You, Ryouma, an Azure Grimoire originally designed to host a demon called Terumi, have been instructed to wait at the Library branch in the 13th Hierarchical City of Kagutsuchi by Professor Kokonoe Mercury, the Sector Seven scientist and ars magus practitioner who found you. You intend to follow her instructions, but, first, you've decided to wander the district known as Orient Town to get a meal. Along the way, you were interrupted by a feline beastkin who refers to herself as "Tao," whom you gave money. Shortly thereafter, you discovered you're allergic to cats.

"Would you mind staying away from me?" you ask the evidently retarded beastkin. "I'm allergic to cats."

"Okay, green guy! Tao'll be extra careful to not touch you anymore, meow..."

You both approach a restaurant that you figure you ought to get breakfast at. You enter and look for a table that hasn't already been taken.

>Say goodbye to Tao, and have breakfast alone.
>Let Tao have breakfast with you.
>Ask Tao what her story is.

You find a table, telling Tao, "If you want, you can have breakfast with me."

"That's real nice of you, meow..." Tao responds.

After ordering and receiving your meals, Tao remarks, "Mmm... this is yummy! You're good people, green guy!"

"So, what's your story?" you ask her.

"Tao was hoping you'd ask! It's a long and sad tale..." she comments, "which I've just so happened to practice telling in the mirror!"

She clears her throat, reciting, "Tao lives in the Kaka Village. Everybody who lives there looks like Tao! Cool, right?! But the sun doesn't shine in our village anymore."

She dons a depressed face, continuing, "Now our naps totally suck, and it's tough to find food. So, Tao scampered out into the world on a mission to save her friends!"

You finish, "Although it appears that you went hungry and got distracted in the process. What do you plan to do for your village in the long run?"

"Kaka Village needs food money, so Tao decided to become one of those bad-guy-catching thingies, so she can earn tons and tons of mewlah! You know! A wedgie-lante! Or is it vigilantern?"

"I believe you mean 'vigilante,'" you respond.

"Yeah! That thingie! Right now, I'm a vigi-looking for this guy!"

She hands you a poster that's clearly meant to depict Ragna the Bloodedge, the swordsman you saw earlier this morning.

"The super-evil hisshiss-class criminal: Rawrgna the Bloodfridge!" Tao exclaims.

You reflect to yourself how little the image resembles him.

After spending about half an hour at the restaurant, a waitress arrives with a check.

Tao leans back, prepared to doze off. You turn to the waitress, astonished by how much the beastkin consumed. You still have enough Platinum Dollars to pay for the meal; it appears as if Kokonoe left you enough money for a couple of weeks.

>Tell Tao that you saw Ragna earlier today.
>Let Tao pay however much cash you gave her.
>Pay the bill for Tao's meal, as well as your own.

You take some cash out of the wallet you were left with, and put enough on the table to pay for your part of the bill.

You declare, "Tao, you should probably pay for your meal."

Tao looks at the check, interjecting, "Meow?!"

"There's no way Tao can pay for this by herself!" she shouts. "Green guy should've given Tao more money!"

"Don't expect others to pay for your meals. Looks like you're learning the first rule of being a vigilante: always manage your money well," you comment. "After all, if you can't take care of yourself, there's little chance you'll reach your target to begin with."

The waitress makes her way back to the table, exclaiming in a stereotypical Chinese accent, "Excuse me, but did you just say you no can pay?! I almost certain that's what you say!"

You finish, "You really ought to get a job."

Tao argues, "Stop blaming Tao!"

>Teach Tao to provide for herself.
>Pay for Tao's meal, anyways, and tell her to appreciate what you've done for her.
>Dine-and-dash.

"Could we get two separate bills?" you ask, preparing to walk out on Tao.

The waitress appears to take note of your uniform, nervously responding, "Yes, sir."

She returns a couple of minutes later with two checks. Tao puts on a furious expression beneath her mask, or whatever she wears under her hood, as you get up and walk away. You rip up the initial check and throw it in the trash on your way out.

>You've wasted enough time here. Time to get to the Library.
>Ignore Kokonoe's request and go sightseeing elsewhere.

You decide you ought to get to the Library as quickly as possible.

After about an hour of wandering, you find your way to a district called the "Hanging Gardens." From there, you reach Area No.1 of Kagutsuchi: the Novus Orbis Librarium headquarters. None of the soldiers nearby questioned a thing.

As the day passes, you see fewer and fewer soldiers with no explanation whatsoever.

