You're left holding your sister's hand, as the storm waters rips her body off her shoulder and drags her screaming away.
You are frozen. Time passes. The storm fades. There is nothing but end around you, one hand petrified on the anchored remains of home, the other dropping the severed arm of family you no longer have.
Your father died first, pushing you out the way of the collapsing roof-top. Your mother second, crushed trying to rescue him out. Your sister's body didn't make it far, it caught between broken fences before the rapids tore her to bits.

You are alone. Everyone is dead. The tavernmaster and his beautiful daughter crushed like your family, the town's guard scattered across the watery paths, the old widower clinging onto his beloved's grave.

You are alone. Everyone is dead.

Except for her.

"My apologies, I meant to kill you but it seems we were both unlucky." The Rain descends from her perch above the cloud, dripping water from black hair and white cloth as she touches down before you. "Do not blame me, the sacrifices today will bring forth new life, such is the way of The Beyond and The Beneath. You are the witness, tell others so that they fear the cull of nature."

And then, she is gone.

Now the storm is over, but your cheeks still run wet. A God have killed your family.

A month has passed. Where there was once a village, there is now a graveyard. The last corpse buried, you drop the shovel, numb. Flowers already grow from the broken roads, there is life here, but none you know.

"Beautiful nothing you have here." The End approaches, you recognize his lack of head from the scriptures. He moves, galloping on four skeleton legs. Half a dead horse, almost half a dead man. "There was supposed to be a famine, but it seems that bitch swept everything up and left only you behind."

His voice whispers into your mind, an old gravelly sound. "It's hard enough for me to collect when The Blood is goading every man to war."

He summons his scythe from the shadows of his cloak, the blade drips black blood and the handle is made of writhing arms. "Well then, choose. Shall I take you now, or will I have to wait for you to starve."

You are beyond fear or anger. Your life ended with The Rain, now The End has come to take the remains... still...

You will not go gently. Without anger, with defiance, you pick up your shovel. You lunge at The End, stabbing at him with the muddied tip. He bats it away simply with a bony hand.

"That was not one of the choices I offered you. What do you think you're doing? I am the second weakest of the eight, but you are still mortal."

Undeterred, you swing back, up and right at the God, tearing into the cloak. The shovel-head shatters on his shoulder, shards of pig iron cutting into your face.

"I should kill you now, but your soul will go to The Blood or The Righteous. Tire yourself out, your tools cannot hurt me."

The End doesn't regard you, among men you are just one of many, not even a soldier or a hero, just a simple farm boy. You beat at him with the splintered stick, your cracked hands bleed with every swing.

"I know your end as it should be. You were to die today, sparing your last meal to your darling sister. She was supposed to die tomorrow, torn apart by starving wolves without anyone to protect her. Foolish, your hands cannot change fate. Give up hope."

You are without hope.

You are with defiance.

You run at The End, dropping your stick. Unaware, overconfident, he does not move to stop you.

He is foolish.

You grab his hands where they hold his scythe, and shove them with the little might you can muster.

"Ah.

The writhing hands grab onto The End's body as it touches him, the blade aligned over his shoulder. You drag, and the scythe cleaves into his being. The bone cuts cleanly without a shard, black mist spilling out from the god.

"That's right, fate has already been rewritten... what a mistake."

The End falls apart. You have slain a god.

You are alone. Everyone is dead. The End's scythe beats in your hand.

"He killed him." "He killed a god." "This isn't supposed to happen." "Now what." A million voices chat among each other, in confusion, in chaos.

"You must become death." A familiar one speaks more clearly to you. "Oh dear, the others will be laughing at me for all eternity... you must be confused. Let me explain. I am certainly dead, and you are now the owner of my scy- hold on. This is going to hurt."

The writhing arms of the god's weapon reach out, grabbing suddenly at your own. You try to remove it, but with no success. The fingers dig into your skin, getting underneath it. The pain comes, burning cold. And then it is gone.

