Become The Dragon Quest 19

You are Countess Kotijah Imidarius, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Last time you investigated the home of Alfer the enchanter and found that his basement was full of mind bottle, mostly blue, but several green, yellow and red ones as well. You headed for the top floor and found the man Alfer had been working on tied up, with several bottles beside him, some changing color from blue to yellow and back. You untied him while trying not to get caught, and then you heard footsteps coming up the stairs.

Two men walked into the room who you knocked out and interrogated, quickly learning that Alfer had an accomplice who helped him develop the bottles and who takes them away to be disposed of. While trying to put the pieces together you heard someone at the door, likely Doctor Bella Light, the other half of the operation. You knocked Alfer out again to keep him from calling for help, and then watched as his unconscious body reacted to the commands of the person downstairs.

Blight erupted from his chest, and you tried to firesing to keep it from giving you away as it seeped towards the door, but to no avail. As Dr B. Light (You hate necromancers so much) approached and called to you, you saw Sena start to lose her control. You prepared to fight whoever was out there, and for good measure decided to open a bottle.
>>
The next thing you remember is waking up in the street in the middle of the night, covered in blood. You retraced your steps and found Alfer dead, Sena missing and signs that the doctor was gone, with Gil and Kat in pursuit. You gathered your things and got a frantic message from Cenere as you followed after them. The Order of Fire is scattered, and you don't have any backup to help you. You also learned that the mind bottles are actually a special necromantic magic item that turns hatred and soul fragments into blight.

You tracked down the carriage and found distraught Gil trying to assemble smoke bombs for raiding a nearby house. He told you that the doctor was controlling Sena like a puppet, that Kat got her arm broken, and that upon trying to sneak inside the first time a creature grabbed Kat and took her away. You helped him complete the smoke bombs and sneak past the creature at the door.

Now you're inside. You managed to use a smoke bomb to get past some zombies and explored two rooms, finding some magic books and some sort of magic item in a desk that you're coming back for. You know that down below there's a ton of magic, as well as a concentrated source up above in the attic.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

You grab a few of the enchanted tomes. They look like they should be heavy, but they're actually pretty light, and you suspect that's part of the enchantment. They're field guides of things like magical auras, natural magical phenomena and spell classification. Gil grabs a book and carefully slips it into his pack, looking embarrassed. You decide not to question it.

Time to decide between up and down. You could also split up to cover more ground.

You whisper to Gil that you're going to check out the attic and warn him to stay here for now and cover you. He nods a bit.

"I'll make sure the zombies stay distracted."

You sneak over to the stairs and head up to find a door at the top. There's a soft green glow behind it, and when you push open the door you find Sena strapped to a table. There's a large metal rod bolted to the table, connected to some sort of device that pokes through the roof. You hear a crackling, fizzing noise and Sena screams silently, a burst of white energy flowing out of her, up the rod and out through the roof. Her eyes glow a deeper, darker red for a moment before returning to the bright red they were before. She doesn't even seem to register your presence.

So, anyone considered ridding Sena of the blight problem when we're done with this? She can be useful without it, considering her sneaking skills.
>>
>>42710334
Yup, what I was thinking, provided she lives through this and it hasn't gone so far as to be permanent.
>>
>>42710334
I think it was permanent as soon as we gave her the potion to balance her out instead of the potion to cure the blight, but if it's not, maybe. I'm not sure she'd want that even after this experience, though.
>>
>>42710496
>>42710396
I hadn't considered it being permanent. That's shitty.

Hopefully we can do something, or we'll have to leave her with the gang back at secret base or whatever because miss necrofuck here can command her.

Also, the machine is totally removing the day magic shit from her, if you didn't get that.
>>
>>42710536
Given that necromancers are the greatest enemy with both groups and there are another two running around, not counting Lamiring, sending her to the Order just sounds like a way to get her killed offscreen. Plus, the Order had to abandon their base and are now on the run, so meeting up with them would be difficult, time-consuming and dangerous.

Our time would be better spent trying to find something in this place that would let us protect Sena from blight manipulation, if that is what this is and not a more standard kind of mind rape.
>>
You don't know precisely how this machine operates, or what the underlying principles are, but you've seen enough magic and know enough about Sena to guess what's happening. You decide that since Sena seems to be struggling to keep herself balanced, you may as well help her out, and you strike the metal rod as hard as you can with your sword, severing it from the device on the roof cleanly. The next pulse makes Sena writhe, but the white magic hits the place where you cut the post and bounces right back down to her. Sena's eyes start to revert from red back to their normal color and she looks at you.

"H-Help me..."

You nod.

"Stay with me, Sena..."

You strike the table hard, this time trying to crack is around the restraints so you can free her. Something fizzles and crackles a bit the moment you break the table, and Sena sits upright with a gasp, panting heavily, her eyes turning back to normal and her fangs vanishing. She clings to you tightly and shakes.

