Portia's face is small and round. Well, it is a child's face. Wearing a clean white shirt, he's holding to the edge of the trapdoor.

After letting go, he seems to glide towards the opening, and then the rest of his body comes into view.

Ah, it's a spider tribe child. Its body its surprisingly cute for a spider. It looks soft and fluffy, covered with white and gold, short hair.

So, that is why he had no problem getting up there without a stair. No, rather, there was never a need for stairs in the first place, and that is why the doors are so wide in many houses.

Well, it is still a child. Barely older than 4 years old or so? probably. Portia has a cute face and black eyes, with short, fluffy hair and pigtails. Yeah, let's not be racists just because of the spider half... well, let's try.

"Come on, let's go"
"And you will look for mommy?"
"Yes, I promise"

Of course, he's quite surprised when we summon our dragon, but doesn't seem afraid of heights. Well, I guess that when you have that many legs to stick to it, you aren't really afraid to fall off the mount.

"Oh, a survivor!" -Okaba observes with a smile of relief when he sees you and Portia come aboad
"Ah!" -Portia is quite scared of the prince, and hides behind you. It looks like a bear trying to hide behind a tree.

Right, Okaba's race and portia's race have been at war for a long time, right?

"Don't worry Portia, he's a friend, and very nice to children"

Going back down into the mining town, we explore the area rather thoroughly, but noone else seems to have made it.

Once we are convinced that it is safe, we call for the others, and they lower the ship enough for further search and rescue groups to go out.

In total, they rescue two more spider tribe folk, one human, and a majin slave (who is obviously freed). So, counting portia, there were 5 survivors in total, all of them having hidden in tall places which were not accessible with ease.

Well, if the drones lose any special abilities they had, they couldnt climb or fly after their prey. This should help us develop emergency procedures in case of [ERROR] attacks in the future.

That night, everyone has dinner onboard the rockit ship. We searched the city quite thoroughly and there were no evidence of any [ERRPR]s left, but there's no need to risk it.

During dinner...

"What should we do now? head further south and see if the spiders cities were attacked?"-Lyann asks while holding Eldric's hand, sitting next to him at the dinner table
"If that was the case, we would have seen millions of drones instead of a few hundred. I think that they attacked this town first, then moved north." -Mako points out. Uhmm she's at least confident enough now to express her ideas in the company of friends, that's good.

I think I read some talk about Eldric being dense about gender, but changing it so suddendly like that will just confuse people about who is talking to whom.

After finishing the discussion with our friends, we head over to visiting the refugees.

The spider beast folk have their own cabin, while the majin and the human are sharing a different one.

The spiderkin seem calm, despite being on a majin ship, but Portia looks quiet and scared.

"Portia, what is it?"
"Did you find my mommy?"
"No, I am sorry. I looked everywhere I could think of..."

She looks at us with trembling eyes... she's gonna cry, isn't she? it makes perfect sense, I think it's definitively a time where a child is allowed to cry. Mom is gone. That's definitively a high ranking reason to cry

"I'm sorry..." -Eldric is a bit confused on how to pick Portia up for a hug, so he instead kneels next to her and hugs her.
"I want my mommy!" -she starts crying and hiccuping as we hug her

"Thank you for helping us, young lord," -says one of the refugees- "but you shouldn't get so attached to the child."

The other refugee places a hand on his countryman's shoulder and shakes his head from side to side.

The spiderkin look at us, and we explain to them that we believe they have been abducted, and that we are already working on a way to get them back (hopefully). So, killing Portia will not help at all.

Instead, we will take care of her, and introduce her to Okaba's orphanage. We could also ask Mako to have Portia adopted into one of the temples in her homeland, or even send her to the shadows' school. A spider ninja sounds pretty good.

As they hear all this, the refugees cheer up, and assure you that they will pray for your success. No, for your quick success!

Lyann was waiting for us wearing a purposefully short night gown in white, her hair fixed into a long braid behind her. There were candles and perfume involved, but... she's not really upset.

"That is just like you." -she says with a sigh, quickly followed by a smile-

She snuffs out the candles, and lifts the screen off the [Permanent light] lamp so the room is bathed in a more normal light.

"Portia, I'm Lyann. It is nice to meet you." -she says kindly
"n-Nice to meet you."

Lyann makes sure Portia eats something, and then changes her into fresh clothes, albeit they look somewhat big on her. She is really used to being a big sister.

Once Portia is sleeping comfortably (she actually hogged the bed. Spiderkin are quite large, after all), Lyann sits with us on top of some blankets and covers on the floor.

"Don't you think we should keep her?" -she asks
"She's not a pet."
"Uhmm well, you do spoil Zoe and Stella a lot..."
"I do not!"
"You are such a doting olde brother..." -she teases with a smile, and then pacifies Eldric with a little kiss- "...but that's nice about you, too. Shouldnt she stay with us for a few days, at least? I am sure she can spend time with Zoe, Nina, and the other harpies."
"You think that would be better?"
"Yes. She needs to feel comfortable. Once she knows she has friends, we can take her to the orphanage, and she can visit Zoe at home, or the other way around."

Oh, so Asmund is weak against children's tears, uh? the big scary vampire duke, master of the black spure, is bad at dealing with children.

"Oooh, what a cute child! Do you want candy?" -Dawn opens her hands and reveals some candy, as well as a few sparks and colorful mana smokes.

I know you like pranks, but are you actually wasting mana on party tricks, now? this bubblegim pink succubus... come think of it, that is normal candy, right? it's not pepper candy or anything like that?

Well, Portia seems to like it.

"You're pink" -she says softly
"Yup! Aura is blue, too! but I'm Dawn"

After a short while, Zoe and Stella come in, and greet everyone. Then Mako, Honoria, and finally Okaba.

Okaba comes in from the opposite entrance, however. He was probably speaking with the captain, together with Alard.

Portia still seems somewhat nervous around Okaba, but she was probably told scary stories by the grownups. That is how these things go, after all.

Well, we need to get some work done, right?

Thankfully, there is only routine stuff piled up. Since we began coming in semi-regularly to work, it is not as if important matters get piled up anymore.

After a while, Ren comes in to see what we are up to, and Yin bows deep enough for her forehead to touch the ground.

Of course, you have to consider that she was sitting on a pillow on the floor int he first place, so she was already sort of kneeling.

"So, how is work going, duke?" -asks Ren with a smile while she approaches to sit next to us in a completely casual manner.

And that was how we followed Ren into her private quarters.

It is... actually a very simple room. It is mostly empty, but what little is there is obviously of the highest quality. There is a standing paper curtain with a beautifully painted landscape, a low table of red wood that shines under the gentle evening light, and a few tall flowerpots against a wall, with several exotic glower arrangements on them.

There are several sliding doors, so her clothes and things are hidden away, leaving the bed and the desk as the only really standing furniture on the room.

"Duke, did you enjoy my gift?"

"The white mantis steeds I sent you."

Right, she did give us a couple of rather beautiful, gigantic praying mantis, right? Honestly, we haven't found any use for them