"As I was saying. Good job, the other seven have probably felt the fate change already. You should probably move soon, I'm certain The Righteous will be sending his champion to kill you. I'll answer any questions you have, not much else to do but watch now. There's a village down the road, just start walking."

"You may notice the abyss screaming in your ears. You can hear thoughts now. Do not mistake this for mind-reading, there's a fine line between the two. It'll be some time yet before you come into my power, but so long as you consume... every person you kill by the scythe will add to your power. I wouldn't recommend killing pointlessly though, most souls fade quickly or become claimed by The Eight. I'd seek out the mighty, those unbroken by the world." The End whispers to you, locked away in the scythe.

"Speaking of The Eight, I'm sure you're familiar with them. Gods is what people typically call us, I find it curious, since we make very little and mostly just harvest the dead. At any rate, my dominion is over expiration as you might imagine, so I'm fairly weak from how few people manage to get to old age. The Rain is a bit of a misnomer, as she collects all lives lost to both storms and mountains. The Blood, The Righteous, The Quiet, The Sick, The Lucky and The Beast are the others... all terrible people, other than The Righteous really."

The words come quickly, too much to register at once. You ask The End about fate.

"There is a way the world is meant to go, set in place long before I existed. A beginning, and an end. It's simple really, but you're too mortal to understand it now. Perhaps soon... each of The Eight are meant to guide fate where it's meant to be, but many of the others have had different thoughts. They consume beyond their means, and change it as they wish. Your village was casualty to this."

You arrive at the steps of the next town. You've been here before, long ago. Your father holding one hand, your sister holding the other, and your mother holding hers. The distance is so much shorter now that you are alone. It's a small village much like yours.

You ask The End if any of The Eight have been slain before.

"Not as far as I'm aware. Anyways, hide the scythe before you enter, just command it away." Without a word, the weapon pulls itself into your skin as you approach the village. It's a terrible sort of feeling. "Each of The Eight have a champion, and mine should be around here somewhere, but it seems I can't call out to him in this form. Let's have a look."

On the far side, you see men marching in armour, their grim expression tells you that they march towards death.

"There's no hope." "The Blood's legion is far greater than ours." "Where is The Righteous to protect us?" You hear their thoughts sounding off as you watch them.

"Hey there traveller," A stranger says, approaching you from behind, "You look absolutely miserable." "So there were survivors from the flood?"

The stranger wears a feathered cap, a cloak hangs over his shoulders. His skin and hair are dark, he seems foreign. "I'd be careful around here, just stay a night and move on. The Blood has been sweeping the country side for tribute, and it seems he'll be here soon."

"This is The Righteous' territory, what on earth is he doing." The End whispers.

Can we team up/temporary alliance with any of the others? What about forming our own army?

Does slaying another one of the others give us their power/dominion?
>>
>>42689079
>Can we team up/temporary alliance with any of the others?
End did say all the others but Righteous were dicks, so probably not since Righteous seems AFK.

>What about forming our own army?
It'd be possible but we're the god of dying in bed fighting the god of war. We likely won't get much in the way of an army unless we do some serious rebranding.

>Does slaying another one of the others give us their power/dominion?
Dunno, but I'd love to find out.
>>
>>42689277
Problem with forming our own army is that we'd effectively be feeding more souls to our rivals. We're going to need to apply a more personal touch to our godslaying I think.
>>
>>42689296
I got a plan, blight the everliving fuck out of the land the Bloody's legion is on, as well as the lands around it. Let them starve to death. Tell all the villagers to run like fuck.
>>
You ask the stranger for more information. He raises a brow at you. "Curious? Maybe something more." He thinks.

"Rumour has it that The Blood is out to devour the other gods, prove he's the mightiest among them. Unfortunately for his brother, The Righteous is the weakest of The Eight right now, and I hear his champion is losing the fight east. I recommend you head further north into The Quiet's realm if you want to stay safe, I wager The Blood will move straight into The Beast's forests west when he's done mopping up this hopeless army." The stranger tips his hat to you and begins sauntering northways. "Trying times we live in, plagues and storms and murderous hordes every way you look. Good luck out there." "You'll need it."