"K-Kotijah..."

You stroke her back gently.

"Don't worry... We're going to get you out of here... First we need to find Kat though. Think you can walk?"

You feel a sudden ache course through your body before Sena presses her hands to her legs. There's a soft white glow and she hops off the table.

"S-Sorry, I just... I needed to be sure."

It doesn't hurt too bad, but you do wish she had just asked. Still, she's scared out of her mind so you can hardly blame her.

>>
>>42710835
I don't want Sena on her own, but I don't want her in here. Gil wouldn't want to leave before we get Kat, which is understandable.

What do you guys think?
>>
>>42710920
Well, if no one wants to talk, I'll second this >>42710910, I guess.
>>
You lead Sena over to the door.

“Think you can shake off whatever that necromancer was doing to you?”

Sena nods slightly.

“I... I think so... I started getting rebellious and she put me up here to... to... shatter my soul...”

You nod and pull her in for another embrace.

“See? You're tough, Sena. I don't think anyone else could have held out as long as you did.”

Sena clings to you tightly.

“I knew you'd come and save me... so I didn't lose hope...”

She smiles at you and you gently tussle her hair.

“Come on then. Let's go turn the tables on this necromancer, save Kat and burn this place to the ground.”

Sena smiles slightly and gives you a nod. She pulls a dagger from her belt, and you head downstairs with her slowly. The zombies are still milling about, confused, but all of them have black gunk over their eyes, and they're bumbling about blindly. Gil is in the middle of the room looking pleased with himself. You hear his voice by the door, and the zombies move towards the sound as he creeps over to you.

“Blind zombies rely on hearing, but I've been practicing throwing my voice a bit... It's the ones that can see that don't fall for it, interestingly...”

He looks at Sena for a moment, then at you, and gives a small nod before hugging Sena tightly until she lets out a soft squeak.

“Gil...! You're crushing me...!”

He nods a little.

“Feel the weight of my brotherly love. Be smothered by it. I'm just so glad you're safe...”

Sena slips out of his grasp and sticks her tongue out at him, and Gil gives you a smile.

“So... No sign of Kat up there...? Then I guess it's down we go after all...”

You nod and move with him over to the stairs. The zombies are stumbling out the door and you can hear the creature outside attacking them one by one. You've probably lost the element of surprise, but maybe your way out just got a little easier.

You slip downstairs with Gil and Sena, smoke bombs at the ready. You can hear voices from below, and one of them sounds a little like Kat. The other you don't quite recognize; feminine, but not the voice of the doctor. The stairs lead you to a small landing, and from there you can see the chamber below. It's all worked stone, fairly recent construction. Maybe thirty feet from the platform you're on is the chamber floor, but it's at least a good hundred feet in diameter. There's a central platform and a stone walkway that forms a ring around it, and in the space between is a churning black liquid, gallons and gallons of blight frothing a foot or two below the edge of the platform.

At the center of the platform stands Kat, hunched over a worktable, and behind her is a young woman in a black gown. You can see seams along her flesh, and stitch marks as though she had sewn her arms and legs onto herself, or slipped them on like a change of clothes. When you squint a bit you can see similar marks along her neck, running down to her chest and up along the back of her neck to the top of her head. She smiles sweetly at Kat.

“I don't really care about that~”

“It hurts... Please, just give me five minutes to rest, my arm hurts so much...”

“We can do this my way or the hard way. If you want to keep your arm so bad then work through the pain. Otherwise I'll just cut it off and replace it~”

“I... Alright... Just, please don't hurt Sena anymore...”

“Once you finish showing me how you made that potion, neither of you has to suffer any longer. I just want to see what you stumbled upon~”

“...My friends are coming for me... If you kill me... they'll destroy you.”
>>
“Oh my~ Well, if they make it past Tickles, I'll be sure to give them a warm welcome~ But don't worry. I won't kill you. You're too valuable. The blight will ruin your cleverness, but once I have the recipe I can just have you follow my directions like a good girl~ I did that to Alfer and he was wonderfully obedient after that, even if I ruined the part of him that helped me make those lovely bottles...~”

Kat falls silent, mixing and grinding slowly, keeping her pace even and measured, gritting her teeth through the pain.

You activate your sight and almost blind yourself from how much magic is in the air. You manage to hold your gaze long enough to note a few things. Most of the magic down there isn't in the blight, it's in the doctor. The same type of magic is in both, but it's much, much denser in the doctor, mainly in her skeleton and almost leaking out into the flesh she's "wearing". Either her skeleton is solid blight, or it's so soaked in it that it may as well be.

