethium consume the traitor marine, and he quickly dies in the crossfire.

"Clear the screen, quickly now!" You command the serfs once more, and they cease fire. Pulling the pin off one of your Krak grenades, you toss it as soon as the fire clears, the grenade landing right at the foot of the last guard. He only manages to get one step away before the grenade explodes, sending him sprawling onto the ground.

A moment later, four heretics and one more traitor marine come out of the communications room. The marine looks heavily mutated, he wears no helmet and has a third eye in the center of his forehead which glows with shifting colors. His right arm mutates at the elbow into a myriad of tendrils, from which the blade of what appears to be a force sword grows forth, like a part of his arm. The traitor marine extends a hand, and streams of lightning fly forth. Astramael, now standing at the head of the group, creates his own psychic barrier to block out the enemy's attack. He succeeds, and you are about to level your combiflamer at the traitor marine when suddenly, you hear it again.

"Emperor on his throne, not agai-URK!"

The smell returns, crippling the guardsmen with nausea and even causing you severe discomfort. However, someone appears to be suffering even more from the smell.

"THE SMELL! IT PIERCES MY MIND LIKE A THOUSAND KNIVES!"

The traitor marine coughs violently at the stench, yet rather than shielding his nose he inhales deeply, drinking in the foul odor even as his third eye begins to weep tears of blood. You're not sure if he's pleased or displeased with the smell, but it has certainly distracted him from the current battle.

"Now my brothers, fire!" You force out, leveling your combiflamer and firing on the traitor while he struggles with the stench. You brothers join in, riddling him with bolts and drowning him in fiery promethium. The traitor cries out in pain and falls to the ground, the fires still burning his corpse.

Though the battle is now over, the guardsmen still struggle with the unholy stench unleashed by the powers of the Warp. Once again, Astramael herds everyone out of the hallway, leading them into the communications room and closing the door behind them to keep out the stench.

"I swear, does everything on this damned ship need to smell like...I can't even describe that unholy stench." Private Callen complains, the others grumbling their agreement.

While the men gripe, you and Magron come to the main vox terminal and begin examining it for damage. The vox appears mostly undamaged, and after a moment of tinkering Magron determines that it is indeed fully functional. Assured that the terminal will work, you switch the vox channel to the one you used to keep in contact with the governor.
>>
>>42752647
"This is Brother Antarius of the Lamenters chapter, contacting Governor Cromwell of Heilos Prime. Do you read me?"

There is a short pause, then the governor's voice comes through on the terminal's speakers. Static makes it hard to hear the governor, but you recognize that it is him.

"This is governor Cromwell, reading you loud and clear. What the hell's happened, you were supposed to check in an hour ago?"

"We have encountered resistance. Heretics and traitor marines have infested the space hulk, and our escape has been cut off, I repeat. Heretics and traitor marines have infested the space hulk. Requesting immediate extraction."

"Dammit! I read you Antarius, I'm contacting the Imperial Navy now. I'm sending ship to pick you up, meet them at the hangar for extraction."

"Negative governor, the hangar has been sealed. The hangar bay door has been sealed shut and we are unable to reopen them."

"It's never easy, is it? Let's see...Looks like there's a large hole in the port side of the ship where we dropped you off. Make your way there and we'll pick you up, ETA thirty minutes."

"Roger governor. Be advised, the heretics have a Thunderhawk, possibly more. Recommend sending armed gunships for extraction."

"Copy that Antarius, we'll send in the big guns. Navy's on it's way to deal with the hulk once you've been extracted. Over and out."

With an extraction point set, you turn off the terminal and turn back to the rest of your group. “You heard the governor, we need to make our way to the hull breach on the port side of the ship. Those of you not wearing your environment suit's helmet, now's the time to put them back on. Let's move.”

----
“Intruders?”

“YES MY LORD. SIX MARINES, MANY MORE SOLDIERS.”

“I see. Then I will make my way down there immediately. Where was their last known location?”

“THE HANGAR BAY, MY LORD. WE BELIEVE THEY ARE- WAIT!”

“What's wrong?”

“THE LOYALISTS ARE HERE! REND THEIR FLESH FROM THEIR BONES!”
>>
>>42752676
The sound of explosions and gunfire could be heard over the vox. Quickly, the figure rose from his seat.

“Loyalists, how interesting!” He proclaimed to the empty room. “Come, let us give our wayward brothers a proper greeting!”