Any way you look, the people of this village seem to be preparing for the worst. There're little out but soldiers, and they seem worse for the wear of war.

"Oh my old friend Righteous, how I knew you. Let's leave this wretched place quickly, I have already died once and I hate for the next time to be permanant." The End tells you. "My champion is of little worth to us anyways, no need to wait for him."

We can use the help, especially if the End was so out of the loop to not know about one of the gods going overtly against another.

And I think we just met a Champion.
>>
>>42689277
Well, way I reckon it, we're not exactly death are we? We are, but we've got our own motivations. If we can absorb powers of the others we'll become more than the end, perhaps we will become fate embodied? Or some such

>>Retire to the inn, you to rest and find End's champion.
>>
>>42689368
>>Try to aid the village, there's got to be something you can do.
What we can do, is we can take their militia and own blossoming godling powers, and move east, to aid the Righteous' champion.

To me, fighting by ourselves seems like a hopeless endeavour -- but, if we team with the Righteous (who we are apparently on good terms with), then we pose more of a chance.

Seems like a plan, hell even letting them know Deaths can die if Fate says fuck you is great for morale.
>>
Powerless, you just lost your home, you can't bare to let these people lose theirs without doing something. There has to be something you can do here.

You approach the soldiers, and ask them how to help. The most upright standing among them comes to meet you, he bares the symbol of The Righteous over his heart, a spiraling star. "I don't recognize this one... I can't send another man to his death." "Why're you bothering us beggar, just hide in your hovel and let real men do the work. There's no treasure to be found upon the battlefield." "It's for the best, The Righteous is silent and the champion is lost."

"The Blood and The Righteous are similar yet so different. The Blood collects those that die by other men, but The Righteous collects all who die for a cause. As it so happens, they've more than once stopped to argue over where a soul belongs." The End whispers to you. "This one will certainly go to The Righteous."

"If you really feel the light in your heart... see if you can't scrounge up some food in the forests west. We don't need you losing a sword to the enemy." "We need to depart quickly, the champion may still be alive."

A round-about way to find answers, but it seems you have one. There's certainly something to do. It doesn't look like the man wants you to join him, but there's nothing stopping you from taking the way. Though, perhaps you would do better staying behind.

You decide to stay out of the way for now. You're not so much as mediocre in the sword, and your powers as you understand them are undeveloped.

You take the soldier's advice to head west towards the forest, as a farmer's son you at least know what's edible and what's not...

"We're close to The Beast's territory, be careful." The End tells you, once you've made a ways into the woods. "Among The Eight, The Beast still respects fate... but in the first place, having your skull caved in by a bear is a gruesome domain. I had a head once, before The Beast chewed it off. Though, I had a body once until you killed me."

The woods around you are unfamiliar, you know your path back well enough but as you collect nuts and berries you find the way ahead more and more uninviting. Thorns and branches overlap each other more closely, and the faint sound of flapping birds becomes ever the more fainter.

As you reach to pull some roots out from the dirt, a pulsing pain erupts in the arm in which the scythe folded.

There's a heavy breathing coming from further in the woods. "Don't go." "I'm so curious." "Is it a beast?" "It sounds injured." The voices reach out to you.

"I recommend against this personally."

You move further into the woods, pushing through the biting shrubbery. It cuts at your skin, but your body is numb to the pain. it's been numb since the storm.

"You smell like death."

The scythe bursts from your skin, and you catch an arrow in the shaft of it. Out of the wood and into the clear, you see her, standing on tall branches opposite with a strange bow in her hand. The weapon seems to be growing out of her skin, turning into vines from fresh. "Which one are you?" "I already sent away Thana and Giari. Is he The Blood's champion?" She pulls a strand of brown hair loose, and it straightens into into a point. Setting it on the demented bow, she takes aim at you.