>>
I'm gonna crash for a bit while you guys discuss your options and formulate a plan. I will tell you now there good ideas, bad ideas, ideas that will get everyone killed, and variables you're not considering.
>>
>>42713267
One such variable is the big monster outside. We can't escape without it cutting us off. We need to tank out the necromancer fast or else she'll be dropping her undead on us, as well as whatever tricks her body holds.
>>
>>42713267
Dare I ask we use our new books now that we got an eyeful?

Magical auras, natural magical phenomena and spell classification.
>>
>>42713398
This does not seem like the appropriate time to start leafing through tomes.
>>
>>42713407
Not the entire thing.

Just match up the description of her aura, look how it relates to magical phenomenon and the spell classification and how to neutralize it.

I dunno, but its something to consider.
>>
>>42713442
That'd take a lot of reading, and lead us tongetbdiscovered or for her to break Kat.
>>
>>42713442
I'm not expecting these books to be the kind of thing where you can easily and quickly pinpoint very specific information in them.
>>
Okay...

Have Gil hit her with blinding agent, get Kat and Sena away from necro Looney. Kot meanwhiles sings her sword aflame and cleaves her down the middle !ike a badass.
>>
>>42713023
>>Surprise attack, firesong
Fuck getting close to that shit. Dump SP now.
>>
>>42713867
You realize that Kat is standing right next to her, right?
>>
>>42713918
Yes, but getting up on her and carving her ass up will get all that blight up on us.
>>
>>42713972
Fire arrow time?
>>
>>42713972
There's only a few relatively contained pools of blight near the center, I think. Just avoid falling into that instead of immolating the person we're here to save. If you mean the blight that's in the woman, our sword can burst into dragonfire, which tends to destroy blight, so backsplash isn't as big of a fear.
>>
>>42713918
Although fire singing does follow a direction. It cauterized Sena's arm for example. I don't think it'll harm Kat. It might just go straight for the blight.
>>
Firesinging with SP on the sword seems like a good idea, it'd make us able to attack with our current greatest stat and also make sure we do real damage to her.
>>
>>42714553
It's possible, but we don't have a huge degree of experience with exactly how it works. It seems like an unnecessary risk, especially since the chance of it actually killing her is really low and it burns a highly limited resource on a single attack.

>>42715218
Our sword can burst into dragonfire with 1 SP without having to firesing as one of it's abilities, IIRC. Probably better to use that feature instead of risking a spirit roll.

It's a good idea if we can spare the SP, but I don't know what our total is sitting at right now, and we need at least 1 in reserve in order to fly, I think, although it's possible that was just flavor text or talking about max SP instead of current.
>>
>>42715243
Would using the swords own fire and our own firesing make it stronger? If we don't test that here we should probably test it some other time.
>>
Whatever we do we cant let her get to her blight, we need to cut her off from it. Last thing we need is an even more suped up necromancer
>>
>>42715362
Oh and we have to kill her too, its really risky but we can't risk the potion knowledge getting out.
>>
>>42715271
It could conceivably amplify the effect, but it'd take a big chunk out of our reserves, even at full. Possibly all of it depending on if we've still been carrying the sword in the gloves or if we've been keeping it out in the open after leaving the city.
>>
>>42715376
Probably shouldn't test it now then, considering we might need some later in the fight or when we're getting out. It would still be a good thing to find out later, though.
>>
>>42715376
You got a sheath for your sword before you left the secret base and haven't needed to use the gloves since then, but you did spend 1 SP trying to burn the blight that came out of Alfer
>>
>>42715271
The sword relies on a crystal in the hilt. Without ambient magical energy, most magic items of that type rely on the user putting energy into them. Small items with low impact, like the earrings, take a very minimal amount of energy and can be fueled by the environment. The sword won't activate without spending SP here.
>>

You grab your sword and turn to Gil, about to explain your plan to him, when you see the look in his eye. There's anger there, raw and unfocused. His hands are shaking. He rises suddenly and yells.

“Keep your hands off of her!”

Kat and the doctor both look at him, and he knocks an arrow with a blue bottle on the end. Kat immediately scrambles over the table she's working at, muttering “Shit shit shit!” again and again as Gil fires. The bottle explodes, knocking the doctor back a bit and covering her in blue sludge that starts to harden and freeze, covering her in ice. The ice begins to creak and crack almost immediately, tendrils of black fluid poking through the crevices. You turn to Sena instead, since at least she's not in a rage.

“Grab Kat, I'll keep her busy. Fighting retreat.”

Sena nods and sprints down the stairs to the platform while you jump down, raising your sword high and igniting it. You land right as the doctor breaks the ice apart to free herself. Half her face is gone, exposing the black bones underneath. She glares at you.

“I /liked/ that face!”

You swing your sword down hard, cutting across her torso and knocking her backwards a bit.

“That's nice. I like my friends.”