---------
The group moved quickly, aiming to arrive at the port side breach before the extraction's arrival. Heretics and traitor marines sometimes crossed your paths, but they were quickly gunned down and the group proceeded forward.

“We're almost there men, our extraction should arrive in ten minutes” You announced, as Astramael came to a very sudden stop.

“Brothers...we have a problem.” He announced, holding a hand to his head.

“What is wrong?”

“I am sensing a powerful warp presence coming this way. It is moving fast, terribly fast. I believe it is coming for us.”

“Can you tell what it is?” You ask, memories of twisted daemons and twisted heretics coming to your mind.

“It is human, but just barely. I believe it may very well be their chaos lord.”

Chaos lords, powerful heretics that command legions of heretics and traitor marines. Nearly without exception they are very powerful, and are often so twisted with mutation they hardly appear human anymore.

“What should we do, brother? It is heading our way.” Astramael asks. The guardsmen and serfs tense up at the sudden direness of his voice, gripping their weapons tight and looking around for whatever threat is approaching.

You look at your currently assembled group. You have six marines counting yourself. One of them, Elyas, has been wounded but is still capable of fighting. You have over a hundred guardsmen and serfs, but most are equipped with lasguns, which will pose little threat to a chaos lord outside of mass concentrated fire. You have ten minutes until the ships arrive to extract you.

1 vote to stay behind and take Astramael and one other marine
1 vote to stay behind (since making a stand won't be at the extraction point)
1 vote to send serfs, guardsmen, and Elyas to extraction while the rest hold of the chaos lord (preferably with grenades rigged to explode and where the gunship can provide support)
And 1 vote to stay behind.

So assuming I haven't misinterpreted something in my sleep-deprived vote counting, staying behind has the most votes. In which case,

If a chaos lord is coming, then you need to hold him off. It will be too dangerous for the ships to come in for extraction otherwise, and with only six marines and humans armed mostly with lasguns, you don't like your chances if you tried to go to ground and hold him off while extraction arrives. You need someone to hold him off, but you know anyone that goes to distract the chaos lord has very low odds of survival. If somebody has to take the risk...

"Arkiel, take the others and head for the extraction zone. I will keep the chaos lord distracted to buy you time."

"Brother, are you sure that is wise?" Akriel asks. "If we stay together, we may be able to-"

"Not with six marines." You cut him off. "Not when most of the solider here are armed with simple lasguns. I do not need to defeat him, I need only keep him busy while the rest of you make your escape."

"...Understood, brother."

"Hold on, you're planning to fight alone, are you nuts?" Private Callen intervenes. "With all due respect my lord, if we stick together we can-"

You reach out and grab Private Callen's flamer, giving him a firm push. With your strength, you easily manage to shove him down a couple meters away even while holding back.

"You do not know how dangerous our foe is. I have fought for over three centuries, I have seen the worst this galaxy has to offer. I am not sure I could defeat him by myself, but I am certain I can keep him busy while the rest of you get to safety."

"You're going to get yourself killed." Private Callen says, picking himself up off the ground.

"Perhaps. But that is my duty, to fight and die in service to the Emperor. If life is the Emperor's currency, then I will gladly give mine to save more. Now go, before the chaos lord arrives."
>>
>>42753782
"Come on, let us move." Akriel says, motioning for the others to follow him.

"You're going to let him stay behind?" Callen says, bewildered.

"Our chapter is in critical condition as it is, we cannot afford to lose more marines than we already have." Akriel states.

"Well I'm not a marine, so I'm staying."

"No, you are not. To stay behind and get yourself killed would be an unforgivable insult to Brother Antarius's sacrifice. I will not allow it."

"Go private. Rather than getting yourself killed, stand with my chapter and help preserve them in the future." You tell the private, handing him back his flamer.

"...Oh Emperor dammit, fine. Just don't get yourself killed, my people still owe you for saving our lives back on Fumarius."

“Fear not, Private Callen. I do not fear giving my life, but I do not plan to surrender it without a fight.”

The matter settled, Akriel leads everyone down the hall, towards the sealed door leading towards the hull breach. Once the door closes behind them, you make your way down the hallway next to it, in the direction of the signature Astramael pointed out.

---------
The ship's hallway opens up into a large room, most likely one of the training halls marines would use when away from their monastery for extended periods of time. As the door opens, you clear the area for hostiles, checking each corner for heretics. Just as you clear the room, you see the door on the opposite side of the hall open up.

"How surprising. I thought I would come to greet you, but it seems you've come to greet me instead."