"Must be The Beast's champion. And we're not even in her territory yet... it seems tensions are high, Thana is The Righteous' champion, and I imagine Giari must be oen of the others." The End sighs, "My useless champion hasn't been here yet... while typically I myself refrain from meeting The Eight, I'm curious to see what you'd do with this information. Remember what I said about the souls of the mighty...? Champions are typically chosen from the best. I think you know what I mean by this. You're still in the dark of things, but it seems this one might know something about what's going on. You don't need her to answer your questions, just get her to think about them.

You ask her who she is, what she's doing here, what's going on.

She pauses, pensive. "He can't be a villager, but is he not a champion?" "I am Zaele, Champion of The Beast! You encroach on his territory, turn back and you'll have time yet!" "This one smells strange, do I shoot him in the back?"

"Only mine read thoughts. But careful with his," The End refers to The Beast, "The champion could track a mosquito through in a swarm."

You ask her about the situation, why the champion of The Beast would be in The Righteous' grounds.

"The Righteous is here no longer, this land returns to the wild and The Beast will see that The Blood does not march his forces in." Zaele releases her bowstring, firing an arrow at you. "Does he not know about The Righteous? How will he react to this."

It isn't aimed to hit you, and you are beyond fear, but perhaps...

Word of advice from another QM, if one of your options involves a dice roll, you're better of waiting until it wins the vote, then asking for a roll after the choice is locked.

If people know before the vote closes whether the rolling option is a success or failure, it's going to influence how they vote.

You stand your ground, the arrow flies between your ear and your shoulder, embedding itself into the tree behind you. From it's back it fades, and from it's tip grows vines that crawl over the tree trunk.

"No coward, this one. The Lucky's champion screamed and jumped. Too calm to be Blood's." "Who are you," she asks, leaping off from the tree onto the field center before you, "Are you Thana's ally? I already told her that The Beast will not humour the cause of a dead god."

"The Righteous is dead? Seems I won't be the laughingstock."

"I prefer not to fight if you'll see peace, but we will not join the war. Fate is already unraveled, without The Eight moving to kill each other. Return to your domain, and do ask your master whoever he is to return to his duties instead of making famine." "Is he The End's? The Sick's?"

"That is my duty! And I would rather not be compared to the bitter crone."

For all her talk of peace you can tell that Zaele's guard is still up. She's said some interesting things, but whether they matter to you...

"If you'll not listen to me, perhaps we should introduce you to The Beast. He may humour you a little before he eats you whole." "Will this scare him if an arrow doesn't?"

You request an audience with The Beast.

Zaele is not only wordless, but her mind also seems to be a blank...

The woodlands where The Beast resides appear more treacherous than the calm of The Righteous' territory. The trees grow high enough the coming moonlight barely peeks through the canopy, and the roots large enough to make hurdles in your way. You can hear the sound of animals howling, but they stay clear of your way. You might be blinded, if not for dancing lights guiding your way.

"The Beast allows some souls to tend to the forest, it is not our way to consume more than we need. You can see them can't you, you are a champion." "Right?"

You ask Zaele about The Righteous and unravelled fate as you move.

"The Righteous died some weeks ago. We do not know why this happened. His territory sits center of them all, so the news came quickly to us by the song of birds." Zaele pauses. "Strange still, that his champion still has her powers."

"And here my champion told me there was no news in town when we arrived yesterday. Lazy bastard can't lie to me, he must not have bothered asking."

"The Blood marches, The Rain brings disaster, and The Sick summons plagues. They are taking beyond fate's decree, and now the future is a mess. My master is displeased, but we risk too much by moving to stop them." Zaele bites her lips. "We need to do something, The Blood will move on us any day now."

At the forest's end you find a cliffside that reaches beyond the clouds. Seems everything is bigger here.