The doctor lets out a howl of pain, and you see, just for a moment, her exposed skull liquefy a bit. A walking, talking mass of blight. Yep, definitely can't let that touch the rest of it. The doctor's hand twitches, and black claws force their way through her fingertips. She lunges at you with a mad laugh, trying to claw at you.

You skirt around the attack, dashing behind her to take advantage of her blind spot. Sena grabs Kat by her good arm and pulls her to her feet, dragging her to the stairs a bit as Kat tries to regain her footing. The doctor ignores you for a moment and raises a hand, reaching out at Sena and grasping at the air. Sena stumbles and hits the wall, screaming in agony, her eyes bright red. Gil lets another arrow fly, this one causing the doctor to burst into flames for a moment, scorching away the remainder of her flesh and leaving only the skeleton. Her eyes are on Gil, not you, but for some reason you feel like you're the one she's watching carefully.

You see her bones ripple slightly before they expand, forming black flesh that slowly pales, long black hair, and a flowing, lacy dress covered in white ribbons and bows. Claws grow from her other hand and she claps her hands together with a giggle, her head spinning around to face you.

“Oh, I haven't had a chance to have real fun in ages! Hit me again! No holding back this time~ I want to see you fight for real! Do you want another bottle?~”

The bottle full of anger and fermenting soul fragments that affected you... You don't even want to think about what consequences there might be for that one, but maybe finding a priest to check you out should be a priority at some point, or Sena if it's not too much beyond her.

>>42718494
She might not know that we can breathe fire though, if we didn't use that during our rage, but considering we didn't feel that our throat hurt, she might not know and thinks we could get close for her to try something.

>>
>>42718612
They'd probably just get killed by the monster if your theory is right and it is coming here.

It looks like the general consensus is to use the firesong here. Keep in mind that unless you have SP in your pool, you won't be able to fly, so you'll have to take the stairs.

Not seeing any mention of firesong in the second vote. Discussion isn't votes.

It's still on fire. It'll last until it goes out. There's a chance it might burn out with each strike.

Dunno, I didn't write the vote, but I think it'd be mentioned a little more explicitly if he wanted to consume an incredibly limited resource that will make the other half of the vote a dozen times harder. Maybe he thought we still had some smoke bombs on hand?

She keeps her eyes on you as you circle around her, head spinning to follow your movements. You head over to the table Kat climbed across, moving away from the stairs bit by bit and pretending that you're just looking for a good angle to strike from. When you reach the table you can see Kat and Sena helping each other up the stairs bit by bit. The instant the doctor follows your gaze and spots them you start your ingenious new attack.

You grab the table by the leg and whip it around at her, spinning with it as you launch it and giving it a twist so that the table top obscures you from her view. You turn your sword in your hands as the table flies and focus. Your father had used the sword to rocket at Lamiring for a finishing blow, hadn't he? You close your eyes, take a deep breath, and push with your magic, just enough to get the flames to roar, charging at her full speed, wings flapping and sword pushing you along.

The doctor cleaves through the table, laughing at what to her must have seemed a pathetic attack. Her eyes go wide as you point the blade at her, ramming it to the hilt through her chest, flame pouring out of the wound and engulfing her. You fuel the flames once more, this time rocketing backwards a bit to prevent getting stuck as the wound closes. She shrieks, clawing at the flames to put them out, grinning as her flesh melts into black goo. When the fire dies her body is half-melted, but slowly reforming.

“Oh, how lovely! A clever one! You remind me of someone... Do you know Ildareth?~”

Sena and Kat have reached the top of the stairs, and Gil is helping them up from the platform to the ground floor.

You ready your sword.

“You could say that.”

You charge in for another attack, this time aiming to break her apart further and stop her from reforming fully. You just need a little more time, and if you can keep up your assault you might be able to wear her down. Your sword flares brightly at the apex of your attack and the doctor reels from the blow, stumbling backwards a little more, one of her arms falling off her melting body.

“Oopsie~ Looks like I've got a little problem on my hand...~ Let me change into something more comfortable...~”

She starts to melt further, her whole form turning into goo that slowly starts to trickle towards the edge of the platform. Blight is rising up on that side, creeping along the stone towards her. Crap. A quick glance tells you that Gil, Sena and Kat are nowhere in sight, and your sword is starting to sputter a bit. You might get one last strike out of it before the fire dies down, but if it's not enough you might have a much bigger problem to deal with.

You move in for one last strike, trying to keep the flame going on your sword just a little longer. You spring up into the air and slam down hard, the flame dying as you split the doctor into two puddles of goo. What remains of her wobbles and collapses, into a steaming black puddle of liquid, but the blight continues to rise up towards her, and you can see the tendrils reaching for the puddle seem to be turning into faces. You've done what you can here, and you don't have the divine magic necessary to properly finish the fight, but at least you've ensured your friends got out safely. Now it's time for you to do the same.