The large figure before you is an abomination. He...no, IT wears a space marine's armor and it has the basic shape of a humanoid being, but it is no space marine. It's face is twisted into an unrecognizable shape, with six beady black eyes and unnaturally pink flesh. It's mouth is peeled back, revealing rows of yellow, jagged teeth. It is bald, and a glowing purple symbol of Slaanesh is marked prominently on it's forehead. In it's left hand it holds a plasma pistol, and in it's right hand it holds a sword, colored purple and twisted into several spikes and what almost appears to be a face at it's guard. It moves with unnatural grace, and the very air around it seems to scream in protest to the creature's existence.

"You are alone though. How boring. Where are the rest of your people?"

>"That is none of your business, foul creature."
>"I am Brother Antarius, Veteran of the Lamenters chapter. I will be more than enough to deal with you."

"I am Brother Antarius, Veteran of the Lamenters chapter. I will be more than enough to deal with you." You declare, shouldering your combiflamer and firing a round at the accursed creature, dashing for cover amongst the scattered debris.

"AHAHAHAHA, how humorous." The chaos lord laughs, as small pieces of him are blown off by your bolterfire. He seems unfazed, not even bothering to take cover from you.

"Lamenters. How curious. It's been a long time since I heard about the Lamenters, I'd thought they died out centuries ago, but I suppose not. Let's correct that then, shall we?"

A round of plasma strikes the debris next to your head, melting it away. You pop up and fire again, before hunkering down behind cover once more.

"But you know, it is a shame that we must fight each other, brother. After all, you should know as well as I how cold and unforgiving the Imperium can be. I must wonder why you continue to fight for them. Lord Huron would surely welcome you with open arms, after all."

>"Do not compare us, traitor. We are nothing alike."

"What do you know of such a thing, traitor? We are nothing alike."

"Funny that you should call me a traitor, when it was your chapter that turned it's back on the Imperium long before mine even came to be."

The chaos lord's sword slashes through the debris you were using as cover. You roll away and unload bolter rounds in his face, causing him to grasp his face in pain. You note the different results from earlier, as you run across the room and take cover behind a corner.

"We have learned from our error, and we will not be swayed again."

"What error? You did the right thing, standing against the emperor. If you would only swear loyalty to Huron once more-"

"Never. Our loyalty to the Imperium is unshakeable."

"A what a tragedy that is, that you place your loyalty with people who reward your loyalty with distrust and hatred."

"What would you know of such things?"

"More than you think, brother. You chapter disappeared long ago, but our progenitors still utter venomous insults against your chapter. Amazing that the Ultramarines would hold such a strong grudge for what I assume was an unintentional insult. But then again, we know firsthand how quick they are to cast down their own allies."

The Ultramarines? They must have been a successor chapter to the Ultramarines, before they fell to chaos.

>"You talk too much. I'll not be swayed by the words of a heretic, so save your breath."
>"I have told you, we are nothing alike, so stop trying to compare us." Throw grenade.

"You know nothing of my chapter, or why we fight. A heretic like you would never understand."

"Oh really? Then enlighten me, brother. Why do you continue to fight for an Imperium that scorns you, that treads on your name."

"We are Space Marines. We exist to protect the Imperium, to protect it's citizens. We were meant to stand between them and those who would harm them. For them, we will gladly fight and die, no matter what others say. Traitors like you, who fight and kill the very people they were trained to protect, are the lowest of scum. You know nothing of loyalty, and that is why we are nothing alike."

The chaos lord sighs, a sound more akin to a reptile's hiss than an actual human sigh. "It seems you are too blinded by the Imperium's indoctrination to see reason. Very well then, if you are so eager to die then I will grant it to you."

You take stock of your grenades. You have three frag grenades and two krak grenades. Leaning out from cover, you check on the chaos lord's position and wait for your chance.

You don't have to wait long, as the chaos lord charge at you with startling speed. Just before he swings his unholy sword, you roll out of the way and pull the pins on your grenades, throwing them in rapid succession. They explode at the chaos lords feet, an ear-piercing screech of pain indicating your grenades had an effect.

While the chaos lord is distracted, you make a break for the door, leading him away from the extraction zone. Plasma bolts fly past you as you run, narrowly missing their target. When you get out the doors, you turn around and shoulder your combiflamer as you run, leveling it at the chaos lord's face. You empty your magazine into his face, stunning him for just a moment, giving you more space between him and yourself.