Many men tall and many men wide, with the face of a wolf and the wings of a bird, the body of a bear and the tail of a lizard. He lands, shaking the ground beneath you.

"The End. You are... fleshier than I remember." The Beast says, a voice like booming thunder.

"He... thinks you're me? We look nothing alike."

Zaele looks at you wide-eyed, shivering. "This is The End? I came this close to fighting a god?"

"I had thought you at least knew not to come into my territory. You have a new head, do I bite this one off as well?" The Beast's thoughts are a blank to you, it seems the gods do not overcome the gods. "If you do not have something worth saying, then be on your way. We prepare to fight The Blood, there is war looming."

"Do not expect to kill The Beast. You will not be as lucky as you were killing me. Stupid as he is, his instinct is beyond any other... beast's."

You put on your best impression of The End. The realization that you know nothing about the going-ons of gods is discouraging but...

"Well then, End. Seems you've come a long way, without your champion none the less." The Beast seems to be fooled.

You ask The Beast about the situation among The Eight, and the workings of fate.

"Gone senile have you. The others are all unwell with fate, they grasp at the souls they can because the peace we have isn't good enough for them. Glory hounds and slinking snakes, the lot of them." The Beast growls, shaking the tree tops. "And now, The Righteous dies... I felt him and his blink out... only decent one among us. I wonder if The Blood got him."

"And he doesn't notice anything strange with me hm."

"You are... different, End. Much less volatile than I remember. This is a good change."

You offer to aid The Beast in his cause, it seems among The Eight he is at least among the more agreeable. He eyes you carefully, though you cannot discern the feeling behind the wolf eyes.

"I suppose we did always agree on one thing. Fate is not meant to be changed. I see, you met me here so that we could see the others not tear the world apart." The Beast seems to smile, there're stains of blood between his massive maw. "If they continue the way they do, there'll be nothing left for the hunt. Man is finite, though I hate to kill another... The Blood at least, must be stopped."

"The idiot thinks he's clever, I know just where this is leading."

The Beast lifts a hind leg and scratches behind his ear, from his fur falls a golden hair. It flutters, and wraps itself around champion Zaele's wrist.

"Take my champion and yours, head east. There is an arrow that can fell a god. We will see fate kept."

>

Fuck I hope I counted this right I am awful at counting.
>>
"He wants to use you... or me I suppose. May be worth the humour, for how big his head is, I doubt there's much of a brain there. This can't be too clever that I won't figure it out." The End rambles on as The Beast dismisses himself of your presence, taking back into the air.

Zaele stares at you inquisitively. "That's not really The End is it?" What she thinks, she does not say. Instead, "I am in your service, The End."

It doesn't seem too late to avoid getting involved in this mess, but you remember The End's talk about Zaele's hunting prowess. One way or the other, you'll need to leave the forest before you make any plans.

When you return to the village, the soldiers are gone. Presumably having marched eastwards to meet The Blood.

"I hate places like this," Zaele says, "Stone floors and wood walls. The smell is awful, it smells like... people." You seem to be fetching some looks from the scant few townsfolk walking about. Your clothes are a wreck and there's blood on your skin. Your companion is comparatively decent, but hardly elegant with the animal pelts she wears over tanned skin.

But the townfolk do not bother you.

It is the traveler who does.

"Ah, my champion! With the stupid face and the stupid hair." The End sighs.

The man walks right in front of you and stops. His hair is a mess of black and his skin is pale and sunken. "What did you do...?" "What happened?"

He scratches his neck and sighs. Zaele looks back and forth between you two.

"I'm not out of a job am I?" "Probably should have followed old bones back then, but he said he'd only be..."

He reaches out, touching your scythe hand lightly. "Are you...?" "My name is Eloi, who's she?" His thoughts are difficult to follow, they seem to break and end at random.

"I could ask for one as loyal as Zaele here or as capable as that Thana, but Eloi's strength is that he doesn't complain. Granted, he doesn't do much of anything but I've known The Sick's champion and all he does is whine." The End explains to you. "Within my domain, patience is a virtue."