You take flight and reach the platform, casting one last look at the scene below you. The black fluid of the doctor's body flows into the blight, and you can see them mixing, writhing and undulating. Black bones of various sizes, some tiny and some enormous, start to protrude from the mass of liquid, but they melt before they fully form like she can't control that much blight all at once. No giant blight skeletons today, though you dread to imagine what'll happen once she gets out of here.

You head for the surface and find Gil, Kat and Sena crouched by the door. You can see the blight monster outside, hands reaching through the door as it writhes and screams, unable to pull itself through the entrance to get to them or its mistress. Gil looks over at you questioningly, and you shake your head a bit.

“Let's deal with this one and get out of here...”

You look at the monster for a moment, then shake your head. Fighting through here would be a disaster if it touched even one person for an instant. It's too risky, you decide, so you head for the stairs leading up.

“This way, we can punch a hole in the roof and get out.”

You flap your wings for emphasis, and everyone nods. Gil scoops Kat up in his arms and carries her to the stairs, and Sena hops onto your back, clinging tightly as you make a run for it. You hear wood splinting behind you, and you don't need to look back to tell that “Tickles” is starting to force its way into the house. When you reach the attic Gil drags the remains of the table Sena had been on over to the stairs, covering them up.

“So, plan?”

You walk over to a wall and poke it with your sword. The old wood creaks a little bit and you breathe, striking firmly with the flat of the blade and knocking a chunk out of it.

“Up, onto the roof, and from there we'll glide out of here. Sena, I'll carry you in my arms. Kat, Gil, grab my legs and hold tight.”

Kat gestures to her broken arm and clears her throat.

“...Alright, I'll carry Kat, and... You know what, we'll make it work somehow.”

Kat smirks at you.

“I'm just pulling your leg. Eh? Eh?”

Gil facepalms.

“We're being chased by a horrifying necromantic creature that's going to kill us all if we don't get out, and you're making puns.”

Kat kisses him on the cheek.

“It's the purrfect opurrtunity, don't you agree? I mean, it might give some people paws for thought, but...~”

Gil punches the wall next to where you struck it.

“I love you, sweetie, but can we get out of here first?”

Kat shrugs.

“Spoilsport~”

Sena looks at them for a moment, then at you.

“If you and Taret end up together, please don't end up like them...”

You sheathe your sword and shrug a bit.

“I'll try, but I can't make any promises about Taret.”
>>
Sena nods a little bit and follows Gil as he exits through the hole, the pair climbing up to the roof. Kat follows behind, with Gil helping her along, and you spread your wings and fly up to join them. You hover next to the group and Gil nods slightly.

“Alright... Kat in your arms, right? And then Sena and I will... figure something out.”

You nod and land, gently picking Kat up. You give your wings a test. You can glide, and maybe hover, but flight like this will be difficult until you've gotten more practice with your magic. You turn and face the carriage, and flap as hard as you can as Gil and Sena grab hold. They run along the roof with you and jump, and you hold your wings out to glide along towards the carriage. You can see the monster below you, writhing in the doorway as it tries to force its bulk inside, before suddenly withdrawing and turning slowly to face you. You swallow briefly, angling your wings a bit to speed up your descent and gain momentum. The creature lets out a shriek, its body contracting and widening, and it lobs a mass of blight in your direction, missing by inches.

You struggle with the weight a little bit, your wings starting to strain, but you manage to stay aloft and on course. The creature winds up another shot, but this time you're ready for it. You twist in the air, turning to the side and diving slightly before curving back on course again. Gil adjusts his hold a bit on your leg, fumbling for something in his pocket.

"Everyone, deep breath, on my mark!"

He cracks the bottle against the sole of your boot.

"Now!"

There's a sudden heavy plume of smoke, and another blast of blight tears through it just above your head. Gil chuckles softly.

"Take that..."

Kat looks starry eyed, grinning at Gil.

"Aww... you remembered..."

Gil rolls his eye.

"How could I forget... You still owe me a new shirt from that."

You land slowly, giving Gil and Sena a chance to find their footing and run to the carriage. You drop down by the door and help them load Kat inside, and you can hear her complaining about what Gil did to her supplies as you close the door. You just hope the wild ride doesn't end with a sudden bump sending chemicals everywhere and causing an explosion. You get into the driver's seat, grab the reins tightly, and hope. You kick the brake and the horses immediately take off, running back to the road at top speed, the carriage shaking violently the whole way.