"Brothers, come in." You speak over your vox link. "I am engaging the chaos lord now, what your status on extraction?"

"The gunships have contacted us on vox, brother. They are engaging the enemy's Thunderhawk right now. Our brothers on the ground are on their way with our own Thunderhawk as well."

"Roger. I will keep the chaos lord busy for as long as I can."

You say that, but as you look behind you the chaos lord shrieks and begins chasing after you at an unnatural speed. You won't be able to outrun him, but some well place shots and grenades could slow him down.

You reload your combiflamer and take aim at the chaos lord's left hand, the one holding a plasma pistol. It takes two shots, but you succeed in disarming him. He still has his sword though, which you feel is far more dangerous than his plasma pistol.

The chaos lord starts to catch up. Seizing the opportunity, you come to an abrupt halt and fire the flamer of your combiflamer, igniting his face with holy promethium. The heretic screams in pain, the sound of which is almost loud enough to make your ears bleed. It seems heat and fire are more effective against it than normal bolts.

"This chase has gone far enough!" The chaos lord shouts. He takes a deep breath, and screeches in your direction. The air vibrates with his shout, as though he'd fired a sonic weapon.

The sonic blast reaches you before you can react. The sound is deafening, made worse by your helmet's auto-senses. The pain brings you to your knees, causing you to grasp at the sides of your helmet, desperate to block out the sound but to no avail.

"Br...shi...ved...ll...k..."

Something is said over the vox, but you can't quite make it out, your ears still ringing from the sonic blast. The chaos lord approaches you, saying something you can't quite make out and brandishing his sword. As you look up at him, another feeling begins to mingle with the pain.

Rage. Primal, insatiable anger. Roused by the danger of your situation, the Red Thirst begins to claw at your mind, offering you strength if you'll only let it out. Your teeth clench, and the grip on your combiflamer tightens until you wonder if you'll damage it. The Thirst floods your mind, but you still remain in control. Your situation is indeed dire, perhaps now is the time to let the Thirst out.

If ever there were a time to embrace the Thirst, it's now. The Red haze begins to flood your head completely, all thoughts outside of bloodshed driven out of your mind. The pain begins to fade to nothing, and you feel your strength begin to grow exponentially.

The chaos lord says something, then lifts his sword to finish you off. With lightning speed, you draw your combat knife from it's sheathe and block his sword, steadily rising back to your feet. With a grunt, you kick him away, putting some space between you and him.

"S...ill..me...ight left in you? Very well, but my patience grows short."

Your sense of hearing begins to return, as you glare at the chaos lord, almost snarling like a wild beast under your helmet. From the corner of your eye, you see a large nick left in your combat knife. It seems you won't be able to parry that sword of his again without destroying your knife. A few yards behind the chaos lord, you see his plasma pistol lying on the ground.

Grip tightening on your combiflamer, you bellow out with rage, the Red Thirst now fully driving you to slaughter the foe before you.

>Red Thirst mode activated

You rush forward, charging in a blind fury towards the chaos lord. You ram your shoulder into him, pushing him over and sit on top of him, bringing your combiflamer to bear. However, he grabs your gun and tosses it aside before you can pull the trigger, and punches you in the side of the head to get you off of him. This time he mounts you, swinging his wicked sword at your face. You grab his sword arm with one hand, and with the other you bury your combat knife in one of his eyes, giving it a hard twist once it's pierce his eye. He cries out in pain, and you manage to kick him off of you.

The plasma pistol comes into view again. You sprint towards it, dodging another frustrated swing at you and grabbing the pistol off the ground.

"Brother Antarius, I repeat. The gunships have arrived. If you can hear this, fall back to the extraction site."

You hear the vox message, but the thirst refuses to leave. It demands blood, it demands that the chaos lord die.

You try to exert control over yourself, to end the Thirst and run for the extraction zone, but the thirst refuses to be put back into it's cage so easily. You struggle against it for a bit, fighting to regain control, but in the end the thirst manages to remain in control, just barely.

With the thirst overriding your thoughts, you begin advancing towards the chaos lord, firing the plasma pistol at his legs as you go. The shots connect, hot plamsa melting it's way through his armor and searing the tainted flesh beneath. You fire again, this time at his other leg's kneecap. His howls of pain drive the thirst crazy, and your fire again. The plasma pistol begins to overheat from repeated firing, and it's only through what little self control you have left that you stop yourself from firing again, lest the pistol eject hot air out at you. You approach your combiflamer, picking it up and holding it in one hand towards the chaos lord, who is now having trouble standing due to his horribly injured legs.