You introduce Eloi to Zaele as your champion, and Zaele to Eloi as The Beast's. She seems unimpressed by him, he seems apathetic to her.

"Ah, I see..." Eloi mumbles. "You must be able to hear me, I haven't said my name... or perhaps you can't hear me and..." His thoughts trail off. "Oh well," he says, "Suppose you're my boss at any rate. No point thinking any harder."

"I wish he'd taken longer to turn coat."

Eloi looks at you but bows to Zaele. "Eloi, Champion of The End. My talents are... cooking and cleaning mostly. I also stab people." "I should have been a baker, or a monk." It seems he's willing to play along at least.

"I wouldn't call him stupid, but it takes some effort getting him to think."

Zaele taps her a finger against her forehead. "You two are a strange pair, but I have my orders. If introductions are done, let's move." "Is this really The End's champion?"

Eloi looks at you and shrugs. "If you need her killed, just say the word. We need a word, the old master never liked them but you seem... oh, maybe mountain lily."

The Righteous is SUPPOSEDLY dead.

And we should be ambivalently glad for that at least, otherwise he would most certainly try to kill us.
>>
"I wouldn't worry too much about the girl talking to The Beast, only I, well, you and your champion can communicate so simply. The others have different methods." The End whispers to you.

You decide to retire for the night. Nothing to do today that you can't do tomorrow. Although you realize you are modestly equipped, Eloi seems to have coin enough in his pouch to room each of the three of you. Zaele retires immediately, leaving you and your new champion to chat.

"I prefer talk to thought when I can, thinking can be hard you know." Eloi tells you, once you're seated in the inn and have some food and drink in front of you. "I once thought about how I could betray The End, but then I realized that he could hear me, so I thought, I wouldn't thought at all... think? It seems to be working, he's dead and I haven't even thought of it."

Despite the smell of roasted whats, you don't feel any hunger after the long day. You push greens and reds left and right on the plate in front of you.

"Personally I'd rather not fight The Blood, from what I hear, he's pretty good at killing people. Which is strange to me, because it means he didn't get his name from bleeding. Maybe it's ironic?" "Would he be The Bled?" Eloi continues to chatter one-sidedly, biting between words. "I guess dying is easier than living though, so I'll follow your orders."

He finishes the meal, downs his drink, and coughs. Wiping his mouth with his sleeve.

He thinks.

"Word is The Righteous' champion is gathering hands to make a world without gods. So The Righteous died or something? Awfully suspicious timing, don't you think? Perhaps we should keep an eye out for her when we're on the battlefield. I don't trust The Beast's champion. Too alert, too smart. Perhaps we should just leave and avoid this mess? Go north. She's already asleep, I know it."

I think you mean, find someone hungry and alone and harvest their soul.

Since we don't need to sleep probably.
>>
You'll stay at the night as planned. No sense trying to escape a tracker and ending up in the middle of nowhere. Worse comes to worst, there'll be a use for Zaele.

"Well, yours are my orders." Eloi shrugs. "I'll see to sleep then, hopefully die with happy dreams." He excuses himself, and goes.

You prod The End to tell you more about your powers, find a way to practice them. "Eager aren't you," he replies, "Not much use forcing it, they were with me since I was and they'll... likely be with you in due time. My domain is subtle, you'll someday be able to rouse the dead and speak with souls unconsumed. For now, I'll teach you the scythe."

You return to your room, to practice in privacy.

The End walks you through things. The scythe comes and goes on your command, even if thrown or lost you can bring it back at a will. The shaft has a body, but the blade passes through matter and collects the soul. Your work with it isn't artful, but your experience culling fields and collecting crop isn't all wasted here.