After finding a secluded alcove in front of the NOL cathedral, you hear Kokonoe's voice resonate throughout the air again.

"So, you've finally gotten to the NOL branch. It took you long enough."

You answer, "Just tell me what you want me to do."

Kokonoe responds, "It's more of a matter of what I need you to do. Anyways, keep your eyes out for a First Lieutenant in the 4th Thaumaturgist Squadron. Her name's Noel Vermillion."

You recall the standard uniform for the Praetorian Guard.

"Would you happen to have any other pertinent information I could use to identify her?" you ask.

"She's got blonde hair and green eyes," Kokonoe responds, "and recent intel suggests that she's on a mission to subdue Major Jin Kisaragi."

"...who?" you ask.

"The Hero of Ikaruga," Kokonoe replies, "the guy who ended the Ikaruga Civil War."

"Doesn't ring any bells," you respond.

"Whatever. Just wait in the cathedral until she gets there," Kokonoe orders, "'cause this is happening way more quickly than I'd first anticipated."

>Ask just where Kokonoe expects this Lieutenant to be.
>"I'd appreciate it if you didn't give me smack-talk for doing my job."
>Stay on the lookout for a girl who looks as Kokonoe described.

>Is this going to be a continuous antagonism Koko?
>>
"Where do you expect to find this Lieutenant right now?" you ask.

Kokonoe answers, "We found her at a drawbridge in the 21st district about half an hour ago. That information's useless now, since she left almost immediately. Try to get her to follow you if you see her."

You pace across the cathedral, staying on the lookout for her.

"By the way: are you going to keep discouraging me while I do whatever task you throw my way?" you ask. "I can't tell whether or not your ingratitude's deliberate."

"Sorry," Kokonoe responds. "I'm just a little short on time, and I would've appreciated it if you got there a bit sooner. For all I know, you could've already missed her."

"Got it," you reply.

"I'll call you later," Kokonoe finishes, ending the transmission.

Across the room, you hear a scream from a familiar, unreasonably rough voice.

>Head across the temple, further down the hallway.
>Stay where you are and wait for Lieutenant Vermillion.

If we can call Kokonoe, do and ask if whatever is making Ragna scream like a little bitch is worth investigating.
If not stay put.
>>
You try calling Kokonoe with an intervention ars of your own. You stop as soon as you realize you haven't the slightest idea of where she is. You hear a voice from the side of the hallway from which you entered the cathedral.

"Cap-" a feminine voice asks hesitantly, interrupting itself. "Mr. Hazama?"

You turn around and find a young girl fitting Kokonoe's description to a T.

>"Noel Vermillion?"
>"Quick, follow me; there's no time to explain!"
>"Yes?" [impersonate Hazama]

"Yes, Lieutenant?" you ask politely, as if you've known her for God-knows-how-long.

She stops sounding nervous. "You said you wanted me here as soon as possible."

"Ah; yes. Quick, follow me; there's no time to explain!" you yell, leading her out of the cathedral unquestioned.

Noel follows you to the exit.

You nearly reach the threshold when...

You feel a sudden pain through your chest.

"AGH!" you scream in tremendous pain.

"YOU DUMBASS!" you hear a voice echo across the hall.

"What's going on?!" Noel asks.

You crawl around and get a good look at the assailant. Down the hall, you see a green-haired newcomer in a black suit and a fedora advancing on your position, his eyes wide open. You feel struck by anguish and terror. You try to ignore the unfathomable fear and sorrow this identical stranger incites.

"You stupid sack of shit, you couldn't bring yourself to defy others' orders for ONE goddamn minute! Now, this world, a world I've spent a CENTURY of work on, this world's going straight to hell; there's nothing I can do about it, but, OH, am I going to enjoy hearing you scream!"

"Who... ARE YOU?!" Noel demands.

>"Run!"

"Ah you must be Terumi,Noel now is the time to be running!"
>Run
>>
You identify the weapon Terumi wounded you with as the eighth Nox Nyctores Causality Weapon, Ouroboros; not an armagus any sane person would want to be hit by.

"Ah, you must be Terumi..." you mutter. "Noel, now's the time to start running!"

"Not until I figure out what's going on!" she responds, summoning the third Causality Weapon, Bolverk.

She points the Nox Nyctores at Terumi's head.

"Maybe there's still time..." he tells himself. "Listen, dolly, forget what happened here and get to Ragna in the basement!"

Noel looks reluctant at first, but, then, her arms go limp as Terumi shanks the back of her head with Ouroboros.

Everything fades as you bleed out.