"We can't stay for long, Brother. If you're hearing this, we can only stay another ten minutes or so before we need to leave. Over."

Despite the damage to his legs, the chaos lord rises to his feet. Now almost as enraged as you, he starts to take another deep breath, like he did earlier before shrieking at you.

1. Throw plasma pistol at him and shoot with combiflamer
2. Run, while leaving flamer on.

I'll need one roll of 3d10, and three rolls of 1d100, taking the highest. If none of them are 70 or higher, I'll need one more roll of 3d10 for shoving a grenade in his mouth.

I don't think we're going to get ludicrous bounty money for this.

You can bet your power armored ass that the =][= will be on us as soon as they hear that we've got a run in with a traitor chapter.

Am I missing a reference?

yeah, the red thirst parallels Grit Mode from DAQ, where Ivan rolled well and managed to kill the DO NOT PURSUE LU BU waaaay ahead of schedule.

You struggle for control once more, this time successfully forcing the Thirst to submit. The Red haze clears from your mind, and once again you are back in control of yourself.

"Here, this is yours." You say, tossing the plasma pistol at the chaos lord's feet, and firing a single bolt at it with your combiflamer. The plasma gun explodes, coating the the chaos lord in molten hot plasma. The chaos lord screeches into the air, the sonic blast flying harmlessly into the air as the hot plasma eats through the chaos lord's flesh and armor. In your experience, chaos lords can vary greatly in power. Regardless, you don't stick around long enough to find out if this one is capable of surviving a plasma explosion, turning your combiflamer's flamer on and spraying behind you as you run for the extraction zone.

----
You reach the extraction zone, and find a single gunship waiting for you. The loading door opens, and you are greeted by Akriel and Tacitus.

"Brother, you've survived." Akriel says with relief.

"Yes Akriel, it seems I live to fight for the Emperor another day."

"What of the chaos lord?"

"I left him coated in molten plasma. I believe he is dead, but it wouldn't be the first time a chaos lord survived where he should have died."

"I see. Regardless, he will not survive once the navy begins bombarding the hulk. Reinforcements from the imperial navy are already here to destroy the hulk."

"Good. Then lets not keep them waiting."

You follow Akriel into the gunship, followed by Tacitus. The loading door closes slowly, and the gunship's thrusters begin liftoff.

"I am glad you survived, Brother." Tacitus tells you, speaking for the first time since his revival on Nocturne.

"Likewise, Tacitus. Now lets be off, I've had enough of this space hulk."

Oh yeah, the bigass reggae power armored chap. Shame that quest died.

Alright, I'm going to call it a...morning here now. Hope you all enjoyed it.

As I've said on twitter and /wqdt/, Lamenters Quest has gotten a bit dry for my taste. However, I had a lot of fun running this thread, so I think rather than shelving the quest I'll just be placing it on hiatus, until my schedule gets better and I get my motivation to run again. Might not get back to it for a while, but I think I'll be running Lamenters Quest again some time in the future after all.

I'll stick around for a couple minutes if anyone has questions. Thanks for playing folks, I hope you all enjoyed it.

Aw man.

There goes chapter master quest.

And i really liked this quest
>>
>>42756361
Did we get paid?

Anyone die? Yes, this was clearly the less important question.

Did we record this on video to show the rookies?
>>
>>42756361
This sucks. This really sucks.
I really enjoyed this quest.
>>
>>42756376
Like I said, I think I'll be coming back to it some day. Might not be for a few months, but I think I will start running LQ again once my schedule's a little more accommodating.

I'm really going to have to set time aside to actually allow for interaction with characters though whenever I do pick it back up. I just realized you guys probably had a longer conversation with the chaos lord than with any of the other characters, and that's completely my fault. Quest definitely needs some touching up, but I do enjoy this. I just need a break from it for a bit.

Governor's probably going to find some way to compensate you since he can't really give you the technology he was originally going to, the space hulk being bombed to oblivion and all that.
Some guardsmen, yes, but nobody major.
Fraid not. Would have been a hell of a video though.
>>42756402
I'm glad to hear that anon. I honestly felt like I was doing a shitty job with LQ, which was part of why I thought about dropping it. This thread reminded me how much I enjoy running it though, so rather than dropping it I'll just be putting it on hiatus for a bit. Maybe I'll pick it back up once the next semester starts, depending on what my class schedule looks like.