"I dislike using it myself, but souls harvested with the scythe will always return to your domain. I cannot promise all my power will come to you on its own, but I am certain you will grow as you wield the weapon. Unfortunate perhaps that you did not slay a god with more estate to their name, for it's long in the making yet if you wish to grow through your domain naturally," The End tells, "So few people pass as they should that my power before I was lost was hardly any. Though, now that oblivion has found me, I can't say I care much about the fate of the world. Collect as you wish, I may as well see where this leads. Idol curiosity."

Having practiced enough, you recall the scythe and climb into bed. But it seems harder to sleep now than when you had nightmares.

We should stalk the streets and listen to mortals' secrets if we no longer require sleeping.

You equip yourself in more favourable travelling gear, and wash your hands of dry blood and grave dirt. In the morning you depart quietly. Eloi speaks freely about everything and nothing unimportant, but Zaele does not entertain you two.

Some hours pass on the road to the east, until The Beast's champion speaks.

"Thana is near here, I smell her," Zaele says, "And an awful scent with it, blood and fire. There is something north... not a battle."

"The Blood is still further east isn't he? Let's continue on, I don't want to complicate things." Eloi says. "That's The Righteous' champion isn't it? I'm fine with my gods the way they are... though, I guess we're on our way to kill one aren't we."

You are not quite in The Blood's domain yet, but you can see where the grass turns to ruin, where the earth blights and the trees die.

Zaele sighs. "We do have a mission but..." "I hope Thana is safe."

Thana wants to kill the Beast as much as anyone.

And more importantly, us.

But it seems we can't trust Z to kill Thana no matter how necessary it is.

Except we're blatantly not. Besdies any idiot can see the Blood, Rain and Sickness are far larger and more powerful threats. She'd be an idiot to try and backstab us before they were removed. If she tries to kill us, we get a soul to reap. It's a win-win.

You start north, a world without gods is a tempting idea, but more importantly right now, if The Righteous' champion seeks to unmake The Blood then you're likely on the same side of things for now.

You see the rise of smoke over a town, not much larger than your own or the one you left but surrounded in walls half-built and fortifications half-done.

"Horrible, has The Blood already captured these people?" Zaele asks aloud, her thoughts full of worries.

"There's no carnage at the gates and the battlements are incomplete, not torn apart. Either The Blood hasn't arrived yet," Eloi responds, "Or The Blood is an ironic name and he's actually quite clean." You might think he's joking but his thoughts match his words.

No one stops you from approaching or entering, as Eloi pointed out, the way inside is untouched by battle.

There on the inside, the crowds are gather together around a great pyre built in the square.

"She burns but doesn't die!" "Bring back The Righteous!" "The godslayer has doomed us all!" "Choke her in the flames!"

"Ah, seems we've found our champion." Eloi chuckles to himself. "Hot stuff isn't she?"

"I am sorry for my champion."

"Thana!" Zaele screams out, thoughts a mess. Her hand pulls to the side, and her skin starts to part where vines start to push.

Steel through hands and feet nail the woman to the side The Righteous' effigy. The fire built around it licks her skin, but where her flesh melts it pulls itself back again just as quickly.

"Is that what The Righteous does? She doesn't die? Whew, glad I'm with The End, that looks painful." Eloi winces at the sight.

Sounds like the only way for them to die is by our scythe, to end their suffering.
>>
>>42695522
>>Stop Zaele and convince her to wait.

Short of that, start harvesting townspeople's souls.
>>
You gesture Zaele down, and move between the townsfolk. You ask them what they're doing, and somehow, they answer.

"The Righteous is dead! She's said as much herself, and still his champion has his blessing. She robbed him and she killed him!" One man screams out. "Our only hope betrayed! Return The Righteous to us!"

"They are fearful," The End whispers, "Though they might not think it, I know fear well enough to see it behind anger and deception."

None stop you from approaching the flames where the champion holds. She lifts her head to look at you, it's an ugly thing with her hair turned to ash and her skin being roasted. But her eyes keep their light, she is with hope.

"We should present her to The Blood, then he'll leave us be! It's her fault The Righteous isn't here to save us!"