You do your best to just cling to the reins, watching the countryside pass you by. When the horses get back onto the road the ride is much smoother, but no less frenetic, and you're constantly being tossed about every time there's even the smallest turn. You manage to stay on the carriage, but when the horses finally tire and slow you're covered in bruises and bumps from the trip. With a groan you climb down and check the door, opening it slowly. Gil's hair has turned green, Sena looks like someone threw flour all over her, and Kat is just calming smoking her pipe with one hand despite the sudden appearance of gills on her neck. She looks at you, waves a bit, and goes back to her pipe.

Now would probably be a good time to make camp while Kat sorts this mess out.

You lead the horses to the side of the road and carefully unpack the supplies from the carriage to make camp for the night. You're pretty sure that Kat will have things straightened out soon enough, and you leave her to it for the moment, taking some time to yourself. Allegiset has been quiet the past few nights and you don't expect that to change tonight, but something tells you to expect a visit from him anyway. You figured out what the problem at the village was, but there are probably other villages just like it elsewhere, and you didn't get rid of the doctor so much as delayed her plans a bit. If Cenere is to be believed there are two other necromancers of similar power as well, likely putting their plans into motion in other parts of the kingdom.

What you really need is a way to deal with the necromancers properly, and that might have to involve some sort of divine magic. The White Blade should do the trick, but there's only one of those and far more people you need to keep safe. It would probably be worthwhile to get Sena some proper training in divine magic of both sorts, both for healing and to look for weaknesses in necromancy. You decide to ask the next church you find about divine magic in general, just to cover all your bases, as well as find out about how they fight the undead themselves.

The stars look different tonight. In your home town they looked one way, and in the capitol they were mostly the same, but lately it feels like the further east you go, the more you're stepping into another world. Mostly it's the little things, plants you don't recognize, clothing styles, that sort of thing. You didn't expect the sky itself to change though, and you're not really sure why it is. You decide to turn in for the night.

You find yourself before Allegiset as you pass out. The instant your eyes closed he appeared before you, as proud and fierce as ever. He circles around you slowly as though appraising you.

“You've been busy again. Risking your life for others, and where did it get you? You lost your head, almost lost your weapon, and almost lost your comrades. What did you gain from it?”

You draw a slow breath.

“Knowledge. I know what that necromancer is up to now. I can find a way to stop her. She'll get in my way so I have to burn her to ash, right?”

Allegiset moves before you and grins.

“Correct. All who stand in your way must kneel or die. That is our way.”

You nod a little.

“So is that all you brought me here for?”

He shakes his head slightly.

“I'm rather impressed with that little trick you pulled. You copied your father's move, but obscuring her sight first to ensure a clean hit? Splendid. I particularly liked how you stood and fought until you knew you had to give up. You didn't back down. For that I am grateful. I dislike the thought of grooming a coward as my heir. So tell me, which boon do you desire?”

Side note to whoever archived the last thread, you put the wrong number. You are bad and you should feel bad. Now there will be two threads that are #19 and I don't know how to fix this problem. Hopefully one of you guys knows.

Also:
1 Strength
2 Wound slot
3 Ask about a blessing/curse
>>

Literally popped up when it updated after my post.

3 for plus 1 strength
2 for wounds
2 for blessings/curses.
>>
>>42728232
I was rolling for which one to go with. Don't worry, asking about doesn't mean taking. Going with the strength buff though, since that was the most popular choice.

“...Those blessings and curses from last time... Those are still open, right? I could just take one?”

Allegiset nods slowly.

“If you truly desire it, yes, though I can't imagine you'll want another one so soon. You've adjusted well so far, but when the curse strikes you will likely suffer greatly.”

You nod a little bit in return and mull your choices over.

“Strength has worked out pretty well so far. Can you make me stronger?”

Allegiset laughs a bit and moves closer.

“You are approaching the limit of that body, daughter. If I make you stronger I will need to awaken other aspects of your being before I can continue to bolster your strength. But I can do it.”

You feel fire in your veins, your muscles tensing slightly and swelling a bit before returning to normal again. Dragon muscle, you realize. Where once was mere human flesh, now under your skin you can feel the flow of magic reinforcing your entire being. No wonder dragons can carry such heavy loads, their entire being is packed with magic.

-

Strength increased to 4!

-

Allegiset admires you for a moment as though regarding his work.

“Hmm, yes... With that you might be able to handle being blighted, albeit in small amounts. Blight is destruction, but within you now is something capable of offering resistance. You should still avoid it whenever you can, but a single blighted wound won't be the death of you.”

“What can you tell me about that? About blight, and necromancers?”

Allegiset turns away from you.

“Blight is a natural result of the existence of humanity. Divine magic and necromancy stem from the Essence, a form of energy which exists across the whole of the world. It comes together and drifts apart, but it only ever pools into something cohesive within a human being. Humans once believed that the soul existed even after death, that they would go on to another world, an afterlife, but they are scattered to the wind like everything else.