The ground roars when Zaele stomps her foot to interrupt the people. "Ridiculous! The Blood is out to harvest you, no tribute will stop his warpath!" They cower away from her, The End was right.

They seem close enough to pacified, but...

"I've seen a lot of fears before, the fear that paralyzes a man when anything else might save him, and the fear that turns a coward into a killer." The End sighs. "Well, do as you like. So long as you don't die to an Eight or their champion, I'm probably fine."

You manifest your scythe, and rip the stakes out from the champion's flesh. She falls forward, where Zaele dashes and catches her.

"Mad man." "Is he an Eight? I don't recognize him." "What do we do?"

Zaele bites her lips, and leads out of town first. Eloi waves goodbye to the people as you follow on behind the two champions.

"Thank you," Zaele whispers as you pass through the gates, "I'm sure it wasn't their time yet, but I almost lost my calm."

Back in the open, away from the village. Zaele sets down The Righteous' champion. Her skin has cooled to a pale colour and her hair grown to an even parted shoulder's length. The holes in her her hands and feet are flesh and skin again.

The champion coughs twice, spitting black on the grass. Zaele helps to right her.

"Easy Thana."

Thana, evidently, glares at you. "You are not The End, who are you." "You are not The End, who are you." She whips her arm to the side, and where the hole would've been in her hand, a long sword slides out.

"Scary," Eloi comments, "I'm The End's champion, and he is my master, so he is certainly The End."

"I've met The End, appearance aside, The End would not stop to help anybody on his way." "I've met The End, appearance aside, The End would not stop to help anybody on his way."

Zaele looks back and forth between you and Thana, unsure of what to do.

"I am Thana, Champion of The Righteous, Defender of Humanity. Who are you, monster?" "I am Thana, Champion of The Righteous, Defender of Humanity. Who are you, monster?"

>Speak the truth, lying will do you no good here.

Bluntly, you ask her about the matter with The Righteous. The words cut into her, the grip on her blade weakens and she bites down on her lips.

"I did not kill The Righteous!" "I did not kill The Righteous!" She lowers her blade, and spits more ash on the ground. "I'm wasting my time here. I will march to claim The Blood, and then I will figure out what your story is. Mark this champions and abomination, by the decree of The Righteous who died for our world, I will see to that The Eight go with him. Stand beside me, or go to The Beyond." She turns and leaves, blade still in hand and mind alert.

"I remember her being sweeter, but if nothing else she's honest." The End sighs.

"She's naked," Eloi quips.

Zaele watches Thana vanish from sight, then turns back to you. "Let's continue our mission. This was... a distraction." "We should meet The Blood before she does, she can't face alone even with an army."

The moment passed, you continue back on your way, taking a different road from the would-be Godslayer.

>END

Sorry, going to wrap up here for the night. I RAN OUT OF ENERGY A LONG TIME AGO AND IT IS DIFFICULT IMPROVISING FOR SO LONG.

A few questions were asked through this thread that I'll answer. The intention was that you'd be The End's champion and explore the world in a much, much more structured way. Eloi I had to composite throughout the thread because he wasn't... a character at all.

In regards to a map and system, I'll tell you right now that I am fairly unprepared. This is largely an experiment with quest mechanics like mind-reading, so I didn't do much more than minimally necessary preparation outside of how I'd handle the mechanics I've prepared.

Anything else?
>>
>>42696659

My intention was only to run for about 5 sessions so I thought a Twitter would be unnecessary. I'm aiming to run next Wednesday ideally but it's probably smarter to get a Twitter ready.

>>42696793
The world is much less prepared than you might think and I have no idea how the map looks. So yes, you are now correct.

>>42696809
This ran much better than I anticipated. My biggest concerns were the mind-reading mechanic not playing out and people attaching to a waifu and turning it into that sort of quest. Didn't seem to have any of those be problems.

I'm not sorry about rolling that 100.