The things that compose a dragon return to the world when they die, as it is with all things, but humans like to pretend they are different in that way. Instead they are a plague. The existence of the soul brings only destruction. For when a human is consumed with pain when they die, that soul rots into blight. Every drop of blight within the world is Essence that cannot be replenished. Only by purifying and destroying blight can it be returned to the world, where it belongs so that living things can prosper.

Necromancers, whether born with this desire or otherwise, wish to turn all Essence into blight, blight that they can control, blight that they can enslave. So long as you retain your humanity you can be corrupted, broken by it, eroded away by the blackness. So long as you have a soul you have weakness.”

You mull his response over for a moment.

“So what is the soul then?”

Allegiset turns to face you, chuckling quietly and sighing.
>>
“Imagine a cup, a stone and water. The cup is the body, the stone is the mind and the water is Essence. You put the stone in the cup and you can fill it with water all you like, but a single hole at the bottom and it flows out again. That is how most living things are. Human minds are sand. Pour water into sand and it makes damp sand, the water clinging to the dry grains. The Essence fills the body, is shaped by the mind, but in humans the Essence is trapped, contained, until it becomes a reflection of the mind. That is the soul. An accident of the broken minds of men.”

Well that was pretty harsh. Still, he has a point.

>Ask about something else
>That's all for now
>Other (write-in)
>>
>>42728920
So how does one purify essence? What is Divine magic then?
>>
"So how do I go about destroying blight? And what does that make divine magic?"

Allegiset looks a little amused by your questions.

"Blight is corruption. Destruction. It can poison water. It can erode earth. It can even foul the air. There is one thing it cannot corrupt. Fire. With fire like mine it is easy. Yours will need some practice. Although... Let me answer your other question first. Divine magic and necromancy are fueled by belief and arrogance, by the mind of a human shaping the Essence within themselves. That's all there is to it. The strength of their will, their belief, is essential to the strength of their spells. You are in a unique position. You possess a soul, and therefore the ability to manipulate Essence to a degree. You may be able to combine fire with divine magic, if you possess the required mindset to do so."

Holy fire, huh? Now there's an idea you hadn't considered.

You decide to leave it at that, and Allegiset takes your silence as a desire for dismissal.

"Until next time, daughter."

He fades into fire, and you slowly awaken to the feeling of weight on your chest. Sena is on top of you, curled up and gnawing at your shoulder gently. She seems like she's fast asleep.

It's easily morning now, and Gil and Kat are sitting by a fire. Gil seems back to normal, and even lost the eye patch, while Kat is still nursing her broken arm. You gently shake Sena awake and sit up, stretching slowly. You need to figure out a game plan for the road ahead.

-

List your objectives. Your ultimate goal for this trip is still to find the White Blade, but I'm curious to see what else people want to try to do on the way and what they want to prioritize.
>>
>>42729810
Well.

Religious empowerment for everyone?
Make sure our second run in with a necromancer is vastly different.

Travel church to church to find along the way as we heal.

We should talk to everyone personally. Deal with what happened and heal emotionally.
>>
>>42729810
Bust up any Necromantic operations as we go. Warn off any villages not already bottling of it.

Get Sena, Gil and KAt's alchemical complications.

Get Kat healed up

Get Sena better balanced and much tankier against necromancy, Mostly by buffing divine until she can ward herself and Necromancy to control herself.

Find more cool magic shit, learn more cool magic shit
>>
>>42730029
Everyone reads magic books. Then we have magic book club meetings.
>>
>>42729810
Try combining the sword's ability to ignite itself and our ability to use our firesong to ignite it at some point, see if it has an amplifying effect or if it's just redundant.
>>
>>42729996
Do you mean everyone take a level in cleric, or everyone have some kind of divine thing they can do or trick they can call upon?

Grammar

Yay character driven story arcs.
>>
>>42730029
Something to do in every town as you go then.

Grammar. Also they're fine now. Mostly.

Yeah, that's probably high priority.

Well, now you know the secret to divine magic. Again. Maybe that'll help.

Always handy.
>>
>>42730111
Schoolgirl Sena and Sexy Librarian Kat hosting book club meetings is something I didn't know I wanted until now. But seriously, those books are probably helpful. If nothing else you'll finally know what your sight is actually revealing to you.
>>
>>42730262
I feel like we touched on that one before. Or at the very least we should if we haven't already. We'll get to that.
>>
>>42730372
>Yeah, that's probably high priority.
Sena or kat have any ideas on how to do it since they both heal?
>>
>>42730495
Sena doesn't know how to mend broken bones. Kat could try mixing up a bone mending potion but that might take time to develop
>>
>>42730325
Paladin Kot
Cleric Gil
Priestess Sena
Miko Kat

A full team of white mages.
>>
>>42730532
Any churches nearby?
>>
>>42730551
You didn't see one in Ditio and you're unsure where the next town would be. Probably down the road, maybe a day, maybe weeks.
>>
>>42729996
>Religious empowerment for everyone?
IIRC, you just need belief in *something* to fuel spirit magic, whether it's divine or necromancy, it doesn't have to be religion.

Belief in the power of oneself works better for dragons according to Allegiset, and religion is annoying because it limits power according to one's rank in the hierarchy. For Sena we could probably pull some "believe in the me that believes in you" bullshit due to her social links with Kot if she can't use her own self-confidence.
>>
>>42730534
That would make a fun request in a draw thread once I finish gathering reference pictures I'm happy with.
>>
>>42730574
Indeed. Divine magic is fueled by belief. Necromancers are so earth-shatteringly arrogant that their inability to conceive a world in which they fail actually makes them succeed.

Side note, isn't it curious that Allegiset mentioned belief in yourself as a path to power a while ago, and then spoke of divine magic like you need a soul to do it?
>>
>>42730637
I assumed you were just contradicting yourself because you forgot, or because that setting element wasn't existent yet.
>>
>>42730637
Divine Dragon Faith?

Ancestral worship is a thing.
>>
>>42730637
Allegiset was once human too wasn't he?
>>
>>42730663
Nope. The magic system is mostly fleshed out at this point. Allegiset either lied about something or didn't tell the whole truth.

And he will always claim the second.
>>
>>42730682
Full circle! Eh, I dunno, that feels like it would be kinda cliche. At the same time though, the world is a cycle, so it isn't outside the realm of possibility
>>
Well, I'm off to sleep. Keep your input coming, it gives me stuff to draw on. Until next time!
>>
>>42730868
You know what'd be great? Names sword techniques and fire techniques.
>>
>>42730868
What happened to the books we asked Kat to restore? I might've missed it. If so ignore this part.

How about we practice carrying people while flying, if we have time? Might be useful in other situations.
>>
>>42730868
We should probably practice flying better along the way, also see those boks that we tok about magic. Maybe practice our singing as well. Trying to develop some more claw fighting techniques would also be good for us.
>>
Thread resumes in 30 minutes or so.

Absolute machine.
>>
>>42735724
I mean, I could take a day off, but... wait, it's been over a month of just writing every single day. This quest has been alive for the better part of a month. To celebrate this moment properly, instead of the usual content I'm going to write a story. This thread is mostly finished anyway, we're pretty close to the bump limit, so for the rest of it I'll do a Q&A and we'll kick off the next thread with the story I write today.

Speaking of which, any suggestions as to what I should write? I've got plenty of ideas, but this wouldn't be collaborative storytelling without collaboration
>>

>>
>>42736284
It's an old joke about a guy complaining that he got fired for look at explicit content of 4chan then another guy bragged he got promoted in his job because the old guy got fired.
>>
>>42736322
Neat.
>>
Alright, I've got two stories roughed out. The story of how Kotijah's parents first met, and the story of their fight and the resulting fallout. I've also got half of a story about Gil and Kat roughed out. Productivity!

Side note, after looking back over it, I've decided to swear off writing any more of the romance stuff while I'm at work. It was too heavy handed, and in hindsight, yes, Kat and Sena would be that pushy about things, but it didn't make for great storytelling at times. I shall strive to do better.
>>
>>42738685
You know, you can always kill Tarret. Or make him seduced by Dr. B.

Does those blight-berserk potions enhance physical capability? And what about spirit? What would happen if we gave berserk potion to Sena? Can we multiclass her to healer/berserk?
>>
>>42738685
Parents sound fun. Now that i think about it its kind of a shame we didn't talk with mom more after she finally got her voice back.

Glad to hear that.
It probably would have been fine they way you did it all if they had already been together or something. at that point it was just a bit too soon and too often.

Would we have met more potential romance partners or would tarret have been it?
>>
>>42739991
I could, but I have... other plans.

You killed a man and destroyed his home in a blind fury when used that bottle, so yeah, it enhances physical capability. The trouble is making sure that anger stays pointed in the right direction.
>>
>>42740262
Natural beserking a thing?

Bite our tongue and just snikt snikt bub bub?
>>
>>42740144
There'll be chances later, assuming she doesn't get captured and executed or something.

Yeah... part of it was perception. I didn't see the forest for the trees. I was also trying to portray Sena and Kat meddling and pushing him on you, which didn't become obvious until the end, and that soured it a bit too.

I'm not done with romance in this quest, but I'm going to approach it more intelligently and with more planning from here on. There may be other romantic interests later. Who knows.
>>
>>42740309
I could see it being a thing but I'm not sure how to introduce such a mechanic. If people decide it's worth pursuing then I'll figure it out.
